Gusty winds moved the fire quickly, but personnel made quick work of it. House said the fire was knocked down within a half-hour, by which time it had grown to 150 by 150 feet in size. “It was a fluke occurrence,” House said. “We had an east wind prior to the fire which is notorious for drying conditions and at the time, we had about 20 percent humidity. I guess the moral of the story is that we’ve been seeing fire behavior like never before, over the last five years. A cause of the fire has not been determined. Local woman donates to teens again

Sutton Lake Fire Station hosted a party this year where 50 area teenagers were given bags of gifts, stockings, holiday cheer and pizza. For 11 years, Vicki Ambrosio, Owner and operator of Twin Lakes Grocery & Liquor, has been organizing and fundraising a yearly holiday giveaway for teens living north of Heceta Beach. At the party, large, heavy bags of gifts and stockings were handed out by name to kids who provided wish lists earlier this year. Ambrosio noted that this year’s party went quicker than usual due to a forgotten detail. “In my speech, I didn’t tell the kids it was ok to open a present or two,” she said. “Usually, they get into them and open them all up, and it takes an extra hour.” She said that in years after Covid, the even was more of a distribution, so kids were used to taking the bags and going home.

In a quiet little coastal town like Florence, not a lot goes on that everyone doesn’t immediately know about. News of a new business or event in town will spread with digital speed across social media. Fundraisers and community events take place regularly and street corner demonstrations are almost expected on nicer days. Of course, a lot goes on behind the scenes as local legislators struggle to address issues that won’t go away on their own; homelessness, cost of living, housing, and employment. Local legislators spent a lot of 2023 just pushing the stone toward solutions, but 2023 saw no major successes in those areas. However, in the final weeks of December, a few local events from this year caught our attention. In Florence, the year started with a newly sworn-in mayor, Rob Ward and two new city councilors, Jo Beaudreau and Robert Carp. “I think we’re going to do some good things,” Ward said. “We have a legacy to follow, we have a lot of work to do - and I’m excited to see how good we really are.” Residents of Mapleton were back to normal in February after a large

water leak was found and repaired near Stagecoach Road. The leak was estimated to be losing approximately 80,000 gallons of water a day. Once fixed, customers had running water, though delivering consistent clean water continued for some time. “We did find a new leak - much smaller (20,000 gallons) than the bigger leak (80,000 gallons) that was fixed last week,” said Vanessa West, MWD Board Member. “This leak is not as easy to fix; it is in a valve. So, we will need to hire outside help to fix it.” While it was being fixed, bottled water was made available to those who needed it.

Ed McGuire was sworn in as Dunes City Mayor in November. After reported outages on March 4, the Mapleton Water District had water flowing again but because of pressure problems, as of press deadlines, a boil water notice is in effect. There were more outages on Monday, March 6, according to Board of Directors Chair Vanessa West, they were the result of problems where the water flows from Berkshire Creek into the district’s treatment plant. “Thanks to Ronney, Brian and two other local volunteers, the intake is unplugged,” said West on social media. “Luckily it wasn’t a tree this time — leaves plugged the intake.”

Coast snow?

A May protest raised some eyebrows, and questions, during a show in Florence. The group of mostly masked protestors spent most of the afternoon of Saturday, April 29 at the base of Florence Golf Links’ driveway holding a sign that said “PEDOPHILES OUT OF OUR SCHOOLS [sic]” in demonstration against “Fanny Rugburn’s Magical Queendom” a performance put on by Jason Wood, known when performing by his stage name Fanny Rugburn. The protestors identified themselves as a group of fascists from all over the northwest known as the Northwest Nationalist Network (3N). The protest continued until the conclusion of the second event with police remaining on site until the demonstrators departed.

However, there was a decrease in the percentage of homeless veterans, falling from 10 percent in 2022 to 7 percent in 2023. “The challenge with PIT in the past is that it has been a very brief snapshot of the real picture,” Bob Teter of Siuslaw Outreach Services said. “The point in time count only reflects the number of unhoused individuals that accessed services from a designated agency or had contact with someone with Lane County’s Outreach Team on a particular day.” He said that in 2023, agencies were able to get closer to the actual numbers than in previous years and estimated that about 200 unhoused people live in Florence year-round. As planned, the Miller Park Playground opened in August, bringing newer, safer equipment for kids to learn and play on. “Having a great playground allows children of all ages to explore, learn how to assess risks, try things out, discover them, and most importantly, learn through doing for all ages and abilities - that’s what this park is,” City of Florence Public Works Director Mike

Miller said during the ribbon cutting of the new playground area at Miller Park during this past Tuesday’s National Night Out celebration. “When we think about playgrounds and play structures, it’s about the adventure.” The ribbon cutting was attended by a host of City officials and employees, volunteers and civic organizations that helped make the new structure possible.

