Mapleton gives parents choice in state testing By RODNEY HARWOOD Country Media

MAPLETON – The Mapleton School District is offering students and parents an option - a state and federally mandated standardized test by the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium. In March of 2023, the Mapleton School District school board approved a resolution Supporting the Opt-Out Option for Smarter Balanced Testing, giving local parents the option to decline the national testing in favor of localized student assessment. The Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium is a team of states — including Oregon — working

to voluntarily to develop K-12 assessments in English language arts/literacy and math called Smarter Balanced. The tests, according to the website, are aligned to the Common Core State Standards and accurately measure student progress toward college and career readiness. The Mapleton School District school board disagrees with the nationalized testing for its district, which has an enrollment of 165 students. The Opt-Out Resolution states, “It is therefore the Board’s recommendation that Mapleton parents and guardians strongly consider exercising their right, under House Bill 2655, to opt out their student from the Smarter Balanced tests.” Mapleton school Su-

What is Work Ethic?

I have been working in a job since I was 14 years old, and I will soon be 70. I am still working for a limited amount of time in a part time position. I enjoyed the work very much for the most part. In my working years, I have worked with people who are punctual, manage their time well, and accomplish their goals each day. People who can prioritize time and have high productivity to show for it. Those with initiative and self-discipline to fin-

falls on anyone else. They project this negativity on others. Poor communication skills, and no listening skills either. They often do not respond to their emails or texts at all or in a timely manner. Procrastination is a constant problem and affects the work negatively. Disorganization and missed deadlines, loses important information due to the disorganized ways. Late to meetings or a no show is not a new thing. Not a team player, does no work to build relationships unless it is self-serving. Poor nonverbal communication as evidenced by body language and no eye contact or smiling is rare. They are distracted by anything and everything, poor manners,

Professionalism is a clearly seen thing, as you watch them work and listen to them as they interact with others. They are cooperative and like to be a part of a team atmosphere. They are pleasant and easy to be around. They know how to avoid distractions or get back on track quickly if distracted. They keep a positive state of mind, and this allows those around them to do the same. Then there are those that go about in a state of negativity and tend to blame their own short-

abuse of privileges, too many breaks at the work group’s expense, a poor attitude and lying. This is a subject I have been watching firsthand throughout my work life. It was as important then as it is now to have good examples in the workplace and good management is crucial to success. I hope I see less of the deterioration of good work ethics and good service to our workplaces. Whether you shop for groceries, go for personal services, or stop by your city services or utilities to get information or services. Good work ethics are noticed and appreciated. HOLY COW! HISTORY: Speaking of the Speaker… By J. Mark Powell InsideSources.com For the second time this year, Americans will be treated to the spectacle of watching the House of Representatives select a speaker. It isn’t always pretty, as January’s prolonged process demonstrated. However, the outcome is important because whoever ultimately emerges to lead the 435-member body will have a huge job on his or her hands. The House speaker is, after all, responsible for onehalf of one-third of the federal government. (Or 1/6th for math purists.) Yet, Americans don’t know much about the people who have wielded the gavel throughout history. You rarely see their faces on postage stamps, paper money or coins. Which is a shame, because there were some interesting characters among the 54 men and one woman who held the job over the last 234 years. Take Frederick Muhlenberg, for instance. A Lutheran pastor by profession, he felt a different calling during the Revolutionary War and added politics to his

portfolio. After serving in the Continental Congress and Pennsylvania’s legislature, he was elected to the brand-new U.S. Congress, becoming the House’s very first speaker on April 1, 1789. He later cast the deciding vote on the measure making the District of Columbia the infant nation’s capital. Muhlenberg is believed by some to be the person who insisted the chief executive be referred to with the simple “Mr. President” rather than the grander “His Elected Majesty” or “His High Mightiness” pushed by John Adams. (The historical evidence to back that claim is sketchy.) Either way, he served a second time as speaker and was so respected by his colleagues they named him the first Dean of the House of Representatives. (Currently held by Kentucky’s Hal Rogers, that honor goes to the longest-serving House member.) As the news media reminded us recently, Kevin McCarthy was the first speaker to lose the job in a no-confidence vote. But while his 269-day tenure was the shortest in 140 years, it is far from the shortest ever. That dis-

