A 1999 Marshfield High School graduate had an unexpected journey unravelling the history of a mysterious place in her new hometown. After a decade of research, Tai Stith recently released her book, ‘Science, Submarines & Secrets: The Incredible Early Years of the Albany Research Center.” Stith said she got strange feelings whenever she would pass by a government laboratory along her running route in Albany, OR. She dedicated herself to piece together what actually happened at the Albany Research Center (U.S. Bureau of Mines lab). “When I moved to my first house in Albany it was two blocks from this mysterious complex of buildings,” Stith said. Curry and Coos County residents can help young people pursue their education while also enjoying food and wine pairings during an ‘Uncorking Opportunity’ on Friday, Feb. 23. The ‘Uncorking Opportunity’ is an annual fundraising event put on by the Southwestern Oregon Community College Foundation in collaboration with the Oregon Coast Culinary Institute. Those who attend the event will be treated to a selection of hors d’oeuvres specially paired with Oregon wines provided by well-known wineries from the Rogue, Umpqua and Willamette Valleys. Thanks to sponsor support, one hundred percent of ticket proceeds will go to scholarships for students pursuing degrees and training at Southwestern’s Coos and Curry campuses and the Oregon Coast Culinary Institute. “A lot of different people
Regional members of the Oregon Old Time Fiddlers’ Association will pick up their instruments again from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, for a public jam session at the Bandon IOOF Hall, just east of town along Oregon Highway 42S. Everyone will pick up their instruments, that is, except Linda Sweatt of North Bend, a retired music teacher, who plays piano. Technically, the piano is not part of the Old Time Fiddlers’ tradition, even though it’s a stringed instrument, explained Mapril Combs of Dora, chair of the association’s District 5, which includes musicians from throughout Oregon’s South Coast, from Florence to Brookings. The district also includes a few members from Crescent City, Calif., just across the border from Brookings. Altogether, District 5 includes about 30 families, totaling about 150 individual members. They range in age from 15-80, including the very talented Rachel Eickhoff, a Bandon High School senior who “plays everything,” Combs said. “Instruments played are anything you might have brought on the Oregon Trail,” explained Combs, a member of the organization for the past 40 years. Barbara Scheirman of Coos Bay, who plays the fiddle and guitar, put it another way. She said the Old Time Fiddlers’ talents include all the instruments one can play on your front porch — “and a piano’s hard to haul out on your front porch. We don’t show up with electric guitars!” The Old Time Fiddlers play at a variety of venues in District 5 on a weekly, biweekly or monthly schedule. On Saturday, Jan. 20, the fiddlers jammed at the Odd Fellows Hall in Bandon, where they get together from 1-3 p.m. monthly on the third Saturday. At the last Bandon jam,15 musicians

participated, including six on guitars, three on fiddles, Sweatt on the piano, Bill Winfrey of Coos Bay on the harmonica, two playing banjos, one on an autoharp and one playing mandolin. Most Old Time Fiddlers play from memory. One, who was new to the group, used sheet music in Bandon. “We play by ear,” Combs said,” noting that all the longtime members have memorized the songs. Selections in Bandon included ballads, bluegrass, country, waltzes, polkas and gospel music. The musicians sit in an arc or semi-circle at the front or side of the hall, taking turns leading and/or singing the songs. Some numbers are instrumentals; others have lyrics. Throughout the 90-minute to two-hour jams, the musicians and audience join in singing familiar tunes. Some musicians, like Sweatt, play several instruments. She’s comfortable at the piano, strumming a guitar and/or singing along. “The concept of leading a tune is not grandstanding. One leads and the others play along,” Scheirman said. “Once in a while a musician will ‘perform’ and the others just play along quietly.” Bill Winfrey of Coos Bay said, “We play at assisted living homes. We do that every Tuesday. There’s usually 10 or 12 of us who show up there.” Winfrey joined the Old Time Fiddlers about 10 years ago. He plays several harmonicas — not all at once, of course. His wife, Pat, plays the guitar, ukulele and sings. The harmonica has reeds, not strings, but it qualifies because pi-

Girls making a comeback in chess!
Coach Dr. Nancy Keller was thrilled when she saw the Oregon Girl’s Championship February 4th and ealized she had six dedicated Coos County girls who had been regularly attending local chess tournaments. It had been over a decade since she had talented girls to take to the Girl’s Chess Championships

year was familiarizing themselves with the Girl’s Tournament atmosphere and enjoying the ice cream social. They learned about endurance for a long day, playing at a disadvantage as they had to travel four hours and sleep in a hotel while most of the others were near home.

Coquille Tribe hands-out over $500,000 in grants NORTH BEND – A total of 77 projects are being funded in 2024, thanks to $509,976 in Coquille Indian Tribe Community Funds that were handed-out at a celebration event on Feb. 1. Grant recipients gathered in person at the awards reception at The Mill Casino-Hotel to collect their checks. The Tribe’s grants will help organizations from five southwestern Oregon counties with projects in five categories: health, arts and culture, education, environmen-
tal, public safety, and historic preservation. Along with the checks, the Tribe shared a bit of its culture and history as it celebrates its 35th year since being restored in 1989. An important milestone that is a sign of resilience that follows the previous 35 years of struggle in the face of a termination policy that began in 1954. After sharing that story, one that has led to the current and thriving state of the Coquille Tribe, the crowd was invited
to join in a song whose name translates to the phrase “There Is Plenty.” The song reflects a cycle of blessing, with the Coquille Tribe helping organizations that in turn will help countless community members throughout five counties. The Coquille Indian Tribe established its Community Fund to share the proceeds of The Mill Casino-Hotel with organizations that benefit southwestern Oregon. The fund seeks to strengthen the community by improving op-

