Return to the Sea Stranded sea turtle found near Coos Bay released a year later BY BREE LAUGHLIN The World

The tides had taken a turn for the worst for the sea turtle dubbed “Pumpkin” in October, 2022. The endangered Olive Ridley sea turtle washed ashore at Horsfall Campground in Coos County. The

sea turtle was found to be cold stunned – a condition that can render them incapable of eating or navigating. “Sea turtles can forage the open ocean off Oregon’s shores without issue during the summer—but if they don’t turn south before the weather changes, they risk getting caught in cold currents and winter storms,"

said Courtney Klug, communications and marketing specialist with the Oregon Coast Aquarium. “As such, Oregon sees a marked increase in sea turtle strandings between fall and spring,” she said. Over the course of a year, Sea Turtle continued on page 12

The exhibit also includes a selection of small format Polaroid image transfers. Sharp’s still life images highlight his experimentation with still life photography, which focuses on capturing everyday objects as they are found. Sharp says, "I…have a keen interest in the photography of small things, such as ordinary household or found objects. I like waiting for soft, vivid light to bring out the color, simplicity, and beauty of things that otherwise wouldn't attract much attention. Close-up photography is a fine way to enjoy quiet moments in my kitchen or by a sunlit window." The exhibit will be available during the month of November. The exhibit can be viewed in the Conference Room at the North Bend Public Library. Gary Sharp was the director of the North Bend Public Library until his retirement in 2017. His photography has been featured in exhibits at the Coos Bay Public Library, Portland’s Blue Sky Gallery, and at the K-21 Artist Collective in Copenhagen, Denmark. Additionally, his photographs have been published in Oregon People Magazine and in two literary works which feature writers and artists of Coos County, Voices in Winter Rain and Spirit Fish: Voices of the South Coast. Winners announced for ODFW’s annual stamp art contests

The winning artwork was selected for the 2024 Waterfowl, Upland Game Bird, and Habitat Conservation stamp art competitions. Waterfowl category (Trumpeter Swan) first place went to Richard Clifton of Milford, Del. Upland Game Bird (Gray Partridge) first place went to Roberta Wise of Bandon. Habitat Conservation first place went to Buck Spencer of Junction City, depicting a Shorteared Owl. First place artists each receive a prize award of $2,000. This year’s artwork was judged at Bush Barn

Art Center in Salem on Nov. 4 by a panel of independent judges. A total of 10 entries were received depicting Gray Partridge, 23 entries depicting Trumpeter Swan and 24 entries depicting select Oregon Conservation Strategy Species for the habitat conservation contest. Winning artwork will be the face of 2024 collector stamps and other promotional items that benefit Oregon's wildlife and their habitats. Proceeds from product sales are used for habitat improvement, research, surveys, and conservation projects.

Santa is coming downtown Nov. 24 The Friday after Thanksgiving, November 24, the Coos Bay Downtown Association will welcome Santa in Coos Bay. Santa will join Mayor Joe Benetti to light the Coos Bay Christmas tree at the Coos Bay Visitors Center. Festivities begin at the Visitor’s Center around 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 24, with music from Bi-Coastal Media and Christmas carols while waiting for Santa to arrive. The South Coast Dance Project will perform in the parking lot at 5:15 p.m. Santa is scheduled to arrive at the Visitors Center around 5:30 p.m. where the crowd will greet him and help with the annual Christmas tree lighting with Mayor Joe Benetti. Apple cider will be provided courtesy of Farr's True Value and cookies courtesy of the Coos Bay Downtown Association.

