New family-owned Christian bookstore lands in North Bend BY BREE LAUGHLIN The World

Ezekiel’s, a new Christian bookstore and bakery in downtown North Bend, is a longtime goal come to fruition for Glenda Lanza and her family. “I’ve always wanted to have a Christian bookstore and bakery, and it’s finally now coming to life,” Glenda said. The small business is a true

family endeavor. Ezekiel’s is owned by Glenda and her husband Mike Lanza, as well as her son and daughter-in-law Mikey and Kaitlyn Turner. Glenda said the store name, Ezekiel’s, is named-after not only the prophet in the Bible – but also a new addition to the family – her grandchild Ezekiel. The Christian bookstore offers bibles, commentaries and books,

Cranberry Sweets offers locally-made holiday treats BY BREE LAUGHLIN The World

Customers inside Cranberry Sweets were treated to an assortment of sweet and decadent samples for their Holiday Open House on Saturday, Dec. 2. The staff at the locally-owned candy shops were in full holiday-mode for the event. They say it is one of the

biggest days of the year. Santa even dropped by for the occasion. “We do it to get the holiday kick-started and to give back to the

community,” said Cranberry Sweets general manager Jackie Schaiff. During the holiday event, Cranberry Sweets offers giveaways, trivia, loads of samples, as well as coffee and cider. “It’s always lots of fun. Everyone who works here always looks forward to the event and seeing all of our customers,” Schaiff said. Cranberry Sweets has developed about 250 unique fruit candies and chocolates over the half-decade they have been in business. They added a small in-factory bakery to increase their cookie selections and, in 2015, given the growing popularity of their caramels and caramel corn, they officially became a popcorn Cranberry Sweets continued on page 5

Located five miles south of Charleston at the south end of the Coos Bay Estuary, the South Slough National Estuarine Reserve is one of 29 areas in the National Estuarine Research Reserve System. This reserve is managed by the Oregon Department of State Lands and is protected for long-term research, water-quality monitoring, education, and coastal stewardship. The NOAA Office for Coastal Management provides funding, national guidance, and technical assistance. Education Staff at the Reserve offer naturalist-led outdoor education both at the South Slough and throughout the community. Southwestern Oregon Community College is offering free GED® and Adult Basic Education classes winter term 2024. These classes prepare individuals to take the GED® exam and update skills to enroll in college or career training programs. owners said they are happy to be bringing a Christian bookstore to North Bend. “We really want to bring a light into the community,” Glenda said. She said a few local businesses have small Christian book sections, but it’s been about 15-years since there has been a dedicated Christian bookstore in the area.

“I know a lot of people have been wanting a Christian bookstore to find bibles and commentaries and other books, and we are excited to bring that back into the community,” she said. Ezekiel's is located at 1966 Sherman Ave. They are open Tuesday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays.

William “Bill” Dean Delimont February 4, 1953 - October 21, 2023

William “Bill” Dean Delimont was born in Omaha, Nebraska on February 4, 1953, to Kenneth and Barbara Delimont. He was the older brother to Kenneth Jr. Delimont. Bill’s childhood was spent moving following his father’s military service to Pennsylvania, England, Alaska, New Mexico, California, and Hawaii. Alongside his brother; uncle, Norm; and cousin, Gunter, Bill learned to love snow skiing, backpacking, fly-fishing and surfing around the country. Bill was the quintessential family man. He loved spending time with his family and considered this to be sacred and deeply meaningful. His father was an avid craftsman and woodworking lover who taught Bill furniture making and carpentry

that he then passed to his son Marshall. Bill was also an exceptional athlete who ran track and played basketball and football during high school and college respectively. He later regularly watched his daughter Nicole’s similar athleticism throughout her life. Bill passed his love of the outdoors to both of his kids, and they regularly spent time on long road-trips and seeing new places. Holidays were treated ceremoniously; trips to Southern California to spend Thanksgivings and Christmas’s with his parents were commonplace, as were putting out his childhood train set, baking and eating his favorite cowboy cookies, and making luminarias on Christmas Eve. Perhaps what defined Bill’s life most outside

