Police use tasers to subdue two suspects By David Rupkalvis The Triplicate
Crescent City police were forced to use tasers twice in two days to control suspects who refused to cooperate with police. Crescent City Police Chief Richard Griffin shared the details of the events, saying officers had
to escalate to tasers when the different suspects resisted. On September 3, two officers and a K-9 officer responded to Safeway just before 9 p.m. to a report of a theft. When they arrived, Officer Tyler Balch contacted Steffen Dacquisto, 30, and attempted to detain him. Dacquisto refused to listen
to Balch’s verbal command and became aggressive. When Balch tried to handcuff him, Dacquisto pulled back, made his hands into a fist and took a fighting stance. Balch pulled his taser and held Dacquisto before again attempting to handcuff him. For a second time, Dacquisto resisted and began fighting
Balch. Sgt. Anthony Lopez then deployed his taser and Dacquisto was taken into custody. Dacquisto was taken to the hospital and later booked on charges of shoplifting and resisting an executive officer with force. Lt. Kai, the department’s K-9 officer, was at the scene, but did not need to be used.
The very next day, police received a call just before 4 p.m. about a possible burglary in progress at a business in the 200 block of Highway 101. Officer Alex Pearson and Sgt. Edward Wilson responded to the scene and found David Schumack, 35, inside a shed on the property.

Zac’s Hopefest to lift family of paralyzed surfer Special for The Triplicate Hope. It is what drives all of us. Especially in seasons of great adversity. Nine months ago, Zachary Abblitt was a thriving 18 year old, just having graduated from high school, active with cross country running, biking,
surfing, swimming, working out in the gym, playing the piano and bass guitar… until a miscalculated dive into the Brookings harbor ocean on November 20 broke his neck and rendered him paralyzed from the chest down. If anyone was in need of hope, it would have been Zachary.
Yet, one week post-accident, he declared from his hospital bed, bound in neck brace, saying, “I’m fully trusting in the Lord. I know this is His will for my life, and although it may seem confusing at first, I’m excited to see how He is going to use me.” His family created the hashtag
#zacsHope to keep friends updated on his progress. His uncle created a web page, www. ZacsHope.com, and a Facebook page, Zachary Abblitt Recovery, which quickly gained over 1,300 followers. Zachary’s hope was polarizing as updates and pic-

They’re very, very rare,” Stutz said. “Usually comorbidity with other conditions are present. Of the thousands of doctors who communicate about this there have been fewer than 10 who have had a severe reaction. I cannot think of a single documented death.” During the meeting, Council Member Isaiah Wright briefly signed in and left. Wier confirmed that the councilor had tested positive for COVID as had members of his family. He had hoped to attend but became too ill to continue. As to weekly testing for city staff, Human Resource Director Sunny Valero confirmed the process. “If you’re a positive case or if you’re a close contact to a positive case and unvaccinated you need to quarantine,” Valero said. “If you’re vaccinated and
have symptoms, you need to quarantine. If you’re vaccinated and have no symptoms after a close contact with someone who is positive, you don’t have to quarantine.” The mandatory testing will be at no cost to employees and they can do it on their regular shift. Mayor Pro Tem Blake Inscore said, “I don’t want to place a burden on our employees.” Two members of the public briefly spoke against the mandatory testing. Thomas Barnes said, “I’m astounded by the lunacy of what you’re doing” and resident Roger Gitlin commented that taxpayers would be covering the bills for testing, “nothing is free.” Their remarks were countered by Council Member Ray Altman, “Don’t knock me for

All Crescent City employees will be subject to weekly COVID-19 testing by a unanimous vote of the Crescent City Council on Tuesday. The council also supported the governor’s mandatory mask mandate. This after hearing the latest Covid update by Del Norte County Public Health official Aaron Stutz. Dr. Stutz reported the vaccination rate within the city at 44%, with 111 new cases, pacing at between 30 and 40 new cases daily. Stutz reported Crescent City at among the highest in the state when it comes to new COVID cases. Three people, according to Stutz have recently died from the virus, and two are on ventilators. “I’d really like to push vaccinations,” he said. “There’s even

