Surfing community mourns Noll’s death Knox Keranen The Triplicate
The surfing community is mourning after the passing of 84-year-old Greg Noll, a pioneer in big-wave surfing, who died of natural causes on June 28. If you’ve ever watched the 1966 classic surfing film, “The Endless Summer” you’ve seen a brief glimpse of him streaking across a giant wave off the coast of Oahu. Noll was given the nickname “Da Bull” both for his bullish appearance, and the way he charged down a wave. Noll grew up in Manhattan Beach, and began surfing at the age of 11. By 15, he was shaping
his own boards out of Balsa wood in his parent’s garage, and later, at the infamous surfboard shaper Dale Velzy’s shop. Committing himself to the sport, Noll decided to complete his last year of high school in Hawaii to chase bigger waves. And, the waves Noll was chasing kept getting bigger and bigger. In 1957, he became one of the first to surf Waimea Bay in Oahu, which is now known for some of the biggest wave surfing in the world. Noll described his experience of paddling out for the first time at the North Shore Pipeline — another big wave spot in Oahu — in a recent interview with Surfline.
“The thing was just glistening like diamonds off the face of this wave, just a big beautiful, grinding thing...You look back man, and I wouldn’t trade any of it,” he said. Later in his career, Noll began to focus more on creating surfboards, and launched his own line of handcrafted boards. His surfboard company, Noll Surfboards, is still around today and is run by his son Jed in San Clemente. Noll was also one of the first surf film filmmakers, along with fellow surfer Bud Brown. “I was so stoked on surfing that I just wanted to make a Please see NOLL, Page A3

Throughout the pandemic, Our Daily Bread Ministries never quit feeding people in need. “We will serve anybody dinner, anytime. They don’t have to bring any identification, it’s just a matter of if you’re hungry, we will serve you,” said Rachel
Justice, the new director of Our Daily Bread. A faith-based feeding program, Our Daily Bread, has been serving hot meals, five-days a week since they opened in 2006 — although meals were switched to take out due to COVID-19. Now, the ministry is looking to expand its services through a partnership with the nonprofit
Del Norte Mission Possible, which focuses on providing services to homeless individuals. The partnership is essentially a building-share program between the two organizations. Currently, Our Daily Bread is working to renovate their building at 1135 Harrold Street. Once completed, those renovations will allow for a more than 25-bed shelter at the
ministry, which will be operated by Mission Possible. Food and addiction recovery services will continue to be run through Our Daily Bread. Justice said the shelter — which will become the only true shelter in the county — will not only provide a roof over the Please see DAILY BREAD, Page A3

After COVID-19 forced Crescent City’s annual Independence Day celebration to stop a year, the city went all out over the weekend. During the Fourth of July Parade, community organizations, businesses and members marched and drove down Front Street to celebrate America’s birthday. Mayor Jason Greenough and Police Chief Richard Griffin joined the festivities. The grand marshals were the men and women who led the COVID-19 response over the last year. The Del Norte High School Class of 1970 came back together and placed second in the parade.

A “devastating lack of affordable housing” is something that can no longer be ignored, U.S. Sen. Jeff Merkley said Tuesday as he announced he was unveiling the Affordable Home Act in the Senate. Merkley said housing is something he hears about constantly and is something that must be addressed now. “Every single town hall I hold, every single meet and greet with elected officials, housing comes up,” Merkley said. “It’s a challenge in rural areas, suburban areas, everywhere. Every Oregonian, every American, should be able to afford a decent home in a decent community.” Merkley said housing is something that every person needs, adding a stable home is a goal for every American. “Housing is so much more than a building or a bed,” Merkley said. “Stable, affordable housing is a foundation for thriving families and thriving communities. Study after study has shown that children who grow up in a stable home do better in school and do better in the rest of their lives. When families have a stable home, children start to blossom.” Merkley said being able to rent a home is difficult throughout Oregon but added home ownership is even a greater challenge. With fewer people owning homes, it creates a trickle-down impact that hurts individuals, families and communities. “The greatest and most powerful factor in building middle-class wealth is home ownership,” he said. “Right now, what we’re seeing is homes are out of reach in terms of their prices and so many of our youth come out college holding so much debt.” Merkley said the Affordable Home Act will address many of the problems, including a history of racial discrimination in federal housing policies. Merkley’s bill would invest $560 billion over 10 years to build more housing, which would hopefully drive prices down. “The goal is to have everyone be able to access homes they can afford,” Merkley said. “Everybody deserves a decent, affordable home. OBITUARIES Jeannine Marie Zercher
Jeannine Marie Zurcher, 88, native of Anacortes, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Tuesday, June 29, 2021. She was born on November 1, 1932, the daughter of Louis and Clara LaPlace and was of French descent. Jeannine graduated with the Class of 1951 from the Anacortes High School and married the love of her life, Lee Zurcher in 1953. Together they had three

