Sheriff Posse Vehicle Private Funds Coming in… Push Over the Finish Line for July 4th Parade

Del Norte Sheriff Garrett Scott is pleased to report the 501c3 Del Norte Sheriff Posse is reaching for the $10,000 private funding for the 1954 Merced County Patrol vehicle.

Big thank you to major contributors Mimi Stephens of Bay Side Realty, Bill Crowell and Shawna Hyatt, from Crescent City. Why a Posse Vehicle? In the old days, possession helped the Sheriff with all matters legal. Posses offer a different kind of assistance to law enforcement, today. Private funding is one of those functions.

The question was asked, why not fix potholes and private streets with these funds. Good Point!

With all the rancor and division in our political world, lots of anger, hostility and intolerance, wouldn’t it be nice to put a smile on folks’ faces who live here?

The antique vehicle will be a parade regular (hopefully for this upcoming parade), car shows, store openings in Del Norte and a regular at each of DNUSD 11 schools, giving our kids a ride in the Posse vehicle.

Lots of ways to make a drop off donation:

June 14th was a Special Day Across America: a Couple of Birthdays and a Protest

June 14 was a special day across Del Norte, the Golden State and America.

June 14 was Flag Day commemorating the adoption of the flag of the United States on June 14, 1777 by Resolution of the Second Continental Congress. The proposal of Flag Day goes back to 1861 in support for the Union side in the Civil War.

President Woodrow Wilson issued a presidential Proclamation designating June 14 as Flag Day. In 1949 National Flag Day was officially established by an Act of Congress.

• The Army celebrated its 250th anniversary with a parade of heavy tanks, armored vehicles and thousands of soldiers showcasing all military areas.

• President Trump celebrated his 79th birthday. Happy Birthday, Mr. President.

June 14 also was No Kings Day in Crescent City and hundreds of other locations across the country.

An estimated 300-325 individuals from Del Norte, Curry and Humboldt counties crowded along the narrow sidewalk in front of the Fairgrounds and CVS

parking lots along Highway 101 North. The event was without incident. The passion, anger, fury of those attending the event was palpable: signs expressing odious hatred for the President were omnipresent.

Event coordinator David Wylie was resolute in his opinion of the President. “We’ve had enough. We do not accept usurption of California’s rights. We believe in due process and oppose Trump’s abuse of the Constitution.” The group’s focus is and remains to counter authoritarian policies of the (Trump) Administrstation.

Wylie spoke on behalf of group called Del Norte Indivisible, part of a network of 2,000 local groups. In the Del Norte Indivisible literature, Wylie warned of “…facing the brunt of right wing, ideological attacks. Though espousing “nonviolent civil resistance only and always,” The tone of intolerance and disdain for Trump was profound and distinguishable.

The Triplicate journeyed along the heavily packed sidewalk and encountered no shortage of the “F” word and other associated vulgarity, all protected under the 1st Amendment to Free Speech but nontheless, disturbing. The evidence of hostility was blunt.

No Bail for Walters, Senior

Russell Walters, Sr, father of Russell Walters. Jr. is charged with Accessory After the Fact, alleging the elder Walters helped his 17 year old son evade law enforcement, following a May 28 shooting at the Jed Smith Center along 101North, in Crescent City. The duo was eventually captured and arrested in Citrus Heights in Sacramento County. Russell, Senior has been detained in the Del Norte County Jail. He appeared in Dept. 3 and sought bail for the single Accessory charge, a felony. Judge Karen Olson denied bail due to a lack of factual information. The Honorable Judge Olson stated she would review the Senior Russell’s application for bail, July 1st.

Meanwhile, Russell, Jr. has been detained on a number of felony charges and has been detained in an unidentified Juvenile facility outside of Del Norte County. No further information has been made public.

The Triplicate took pictures, sometimes from the curb. An unidentified male sarcastically warned the reporter of traffic into the street and then expressed hope a vehicle might hit the staffer. Disturbing!

During an interview with a couple, a male a Healthcare worker and the female claimed to be a doctor. When queried further about her medical expertise, she admitted she was a psychologist. Both expressed the opinion of 100% support for Due Process before any deportation, even for dangerous felons such as murderers, rapists, DUI persons where a death has occurred, child molesters, drug and human traffickers and other serious felony criminals. Fairly typical of those attending, this couple echoed its anger at the Trump Administration.