Del Norte County’s weekly COVID 19 update on Thursday began with a plea from Chamber of Commerce President Cindy Vosburg, “We must work together to fight this terrible monster.” Vosburg used Walmart as an example of a business hard hit by the virus. Of 277 Walmart employees in Crescent City, only 150 are able to come to work. The rest are in some state of carrying the COVID 19 virus or are in quarantine. “They’re trying their best, so be kind to them,” she pleaded with shoppers, “Show them some respect by wearing a mask.” Next up in the report presented on the Crescent City Facebook page was Mitch Hannah, the chief Executive Officer at Sutter Coast Hospital. “We’re concerned about staff shortages but this isn’t something Sutter imposed, this is something the state is demanding,” he said of the September 30 deadline for all medical staff to be vaccinated. If an employee has not had their first shot, they won’t make the deadline to be fully vaccinated, that may cause a ripple affect in terms of staffing, but they’re doing their best to track it. Hannah released the latest statistics: 87% of those stricken by COVID are unvaccinated, 92% in critical care and 95% on ventilators. Vaccination numbers are, however, increasing: the week before 42% of Del Norte County was vaccinated, the number is now 48%. In August alone, 610 people used the Sutter drive through to be vaccinated. Hannah reminded the audience all testing and vaccination can be done in the drive through without an appointment at no cost. The only time an appointment is necessary is for the Monoclonal Antibody Treatments which are for people who are COVID positive in order to prevent symptoms from worsening. Yurok leader and River Warrior takes final Journey
Raymond Mattz of Requa, California, began his journey on September 2, 2021. He was born on July 20,1942 to Emery and Geneva Brooks Mattz. A traditional Yurok, Raymond lived most of his life on the Klamath River, between his family’s homes at Brook’s Riffle and Rekwoi. Raymond descended from a long line of leaders, medicine and feather people. Coming from the Head House of La’yeq - the Jump Dance House at Rek-woi, he understood the Yurok people’s inherent connection to the Klamath RIver, and dedicated his life to the protection of the people, the River and the Salmon. He spent the majority of his life fishing and hunting on the River to support his family and enjoyed being at one with the River he loved most. Rain or sunshine you could find him on the River and if you were his fishing partner you had better not be late, because he took his fishing very seriously. Raymond was a legendary fisherman. He perfected gillnetting to an art and science. He was a respected fisherman because he worked hard. He knew more about how the River and fish moved, and how to catch them then most, skills he developed through his life long devotion to the River. His fishing techniques are notorious amongst fishermen, but even he was surprised when he caught a huge great white shark in the mouth of the Klamath River! Raymond was also an
athlete. He loved to run and box. He was also an artist, and when he was young he painted store windows during the holidays to make extra money. As he got older, he enjoyed working on regalia to add to the family’s dance collection. Raymond was elected to serve as a Yurok Tribal Councilman and was a member of the Yurok Cultural Committee. He was very committed to restoring the Klamath River’s natural fish populations and worked with his friend Ronnie Pierce to develop a fish hatchery on Omagar Creek where he raised salmon fingerlings for several years. He enjoyed watching the salmon grow and was so proud to see his babies swimming downstream to the Klamath River. Raymond contributed so much to his community, but his life’s work was fighting for the River, and continuing his family’s long tradition of advocating for Yurok rights. Raymond grew up hearing stories from his mother, Geneva Mattz. One particular story formed his life’s work: in the 1930’s a Judge and BIA agent came to the house to tell Geneva’s grandfather, Billy Brooks, that he couldn’t fish any more. Brooks got very angry and speaking loudly, he pointed toward rock at the mouth of the Klamath River, and said “see that rock down there that’s our fishing rock. My family has always fished there and we will always fish there. No white man is going to tell me I can’t
fish. Now get the hell off my land and don’t you ever come back here!” Just as his grandfather and generations from the beginning of time did, Raymond continued to fish on the Klamath RIver. As a teenager, Raymond and four others were fishing when state game wardens picked up their nets at Brooks Riffle and arrested Raymond. At that moment, Raymond decided he was going to fight for his inherent right to fish. Raymond changed the course of history when his fight went all the way to the United States Supreme Court. His case, Mattz v. Arnett, decided in 1973, was a landmark court case that not only affirmed Yurok people’s fishing rights, but confirmed the status of the Yurok Reservation as Indian Country, affirming the Yurok Tribe’s sovereignty as we know it today. This