New mural adorns Books by the Bay BY BREE LAUGHLIN The World
Drivers heading south through North Bend are being treated to a new art display on the Books by the Bay building. Books by the Bay owner Harold Midyette said he is happy to see the mural come to fruition. He teamed up with Patrick Erm of Artworks Unlimited to paint the captivating art on the building. They also collaborated with local artist Don
McMichael to produce the mural, which is based off of McMichael’s piece “Whale Hugger.” “We made slight modifications. In the original “Whale Hugger” poster the little girl is hugging a whale. In our modification, the little girl is reading a book to the whale. And we added a little boy on there because I have two kids,”

A deceased newborn orca that washed ashore on a beach in Brookings six years ago is now contributing to marine education through a local exhibit at the Charleston Marine Life Center. November offers 2 planets—Jupiter and Uranus—at opposition which is the best observing opportunity since the Earth lies between the planet and the Sun. In fact, both will be at their brightest for the year since they also reach closest approach to Earth. In late autumn, the Sun’s altitude continues to lower in the sky as the Sun starts the month in Libra and enters Scorpio on November 23 at 6:44 am. However, since 1930, the IAU constellation boundaries now place the Sun in a second constellation in November, namely Ophiuchus (The Serpent Bearer). So, the Sun leaves Scorpio and enters Ophiuchus on 29 November at 7:17 pm. Daylight shortens from 10:16 (10.711 hours) on November 1 to 9:14 (9.939 hours) on November 30 so we gain 1 hour and 2 minutes of nighttime by the end of the month. The Moon enters last quarter on November 5 at 1:37 a.m. in
Cancer. Lunar apogee (furthest from Earth) follows on November 6 at 1:52 p.m. and takes the Moon to 404,530 km away from Earth— around 20,130 km closer than average—subtending an angle of 29.5 arcminutes. The new moon appears on November 13 at 1:27 a.m. in Libra beginning a new synodic (Lunar) month. The first quarter of the new cycle shows up on November 20 at 2:50 a.m. in Aquarius. Lunar perigee (closest to Earth) on November 21 at 1:09 p.m. finds the Moon some 369,854 km away from Earth— around 14,546 km closer than average—subtending an angle of 32.3 arcminutes. Late in the month, the full Beaver Moon makes an appearance on November 27 at 1:16 a.m. in Taurus. For the inner planets, Mercury passes through aphelion—furthest from the Sun—on November 6 at 9:46 a.m. so it is a daytime object in November which rules it out for observing. Venus moves from Leo into Virgo early in the month and remains eas-
ily visible as a morning object hovering around -4.2 mag. Venus reaches perihelion—closest to the Sun—on November 28 at 4:37 a.m. in Virgo. For the superior planets: Mars, like Mercury, is a daytime object following the Sun. It will be completely hidden behind the Sun when it reaches orbital conjunction on November 17 at 9:42 p.m. Jupiter is the highlight of the November sky, though, as it reaches closest approach to Earth on November 1 at 1:02 p.m. some 596 million km (33 light minutes) away making it -2.9 mag. It reaches opposition on November 2 at 9:02 p.m. in Aries. Since it is at opposition, it will be visible all night long for the entire month. Saturn, at 0.8 mag, is best observed in the evening in Aquarius. It rises to 30o and will reverse its retrograde orbit on November 3 at 10:30 p.m. It will reach eastern quadrature on November 23 at 1:47 a.m. when the angle between the Sun, Earth and Saturn is exactly 90o . Uranus also has its closest approach with
Earth at 2,787 million km (155 light minutes) on November 13 at 3:45 a.m. and reaches opposition on the same day at 9:21 a.m. so offers good visibility all night in Aries. At 5.6 mag it may be visible to the naked-eye but binoculars would help. Neptune at 7.8 mag will require a telescope or binoculars and will reach 40o above the horizon as it sweeps across the south in the evening hours. For 2-body conjunctions (< 5o apart) between solar system objects, Venus stands out. It is occulted—blocked from view—by the Moon when it is below the horizon at Coos Bay and North Bend on November 9. However, when Venus rises on the same day, it will be in conjunction with the waning crescent Moon at 3:37 a.m. Meteor showers in November are restricted to the Taurids, Leonids and the tail end of the Orionids reported in last month’s article. After astronomical twilight ends, around 6:30 p.m., it could be visible with the naked-eye in Hercules (Hercules). One could argue that the November constellations take on a distinctly watery theme as we have views of Cetus (The Sea Monster), Pisces (The Fishes), Aquarius (The Water Bearer), Delphinus (The Dolphin) and Eridanus (The River). Even Capricornus (The Sea Goat) and Piscis Austrinus (The Southern Fish) skim over the horizon for a few hours in the early evening and Hydra (The Female Water Snake) rises after midnight. Also visible in the sky will be Camelopardalis (The Giraffe), Pegasus (The Winged Horse), Andromeda (The Chained Maiden), Perseus (The Hero) and Lacerta (The Lizard), whilst along the Ecliptic we can spot Cancer (The Crab), Gemini (The Twins) and Taurus (The Bull) along with our circumpolar regulars Cassiopeia (The Seated Queen), Draco (The Dragon), Ursa Minor (The Little Bear), Ursa Major (The Great Bear) and Cepheus (The King).