of family was his career. He was deeply proud of being a forester and had a bright mind valued by his colleagues. He began his passion at Humboldt State University; following his graduation, he worked in the California Redwoods. He had a unique and prolific career which included conducting timber valuations for the Old Growth Redwood Reserves when the National and State Parks were purchasing them from timber companies. Later, he spent time in the Southeast US managing pine plantations, in Hawaii managing eucalyptus plantations, and all along the West Coast doing everything from timber cruising to tree farm management. He had an entrepreneurial and extremely creative mindset and was an

innovator in everything he did. Early in his career, he worked near Portland Oregon where he met his wife, Jan. They married and moved to the South following his career at Champion International. They lived in Tennessee and Alabama for ten years, where they had their children. In 1994, the family moved to North Bend, Oregon to the same beloved home Jan lives in today. Bill, alongside Jan, was an active member in the community serving as President of the Board of Directors and Special Advisory Director to the Coos Art Museum, as well as on the Finance Committee for the Port of Coos Bay. Before his death, Bill suffered from dementia for nearly fifteen years,

turning his and his family’s life upside down. Throughout the highs and lows he had incredible support from the community. His family will be forever grateful for the care and outpouring of support he received. He loved the long walks, drives up and down the coast, meals with friends, art classes and more than anything, meaningful time with those who spent it with him. Bill passed while in Memory Care in Springfield, Oregon on October 21, 2023 at the age of 70. He is survived by his wife, Jan Delimont; daughter, Nicole Delimont and her husband, Matt Pachta; son, Marshall Delimont and his wife, Inga Dugojevic; brother, Ken Delimont; and uncle, Norman Smith. There is nothing that

will ever fill the spot in his family that he left; their memory of him will forever be cherished. Sandy, Oregon. They have one son, Jason, born in 1972. Beverly graduated from PSU with a degree in History and Feminine Studies. After graduation, Beverly began her first career choice in “banking”. In 1976, her small family of three moved to Las Vegas, Nevada to allow Gary to finish college. While living in Las Vegas, Beverly developed skills in Bank Management to become both an operation officer and training officer with Nevada National Bank. At that time, she also petitioned to go back to her maiden name. She was now Beverly Joann Rice, again and forevermore. In 1979, the family moved to Coos Bay, Oregon. Beverly was immediately offered jobs from the three banking head offices located here. She chose Western Bank. In 1981, Beverly

and Gary purchased a closed and broken-down restaurant building. After menu recipe building and massive remodel, the couple opened The Pancake Mill Restaurant. Acting as President of the company, Beverly guided the restaurant company forward. All this while she stayed working in the bank until 1985. She worked nights and weekends at the restaurant. In 1985, she began working full time at The Pancake Mill. During the 1990s, she began her education and professional career in Genealogy. She served as a teacher at several national conferences. She was an officer with national genealogy organizations and for many years, she volunteered as a teacher at the LDS Genealogy Library in Coos Bay. During the next two decades, Beverly volunteered where

needed, taught whenever possible and continued to keep her restaurant fresh and alive. All this time from 1981 to 2023, Beverly continued to do her share in Pancake Mill Restaurant operation. In 2015, Beverly joined the board of directors at The Liberty Theatre. She served as its Treasurer until her death. Beverly received admiration and respect from those who worked with her. She contributed to the best interest of all concerned. She will be missed. In 2022, after 41 years, Beverly and Gary retired from management of The Pancake Mill operations. 2023 proved to be a good year for travel. They spent time on a California road trip and in their favorite Mexican resort. They had made many plans for 2024. On November 22,

2023, with Beverly’s passing, all plans came to a screeching halt. Every minute of every hour of every day, Beverly will be missed. We love her and her strong spirit. We will reach out, call her name, and ask her council. With luck we will hear her answer. Bless you Beverly Joann Rice. Beverly’s dad was a WW2 veteran and died from serviceconnected disabilities in 1959. She was 8 years old. She missed her father throughout her entire life. She is with them now. A Word, Please: Common mistakes