Javorsky said the ‘Uncorking Opportunity’ is a great way to socialize with new and old friends while supporting a good cause. “I hope it will be a fun evening for everyone. But most of all, I hope everyone knows that by participating in the event, they are making a difference,” he said. In addition to the food and wine pairings, the fundraiser will also feature both a silent and live auction. Some of the auction adventure items include: tickets to an exclusive winemaker’ dinner, a private OCCI group cooking class, a hot air balloon ride for two, a one-week
stay in Hawaii, as well as a ‘Name Your Own’ scholarship. The ‘Uncorking’ event will take place on Friday, Feb. 23 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Oregon Coast Culinary Institute (1988 Newmark Ave., Coos Bay).

research, Stith said what she found out was more fantastic than she could’ve imagined – “think UFO’s, tunnels, top secret work, and some pretty amazing science.” Stith said her new book ‘Science, Submarines & Secrets,’ reveals a series of events that led to the establishment of the Northwest Electro-development Laboratory, later the U.S. Bureau of Mines Albany Research Center. The book delves into the establishment and early years of the U.S. Bureau of Mines in Albany, Oregon, and the series of events during the period of 1940-1956. According to ‘Science, Submarines & Secrets,’ the fledgling lab had difficulty securing staff due to World War II, and world-renown metal-
lurgist William J. Kroll was hired early on as a consultant after fleeing Nazi occupation. Kroll, who had pioneered a method for producing commercial titanium, worked with his core group of associates to develop malleable zirconium, just as a need arose for the little-known metal. According to the author, this story intertwines with a mission to develop the world’s first nuclear submarine, the USS Nautilus, under the cover of extreme secrecy. “The history has been a little bit forgotten or not talked about because it involves classified elements that people are very hesitant to discuss,” Stith said. “I feel like my job is to put the pieces back together,” she said. The author plans to
write a second book where the first one leaves off. The Coos Bay native who now works as a graphic designer said she is an unlikely candidate for the job. But it’s something that has come together each step along the way, with the help of documentation and referrals from people who have been associated with the lab. Stith is excited to share her research and accomplishments with her hometown community. John Michael "Mike" Flynn ,Jr.
Donna Darlene Bosselman
Former Coquille School District teacher Mike Flynn passed away peacefully with family by his side on December 23, 2023. He was born in Chicago, Illinois on December 13, 1941 to John and Mary Flynn. He graduated from St. Joseph High School in 1959 and in June 1964 he received a B.S. degree in Biology from John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1977 he earned a M.S. in Science from California State University Northridge. After his retirement in 1999, he and his wife Kathy moved to Bothell, WA. He joined the Northshore
Donna Darlene Bosselman, nee Beebe, died in Scottsdale, AZ on February 1, 2024. A memorial service will be held for Donna in Coos Bay later in the year. Arrangements are pending with the Coos Bay Chapel. Donna was born and raised in Salem, Oregon. She graduated from Salem High School in 1950. In 1954 she graduated from Willamette University with a degree in Art History. She then attended the University of Colorado to complete her teaching qualifications in Elementary Education. After completing her education Donna moved to the Coos Bay area where she met her husband of 55 years, Herb. During her teaching career she taught at Charleston

Lyle Tripp
May 21, 1929 – January 28, 2024
Lyle Albertus Tripp, 94, of Coos Bay, Oregon passed away on January 28, 2024. Lyle was born on May 21, 1929 to Loren and Emma Tripp in Mabel, Minnesota. He was the middle child of 7 children, “the pickle in the middle”, he had three older brothers, all pre-deceased, Arden Tripp, Mervin Tripp, Norris Tripp and his three surviving sister’s Phyllis (Arlyn) Vigeland, Allene (Glen) Buxenguard, and Janice (Wordean) Welper. Lyle was the first boy in his family to graduate from Mabel-Canton High School (Go Cougs!). Dad was a Yell Leader for his Alma Mater. After high school, he headed west, first to California and then ultimately making it to Alaska, where he began his career in construction. While in Fairbanks he was drafted into the Army during the Korean war. He served his country as a Private 1st Class until his honorable discharge. He returned to Alaska and worked in construction as a heavy equipment mechanic. He joined the 302 Operating Engineers Union, a proud member for over 55 years. He was a very talented, mechanically minded man who could just about repair and build anything that came his way. Just ask Lyle and he could fix it or build it. Lyle married JoAnne Harrop and they started their family in Fairbanks.
During the mid-sixties he moved his family down to Seattle. He worked for several years for Continental Baking Co, the home of Wonder Bread. However, his career path for better pay and the work he really liked to do took him back up to Fairbanks. He worked on the Alaska Pipeline project from 1969 – 1972. In 1976 he moved his family to Ferndale, Wa. He purchased a 20-acre hobby farm and built a new home. When the pipeline was completed, he seasonally worked for Fairbanks Sand and Gravel and eventually became the Superintendent until the company was sold. He returned to Prudhoe Bay working on generator maintenance for all the pump stations on the north side of Atigun Pass until retiring. He was instrumental in creating electrical charged barriers around the garbage dumps at the stations to keep the bears and other wild creatures out of the garbage. He saved many polar bears from an early demise. Our Dad was a good storyteller with many stories about his time on the North Slope! After retiring, he moved to Coos Bay, Oregon. Lyle was intent on becoming a Snowbird and bought an RV. He traveled back and forth from Oregon to Arizona for several years with his second wife

Noreen Lundy. He was well known at the Coos Bay Eagles where he was a lifetime member, joining the organization in his twenties in Fairbanks. He was also a member of the VFW as a lifetime member. Lyle leaves behind his four children, Theresa Tripp of Bellingham, Wa., Todd (Susan)Tripp of Coos Bay, Or., Robert Tripp (pre-deceased), Kristen Tripp of Lynden, Wa. He also leaves behind his four beloved grandchildren Zachary Tripp, Kaila Tripp, Lauren Valenti, Lauren Tripp and many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly. Lyle asked that any donations made on his behalf go to the Coos Bay Chapter of the Eagles Aerie 538, 568 S. 2nd St., Coos Bay, OR 97420 At this time no memorial service is planned; however, his son may do a small memorial for him this summer at the Coos Bay Eagles Club.