case also paved the way for many other Tribes to affirm their civil liberties as Native people. Raymond’s victory in the Supreme Court case came after decades of work to protect the Yurok way of life and with a cost. He was arrested numerous times for fishing on the River and was labeled a renegade, an outlaw and was targeted by law enforcement. Raymond’s children witnessed both of their parents being arrested numerous times for fishing, including law enforcement entering the family’s home in the middle of the night with guns drawn, looking for fish. Even this targeted racism and violence didn’t stop Raymond. During the late 1970’s, Raymond stood in direct protest to the government’s closure of the Yurok fishery and clashed with federal agents in full riot gear on

the Klamath River during the Salmon Wars. He and many others were arrested and charged with felonies just for protesting for their inherent rights as Indian people; rights the federal government had a duty to uphold. His years of fighting to protect Yurok fishing rights and the Yurok way of life left a heavy burden on this Fish and River Warrior and his family - scars that only those close to him saw. He wore them with pride trying to cover up the pain they caused. For those who enjoy fishing on the Klamath RIver today and will for generations to come, we should remember Raymond as our Martin Luther King, our John F. Kennedy, our Billy Frank, because he was our civil rights activist, he was our River Warrior, he was our sovereignty protector. He fought for our rights on the River bar, in Congress, and the Courts. He put his heart, soul, and life in danger so that we could fish and practice our culture. And thanks to him, we are able to fish and practice our way of life and sovereignty safely. While he is gone, we know he will continue to watch over the River. Fish on Cool Ray! At the last event, I noticed only a few people in the stands with masks. Everyone else was unmasked and in close proximity. If we can’t get people to wear masks, we’ll have to limit the number of people who can attend games. We don’t want to do that, so wear a mask.” Finally, both Harris and Stutz spoke to the need to keep kids in schools despite the risks. “We have second graders whose last experience of school was a semester of kindergarten. And now they’re supposed to be doing grade level work. They’ve missed out on milestones, and we need to do everything we can to keep them in school,” Harris said. Doctor Stutz reiterated, “The long term impacts of children not being in school, of parents not being able to work and provide a stable home are enormous. Myriah Ke’Shan Lehto
Myriah Ke’Shan Lehto who many knew as “Lovebug”, was born in Arcata CA to Toni R. Peters and Tony Lehto on August 18, 1991. She passed away at home on August 20, 2021. Myriah was a proud member of the Yurok Tribe. Those of you who knew her best know that she was a joyful loving person. She had the biggest smile and a contagious laugh. She brought joy to all those that she knew. Myriah gave the best hugs and always had a listening ear or a shoulder to cry on. One of her passions was that she loved to bead for everyone. She created the best projects. She beaded feathers for numerous friends and family for their graduations, she made unique designed earrings of all kinds for each season or holidays throughout the year. She loved the river the beach and the mountains. She enjoyed going camping at Jed Smith State Park with her Nana, her son and family. She loved spending time with friends and family at the river swimming. Lovebug was always about family and friends. But most of all her biggest pride and joy was her son Kayden. She had the most love for him. She often cared for Kayden more than she cared for herself. There wasn’t anything she wouldn’t do for him. She gave him the best
motherly love. She enjoyed attending family barbecues and birthdays. Lovebug enjoyed cooking with cousins, aunties and her Nana for holidays. She loved coloring eggs with her nephews and cousins for family Easter Egg Hunts. She also enjoyed making special gifts for her Nana’s annual Christmas gift exchange party. She and her Nana loved to go on road trips to visit family. Most trips were not planned just jump in the car and go with their runaway bags. Lovebug was very ceremonial. She grew up in a dance pit. She loved being a part of dance ceremony and dancing alongside of her uncles and cousins. Myriah is survived by our Nana Phyllis Donahue of Crescent City, CA, her son Kayden Romeo. Her mom Toni R. Peters of Crescent City and her dad Tony Lehto of Cave Junction, OR. And great grandfather Kenny Green of Crescent city. Letters to the Editor Party is a sham I was saddened to see that in the last edition of the Triplicate you had as a guest columnist someone espousing the Libertarian point of view regarding wearing face masks. The Libertarian Party is a sham, created by some economists and real estate developers to avoid regulations and taxes. They believe in very limited government, with no public schools, roads, utilities, etc. They espouse individual rights with no individual responsibility. This goes against the American ideals of the commons and the public good. George Washington understood this when he mandated all his troops be vaccinated against smallpox during the Revolutionary War. Also, one of his first priorities after becoming president was to have public