Sneddon said the application has recently changed to serve K-8 students. Following some procedural discussion, the Board voted 5 to 1, with director Katie Sneddon absent, to accept the application. Miltenberger said her no vote was due to unanswered questions regarding religiosity within the proposed school. At the start of the discussion, Sneddon said the school would not be religious in nature. Following the surprise resignation by Dunes City Mayor Sheldon Meyer in August, two more City Council members also resigned in October, leaving three councilors and an acting mayor. Rory Hammond and Robert Orr resigned, citing family illness and personal conflicts, respectively. Council President Susan Snow served as interim mayor until Ed McGuire was sworn in on Nov.15.

Paul answered questions and chatted about everything from how he could still recall the smell of the dead whale after over 50 years and how others who were involved in the explosion have also lived with the enduring story. The appearance was part of the Nov. 12 anniversary of the date, which lives on in digital infamy online. One only need search “exploding whale” to find the original newscast. It would be hard to find anyone reading this who has seen more in their life than one Florence resident. Born Dec. 12, 1923, Betty Kimball had the seat of honor at Shorewood Senior Living in Florence for her 100th birthday party. However, she’s currently the youngest centenarian at the facility. Shorewood staff say another resident is looking forward to a 101rst birthday party soon. Two more residents have 100th birthdays in 2024. As of Dec. 19, weather in Florence is typical for this time of year and the forecast calls for on-and-off rain. The year 2024 may also see development of a Dollar General store near the 35th Street and US101 intersection, following the December approval by the Florence Planning Commission. Staff said the City Council will hold a public hearing on the application and the applicants can file for building permits once the appeal period has passed. Other housing and assisted living projects are underway or being considered. What does 2024 hold for Florence? We’ll just have to wait and see.

Ambrosio noted one 17-year-old who promised to return the favor and buy her a gift next year. “For a 17-year-old boy to say that to me was very heartwarming, she said. “Obviously, it’s meant a lot to him over the years.” Ambrosio said the Lions Club helped with much of the wrapping and donated backpacks for kids as well.

“For some of the kids, it was their first party and they didn’t know they could open them up,” she said. Nonetheless, kids appeared to have a good time and were grateful for the gifts. “A couple kids came over and [said] “I sneaked one open,” and they were so excited about what they got,” she said. “I got a lot of hugs.” When it was suggested that the presents may get placed under families’ trees and opened on Christmas, Ambrosio said, “That’s what I used to always encourage. A lot of people don’t have trees and don’t do it, so this party has been their everything.”

Discussion

Wanda said Michael goes above and beyond code requirements and builds homes to withstand special elements of the coastal climate. “Our homes are, for the most part, our own designs,” she said, noting that other area specialists assist in creating plans that blend into and enhance surroundings.

Developer William Johnson Construction wants to build 25 units of housing side by side that will look similar to this conceptual drawing included in plans. Commissioner Laurie Green said the proposed white garage doors clash with the muted shades of the rest of the design. “Not only can we paint the doors, we can give a different look on every garage door,” Michael Johnson said. Chair Young said she felt less subtle changes were needed on garage doors and windows,

which should be separated by pairs of units rather than each individual one. “We will do what it takes to make this fly,” he said. After discussion about how future tenants may use the yards and potential amenities, Michael said he would prefer to install a gazebo and a

low-maintenance bark or other durable surface down. After further discussion about facades, setbacks and recreational areas, commissioners chose to continue the discussion to Jan. 9 to allow applicants time to submit plans specific to the proposed changes.

Siuslaw will play Brookings-Harbor (2-5) at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27, at Harbor Lights Middle

The South Coast Train Club leader said the club currently has about 15 members. Many of the members share knowledge and resources with each other. The club is always open to welcoming new members, Brandt said. They meet on the second Monday of each month at 6

They´re called sneaker waves because they appear without warning, often surging high up on the beach with deadly force, and are impossible to predict. Sneaker waves also carry a large amount of sand that can saturate your clothes, weighing you down and making escape difficult if not impossible. How to play it safe: Never turn your back on the ocean.

WATCH THOSE LOGS

The ocean is strong enough to pick up even the biggest log and plop it down on top of you. Some logs may look small, but even the tiny ones can be waterlogged and weigh tons. How to play it safe: If you see a log in the surf or on wet sand, stay off it.