These meteors peak around November 6 and Tau o-1 rises around 6 p.m. and sets about 12 hours later so the meteors are viewable all night but optimal due south at 55o altitude after midnight. The Northern Taurids, radiant from near M45 (The Pleiades), peak around November 13. The new Moon appearing earlier on the same day will provide dark skies and excellent viewing. Again M45 rises late afternoon and will be visible after sunset for 10+ hours so check out these shooting stars around midnight in the south at almost 70o altitude. The parent comet is 2P/Encke, co-discovered by M´echain and Messier in 1786, and should generate 5–10 meteors per hour when they are both active. The Leonids, radiant from Leo (The Lion), peak in the early hours of November 18. Conditions are favorable as the close star Algieba rises at 11:30 p.m. the night before and the Moon has set by then. The shower may provide 10–15 events per hour over the next six hours. Best after midnight as they rise from 10o to 60o altitude as they move from east to south. Obituaries
Diane Sue Irvin an accomplished artist and created many works of art and writing as a legacy. Diane was a very loving and caring person. She loved all animals and especially her beloved cats. Diane moved back to the family home and owned and edited a local entertainment magazine on the Southern Oregon Coast called “The Whole Shebang” She later cared for her mother and father. Her father, Hugh preceded her in death in 1998 and then she cared for her mother until her passing in 2021. Diane had close friends who regularly visited her in Coos Bay, for which the family is eternally grateful. Diane is survived by her only brother, Roger (Tammy) Irvin of Grand Junction, Colorado; niece, Taryn Irvin of Grand Junction; aunt, Marian Gazeley of Cor-

Gayle Patricia Thompson June 26, 1941 – October 27, 2023
Gayle realized the fullness of grace when she went home to be with her Savior, surrounded by her children, October 27, 2023, at the age of 82. Her life was full and rich, having loved many and been loved by many. She treasured life and people and never knew a stranger. Her family was her passion and that extended to her many friends. Fiercely independent, Gayle had a ready hug, big smile, listening ear, easy laugh and a sassy, mischievous spirit. Born and raised in San Francisco, she also lived in North Hollywood and Newhall, California and eventually settled in Bandon, Oregon which she called home for the last 48 years. Gayle was always active and worked many jobs; a secretary for an auto body shop, caregiver, an aide at Blanco School and Bandon's SDA School and 24 years at Langlois Market. Her big personality, fun bantering and sense of humor was an asset, a bright spot in each of her work places. Her life took a dramatic turn when her sister, Sheila told her about Jesus and she
accepted the grace and mercy offered her by her Savior in 1972. Gayle was part of Grace Community Church while living in California and Langlois Community church while living in Bandon. Gayle retired in 2021 to be able to spend more time with her many grandchildren, great grandchildren and friends. Sporting events, movies, family gatherings at her home around her pool, music, one on one conversations and eating out with friends and family were her joy. Gayle was one of a kind. Her unwavering faith, love and kindness touched many lives and she will be greatly missed. She passed away March 5, 2021 in Coos Bay. Dorothy was raised in Coos Bay, graduating from Marshfield, class of 1945. She married Hugh Irvin December 27, 1947 and together, they owned and operated Irvin Jewelers in Coos
Bay until retiring in 1986. Dorothy was a member of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, past president of PEO. She enjoyed traveling, camping and painting. She was a lifetime resident of Coos Bay and dearly loved spending time with her family. Dorothy is survived by her son and daughter in law, Roger (Tammy) Irvin of Grand Junction, Colorado; granddaughter, Taryn Irvin of Grand Junction, Colorado; sister, Marian Gazeley of Corvallis; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh in 1998 and her brother, John Kruse. Memorial contributions in

Ramon “Ray” Brongil February 6, 1954 – October 24, 2023