roads built to link the cities. The best example lately of selfish libertarian thinking is the school teacher in Marin County who chose not to wear a mask or get vaccinated. Half of the students and many parents got sick because of this one teacher. Public health takes precedence over individual rights. Private actions have public consequences. If you are going to have different points of view in your paper, then I expect I will see guest columnists from other parties across the political spectrum such as the Green Party, Democratic and even the Republicans. Guest columns Padilla, colleagues call on Biden to continue safe relocation of Afghan refugees Following the U.S. troop withdrawal from Afghanistan, U.S. Senator Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) led 25 of his Senate colleagues in calling on President Biden to continue the safe relocation of Afghan refugees, parolees, evacuees and Special Immigrant Visa applicants currently residing in third countries to the United States. The letter urges the administration to take immediate steps to expedite SIV and refugee program processing so that more Afghans are not left behind and ensuring all avenues are open for them to come to the United States, including by designating a humanitarian parole category for them. “The United States has long recognized the need to provide protections for refugees and those seeking
humanitarian parole… It is our duty as Americans to ensuring that Afghan partners who risked so much for our nation have a safe place to relocate, and we urge you to take immediate steps to expedite the SIV and refugee program processing so that more Afghans are not left behind,” wrote the Senators. “In addition, we urge you to ensure that all evacuated Afghans, including those evacuated by private sector volunteers, are paroled into the United States and not left to languish in third countries in legal limbo,” they continued. “Specifically, we ask that you create a designated humanitarian parole category for certain Afghan women and children, activists, human rights defenders, parliamentarians, journalists, and others who are in danger.”

If I made a pros-and-cons list, there would be more cons than pros. And he talks nonstop -- about anything and everything. If he’s not texting me, he’s calling me. We don’t go on real dates; all we do is hang out or go out to grab a bite. He contradicts himself often, and if we argue, he is always the victim. He talks a good game, but I feel like it’s all talk. I have gotten flowers once in 16 months, and no holiday or birthday gifts. But his talk game is so good that I feel guilty for thinking about breaking things off. Is it me? He can’t let you have your space because he’s afraid that if he does, you will escape. It is important that you listen to your intuition, because it’s sending you an important message. DEAR ABBY: There are several bad habits my husband has, but the one that frightens me the most involves our 2-year-old son. I’m afraid to leave them alone when we are out shopping. I have walked up on them a few times and noticed my husband reading or looking at stuff with his back to the buggy
while our son is in it. When I tell him it scares me, he says I’m overreacting. I’m worried someone will steal our son. He always says, “He’s within arm’s reach. No one is going to run away with him before I have the chance to stop them.” Abby, this kind of crime has happened before. I have seen it in the news. My husband is no superhero. Am I wrong to think he should keep the buggy in front of him at all times when our son is in it? He shouldn’t let our 2-yearold walk up the aisles unattended either. Toddlers should not wander unattended in the aisles either, not only because of the danger of kidnapping, but also the possibility of an accident. DEAR ABBY: I don’t trust the woman I’m with. She flirts with other guys and says disrespectful things about me when she talks to other people. We are also not on the same page sexually. I feel obligated to her because we have been together for 15 years. I don’t want counseling. Our new age of fire

