Weekender Art Cellar joins North Bend business community BY BREE LAUGHLIN The World
North Bend’s arts community is continuing to expand with a new downtown business. The Art Cellar is a retail shop, gallery and community space designed to showcase handmade visual and textile art. Owners Blaise Barshaw and Laurie Ann Greenberg said they originally connected over their shared art background. Now, they are excited to share their artistic endeavors with the community. “We wanted to have a
place where people could gather and they could experience art and have an interactive retail experience,” Greenberg said. The eclectic artists are eager to share their passions with the community. Greenberg has been a knitter and fiber lover since the age of seven. She has worked as a weaver, macrame artist and most recently started to crochet. When she doesn’t have a pair of knitting needles or crochet hook in her hand she’s making jewelry out of polymer clay. Barshaw has worked in paper arts, 2-D animation,
silkscreening, illustration, sculpture and costume construction. His ideas start with a single sketch. He describes his style as unique with a bit of a rebellious edge. The idea for the Art Cellar began when the couple started selling their work at the downtown Coos Bay farmer’s market. “We moved to the area a year and a half ago, and we were looking for something to do. This is the smallest town either one of us have lived in so we wanted to break out,” Barshaw said. “We ended up meeting
so many people and it was so much fun,” Greenberg said. The artists said they got so much support that they decided to open their own shop. They found a location, created a logo and put together a website – and are now ready to join North Bend's downtown Main Street Art Cellar continued on page 5

Girl Scouts Tree of Joy spreads holiday spirit for 40 years BY BREE LAUGHLIN

Local Girl Scouts are keeping a 40-year tradition alive through the Tree of Joy at the Pony Village Mall. Girl Scouts of Oregon troop leaders said the Tree of Joy reflects the true nature of the Christmas spirit by
spreading generosity to those in need during the holidays. Community members throughout the North Bend and Coos Bay areas can help brighten the holiday season for those less fortunate – including children, families, at-risk youth, homeless people and senior citizens – by participating in the Tree of Joy gift giving program. “It is community taking care of community,” said Sara Miller, a local Girl Scout troop leader and Tree of Joy organizer. “It’s also really fabulous to watch the girls get so excited about it,” said Debbie Cox, a fellow Tree of Joy organizer. The girl scouts have decorated the tree inside the Pony Village Mall from
top to bottom with brightly colored paper ornaments. Written on those ornaments are gift ideas for those who need it most. Those who want to participate can select an ornament from the Tree of Joy, purchase the gift requested on the ornament, and return wrapped gifts or gift bagged (along with the original ornament) by Dec. 20. All names have been changed to protect individual identities and

The goal was to create a unique, opportunity for connection, conversation, and a shared appreciation of the sister cities. The two mayors have agreed to make the event monthly to allow more people to visit with the leaders of Coos Bay and North Bend. The next “Walk with the Mayors” will start at North Bend City Hall at noon on Monday, December 18.

This price covers the entire course of eight sessions. All proceeds support the Coos History Museum’s Annual Fund. Pre-registration is required as space is limited for this popular program. Lela Rose Bassett
January 18, 1938 – November 1, 2023
4 children. She was a member of Coos Country Club Ladies Association and the Alter Society at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church. She is survived by her husband, Maurie Bassett of North Bend; sons, Scott Bassett and wife, Ellen of Coos Bay, Roger Bassett and wife, Debi of Roseburg and Jeff Bassett and wife, Barb of Idaho Falls, ID; daughter, Debra Stemmerman and husband, Colby of Coos Bay; sisters, Margie Whisenhunt and Phyliss McGill of Sublimity; 9 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren. Terry Dean Jensen July 29, 1942 – November 4, 2023
Terry Dean Jensen, beloved father and grandfather, passed away on November 4, 2023, at the age of 81. Terry was born in Portland, Oregon on July 29, 1942, to parents Helge “Buck” Jensen and Isla Rose Jensen (Blodgett). Terry was drafted into the U.S. Army and deployed to Vietnam where he served his country from 19671968. Terry loved spending his time
outdoors fishing and hunting, and he loved his family, church family and the Lord with all his heart. Terry could always be heard humming hymn's as he went through his day. He was a best friend and will be greatly missed. Terry is survived by his son, Tad and wife, Lisa; grandchildren, Shaylynn and her husband, Caleb Owens and Gracie Jensen.
