Supervisors honor healthcare workers Knox Keranen The Triplicate

After the state dropped most COVID-19 restrictions last month, the county is celebrating the local health care workers who led the charge against the virus. During its first in-person meeting since the onset of the pandemic, the Del Norte Board of Supervisors honored Heather Snow, director of health and human services, and other public

health employees, for their work in battling the crisis, including testing, contract tracing and ongoing vaccine efforts. “There’s been many in our public health department and DHHS who have stepped up during the last year and a half, and this board feels it’s extremely important,” said Supervisor Chris Howard. In addition to coordinating testing, tracing and vaccination efforts, Snow kept the public informed with weekly public

statements regarding the virus’ spread at the beginning pandemic. Dr. Warren Rehwaldt was also instrumental in those efforts, however, he recently retired from his position of public health officer. A farewell luncheon was held for Rehwaldt last weekend, and the county is still searching for his replacement. Howard said the impact of public health workers was especially felt in a county with less people than many public universities.

“Our community; we’re small. We are under 28,000 people, but everybody knows everybody. When everybody knows everybody, it’s more than just a community, these are your friends and neighbors you’re talking about providing service to,” said Howard. Despite the celebration, vaccination rates in the county rank remain among the lowest in the state, which could be an issue with the new Delta variant circulating in California, according

to news reports. As of Monday, 32.7% of people in Del Norte County are fully vaccinated, and 37.2% of residents have received at least one dose. The county also reported 12 new cases, totaling 1,514 confirmed cases since the beginning of the pandemic, and eight deaths. Nevertheless, Supervisor Gerry Hemmingsen was positive about the county’s position. “We’ve got a little ways to go yet, but we’ve made the turn and hopefully things get better.”

The Gasquet Raft Race has survived the COVID-19 pandemic. Hundreds of people from surrounding communities flooded into the small unincorporated place about 18 miles northeast of Crescent City for the 52nd annual raft race Saturday, which was put on hold last year, and is more of a floating costume contest than a race. “Everybody just hangs out and has a good time; floating, shooting people with water guns and the barbeque afterward,” said experienced floater Jeff Simon, who came from

Grants Pass to participate. Nick Hindman and Nick Stevens came from Brookings. As it was their first year participating, they didn’t plan to float very far. “It’s going to be a short ride,” said Stevens. After the long — or short — float, participants flocked to the Gasquet American Legion 548 for live music, craft vendors and a beer tent manned by Port O’ Pints Brewery. The event was created by the Gasquet post in 1969 as a fundraiser for legion’s charitable efforts throughout the year, but it’s free to participate, so all the money the veteran’s

group raises comes from raft race t-shirt sales. Many attendees were sporting t-shirts they had acquired from raft races of decades past. “They’re a collector’s item, we sell out every year,” said Lane Tavasci, assistant event coordinator. Tavasci also said the event has grown dramatically in the past decade. “It’s just kind of the community spirit, most of us are Gasquet neighbors who live up here,” said Tavasci. “I do it because I like giving back to the community.” Jamie Brassard is the post commander at the Gasquet post,

as well as district commander of posts in Del Norte, Humboldt and Mendocino counties. Brassard said the funds from the raft race allow the local legion to assist veterans and their families with food, transportation to doctor’s appointments and accessing their veteran’s benefits, such as health care, which is often bogged down by endless paperwork. “That’s where the American Legion comes in; they go in and get all the paperwork that they need, and help them get everything signed,” said Brassard. Digging to piece together history Archeological site near Bandon could put Coquille Indians in area 13,000 years ago By David Rupkalvis The Triplicate

Almost everyone agrees, ancestors of the Coquille Indian Tribe were the first settlers in what is now the Coos Bay-Bandon region of Oregon. What we may be learning is how long the Tribe has had a presence in the area. For the last three weeks, archeology students from Oregon State University have been excavating a site near Devils Kitchen beach in Bandon. The excavation is the fourth time OSU students have worked to learn about the history of the area, and what they have found could be extraordinary. Loren Davis, a professor of anthropology at OSU, said artifacts found at the digs have been dated back 13,600 years. “This is the ancestors of the Coquille people,” Davis said. “That pit in there goes down to 10-feet deep. Down there, we

