Cowan campaign signs destroyed By David Hayes The Triplicate
This is Lori Cowan’s fifth political run for public office. While used to the slings and arrows of the typical campaign, Cowan said she’s never been maliciously targeted until nearly 50 of her signs were stolen and destroyed Tuesday, Sept. 22. “They signs were ripped, torn, cut up with scissors and discarded,” Cowan said. “I don’t know where most of them ended up. But this was intentional. Someone went out with specific intentions of targeting me.”
Cowan, the incumbent for the runoff election for the Del Norte County District 2 Board of Supervisors against Valerie Starkey, said the news of the thefts quickly escalated between meetings. “I got a phone call from a supporter who said a sign was gone. This happened in the primaries, someone messing around then, too,” Cowan said. “By the time I got out of closed session, I realized this was more than one sign.” Cowan’s phone was lit up with messages informing her all her signs around town had been
removed and some discarded at the end of 5th Street. She said someone even got past an electric fence to access a sign on the McNamara Ranch near Pebble Beach Drive. Cowan added that the only big, vinyl signs that survived were the ones in high-traffic areas near Walmart on Washington Boulevard and Burger King on Highway 101. “I drove around, saw the damage, and broke down and cried,” Cowan said. “I like to think I’m a strong person, but this is a personal attack.” It is also against the law. Fire was hours from reaching Gasquet

The Del Norte County Supervisors learned Tuesday just how touch and go the evacuation was for residents of Gasquet Sept. 9. Jeff Marszal, Gasquet district ranger for the Six Rivers National Forest, said officials feared the Slater Fire might have reached that community by noon the day its residents were told to leave their homes. As of Sept. 22, residents in Gasquet and Big Flat are at a Level 1 “be ready” evacuation order Marszal said, adding he expects those orders to be lifted soon. “I’m meeting with the Del Norte County sheriff and fire management officials,” he said. “We’ll probably be lifting that Level 1 considering where we are in the fire.” Marszal informed the Supervisors the Slater Fire started near
Happy Camp on Sept. 8 and burned about 15 miles into Del Norte County by the morning of Sept. 9. It then crossed the Oregon state line, moved along U.S. Highway 199 and entered the Smith River National Recreation Area near Collier Tunnel. Marszal said this prompted emergency officials to evacuate Gasquet at about 6 a.m. Caltrans would also close Highway 199 from Gasquet to the Oregon border as they removed fallen trees and debris near Collier Tunnel. Highway 199 later reopened Sept. 19. Marszal said the fire fortunately hasn’t reached Gasquet. He explained that when the fire entered Del Norte County it got caught up on the Oregon Mountain Road and Knopki Creek areas and has not moved. All available fire resources are concentrated on the Knopki Road area in the south side of the fire.
The Northern Rockies Incident Management Team 2 is now managing the fire’s northwest corner, which includes the California and Oregon sides of U.S. Highway 199. Marszal said on the opposite side of Highway 199, firefighters used dozers to try to contain the fire near Monkey Ridge, protecting transmission lines and a nearby communications site. It has destroyed more than 150 homes in the Happy Camp area and claimed the lives of two people there. In Del Norte County, the fire destroyed two homes on the north side of the tunnel, but the Collier Tunnel Rest Area and the agricultural station were spared from the flames. “This was an extreme fire event,” Marszal said. “It was driven by extreme wind, heat and historically dry fuels. It was a terrible 24 hours for Happy Camp — I used to live there.” According to InciWeb.nwcg.