A service will be held at a later date in the summer.
Gary M. Borchman May 23, 1954 – November 26, 2023
Gary Borchman gained his heavenly wings on November 26, 2023. He was born in 1954 in Detroit, Michigan. Gary was the son of Lorraine and Leonard Borchman, although the majority of Gary’s life he spent with his loving foster parents, Agness and Henry Weathers, in Bridge, Oregon. Gary was a lifelong resident of Coos County, Oregon. Gary married the love of his life, Jo Anne Claiborne-Borchman on August 23, 1996. They were married for 27 wonderful years. Gary was blessed with a beautiful family; he raised 5 daughters and 1 son. Gary was a great dad to his kids; he was always full of laughter, teasing, and winks. He loved nothing more than his family. Gary spent most of his life as a logger and ran machinery
at the local Murphy’s and Roseburg Lumber mills. Gary also spent a couple of years logging in Alaska with other local loggers. Gary loved hunting, fishing, music, and guitar playing (much to the chagrin of his family)! He loved his Dodge Dart Swinger and towed it around everywhere that he moved! Gary is survived by his wife, Jo Anne Borchman; son, Tom; daughters, Melissa and Brenda; daughters and sons in law, Christie and Jeff, Lori and Jamie, Bridgett and Tom; sister, Darlene; 9 grandchildren; 1 great grandson; and many more beloved nephews and family. His family loved him immensely and they will forever miss the sparkle in his eyes, and his spontaneous air guitar playing. A Celebration of Life

Lela was born March 25, 1937 in Sublimity, Oregon the daughter of Peter and Jennie (Meier) Boedigheimer and died November 21, 2023 in Coos Bay. She married Maurice "Maurie" Earl Bassett November 30, 1957 in Sublimity and lived in Mill City, Hebo, Oregon and Washougal, Washington, and in North Bend since 1972. Myrna Joy Hoover was born January 18, 1938 in Coquille, Oregon and passed away November 1, 2023 in Coquille at the age of 85. Myrna was the daughter of Bart and Stella Gasner and grew up in Riverton and Norway. Myrna graduated from Myrtle Point High School in 1956. After High School she met her future husband, Terry Hoover. Myrna and Terry were married for over 61 years. Together they had two children, a son Barry and a daughter Wendy. Myrna worked at Security bank for many years after High School. Later, she decided to start a daycare in her home so she could be with her children as they grew up. She enjoyed taking care of many wonderful children in her time as a daycare operator. She was so happy to provide childcare for all the wonderful families she met throughout the years. Her job brought her so much joy. Later, after she retired she loved taking care of her grandchildren. Myrna spent many hours outdoors in her garden where she loved to grow roses and other flowers. She was known
by friends and family as a wonderful baker. Her homemade bread, cookies and Christmas Bon-Bon’s were enjoyed by many friends and family members over the years. One of the highlights of her life besides her children and grandchildren was being able to travel to Canada where she visited Butchart Gardens with her daughter, her son and his wife. Myrna is survived by her husband, Terry Hoover; son, Barry Hoover and his wife, Rita (Forbes); daughter, Wendy Forrester and her husband, Mike. Myrna had three grandchildren, Kale Forrester, Jordan Vasquez (husband, Sean) and Cooper Forrester. She also had three amazing great grandchildren, Oakley Forrester, Henry Vasquez and Scarlett Vasquez. All brought a smile to her face until her last days. She is also survived by numerous brothers and sisters-in-law, including Jackie Gasner of Roseburg; cousins, Margery Deaver and Beverly Baker; as well as her lifelong friends, Delores Barkley and Nancy Sargent. She was preceded in
death by her parents, Bart and Stella Gasner; brother, Meldon Gasner; and cousin, Deanna Stritzke. The family would like to thank the wonderful team at Pacific Home Health & Hospice, the ER team at Coquille Valley Hospital and the ambulance crew in Coquille. Also a big thank you to Myrna’s sisters-in-law, Janet Larios and Skippy Fisher; niece, Jolynn Best. At Myrna’s request, no services will be held. Victoria “Vicki” Jean Tyler February 28, 1946 – November 12, 2023