have radio carbon going back 13,600 years. If that’s true, this would be the oldest archeological site on the coast of North America. We have more work to do.” On Monday, the students and Davis were back at the site, slowly removing soil inch by inch. The slow, detailed work is necessary to find, protect and record any signs of human activity. Davis said the archeology students look for things most people would miss. For example, a rock that looks to most like a rock, could have significance to archeologists because it might show signs of one time being in a fire. Students pulled out several fire rocks, along with charcoal, while excavating the site Tuesday. The whole time a representative of the Coquille Tribe was watching closely. The Del Norte Warriors look set to play a big role when football returns to College of the Redwoods next year. Four of this year’s graduates recently committed their future to the re-instated program, which will begin play again in the fall of 2022. Del Norte’s Levi Cox-Cooley, Tanner Forkner, Kaleb Price and Michael Germain were among a group of 22 Humboldt-Del Norte League players to show up on campus to sign their letters of commitment last month. The school’s football program was suspended in July of 2020 for budgetary reasons but was re-instated earlier this year on the condition there would be a greater emphasis on academics and local recruitment. New head coach Jason White was hired in April and has immediately set about adding a big foundation of local players, including the four Warriors, with eyes on adding more Del Norte players. “We’re going to have over 40 (local players) I think, so that will be the biggest local group I’ve ever coached at College of the Redwoods,” said White, who previously coached with the program for a decade in the 1990s and early 2000s. “And I’m excited about that.” The four Del Norte players each received all-league recognition during their playing days for the local high school, and all of them are expected to play a key role at CR. Forkner, who was arguably the best defensive player in the H-DNL this past spring, is expected to have an immediate impact at linebacker. “He’s the ultimate kid you want on your team, and not just on the field. It’s his attitude, his leadership, his effort, his intelligence,” said Del Norte head coach Nick White, who is a brother of Jason. “Tanner, for me, it’s not even close, he was by far the best defensive player in the league.” Jason White expects Forkner to be a leader for the Corsairs and loves the work ethic he has shown. “That guy is just intense and extremely physical. You get every pound out of that guy,” the CR coach said. “That’s the kind of guy you want on your team to set the example for the rest of the program, this is how it’s going to be.” Price was a first-team all-league selection this spring and also plans on playing basketball for the Corsairs beginning in 2022. He will play tight end for the football team, but Jason White likes his versatility and hopes to utilize him out wide as well. “What he really does is give us some flexibility on offense,” the CR coach said. “He has the ability to go up and get the ball, and Please see FOOTBALL, Page A2

that’s what he’s extremely good at.” Cox-Cooley missed most of his senior season after suffering an injury in the opening half of the first game. But the standout running back was named Co-Offensive MVP of the Big 4 as a junior and will also be expected to have an immediate impact at the next level. “When I watched him in the first game against Arcata, I could tell he’s a different cat to the rest of the league,” Jason White said. “It’s the way he moves, and he’s got great eyesight, and he can set up blocks really well.” For Cox-Cooley, CR

And get as far as I can with it, and this is a great start and a great opportunity.” Germain, meanwhile, played football this spring for the first time since his freshman year, but he has a big upside, according to Jason White. “I’m curious to see what he can develop into,” the CR coach said. “He’s an athlete.” Germain starred at cornerback for Del Norte, while also seeing plenty of time at running back. The first-team allleague selection is expected to see time at both positions at CR.

Fireworks leave devastation on the beach By Randy Zopf Now that the 4th of July has passed and the revelers have all gone home, the toxic remains of their fireworks are strewn all over the high tide marks at all of the beaches in Del Norte County. These pictures do not do justice to the extent of the problem created by those responsible. There are Styrofoam pellets from mortars and rockets collecting on the sand. They float in the water and can be mistaken for food by the shore birds and ultimately the sea life in the harbor. They will never biodegrade in our lifetimes. There are also remains of bottle rockets and mortars. They contain toxic materials and are polluting the bay - exposing sea life to the dangers of ingestion. Red plastic balls from mortars are also found in the thousands at the high tide marks. They, too, will never biodegrade. So, what is the solution? It’s incumbent upon by those individuals that could care less about the fragile ecosystems to be responsible for hauling away their toxic leftovers.