tinction belongs to New York Republican Theodore Pomeroy, who was elected to the position for just one day — March 3, 1869. Pomeroy’s term ended the very next day, and his colleagues gave him the job as a show of respect on his way out. A parting gift, if you will. Sam Rayburn was an entirely different story. A rough and tumble Texas Democrat, “Mr. Sam” held the gavel for 17 years, two months, and two days — the longest in history. (If you’ve been to Washington, the Rayburn House Office Building is named in his memory.) Though they weren’t 17 consecutive years, his speakership was served in three stints between 1940 and 1961, with Joe Martin taking over in 1947 and again in 1953 as control of the House pingponged between Democrats and Republicans. It became something of a running joke on Capitol Hill, with Rayburn saying, “Here you go, Joe,” as he handed the gavel to his GOP counterpart and Martin saying, “Take it, Sam,” when he handed it back. Speaking of Joe Martin … Ohio and Virginia each like to claim to be

the “Mother of Presidents,” but when it comes to House speakers, that title unequivocally belongs to Massachusetts. Martin was one of eight Bay Staters who held the position. You may think last January’s drawn-out drama when McCarthy was finally elected on the 15th ballot was one for the ages. And you would be wrong. Nathaniel Banks (from — where else? — Massachusetts) was chosen speaker in 1856 after 133 rounds of voting that dragged on for two months. (By the way, Banks changed political parties like the seasons during his speakership, moving from the Democratic to the American Party, and then on to the Republicans before finally settling in being an independent.) The youngster speaker was Robert M.T. Hunter of Virginia, elected at age 30 in 1839; the oldest was Illinois’ Henry Rainey, selected at 72 in 1933. Five died in office. Kentuckian Henry Clay and William Pennington of New Jersey were the only freshmen members ever elected speaker. James K. Polk was the first speaker to become president. And seven speakers — including Clay, Martin, Muhlenberg and Rayburn — were later re-elected for a second tenure. (The others being John W. Taylor, Thomas Reed and Nancy Pelosi.) WRIGHT from page 1A the change was in part due to a new speaker, but mostly due to the new members who understand working together is best for the state. “I think there was a different atmosphere of wanting to get things done and wanting to reach across the aisle.” Wright also said he noticed a change in Gov. Tina Kotek, who was often combative as House speaker. “I think she has to work with both side to get things done, and I think we as Republicans realize that and are willing to work with her,” Wright said. With the Legislature returning to Salem again in the coming months for the short session, Wright said he has his two bills ready to go.

“I feel very optimistic about what we can accomplish in the short session,” he said. As he looked back on the 2023 session, Wright said there was a lot accomplished. “We got some money for the port (in Coos Bay),” Wright said. “I was pleased we got some efforts forward in things like school safety. They were voted down, but we got them out there, and we can work together in the future.” While the state Senate was embroiled in controversy as Republican senators walked out and shut down progress, Wright said the House tried to stay out of it. “We stayed away from it,” Wright said. “That was their thing, and we did our thing. We stayed out of it.”