Fire in the West is expected, and not so long ago, it seemed something the West experienced more than anywhere else. Nationally, big fires were treated as another freak of Western violence, like a grizzly bear attack or another California quirk like Esalen and avocados. Now the wildland fires flare up everywhere. There are fires in Algeria and Turkey, Amazonia and Indonesia, and France, Canada and Australia. Last year even Greenland burned. Fire seasons have lengthened, fires have gotten meaner and bigger; fires have begun not just gorging on logging slash and prowling the mountainous backcountry, but also burning right into and across towns. Three years ago in northern California, the Camp fire broke out along the Feather River and, burning southwest, incinerated the town of Paradise. Now, the Dixie fire, starting 20 miles north in the same drainage, is burning in the opposite direction, taking out the historic town of Greenville. The fires have us coming and going. The causes have been analyzed and reanalyzed, like placer miners washing and rewashing tailings. Likewise, the solutions have been reworked and polished until they have become clichés, ready to spill into the culture wars. The news media have fire season branded into their almanac of annual events. Scientific disciplines are publishing reports and data sets at an exponential rate. So far as understanding the fire scene, we’ve hit field capacity. What more can
we say? One trend is to go small and find meaning in the personal. But there is also an argument to go big and frame the story at a planetary scale that can shuffle all the survival memoirs, smoke palls that travel across the continent, melting ice packs, lost and disappearing species and sprawling frontiers of flame, in much the way we organize the swarm of starlight in a night sky into constellations. I’m a fire guy. I take fire not just as a random happening, but as an emergent property that’s intrinsic to life on Earth. So I expect fires. All those savanna fires in Africa, the land-clearing fires in Brazil and Sumatra, the boreal blowouts in Siberia and British Columbia, the megafires in the Pacific Northwest — all the flames we see. But then there are fires that should be present and aren’t — the fires that once renewed and stabilized most of the land all over our planet. These are the fires that humanity, with its species monopoly on combustion, deliberately set to make living landscapes into what the ancients termed “a second nature.” But it was not enough. We wanted yet more power without the constraints of living landscapes that restricted what and when we could burn. We turned to fossil fuels to burn through day and night, winter and summer, drought and deluge. With our unbounded firepower we remade second nature into “a third nature,” one organized around industrial combustion. Our fires in living landscapes and those made with fossil fuels have been reshaping the Earth. The re-

Add up all those varieties of burning, and we seem to be creating the fire equivalent of an Ice Age, with continental shifts in geography, radical changes in climate, rising sea level, a mass extinction and a planet whose air, water, soil and life are being refashioned at a breakneck pace. It’s said that every model fails but some are useful. The same holds true for metaphors. What the concept of a planetary Fire Age — a Pyrocene — gives us, is a sense of the scale of our fire-powered impact. It suggests how the parts might interact and who is responsible. It allows us to reimagine the issues and perhaps stand outside our entrenched perspectives. What we have made - if with unintended consequences - we can unmake, though we should expect more unknown consequences. We have a lot of fire in our future, and a lot to learn about living with it. CONVICTIONS Christopher Lee Baker, 38, of Crescent City, was convicted of elder/ dependant abuse and was sentenced to two years of probation, 364 days in jail and a fine of $1,600. Jacob Aaron Chindgren, 28, of Crescent City, was convcted of elder/ dependant abuse and was sentenced to four years in prison and a fine of $370. Michael Edwin Cook, 58, of Crescent City, was convicted of DUI or drugs combined with prior and was sentenced to three years of probation, 120 days in jail and a fine of $2,971. Gary Marcus Hall, 61, of Crescent City, was convicted of violating probation and was sentenced to 60 days in jail. Kaleb Darrol Lessard, 44, of Sebastopol was convicted of DUI with greater than .15 blood alcohol and
was sentenced to three years of probation, 4 days in jail and a fine of $1,864. Marshal James Ownsbey, 32, of Crescent City, was convicted of inflicting corporal injury on spouse/cohabitant and was sentenced to three years of probation, 12 days in jail and a fine of $920. Stephen Ray Sanders, 64, of Crescent City, was convicted of driving on a suspenced license with prior and was sentenced to one year of probation, 30 days in jail and a fine of $2,602. He was also convicted of driving on a suspended license with prior within the last seven years. Harold Douglas Wong, 54, of Crescent City, was convicted of DUI and was sentenced to three years of probation, 2 days in jail and a fine of $1,864.