Diane Louise Burton passed away on January 20, 2024. She was born in 1950 to Dudley and Mary Burton/Browning (Randles) in Portland, Oregon. She was the oldest of four and her childhood was spent in Oregon with memorable times with family and friends. After graduating from Holy Child Academy, she continued her education at Portland State University before moving to Santa Barbara, California in her early twenties. Diane’s good looks shined with her style and flair. She had a sweet and friendly personality which assured she always had a large circle of friends. She relished the California lifestyle and was active with windsurfing, competitive racquetball, and softball. Diane worked in bookkeeping and accounting. She was a perfectionist with great organization skills, always performing with excellence at whatever she did. Diane made sure to visit family in Oregon at least once a year, usually at Christmas, which would make it a special time for family. Diane returned to Oregon, first living with her mom and stepfather in Cannon Beach for a period. She soon moved to Portland where she worked for Harsh Property Management and Shearson Brokerage - which is where she met Jim Verger. Jim and Diane married on November 22, 1986. They then moved to Coos Bay where

Jim joined the family business Verger Chrysler Dodge Jeep. Diane utilized her skill set in many ways during her years in Coos Bay. She kept books for Jim at Bargain Corner for many years. Diane enjoyed entertaining a great deal and for twenty years hosted members of the Coast Guard monthly during their week-ends here. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed sharing her culinary skill …especially making cookies! She made the best! Diane was very active in her community. She was a member and Past President of Soroptimist International of the Coos Bay Area; of Chapter AS of PEO; her book club; more than one bridge group; and Garden Club. She looked forward to the monthly luncheons celebrating friend’s birthdays. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles; word games of all kinds, and was a news junkie!! Diane’s love of clothes continued throughout her life. She always had the perfect outfit for any and all occasions. Diane was a very thoughtful, caring person…every holiday, birthday, and anniversary brought a card in the mail from Diane to those she loved. Get Well cards, Thinking of You cards were always being sent as well. She was known for her beautiful, thoughtful thank you notes. Diane loved her fur-family members; her dog Buddy brought her great joy as did her cats Itty and Wilson.
Diane had a keen eye for decorating and art. She was Jim’s sounding board, his confidante, and they shared decades of friendship. She is survived by her husband, Jim; her brother, David Burton (Sylvia); sister, Denise Burton and stepmother, Dolores Burton. Diane was a beloved sisterin-law and aunt as well, truly loved by the entire Verger family. Even as her health failed, her spirit and zest for life continued to be strong. She will be deeply missed. Diane was preceded in death by both of her parents; her stepfather, Everett Browning and her brother, Damon Burton, as well as her in-laws, Lawton and Joanne Verger. The Coos County Friends of Public Health is hosting this fundraising event, and registration is now open at www.ccfoph. org. It’s a fun way to achieve fitness goals in the New Year. Participants “race” around Coos County, and track their actual exercise activities on the virtual route of 229 miles. Miles can be counted for many types of activities, e.g., walking, biking, running, swimming, pickleball, bowling, and dance. Joining a team with friends, family or colleagues can help with motivation to maintain daily exercise and finish the course. Cost to participate is $25 (plus a $2.50 signup fee), and the proceeds will help Coos County families in need through the Nurses’ Purse fund at Coos Health and Wellness. The first picture I am sharing was taken around 1913 and is of the Emergency Hospital, which was on the east side of Alabama, next to the Racket Store in a twostory building. It would have been north of the old bank building (now known as the Masonic building which houses Spirit of Oregon and the Cobblers Bench). This story is about the sale of the hospital, which appeared in the April 10, 1919, Western World. "Spray Osborn, who for the past year or more has been a patient at the Emergency hospital, left today for Cereal, Alberta, Canada, where he owns a wheat farm. He was accompanied by Miss Ena McKenzie, who will continue to care for him. Miss McKenzie having sold the Emergency hospital which she had conducted here for a number of years." Although I am not sure who bought the hospital, or if anyone did, I did find a large ad in the March 20, 1919, paper which read: "FOR SALE EMERGENCY HOSPITAL, Bandon, fully equipped, seven patient rooms, operating room, kitchen, etc. A Good opening. $500 will take it. Want to sell before April 1. Address: K.E. McKenzie, Bandon, Ore." I am pretty sure Bandon had at least two hospitals in those days, so it appears that if it did sell, it didn't make the news. The second photo was taken in January of 1983 when heavy rains flooded the road to the South Jetty, stranding the vehicle in the photo. Another photo in the Western World pictured CCCOG (Coos County Council of Governments) Director Sandy Diedrich, who lived on the jetty, and was wading across the road. "Waves washed across jetty road and then continued to flow west along jetty road into the fresh water pond behind Mrs. Diedrich's house, causing extensive flooding to a home occupied by her mother. There was over a foot of water in her mother's house, and 23 inches under the Diedrich home, with water pouring into the subfloor and the bathroom." A county commissioner advised the paper that the county would be putting rock on the shoulders of jetty road as a temporary measure to keep the road
from further damage by strong wave action, They also planned to contact Senator Mark O. Hatfield's office in the hopes of getting something done about replacing the old jetty rock on the edge of the river, which was the primary cause of the flooding. I believe that jetty road is now part of the city's road system, after the city assumed responsibility for the South Jetty park some years ago. Extensive rip rap was been placed on the north side of the road, which pretty much addressed the problem. The third picture, taken in June of 1983, features George Barnes, longtime administrator of the Southern Coos General Hospital, receiving a check from Lioness member Betty Dragoo, to be used to buy video tapes for the hospital. For many years, a group of women, known as Pink Ladies, served the hospital in various capacities through the Hospital Auxiliary. -------------------------I've learned that Ruth Gabriel, who taught home economics at the high school back in the 1950s, died recently at the age of 96 in the Yakima, Wash., area where the Gabriels had lived for many years. Among her survivors are her husband, Lloyd "Gabe," 102, who also taught here, and their sons, Kimo K. Gabriel, 63, and Kekoa K. Gabriel, 65, and their families. For those wanting to send Mr. Gabriel a card, his address is 3803 Summitview Ave., Apt. 301, Yakima, Wa., 989022797. -------------------------Just a few days after I was admiring the work that Tom Stadelman has done on the former Dave's TV building on Second Street, I understand he fell 10 feet off a ladder at the site and landed on his back. I heard that he broke a bone in his back, but I don't know the details. Just hoping for a speedy recovery! -------------------------Jeremiah Dodrill, who has served as the extremely competent finance officer for Southern Coos Hospital for three years, resigned effective Feb. 2 to move back east for another position and to be near family. A graduate of Bandon High School and previously the finance director at Salem Health, Jeremiah's knowledge of hospital finances was vast and will be hard to replicate. -------------------------It won't be the same
without him, but longtime District Attorney Paul Frasier told me recently that he will not seek re-election. He (and his wife) feel that 39 years is enough. He should write a book about the cases that he has covered as Coos County DA for nearly four decades. I am sure he has some interesting stories to share. I know that his wish lists includes serious changes (or outright repeal) to BM110 (the decriminalization of drugs) and support from county residents in the primary election for the county's Public Safety Levy, which will allow at least one more and possibly two more, 49-bed jail pods to open and provide funds to hire more assistants for the DA's office. -------------------------At a recent City Council meeting, Planning Director Dana Nichols told us about the Host Compliance software used to track Vacation Rental Dwelling compliance. One of the tools is the 24/7 hotline, which can be used to report a violation by a VRD. The number is 541237-1640. -------------------------As we all know, January has been a pretty wet month. But just how wet? My rain guy recorded 19.69 inches, which in the last 20 years is second only to 2006 when he recorded 20.45 inches. Two years ago the January rainfall was 5 inches and last year it was 9.98. So we were right, it did rain a lot. Here's to Spring! -------------------------The Bandon Police Department posted