Victoria Tyler passed away peacefully on November 12, 2023, in North Bend, Oregon. She was 77. Vicki was born Victoria Jean Keck on February 28, 1946, in Boston, Massachusetts, to the late Abner Watson Keck and Bertha Patricia Keck. The daughter of a career military father, Vicki moved frequently as her father transferred from posting to posting. Her father was frequently away from home on extensive tours of duty, which instilled in Vicki an independent streak and a love of travel. Vicki combined a keen wit, above-average intelligence, and a stubbornness that could be simultaneously endearing and frustrating. As remembered by her younger brother Alan, she was a kind and thoughtful ‘big sister’ but as a daughter, she used her intractable determination to push a war-hardened, 30-year Navy veteran to his limits as a father. For Alan, it was delightful to watch. She was a good sister who always thought of him and helped make his childhood a little more enjoyable. And, more importantly, as Alan recalls, she was a good human. In 1962, as a 16-yearold high school junior in Norfolk, she met the love of her life, William ‘Mike’ Tyler. They were married three years later, on September 4, 1965. It was a marriage and a love story that would endure 58 years. When her husband joined the Navy in 1966,
the family relocated to Mike’s first duty station, the Boston Naval Shipyards. A year later, Vicki, Mike, and their first son Michael found themselves living in Long Beach, California. There, she played the role of ‘Navy wife’, as Mike began his overseas duty. In 1970, after her spouse finished his military service, the family moved back to Norfolk where their daughter ‘Laurie’ was born. Soon, the family of four was moving again as Mike’s job took them to Maryland. In 1975, the family moved to San Jose, California, where they would buy a home, live for 25 years, raise two children, and welcome two granddaughters and a grandson to their lives. Vicki continued her career, working as a Senior Contracts Administrator for Ampex/Quantegy, a Contract Specialist for Tektronix, and served as a CFO for Tippecanoe Systems. In 2001, her husband retired, and the family moved to Montana to care for Mike’s mother, Mary and sister, Catherine. In 2006, a second grandson was added to the Tyler family tree as Macallum ‘Mac’ Asher Tyler was born. Finally, in 2012, Vicki and Mike moved to Coos Bay to enjoy the weather and the coastal life. During their 58-year marriage, Vicki and Mike traveled extensively, including multiple trips to Mexico, the Bahamas,
and Canada, a threeweek vacation in Italy, and a tour of Europe, including the UK, France, Germany, and Austria. Vicki and Mike loved spending time together, often taking their jeep on off-roading adventures every chance they got. A favorite destination was Death Valley. Surviving Vicki’s passing is son, William Michael ‘Mike Jr’ Tyler Jr.; daughter, Lauraine ‘Laurie’ Michelle Brown; granddaughters, Emily Violet Brown and Sarah Elizabeth Brown; and grandsons, Kevin Matthew Brown, and Macallum Asher Tyler. Victoria was an intelligent, kind, funny, adventurous, and loving person. She loved everyone, and everyone loved her. She made the world a better place. Vicki will be dearly missed by her family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing her. May her soul rest in eternal peace. 6 Reasons Why You Should Take Your Mental Health Seriously

Many people underestimate the impact that mental illness can have on an individual or family. It can be difficult to admit that you have a mental health problem in your life. Secondly, it can be just as difficult in getting the people you know to understand your situation without making any kinds of judgments. As a result, here are six reasons why you should make your mental health an important priority in your life. 1. Your situation will improve if you get help: Your anxieties and fears can be challenging to manage and more than likely you will need some help. Just as you talk to your doctor about your regular health, you should not be hesitant in seeking help for your mental health. If left untreated, your anxieties and fears may not go away. 2. Drugs and alcohol are not the answer: Drugs and alcohol can make your problems more complicated. Many people have said that drugs and alcohol will only add more problems to your situation. Be smart and learn how to cope with your
mental health issues by talking to a qualified professional. There are many health professionals in your area that can give you some ideas on where you can go for assistance. 3. You will save time and money: Eventually, you will have to confront your fears and mental health issues. Save yourself the time and heartache and confront your problems now rather than later. You will save months of struggling by getting help right away. The sooner you get assistance the faster you will start getting some relief. 4. You are not alone: Everyone deals with fear, stress, and anxiety in one’s life whether your friends and others care to admit it. In addition, do not be embarrassed that you are getting help. We all learn new things from others on a daily basis and learning how to manage your anxieties is no different. In addition, your goal is to get your life back on track and not to get everyone’s approval. If people start asking you questions, just say your dealing with stress. Most people can relate to dealing with stress and anxiety!