children: Theresa, Stephen and Louis. They made their home in Crescent City, California where they owned and operated the Crescent City Septic Service unti1 1977 when they returned to Anacortes. She then worked for the City of Anacortes and operated a cleaning service with her daughter. Jeannine enjoyed water skiing and flying airplanes. She found joy in spending time with family, travelling, camping and telling stories. Jeannine also enjoyed playing cribbage with her longtime companion, Kent LaRue. Jeannine was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Lee in 2001. She is survived by her children: Theresa Moore, Stephen (Susan)
and Louis (Diane) Zurcher, all of Anacortes; grandchildren: Jaime Zaragoza, Steve (Lisa) Robinson, Joshua Wood, Justin (Lyndsee) Zurcher, Carla Zurcher, Amy (Brad Kulp) and Eric (Ariel) Zurcher as well as eight great grandchildren. Jeannine will be greatly missed by family and many lifelong friends. Robert Ryan Fitzhugh July 10, 1949-June 28, 2021
Robert Ryan Fitzhugh, one of the last selfproclaimed frontiersmen, steelhead fishermen, and deer hunting experts of the Pacific Northwest departed this world on June 28th, 2021. Born on July 10th, 1949, in Crescent City, CA, Robert was affectionately referred to by his children, grandchildren, adopted children, neighborhood kids, and friends as Dad/ Pops/Roberto/Rebo. As one of nine children, Robert lived his life to the fullest and followed in his father’s and brother’s footsteps as a commercial fisherman, where he did his best to tame the
mighty Pacific while carving out a living for his family. Although he was tough as nails when it mattered, Dad did not hesitate to share his humble possessions with his friends and family or to give you the shirt off his back when you were in need. Dad was just built that way; he was the textbook definition of a man who endured to live his life within the moment while simultaneously looking for opportunities to bring small measures of happiness to those in his orbit. Some knew Rebo as a man with a rough-andtumble reputation. Still, to his family, Dad was the quintessential gentle giant with a visible heart of gold for everyone to see and take part in his compassion and generosity. As children, we could vividly recall the kindness of a man that most people would never have the privilege of knowing. But that was okay to those around him because we all lived comfortably

under his larger-than-life persona. Even as he grew older, Dad continued to look for opportunities to help others versus taking care of himself. He embodied and lived up to the true measure of a man that you could count on no matter the challenge or circumstance. He famously once said that if you judge people based on their mistakes in life, you will not have any friends. These words still resonate with his friends and family and are a guiding principle in many of our lives. Robert was preceded in eternal rest by his father, Raymond Benjamin Fitzhugh, his mother Patrica Ellen Fitzhugh, his brother Pete Fitzhugh, his son Jack Wesley Fitzhugh and baby Fitzhugh, who was born too special for this world. Among those who will miss him dearly are his children Peter C. Fitzhugh, Ryan R. Fitzhugh, Misty Fitzhugh, Madison Fitzhugh, his siblings Patsy, Mikie, Linda, Harry, Raymond, Janice, Jane, his many grandchildren and his friends and neighbors.
Melvin Fogle passed away on Father’s Day, June 20, 2021 at his home in Crescent City with son David, near his bedside. Born June 1, 1930, he was one of six children born to Flora Meyers Fogle Clark. Melvin honored his country and served in the Army during the Korean Conflict. In October 1951, he married Claris Lovelace of Paskenta, CA and they were devoted to each other from that day on. They had two sons Rick and David. Melvin cared for Claris until her death. He was a hardworking man, appreciated honest
good work, having little patience for stupid laws and lazy people. Over his lifetime, he shirred sheep on the California coast, built homes in a number of cities, doing concrete curb and sidewalk work, cabinet building as well as home construction. For many years he worked in the timber industry, fell trees and did saw work inside in the mill. He then discovered the fishing and crabbing industry and loved it. Melvin brought an old wooden crab boat first then upgraded several times. He crabbed through the long cold winters, salmon