recently on Facebook that they continue to take calls regarding concerns of speed and traffic on Seabird. "A lot of the complaints seem to revolve around construction crews in the area. Speed trailers and focused patrols have not resolved the problem. We encourage the public to call and complain with specific vehicle descriptions and the police can aggressively enforce the traffic laws to increase neighborhood safety," said the post. "We also encourage individuals who are working in the area to respect the sanctity of the neighborhood and abide by the traffic laws." This, of course, goes for other parts of the community, including Highway 101, but it's hard to reach those drivers without a red light and a citation book in hand. -------------------------Joan (DeCosta) Goodbrod contacted me recently from her home in Woodland, Wash., after learning of the program on the arson fire that destroyed the Bandon High School building in January of 1974. She was among the Class of 1950 that was the first class to graduate from that school. She is 91. Other members of her class include Gene Schrader, 92, of Sutherlin; Florence Moore Litzenberger, 91, Springfield; and Marie
Fasnacht Cochran, who is 90 and lives on the North Bank Road. Gene's wife, the former Helen Wehner, also attended the school, but several years later, as did I. Don't forget, this Saturday (Feb. 10), Jim Proehl and I will be again presenting the high school fire story at 2 p.m. at the museum. -------------------------A man, suffering from dementia, who had driven away from his home in Portland, and was believed to be in the Bandon area Feb. 3 was located on Highway 42 near the Junction of Highway 242 (Powers highway) after a person observed his vehicle sideswiping a row of mailboxes along the highway. Deputies responded to the area and caught up with him at milepost 52 in Douglas County. He was cared for by deputies, provided with necessities and driven to Eugene to be reunited with family. -------------------------Several hundred people turned out at the Bandon Fisheries Warehouse Saturday to honor Dr. Hank Holmes, who was celebrating 50 years as a doctor, including the last 10 years in Bandon. Although he did not dwell on it and said he would not mention it again, he told the audience that he did not leave Coast Community Health Clinic on his own, but that he was

Dear Abby: I am engaged to an amazing guy. We have been together a little more than two years. During our first year, his family was great to me. They acted as if they liked me. However, things have changed. When my fiance and I are around them, they just wave and have little to say to me, if they say anything at all. They never call or text me; I'm always the one to do it first. Several times when I have texted, they haven't replied. My fiance is very supportive. He tells me things will get better and tries to make me feel better about it, but I'm starting to get the impression they don't like me. Also, I don't feel I have anything in common with his mother and sister, which makes me feel even more awkward. If you and your fiance have a good relationship, stop obsessing about his family. They may have made a fuss over you in the beginning because you were "new." Now a year has passed, and the novelty has worn off. I'm sorry your relationship with his family hasn't turned out to be what you envisioned it would be, but life can be like that. So take this step by step. Nurture the relationships you have with friends, other couples and your own family. Relax, enjoy the life you are building with the man you love and take your cues for dealing with your future in-laws from your fiance. He knows them better than we do.
Dear Abby: My stepson, who had bipolar II, died by suicide a year and a half ago when we were away. We thought he was doing better, and his mom saw no reason to stay at our house while we were gone for a few days. The police told us he had made his decision and there was nothing we could have done. This was my husband's youngest, and he lived with us for 12 years. I grew quite fond of him, but I wasn't with him for the first 18 years of his life. I am still grieving, but my husband is grieving more. He had a heart attack five months to the day after his son's suicide and then open-heart surgery. As my friend said after visiting him yesterday, that's depression to the nth degree. He doesn't see the need for therapy, and he hates extra medication. What can I do?