Ramon “Ray” Brongil was born February 6, 1954 in Tacoma Washington to John and Pauline Wertz Brongil. The dimpled blue eyed boy soon displayed an affinity for sports. He set records starting in Junior High in shot put and went on to wrestling and football. He loved music and played percussion. After graduation in 1972 from Lincoln High School in Tacoma, he attended Whitman College on a football scholarship. From there his desire for adventures took him to Southern California where he worked construction to gain residence status in California and then enrolled at California State University Chico to study cultural anthropology. During his stay in southern California he helped with handling the elephants, lions and chimpanzees used for various appearances in the movie industry. Realizing that in order to live, you need money, he left the college scene and started his career with the US Postal Service. During his early years of his career he enjoyed camping and fishing in the Washington rain forest and rendezvousing with the mountain men enthusiasts. He had numerous stories about the encampments. In 1988 he married his best friend, Jennifer and along with Jennifer he gained a daughter, Netty. He met Jennifer while working for the Postal Service and they quickly became an adventurous family. His competitive spirit served him well as he
attained the position of Postmaster of Santa Fe, New Mexico after serving in various offices throughout the west. His love of the mountain man era made Santa Fe his ultimate goal for its history and he took advantage of learning about the area while living there. In 1993, after a reorganization, he chose to leave government service and start his own company. He and Jennifer relocated back to the northwest, choosing to settle in Bandon, Oregon and thus began RayJen Coffee Company. He had a lifelong love of cooking so he opened coffee shops in Bandon and Crescent City, California. The coffee business allowed Ray and Jen to travel to other countries and tour coffee farms. Ray served as a judge for the Specialty Coffee Industry in various competitions. The coffee community is close and he formed many friendships with producers, importers, roasters and the end consumers. After a stroke he retired from the coffee business and daughter, Netty bought the business and continues the family tradition of roasting fine coffee. His love of cooking extended to the neighborhood as he would make culinary gifts at Christmas time to pass out to the neighbors. His family meals around the table were legendary at holiday time and birthdays. We always said the dining room table was the best

In retirement he found a new interest in Ham radio and earned his general license with call sign KK7RAY. His tenure with the Coos County radio club was short but again, great friendships were made. The family would like to thank Pacific Home Health and Hospice and United Homecare Services for their care and friendship over the last few months. We would also like to thank the Bandon Rural Fire Department for their help after a fall and the numerous EMT staff that answered our calls for assistance. He is survived by his wife, Jennifer; daughter, Netty Taylor (Rob Taylor); grandson, Havoc Taylor (Destiny Smith); great granddaughter, Layla Ramona Taylor; and his favorite pet rabbit, Snuffy. In addition to immediate family Ray is survived by a sister; brother; brother-in-law; 3 sistersin-law; and numerous nieces and nephews.

learn about orcas, so it is special to be able to give visitors to the Marine Life Center an up close view of the skeleton, she said. The orca exhibit now adds to the impressive collection of exhibits at the Charleston Marine Life Center. The center is part museum, part aquarium, and is open to the public Wednesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Children and students are free, adults are $5 and senior entry is $4. It is located at 63466 Boat Basin Rd in Charleston. When the CMLC is not open to the public, it is utilized for school groups and other educational activities. “For locals who come in, they are getting to know their own backyard, in essence,” Marine Life Center director Mace said. “I think we have a lot more diversity of marine life here than most people realize,” she said. Exhibits at the marine life center include tanks that hold live sea creatures, fish and other marine life that have been preserved, as well as sea turtle and marine mammal skeletons. There are also many interactive exhibits and views of the Charleston Marina and the bay. It is illegal to collect marine mammal bones without a permit. The new infant orca exhibit adds to the impressive collection of exhibits at the Charleston Marine Life Center.