On the flip side, the Thompson brothers – Jeremy, Jerome Jr., Miles and Lyle – are telling Native American kids it’s OK to leave the rez, get and education and still be Indian too. Jeremy was the first in the Onondaga family to play NCAA Division I lacrosse and the first to sign a professional contract. Miles and Lyle were

co-Tewaaraton Award winners last year at the University of Albany and the first Natives to win the most prestigious award in college lacrosse. All four brothers made a significant impact last summer at the Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Championship as members of the Iroquois Nationals, meeting and signing autographs with Natives from around the country. They have since developed the Thompson Brothers Lacrosse Camp to teach “The Creator’s Game.” The question arises, “Do Indian people need Indian role models?” The Siuslaw News asked American Indian Athletic Hall of Famers Billy Mills (Lakota), Sonny Sixkiller (Cherokee), Jim Warne (Lakota), along with Notah Begay III, the first Native to play on the PGA Tour, and Haskell Indian Nations

University record-holder Wade McGee (Cherokee) to weigh in on the topic. “I remember reading about Billy Mills winning the Olympic 10,000 meters and thinking - ‘Wow’ he’s Indian. I was proud, but it didn’t inspire me to go out and run a 10,000-meter race,” Sixkiller said with a laugh. McGee holds fast to the ideal that other demographics across nation are not like Indian Country. “I used to spend a lot of time in the American Indian Athletic Hall of Fame when I was at Haskell (Indian Nations University). I hoped one day I’d be in there,” said McGee, who was the leading NJCAA rusher in the nation and national scoring leader in 1992. “I think Indian kids do need Indian role models. We’re not like anybody else in the United States. We have an identity. We have a culture. Even our language is different. We’re unique in that our people come from this land, so we can be here today and that’s how my wife and I teach our kids.” Mills won the Olympic gold medal in Tokyo in 1964. Sixkiller (1970-72) racked up 385 completions, 5,496 yards and 35 touchdowns and set 15 school records in three years at Washington University. Warne played on the Arizona State football team that won the Rose Bowl in 1987. Begay was on the Stanford golf team that won a NCAA national championship and won four times on the PGA Tour. McGee holds seven rushing records at Haskell, including an eye-popping 9.8 yards per carry average his sophomore season. “I definitely believe Indian kids need Indian role models,” said Mills, who was inducted into the American Indian Hall of Fame in 1978. “A young person growing up in an urban setting, who is very in tune with his culture, looks toward to role models for reassurance. There are the children on the reservations that are well aware of how difficult it is to leave to go to school. “I have gone to 108 different countries at this stage in my life, and yet the greatest culture shock I ever experienced was

leaving (Pine Ridge) reservation for the first time to go to Haskell. As I look back, I experienced more shock going from Pine Ridge to Lawrence, Kansas than any of the other countries I’ve gone to.” Warne had his story told in Sports Illustrated story in an article called “Urban Indian.” “I grew up in the city, but my mother, who was raised on Pine Ridge, always told me ‘You better act Lakota,’” said Warne, who was inducted into the American Indian Hall of Fame in 2004. “I think it’s good for Indian kids have to have Indian role models, because they have that identification. Billy Mills is someone I could identify with because he’s from Pine Ridge. “I remember thinking, ‘Wow, if he can do it, maybe I can too.’ I got countless letters from people after the Rose Bowl saying they had watched me play and how important it was for them to see someone from Indian Country in such a big game. I had no idea how important it was to them. So, I think it helps to have some folks from your own culture out they’re doing things that we can look up to.” Begay, 42, became the first Native to join the PGA Tour in 1995. He opened the door for other Native American golfers. Jeff Curl of the Wintu Tribe of Northern California, Mohawk Jesse Smith and Gene Webster Jr, Navajo/Ojibwe have made their way onto the PGA Tour. Women have joined professional circuits. Northern Ute Alexandrea Schulte is on the Cactus Tour in Arizona. “Under ideal circumstances, it would be good for role models for our Indian kids to be Indian,” Begay said. “We’re more used to the stories of, ‘that person had a lot of talent, but they flunked out’ or ‘that person had a lot of talent, but they just didn’t make it.’ “I think (Schimmel sisters and the Thompson brothers) play an instrumental role in changing the mindset of our younger kids. They’re succeeding in the highest levels of competition. Guys like