Though the event had no violence, and a large group of recalcitrants, there was no police or law enforcement at the June 14th rally.

Del Norte Invisible was formed two months ago assigned to address perceived Trump Administration abuse auuthority. The group claims 167 members.

Wrongdoing in Fatal Shooting

Crescent City Police Officer

Ethan Miller has been cleared of any wrongdoing in the fatal shooting of a resident of the Surf Apartments on the February 17th incident. The victim of the shooting was 67 year old tenant John Spencer. Officer Miller accompanied by Sgt. Ed Wilson, responded to the Surf Apartments on H St regarding a report of an individual with a gun at approximately 4:20PM. Sgt. Wilson evacuated the building at 4:30 and Officer Miller, with a pistol pointed at his head by Spencer, attempted

to talk Spencer into lowering his gun for approximately 30 minutes. Officer Miller’s efforts to mitigate the situation were not successful. Officer Miller fired several shots into the lower abdomen of Spencer. He was pronounced dead on the scene. Miller surrendered his Go Pro The CHP conducted an investigation and released its findings to Del Norte District Attorney Katie Micks, last week who forwarded the final report to Chief Richard Griffin. Micks responded, “Officer Ethan Miller acted in justified self-defense and his defense of others.”

CHP Officer Adriana Warner, speaking on behalf of the California Highway Patrol, concurred there was no criminal liability. Chief Griffin said there was no violation of CCPD policy.

A Fire Chief, Three Fire Captains, and Now an Administrative Lieutenant:

Just How Many More Paid Firemen?

Despite being assured by Crescent Fire and Rescue’s Chief Kevin Carey, the Crescent Fire and Rescue (CCFR) does not intend to stray from its volunteer roots. The recent push by the Chief to include an administrative lieutenant in this year’s City budget (2025-2026) seems wildly at odds with his statement. Adding to his claim a professional urban style department is not in the future of the CCFR due to lack of the necessary funding to accomplish the formation of such a department.

So, just where is the funding going come from when the CCFR is already on the hook for the Chief’s salary, his administrative assistant, and three recently hired career fire captains? Then most recently, he was found trying to quietly add an administrative lieutenant to the already growing population of paid fire employees. Will this become the Chief’s strategy to add paid employees during each budget process to complete what is clearly his goal of a professional fire department? Not so fast, Chief!

The newly proposed position of Administrative Lieutenant at $130,000 per year is a 9 to 5 job which would couple administration with firefighting duties ostensibly to cover daytime fire calls when volunteers are most likely to be working. Clearly the picture now becomes a daytime call for services provided by the full-time Chief, a Fire Captain also hired, and the recently hired Admin-

istrative Lieutenant. Sounds more like a hired full-time fire crew than an all-volunteered crew. So, what say you, Chief Carey, professional or volunteer? The truth now.

In a world where fire calls are among the least attended by the volunteer fire companies in all of Del Norte County, why is there a push by our local fire chief for more expensive fire equipment (near $750,000), more paid employees, and more attention to the fire side of the volunteer fire departments than where they truly spent a vast majority of call outs, medical emergencies?

Clearly, the Chief’s ambitions are moving towards a professional urban style department, and with it his leadership is going down the wrong track. The current hires of three fire captains are not only without merit, but pointlessly wasteful. The addition of any more paid fire personnel is wildly out of touch with the community he purports to serve. He, Chief Carey, needs to get a grip on his ambitions. If Chief Carey cannot conform to the reality the community cannot afford his fantasies, then the Crescent City Council and the Board of the Crescent Fire Protection District need to rein him in.

Barring that, if neither the City Council, nor the Crescent Fire Protection District (CFPD) chooses to act, City residents and the property owners in the CFPD in the district can count an effort by Chief Carey for a sharp increase in local taxes. The City will likely resort to

Farewell to a Local Treasure:

Saying Goodbye to Cristina’s Mexican Restaurant

In a small town, there are places that become more than businesses—they become part of our identity. For years, Cristina’s Mexican Restaurant wasn’t just where we went for enchiladas, tamales, and their famously delicious cheeseburgers; it was where we gathered. Birthdays were celebrated there. Graduations toasted. First dates nervously launched over shared baskets of chips and salsa. And now, with its closing, our community feels a little less like home.