gov/incident/7173, as of Sept. 23, the Slater Fire remains at about 150,230 acres and is now 24 percent contained. The Devil Fire, which sprang up nearby to the east of the Slater Fire, sits at 7,784 acres and is 18 percent contained. Marszal broke down the amount of area burned by the Slater fire: — 75,000 acres in the Klamath National Forest — 55,000 acres in the Rogue River Siskiyou National Forrest — 12,000 acres on private land, including 5,000 acres belonging to Green Diamond Resource Company — 2,000 acres belonging to the Bureau of Land Management — 4,186 acres in the Smith River National Recreational Area “Because of the unprecedented nature of this fire season up and down the Pacific Coast, we’ve struggled with getting resources

Christine Slette figures the COVID-19 pandemic has really hurt operating funds for Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) Del Norte this year, especially when trying to find a steady stream of volunteers. “Us doing outreach and being able to keep doing that in the community is only based off us having money to do that,” said Slette, now in her 12th year as executive director with the nonprofit. “We’ve worked really hard to do branding and outreach because we have funds. Then like one or two years we have no money.” This is one of the years they’ve gone without. Slette said due to the pandemic, all of their fundraisers for 2020 had to be cancelled, including the Annual Chip in for Kids Golf Tournament, The Chrystal Ball black tie event, the Labor Day Bash at SeaQuake and the Del Norte County Fair Concert. “That’s a good $50,000 to $80,000 that we are not going to be getting this year,” Slette said. Plus, she’s unable to go out and host outreach booths, such as the Family Fair or the Health Hair. But not all is lost in their coffers. “What’s cool is we keep getting random checks, like from Rumiano Cheese or Beth Wilds who was on our board, but now lives in Texas and sent us $200,” Slette said. Then she learned the Pelican Bay Athletic Organization chose CASA as its charity of choice to assist this year. The PBAO is a grassroots organization of Pelican Bay employees, officers and staff with the main goal to give back to youth athletics in the community. This year, the PBAO joined with Pelican Bay food sales program. The program involves inmates by allowed them to order items they wouldn’t normally be able to purchase, mostly from Fred Meyer stores. Food sales for the drive last year raised between $30,000 and $40,000. The PBAO receives a portion of the net sales for its charity donations. “I’m just really happy that they think so highly of the program and want to help support foster kids,” Slette said. However, organizers kept secret until the day of the check presentation how much they supported the program. Jim Holt, PBAO president, said this year was the most the organization had ever raised. Fort Dick, California to Albert E. and Maude L. McKay, and died on September 13, 2020 at Baldwin Health and Rehab in Baldwin, Kansas. Prior to this, she had been residing in Gardner, Kansas with her son. Beverly is survived by her sister, Bertie, her son, Don Smith and wife, Jill, her daughter, Reta Willis and husband, Arnie. She had grand-children; Tim and Tom Smith, Jeremy Willis and Jennifer Webster. She had 10 great grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchil-

dren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, William H. Smith. Beverly was a well-known member of the Foursquare Church. She taught herself how to play the piano at age 13 while she was home sick with heart trouble. She played the piano and organ at the church for over 50 years. The service will be held in the Foursquare Church Gymnasium at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, September 30, 2020.

Charles E. Wetherell, Jr. of Cheyenne, Wyoming passed away on August 21, 2020. He was born August 14, 1938 in Berkeley, California, to Helen and Charles Wetherell
and moved to Fort Dick, California when he was 6. Chuck/Charlie was raised on the Wetherell family dairy ranch in northern California. Chuck is survived by his wife, Paula, of Cheyenne; two daughters, Jennifer Shinn (Gerik) of Mount Vernon, Washington and Mary Wetherell of Medford, Oregon and three step-children: Kimberley (Dr. Robert) Marshall of Wheatland, Wyoming, Terri Hartness of Cheyenne, Wyoming and Glen Hartness of Round Rock, Texas. After graduating from Del Norte High School in Crescent City, California, Chuck attended Menlo Junior College. He received an Associate Degree before entering the United States Navy as a pilot flying on aircraft carriers from 1960 – 1965. He then went to work as a pilot for Delta Airlines retiring after 32 years. Chuck spent many of those years based at Dallas-Fort Worth Airport and lived in Weatherford, Texas. There he had the pleasure of being a member of the Parker County Sheriff’s Posse for many years and serving a year as rodeo chairman. Chuck loved camping, hunting, skiing, and fishing, but his true love was being on his boat, Aquila, cruising around the San Juan Islands, Washington, British Columbia and Alaska. A memorial gathering took place at Lakeview Chapel in Cheyenne, Wyoming on August 28, 2020 with another one to be held later in Fort Dick, California.