OBITUARIES Perry Marlin Sr. June 15, 1958-August 18, 2021
Perry was born June 15, 1958 in Modesto, CA. Perry devoted his life to playing music and entertaining others. Perry played in a few bands but most notable was Wizard which was a major influence of the heavy metal scene in the 80’s. Perry received Honorable Mention in the Billboard 4th Annual Songwriting Contest with Let Your Love Grow. When Perry moved to Crescent City he was a DJ on the local KPOD radio for a few years as well as a local DJ and MC, playing any local gatherings he could. Perry treasured playing and making music. Perry is survived by his
4 children Perry Marlin Jr (Andrea), Andrea Kelleher (Nathan), Andrew Marlin and MacKenzee Marlin. Grandchildren Mikaila, Blake, Bryce, Liam, Benjamin and soon to arrive Conner. He is also survived by his sisters Lorica and Shelly, as well as numerous nieces and nephews who loved him dearly. Perry was preceded in death by his father Ronald and mother Eleanor and long time girlfriend Cathy Dehart. A celebration of Perry’s life will be held next year in June.

tures of Zachary poured in from his mom, Kristi, who began to journal though his journey. “As the classification ‘quadriplegic’ began to be used by doctors about Zac,” Kristi explained, “my heart would just seize up. Yet I would quickly find myself choking out a whisper, ‘But God, You have the Final Word in Zachary’s life.” Throughout the long, initial month at Mercy Hospital in Redding, Calif., Zachary was often seen laughing with his siblings and friends via video chats as they observed his new weaknesses, such as trying to feed himself. “I believe he laughs because he is living in faith,” his mom, Kristi, observed. “He knows God lives in him and is working His power through his weaknesses. He does not seem afraid of them. But even if he is, more than being whole, he wants God to be glorified in his life.” The momentum of Hope continued a month later, as Zachary was accepted into Craig Hospital for rehab, recognized as one of the top spinal cord rehabilitation centers in the nation. His family cheered him on with a video they created for his acceptance into Craig. “Zac is a fighter,” his
brother Spencer commented, “and he is gonna do everything he can do get back on his feet.” “Everything Zac is, and everything he has been has never come out more than in this current circumstance of watching Zac being physically paralyzed…” his sister Charis explained. “But just as Zac has set his mind to learn the piano, to surf, to be an athlete and a runner… this [rehab] will give him all that he needs to put that same determination in to waking again and running again…” Hope came in many ways at Craig Hospital. His day was packed with therapy session in which he had to re-learn the simplest of daily tasks, such as brushing his teeth. When he found he could begin to wiggle his small toe, he was able to access state-of-theart equipment such as the Lokomat, a robot-assisted waking therapy machine. After weeks of an Upper Extremities class, where electric stimulation was hooked up to his wrists and fingers, he felt his righthand thumb come “alive.” “God gave me back a thumb!” he later told his family on a phone call. When asked how he could be so strong through all of this, Zachary was quick to reply, “It’s my faith in God. He’s my firm foundation…when everything is stripped away. It’s been incredible to see that

through the fire, He’s been there the entire time. I’d rather walk through the fire with God than be in the world alone without Him.” Day after day, therapy at Craig Hospital brought new Hope. “It’s like Christmas every day,” Zachary laughed, “as I wait to see what new body part the Lord is gonna unlock for me.” New hope continued to come, such as the moment Zachary’s running shoes were put back on his unfeeling feet feet that used to run a half marathon per week - in order to get him lifted into a standing position again. Or Hope as his motionless legs were connected to electric stimulation to pedal a bike. Hope as he went back into the waters, the source of his accident, and learned to swim again in Craig Hospital’s therapy pool. Month after month, his mom Kristi remained by his side. “Every time I see Zachary, he is smiling,” she observed. “‘The joy