living any way I could. If there was a buck in going out and waxing boards for guys, I probably would have done it,” said Noll in a 1996 interview with The Surfer’s Journal. “I wanted to shape boards, I wanted to make movies, I wanted to be a part of surfing in any way that I could.” After easing out of surfing, Noll went up to Alaska and got involved in the commercial fishing trade. Eventually, he moved back to California and lived out the remainder of his life in Hiouchi, along the Smith River, where he spent his time steelhead fishing. Still, his heart never left surfing. He continued to build boards with his son and became a cheerleader for the sport through radio and television interviews. Greg is survived by his wife, Laura, and their four children, Ashlyn, Jed, and Rhyn. A fourth child, Tate, is deceased.

Jesse Finkenkeller is an advocate and outreach worker for Our Daily Bread. Finkenkeller used to be homeless, and said he knows what it’s like to be “less fortunate.” He credits Our Daily Bread for turning his life around, including helping him quit drugs. “This is where it all started for me. I was on the streets, I had an argument with my wife and I wound up here. I was half-dead when I came here, and that’s the honest-to-God truth... But when I started getting healed, I decided this is where I belong, and this is what God wanted me to do,” said Finkenkeller. Finkenkeller said he

Later in life, Noll continued to be an advocate for the sport while living in Hiouchi. hopes sharing his testimony can have a positive impact on someone else experiencing substance abuse. Additionally, he’s aiming to spread awareness, and reduce stigma surrounding homeless issues in the community, along with other community partners who have experienced similar hardship. “Our biggest thing is the community here, we’ve all been in that situation; drug addicts, we’ve all been homeless, we’ve all seen that, so our eyes are wideopen to helping people,” said Finkenkeller. “If you start helping people instead of stomping on them; people need that.” Since taking over the directorship from her husband in February of 2020, Justice said she has been focusing on collaborating with other community groups and organizations. Also, like Finkenkeller, she’s working to reduce the “homeless stigma” by connecting unhoused individuals with other members of the public through a new bible-based fellowship program. “We really encourage
the general public to come and participate and get to know some of our unhoused...get to know their story, we have the most amazing stories,” said Justice. The new program will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursdays at Our Daily Bread. Additionally, Justice recently graduated with a certificate in addictions studies from College of the Redwoods, which will allow her to start up more faith-based counseling programs, beyond the weekly 12-step meeting they already host at the ministry. With an expected increased clientele, Justice said they are looking for more volunteers, especially cooks, as well as financial partners and food donations. Justice said she expects their meals served to double when the shelter is up and running. What’s more, the ministry took a financial hit during the pandemic due to decreasing donations. Letters to the Editor Use 747 Supertanker Here we are, at the beginning of what could prove to be worst wildfire season ever and the world’s best firefighting tool sits unused and not ready to go because of decisions made by the U.S. Forest Service and states not to use it. Unfortunately, in 2002 two Lockheed C-130 Hercules airplanes crashed while fighting fires, one in California and one in Colorado. In 2004, the Forest Service made the decision not to use the large tanker firefighting airplanes, instead relying on helicopters and smaller planes. The Supertanker would have really helped on these fires: The 2020 Oregon fires burned 1,221,324 acres, killed 11 people and burned 3,000 buildings. At Canby in the middle of the day, the streetlights and outside lights of businesses were on because of the darkness from the smoke.
On July 12, 2017, lightning started the Chetco Bar fire, near Brookings, and it burned 191,125 acres. In 2017, The Eagle Creek fire near Cascade Locks, burned 50,000 acres and most likely could have been put out quickly by the Supertanker if it would have been used. There is a large fire burning at Mt. Shasta in California. Are we going to have to experience a disaster, (Holocaust), like the building collapse at Surfside, Florida, before we realize that we need to prepare for these things ahead of time? When the fire is burning, it is too late to start preparing for it. Many people would independently enjoy basic daily pleasures, such as visiting with friends or performing the necessities for living that include medical appointments and grocery shopping, if it were not for the structural barriers that hinder them. While the construction of new sidewalks and curb cuts presents a temporary nuisance to the flow of automobile and pedestrian traffic, the increased accessibility makes a long-term difference in the lives of persons with mobility disabilities and all of us who know them. Here is a little bit about Jackie... “The summer I turned 7, my mother went to work at a doctor’s office. He was the old-fashioned kind of doctor who still made house calls. He used his reflex hammer on my knees one time and when my legs didn’t give the usual jerk,