From the Visitors Center, follow Santa over to the Egyptian Theatre for a photo opportunity with the kids around 6 p.m. A free showing of "Elf" the movie with Will Ferrell will start around 7:15ish p.m. Visits with Santa and Friday’s showing of the “Elf” are sponsored by South Coast Family Dentistry. All who attend are asked to bring at least one pair of new socks rolled up to be tossed at the movie screen during the snowball fight scene. All socks will be collected and donated to local homeless shelters. You can catch a second showing of “Elf” and participate in the Sockball Fight, free of charge, on Saturday, November 25. Come play with Bandon Playhouse! Auditions for “Radium Girls,” a play written by D.W. Gregory and directed by Stephanie Jones, will be held at 6 p.m. December 11, 12 and 13 at the Sprague Community theater in Bandon City Park, 1202 11th St. SW. Play rehearsals will begin in January. Performances are scheduled for two weekends– Feb. 23, 24, 25, and March 1, 2, and 3, 2024. "Radium Girls" is based on a true story from the 1920s, when radium was hailed as a miracle cure and luminous watch dials were a craze. The action follows a watch dial painter who has contracted a mysterious illness as she struggles with her employer, her family, and public opinion for recognition and justice. This fast-paced, highly theatrical play explores the intersection of science and culture and celebrates the resiliency of the human spirit. Fans of historic film and TV dramas such as “Call the Midwife,” “Hidden Figures,” and “Erin Brockovich,” are sure to be inspired by “Radium Girls.” The play features roles for 9 to 20 actors ages 15 and older who play more than 30 characters, including watch factory co-workers and

friends, lovers, relatives, attorneys, scientists, consumer advocates, and myriad bystanders. Interested stage crew members are also invited to attend auditions. Director Stephanie Jones moved to Bandon two years ago and joined the Bandon Playhouse board of directors in 2023. She has more than 30 years experience in professional theatre as a costume designer and costume shop manager. One

of her most significant and favorite theatrical experiences was filling the role of Artistic / Managing Director for Pacific Okinawa Players, a community theater group on the military bases in Okinawa, Japan. Stephanie believes every community deserves theatre, art, music and dance. In directing “Radium Girls” with Bandon Playhouse, Stephanie is excited to get more involved in the community and help

Carole Ann Voliva

July 14, 1939 – August 31, 2023

Billie “Bill” D. Hendrickson, 84, of Reedsport, Oregon passed away on August 31, 2023 in Lower Umpqua Hospital. Bill was born in Anderson, Indiana on July 14, 1939 to his parents Herman Hendrickson and Gladys (Michaels) Hendrickson. Bill attended high school at Anderson High. He met the love of his life Virginia Rolston in Wichita, Kansas and they married on October 15, 1957. Bill was a kind hearted man, always ready to lend a helping hand and never shy about sharing his thoughts. He enjoyed traveling to find new rocks and exploring new places. Bill is survived by his sisters, Beverly Sims and Jane Tompkins; as well as various nephews, nieces and

his “Rock family”. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Virginia Hendrickson; his parents; and 15 siblings. After attending Anderson High School, Bill and Virginia followed family out to Oregon in 1957. Bill worked various positions at local mills including Menasha and Weyerhaeuser where he retired. He was known for his woodworking skills and his talent of creating beautiful pieces. In Bill’s free time, he indulged in his hobby of rock hounding. He found joy in searching for the perfect rock, which involved trial and error so many rocks were required to be accumulated to identify the perfect one. He enjoyed making spheres from the various rocks

he found or that were brought to him to grind and polish. It would take him 36 hours to make one sphere and he would laugh stating he had enough to keep him busy for more years than he could count. Bill’s interment will be completed at Dunes Memorial Chapel in Reedsport where he will be placed next to his wife, Virginia. The interment will occur on November 17, 2023 at 3 PM.

Jeffrey Jenkins January 25, 1958 – October 29, 2023

In loving memory of Jeffrey Jenkins, who was born in Phoenix, Arizona on January 25, 1958, and passed on October 29, 2023 from natural causes. His family moved to Myrtle Point, Oregon when he was 8 years old. His parents, Jack Jenkins and Esther (Lattimore) Jenkins both passed before him, leaving his only sibling, Leslie (Jenkins) Shriver as the sole survivor of this family. He graduated from Southern Oregon University, Ashland, Oregon, and initially worked several years in Portland Oregon.