DEAR Concerned: Tell your husband you are still grieving the loss of your stepson and you know he is, too. Explain that you have a strong suspicion his recent heart attack may have been connected to the tragic loss of his son. His doctors should be put on notice if they don't already know the whole story. If your husband is adamant about not getting grief counseling, tell him YOU are joining a grief support group, and you NEED him to accompany you because you love him and don't want to lose him, too.

finally forced to give up, Cornwallis refused to do his duty and attend the October 19, 1781 surrender ceremony. Pleading illness, he foisted the unpleasant job onto O’Hara. O’Hara then tried to get in his own parting dig against the Americans. When it came time to formally surrender his sword, he handed it to the Comte de Rochambeau. But the French commander deferred to General George Washington, who then made O’Hara hand it over to General Benjamin Lincoln. That was significant because Lincoln had been forced to surrender to the British when Charleston, S.C., fell some 18 months earlier. O’Hara’s bad luck continued back in England, where his massive gambling debts caught up with him, and he was forced to flee to the Continent to avoid his creditors. His old boss Cornwallis eventually came to his rescue, bailing him out so O’Hara could return home. But he didn’t stay there long. As the century drew to a close, he was promoted to lieutenant general and made governor of Gibraltar. But just when it seemed O’Hara’s life was back on track, his train derailed again. With the French Revolution in full swing, attention focused on the important port city of Toulon. The British, Prussians, Austrians, Dutch, and Spanish monarchies wanted to keep the seeds of revolution that had sent France’s king to guillotine from blowing into their countries. French fighters opposed to the revolution seized the port. The British sent soldiers led by O’Hara to support them. French Revolutionary forces were also dispatched to Toulon for a showdown.
J. Mark Powell On Sept. 8, 1793, a young, untested French officer arrived and was placed in command of the Revolutionary artillery. He devised a plan that led to the capture of a key hill, giving his guns command of the port city. There was a series of back-and-forth fighting. In the final round, O’Hara was wounded again. And once again, he was forced to surrender to the commander of the forces who inflicted defeat. It was an obscure Corsican named Napoleon Bonaparte. (The victory at Toulon launched Bonaparte down the path toward becoming Emperor a decade later.) O’Hara spent two years in a Paris prison (where he was threatened with a date with Madame Guillotine) until he was finally exchanged for the Comte de Rochambeau, the same officer he had tried to surrender to at Yorktown 14 years earlier. He fell in love and got engaged, but the relationship fell apart when he was appointed governor of Gibraltar again, and his betrothed refused to leave England. He died on the Rock from his old war wounds in 1802 at the age of 61. (Or 62. His precise age is fuzzy due to the murky circumstances surrounding his illegitimate birth.) While his record on the battlefield was only so-so at best, Charles O’Hara holds a distinction no other officer could claim—or want: He was the only person in history to surrender to both George Washington and Napoleon Bonaparte.

Rosey in for another Chamber Minute: Bob More wrote some words in lieu of a speech at the Bay Area Chamber Awards Banquet, I would like to share the words of our 2023 Citizen of the Year Bob More. “I came to live in this community nearly fifty years ago with ordinary plans of raising my family, earning a living and contributing to community life. One of my goals in achieving this was to find ways I could be
of service. While building and operating a restaurant was service of a sort; “food service”-I quickly became engaged in other kinds of community service such as serving on the Port of Coos Bay Advisory Committee. “Being of service” slowly evolved into my goal of being a community builder. I was determined NOT to strive for this in any grand way, but to work as much as possible flying under the radar. The reward for me all along has been in working on community problems/issues and seeing projects achieve some success. I hold the
belief that, like the saying “all politics is local” the nation’s health and well-being is built at the community level. As an individual that is where I can make a difference. So can we all! Many of the members of the Bay Area Chamber of Commerce are community Builders. At the awards banquet, Mark Mattecheck was an excellent example as he told the story of how North Bend Lanes and his employees faced the challenge of covid. They did community building in a literal sense. Ron Kutch is a community builder working on our area’s
problem of homelessness and lack of housing. Those are just two examples among many Chamber members who help our community thrive by giving service as community builders. Thank you for the honor bestowed upon me, as your citizen of the year I encourage every member of the Bay Area Chamber of Commerce to consider how they provide community service, and to think of ways that they can become community builders. AIRPORT PARK REHABILITATION BEGINS WITH GROUNDBREAKING THURSDAY (North Bend) - The Coos County Airport District and the Coos Bay-North Bend Rotary Club will host a ceremonial groundbreaking at the Airport Heights Park Playground to kick off a revitalization project. The park is located inside the property boundaries of the district and has been in place since the development of the neighborhood more than 40 years ago. The two organizations signed a Memorandum of Understanding to rehabilitate the park using a multiyear phased approach. That will start with the removal of some play structures, the placement of new equipment, and the development of a master plan for the 13-acre park/recreation area. The park currently includes an outdoor volleyball area, a basketball court, tennis courts, baseball fields, and a playground area. The district purchased a swing set and multi-use Synergy Play System to add to the playground area. The equipment will be installed over the next five weeks. While work is happening, the playground area will be temporarily closed. The rest of the park and trails will remain open to the public. Some of the playground areas may be re-opened on the weekend. The groundbreaking will start several months of planning to create a master plan for the entire park area. The public is invited to attend and learn more about the project and help celebrate the beginning of the project. The groundbreaking ceremony begins at 1:30 pm on Thursday, February 8, 2024. Airport Heights Park is located off Colorado near Airport Lane in North Bend, OR. The public will have several opportunities to present ideas and offer input as options for the park are developed. Price Robison Parsons was born on the 17th of June 1953 in Myrtle Point, Oregon, and passed away peacefully on December 28, 2023, in North Bend, Oregon, after a short illness. Price is the son of Eugene Donald and Patricia Bell Parsons. Price grew up in Myrtle Point until his junior year of high school when his family moved to Coquille. Price attended Coquille High School and played on the 1970 State championship football team. In 1972, Price joined the United States Navy and served