The two marine mammals are now “swimming” together and greeting visitors as they enter through the doors of the Charleston Marine Life Center. The CMLC is the public outreach center of the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology, the University of Oregon’s marine biology research and teaching field station. Shortly after the infant orca was found, scientists performed a necropsy to find out how it died. They found that the newborn orca had air in its lungs, but it did not have any milk in its stomach. They hypothesize that the orca got separated from its mother shortly after birth, and that it was about two days old when it died. After the necropsy, scientists decided to preserve the skeleton so others could learn more about the difference between adult and baby orca skeletons. It took a team of marine biologists and community and student volunteers about 5-years to complete the process of decomposing and then piecing together the whale skeleton for the exhibit.“It is not common to have a baby orca skeleton – and baby skeletons are different from adult skeletons – so this was a very important opportunity to learn about what newborn whale skeletons look like,” said Trish Mace, the director of the
Charleston Marine Life Center. It was a timeconsuming process, not only because orca skeletons contain many bones, but also because infant whale skeletons aren’t fully formed, Mace said. There was no simple blueprint to follow. Nancy Treneman, a research associate and instructor at OIMB, took the lead in recreating the skeleton. The infant cetacean was still in the process of developing its bones so many were still cartilage and had not yet ossified, she said. She and her team used epoxies and acrylics to fill in the blank spaces that were cartilage. Also, because the infant whale bones were so small compared to an adult, it took some creativity to fuse the delicate pieces together and support the skeleton. In some ways it was a figure-it-out as you go process, Treneman said. But the meticulous team took their time to do it as accurately as possible. While the death of an infant whale isn’t something anyone wants to see, the silver lining is that many have already learned and will continue to learn from it. “Orcas, it seems, are everybody's favorite marine mammals. They are romanticized in some ways. But they're also a top apex predator in the ocean. They have no natural predators. They are really intelligent and they’re social,” Treneman said. As a person who spent just shy of a decade in the military, you tend to pick up some funny tidbits here and there. As I think of this month’s article, Murphy’s Laws of Combat come to mind. While funny, there is wisdom in these rules such as “Never share a foxhole with anyone braver than you are” and “Friendly fire isn’t friendly.” But one particular rule sticks out in my mind as I have found it to be true over and again which is “no plan survives first contact.” Now, you may be asking yourself, what this has to do with law enforcement. The bottom line is that we often make plans which often fall apart as soon as we begin, or during implementation. We have seen this at the Coos County Sheriff’s Office. As we started out the new year, the sheriff and administrative staff at the Coos County Sheriff’s Office had, and continue to have every intent to fully open the Coos County Jail. As I have discussed in previous articles, our hiring has matched our attrition rate. It really sometimes feels as if we take one step forward then one step back…. still going nowhere. Many of you have expressed frustration with this. I understand your frustration and, in fact, share your frustrations in a lot of respects. I began my career in Coos County 16 years ago and there are times when I look back and remember when adults were housed and regularly held for a period of time at the jail. It was the good ol’ days. However, it feels that those days are gone. In some respects, they are. Certain laws such as Senate Bill 48 now determine who is held and who is
released from our jail. The control is not in the hands of the sheriff, or anyone else at the Coos County Sheriff’s Office, but is now in the hands of staff with Oregon State Courts. That said, there is a plan, we wanted to implement this plan sooner, but sadly, it did not survive first contact. But being the tenacious boogers we are, we set about to alter and correct it so your Sheriff’s Office can provide the service we want to provide. There are several aspects of this plan I will discuss, budgeting, bed levels at the jail, limitations and what we want the end state to be. Since January 1, we have hired eight people at the Coos County Sheriff’s Office to various positions within the office. We have several more individuals who are in various stages of hiring. This process is arduous. Necessarily, while we certainly need to get people hired, due to the line of work we are in, there is a certain amount of pickiness as we go through this process. With the information deputies have access to, we must ensure they are morally fit and meet the legal requirements for employment as set by the State of Oregon. We all have a past, but sometimes that past precludes folks from being able to participate in certain jobs. To put this into perspective, while we have hired eight this year, we have 43 backgrounds which have either been processed, or are being processed. That said, Sheriff Fabrizio has set a goal for December. By December, our plan is to have hired all the individuals needed to open our jail to 98 beds. That said, there still may be some delays, we have to train these folks, but we have to hire them first. Once we have the jail open to 98 beds, it will increase