I remember seeing red ribbons from exploded ordinances - half buried in the sand at South Beach that we tried to rake out but it was futile; there was just too much of the debris and it ultimately floated out into the bay. We also found unexploded fireworks that pose a danger for beach goers. In fact, most of these fireworks are illegal and are bought out of state where they are legal to possess. There is the gravity

of the problem; but it is doubtful that those who purchased them will stop in the future, as law enforcement has their hands tied due to the extent of illegal fireworks ignited in the County every year at our beaches. So, this week I will be on the beaches cleaning up the debris the best I can. Is there a chance that those responsible will join me? I doubt it. They will be back in force next year, polluting one of our most precious resources- our ocean and its beautiful and fragile ecosystems.

Her former husband also served, but battled post-traumatic stress disorder and died by suicide as a result. Now retired from the U.S. Forest Service, Brassard is focusing on expanding the legion’s outreach efforts. Last year, they served about 60 members and their families,

including several homeless veterans. During the pandemic, she started up monthly to-go meals from the legion hall. “I have three guys that are out there. When we do a meal, they come in and tell me what they need,” said Brassard. But, she said she can’t help all of the homeless veterans, as many live deep in nearby forests and don’t want help. In addition to veteran’s services, the legion also hands out scholarships to high school students each year, even if they aren’t from a military family or don’t plan to serve. They also sponsor local baseball teams, and last year, Brassard purchased and distributed Christmas presents to local Gasquet kids who wouldn’t have had presents otherwise, as Toys for Tots was paused due to the pandemic. OBITUARIES Thomas Alva Beers

Friday, July 2, 2021, Thomas (Tom) Alva Beers went to be with the Lord at age 83. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on September 2, 1937. Tom joined the Forest Service in the summer of 1957 where he worked as a firefighter. In 1958 he joined the Navy. He served aboard of the Destroyer, USS Shelton. Upon being honorably discharged he earned rank of Gunner’s Mate 2. In 1962, he rejoined the US Forest Service as a firefighter. He soon worked his way to Tanker Operator, Helitack Foreman, Slash Burning Foreman, and after 32 years retired as Fire Management Officer at the Gasquet Ranger Station. He was was charged with overall operations of many large wildfires across multiple states and forests. His firefighting and weather knowledge skills were trusted, respected and called upon. He was part of the team that was instrumental in developing what is now commonly known as the Incident Command

In his retirement, during the Oregon fires in 1993, Tom was asked to be an Instructor In the Oregon fire schools, training others, including National Guard Reserves, to fight wild land fires. Tom’s service to this community was always with children. Tom participated in many Fourth of July Parades and Tiny Tots program as Smokey Bear or Woodsy Owl. He was President of Babe Ruth Baseball for a time. He spent many years in Boy Scouts running the Pinewood Derby. He also participated in the Boy Scout Day Camp “egg drop” for many years. He loved the outdoors and spent countless hours with his family camping, hiking, fishing, boating and panning for gold. One of his favorite hikes was taking as many as 18 young family nieces and nephews of various ages up Mount Gregory in Montague, California. His love for nature inspired many around him to learn about wildflowers, wildlife, birds, weather and event the stars.

DNACA announces completed artwork by grant awardee Del Norte Association for Cultural Awareness recently announced 2020 Funds for Artists’ Resilience public art grant awardee Jessica Slayton has completed her artwork project. Inspired by the public arts project of the 1930s, FAR was an initiative that made grants to artists who experienced hardship during the COVID-19 pandemic, and empowered them to produce art to inspire the community. The grants were made possible by the Humboldt Area Foundation, through The Ink People in Humboldt county, and included awards to artists in Contributed photo Del Norte, Humboldt and Jessica Slayton, who received a grant from DNACA, Trinity counties. shows off her completed mural at the College of the Slayton’s project is a mural painted onto a 24 x 8-foot shipping container at the Food Forest Project, located at the College of the Redwoods Del Norte Campus, at 883 W. Washington Boulevard in Crescent City. The shipping container functions as a community farm stand and tool lending library. Leila Moore also contributed to the project. In her grant application, Slayton stated “The mural represents our local area and the people it holds. Through my art, I hope to give the community a sense of inclusion and openness... (and) I want the imagery to inspire (us) to eat healthy, local, and traditional food.” Slayton designed the mural with Tolowa, Hmong and Hispanic designs to represent those cultures as well. Stephanie La Torre, executive director of DNACA, said “We are grateful to those who made this program possible, and we were happy to be able to fund local artists to create beautiful and thoughtful art for our community. These artworks will be available for many years to come, and celebrate the resilience of our community members.” In 2020, FAR issued a call for public art proposals expressing the theme of resilience. In Del Norte county, two FAR grants were awarded.