He spent decades focusing on his career with Return, Inc., in Minneapolis, Minnesota, until his retirement as a Manager of Support Services. At the time of his passing, he was living back in his home town of Myrtle Point, Oregon. He was a gentle man and a gentleman, with many friends both in Minnesota and Oregon. In his younger days he was an avid dirt bike rider and fisherman. He continued to enjoy fishing, especially during Salmon/ Steelhead season, and in reducing the invasive

Bass population in local rivers. His remains were cremated, and he will be buried in plot 98-4, next to his parents in the Dora Pioneer Cemetery, located 16.5 miles from Myrtle Point.

Carole Ann was born in Taft, California on September 17, 1946, to Donald “Glen” and Delma Lee “Peggy” Davis. Her sister, Colleen Diane Davis would arrive just 15 months later. Carole and Colleen were incredibly close until Colleen’s passing in September, 1997. Carole graduated from Taft Union High School in 1964. After high school she met and married her first husband, Kenneth Riedemann with whom they shared a daughter, Tracy. In 1965, Carole started her career as a switchboard telephone operator with Continental Telephone Company where she remained until the closing of Contel in 1987. After the marriage to Kenneth ended, she met and married Charles Robert Voliva, Jr. in May 1970. They bought their first house in Maricopa, California. Soon afterwards, Charles Robert Voliva III would arrive in March of 1972. Charles and Carole raised their children in Maricopa, California where the family enjoyed riding horses and motorcycles. She cherished spending time with her parents in Pismo Beach. After Charles’s passing in 1991, she met her life partner, Leroy Millican, with whom she shared over 30 years of memories. After retirement, they moved to Bandon, Oregon where they both worked hard building their dream home. While in Bandon,

she made many new friends who echoed Carole was a beautiful person inside and out. Carole was passionate about classic cars. While on a road trip she spotted a 1956 Chevrolet Bel Air in desperate need of some TLC and a new home. She purchased the car and trailered it back to Bandon, Oregon where she restored the car with the help of some amazing mechanics. She had an appreciation for cars and could speak all about engines, as well as all makes and models of classic cars. She also enjoyed watching NASCAR and making ceramics. She painted an entire ceramic Christmas village to decorate her home. Carole was an amazing cook and delighted in preparing a holiday feast for friends and family. Carole, with her vibrant red hair, could often be seen driving around Bandon and Coos Bay in her teal green and white 1956 Chevy Bel Air. She would often participate in the “Cruz the Coos”, and she loved to dress up in 1950’s attire for the events. Carole adored her family and never let a moment go by without telling them how proud she was of her kids, grandkids, and great grandkids. On November 3, 2023, Carole Ann Voliva, 77, suddenly passed away in Bandon, Oregon, the result of a tragic car accident near her home. Carole was on her way to see the local vet with her beloved kitties, Buster

and Ruby, when she was involved in a head-on collision on Highway 101. Buster suffered a broken pelvis and Ruby ran away. Carole Ann Voliva is survived her life partner, Leroy Millican; daughter, Tracy Chitwood; son-inlaw, Mike Chitwood; son, Charles “Chuck” Robert Voliva III and daughter-in-law, Connie Voliva; grandson-in-law, Craig Lemar Curtis Jr.; granddaughter, Chelsey Voliva, partner Mikah Morgan; grandson, Charles “Chuckie” Robert Voliva IV and fiancé, Trinity Noland; great grandchildren, Craig Lemar Curtis III, Taylnn Voliva, Cohen Morgan and arriving in January 2024, Tori Ann Voliva. Carole Ann Voliva is preceded in death by her parents, Delma Lee “Peggy” Davis and Donald “Glen” Davis; her sister, Colleen Woods; late husband, Charles Robert Voliva, Jr.; and granddaughters, Courtney Lynn Curtis, Jennifer, and Nicole Hill. That changed when Postmaster General Robert Hannegan gave 21-year-old first daughter Margaret an Irish Setter puppy named Mike. The pooch was quickly banished to the Trumans’ Missouri home, where he developed rickets (believed to have been caused by being fed too many rich table scraps by staffers) and was quietly regifted to a family in Virginia. Truman is said to have called Mike “a damned nuisance.” But the worst was yet to come. A woman in Truman’s native Missouri felt it just wasn’t right for the Trumans to be without canine companionship, regardless of how the head of the Free World felt about dogs. One day in December 1947, a metal crate showed up bearing the simple address, “Harry S. Truman, The White House, Washington, D.C.” Inside was a cocker spaniel puppy named Feller. Pictures were released to the press, and dog-loving Americans were smitten by the adorable addition to the First Family. Adorable to everyone, that is, except Truman. He was heading into a re-election campaign that virtually every pundit said he was sure to lose, Josef Stalin was making increasing mischief in Europe, and labor unrest threatened to cripple an already-weak economy. With his attention pulled in a dozen directions simultaneously, he sim-

