Bear is a 2-year-old German Shepherd certified to detect dangerous drugs, including Fentanyl. Bear and his handler, Detective McQuillan, will be utilized in patrol investigations as well as proactive work with shipping companies and the Eugene Airport. They are partnering with local schools in the county to help maintain safe campuses. They will also assist the Lane County Jail to prevent drugs from entering the facility. Bear started working less than a month ago and has already assisted with the seizure of a half-pound of cocaine, a half-pound of Fentanyl, and five and a half pounds of meth. Good boy Bear! University of Oregon had released the names of its top students, recognizing their Academic achievements and five local students made the Deans List. According to the OSU website, students must obtain a 3.75 Grade Pont Average or higher to make the lsy and results are posted every term. About 5,000 Oregon Ducks made the 2023 Fall term list, and total undergraduate enrollment was 19,707 students. Siuslaw graduates who made the list were Sophomore Isabell Ann Below, Freshman Malia Ann Dayanan, Freshman Ryan Ray Denning and Sophomore Hayden Riley Houlihan. Also making the list was Junior Emily B. Stevens of Mapleton. Lists are released each term and searchable spredsheets can be found on the OSU website.

King then produced a copy of a response from Oregon State Representative Kevin Mannix. “Mr. Mannix is a standing Oregon state representative at this time. He is also a practicing attorney, and he helped write the bill that ORS 338 comes from. That’s the charter school bill. He co-sponsored the bill, so he has first-hand knowledge of the intent, I’m going to ask you to remember that word, intent, of the bill. When a bill is written you may know this already, but when a bill is written at the bottom of the bill our definitions of words that correspond to the bill so that they are clear. In this case, there was no definition at the bottom of the word affiliate. So, since there’s no definition, only using the Webster’s Dictionary definition as Mr. Cohn Lee suggests, simply would not hold up in a court of law.” Mannix’s letter stated, “It is important to clarify the distinction between the adoption of a curriculum model and establishing an affiliation with a religious order, institution, or church. The mere utilization of a curriculum model does not constitute an affiliation. Affiliation, and legal context, implies a

context of the statutory provision at issue. Which includes other provisions of the same statute and other related statutes.” Judge referred to a statement by Cohn-Lee where he said that Hillsdale’s legal counsel was suggesting the board should ignore ORG338. “I did not suggest that the board ignore ORS chapter 338 on the affiliation requirement, she said. Rather, I visited that the board should follow section 338, interpreting it in line with every other time affiliated is defined under the Oregon code. This reading has the added benefit of being constitutional, as explained in my Dec. 1, 2023 letter. LETTERS A MILESTONE MOVE TOWARD CLIMATE RESILIENCE

Something extraordinary happened at the Florence City Council meeting on January 5th. The Mayor and four council members voted unanimously to approve participation in Lane County’s

application to the EPA’s Community Change Grant program. One year ago I alerted Mayor Ward about a grant writer resource at Lane County’s Policy Team. As a result, the City made a commitment to work with Lane County to pursue funds for large resilience infrastructure projects. Assistant City Manager Megan Messmer explained that Lane County’s Policy Team approached them saying EPA allocated $2 billion from the Inflation Reduction Act of which $20 million could be allocated to 4 to 6 cities throughout Lane County. The County would be focusing on Resilience Hubs. The strategy is to retrofit an already existing facility that provides services to the community. The City is considering the Senior Center as a Resilience Hub since it is a natural gathering place and serves a more vulnerable population. The Senior Center is owned by the City and managed by the Senior Booster Club. his followers, by the party itself; by the likes of Elise Stefanic, James Comer, Rhona McDaniel, Josh Hawley, John Thune, Ted Cruz, Steve Scalise, Lindsey Graham, Mike Johnson, Jim Jordan, and others whose names don’t deserve mentioning, all laughable and spineless characters who saw the writing on the wall and knew that they must join the slaughter and accept the lies or be politically destroyed themselves. And when Trump gets the party’s nomination, which he surely shall, its last breath will have been expended and the last nail driven into the coffin. All that will be needed will be the spreading of the final shovelful of dirt on the grave And what is left will need a new name. ‘Republican’ will surely no longer fit (even Trump knows that) and the party will no longer be Grand or Old. It could be called the Vengeance Party or the Authoritarians or the Despicables (after the character in the movie) or, better yet, the Destroyers of Democracy (DOD rather than GOP). Its followers could be simply called ‘Trumps’, or, as some already call them, ‘Thugs’, in echo of the term given Hitler’s Nazis. (‘Trumpers’ is too silly a term, as if Trump were a joke and should be treated as such. He is no joke, though he is pretty silly.) I’m not advocating an alternative to Trump in order to save the party. It is too late for that. And, as far as Nikki Haley is concerned – though she clearly would be a vastly better candidate than Trump – one is unsure exactly what she believes in regarding a woman’s right to abortion, or the cause of the Civil War (she seems to think that it was not slavery), or the presence of racism in American (she thinks that America ‘has never been a racist country’). She is a worrisome candidate, at best. In the meantime, Joe Biden, the very old president – he is exactly my age, yet he, like I, can walk (albeit sometimes carefully), and talk (stumbling over a word or two occasionally, the way we all do at any age), write a complete and literate sentence, think clearly, and make decisions – he, who can still do all of these things (and probably will do so for several more years) continues to offer us stability, which is precisely what we need now. Historians consider George Washington’s greatest achievement as president to be the stability he provided, thus giving us time as a new nation, founded on the radical concepts of liberty and democracy, to adjust to a new way of life and to a new political environment. In an unstable world at home and in Europe in the late eighteenth century, Washington provided the steadiness, the firmness, we needed in order to endure and prosper. Biden offered the same in 2020, and, though some persons strongly object to his policies, he offers the same now: he offers stability. George Durant, Florence