5. Do not make the mistake of doing nothing: There are many people who struggled with anxiety and other mental health related issues, and they tried to ignore their problems. As a result, some of these people struggled on a daily basis and eventually things became more difficult. It can be scary asking for assistance, but the key is to take things one day at a time. 6. You have a variety of options: There are many mental health support groups, organizations, and counselors in your area that can help get your life back on track. Talk to your doctor to get more details on where you can go for some assistance. Help is available but you must be willing to make the choice of getting better. Remember that every problem has a solution. You just have to make the effort to find the answers. HOLY COW! HISTORY: Washington, Napoleon and An Unlucky British General

Ridley Scott’s biopic “Napoleon” topped the global box office over the Thanksgiving weekend. But some moviegoing history lovers are trashing it for playing fast and loose with facts. “Disappointing” is the most charitable response from their ranks, and that’s putting it mildly. The flick’s faults aside, the current “Napoleon” buzz makes this the ideal time to recall the story of a spectacularly unlucky British general who had an unfortunate encounter with the Little Corporal — and with the Father of Our Country as well. Charles O’Hara began life under a cloud. He was born out of wedlock in 1740. That may not sound like a big deal today, but it was hugely problematic to the aristocratic crowd that ran Georgian England. His father, a dashing
army officer whose star was rising, accepted the boy and made sure he followed in the old man’s military footsteps. O’Hara entered the army when he was 12 (a not uncommon age at the time) and quickly began his own ascent up the command ladder. He was a strict disciplinarian but popular with his troops despite it. When Daddy became a field marshal in 1763, his connections helped O’Hara rise up the ranks with lightning speed. By the end of the American Revolutionary War, O’Hara was a brigadier general serving in the South under Lord Cornwallis. Severely wounded in the battle of Guildford Courthouse in North Carolina, he nevertheless accompanied the British army to Virginia — only to be trapped by the American army and the French navy in the Siege of Yorktown. When the Brits were finally forced to give up, Cornwallis refused to do his duty and attend the October 19, 1781, surrender ceremony. Pleading illness, he foisted the unpleasant job onto O’Hara. O’Hara then tried to get in his own parting dig against the Americans. When it came time to formally surrender his sword, he handed it to the Comte de Rochambeau. But the French commander deferred to Gen. George Washington, who then made O’Hara hand it over to Gen. Benjamin Lincoln. That was significant because Lincoln had been forced to surrender to the British when Charles-
ton, S.C., fell 18 months earlier. O’Hara’s bad luck continued back in England, where his massive gambling debts caught up with him, and he was forced to flee to the Continent to avoid his creditors. His old boss Cornwallis eventually came to his rescue, bailing him out so O’Hara could return home. But he didn’t stay there long. As the century drew to a close, he was promoted to lieutenant general and made governor of Gibraltar. But just when it seemed O’Hara’s life was back on track, his train derailed again. With the French Revolution in full swing, attention focused on the important port city of Toulon. The British, Prussians, Austrians, Dutch and Spanish monarchies wanted to keep the seeds of revolution that had sent France’s king to guillotine from blowing into their countries. French fighters opposed to the revolution seized the port. The British sent soldiers led by O’Hara to support them. French Revolutionary forces were also dispatched to Toulon for a showdown. On Sept. 8, 1793, a young, untested French officer arrived and was placed in command of the Revolutionary artillery. He devised a plan that led to the capture of a key hill, giving his guns command of the port city. There was a series of back-and-forth fighting. In the final round, O’Hara was wounded again. And once again, he was forced to surrender to the commander
of the forces who inflicted defeat. It was an obscure Corsican named Napoleon Bonaparte. (The victory at Toulon launched Bonaparte down the path toward becoming Emperor a decade later.) O’Hara spent two years in a Paris prison (where he was threatened with a date with Madame Guillotine) until he was finally exchanged for the Comte de Rochambeau, the same officer he had tried to surrender to at Yorktown 14 years earlier. He fell in love and got engaged, but the relationship fell apart when he was appointed governor of Gibraltar again, and his betrothed refused to leave England. He died on the Rock from