John later, in his early 20’s relocated to Coos Bay working in the timber industry starting with Coos Head Timber and later landing a job with Weyerhaeuser company at the North Bend lumber facility. In May of 1967 John was drafted into the Vietnam War for the United States Army 39th Combat Engineers Division A company (CBT). While in country he was assigned to Forward Base LZ Ross and later reassigned to Forward Base LZ Young. It was at LZ Young that John was seriously injured. He was part of a forward relief party to support engineers that had been pinned down in an ambush. This battle became known as “The Hook” which occurred on Sept 17th 1968. John was medivaced to Chu Lai Army hospital that following morning.
Later to Tokyo hospital and finally to Fort Ord Army Hospital in Monterey California for further treatment and rehabilitation that required over 2 years of hospitalization. John received the following accommodations for his service in the Vietnam War: The Purple Heart, Vietnam Service Metal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal and a Sharpshooter Badge (M14 service rifle). John was later permanently retired (Honorable) by the U.S Army for injuries sustained from combat in the Vietnam War. John met the Love of his Life, Marlene Fertuna in Gustine, California at a local Portuguese Celebration prior to him leaving for Vietnam in 1967. John and Marlene courted through mail while John was overseas and they would later marry in June of 1969 in Hayward, California. They settled in Seaside, California and had four children, Joe, Lloyd, Cordelia and Joann. While John resided in Seaside he acquired his Student Pilots License, High School Diploma and a College Associates Degree at Lasell University as a personal goal for himself to accomplish after the war. The family would live in Seaside until early 1981. John and Marlene wanted to relocate to an area to raise the children in a more rural setting, choosing to move back to Coos Bay, OR. John enjoyed many facets of life including his tractors, reloading, hunting and fishing, gardening, flying, camping, Amateur Radio (operator KB7NTJ), his 1964 Ford pickup restoration project, and dirt work projects on his property. At Sunny Hill School: PTA, Room Mothers, scouts, Hillbilly plays, and 4-H. At Blue Pacific Breakers C.B. club she spent many hours on their annual jamboree and coffee stop activities and was inducted into their Hall of Fame. She was always optimistic, a friend to many and remained joyful even in the face of a lung cancer diagnosis in 2019. She loved to bake and can and shared it freely with others. She was outgoing and for several years enjoyed working as a Door Greeter at Coos Bay Walmart. After retirement she often said she would love to return as she missed
Timothy Joseph Stellatino, 40, of North Bend, OR, passed away peacefully on January 27, 2024 following a very short illness. Devoted husband of Angela, loving father to McKenna and Devin Stellatino, and stepfather to Sarah Fiorelli, son of Christina and Tim Stellatino, brother of Jenna Niehoff and Zachary Stellatino. Family was everything to Tim. He was a doting father, had a very close relationship with his parents and sister, and had married the love of his life, Angela, just last year. He is deeply
missed by all. Tim was an active member of the community, always willing to lend a helping hand. With a passion for cooking, he reveled in delighting loved ones with his culinary skills. He was an entrepreneur, and many knew him from The Grounds Café and Stellatino’s Auto Detail, or recognized his red Chrysler 300 Hemi with the TANQ plates. He had a wonderful sense of humor, and with his outgoing nature, he made friends wherever he went. His sense of joy, his gentle nature and kindness touched the
lives of many. As a lifelong bible student, he found strength and guidance in God’s word. His faith never wavered, even in his final moments.