our capability to hold individuals in custody for the crimes they are alleged to have committed. Still, this is not a smoking gun for holding people in custody. While 98 beds sounds like it is a lot, it is the level the jail had been at for several years before we experienced COVID and the hiring problems we now face. This just brings us back to status quo. Currently, we are unable to add any more beds without an additional funding source. We are seeking grants to increase our capability at the Coos County Jail. Years ago, Coos County enjoyed a juvenile holding facility which equates to an additional pod. This facility was on the ground floor of the jail. We are actively looking for grants which will allow the Sheriff’s Office to turn that facility into a booking/receiving area. Our current booking area would transition to a medical holding facility for folks who are needing to be watched for withdrawal symptoms or other medical issues which could be addressed in the jail. While this would not change our bed count, it would exponentially increase our capability. So, as of now, that is the plan following first contact. These are thoughts, ideas, goals which the Coos County Sheriff’s Office is working to implement moving forward. We have some near term and long-term goals as you can see. But these goals all have one thing in mind, to increase the safety and quality of life of our homes and communities. “Hooray for Hollywood, that screwy ballyhooey Hollywood,” the old song goes. And nothing screams “Hollywood!” louder than that famous white sign on Mount Lee towering over Beachwood Canyon. After all, it literally spells it out for you. Believe it or not, it’s been there exactly 100 years now. However, when it went up in 1923, it originally said: “Hollywoodland” (and utilized 4,000 bulbs to light up “Holly,” “Wood,” and “Land” one at a time). But it wasn’t celebrating the new motion picture industry; it actually plugged the even newer Hollywoodland housing development with the same name located below it. And it wasn’t cheap, either: The whole shebang cost a cool $21,000 (about $380,000 today) and was intended to last only 18 months. The development came and went, but the sign still endures. The lights were lost in 1933 (too expensive), and the name was trimmed in 1949 (too long). The original wood deteriorated to the point that it came within a whisker of being demolished. It was replaced with metal, and when that wore out, an updated version with larger letters was unveiled in 1978. (With financial support coming from an eclectic group of celebrities that included rocker Alice Cooper, crooner Andy Williams, Playboy founder Hugh Hefner, cowboy singer Gene Autry, and Les Kelley, creator of the auto trade’s legendary “Kelley Blue Book.”) It’s been quite a story. But one part of the famous sign’s past is often left out of the tale. Because a movie starlet once chose the landmark for her final exit. Poor Peg Entwistle. Born in Britain in 1908, her childhood was unhappy with her parents divorcing and her actor dad taking her to America. Fairhaired and blue-eyed, she followed in her father’s footsteps and made it to the Broadway stage by age 17, where she met with modest success. (Bette Davis later said Entwistle inspired her to become an actress.) But there were tears along the way. Her father was killed by a hit-and-run driver in 1922. In 1927, she married the decade-older Robert Keith, only to divorce him two years later for, among other things, not telling her he’d been married before and had a 6-year-old son. (Who grew up to become movie and TV star Brian Keith.)
Then, in 1932, in the depths of the Great Depression, she was swindled out of her promised payout when the plug was pulled on a big Broadway show. Fed up, she headed west to give Hollywood a try. But Tinsel Town greeted her with a less than warm welcome. She appeared for two weeks in a play that summer opposite a young Humphrey Bogart. Despite the good reviews, film work was slow in coming. She finally landed a small part in a big-budget RKO release called “Thirteen Women.” But she didn’t live to see it on the silver screen. On September 18, the now 24-yearold Entwistle told the uncle she had been staying with she was going to a drugstore and then to visit some friends. She never came home. Two days later, a woman hiking below the Hollywood sign came upon a woman’s shoe. Then a jacket. And then a purse. A short note inside explained everything. “I am afraid, I am a coward. I am sorry for everything. If I had done this a long time ago, it would have saved a lot of pain. P.E.” Her body was found in a nearby ravine. She had climbed up a workman’s ladder and had jumped from the top of the letter H. Entwistle’s death was national news. But 1932 was a presidential election year, and that, coupled with the severe economic crisis, pushed it off the front page in short order. It didn’t take long for Peg Entwistle, her brief career, and her heartbreaking short life, to be forgotten. Why select such a prominent place for her finale? We’ll never know; she took the answer with her to the grave. It is strange to think now, 91 years later, that a venue associated with so much glittering fame was briefly connected to a tragedy. But it was. Peg Entwistle is as much a part of the legendary sign’s legacy as its lost phrase “land” and the lights that once flashed to draw the attention of so many aspiring actors and actresses down below. While looking through my collection of history books and pamphlets, I came across a 32-page booklet, titled "Holy Trinity Catholic Church 100 Years as a Parish," published by church members in 1983. This year marks the 140th anniversary of the local church. Although space prohibits me from sharing their story in its entirety, it is important to note that the first Catholic church (first photo) on the south coast was built in Bandon in 1891, primarily because Bandon was centrally located. "Historical records indicate that the building of the Bandon Church was financed primarily from donations made by members of the parish," with documents signed by John Lewis, Edward Fahy, John Hamblock and Michael Kennedy. An item of special interest, which I have followed in the pages of the Bandon Recorder and the Western World, occurred in the 1920s when the church made the news, but not for religious reasons. "Interestingly, the City of Bandon decided to straighten the street that goes up the hill toward the Catholic Church. The City asked the church for an easement across some of the church property for a street right-of-way, but the request was refused. The City then appealed to the courts requesting that a piece of church property be condemned so that it could be utilized for city use. The courts, however, declined to make such a ruling and as a result, the street follows the same crooked path it did when Bandon was first settled in the late 1800s." During the Bandon Fire of Sept. 26, 1936, the church on the bluff and the two-story rectory burned to the ground. "After the Fire, Mass was said in the homes of parishioners and in the high school gym in east Bandon, which had not burned. "The present church in Bandon (second photo) was built in 1937. The church was 68'x30' and cost approximately $5,000 at the time. With the help of Art Jacobs, the Confessional and many smaller items were added to the church." Father Ervin Vandehey arrived in Bandon in August of 1956 and was the first resident priest since of the fire of 1936. When he first