his old war wounds in 1802 at the age of 61. (Or 62. His precise age is fuzzy due to the murky circumstances surrounding his illegitimate birth.) While his record on the battlefield was only so-so at best, Charles O’Hara holds a distinction no other officer could claim — or want: He was the only person in history to surrender to both George Washington and Napoleon Bonaparte. The first two photos I am sharing this week came from an incident which occurred in February of 1961 when a crane, driven by Marvin McCue, fell through the dock at Moore Mill. Fortunately, Marvin, who can be seen in the first photo looking at the crane, which lay on the mudflat below the mill, suffered only minor bruises. The photo caption, from the Western World, reads: "Plunge into cool waters of the Coquille River, which rise and fall with the tide under the Moore Mill & Lumber Co. dock, was taken Friday afternoon by Marvin McCue when the 25-ton crane he was operating went through the dock and onto the tide-covered mudflat. "McCue rode the equipment to the bottom, and although the operator's seat is on the side which is down in the water, he made his way out a window even before fellow employees could climb down the ladder-like boom of the crane to help him. Aside from bruises and a soaking, McCue said he was unhurt. "Looking into the hole with McCue is Harold Whitsett, one of the company's mechanics on hand to help with the salvage operation Saturday. In the second photo is a Sause Bros. big mobile crane, with a lifting capacity of 40 tons, which was used to pick up the Northwest 25 crane. "It was necessary to uncouple the heavy cab from the tracked undercarriage so the two parts could be more easily moved and worked on by repairmen. "McCue was moving the crane, between the yard and the bargeloading dock on usual 'pads' or timbers 6 inches thick and 24-feet long laid on the dock, when the accident occurred. "Both the NW 25 and the bigger crane have traversed the same dock at other times, but apparently the shorter 'wheel-base' of the NW 25 found a weak spot between two 'bents' of the dock." "She stays active, takes no medications and is always in good spirits. She helps clean the house, cooks, irons and is tremendously supportive of any of my endeavors. I also need to mention her wonderful sense of humor and her weekly beauty shop visits. She likes to dress up and go out for a meal at least once a week." I can attest to the fact that it was a wonderful meal, with turkey and all the trimmings, including a "to die for" piece of pumpkin pie. I will have more information next week as to who helped make the dinner such a success. ---------------------------I do know that Covid is once again spreading through the community, with at least 15 people, who had planned to help with the holiday meal in one way or another, calling in to say they had Covid. Hopefully most have been vaccinated and are not too ill. ---------------------------The beautiful weather, combined with a very successful Nog Walk and Santa and Mrs. Claus greeting children in the Trolley, combined for a great GBA-sponsored tree-lighting ceremony Saturday evening at the Bandon Visitor Center. I had been asked to light the tree, but at the last minute, no one could get the PA system working, so we shut down the music and started the countdown to light the tree. It was a wonderful evening, and the town was crowded. I just hope the merchants had some success, as well. I do know that GBA sold over 300 glasses for the Nog Walk, so that will give you an indication of how many people were in town, not too mention the families
who came to see Santa. ---------------------------I keep reading about things happening at the Bandon Events Center, and if you're like me, you scratch your head and try to figure out where that might be. It turns out it is just north of the Coos Forest Protective Association building seven or eight miles south of Bandon, apparently operated by a private person or maybe a group, just not sure. Confusing is the first thing that comes to mind; would have made more sense to call it Laurel Grove Event Center or even Four Mile Event Center, but Bandon?? ---------------------------A woman posted on NextDoor late last week that once again she was writing about unleashed dogs at the baseball field. I assume she is referring to the field in east Bandon. "While walking my leashed dog I noticed a male walking his dogs unleashed. I stayed back and then noticed he and his dogs went into the bushes to let me go by. It was too late to turn back as his dog ran out of the brush and ran towards us. I held on tight to my dog and fell to the ground into the fence. I was not hurt badly. He finally called his dog and I ran past quickly. What is it gonna take before someone gets hurt in the middle of a dog fight. We all want to enjoy our walks. We have lost respect for one another. Please leash your dogs." Actually there have been several accounts of people getting injured or dogs injured or killed