Every year in this column, I give tips for how to avoid the most common writing mistakes in holiday greetings and invitations. And every year, I’m reminded of just how influential I'm not as people far and wide repeat the mistakes: Merry Christmas from the Smith’s! Happy Holidays from the Wilson’s. We look forward to seeing you this year at Joe Gomez’ house. And on and on. So here’s my 2023 edition of how to make names plural, possessive and plural possessive in your holiday greetings. 1. Don’t use an apostrophe to form the plural of a family name. Clay and DeeDee Smith are the Smiths, not the Smith’s. 2. Don’t use an apostrophe to form the plural of a family name even if it ends in a vowel. Just because the plural name Mancinis looks like the last syllable should be pronounced “iss,” that’s no excuse for using an apostrophe. Ignore your ear and follow the rule: Add just an S to make plurals of last names ending in vowels. One Mancini, two Mancinis. One Popescu, a whole family of Popescus. One Cho, all the Chos. 3. Use and ES and no apostrophe to form the plural of a family name that ends in S, Ch, Sh, X or Z. “We’re visiting the Walshes this Christmas” is correct. Not “the Walsh’s.” “We’re traveling with the Williamses” is correct. Not “the Williams’s” or “the Williams’.” For these, it’s especially important to remember whether you want to make the name plural, possessive or both, because these names in possessive form get tricky. But to simply make plural a name ending in S or another of these letters, just add the ES: We love spending time with the Basses, the Gomezes and the Maddoxes. 4. Don’t change the spelling of a name that ends in Y. Berrys aren’t berries. They’re people whose last name is made plural the same way most names are: with just an S. The Quincys. The Murphys. The Zelenskys.

5. Don’t insert an apostrophe in front of an S that’s part of the name. If you’re writing a card to people with the last name of Williams, don’t talk about them as “the William’s.” Two people named James are never “the Jame’s.” 6. Form possessives of singular and plural names the same way you form possessives of singular and plural generic nouns. You already know to add an apostrophe plus an S to make most singular nouns possessive: the cat’s tail. You also know that if the noun is plural, you usually make it possessive with just an apostrophe placed after the plural S: the cats’ tails. Keep that in mind when writing possessives of proper names on holiday greetings. The house owned by the Smiths is the Smiths’ house. The party thrown by the Mangiones is the Mangiones’ party. Of course, if just one person named Mangione is throwing the party, it’s Bob Mangione’s party. But it's those plural possessives that you have to watch out for. 7. Don’t make exceptions for names ending in X or Z. Outdated style books used to say that names ending in X or Z had their own set of rules for forming possessives. Not so. For singular possessives ending in X or Z, add apostrophe plus S: Donna Cox’s party. Paul Martinez’s house. For plural possessives ending in X or Z, first make plural by adding ES, then add the apostrophe on the end as you do for all plural possessives. The Coxes’ party. The Martinezes’ house. 8. Pick your style for forming possessives of singular proper names ending in S. Some rule-makers say that singular proper names that end in S form the possessive just like every other word: by adding an apostrophe and S: Mr. Jones’s hat. Others say to add just an apostrophe: Mr. Jones’ hat. Either way is fine. Outrage in Wyoming erupts over public land auction By Savannah Rose There’s a 640-acre parcel of magnificent, state-owned public land in Wyoming that’s set for auction unless the state changes its mind. Simply put, this small inholding, known as the “Kelly Parcel,” should never be privatized— never. It is one of the most awe-inspiring and important pieces of open space remaining in America. Within Grand Teton National Park, its borders include the National Elk Refuge and Bridger-Teton National Forest. Its value was appraised in 2022 at $62.4 million. However, the director of the Office of State Lands and Investment just recommended a starting bid of $80 million. But its real value isn’t about money: The land is a vital migration corridor for elk, moose, big horn sheep antelope, pronghorn and mule deer travelling into and out of the national park. It also hosts 87 other “Species of Greatest Conservation Need.” And the annual, 200-mile-long migration corridor known as the Path of the Pronghorn— from Grand Teton National Park to the upper Green River Basin—passes right through the Kelly Parcel at the crux of what’s recognized as the longest mammalian migration in the contiguous United States. Wyomingites have been resolute in their opposition to selling the state-owned parcel. Publicity generated by the Jackson Hole Conservation Alliance collected more than 2,600 comments from people opposed to an auction, and hundreds of opponents turned out at each of four public hearings in November. Many others contacted the state directly for a total of more than 10,000 people opposed to a state auction. Yet this week the Wyoming State Board of Land Commissioners will decide whether a