Anne drove off into sunset, leaving this life at 94 years young. She was a true lover of life, an optimist filled with wonder and questions nobody had the answers to. Her laugh was infectious and her wit was sharp. She will be remembered as a loving matriarch, wonderful friend, mediocre cook and terribly impatient. Waiting for anyone or anything was simply not her style. Anne was born February 17th, 1929 in Hiawassee, Georgia as the 4th of 7 children to parents Truman and Stella Holmes. She is survived by her sister Imogene, her 4 children: Stan, Vicki, Rod, and Amy, 3 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, and many loving extended family members. She is preceded in death by many adored family and friends whom she missed dearly. Anne was an independent spirit, living alone into her 90s. In
her childhood, “Annie Ruth” could be found running barefoot in rural Georgia with her siblings and expertly evading farm chores. As a young adult, Anne began her most treasured adventure, becoming a mother after marrying Basil “Ed” Edwards. She loved their early travels around the country, birthing each of her children in a different state. After settling to raise her children in southern California, she retired in Oregon to immerse herself in the role of “Nana”. She taught us so many
things: to parallel park, to find humor in any situation, to be painfully honest when someone cooks something you dislike, to be ever curious, find beauty where others might not think to look, and to never leave the house without a pocket full of tissues. She taught us all how to love. Anne will be forever missed and impossible to forget. Let’s keep Anne’s spirit alive by cherishing her memory, indulging in awe, and sharing love with wild abandon. Boys and Girls Club highlights programs for local children By BREE LAUGHLIN The World
Boys and Girls Clubs across the United States are dedicated to assisting all youth to achieve their fullest potential. The Boys and Girls Club of Southwestern Oregon serves as a local example of the way the organization carries out this mission. While many community members recognize the Boys and Girls Club as a helpful community resource, they may not realize all that that the Boys and Girls Club has to offer local children. Boys and Girls Club representatives said it takes an army of people, a safe environment, high-quality programs and unique experiences to level the playing field for all kids. “We have our obvious objectives, which are academic success, leadership, strength of character,” said Jay Link, the local Boys and Girls Club program director. “I want the kids in-
volved in this club to take away those key components, as well as knowing that they really are cared about. They are a part of our community and they are our future – and we're taking the time and committing the resources to provide them with an environment to thrive,” Link said. Program director Link said the after school program offers more than a drop off place for children. It is a structured program that offers all kinds of activities and enrichment programs. “The Boys and Girls Club it isn't just free time out on the games floor or playing sports, there's a huge educational opportunity,” Link said. “They're not just sitting home on the Xbox, staring at a TV or sitting there texting away the hours. They're engaging, they're keeping their minds stimulated and they are socializing.” The local facility in Coos Bay is separated into youth, middle school and teen activity areas.
Children in first through twelfth grades have access to arts and crafts, computers, a STEM lab, gymnasium, tennis, a learning center, table games and educational enrichment programs. “It's a safe environment for them to be their best selves,” the local Boys and Girls Club Program Director said. “They have people that care about them progressing in the future and having the tools to succeed, to be a contributing member of society, and to be a part of the future community that supports this organization,” Link said. The nonprofit organization is funded by community donations, grants, fundraisers and membership dues. Charles "Chuck" Leslie May 10, 1929 – January 26, 2024
Long-time resident and small-business owner, Charles “Chuck” Leslie, 94, passed away in Coos Bay on January 26, 2024. He was born, the youngest of five children, on May 10, 1929, in Vancouver, Washington, to Charles and Winifred Leslie. The family moved frequently, so Chuck spent his childhood briefly in Texas, primarily in Los Angeles, and eventually in New Orleans where he graduated from high school. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a radio operator and as a crew member in a PBY Catalina flying boat. He moved back to Vancouver, where his family had since returned, when he was honorably discharged. In 1948, during what
was meant to be a two-week trip to Coos Bay to visit his brother, Chuck got a job at Evans lumber mill and put down roots. He and his friends frequented the roller skating rink, where as a consequence of “Ladies Choice” he met LaVerne Frakes in 1950. A few months later, they began a marriage that lasted 69 years and included proudly raising two children, Carol Leslie and Bob Leslie. After the lumber mill, Chuck worked at a service station, which he later bought and ran as Chuck Leslie’s Mobil Service, a fixture for decades at the junction of Broadway and old highway 101. When he closed the business, he worked for Troyer and Barnard, Verger’s, and Ken Ware, retiring in
1992. As a small-business owner, he enjoyed rare vacations, either camping with family and friends in Nesika Park and commuting to work or deer hunting in the Steens Mountains and later elk hunting in Ukiah. On his last hunting trip, he stayed in camp with the sole responsibilities of keeping the fire hot and the beer cold. Chuck was an animated story-teller and could bend your ear for a good long time, enjoying every minute. One of his favorite Depression-era childhood tales was about amending the sign on his shoe shine box. When the cost of a movie ticket went up to 10 cents, he changed his
prices from 5 cents to “5 cents—a shoe.” Chuck was a longtime volunteer Coos Bay fire fighter and a lifetime member of the Elks club. Chuck made good friends with his neighbors in Eastside where he had lived in the same house that he and LaVerne bought in 1954. In retirement, they enjoyed zigzagging across the state and the country in their fifth wheel, exploring, fishing, and visiting far-flung friends and relatives. Chuck also perfected a new hobby: making seedless blackberry jam. If anyone ever asked how he removed the seeds, he always answered with a straight face, “With tweezers.” Chuck lived a good, long life, amusing people with his stories to
the very end. Chuck is survived by his daughter, Carol Leslie; son, Bob (Benette) Leslie; grandsons, Beau Leslie, Benjamin Leslie, David (Mary Bujnak) Leslie Wimmer, and Karl Leslie Wimmer, and many nephews, nieces, friends, and neighbors. He is preceded in death by his father, Charles Leslie; mother, Winifred Leslie; and siblings, Dudley Leslie, Bill Leslie, Wilfred (Audrey) Leslie, and Dorothy Pollard. A joint memorial service and reception for both Chuck and LaVerne, who passed in 2020, will be held at First Baptist Church, 1140 S. 10th Street, Coos Bay, on Saturday, February 17, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. A celebration of life will