in dog attacks in the last year or so, including at least one attack on the beach, and the death of a little dog on Franklin Avenue. ---------------------------I received a call from Bandon native Joan Goodbrod, who was about 4 at the time of the fire and was interested in the recent post and photo in my column about the postfire WPA housing that was built in East Bandon. Joan and her parents, Joe and Bea DeCosta, had lived in one of the houses. Joan now lives in an assisted living center in Woodland, Wash., to be near her daughter, Michelle. Joan will be 91 on Dec. 16th., and wanted me to wish her many Bandon friends, "Merry Christmas," as she will not be sending out cards this year. Her address is Woodland Care Center, POB 69 (Apt. 112) Woodland, Wash., 98674. ---------------------------The Coos County Sheriff's Office sent out a pres release last week about a domestic violence case which occurred Nov. 21 around 2:30 a.m. on Tom Smith Road, east of Bandon. They arrested Alejandro Lopez, 34, for domestic violence. After fleeing from the residence, Lopez and his vehicle were located by Bandon Police Officer Price who took him into custody at the request of Deputy Freerksen. He was to be arraigned on charges of Domestic Strangulation, a class C felony, and Domestic Harassment, a class B misdemeanor. As of Nov.

but taking in all of these paintings is a delightful experience. Bandon High School art teacher Jen Ells showed her paintings earlier this year, and now fills the cases with her ceramic pots, bowls, and mugs in Earth tones and soft colors. All works are available for purchase.

Dear Abby: Forty years ago, a neighborhood boy fathered a child with a neighborhood girl. "Billy" was 17 at the time, and "Becky" was 14 or 15. Both were friends of mine. They were not a steady couple. She liked him, but I feel he used her. I heard that she married an older gentleman who accepted the baby, "Matt," as his own. Ten years ago, I found Matt on Facebook. I told him I knew his mother, and he shared her contact information with me. When I called Becky, we enjoyed talking about old times, and I let her know that Billy had passed away. She informed me that her husband had also passed away. I was surprised when she told me she never told Matt who his biological father was. He was raised believing his biological father was Becky's husband. I have photographs of Billy, and Matt has an aunt he is unaware of. As tempted as I am to inform him who his father was, I know that is not the right thing to do. We don't communicate regularly, but Becky and I are friends on Facebook. I believe she's having health issues now. Abby, If she passes away, do you think I should let Matt know who his father was, share the photographs and let him know about his aunt? I think I'd want to know.

The question you should pose is this: Would she want her son to think he's all alone in the world after she's gone? I do not think you should lay this news on Matt after his mother's death. His parents would not be there to answer his inevitable questions, and he would likely feel hurt and angry that he wasn't told the truth.
My wife is an active member of her church, whereas I am a non-believer. It is, of course, her right to practice her religion and enjoy belonging to a community of like-minded people. The difficulty stems from the many hours spent every week above and beyond the services, such as prayer sessions, Bible study groups, etc. I have begun to resent her heavy involvement in church administration that has nothing to do with worship, and the resulting lack of spontaneity in our relationship. To plan an activity or vacation, she needs at least two months' notice because of her never-ending, self-imposed commitments. This has increased over the years. We have a large circle of friends, and our marriage has no other major issues. We try to find a balance, but it's not easy. What advice do you have for us?

