If Trees Could Talk…

Many Thanks to Gasquet Mike and his trusty drone as he puts the flashlight on long standing human-created blight on our magnificent forests and greenspace. The following jPegs behind the trees view are horrific. All the pix are in the County located on Temple, Waldo, Union and Melaney Dr. If they could talk, what might the trees? “Please save us” “… our not so new human occupants are killing us.” Drug needles plus horrific trash are destroying Del Norte and City forests within City

Every year for at least the last ten, Volunteers have cleaned up Crescent South Beach immediately following July 4th. And their efforts have been nothing short of phenomenal. The Smith River Alliance in partnership with Redwood Parks Conservancy, California Dept. Of Transportation and Recology Del Norte have removed spent fireworks and tons of trash which besmirch the awesome beauty of the North Coast. Organized by co-Executive Directors Grant Werschkull and Patty McCleary, Smith River Alliance has dedicated all its energy and effort to safeguard and restore the

Guest Commentary - Opinion by Samuel Strait
A Nondenominational Prayer:
BOS’s Borges says Controversial, City Council’s Wright says He’s Incapable!
Hardly a scintillating response I would expect from the City and County’s “Brain Trust”. Perhaps the definition of the word, “Tolerance” is in order. While I am not sure the agnostics and the atheists will rise in rebellion, nor any other faith when the nondenominational option is available to all faiths as a prelude to public meetings in lieu of a meaningless “moment of silence”.
When asked point blank, the Del Norte County’s chair, Joey Borges, has yet to satisfactorily explain where the controversy lies and refuses to entertain the notion the Board of Supervisors should place “the controversial prayer” on the agenda for at the very least some discussion. Clearly many other items of questionable importance seem to find
less difficulty appearing on past BOS agendas, say repeated efforts to “claim” the Smith River, our water source, has been “poisoned” by innumerable human economic activities occurring presently and nearly one hundred years in the area’s past. Zero for five passionate appeals by hysterical, screeching members of the public over the past year. No such contamination in evidence, yet the board has spent too much\ time during several meetings listening to the diatribes of the few.
The Crescent City Harbor District elected to grace its meetings with a short prayer before each meeting earlier this Spring with very little controversy, demonstrations outside the Harbor’s Office, or any sort of violent misbehavior in protest from
ANTIFA. Meetings have gone forward exuding an air of calm with no cries of outrage, verbal challenge, or criticism over the opening prayer. Please Chair Borges, enlighten us as to where the controversy might lie?
As to Mayor Pro Tem Isaiah Wright, who finds himself and his fellow counselors incapable of writing a brief prayer to commence the Council’s meetings of likely less than a minute in length, perhaps should resign, and the city should find themselves a representative capable of stringing a few words together which resemble a prayer. I’m not sure Isaiah, how “incapable” is going to work for you. No one seems to understand why it is our local leadership has become quite so “timid”, constant-
ly looking for others to carry their water. Clearly a leader elected to hold office has the responsibility to listen and act for the benefit of his entire constituency and not be concerned over the objections of a few. If there is no support for a nondenominational prayer, so be it, but it is unconscionable for Joey Borges and Isaiah Wright to deny a request from the public to place this item on an agenda ASAP! There have been far too many times recently where both governing agencies do not listen to the public. It has become more and more evident the claim of representation from our County’s elite is a hollow one. Very little of the BOS’s business actually stems from the Board of Supervisors. The City
PoliCe Blotter
Council is guilty of the same. Hidden in places like the respective consent agendas, our representatives have very little to strain themselves when raising the universal gavel of a 5-0 vote. Perhaps a little “controversy” discussing the investment of a preliminary nondenominational prayer before each meeting is in order. It has been requested of both bodies for a prayer before meetings to appear on an agenda. Time to put up and stop pretending its controversial and act! Time to claim inability to preform to cease. Chair Borges, you have little to hold up as an accomplishment while serving on the BOS for over a year. Mayor Pro Tem Wright not much more if anything than Chair Borges. Both are
representatives with little to write about on their lists of accomplishments. Neither serve on boards rich with a wealth of accomplishments. Election time is rapidly approaching for both Borges and Wright should they choose to be reelected. Accomplishments matter and both men have few to hold up. It might surprise Borges and Wright how little the public has begun to care about what both the Board of Supervisors and the City Council try to accomplish. Not much recently, for its citizens. A prayer before meetings could change the apathy directed towards both, controversy notwithstanding. Mr. Borges, Mr. Wright, this issue will not go away no matter how much you choose to ignore it. Time to put up or step down!