track meet at age 16. The rest is history. The two married in 1961 and raised three children during their 62-year marriage – Aaron, Laura and Debra. They lived in Corvallis and Albany where Gary began a teaching career, before returning to Myrtle Point and the Echo Valley homestead in 1968. Kathy worked at Myrtle Point High School for 20 years, first as attendance secretary and later in the counseling office. She and Gary retired in 1998. Kathy loved the beach and visiting new places. She traveled to Europe, Uruguay, Brazil, Costa Rica, Colombia and around the United States, to name a few locations. She hiked the Rogue River trail and
was the Coos County Fair apple pie winner. An avid gardener, she instilled a love of plants in her children and grandchildren who looked forward to starting seeds with her in the greenhouse. Kathy was adored by countless friends and family. Her sincere thoughtfulness and kind servant’s heart set her apart. She was a member of the Myrtle Point First Christian Church and volunteered at the Coos County Logging Museum and Myrtle Point Senior Center. Even as she battled sickness, Kathy’s faith and trust in Jesus remained strong. Kathy was preceded in death by her parents; sister Eileen
(Johnnie) Franich; and grandchildren Isabel and Samuel McCormick. to serve two years as a medical doctor in the U.S. Army at Fort Moore (formerly Fort Benning), Georgia. From there, they returned to Portland, where he completed his residency in Ophthalmology at OHSU and served one year on the OHSU Staff. Recognizing the need for an Ophthalmologist on the Southern Oregon Coast, in 1970, he returned to his hometown of North Bend, Oregon, where he founded the Bay Eye Clinic and Optical Lab. John played an active and vital role in the medical community throughout and beyond his practicing career. Upon retirement, John and Joy relocated to the Portland area, where he remained engaged in education and service through OHSU Casey Eye Institute, volunteering his time and expertise to their outreach program and as a Cataract Surgical Instructor to senior residents, for which they honored him with a teaching award for this
contribution. An avid and recognized philanthropist, John's passion and commitment to helping others led him to organize numerous medical missions to Ecuador, where he performed free eye surgeries and supported local orphanages. He was an active and proud Bay Area Rotary and Lions Club member. Locally, he co-founded and supported the Lions Annual Eye Care Program, providing free eye exams to Coos and Curry County schoolchildren. As a purveyor of lifelong learning, he supported various foundations and educational programs to enrich others and was a lifelong Catholic and devoted member of the Church. Despite retiring in Portland, he maintained his local engagement, serving on the Southwestern Oregon Community College (SWOCC) Foundation Board and establishing the SWOCC Flaxel Family Scholarship fund to assist others
in pursuing higher education. Outside his professional life, John was curious and open to everything. He said he would do anything once and twice if he liked it. Together with Joy, they loved to travel, they passionately supported the Oregon Ducks as alumni and were avid sports and tailgating fans. Above all, he cherished spending time with family and friends on annual hunting trips or family vacations to Palm Springs, Black Butte Ranch, and North Bend. He made it a priority to be present at all family gatherings, whether here or abroad and was deeply engaged in the lives of his immediate and extended family. John loved the arts, expressing his creativity through his life-long love of photography and recently acquired enthusiasm for gardening and the art of attracting hummingbirds. John will be remembered as very generous, humble, and

Kathleen Louise (Spires) Larsen, 82, of Myrtle Point died January 27, 2024. She was born December 15, 1941 in Myrtle Point to Roy and Kathleen (Marsters) Spires. A beloved wife and devoted mother, Kathy’s love and patience extended to all who knew her. She was quick to hug and would always make time for friends, new and old. Kathy’s life came full circle on the Echo Valley Century Ranch, homesteaded by her grandparents Lloyd and Emma Spires. She died surrounded by loving family in the house where she was born and raised her own children. Growing up on the homestead, everything
was tied to family. Kathy and her sister Avis lived for summers when older siblings Stan and Eileen would return to the farm with their children. This summer tradition would continue even after Kathy and Avis had their own families, providing strong bonds between cousins who were much like siblings themselves. As a member of the Twin Oaks 4-H Club, Kathy raised animals, including Polk-a-Dot, a favorite jersey heifer. John Thad Flaxel, born September 13, 1936, in North Bend, Oregon, passed away peacefully at home in Portland, surrounded by his family, on October 26, 2023, at the age of 87, after a courageous battle with cancer. He would have happily lived 100 years or more if left up to him. John is lovingly remembered by his wife and sweetheart of 61 years, Joy Merelli, whom he married in 1962, just three months after their blind date. Together, they raised their six children, Christina, Bill, Kathy, Teresa, Gina, and Johnny, and were blessed with ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren who treasured every memory and moment with him. His happiest times were in the chaos and mayhem accompanied by an extended family this size. He is survived by his sisters Kay, Geri, and Linda and their children, whom he loved dearly and enjoyed spending time with. His parents, Ben and Agnes

He obtained a degree in chemistry from the University of Oregon and was a proud member of the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. He graduated in 1958 Summa Cum Laude and was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa honor society. Continuing his pursuit of knowledge, John graduated from medical school at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) in 1963, followed by a one-year Master's in Pathology. He completed a threeyear internship at Chicago Medical School before being called

North Bend Senior Center hosts Valentine’s craft fair Center serves as social hub for local seniors

The hum of conversation and laughter could be heard throughout the North Bend Senior Center as community members perused artisan items being presented by local vendors. The North Bend Senior Center hosted the hosted the Artisan Craft Fair on Sunday, Feb. 4, inviting the community to purchase Valentine’s Day gifts for their loved ones. The fair featured about 20 local vendors offering a wide variety of items, from sweet treats, balloons and stickers, to jewelry, paintings, greeting cards and wood-working creations. The Authentic Filipino food truck was also on site for the event. “Some items are folksy could be considered arts and crafts. Other things are quite sophisticated. So there is a real blend and mix of items that we have,” said Jim Behrends, vice president of the
North Bend Senior Center. Behrends said the senior center will be hosting another craft fair in May featuring even more vendors, and a food truck. The local senior center leader said the craft fairs are just one of many opportunities the center offers for local senior citizens and other community members. Center organizers report offering more than 800 fun and engaging activities and events throughout 2023, from Bingo, dancing and exercise classes to card game groups and photography clubs. The North Bend Senior Center mobilized more than 5,000 hours of volunteer service in 2023 to keep the senior center running smoothly. They also worked with community partners to provide more than 14,000 free nutritious lunches to local seniors. Behrends said the Senior Center benefits local community members in a variety of ways. “We have individuals who use this
center for our meal program who do not have access to kitchens in their living situation. We have people that use our meal program, or come to our other events, to socialize and it is the high point of their week,” Behrends said. “We've had countless individuals come in and say one of the things they get excited about every day is a chance to come down here and mingle with their friends,” he said. The North Bend Senior Center board of directors is running a capital campaign to raise money for their 2024 programs. A supporter has offered to match every donation up to $5,000 until June 30.