Country singer Aaron Tippin had a song a few years ago entitled, “You got to stand for something or you’ll fall for anything”. Our Legislative Action Team (LAT) takes that to heart. It’s important for your Chamber to promote those things which give us a positive economic climate to grow your business and create a
healthy community for your family, while also taking a stand against those bills that would harm its future. The LAT has actively participated in every legislative session since 2011. In the 2023 long session, they tracked and worked the bills in support of the Oregon State Chamber of Commerce (OSCC) Legislative Agenda. While we have not been successful in every fight, the Chambers of
Commerce in Oregon, are having an impact in Salem. The LAT, over the past few years, has developed a strong relationship with our legislators through the OSCC Chamber Day at the capitol, twice monthly teleconferences with them which we sponsor with the college, and direct contact with them and their offices. During the session, our Team meets as many times as necessary, each month, to be timely
and effective. The 2024 short session running 35 days at the legislature will be intense. With its compressed “bill to law” processing time, it is filled with challenges for Oregon businesses and communities which the LAT is striving to balance for all of us. Beyond the legislature, your LAT is actively participating in many other local issues, to make a difference for you. Too often we think if we had more time,
assets or help, we could really get something done. I am reminded of an old hymn which says “To the many duties ever near you now be true. Brighten the corner where you are”. Sponsored by the Egyptian Theatre Preservation Association, this special event has been a gift to the community from the musicians and the theatre for forty nine years. Concert goers will enjoy the power of the 1925 Wurlitzer organ when Lee and Paul take their place at the console. The only one of its kind in Oregon still played in its original
installation, there continues an on-going effort to maintain and restore this wonderful instrument to its former glory. Lee Littlefield has performed since high school days on the Wurlitzer and has performed in this concert since its inception in 1974, She worked tirelessly on the theatre restoration and is excited at any opportunity to play The Mighty Wurlitzer. Paul Quarino, one of the West Coast’s premier Wurlitzer concert artists, has given nearly four decades of expertise
and elbow grease to the efforts in keeping the organ operational. Paul relocated to the coast from Portland, serves on the ETPA Board of Directors and is the organist at Harmony United Methodist Church in Coos Bay. Coos Bay officers honored for lifesaving efforts Coos Bay Police Department Officers Nolan Scoville and Jordan Moeller were presented with Life Saving Awards (with valor) at the Oregon Peace Officers’ Association annual banquet at the Spirit Mountain Casino in Grand Ronde. The two CBPD officers, along with Sgt. Shane Dunning of the North Bend Police Department were nominated for the award by Lieutenant Luke Taylor of the Coos Bay Fire Department for their heroic actions in the
early morning hours of May 17. Below is an excerpt from an email from Lt. Taylor to CBPD Chief Chapanar on May 17: "This morning at 0134 we were dispatched for a fire at the Global Inn RM 107. While enroute we received updates confirming that the room was occupied, and bystanders were unable to remove the occupant. We received an update from CBPD Officer Jordan Moeller who was first on scene and saw the occupants’ legs at the door. Officer Moeller provided an update that
the occupant was “barely conscious and barely breathing.” Upon arrival CBFD witnessed Officer Moeller, CBPD Officer Nolan Scoville, as well as NBPD Sgt. Shane Dunning removing the occupant from the room and into fresh clean air. At that time the occupant was not conscious. CBFD personnel started rendering aid, Officers Moeller, Scoville, and Dunning assisted with medical aid. Bay Cities Ambulance arrived on scene; patient care was turned over to BCA Paramedic. CBFD personnel as well as Officers
Moeller, Scoville, and Sgt. Dunning carried the patient to the gurney. Patient was transported to our local hospital in critical condition. During our investigation we learned that Officer Scoville and Sgt. Dunning had each deployed a five-pound dry chem fire extinguisher. Officer Scoville and Sgt. Dunning significantly hindered the ability for
the fire to grow, and kept the fire contained to the room origin. All and all, the three of these officers went above and beyond and performed out of their normal job description. If it was not for their quick heroic efforts the occupant may have been deceased upon CBFD arrival. Officer Scoville and Sgt. Dunning’s swift actions to use extinguishers on the fire kept the fire from spreading to other rooms and potentially creating more fire victims. Due to their actions, I would like to officially nominate Coos Bay Police Officers Jordan Moeller,
Nolan Scoville, and North Bend Police Sgt. Shane Dunning for the Oregon Peace Officers Association [award]." The CBPD would like to thank CBFD Lt. Taylor for his recognition and nomination of these officers. We would also like to give special thanks and recognition to NBPD Sgt. Shane Dunning and the North Bend Police Department for the assistance with this call and their continued partnership and willingness to lend a hand regardless of city boundaries.