In the past few weeks, much of the media has been dominated by the conflict between Israel and Iran.
Perhaps, while listening to the news about the constant instability and conflict of the Middle East, we ask ourselves if we should pick a side, or if we even care.
Or, perhaps we think because they are half a world away it doesn’t really affect us here in America.
I would definitely agree with the sentiment that the issues in the Middle East are very complex. They go back centuries, and are difficult for our culture to understand.
However, when I am faced with these types of issues, I do what any devout, born again Christian should do. I see what the Bible (God’s Word) says about it.
I know what some may be thinking. Why would I reference an antiquated, history book about complex, current events?
It’s because, to the Christian, the Bible is more than just an old history book. It’s God’s living,

Where I Stand
breathing Word that gives us meaningful instruction for how we should live our lives today.
It is also the only written manuscript that dares to predict future events with 100% accuracy.
So to me, reaching for my Bible to get clear insights on events unfolding in our world today is a no brainer.
What do I see when I look in my Bible pertaining to Israel?
Let’s take a look.
God makes it very clear in
His Word that the Jewish people belong to Him.
“The Lord your God has chosen you to be a people for his treasured possession, out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth.” (Deuteronomy 7:6).
This passage also makes it clear that those who oppose Israel will be opposed by God.
In Genesis chapter 12, God told Abraham that he would make him a great nation.
Abraham would become the father of the Jewish nation, later to become known as Israel.
Also, in this chapter, God tells
Abraham, “I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who curses you,”
America has enjoyed blessing and prosperity beyond any other nation on earth. As we just celebrated our nation’s 249th birthday, we can’t help but pause and recognize just how blessed we as a nation have been.
It is my firm belief that one of the biggest reasons as to America’s wealth and prosperity is due to the fact that she has always stood with Israel.
The Bible also predicts that in the latter days there would be a rise in antisemitism. Zechariah 12-14, and Ezekiel 37-39 speak of a time when all of the nations of the earth will gather against it.
But it’s not just a future national coalition that will come against Israel. Sadly, antisemitism has been growing globally at an alarming rate.
According to research conducted by Pastor Ray Jones of Ridgecrest Baptist Church, the U.S. based Anti-Defamation League (ADL), reports a drastic increase in antisemitism across the globe since 2021. It should
be no surprise that, besides Europe, an alarming increase has been here in the United States. Ray Jones also notes, the U.S. is at its highest point since the ADL has been recording incidents of antisemitism in 1979.
This phenomenon shocked most of us when we saw antisemitic protests on U.S. campuses across the nation in recent years. Slogans such as “death to Jews”; “We love Hamas, we love your rockets too”; and “River to the sea, Palestine will be free.”
We wondered how we had fallen so far from our victories against racism in the last 50 to 60 years. How did this happen?
In a courageous act to show support for Israel, Crescent City, City Council member Jason Greenough, authored a letter condemning the horrific terrorist attack on innocent civilians in Israel on October 7, 2023. This letter was to be sent to the Consulate General of Israel to the Pacific Northwest on behalf of the City Council of Crescent City.
Sadly, this heroic effort was voted down by the rest of the

City Council members.
Now, let me be very clear. I am in no way saying that there are antisemitic people on the City Council. But, I cannot help but wonder why a simple letter condemning the atrocities carried out by the vicious Hamas terrorists would be voted down. Very disappointing. In this life, we are all faced with times when we must take a stand. A stand for what is right. As the saying goes, “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” -Edmund Burke In other words, even one who believes in good can allow evil to flourish by being a passive bystander.
My encouragement is simply this: Stand up for what is right. Speak out against wrong doing. And, let us not allow antisemitism to cast its ugly shadow on our country or our community. May God richly bless you.