Savannah Rose private owner gets to do whatever they want with the Kelly Parcel once they bid highest at auction— fence it, subdivide it, certainly road it. With its iconic views of the Tetons and natural beauty that’s surrounded by public land—plus sporting one of the most coveted zip codes in the country— the Kelly Parcel will most likely be snatched up at auction by a billionaire with development and dollar signs in their eyes. “The people of Wyoming would not want to be part of a legacy where this land fell into a private developer’s hands and see that beautiful landscape dotted with a few select starter castles,” said John Turner, former director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, at one of the hearings. There is no rush to dispose of the Kelly Parcel, no deadline to cash in before the bank forecloses or a buyer backs out. But an auction changes everything, in a way that can never be undone. That is why Dave Sollitt, executive director of the Jackson Hole Conservation Alliance is asking The State Board of Land Commissioners to put a stop to this auction and focus on working with state legislators to find a way to sell the Kelly Parcel to Grand Teton National Park, where it belongs. “National parks are heralded as ‘America’s best idea,’ and auctioning off public land within Grand Teton National Park would

stand out as Wyoming’s worst idea,” Sollitt said. “If they go to auction, the state and everyone loses control. That’s how auctions work.” Though money generated from auctioning the Kelly Parcel to the highest bidder would contribute some $4 million annually to the support of public schools, the windfall to the state would also come at an immeasurable cost to wildlife. There is a better approach. Selling the parcel to the National Park Service—as Wyoming did with its other three parcels within the park—is projected to generate up to $120 million over 30 years. The National Park Service tried to buy the Kelly Parcel in 2015, but the agency lacked enough money to make the deal then and now. Establishing ourselves as the first state to auction off public land within a national park is likely to blight Wyoming’s reputation beyond recovery. It should be clear: Privatizing an irreplaceable area within a national park for shortterm gain is a foolish and destructive move. There is so much history surrounding Moore Mill & Lumber Co., and this week I share another story, dating back to 1928, which appeared in the Western World. "The Moore Mill & Lumber company (first photo) resumed operations Monday after a holiday shutdown of several weeks during which time some important improvements were made, bringing the local plant up to a point of efficiency second to none in the state. "Manager R.T. Moore states that a new 12-inch edger and a new-style trimmer were installed during the shutdown, which added to the new resaw department installed last July, making the plant completely modern. It will mean a considerable increase in the daily cut when the mill operates in fir. "The company is now moving its camp from Leneve to the Lowe creek tract, opposite Bear creek, which brings the logging operations within a few minutes ride of Bandon. The camp, under the supervision of J.R. Hellman, will employ about 85 men. A landing and railroad are being built. "Mr. Hellman employed a novel way of moving the camp buildings. They were taken to the river at Leneve by train and placed on a large raft of spruce logs. The raft is made up of 125,000 feet of timber and is large enough to accommodate the whole colony, including bunk houses, cook house, etc. The colony floated down the river to the new scene of operation where it is securely anchored and where the colony will live aboard the raft until the buildings can be moved to their more permanent moorings on terra firma. and go back and forth to their work each day. A crossing has been established at the Hamblock barn just east of the Bear Creek road on the main highway between Bandon and Coquille. Crossing is by boat." In my collection of old postcards I found a picture of the Sugarloaf Creamery at Myrtle Point (second photo) and later I found a small article in the Feb. 4, 1926, Western World. "Sugarloaf creamery at Myrtle Point is operating all through the winter months this year for the first time in history. The American says winter dairying is made possible thru good roads. One reason for the closing of the condensery in Bandon was the lack of winter production of milk. It seems strange that more dairymen do not take advantage of the high prices of milk products during the winter season." A year earlier, in Oct. 1, 1925, the paper reported that the local Nestle's Food plant would close for an indefinite period on Nov. 1 as the milk supply during the winter months was so small that the plant operates at a loss. "The condensery has been an important factor in the community since its establishment here in 1919. It has a capacity of caring for 250,000 pounds of milk per day, and at present is affording employment for 30 people. Farmers who are sending milk to the condensery will be forced to find a market elsewhere for their product. With the closing of the local plant, the warehouse at Coquille will also be closed." The condensery never re-opened, but the complex on the waterfront, which later became Moore Moore's truck shop, was used for other business ventures. The Silver Spray Gardens (third photo) was said to be the largest dance hall in