he told me I must be dead. I was horrified and began to cry, until he laughed and said he was joking, I was fine. In spite of his humor I really liked him. “Each morning my mom would drop my brother, sister and me off at the library in town, then she’d go to work. My brother would disappear almost immediately in whatever interested him that day. My sister and I would turn right and go through the doors into the Children’s Room. Sister would wander up and down the aisles searching for just the right book and I would select first one book then another until I found one that piqued my interest. I would then scurry to “my
corner” and curl up on the floor with my treasure. “The windows in the Children’s Room were floor to ceiling two-foot-wide slits every 10-12 feet. ‘My corner’ was in one of these windows in a literal corner, and I would stay there all morning, completely enthralled with the journey I’d chosen that day. I would lose myself in the pages of the book so completely that my sister would have to nudge me, none too gently, with her foot to let me know it was time to go at noon, when our mom would pick us up for lunch. Don’t you have a list of things to look for to tell someone when it is time to get out while the getting is good? -- VERY WORRIED MOTHER DEAR MOTHER: I certainly do, and you have a right to be worried. It has been a while since I shared this important information about abusive behaviors. Read on: (1) PUSHES FOR QUICK INVOLVEMENT: Comes on strong, claiming, “I’ve never felt loved like this by anyone.” An abuser pressures the new partner for an exclusive commitment almost immediately. (2) JEALOUS: Excessively possessive; calls constantly or visits unexpectedly; prevents you from going to work because “you might meet someone”; checks the mileage on your car. (3) CONTROLLING: If you are late, interrogates you intensively about whom you talked to and where you were; keeps all the money; insists you ask permission to go anywhere or do anything. (4) UNREALISTIC EXPECTATIONS: Expects you to be the perfect mate and meet his or her every need. (5) ISOLATION: Tries to isolate you from family and friends; accuses people who are your supporters of “causing trouble.” The abuser may deprive you of a phone or car, or try to prevent you from holding a job. When immortals die Pepper Trail
Giant sequoias come as close to immortality as living organisms can. Many live over a thousand years, an almost unimaginable span of survival in the face of all of nature’s challenges. So it comes as a shock to read that over 10% of all the giant sequoias on Earth - thousands of trees - were killed in last year’s Castle Fire in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. When the immortals die, we can’t deny that we have entered a time of ecological chaos. For years now, the landscapes of the West have been shifting before our eyes. Familiar ecosystems are becoming … something else. The dead sequoias ask: What will that “something else” be? It’s tempting to imagine that ecosystems will simply move, relocating to stay within their preferred climatic conditions. Where I live in southern Oregon, there is a well-defined succession of plant communities from the hot, dry valleys to the cool, wet mountain peaks. So, predictions about responses to climate change are often expressed in relation to elevation: for example, we expect higher temperatures to cause pine forests to “move up the mountainsides,” making room for expanding oak woodlands. To see if that’s realistic, let’s look at California’s Sierra National Forest, between Yosemite and Kings Canyon national parks. Following a drought and resulting pine beetle outbreak, a staggering 58% of the trees in the Sierra National Forest died between 2014-2017. Forest service biologists found that mortality was especially high among the largest ponderosa pines, and that new seedlings were mostly incense cedar and oak species, “representing a potential long-term shift in composition from forests that were dominated by P. ponderosa.” So, will these Sierra pine forests discreetly withdraw to cooler and wetter higher elevations? Will oaks move in to replace them? Given a century or two, maybe. But in the time frame of the next few decades, the answer is almost certainly no. Change is occurring with unprecedented speed, and transitions will not be orderly and gradual. They will be abrupt and often violent, and in forest ecosystems will be driven by that agent of chaos, wildfire. Individual trees don’t move - if conditions become unsuitable, they die, and dead trees are fuel. In 2017, the Railroad Fire burned over 12,000 acres in the Sierra National Forest. In 2018, this was followed by the 96,000-acre Ferguson Fire. In 2020, the Creek Fire burned a staggering 375,000 acres in that national forest. And just south of the Sierra National Forest, 2020’s Castle Fire burned almost 175,00 acres in the Sequoia National Forest and Giant Sequoia National Monument. Fueled by huge numbers of beetle-killed dead trees, these mega-fires