Opal Louise Freudenthal, 86, passed away at home, surrounded by her family, on September 19, 2020. Born in Arkansas on September 11, 1934, Opal moved to Smith River at the age of 18. There she met and married the love
of her life, Loren Freudenthal. They had four children which they raised in Smith River. Everyone who knew Opal knew the kind, loving person she was. She was passionate about spending time with her grandchildren. Opal loved gardening and could grow anything and took pride in her beautiful yard. She is preceded in death by her parents, late husband Loren, and son Robby. Surviving her are daughters Shelley Haynes, Diana Wallace (husband Jim), Dorothy Freudenthal and her loving nephew
David Robert Soule April 25, 1983 - Sept. 11, 2020
David Robert Soule died suddenly on the morning of September 11, 2020, from a massive heart-attack. David was born April 25, 1983 and was only 37 years old. David’s death stunned his family and his community, where he grew up and worked his adult life, leaving many to grieve his loss. He was a man who was always there to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He gave his time willingly; never expecting anything in return. David was considerate, loving and caring to his family, coworkers, and community. David attended local elementary schools and graduated from Del Norte High School in 2001. David started with Del Norte Ambulance in the Explorer Program at 14 years old and by 18 was officially hired as an EMT after obtaining his EMT license. David, now 18, was finally old enough to join Crescent Fire Protection District as a Volunteer Fireman, which was one way he could help his community and loved doing. He continued to volunteer throughout the rest of his life. David maintained his certification as an EMT throughout the years and renewed it as needed.
At the age of 21, David decided to attend a truck driving school because he wanted to learn how to drive a big rig like his Uncle George. After completing the course and receiving his license he was hired by Snoozie Shavings/Hambros and drove trucks for them on a full-time basis. David continued to take shifts at Del Norte Ambulance on his days off. While he loved driving trucks, he did not like long-distance hauling and decided to apply for a job as a Correctional Officer at Pelican Bay State Prison. He was accepted by the California Department of Corrections & Rehabilitation at the age of twenty-four. David’s first and only assignment was at Pelican Bay State Prison. David occasionally continued to work for Snoozie Shavings/Hambros and Del Norte Ambulance on a parttime basis on his days off. When those jobs went by the wayside, he would volunteer for overtime at the Prison. Three years ago, he accepted a part-time job at Hemmingson Contracting, driving multiple truck types and pieces of equipment. David leaves behind a large family network, who are not only deeply heartbroken, but are also just discovering how the many others with whom David shared his precious time and life. David leaves behind his loving wife, Nicole Soule and their children, Derek and Jocelynn; father and mother-in-law, Dr. Laurent Wanner D.C. and Linda; and Nicole’s siblings and David’s brothers-in-law,

Over the weekend, local volunteers with Reach Out WorldWide (ROWW), a California based non-profit founded by Paul Walker, met at the Eugene Airport to receive incoming donations and oversee distribution to various evacuee resource sites across the state, including the Evacuee Distribution Center at the Masonic Lodge in Eugene, the Lane County Public Health Department, Glide Revitalization, Cal-Ore Life Flight in Gold Beach, Living Waters Church in Medford, and more. Lynn’s Hope House of New Beginnings dissolves By Daphane Williams

People were in a bit of a panic because this new disease COVID-19 was threatening the lives of people. No social gatherings were allowed. Meetings were held on Zoom and other venues. We at Lynn’s Hope House of New Beginnings had to decide what to do. This was to be our first major fundraiser and we expected it to bring in at least $30,000. With that money, grant funding and individual donations it would be great. But that
didn’t happen. Also, our fifth year at the house was coming up, (an agreed upon time frame with the First Baptist Church with whom allowed us the use of the house) and decisions had to be made. The board convened and decided to at first postpone the fundraiser in hopes that the fairgrounds would open up but it didn’t, so the fundraiser was officially cancelled. With that and needing to determine what the future would be for LHHNB. It was decided that we would dissolve (close) the