Redwood National and State Parks, Yurok Tribe, and Department of Defense join forces to improve park visitor experiences

ORICK, Calif. – Staff
from Redwood National and State Parks, the Yurok Tribe, and the Department of Defense are collaborating this summer to repair, restore and enhance multiple facilities around the park in conjunction with the Air National Guard’s Innovative Readiness Training (IRT) Program, which provides infrastructure construction training opportunities to Air Force units.
“This project exemplifies the power of partnerships and the impact of the Great American Outdoor Act and other
federal funds,” said Leonel Arguello, superintendent of Redwood National and State Parks. “Revitalizing these sites across the parks is not only preserving a piece of our past but also investing in the future of conservation. This partnership between the National Park Service, the Department of Defense, and the Yurok Tribe, will highlight our ability to collectively train, build, and serve the needs of our valued parks and promote the NPS mission of protecting and managing the nation’s natural resources and cultural heritage.”

Projects the team will work on include infrastructure improvements at the Wolf Creek Education Center, rehabilitation at the Kuchel Visitor Center, and Redwoods Rising restoration work.
Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve members have completed winterizing two of the seven student cabins, added to the accessible trails around the campus, installed night sky appropriate lighting along trails, and assisted in the restoration of 30,000 acres forest.
“This project fulfills our annual two-week training
requirement by offering high-quality, hands-on experience across multiple building trades,” said Major Josef Kallevig, the officer in charge. “Air Force Civil Engineers bring skilled craftsmen who work closely with our highly capable Yurok Tribe partners to mentor younger airmen and deliver lasting, high-quality results for the park and surrounding community.”
As part of their partnership with the National Park Service, the Yurok Tribe will provide oversight, materials, and specialized trades needed to complete
these projects.
The Yurok Tribe have an unmatched understanding of the landscape and broad working experience with the types of projects undertaken in this program, said Chairman Joseph L. James.
“As a Tribe with veterans of every foreign
war, we are excited to provide the best possible training for the 250 service members,” James said. “It is a huge privilege to share our unique knowledge and skills with those responsible for protecting our homeland.”

A Petition for Probate has been filed by: Shondra Chavez, in the Superior Court of California, County of Del Norte. The petition for probate requests that: Shondra Chavez be appointed as personal representative to administer the estate of the decedent.
The petition requests the decedent’s will and codicils, if any, be admitted to probate. The will and any codicils are available for examination in the file kept by the court. The petition requests authority to administer the estate under the Independent Administration of Estates Act. (This Authority will allow the personal representative to take many actions without obtaining court approval. Before taking certain very important actions, however, the personal representative will be required to give notice to interested persons unless they have waived notice or consented to the proposed action.) The independent administration authority will be granted unless an interested person files an objection to the petition and shows good cause why the court should not grant the authority.
A hearing on the petition will be held in this court as follows: Date: August 8, 2025 Time: 10:00 am Dept.: 2 Address of the Court: 450 H Street, Crescent City, CA 95531
If you object to the granting of the petition, you should appear at the hearing and state your objections or file written objections with the court before the hearing. Your appearance may be in person or by your attorney. If you are a creditor or a contingent creditor of the decedent, you must file your claim with the court and mail a copy to the personal representative appointed by the court within the later of either (1) four months from the date of first issuance of letters to a general personal representative, as defined in section 58(b) of the California Probate Code, or (2) 60 days from the date of mailing or personal delivery to you of a notice under section 9052 of the California Probate Code. Other California statutes and legal authority may affect your rights as a creditor. You may want to consult with an attorney knowledgeable in California law. You may examine the file kept by the court. If you are a person interested in the estate, you may file with the court a Request for Special Notice (form DE-154) of the filing of an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or of any petition or account as provided in Probate Code section 1250.