RIP CURRENTS

Rip currents are strong currents of water that rush out to sea. They are stronger than even the best swimmer. These currents can swiftly sweep unwary beachcombers and waders off their feet and out to sea. Rip currents may appear as dark, choppy water. Any time you see debris and foam floating out to sea, chances are you have found a rip current. Avoid the area. How to play it safe: Parents keep your kids close when playing in the ocean. If caught in a rip current, don’t panic . Swim parallel to the beach until you are out of the current, then head for the beach.

The federal government will plunk down more than a half-billion dollars to help

cover the cost of replacing the Interstate 5 bridge across the Columbia River, between Washington and Oregon. A grant of $600 million will go to the Interstate Bridge Replacement Program, the entity overseeing the effort. It’s the first sizable commitment of federal funding to what is one of the most significant infrastructure projects pending in the region and along the West Coast. Three Washington Democratic lawmakers — U.S. Sens. Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray, and U.S. Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, whose district is on the

Washington side of the bridge – announced the grant award on Friday. There’s still a long road ahead to getting the bridge fully funded and built. The award will cover about 8% to 12% of the estimated $5 billion to $7.5 billion total expense of replacing the bridge. One of the bridge’s two spans is over a century old, the other about 65 years old, and the entire bridge is at risk of collapse in a major earthquake. Work is already underway in areas like environmental evaluation, toll planning, and design. Construction is

Assume that all cliff edges are unstable. Wet trails or soft sand and earth can make for unstable footing. Rocks can be slippery even when it isn’t raining. Standing at the base of an Oceanside cliff can be dangerous, especially if it has an overhang. In some places, winter storms and high waves have eroded the shoreline, increasing the chance of collapse and slides. How to play it safe: Beware of falling rocks, and don´t climb on bluffs and eroding hillsides. Don´t walk along the base of cliffs unless absolutely necessary.

anticipated to begin in late 2025 and to last until 2032. Nearly 132,000 vehicles, on average, traveled across the bridge each weekday in 2021, according to the Southwest Washington Regional Transportation Council. The grant dollars are from the federal Mega Grant Program, which funnels money to complex regional projects. Washington and Oregon have both committed about $1 billion to the bridge replacement and anticipate tolls will generate between $1.1 billion and $1.6 billion. Paying for the bridge has been a hot topic in Oregon, with Gov. Tina Kotek asking the Legislature to limit bond funding for the project to pay for other priorities, like housing. This session, amid an uproar by climate activists over funding a large transportation project, lawmakers called on the state to issue $250 million in bonds in each of the next four two-year budget cycles as Oregon’s down payment on its portion. Lawmakers said the remaining $750 million may end up coming from other sources, with the state planning a major transportation funding package in 2025. Oregon Democratic leaders, U.S. Sens. Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley, Gov. Tina Kotek and U.S. Reps. Earl Blumenauer and Suzanne Bonamici welcomed the announcement, saying the project will be good for truckers and commuters while promoting safety by making the bridge seismically resilient. Blumenauer and Kotek added that the plans for light rail, with pedestrian and cycling lanes, will also help reduce emissions, something that activists reject. Discussions and planning around replacing the bridge have gone on for about 20 years. But in recent months, lawmakers and others have become more optimistic that the project is headed toward construction as funding and support in both states is shored up. Gluesenkamp Perez visited the bridge with White House infrastructure coordinator Mitch Landrieu in September to stress the importance of replacing it. On Friday, Gluesenkamp Perez’s office said Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, who visited southwest Washington in July, called to congratulate her on the grant. Cantwell and Murray both highlighted their efforts to press for federal support for the project over the years. Murray noted conversations she had about it dating back to 1992. Hoyle’s Bill to Restore Fairness for Siletz Tribe Passes U.S. House Last week, U.S. Representative Val Hoyle’s (OR-04) bill to restore fairness for the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians passed in the U.S. House of Representatives by voice vote. The legislation will provide the legal ability for the Siletz and the state of Oregon to change a discriminatory legal clause that has severely limited the hunting, fishing, trapping, and gathering abilities of the Siletz. Senator Merkley leads the Senate version of the bill. “The Siletz Tribe never should have been forced to give up their sovereign right to hunt, fish, and gather on their ancestral lands,” said Rep. Hoyle. “We have a

responsibility to right this historic wrong and ensure the Siletz are treated as other Tribes are. As a new Member of Congress, I am grateful to have had the opportunity for this important bill to be my first standalone bill to pass in the House. I hope the Senate will move it forward as soon as possible so it can become a law.” “I want to thank Rep.