nonprofit. May 31 was our last day at 1100 H Street. According to the IRS, as well as was written into our bylaws, that upon dissolving all assets must be donated to another 501(c)(3) nonprofit. It was decided that all of the furnishing would stay in the house and be donated to the First Baptist Church. Del Norte Mission Possible was given some hygiene products and a Taskalfa copier. Do I regret taking that leap of faith? Not at all. I would not have known if my venture would be a success or failure unless I
tried. A lot of lives will be forever changed. I know that my life will be forever changed because I had the opportunity to be a part of Lynn’s Hope House of New Beginnings transitional home for women leaving jail and prison and returning to the community. August 2020 would have been my 14th year as a volunteer minister at the Del Norte County jail. That also came to a halt due to COVID-19. We are not yet formally dissolved but are still in the process with the Attorney General’s Office and
Secretary of State, hopefully in the next month or so it will be completed. I would like to thank everyone who donated finances, time or items to LHHNB, you also have a part in helping change lives. I would like to mention Del Norte Mission Possible who helps homeless men, women, and families and who now occupies the house on 1100 H street that was formerly LHHNB and is used for homeless women with health issues transitioning into the community. Del Norte Mission Possible was blessed to be
able to move into a fully furnished house thanks to the First Baptist Church. Our blessings have become their blessings. Shoe Bank Takes a Permanent Hike The Triplicate The Community Shoe Bank will hold its final shoe bank on Oct. 3 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Brookings Elks Lodge, lower level. Along with free shoes, they also gives away socks and winter coats. “We have been operating for 10 years now, and it is time to close up,” said Linda Schreiber. “t has run its course. Attendance had dropped even before COVID, but now it is really low, even though we have set up outdoors. “I believe with chil-
dren not doing sports or attending school, and many persons working from home, the shoe need or priority has decreased. It is a lot of work to set up and take down, and my volunteers have dwindled, so it is time to close up. Previously during back to school days, the shoe bank has given out 40 to 50 pairs of shoes in a single day. Schreiber will continue to distribute shoes to other charities or services in the community that help those in need after Oct. 3.

However, Braillard added that while demand for visitor lodging was down overall in California by about 41 percent, in rural areas, including Del Norte County, hotel room demand was only down 17 percent according to data from Visit California, released Aug. 12. “This kind of goes along with what we already know, that people are looking to flee the bigger cities,” Braillard explained. “This data is directly reflecting that.”

Several adults were arrested and one sales clerk cited during an undercover alcohol sting Sept. 19 in Crescent City. The Crescent City Police Department worked with an agent from the California Department of Alcohol Beverage Control Sept. 19 to conduct a “minor decoy” and “shoulder tap” operation. Crescent City Police Chief Richard Griffen wrote on the department’s Facebook page during the operation, CCPD utilized an underage decoy to attempt purchases from Discount
Liquor, Wayside Liquor, Y Liquor and the Shell Gas Station. The minor decoy had valid identification with their actual date of birth. The only establishment that sold to the decoy was Discount Liquor at 1010 9th Street. The clerk who sold the alcohol to the minor was cited and released for violating of section 25658 (a) of the Business and Professions Code. Griffin said CCPD also utilized a minor to attempt shoulder tap operations at Wayside Liquor and Y Liquor stores. One arrest was made at each location during
this operation when an adult was asked to purchase alcohol for the minor and then completed the transaction. Each individual was then cited and released under 25658 (a) B&P as well. “We will be continuing these operations over the course of the year utilizing funding from the grant we received from ABC,” Griffin wrote. The Crescent City Police Department was recently awarded a $20,574 grant from the California Alcoholic Beverage Control o battle alcohol-related harm to the community.