The Ramirez family brought more than authentic Mexican cuisine to our town—they brought heart. Whether it was Adolfo and Claudia greeting guests at the door with a smile, or Christina and Aurea remembering your usual order, they treated everyone who walked in as family. Their restaurant was a bridge between generations, languages, and neighbors—something rare and invaluable in any community.

The closure of Cristina’s is a reminder that even beloved institutions are not immune to the pressures of rising costs, long hours, and the challenges of small business ownership; it takes a toll on many family-owned establishments. Still, it’s hard not to feel a deep sense of loss when a place so deeply woven into our town’s fabric turns off its lights for the last time.

But the impact of the Ramirez family doesn’t end at the closing of their doors. They have shaped our community with their generosity, resilience, and spirit. Whether it was donating meals to local fundraisers, supporting school events, delivering food to homebound customers, selling hungry teenagers bean burritos for one dollar, or simply being a place people felt welcome, they showed what it means to care about where you live and who you serve.

We thank them—not just for the meals, but for the memories. For the stories shared across their tables. For the laughter echoing through their dining room. And for reminding us that the best communities are built around food, family, and connection.

They may no longer serve meals, but the Ramirez family has already left a legacy that will nourish our hearts for years to come.

Ann (McClendon) Rosenbaum Crescent City, CA

an increase in sales tax, while the CFPD will initiate an effort to add to the already yearly increasing fire district assessment with another higher property tax assessment. Other citizens in the County will have the delightful task of paying into the City’s increased sales tax with no benefit to them at all. Thanks a lot, Chief.

Such is the world we currently live in the State of California and Del Norte County where taxes never seem to match with the services being offered. Less need for services offered by an ambitious Fire Chief, yet clearly the direction the fire department is headed will no longer be volunteer. Fire service, ambulance service, rescue service, and everything in between, paid for by you, the PUBLIC. No consideration for cost or the financial wellbeing of those who live in the County.

This is reckless! Services and employees of the fire department, the community simply cannot afford. An ambitious Fire Chief who is blind to the community’s actual requirements for service and ability to pay for those services. Get a grip Kevinn Carey. Know your community and the services absolutely necessary for its wellbeing before you satisfy your personal ambitions. If you cannot rein it in, then know this, We cannot afford you or your “urban-style salary”.

Master Welder Emerges After Devastating Accident

Back in 2015, Jager was graduating from Del Norte High School with plans to join his family’s roofing business.

Jager took his off-road vehicle up to the Oregon Sand Dunes in Winchester Bay and experienced a devastating accident severely injuring his spine and his ability to walk.

Jager’s roofing career was over before it began.

Family friend Aaron Herring, fellow fabricator, helped rebuild his ’69 Toyota Cruiser. Jager began his own arduous rehabilitation and today walks with braces and cane but nonetheless, he walks! Herring introduced Jager to the world of metal fabrication / welding and Voila… Stoneworx Metal Fabrication was founded 18 months ago.

The road from bright future to near disaster and back to bright future was an amazing journey involving family and lots of friends.

This master welder is an inspiration to all who may have experienced a similar tragedy.

As one of the very few metal professionals in Del Norte, his services are in high demand.

Naturalization Ceremony Takes Place in Redwoods Parks

June 13, a group of 40 legal immigrants raised their right hand and became the newest citizens of the United States. Among the breathtaking trees of the Redwood National and State Parks, the applicants come from 18 countries around the globe, including, Laos, Mexico, Portugal, United Kingdom and Vietnam.

The event opened with the National Anthem sung by Park Ranger Ian Phillips. On hand to witness the ceremony were District Superintendent Victor Bjelajac and Redwood National Park acting- Superintendent Leonel Arguello who equated the symbolic connection between the support citizens in America give one another and how Redwood trees roots support each other.

The group stood in awe beneath the 286 foot-tall Big Tree. Arguello continued, “Congratulations- not just on earning your citizenship, but on bringing your story, your heritage, your courage into the fabric of America because you’re proof that the American story is still being written- not just in cities and towns , but right here in the Redwoods. You now belong.”

The United States Citizen and Immigration Services and National Park Service have signed a Memorandum of Understanding which advances the meaning and stature of citizenship by building connections between new citizens and America’s parks. This agreement has led to special naturalization ceremonies held at many of the 430 National Parks. Naturalization ceremonies have been held at Ellis Island, Yosemite National Park, Cesar Chavez Monument, Acadia National Park. Death Valley Park, and many sites around the National Mall and, of course, Redwood National and State Parks

Donna and Dorlin Palmer, Eileen Friedlander, Eunice Anthony, and Billy and Sonny Ives. As an only child, he spent his days with his cousins Patricia and Carol Grant, along with other Nespelem neighborhood kids.