As I See It: The Catholic Church came to town he stayed at Table Rock Motel and at the Pat Briggs residence while Pat and her family were on vacation. In 1957 the rectory was completed. "An addition to the church was completed in 1960 mainly through the efforts of the parishioners including Don and Gerry Fraser, Homer Ackerman, Bill Burgher, Otto Erickson, George McMahon, Francis Stadelman and Fay Lakey. At that time, fund-raising efforts began to help pay for the addition to the church and a new convent. "In September of 1961, four nuns of the Order of St. Francis of Atonement arrived from New York for Catechetical work in the Bandon, Brookings and Coquille areas." The parishioners held an open house on Sept. 24, 1961, for the new convent and to welcome the new nuns, who are pictured with Father Vandehey (third picture) in front of the new convent (a photo that I took for the Western World). Today the congregation is busy fundraising with the hope of building a new church. --------------------------I've heard a lot of conjecture as to who the Oregon Ducks might be playing next football season when they enter the Big Ten conference. They reportedly will play five league games at Autzen Stadium, including Illinois, Maryland, Michigan State, Ohio State and Washington. They will travel to Michigan, Purdue, UCLA and Wisconsin. Only Washington and UCLA will be from the former Pac12 conference, which has been decimated to be the Pac2 (Oregon State and Washington State). In 2025, Oregon will also play USC the other Pac12 school which left to join the Big Ten conference. Stanford, California, Utah, Colorado and the two Arizona schools will become part of the Big 12 Conference. --------------------------When the 25th Anniversary of Bandon Dunes Golf Resort comes around in May, it will offer five 18-hole championship courses, three short courses, two practice ranges, and a putting course, as well as 10 restaurants and 210 rooms across six facilities, ranging from four-bedroom suites in cottages to double- and single-occupancy rooms, according to an item in Global Golf.

* * I learned this week that former long-time Bandon resident Daisy Hill Mallory Turner died Oct. 25 at the age of 94. She and her late husband, Roy Mallory, had three sons, Bruce, Mark and Gary, six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. After Daisy remarried, she and Herb Turner would snowbird each year for 15 years at a resort on the Salton Sea. Among her survivors is her niece Marcia Strader, daughter of Daisy's sister, Durelle Strader. When they lived here, Daisy was active in the First Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School. I also read that Dr. John Flaxel, who was an ophthalmologist with Bay Eye Clinic for many years, died in Portland recently at the age of 87. --------------------------People are reminded to set their clocks back on Sunday, Nov. 5, the start of daylight-saving time. --------------------------I was talking with a local business person this week, and she pointed out that tourist business is taking a big hit with the closure of the Port of Bandon crab docks along with the campground at Bullards Beach State Park. Both are expected to be closed until next spring. My friend explained that people often stay at the campground and shop in our local stores during this time of year, and this coupled with the closure of the crab dock has generated some concern among crabbers, visitors and merchants. --------------------------There has been a lot of back and forth on Facebook this past week expressing concern about the news that the community meals will not be served this year. Colleen Wiesel, co-chairman of Holiday Meals, sent me an update. "Holiday Meals will not be serving Thanksgiving or Christmas meals this year. We will schedule a community meeting sometime after the new year to discuss the meals going for-

retaliation as part of a leadership "coup." The article said, "Darren Barfield, the center's former chief operating officer, resigned from the center on March 24 along with two other top officials, Chief Medical Officer Ann Kellogg and CFO Jennifer Kuehn, according to the suit. The filing portrays their former employer, a nonprofit federally qualified health center that serves low-income people, as a site of dysfunction, discrimination and cross-cutting complaints. "Melissa Cribbins, who is named in the suit and is listed on the center's website as its chief executive officer, said she and the center declined to comment on its allegations. She said she is no longer interim CEO. Darren Barfield was hired on Nov. 18, 2022, according to the suit. It also said that after accepting the job over other opportunities, he learned that board members were planning a 'coup' to remove then-CEO Linda Maxon, claiming they'd discovered financial