Oregon Coast Humane Society to host Vintage Estate Sale in Florence

Oregon Coast Humane Society’s volunteer-powered Estate Sale Team is hosting A Very Vintage Estate Sale February 16-18. The sale features vintage clothing, accessories, furniture, and home decor curated over six decades. The sale will be held at the Vintage House located at 1179 Bay Street in Florence. A portion of the proceeds will support the animals at Oregon Coast Humane Society. Executive Director Elizabeth Thompson says this sale is unlike any other they’ve ever held. “The

woman who collected these pieces throughout her life is an animal lover, and we are honored that she’s invited to host this sale to support her family and our shelter pets. She’s provided historical information about many of the pieces in the collection, and shoppers will be inspired by the attention to detail and historical education included on many of the pieces.” Oregon Coast Humane Society’s Estate Sale Team is run by volunteers with support from an OCHS Board member and one staff member. Oregon Battle of the Books The 2024 regional Oregon Battle of the Books tournament will take place on Saturday, March 9th at Siuslaw Middle School. This is Siuslaw’s first time hosting a regional OBOB event. 24 middle school teams from Lane County will compete. The top two teams will move on to compete at the state OBOB finals. Siuslaw’s team this year is called the Drachen Warriors. Team members in the photo are: Zoey Stanger, Riley Stanger, Jeremy Weisenbach, and Talmage Lake (not pictured Connor Buckalew). Their coach is Kelly Dotson.

How does OBOB work? Students in middle school read up to 16 books from a specific list each year and answer questions on the content of those books. Books are selected and questions are written by volunteer teams of teachers, librarians, and parents. What are the benefits of OBOB? Participation in this competition fosters a love of reading in students and can generate much excitement about academic achievement.

The program continues to grow each year to the point now where thousands of students participate at the school level in this important literary enterprise. Students are also introduced to a variety of genres (from graphic novels to historical fiction) and diverse authors. “The other question is then what happens if we don’t use this curriculum?” She said. “We will have to pay a lot of money to buy curriculum of quality that this is. We will have to pay more money for training of teachers and the classical education model. That’s a waste of taxpayer dollars, which if we can get those services for free, why wouldn’t we, and save the money for the district to be used in the classroom. This is reward season for the Siuslaw Vikings’ hard-working wrestlers. The Lady Vikings begin to get their due this weekend at Cottage Grove. The boys got the first payoff last weekend at Sheridan with a strong showing. Final reward is the state meet next week in Portland. “Now we prepare for the girls district at Cottage Grove Friday and Saturday,” Siuslaw coach Neil Wartnik said. “They are a great group to work with.” Junior Macali Lade looks to defend her state title at 110, while senior Jane Lacouture will try to improve on her third-place finish at state. Sophomore Danin Lacouture (140) and junior Abby Riggs (115) are strong contenders in their weight classes at district, while Yaya Edward (100) looks to get the most from her freshman season. “Macali, Jane, Danin and Abby have had outstanding seasons,” Wartnik said, “and look to be a force at district and state.”