Author Stanley Coren writes that Truman privately called Feller “a dumb dog” that he simply had to “get rid of.” Several months later a reporter asked, “Whatever happened to Feller?” “Who?’ the president snapped, caught off-guard by the name. Reminded of the puppy he had received, Truman brushed it off with, “Oh, he’s around here someplace.” What was arguably the lamest coverup in presidential history immediately fell apart. Marine Deputy Robert Baker receives lifesaving award On July 14, Coos County Sheriff’s Marine Deputy Robert Baker was conducting a routine patrol of Tenmile Lake in Lakeside, when he encountered a capsized sailboat with the single occupant struggling to cling to the side of the vessel, obviously in distress. Deputy Baker aided the man, who was not wearing a personal flotation device or dressed for the incident and brought him to safety. Had Deputy Baker not been on patrol in the area and taken quick action by removing the man from the cold water, the man very well could have drowned. On November 7, Deputy Baker was recognized by the Oregon State Marine Board with a lifesaving award for his actions that day. The award was presented before the Board of Commissioners by Marine Board Member Val Early and Marine Board Director Larry Warren.

As I See It: The Central Warehouse

I found a neat story in the January 1924 special 28-page issue of Western World, which highlighted many of the businesses operating at that time, including The Central Warehouse owned and operated by J.E. Walstrom, who was the grandfather of the late Barbara Norton McMahon. "The Central Warehouse is an important business in connection with the shipping of the Port of Bandon. Mr. Walstrom has a total of 385 feet of harbor frontage (first photo) owned and leased and two large warehouses. One is used exclusively for storing freight and has two stories and is so arranged that freight from vessels can be loaded into the first or second floor. A portion of the second warehouse is rented and the rest is also used for storage. There is a total of 35,885 square feet of space in the two buildings so an enormous amount of goods can be taken care of. "Cargoes of the ocean going vessels and also the river boats are handled and the contents of the warehouses at times consists of almost everything from automobiles to hay. "Mr. Walstrom acts as agent for the steamer Brooklyn, owned by Sudden & Christensen of San Francisco, and the steamer Elizabeth (second photo) owned by E. and E.T. Kruse of San Francisco. The Elizabeth is the only passenger boat operating between Bandon and San Francisco and has been the old standby of Bandon for many years. She carries 27 passengers. "With offices in the warehouse but under the name of the Central Transfer company, Mr. Walstrom also conducts a trucking business." After the fire Mr. Walstrom built his large warehouse, with sliding doors on the north side of the building to load and unload freight. It later served as Graydon Stinnett's Bandon Fisheries business, and today it is the home of the Wheelhouse restaurant. Another article I found in the Jan. 1924 Western World is headlined "$100,000 Hotel Being Planned." "A project for a new $100,000 hotel is being promoted by George