Oregon during its heyday, in the roaring twenties. In October of 1925, an article in the paper said the dance hall had been closed under attachments for debt, but that week it was released by Coos County Sheriff Gage. "The weekly dance will be given at the Silver Spray Gardens on Saturday, Oct. 3, the management states, as deputy sheriff Malehorn was here Tuesday and granted a release of the order by which it was closed on Saturday of last week. It seems that it was closed through a lack of information regarding the status of the property, which is classed as real property, and cannot be closed except by obtaining a judgment and sale through the court. "A number of other attachments have been filed against the Beach Investment Co. since the city has filed suit. A claim has been entered by the Moore Mill & Lumber company asking for the payment of $4,000 due them on a bill of July 13, 1924. "McNair Hardware company sold to the Beach Investment company hardware and building materials amounting to $2,463.00 and also filed a complaint against the company." Both Moore Mill and the City also filed an affidavit attaching property owned by Beach Investment Co. An article in the Nov. 26, 1925, paper said the hall was sold by the sheriff for liens held by Moore Mill, the City and First National Bank, totaling $11,200. "It will probably be some time before the financial matters are straightened out so the hall can be reopened," said the article. In January of 1926 well-known attorney Geo. Topping secured a lease on the Silver Spray Gardens, "having the interest of the Bandon Concert band, as well as his own." The hall, which was

located on the bluff at Coquille Point, was destroyed in the Fire of 1936. --------------------------I've had a lot of questions lately about the former Dave's TV (or to us old-timers the Croxall & Perry Grocery) building on Second Street between the Continuum building and the former Lloyd's Cafe. The building is owned by Tom Stadelman, who has been upgrading it and has already done a lot of work, including new windows facing Second Street. But it's not ﬁnished. He told me that several people have been talking with the city planning department about a retail shop and a cafe, and if it turns out they are interested he says the building should be completed by the end of March. He added that this month (December) he plans to ﬁnish the front of the building, as he has purchased some poles similar to the building next door (the Continuum). --------------------------I saw a post on Facebook that on the night of Nov. 30, someone had broken

"The spot has been a resource for many local musicians, and the two Telecasters (guitars) have been on dozens of records. They are one of a kind and I would sure like to have them back," said Giardinelli, who is a member of the family who owns Angelo's Italian restaurant in Old Town. --------------------------After reading about the burglary of her home during Gayle Thompson's memorial service recently, Bill Smith said that his home had been broken into in September, and he's not sure but the person may have been in the house when he entered from the front. The Planning Commission recently approved it on a 4-2 (Bill Frey and Gordon Norman) vote. Since then, it has been appealed to the city council by Bandon resident Bruce Spencer (son of Trish and Harry Spencer) and the environmental group, ORCA (Oregon Coast Alliance), headed by Cameron La Follette. At the Dec. 4 council meeting, the council is expected to determine if the appeal hearing will be de Nova (new) or on the record. The hearing is expected to be held in either January or February. --------------------------Since people saw the trolley at the Tree Lighting Ceremony there is talk about putting it back into service this spring. Councilor Peter Braun has been trying to get it retrofit to meet ADA standards, but earlier correspondence with our late city attorney indicates that if it were a tourist attraction, rather than public transportation on a fixed route, it could legally operate. City Manager Torrey Contreras is hoping it can be retrofit or there is the possibility that another one could be purchased, but until that occurs we are hoping that it will once again be thrilling locals and tourists alike when good weather returns. --------------------------It was neat to learn that the combined Bandon/Pacific football team had the top GPA As I See It continued on page 12