Reception to open exhibit at Bandon gallery Art by the Sea Gallery and Studio is hosting a reception for Featured Artist, Christopher Bailey, on Saturday, November 11, from 2-4 pm. Christoper’s watercolor paintings won the People’s Choice Award at Art by the Sea Gallery and Studio in the 2022 Community Show, ‘Color-Bright & Bold.’ Christopher studied graphic design then painted and worked in the printing industry for 35 years in Salt Lake City, Utah. His abstract works are based on organic elements he studied carefully before placing them on vibrant backgrounds. Sadly, Christopher passed away after the show due to complications from skin cancer. The Bailey family will be donating a portion of the proceeds from this current show to cancer research. The Member’s New Show, ‘Black & White,’ will also be on exhibition, as well as their various artworks throughout the gallery. Meet and greet artists and friends while enjoying some wine and refreshments during the reception. The show runs from November 7th to December 3rd. Ministerial candidate, Reverend Patty Williams, will be visiting Unity of Bandon November 11-12. On Saturday, November 11, she will be conducting a class from 10 a.m.-noon, with a Q & A and potluck luncheon to follow. On Sunday, November 12, she will share the Sunday message and meditation at 11 a.m., followed by another Q & A and luncheon. Rev. Patty was ordained by Unity in 2010. She most recently served for six years as the senior minister at Unity of Salem in Salem. She has also served as the associate minister at Unity Minneapolis for three years and at Unity Church of Manhattan in Kansas for two years. She worked for Silent Unity at Unity Village for seven years. She hopes to stay here in Oregon as it has been her chosen home since 2019 when she moved to Portland. Prior to ministerial school she was a licensed
Unity teacher at Unity of Beaverton and served as the spiritual leader at Christ Light Unity in Gresham. She also worked as a marketing director and special events coordinator for The Grotto and event auditor for the Portland Rose Festival. DEAR READERS: Twenty-five years ago tomorrow, I told you about a new, nationwide effort to honor and remember our nation's troops, veterans and families by seeking out and preserving their war correspondence from every conflict in U.S. history. The response was overwhelming. The founder of this initiative, Andy Carroll, just told me that, as of this week, and on this special 25th anniversary, the archive has collected more than 200,000 war-related letters and emails. The nonprofit organization Andy created, the Center for American War Letters (CAWL), based at Chapman University in California, is still seeking correspondence.

Michael Paul Johnson, also known as Mike, or to his kids, “Pop”, was born in Mahnomen, Minnesota, on June 29, 1947. He died on October 22, 2023, at Grande Ronde Hospital with two of his nurse mentees at his side - his daughter, Liz, and his work daughter, April. Mike's family moved from Mahnomen, Minnesota, to Myrtle Point, Oregon, when he was 4 years old, and he spent his growing up years in Myrtle Point, having many adventures with his older brother, Tom. Mike loved wrestling and playing football, and he graduated from Myrtle Point High School in 1965. He attended community college at Southwestern Oregon Community College (SWOCC) for two academic years and transferred to Southern Oregon College (now Southern Oregon University) at the age of 21 to play football and study math and science. Mike then transferred to Portland State University in the fall of 1968 but decided to drop out of school, cash out his tuition money, and drive
with a friend to attend the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City. He met his future wife, Anne Kronsberg, in August of 1968 at the Coos County Fair in Myrtle Point. Mike and Anne married in September of 1970, and they started their family shortly thereafter, having Benjamin “Ben”, Elizabeth “Liz”, and Matthew “Matt”. While his children were young, Mike worked various jobs without a formal career plan. Mike had the idea to return to college and become a nurse, and he placed his name in the lottery for entrance to the SWOCC nursing program. He was selected for the program and started on his journey to becoming a nurse. Mike graduated from nursing school in 1978, and he began his lifelong career as a nurse. He worked in a psychiatric unit, an emergency department, and an orthopedic surgical office in the North Bend/Coos Bay area from 1977-1989. Mike moved his family to La Grande, Oregon, in 1989 so that his kids could live at home and graduate from a 4-year university, an opportunity
he always wanted to have. He took a job in the operating room at Grande Ronde Hospital where he worked for the last 26 years of his nursing career. He frequently said that the best two decisions he made in life were marrying his wife, Anne, and becoming a nurse. His other proud accomplishment was building a 31-foot aluminum fishing boat from scratch over a ten-year period of time, which he named "Joanna" after his first grandchild. He only caught himself on fire once while building it, and the Joanna has been a great place for family time and many fishing trips. As a husband and dad, Mike would admit he wasn't perfect, but he gave everything to make a comfortable life for Anne and to help his kids succeed in life, work, education, family, fishing, and home improvement projects. As a grandpa, he loved his grandkids more than any other humans in the world. As a nurse, Mike loved teaching, precepting, and mentoring students and any nurse who would
listen. He loved taking care of babies and kids, and he always carried children in his arms back to their families after surgeries because he couldn't stand hearing them cry. Mike fought a short battle with cancer, which he stalled on getting diagnosed because he didn't want to give one of his favorite doctors, Dr. Pat McCarthy, the satisfaction of being right. He was stubborn to the end, but that's why we all loved him so much. During his last week of life, he spent time in Grande Ronde Hospital and was incredibly happy to be back in his second home with old friends and his former work family. Mike's family would like to thank the staff of GRH for all they did in caring for us and for honoring the essence of who Mike was and his wishes. We would also like to thank the staff for listening patiently to Mike instructing them through procedures (that they already knew how to do) and listening to Mike's many stories that came out during his stay about his nursing career and his time working at GRH.