Laird, manager of the Westland (third picture) and several others interested. Plans have been drawn for a stucco finished building with red tile roof which would give accommodations for about 100 people. The plans call for a structure with a large basement where there would be a billiard room and other conveniences, and office, dining room and guest rooms on the two floors above. "The site which has been selected is a high point just above the business section of the city and commanding a fine view of the river and ocean. "With the opening of the Roosevelt Highway as a through route it is expected that there will be a large number of motor tourists passing through the city and that big hotel will be needed." At first I thought it might be the Gallier Hotel that the article referred to, but the location did not describe the riverfront site of the Gallier. My guess is that the hotel described in this article was never built. ------------------------I learned recently that Rhonda Grable Haga, wife of John Haga, and a long time resident of Bandon, died Aug.16 after a short illness. A 1975 graduate of Bandon High School, Rhonda was 66. She and John were married in 1976 and raised two sons, Seth and Jared. I read an obituary in the Register-Guard Sunday for John Bradley "Brad" McNutt, a former resident of the Bandon and Vida areas, who died Sept. 27 at the age of 63. Brad was born in Roseburg to John and Lois McNutt. He is survived by his daughter Anna Lynn McNutt, three sisters, a niece and six nephews. When they lived in Bandon, Brad and his father developed the Bandon Shopping Center, which was later managed by Brad. ------------------------After reporting that the Bullards Beach campground closed on Oct. 15, the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department has decided to open Loop C, effective last week, and said that campsites and yurts will be available for reservations from Nov. 13, 2023, to Jan. 1, 2024. The campground will then close again on Jan. 1 through May 22 to upgrade the main sewer line. People can still enjoy

the day use area, boat ramp, lighthouse and horse camp area, which will remain open. ------------------------One of my favorite teachers, Lloyd Gabriel, who taught at Bandon High School in the '50s, will celebrate his 102nd birthday on Dec. 2. His wife, Ruth, who also taught at the high school, is 96. Gayle Thompson was a great gal and much loved by all who knew her. ------------------------The Coos County Sheriff's Office sent out a press release about the arrest of Jeffrey S. Schiro, 36, who was charged with fourth-degree assault and harassment after an incident on Bally Loop.

Schiro was identified as the suspect in what was described by the police as a disturbance. This means that BLFF received $8,187.50 to purchase new books. The next meeting of 100 Strong Bandon is Wednesday, Nov. 15, at the Bandon Rain Taproom from 5 to 6:30 p.m. The group meets every three months, and each of us gives $50 to the selected charity. Rapunzel quite a hit in Coquille

It was out of the tower and on the run as a zany cast of friends and foes helped Rapunzel’s harrowing escape from the towering imprisonment of Madame Gothel. With a dash of French flair and a pinch of personal triumph and

friendship, you have a story you can’t forget. Forty-six local students put on an amazing production of Rapunzel at the Sawdust Theatre this weekend. With an audition on Monday and only five days of rehearsals, these talent-

ed drama princes and princesses put on an unforgettable show. Would it surprise you to know that the story of Rapunzel happened in France? Well, it didn’t really, but our story took an audience on a frivolous frolic through the French countryside. The Ogres (Jude Bustin, Monroe King, Brogan McNair, Kylor Paul) garden in the Mushroom (Lelyn Bustin, Aletta Clauson, Eden Fish, Thea Horst, Brody McNair, Ruthie Scott, Muriel Vaughn) patch while the Corn and Potato (McKenzie O-Banion, Grace Sapp, Adrian Rangel) spies reported back to Madame Gothel (Shaleena Crawford). Frenchy (Tyler Bowlan) and his intense friends, the Wood Elves (Chloe Baker, Jaden Ballard, Josselyn Brammer, Madison Brammer, Lyric Cagley, Rebekah Delyria, Grace Huff, Michelle Isley, Lillian Wirebaugh) did their best to help Rapunzel (Valorie Lambson and Elizabeth Huff ) escape the grasp of Madame Gothel. Well, it was not that bad because the Pixies (Addilyn Sherritt, Noel Yarnell) foiled the Gremlins’ plans most of the time. Somewhere in the story were unicorns ( Rowan Belter, Madi Isley) that Rapunzel wished for (kind of). In short, Rapunzel and all the rest of the characters told a silly tale of personal triumph and friendship while Madam Gothel learned the importance of kindness. The Missoula Children’s Theater International Touring group is brought to Coquille twice a year through the non profit CREATE Center whose mission is to promote art, theater, dance, music and other programs in our community. Those involved in the rescue of the endangered sea turtle say it was a series of key pieces that came together to make the rehabilitation a success. “The citizen who first reported the animal did so quickly, and stayed nearby to observe the animal and help responders find it in a timely manner,” said Klug. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife responded to the initial stranding. They secured the sea turtle and transferred it to Florence, where they met staff from the Oregon Coast Aquarium. “From there, our dedicated team of aquarists sprang into action,” Klug said. The Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport is one of three wildlife rehabilitation facilities in the Pacific Northwest, and the only one in Oregon, authorized by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to provide specialized care to endangered marine life, like sea otters and sea turtles. Aquarium staff determined newly-dubbed Pumpkin was a sub-adult female. Lethargic