of the Lord’ is not just a feel-good verse. It is truly evident in Zacs heart that the Lord is keeping him strengthened because he has absolute confidence in God. He doesn’t question God. He isn’t fearful of the future. Brookings-Harbor, Rich Abblitt, noted Zachary’s joy: “Everyone wants what Zachary found - joy in the spirit and freedom in Christ. That the assurance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not yet seen is the Lord’s story being written regarding the life of Zac who dared to surrender with no apprehension, has no regrets but joyous anticipation that God will answer him and whatever he asks for he has pleased the Lord to bring Him glory!” In June, after being gone from home for 206 days, Zachary finally returned to Brookings and to the harbor beach where it all began. Back home. Back to the piano which Zac used to practice for hours. Back to the running shoes he used to wear. Back to his bass guitar he used to play. Back to his surfboard that started it all…. Returning to home in a wheelchair was a great challenge, but Zachary’s courage did not surprise his younger brother Everest, who had been his cross-country running partner. “Although it’s been incredible to see how Zac has taken all this since day one,” Everest observed, “The strength of his faith in our God is not something that just happened ‘overnight’. The same strength was there before the injury. It just got put to the test...and he has taken it as I know God would want him to.” And the inspiration has
been widespread. Letters, emails, and Facebook posts of encouragement continued to pour in from family, friends, the community, and across the nation. One Facebook comment reads, “You go home with prayers from the thousands of people who have been praying for you.” And another comment says, “Although difficult I am sure, thank you for sharing this journey. I have followed it from the beginning and through it, I have grown as a person. Your son is an amazing young man. I watched every video posted and always saw his determination and never saw tears, always a smile. He has been a true inspiration to me as an adult.” Locals Michael and Jill Lange were also greatly touched by Zachary. For Michael, it was very personal, as he found himself on the beach the day of Zachary’s accident and ended up helping to pull him from the surf. After months of following Zachary’s progress, the idea of a Hopefest was born, and with it, an opportunity for Zachary to share with the community his story of Hope. Michael and Jill, together with other members Brookings Nazarene and Calvary Heritage, began to put into motion the planning of Zacs Hopefest, which will take place at Azalea Park this September 12 from 1-4 p.m. Michael explains his motivation behind the Hopefest. “Our community is reeling right now from the onslaught of an epidemic and all of the ripple effects associated with that, and we want to share that there is Victory in Christ, no matter how impaired our physical stature is, or becomes, the greater miracle is the gift of Salvation. By September 4, the Abblitts need to be moved out of the home they have been renting as the owners of the house are putting it up for sale. Though timing is difficult, the tri-level home is less than ideal for Zachary’s needs now. Their hope is to purchase a home locally in which they can remodel to make accessible for Zachary. But for all Zachary Abblitt has been through, he still explains, “I wouldn’t describe this as a trial. It hasn’t felt like one. A trial is circumstance with no hope. Where things feel out of control.” For Zachary not to consider his paralysis a trial is mystifying to the mind, until you come hang out with him, and you hear him laugh, and you see his peace, and his joy, and his trust in the goodness of God‘s deep love for him. And suddenly Zachary’s story makes perfectly good sense. “God is in control and it’s just that simple,” Kristi journals. “Indeed, #zacsHope is Jesus and that makes all the difference in the world.” to fight Pearson. Schumack was transported to Sutter Coast Hospital for medical clearance and booked on charges of burglary, obstruct/resist and executive officer, possession of controlled substance paraphernalia and giving false identification to a police officer.