Letter to the Editor Kite Festival says farewell This should be the weekend of the Southern Oregon Kite Festival. Unfortunately, it is not and never will be again. The SOKF was a huge benefit to the Brookings-Harbor area, bringing visitors from over the West. COVID-19 cancelled the 2020 and 2021 festivals and the Port of Brookings-Harbor informed us, last year, to not plan on using the Kite Field after 2021. A few years ago, when the port considered exorbitant rental fees for the Kite Field, the SOKF Committee searched, unsuccessfully, for another local site. We searched again after the port’s declaration and still found nothing suitable. With no

location for a Kite Festival, the committee decided to dissolve the SOKF. We invested much hard work over the last decade to produce this all-volunteer festival, and we would like to thank the numerous people who have shared that task with us as committee members. Even more than them, we wish to thank the hundreds of other volunteers who helped us produce this festival, unique because of its tiny field and enthusiastic audience, both of which made it a festival to which kite fliers begged and wheedled to be invited. We will never forget the fact that it was the entire Brookings-Harbor area and its businesses which made this festival possible in

1993. Without continuing support from sponsors who donated cash or merchandise, this festival would never have been or continued for 27 years. Special thanks should be given to Grocery Outlet which never failed to support the SOKF, Oceanside Diner which fed the fliers free breakfasts during festival weekend, and Wild River Pizza which always threw a farewell party for the fliers. There is a possibility that the Southern Oregon Kite Festival will morph into another unique kite festival in Crescent City, so keep your eyes on the sky. As Lake Powell dwindles, wonders open up By Tim Treuer On May 9, protected by neoprene, I bobbed around in a flooded canyon in Utah’s Lake Powell. The reservoir had fallen below 35 percent full, which gave me the unique opportunity to free-dive through an underwater bridge that was now suddenly within reach. I eyed the 100 feet of sheer sandstone rising out of the water. For much of the past half-century, boats that entered upper Fiftymile Canyon in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area could blithely float over Gregory Natural Bridge with about 40 feet of clearance. Not anymore. Two decades of drought had diminished the lake, and motorized river traffic could no longer float overtop. Now, however, a new passageway to Fiftymile’s inner sanctum was possi-

ble. That gave me a chance to become (possibly) the first person to pass under Gregory Natural Bridge since the archway was drowned 52 years ago. Doing so would require swimming underwater while holding my breath, something I’d practiced over a decade and a half of visiting coral reefs. I’m far from a professional free diver, but I have been known to spend a minute or two communing with croaking toadfish 50 feet beneath the waves. I filled my lungs one last time and plunged down, scissor-kicking my way into the bracing, turbid water. I’d spent the previous week with 11 other Alaskans in southeastern Utah, negotiating the rapids of the Escalante River, an underappreciated gem that used to join the Colorado River but now feeds into Lake Powell. UNGRATEFUL DAUGHTER RESORTS TO INTIMIDATION DEAR ABBY: My 40-year-old daughter has never worked. She never married but has a 5-year-old son and is expecting a girl in six months. My husband bought a house for her to live in, but she didn’t like it. When he passed away, I bought her a different house and sold the first one. I footed all the bills on both houses. I used my savings to pay cash for the second home. Since she didn’t like that one either, we put it on the market, and it quickly sold. I put both our names on that house, thinking that way she wouldn’t be able to take out a loan against it without my knowledge. My daughter wants me to split the proceeds, although she never paid a dime for it. She refuses to sign the closing documents unless I agree. She has 60 days to move, but I don’t want her to move in with me. If I don’t agree, I’ll never see my grandkids again. She’s been in rehab for drugs and alcohol several times. She’s clean now because she’s pregnant. Should I let her move in? Shell have half the money from the house, so she could live on it for a couple of years and then would probably be on the street. -- MOM OF A WOMAN-CHILD DEAR MOM: It’s time to allow her to do something she should have done 20 years ago: assume responsibility for the life choices she has made. However, since I’ve become dependent on him like this, he has started criticizing me about my weight, my wardrobe and lack of exercise. He buys our favorite foods, stores them where I can’t reach them and eats them in front of me. He says he’s no longer attracted to me because of my size and rarely kisses me anymore. We had a healthy, frequent sex life before the accident. during its spring flood. But word had trickled out that pack-rafts and patience could get you down the last 40 miles of it before it reached Lake Powell, even during low flows. Upriver in the town of Escalante, a water gauge gave a reading of just half a cubic foot per second for much of our journey, which began at Fence Canyon, 40 miles down the river. Only the cumulative output of spring-fed side canyons kept us moving. When we arrived at Lake Powell’s “full pool line,” where the reservoir used to start when Glen Canyon Dam was at capacity, we were in for a shock. It would have been impossible to guess that water once covered the banks; now, cottonwoods three stories tall bordered the river. It would take us another day and a half of increasingly arduous travel to finally enter Lake Powell. As the shoreline vegetation shrank, then disappeared, we gave up trying to float and began walking our boats. The braided river channel was choked with sediment that