and cold-stunned, she required round-the-clock monitoring and treatment. Cold-stunned turtles present a unique challenge, aquarium representatives said. To avoid shocking the animal, their body temperature must be raised slowly. Pumpkin arrived at the Oregon Coast Aquarium with a body temperature just below 60 degrees Fahrenheit. She was transferred to increasingly warm water baths, raising her body temperature five degrees per day until it reached a 75 degree temperature. At the same time aquarium staff were providing care – they were also coordinating with other wildlife facilities to establish long-term rehabilitation and release plans. “Sea turtles are often stabilized at the aquarium and then transferred to facilities such as SeaWorld San Diego, who can provide prolonged care and arrange to release turtles to the warm waters off the coast of California,” Klug said. After receiving confirmation that SeaWorld San Diego staff were prepared to take in Pumpkin, a flight plan unfolded. The transport to San Diego was made possible by Turtles Fly Too, a non-profit organization that coordinates and facilitates the use of general aviation to transport endan-

Dear Abby: I have been married to my high school sweetheart for 30 years. Recently, she shared details of two infidelities that she had with other men. The first was with an individual on the staff of our church who held himself out to be my friend. My wife says it was an unprovoked attack, where he forced himself upon her. But when I asked why she didn't resist or fight him off, she said she didn't know and that maybe, deep down, she wanted it to happen. The second was someone she met at a bar and had developed a relationship with. When I was away on business trips, she stayed with him overnight on four occasions. She tells me these things happened more than 20 years ago and she's been faithful since, but to put it bluntly, I am devastated and unconvinced that that's the entire story. I believed my wife to be faithful during our marriage. I guess I was naive because, over the years, she was jealous and accused me of something nefarious if I even looked at a woman, although I never strayed. Now I'm doubting everything. Did we live a fictional life? Were we ever truly happy? How can I believe that she's been faithful since? The fact of the matter is I DON'T BELIEVE HER. I still love her, but every time I look at her, I think about what she told me, and I'm having a hard time coping with this information. I don't think I will ever get over this. What should I do?

The Chamber Minute: Promoting education

Another school year is moving forward. As we emerge from the COVID times, promoting education has been a challenge for teachers, parents and children. Can you imagine having to face all those needed changes at school, in the past couple years, to simply be able to learn? Kids are resilient. One rainy Saturday afternoon my wife was standing in line at a local grocery store with three little, blonde

haired, blue lipped girls behind her. They were very concerned about how much their groceries were going to cost. They had two packs of hot dogs and a half gallon of chocolate mint ice cream. They continued to ask the checker how much this would be. He said, “Girls, I believe you’ll get eighteen cents back.” My wife asked, “Girls, are you having a party?” “Nope”, replied the oldest. “Our mom’s been sick so we

decided to make her supper. We’ll have hot dogs and ice cream.” They had spent the afternoon washing windows and picking up cans to pay for their dinner. Despite what you read or hear, there is nothing wrong with the basic fiber of today’s kids. It’s our responsibility to help that spirit grow and blossom. We do that by providing them guidance. They face many more pathways

in life than we did and we need to help them understand where each path leads. We can spur our children’s growth by providing an example, an example of service. When we volunteer in whatever capacity we chose to serve, it shows them that caring for others is important, simply because it’s the right thing to do. Also we can love them. As they grow up they then will return that love to their families and community.