me, the Schimmel sisters and the Thompson brothers are changing that.” With raising figures in drug addiction, teen suicide and high school dropout numbers going through the roof, some Native communities see college as the finish line. The 62-year-old Sixkiller tells young people education is still the answer. “I did go to college. I did play sports and I did all the right things in high school to get to that point. I knew what it took through hard work, staying in school and all those things have always been my message,” said Sixkiller, who was inducted into the American Indian Hall of Fame in 1987. “I just met with a bunch of kids from the West that were in Seattle for the Native Youth and Enrichment Program at Husky Stadium. It’s not like I’m a 30-year-old kid just out of the NFL talking to them. Forty years later, what I have to say is still a big thing to the local Indian communities, and that’s pretty amazing.” For Mills, once a teacher always a teacher. He was in Colorado for the World Lacrosse Championships and had a chance to talk with the Iroquois National team during a rain delay in their poolplay match with Australia. During his gold-medal feat, Mills had chased down world record holder Ron Clarke of Australia during his historic feat in 1964. He reminded the Iroquois that the Australians can be beaten. “I really enjoyed the time I spent with them. I found they were intrigued that I had set a world record,” Mills explained. “I held seven American records and a world record on two separate occasions – here it is 50 years later and it’s still considered one of the greatest upsets in Olympic history. “They were very respectful. I told them I would have loved to be able to play on an all-Native American team for a world championship. Looking at their expressions I could see them thinking, ‘Wow, that’s what we’re doing now.’”

In historic decision, LCC board integrates student representation at meetings The Lane Community College (LCC) Board of Education has taken a pivotal step towards ensuring student voices are represented at the highest levels of decision-making within the institution. At its October 4th meeting, the Board approved Board Policy 2015, Student Representation, which affirms the inclusion of the LCC Student Government Association (SGA) President as an ex-officio, non-voting member at all regularly-scheduled monthly Board meetings. According to the new

policy, the SGA President will actively participate in Board discussions, be copied on all pertinent Board notices, agendas, and materials, and will deliver the student report at Board meetings. However, they will not vote, partake in executive sessions, nor be counted for quorum purposes. Additionally, amendments were made to Board Policy 370 (Membership on the Board of Education) and Board Policy 2330 (Quorum and Voting) to implement the provisions of the new policy effectively.

Board Chair Austin Folnagy, who introduced the proposal, expressed his enthusiasm for the decision, stating, “Having witnessed firsthand the immense value of student representation during my tenure at the Klamath Community College Board of Education, I believe this move not only bridges a vital gap between the Board and our student community but also heralds a more inclusive and forward-thinking future for LCC.” LCC President Stephanie Bulger added, “This is a momentous occasion

for LCC. With the inclusion of student representation, we are reinforcing our commitment to inclusivity, transparency, and the importance of student voices in shaping the future of our college.” Oregon statute defines voting membership for community college boards, however individual boards retain the authority to add ex-officio, non-voting members. The new policy takes effect immediately; SGA President Sawyer Smith will join the board in the new position at the November 1st meeting.

Contributed photos By RODNEY HARWOOD Country Media KENT, Wash. – As America settles in to see how the Major League Baseball playoffs play out over the following weeks, everybody tends to watch or see things a little bit differently. That’s especially true if you play the game for a living former Siuslaw High School/ Oregon State standout Jake Thompson said. The 6-foot1 righthander was a fourthround selection in the 2017 MLB June amateur draft and was at one time ranked as the No. 24 prospect in the Red Sox minor-league system in the most-recent MLB.com prospect watch.