Mike is survived by his wife, Anne, to whom he was proudly married for 53 years, and his children, Ben (Anne) Johnson of Bellevue, Washington, Liz (Fred) Wolotira of Pendleton, Oregon, and Matt (Kristin) Johnson of La Grande, Oregon. He is also survived by his best friend and older brother, Tom (Sara) Johnson of Eugene, Oregon, and his younger brother, David (Julie) Johnson of Coos Bay, Oregon. Finally, he is survived by his grandchildren: Joanna and Steve Litalien, Jonathan and Olivia Wolotira, Andrew Wolotira and Taylor Wickett, Ella Johnson, Oliver Johnson, and Elliott Johnson. Mike was preceded in death by his parents, James and Queena (Lindeman) Johnson; brother, Oscar Johnson; and his sisters, Betty Scully, Carol Sturgill, Kathy Johnson, and Judy Johnson. Mike didn't want a depressing funeral, so instead we will have a "Remembering Mike" storytelling party with coffee and desserts on Saturday, November 11, 2023, at 1 p.m. at the La Grande National Guard Armory, 404 12th Street,
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Sandy C. Hoefer, 89, of North Bend, will be held on Friday, November 10, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at the North Bend First Presbyterian Church, 2238 Pony Creek Road, with Pastor Eric Lindsey officiating. Sandra “Sandy”
Corrine (Rybin) Hoefer was born on January 16, 1934 in Lead, South Dakota to Marshall Rybin and Susie (Haxby) Rybin. She passed away peacefully on October 21, 2023 in Springfield, Oregon under the care of ElderHealth and Living. In 1944 Sandy and the family, along with her little sister, Marsha, moved to the coastal community of Empire, Oregon. Empire proved to be a place where many lifelong friendships were established and a favorite gathering
over the years was the summertime Empire Reunion. Sandra graduated from Empire Grade School in the 8th grade and then attended North Bend High School and graduated in 1952. Highlights of high school was she was Girl of the Year her senior year. Sandra became a Christian at the Empire Baptist Church and her faith and compassion for others was her benchmark on how she lived her life, however not without her opinions.

Sandra lived an exciting life with many adventures as a woman for her generation. She worked in a logging camp in Coos County as a cook’s assistant, lived independently in Portland, Oregon working for a shipping company, and attended college in Brownsville, Texas and Long Beach, California. Sandra married Andrew G. Hoefer Jr. on March 21, 1964 at the North Bend Presbyterian Church, which is now Unity by the Bay. Sandra worked for the city of North Bend at the North Bend Public Library as a Book Restoration Specialist. She had a love of books and knowledge and always had a title of a book to offer. There are many beloved books in our community that have been repaired and restored by her hands. Sandra is survived by her children, Kristin Hoefer and husband, Jardin Kazaar, and Erik Hoefer and his wife, Janet; grandchildren, Caitlyn (Arron) Atkins and Shane Hoefer; sister, Marsha Burgey (Dan); nieces, Cyndee (Roy) Mason, Danette (Jon) Killinger, Beverly Hoagland and Elizabeth (Paul) Jorgenson; nephews, Lance Burgey, Barry (Amy) Burgey, Mark (Lisa) Hoefer and Brad (Ann) Hoefer. Sandra was preceded in death by her parents, Marshall and Susie Rybin and her husband, Andy Hoefer Jr. on January 12, 2023. courses. The curriculum offers a comprehensive understanding of economic opportunities, current trends, essential competencies, and the tools necessary to thrive in the global economy. It emphasizes economic development within Oregon's diverse landscape, spanning urban and rural areas. Graduates of this rigorous program earn the Oregon Certified Economic Developer Certification, marking their proficiency in the principles and practices of Oregon's economic development. Mr. Milliron brings an impressive background to this distinction. As an International City/County Management Association credentialed manager (ICMA-CM), he boasts over 15 years in local government roles. His extensive credentials include
the Certified Economic Developer (CEcD), Certified Municipal Government Finance Officer (CMFO), and Certified Public Manager (CPM).