Pepper Trail consumed normally fire-resistant mature pines and giant sequoias, and of course all the seedlings of oaks, incense cedar and other plants beginning to establish a new forest. Unfortunately, the situation in the Sierra National Forest is not unusual. California (and the West) is burning everywhere. Seventeen of the 20 largest wildfires ever recorded in California have occurred since 2003, and five of the six very largest all happened last year. Repeated intense wildfires destroy the seedbank of trees, and leave behind not a more adaptable forest but a coarse scabland of weeds and invasive grasses. I know many federal and private land managers. They are well aware of the implications of climate change, and are doing their best to reduce fuel loads and to help plant communities transition to the new conditions. So were the managers of the Sierra National Forest. But in the face of relentless warming and drought it made little difference. Humanity and everything living has hit a hard reboot. The planet is resilient, and life will eventually stabilize, but that may take centuries. In the meantime, is there anything can we do? First, of course, we must drastically cut CO² and methane emissions, to avoid the worst climate change scenarios. Next, we need to preserve linkages, to give plants and animals escape routes as they seek the conditions they need. Finally, we may need to take an active hand, moving key species to new areas as their former habitat is lost. I have my doubts that we possess the ecological wisdom required, but for some species it may be their only hope. New details in mystery of Beach Clean-up removes child found in duffel bag thousands of pounds of trash DEL NORTE TRIPLICATE
Oregon State Police have released new DNA details that the law enforcement agency hopes will lead to the identification of a deceased child found in a rest area near the Oregon Coast. On December 10, 2020, the Oregon State Police recovered the remains of a female child in the forest immediately adjacent to the H.B. Van Duzer Forrest State Scenic Corridor rest area east of Lincoln City. Her body was inside a duffel bag that had been concealed in the forest near the rest area. Based on the condition of the remains, little was known about the deceased’s race, appearance, or other identifying characteristics. In an attempt to identify the deceased, OSP and Oregon State Medical Examiner’s Office used a specialty lab to extract DNA information to aid in her identification. With the assistance of Parabon Nanolabs, investigators now know more identifying details which will hopefully assist

The following new information is being released: • Age: 7 – 9 • Eye color: Hazel / Brown • Hair color: Brown / Black • Skin color: Light Brown / Fair with no freckles • Race: She has been identified as mostly Caucasian with some Central American ancestry • She was wearing a pull-up diaper Earlier anthropological and forensic dental exam-
inations of the child determined she stood between 3’10’ and 4’6” tall. OSP has been working in partnership with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children since the discovery of the child’s remains. Over the past six months, detectives have definitively ruled out more than 60 potential missing kids from information provided by NCMEC and tips from the public. While investigators continue to work in partnership with NCMEC, there is a strong likelihood this child has not been reported missing. Investigators said they would like the public to know they are already considering all children listed on the NCMEC website and therefore, there is no need to contact the Oregon State Police to highlight those names. Every year, we’ve seen the cost of housing go up. Over last six years, pay rates have gone up 5 percent while cost of rent has gone up 61 percent. So many families are spending a huge share of their monthly income on rent.” If made law, the Affordable Home Act will spend significant federal resources on getting new housing built, tackling homelessness and housing affordability. But the majority of the funding would go into an emergency housing program to help people directly through rental assistance programs, emergency vouchers and grants.