Judge Richard Harper Retires - Long Serving Brookings Jurist The Triplicate Brookings Municipal Court Judge Richard Harper is retiring after 23 years of service. The Brookings City Council accepted his retirement resignation, which will be effective October 1 at their Sept. 14 meeting. “We thank Judge Harper for his service to our community,” Mayor Jake Pieper said. “We know that his service as judge has been a major part of his life for the last two decades, and we wish him well in adjusting to a real retirement.” Originally appointed by the City Council in 1997, Harper has adjudicated hundreds of Municipal Code and traffic violation cases over the years. The jurisdiction of the court was expanded to include traffic violations in 2013. In a hand-written note to Harper, Oregon Supreme Court Justice Martha L. Walters wrote: “I write to congratulate you on your years of service as a Municipal Judge. Our municipal courts are the closest to the people and your willingness to listen and decide have demonstrated that there is a system of justice in which they can believe. I was a City Attorney before I went on the bench – still a highlight for me,
as I hope your service has been.” Prior to serving as the part-time Brookings Judge, Harper retired from a law enforcement career in California, including working as Chief Investigator for the Del Norte County District Attorney’s office as an investigator with the Narcotics Task Force. “It is kind of ironic that I retired from the Los Angeles Police Department after 23 years and four months of service, and am now retiring as Brookings Judge after exactly the same number of years and months,” Harper noted. “It has been a wonderful experience serving as Municipal Judge for Brookings,” Harper said. “I love working with people, and feel that I have helped people resolve issues in a way that has improved their lives. “One of the most rewarding aspects has been to perform hundreds of marriages over the years, seeing and helping people start out on a new life together,” Harper said. “I have also worked with some residents through the court for a number of years... some starting as juveniles... to help them work their way through the consequences of making mistakes, and encouraging them to take
positive action in their lives. This has been very rewarding,” Harper said. “The experience in working with Brookings officials and staff has been good. There has never been any attempt by elected or appointed officials to influence any decision,” Harper noted. “And I think most people are satisfied that they received a fair hearing with a fair outcome when they leave the courtroom.” Harper completed the training now required of non-attorney Municipal Court Judges in Oregon at the National Judicial College. He is a member of the Oregon Municipal Judges Association. “I think I…and others who serve in similar roles across the state… have demonstrated over the years that a non-attorney with some judicial basic training can serve effectively in the role of Municipal Court Judge and serve the community well,” Harper concluded. The City Council appointed Judge Pro Tem and retired City Manager Gary Milliman to replace Harper as Municipal Court Judge effective October 2. SWOCF Tech Grant to Provide Laptops for Distance Learning The Triplicate Thanks to a $20,000 grant from the Southwest Oregon Children’s Foundation, students in Central Curry School District 1 will have access to the tools necessary to be successful while participating in the distance learning model this fall. The grant will provide funding to purchase 30 new laptops that will be distributed to students who do not have access to a device at home. “Southwest Oregon Children’s Foundation was founded to make sure that local youth have all the tools and resources necessary to receive a well-rounded education,” said SWOCF Board President Tim Tuttle. “We believe that supporting our young people through this unprecedented time is of the utmost importance to ensure that no children are left behind due to circumstances beyond their control. Tansy Games winner disposes of 7 tons By David Hayes The Triplicate
In the second annual Tansy Games, Volunteer Campaign Coordinator Janet Gilbert was hoping to top last year’s total where teams removed the noxious weed from open county spaces. Last year’s 16 teams disposed of an impressive 9,960 pounds of the tansy ragwort which can be lethal to cattle, horses and other livestock. However, last year’s total didn’t include the efforts of Denny Haddad. Due to a miscommunication at the Del Norte Transfer Station where the tansy ragwort is disposed, Haddad did not add his efforts to the total. But he has long taken it upon himself to remove the noxious weed from public spaces and didn’t need the motivation of prize money. “Tansy is a plague to the whole county,” Haddad said. Gilbert explained that Del Norte County actually has an ordinance making property owners responsible to manage the noxious weed’s growth and to keep it 150 feet away from all property borders. “The noxious weed is originally from Western Europe,” Gilbert said. “With its pretty yellow flowers, most people don’t know it is a toxic weed.”