“I did like the Rays chances, but they got swept by the Rangers. So, I might be on the Rangers bandwagon now,” Thompson said in a telephone inter from Kent, Wash., where he’s working out with Driveline Baseball, the world’s best data-driven baseball player development program. “When I watch (baseball on television), I pay attention to the relievers, because that is what I do. I like the pitch choice and why they throw them in certain situations. How do they set them up or why did this guy swing at it or why did this guy take a fastball right down the middle … stuff like that.” Tools of the trade, learning which tool is best for which

job, he said. Like a salesman learning a mentor or how to get the most out of a machine. “There’s lot of mind games that go along with pitching. I know why it took that pitch. I know why he swung at that,” said Thompson, who compiled a career record of eight wins and 18 losses with a 4.66 ERA in his 100-game pitching career with the Lowell Spinners, Salem Red Sox, Portland (Maine) Sea Dogs, Greenville Drive and Worcester Red Sox. Thompson spent numerous seasons in the Boston Red Sox organization, but recent struggles with the WooSox this year turned out to be his last. He posted a 5.40 ERA with a 6-5 strikeout-to-walk ratio and .349 batting average against in

10 innings at the Triple-A level. The 29-year-old righthander immediately signed a free agent contract with the Philadelphia Phillies in June, where he finished out the summer pitching for the Double-A Reading (Penn.) Fightin’ Phils. It’s business, he said, and one-time top recruit in Oregon is working on his game in Washington state to get another shot at a Pro Day he hopes to parlay into a second chance with another franchise. “My experience with the Red Sox was good, for the most part,” he said. “It was bittersweet toward the end, getting released. The split leaves the Vikings with a 6-3 overall record and a 3-2 mark in the Mountain Valley Conference. Siuslaw opened play last week at Creswell and struggled defensively covering long throw ins. East Linn actually jumped out to the early lead on a breakaway, but once the Vikings settled down, they began to control the game. Siuslaw the lead for good when chest trapped a pass, turned and fired a shot that evaded two defenders and the keeper. In the second half, Siuslaw dominated play with 15 shots and six goals recorded. Borgnino scored his first varsity goal on a strong shot from outside the penalty box. Nelson added a highlight reel goal with a beautiful turning shot that he buried in the far post. Vanduch scored on a tight angle, far post shot and touched in a couple more from inside of the goal area. Kale Jensen, Linton, Joel, Ramil Beers and Noah Gonzalez all played strong defensive games to keep East Linn at bay.

Mapleton Volleyball splits pair of league matches By RODNEY HARWOOD Country Media MARCOLA – The Mapleton Sailors split last week in 1A-3 Mountain West League volleyball action, falling in three sets to league-leading Mohawk on Oct. 5, while beating Siletz Valley on Oct. 3 for their third win in the past six matches. The Sailors (6-16, 5-10 in 1A-3 Mountain West League) go into the final week of the regular season in sixth place in the Mountain West League. Oct. 5 No. 24-ranked Mohawk (13-5, 10-2) moved up into the 1A-3 Mountain West League top spot with a 3-0 victory over Mapleton. Mapleton junior Morgan Milbrett had four aces, three kills, and two assists. Circles in the Sand comes to Florence

By BREE LAUGHLIN Country Media Circles in the Sand meandering labyrinths have become a part of Bandon, Oregon’s identity. This weekend, Denny Dyke and his team of artists are bringing the family-friendly pastime to Florence. This will be the sixth year Circles in the Sand has popped up on the beach in Florence. The draw will take place on Saturday, Oct. 14 – the same day as the eclipse. The drawing starts at 3 p.m. and will be open to walk through at 5 p.m. in front of the Driftwood Shores Resort. The intention of Circles in the Sand is to share love, joy and kindness by creating walkable art in the form of “dreamfield” labyrinths on the beach. When completed, the labyrinths are one continuous path with no dead ends or wrong turns. Denny Dyke began drawing circles in the sand in the Bandon area more than a decade ago. It started mainly as a meditation, he said, and “to see if I could draw some of the patterns.” Throughout the years, Dyke’s beach artistry has attracted larger and larger audiences. He turned Circles in The Sand into a business in 2015 and now collaborates with a team of artists and volunteers who work deftly to create a flowing maze of circles and meandering patterns throughout the beach at Face Rock Viewpoint. People come from all over Oregon, the United States and the world to walk the labyrinths. “We now have hundreds of people coming down to have a fantastic