Senior Junior Macali Lade The Vikings boys are coming off a solid performance at district, with four state qualifiers. “The team had nine (district) placers, compare to six last year,” Wartnik said. “They did well.” Sophomore Jacob Mann and senior Dayne Muller won individual titles, junior Leo Robertson was runner-up and senior Derrick Vanduch qualified by pin in the third-place match. “Stellar efforts by Muller and Mann,” Wartnik said. “Derrick had a great tournament. He competed very well

against the eventual champion in the semifinals, and he had four pins to boot. “Leo looked a bit flat in the finals, but his second place finish was according to seed.” The top three in each of the 14 weight classes advanced to state. “(Junior) Chuck Nelson had a great tournament, winning three of his five matches on his way to a fifthplace finish,” Wartnik said. “(Freshman) Gavyn Taylor also had a pair of solid wins on his way to a fifth-place finish.”

Three schools have 10 or more wrestlers entered — Sweet Home (13), Sutherlin (12) and Grant Union (10). Marshfield, Reedsport, Waldport and Newport are among schools with no entries.

And it was the end of Mountain Valley Conference games for the Lady Vikings, who join the Far West League next school year. Far West League opponents will not be new to the Lady Vikings, who played Coquille, Glide and South Umpqua this season in preleague games.

The Mapleton Sailor boys and girls basketball teams are both enjoying their best seasons in recent history. In the case of the Sailor boys team this is one of the best starts to a season ever. Mapleton’s roundball teams closed out their regular season on Feb. 15 with home games against Mohawk. Those results were not available before press deadlines but both Sailor teams had wrapped up postseason berths well before the end of their league seasons. The MHS boys are on an incredible run. The team came into that final league game with the Mustangs riding an amazing 16-game winning streak, with their last loss coming before the conference season began, on Dec. 14 at Myrtle Point.

Just since the beginning of February the upriver basketball boys racked up five Mountain West league wins by an average margin of victory of 25 points. First, on Feb. 1, Mapleton traveled down Highway 36 to face the Sailors’ closest rival, geographically and in the standings, Triangle Lake. The first half was a difficult test for the visitors. The Sailors could not build more than a 6-point lead. Things were different after the halftime break. “The Sailors flipped the script and blitzed the Lakers,” said Mapleton boys basketball coach Eric Wolgamott. The Sailors scored a game high 26 points in the third quarter to take command. It was 56-34 going into the 4th and 67-51 when the final buzzer sounded. Leading

scorer was senior Keevyn Walker with 20 points. Two days later when Crow came to town they and the Sailors were the last undefeated teams in the Mountain West League. After the Cougars kept it close for the first three quarters the Sailors until the home team pulled away and won 41-29. That win left the Sailors as the lone undefeated team left in the league. Junior Alex Burnett led Mapleton in scoring 41-29. Feb. 6 was Senior Night and seniors Walker, Brian Burnett, Tristan Stewart and Dominick Stewart were honored for playing their last season of high school basketball. The Sailors blew out McKenzie after the festivities, 54-21. Road wins over Mohawk (62-13) and Crow (50-35) followed putting the Sailors

record at 21-2 overall and 13-0 in league play. This will go down as one of the best regular seasons in Mapleton boys basketball history and the team heads into the postseason with a ton of momentum. The Mapleton girls basketball team is also enjoying a stellar season. The Lady Sailors started February with a loss to Triangle Lake on the first, 46-37. Mapleton was led by freshman Lucie Burruss with 14 points 5 rebounds and 2 steals and junior Helen Burruss with 7 points 3 steals and 2 assists. The team then rolled to two relatively easy home victories. First, on Feb. 3 the team rolled over Crow 50-23. Lucie Burruss scored over half her team’s points and finished with 28 on the night.

Three days later on Senior Night Mapleton locked down the visiting McKenzie Eagles allowing the visitors to score just five points in a 37-5 victory. Lucie Burruss again led the team in scoring, this time with 18 points. Seniors Kylee Carson, Samantha Cody and Tiyler Gloe were honored as they wrapped up their Sailor roundball careers. The Mapleton girls team lost to Mohawk 35-29 on Feb. 8 then bounced back with a win over Crow, 47-20. At press deadlines the Lady Sailors record sits at 13-10 overall and 9-4 in league play. Like their male counterparts, the team is on course to play into the postseason and possibly on to the state tournament. Mapleton freshman Roenin Barrows has been named Coast Radio’s athlete of the week Feb. 12, after leading the Lady Sailors basketball team over Crow, 50-35, this past Saturday. Barrows hit four 3-point goals and scored 22 points in the game. Coast Radio, the Siuslaw News and the Sports Club are cosponsors of the award. Siuslaw senior Derrick Vanduch was honorable mention after qualifying for the OSAA 3A state wrestling championships with a third-place finish at Sheridan on Saturday. Vanduch is 38-16, with the second-most wins on the Vikings’ boys team.