Stalks of tansy ragwort missed during the Tansy Games 2020 still litter fields around Del Norte County. That’s why she devised the Tansy Games to educate the public on how it an “attractive nuisance” that you don’t want to keep. “It’s so ubiquitous, instead of the county spending all day writing up violations, we could write about its side effects to livestock,” Gilbert said. Animals can actually develop a taste for the tansy ragwort, which has an accumulative effect, Gilbert explained.
“It cannot process in their liver, causing liver toxicity. That’s why it’s also called staggerwort. Because they look drunk, eventually can’t walk and finally collapse,” she said. The other problem with tansy ragwort is it has a wind-blown seed that can take it easily from one property to the next or into public or recreation lands, Gilbert added. Now in his 70s, Haddad can look at parks today and remember back de-
cades when they held no tansy wort. So, he wasn’t going to miss out contributing to its removal this year. The other 16 teams crushed last year’s total, removing 14,920 pounds of the weed. Gilbert was pleasantly surprised by the first runner up’s total of 3,000 pounds. However, combined, they all barely beat Haddad. Haddad, by himself, hauled in 14,540 pounds — 7.72 tons — of tansy
ragwort. “I did it all over the county,” he said. “There’s some big ranches out Warhead Road, some that are 50 acres. Some I didn’t even ask permission. I’d just fill up my truck. I don’t how many times I filled it.” Not asking permission first nearly got him in trouble when Haddad started yanking out the tansy ragwort along Lake Earl Drive, right in front of the Pelican Bay State

Refunding tag fees and restoring preference points is the least we can do for this group that does so much to fund our scientific research and conservation of these iconic California species.” The proposed change to the California Code of Regulations must be approved by the California Fish and Game Commission. On Sept. 17, the Commission’s Wildlife Resources Committee approved the proposed regulation concept, which is expected to be taken up by the full Commission in December and if approved, would go into
effect in April 2021. The proposed regulation identifies 14 elk hunts and two pronghorn hunts whose tag holders would be eligible for a refund of tag fees and a restoration of their preference points after submitting their unused tag along with a signed statement that they were unable to hunt for the entire season or a significant portion of the season due to the statewide closure of national forests and other affected lands as a result of the September 2020 wildfires. But he did go to the county just to make sure. “They said you can do whatever you want,” he said. After each team turns in their tansy ragwort, Gilbert said it is hauled to and buried in a landfill in Central Oregon where it cannot recover in the warmer climate. Led by Haddad, who received a $500 grand prize from a pool of money contributed by outside donors, Gilbert was extremely pleased by the 2020 results. “This cohort of team players did a fabulous job with almost three times as the first time. CDFW seeks authority to refund elk, pronghorn tags for areas impacted by wildfires, forest closures The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) is pursuing a regulation change that would allow elk and pronghorn (antelope) hunters whose seasons were cut short or eliminated due to wildfires and forest closures to receive a refund of their 2020 tag fees along with a restoration of their preference points used to acquire their tags. Eligible hunters would also receive an additional preference point for elk or pronghorn for the 2020 season. “We need to do right by these hunters who have lost most if not all of their hunting opportunity in 2020 due to these unprecedented forest closures and wildfires,” said CDFW Director Charlton
premium deer tags may be returned to CDFW with a request to have preference points reinstated and one preference point awarded for the species for the current hunt year prior to the season opening. Tag return and preference point eligibility requirements and additional information is available on CDFW’s website. Application and processing fees would not be eligible for refunds. Hunting license fees similarly cannot be refunded.