He attended the old Nespelem Grade School, walking across the bridge with the neighborhood pack each day. With the Great Depression, followed by WWII, both his parents worked and he was largely cared for by his maternal grandmother, Susie Grant. He was a 1953 Oroville High School graduate. As a teen he began working in his family’s grocery stores in Tonasket and Pateros, as well as working on his family’s ranch in Oliver, B.C. From 1963 to 1974 he worked for Washington Fish and Game raising fish and any other little critters that needed a helping hand. David suggested Mount Hull for the return of Big Horn sheep to the Okanogan. Seven Big Horn sheep had unexpectedly become available to the state that could prove best sheep habitat. Olympia said, “That kind of study takes years.” David said, “You’ve got a good pilot and

a good aerial photographer. Fly today, sent the photos tomorrow. They are the sheep experts.” Washington got the sheep and they were released on Mount Hull! In 1974 he returned to ranching on the Prince & Prince Ranch in Midway B.C. By the 1990’s David found himself restoring an abandoned fish hatchery on Smith River in the California Redwoods. Assisted by the boys from Bar-O Boys Ranch, they hand-excavated the blocked fish ladder, returning salmon and steelhead passage to the Smith River system. He taught the boys math, construction, aquaculture, gardening and animal care along with fishing. He remembers them all with love and pride, and with hope and prayers for their futures.

David married Sybil Enschede in 1957 and together they raised four children, to the delight of his parents.

His second marriage was to Judith Goode where he got a kick out of the antics of his stepsons, “the wild Goode brothers”, with continued hope and prayers for their futures. A third marriage to Cindy Jean Yaple provided “the best little fishin’ buddy a guy could ask for.” He and Cindy Jean were able to fulfill a dream of a trip up the Alcan Highway to Alaska.

The past seven years David lived at the Coulee Medical Center where he has planned, planted and cared for their patio gardens and continued to encourage beginning gardens and farmers.

David is preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, wife Cindy Jean Prince, godfather George Ginzberg, beloved babysitter Lillian, cousins Patricia (Grant) Lautensleger and Ben Prince, nephew Ben Boetthcher, and so many friends from Nespelem, Oroville,

and across the country. He is survived by his four children: Kim Prince, Martin Prince (Joanne), Stephanie Smith (Eric) and Aaron Prince (Lisa), their children David, Alexa Rose, Sheridan, Caleb, Luke, Sam, Cameron and Aliya. His cousins Jim Prince and Carol (Grant) Smith; nephews Daniel, Caleb and Seth, and nieces Sarah and Abby. Priest and friend Father Seamus Kerr; godmother Mary Greenleaf. Friend and housemate Gayle Minor and her son Raymond Brewer. He is also survived by all the young men at Prince & Prince Ranch and all those that chose to call him Dad, Pop, Mr. Dave or Grandpa; Judith Kaylor and her children Chris and Adrianna; Timothy Brooks, Terese Rowe, Frieda Orsborn and her son Hector; Thomas and Delphine Doyle Finkbonner and their three children. Volunteers Needed for Annual

Post 4th of July Beach Clean-Up

Redwood Parks Conservancy partnership with California State Parks, the National Park Service, Smith River Alliance, CalTrans and the Del Norte Solid Waste Authority invites community members to participate in the annual July 5 Beach Clean-Up event.

Volunteers will meet at 9AM Saturday, July 5 at the parking lot next to Schmidt’s House of Jambalaya located on Anchor Way, Crescent City. Coffee and a brief safety talk will be provided before the clean-up begins. The event will focus on three coastal sites: South Beach, Crescent Beach and Elk Creek. With an estimated 5,000

to15,000 visitors descending on Del Norte County over the Independence Day holiday, post-celebration pollution poses a serious environmental threat. Last year, volunteers gathered up 3200 lbs of trash and fireworks debris. This year’s clean-up will concentrate efforts along a two mile stretch of Crescent City’s’ South Beach, aiming to protect marine wildlife and the broader ocean ecosystem. All supplies will be supplied. Volunteers are encouraged to wear closed-toe shoes and long pants for safety.