broke off from the banks in basketball-sized chunks. A rock pinnacle called Explorer Island was ringed with cracked mud studded with dry buoys. I’ve worked as a field ecologist for almost as long as the Western Rockies have been in a state of drought, but I’ve never seen a place so clearly in the throes of change. In 36 hours, we’d rewound the tape on 20 years of ecological succession — from riparian forest back to mud. We were ready to quit sloshing through the Escalante River when we finally reached the depleted reservoir and our rented houseboat. Then it took us less than an hour to reach our goal, the place where Gregory Natural Bridge lurked beneath us. There, time compressed as I dropped underwater and passed through a shimmering boundary between the sun-warmed surface layer and the colder depths. Del Norte RAC meeting date set The Gasquet Ranger District/ Smith River National Recreation Area recently announced the Del Norte County Resource Advisory Committee will be holding a virtual public meetings July 20 from 4 -8 p.m. via Microsoft Teams app (Click here to join the meeting – download the Teams App prior OR call-in: 1-323-886-7051, passcode 763211748#). Additional meetings may be scheduled on July 21 and 22 to discuss any remaining agenda topics. The main purpose of the meeting is to review and recommend existing potential projects eligible for funding and solicit new project proposals. Additional agenda items to be covered during the meeting include election of committee chairperson, review FACA regulations, update committee governing documents, review past practices and determine a new process for project proposals and provide updates regarding the status of Secure Rural Schools Program and Title II funding. properly. If human remains had been found, and none have in the four years of digging, work would have stopped immediately. Davis said students from OSU have dug at Devils Kitchen in 2000, 2011 and 2013. The 2021 dig is the first time many students have been outdoors doing a real excavation in more than a year due to COVID-19 restrictions. Davis said getting the students back out into the field is a big step toward making them archeologists. “We get to be outside, you’re working with other people and you live in a field camp,” he said. “There’s a lot to learn other than archeology.” At the site, students slowly dig into the soil, placing all the dirt into buckets. Each bucket was then sifted through to look for even the smallest artifact. Davis said every piece that was found helps tell

the story of the area. “In the years, we were doing some testing to get an idea of what was here,” he said. “During the excavation, we realized there was a really long record of people being here.” Davis said while the artifacts go back more than 10,000 years, most of the confirmed activity at the site is newer. “The most intensive use of the site is in the last 3,000 years,” he said. “It would be ancestors of the modern Native American people.” While the students from Oregon State have permission to find, remove and map artifacts they find, Davis urged anyone else who finds artifacts to leave them where they are. “Artifacts on public lands are protected by state law,” he said. “What they can do is they can take a picture of it to enjoy it later. They can also contact the agency that owns the land. If you pick something up and take it, you’re erasing history.” And every piece of that

history is important to understand the people who came before us. As archeologists, the challenge is getting enough pieces to tell the story, Davis said. “It’s one piece of a larger puzzle of what people were doing,” he said. “It isn’t like one piece tells the entire story. We’re trying to piece it back together again. We want to map where everything is in the ground.” At Devils Kitchen, the archeology students were excavating a piece of land up above the beach. To their south ran Crooked Creek. Davis said it is likely the creek ran through the area they were digging at before it changed routes. When the students finish their dig this week, they will fill in the hole. Davis said every dig is filled in for safety and aesthetics. While this group of students will return home for the rest of the summer, Davis and the Oregon State program will move to Eastern Oregon and start searching in a new location.
