Florence celebrates the exploding whale By TONY REED Siuslaw News

In an event likely hampered by the rain, dozens of people came together in Florence Nov. 10 to remember and celebrate one of the most unusual events to happen on the west coast, when the Oregon Highway Division used dynamite in an attempt to disintegrate a dead whale near Florence’s south jetty. Despite threatening early morning downpours, the 19th annual Veterans Day Parade launched as planned to travel through the streets of historic Old Town Florence on Monday, November 11th to sunny skies. The streets were adorned by the American flag compliments of Florence Kiwanis Club. A steady stream of people came out in the rain Nov. 10 to check out the folding house recently acquired and set up by First Step Florence. The small house now sits on the property next to the Presbyterian Community Church off Highway 101.