We are blessed to live in this place at this time. We all have different talents which, when used, make this an even better place. I invite you to join your friends and neighbors at the Chamber working the many opportunities that will continue to make this the best place to live and grow a future. Southern Alaska’s national forests key to meeting climate, conservation goals, OSU study shows By Steve Lundeberg Guest Article

Analyses of U.S. national forests led by Oregon State University scientists shows that increased protections for two Alaskan forests is a key to meeting climate and biodiversity goals. In a paper published in AGU Advances, OSU College of Forestry researchers make the case that greater conservation efforts in the Tongass and Chugach national forests in southern Alaska are crucial because of their landscape integrity, high carbon stocks and wildlife habitat extent. “More thoroughly safeguarding those forests from industrial development would contribute significantly to climate change mitigation and species adaptation in the face of the severe ecological disruption that’s expected to occur over the next few decades as the climate rapidly gets warmer,” said Oregon State’s Bev Law, who coled the study. At 16.7 million acres, the Tongass is America’s largest national forest. The Chugach is the second-largest at just under 7 million acres. Not only are they the biggest national forests, they are the most intact, Law said, and provide habitat for iconic, keystone species such as the bald eagle, brown bear and gray wolf. “Those forests are also cool and wet, with carbon stocks that are only minimally affected by wildfire, stocks that are likely to increase as the climate changes,” she said. “Protecting the Tongass and Chugach is a high priority if we want to have a chance to attain

global goals relating to climate and diversity of species.” Law and collaborators in the College of Forestry teamed up with researchers at Southern Oregon University, the Woodwell Climate Research Center and EcoSpatial Services L.L.C. to look at 152 national forests and compare them in terms of carbon density and accumulation, total biomass carbon stocks, habitat for eagles, bears and wolves, and landscape integrity – defined as degree of modification by humans. The authors report that almost 31% of all high-landscape-integrity area found in national forests – areas with minimal or no human modification – is in the Tongass and Chugach, at 25.3% and 5.6%, respectively. Those forests also combine to account for nearly half of all bald eagle habitat available in national forests, 37% of brown bear habitat and 18% of gray wolf habitat – no other location has more than 4% of the total wolf habitat found in the U.S. inventory of national forests. All three species were once widespread and abundant across much of North America. “Forests play an incredibly important part in trying to mitigate climate change and support biodiversity,” Law said. “For six decades, ecosystems on land have annually been removing roughly 30% of all the carbon dioxide humans have been putting into the atmosphere, and forests do most of that work. But intact forests with high carbon density and high biodiversity are disappearing at a

frightening pace, lost to agriculture, logging and other industries, and development.” In addition to sequestering carbon and providing wildlife habitat, intact forests provide a range of ecosystem services, including helping to keep water clean, the authors note. And in the quest to establish nature-based climate solutions, public lands have outsized importance because they are more likely than private lands to afford more stable carbon storage. Still, at present, federal forest lands are caught up in a numbers game, and conservation has some ground to make up on the scoreboard, Law said. “National forests account for 76% of all federal forest land, but logging and other industrial activities are allowed throughout most of that, with only about 19% classified as reserved in one way or another from timber production,” she said. “That means there is a substantial gap between current preservation and the preservation targets for protecting biodiversity and carbon stocks.” Ramping up protection in the Alaskan forests offers a big opportunity for closing that gap, the authors point out. Right now, 35% of the Tongass is protected at the two highest levels as categorized by the U.S. Geological Survey and the International Union for Conservation of Nature, and 57.6% of the Chugach. “Those two forests have historically been wetter and cooler than most national forests, and over the next 100 years they are projected to have much larger increases in precipita-