Isenhart honored at Southern Coos Hospital & Health Center Jennifer Isenhart, RN, a nurse in the Med-Surg Department at Southern Coos Hospital & Health Center in Bandon was recently honored with The DAISY Award For Extraordinary Nurses. The award is part of the DAISY Foundation’s programs to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day. “Jennifer is recognized for her professionalism, compassion, superior clinical skills and outstanding ability to provide an affirming and reassuring connection with a patient during an inpatient hospitalization,” said SCHHC Chief Nursing Officer Cori Valet. “Jennifer clearly demonstrated the exceptional nursing skills that inspired the creation of the DAISY Award,” Valet said. The nomination submitted by the patient read, “Right from the start, Jennifer treated me like I was her only patient. She made me feel like a friend and she cared and wanted me to get well. I was very dehydrated so needed extra help. Jennifer always smiled and joked with me to keep me positive. I never felt like I wasn’t important. I have no family here, just a very good friend. Jennifer kept me informed as to what was happening with me and always made me feel like I was her friend.” The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease. It gives me encouragement to keep trying. The Chamber Minute: Finding success I rolled into the Coos Bay area in August 1972 in my new Pinto. I had been hired as a technical forester for the Weyerhaeuser operations. At that time, the company had over 1,500 employees in its two mills, two logging terminals and support staff. Jobs abounded in the area, from many sources. Both individuals and businesses shared the confidence that

they could meet any community challenge or need. The recession of the early 80’s was inflation based and almost totally killed off new housing starts, with a predictable effect on the area’s timber industry. Many jobs, good jobs, disappeared as did those in service suppliers to the industry. That produced a change in attitude by many seeing themselves

victimized by forces out of their control. For the last 35 years, we have worked diligently to become an “overnight” success. During that time, while the focus was on big opportunities, there have been a wealth of small and medium sized successes. So, let’s look at those area successes. Leading the parade are the many young entrepreneurs

with new businesses like Seven Devils Brewery, Painted Zebra Boutique and Time Bomb Exchange, to mention a few. Add to this world class health care, Native American enterprises and a college in tune with the times. Our greatest resource is our people. Their spirit is continuing to rebound from being a helpless victim to the confidence that we can chart our own future of

economic success again. Together we do create opportunity! Your Chamber has a spot where you, and only you, have the ability to make things happen. Coos Bay Shakespeare in the Park Announces Their First Winter Production Free Performances of The Most Wonderful Time of Shakespeare: A Holiday Concert slated for December 15th, 16th, and 17th Coos Bay, OR — In its 9th year of presenting free Shakespeare plays, Coos Bay Shakespeare in the Park will present its first ever fundraising event, a holiday concert, for one weekend in December – December 15th, 16th, and 17th – beginning at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday. The event will take place at Southwestern Oregon Community College’s Hales Center for the Performing Arts, 1988 Newmark Avenue, Coos Bay, OR. This year’s holiday concert, “The Most wonderful Time

of Shakespeare,” will feature nine talented local singers who will be performing an array of solos, duets, and group numbers. The concert will also include audience sing-alongs and all-around family fun! There is no charge but donations will be gratefully accepted to help cover costs of scenery, and costumes for the upcoming production of Julius Caesar in June 2024. The actors, director, and all those who are involved in the productions are volunteers and receive no compensation. The actors come from the

community, people from all different walks of life, including experienced actors and those new to the craft. They represent a wide range of ages and come from several of the local Coos Bay/ North Bend theater groups. “Part of our mission statement is to be able to give opportunities for those interested in Shakespeare and to make inclusive theater available for our community, especially those who couldn’t otherwise afford to attend the theater,” said Kristin Hovenkotter Greco, president of the volunteer

board of directors. “Our original thought was: this is something other communities have, our communities deserve it too. And we wanted to provide a place for people from the different theater groups to come together and do outdoor performing arts for our community, to collaborate on free cultural opportunities.” In addition to bringing members of the various local theater groups together in this effort, the group has developed a partnership with Southwestern Oregon Community College, which

sponsors the group by providing indoor rehearsal space, community education classes about Shakespeare, a theater production class, and SWOCC staff and students are involved in the plays. Rector promoted to lieutenant with North Bend fire The city of North Bend recently honored Luke Rector on his promotion to lieutenant with the North Bend Fire Department. Luke's journey began 20 years ago as a resident volunteer while pursuing his fire science degree in college. Over the years, he's devoted himself to the NBFD, evolving from a full-time firefighter to the distinguished position of lieutenant. Luke's commitment to education and experience has been unwavering throughout his 18-year journey at NBFD, preparing him for this pivotal role.