Publish: Sept 25, October 2, 9, 2020 P296963 NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING Crescent Fire Protection District Proposed Fire Protection and Emergency Response Services Benefit Assessment NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that a public hearing before the Board of Commissioners of the Crescent Fire Protection District (CFPD) will be held on Monday, October 12, 2020, at 5:00pm, at the Washington Station, 255 West Washington Boulevard, Crescent City, CA 95531. The public hearing marks the end of the voting period for the Proposed Fire Protection and Emergency Response Services Benefit Assessment which would fund the services and improvements included in the Department’s 10-year Financial Master Plan. In recent years, funding has been inadequate to maintain volunteer department services with the staffing needed to keep up with the increase in calls and needs of the community. In absence of additional funding, it is estimated that the CFPD would exhaust its limited reserve funds within a 2-3 year period while trying to maintain the current level of service that residents have come to expect. The increased funding to CFPD would be used to equip and train volunteers, replace aging fire engines and lifesaving emergency and rescue equipment, hire 3 fire captains to sustain 24-hour response coverage, and develop and maintain a 24-hour volunteer staffing program (known as a sleeper program) enabling volunteer personnel to respond quicker to fire and emergency rescue calls. The proposed assessment rate for a single-family benefit unit is $74.00 per year, or $6.17 per month. This new assessment would replace the 2006 assessment and would be in addition to the 1987 assessment for a total single-family equivalent benefit unit of $98.00 annually. The total estimated amount assessed to the entire area subject to this assessment would be approximately $433,746 dollars per year beginning in fiscal year 2022. The assessment requires majority approval by property owners, with ballots weighted based on the relative special benefit to a property in relation to a single-family home, the type of property, and its size. The total proposed amount of assessment for your property is shown on your ballot. Individuals who own more than one property within CFPD will receive one ballot for each property. Each ballot is weighted by the amount of the assessment it represents. To be counted, mail-in assessment ballots MUST be received by the close of the public hearing on October 12, 2020 and in-person ballots MUST be received by 5:00 pm on October 12, 2020 at the Washington Station. There is also a secure drop box available at the Washington Station for those wishing to drop off your ballot prior to the hearing. If you lose your ballot, require a replacement ballot, or want to change your vote, call the Crescent Fire Protection District at (707) 464-2421. You are invited to attend, but not required to attend, the public hearing. The meeting agenda will be posted on the Commission’s website www.crescentcity.org/CFPD at least 72 hours before the scheduled start time of the meeting. DEAR ABBY: I got married to a wonderful guy 14 years ago, but after a year of marriage, our children (his 10-year-old and my 12- and 13-year-olds) couldn’t stand one another and caused a lot of problems. I was brokenhearted when he gave me divorce papers. I moved out but continued to date him without our kids around. Seven years ago, after his son moved out, I moved back in, but he won’t ask me to remarry him. My kids get along fine with him, but his son hates me and refuses to come to any holiday or birthday celebration that I host. Should I move out and move on? I feel like I have wasted 14 years of my life. -- HOPELESS IN OHIO
DEAR HOPELESS: I wish you had mentioned why this “wonderful guy’s” son hates you. Could it be he blames you for the failure of his parents’ marriage, or was it something else? That this man has allowed his son to dictate how the two of you will spend your lives is very sad. Unless you can accept living with the status quo (which has to be painful), the answer to your question is: Move on. **** DEAR ABBY: In 2014, I loaned a family friend $5,000. At
the time, and ever since, I never asked the reason for the loan. Over time we lost touch. However, we recently reconnected and decided to go on a road/camping trip throughout the West. Three days in, we both realized it was a poor idea to travel together for an extended period of time. He has now become quite nasty and speaks ill of me. Should I write and request payment of the loan or let it go? -OUT OF POCKET IN VEGAS DEAR OUT OF POCKET: If you had the forethought to put IN WRITING the fact you were lending this person money, you have a prayer of having the loan repaid. If you didn’t, you can try writing to this family (former) friend, but legally it won’t be worth the paper your letter is written on. If that’s the case, consider this an expensive lesson.
