Harbor Commissioners Firm Up Contract with Harbormaster
Disruptions Continue...
BY ROGER GITLIN Country Media, Inc.
The Crescent City Harbor Commission has ironed out details of the new five year Harbormaster contract
• The contract offered and acknowledged by Harbormaster
Mike Rademaker is $114,000 per annum, with a buy out clause of three to six months salary.
• Rademaker waived his medical benefits package of approximately $16,000 to be supplanted by a housing allowance equal to the medical benefits package.
• The contract is effective immediately.
The vote to confirm Rademaker’s permanent status was 4-1, with Commissioner Annie Nehmer dissenting.
Nehmer shared with those in attendance, her belief of the imminent demise of the harbor’s financial status and held Rade-
Sutter Breaks Ground on New Unit to those in Behavioral Health Crisis

BY ROGER GITLIN Country Media, Inc.
This past Monday, the ceremonial groundbreaking of the Sutter Coast Hospital (SCH) Emergency Psychiatric Assessment, Treatment and Healing (EmPATH) Unit is now underway. The Unit will serve the Behavioral and Psychiatric needs for children and adults experiencing acute psychiatric crises. EmPath is expected to be complete within 10 months. The Unit will encompass 3,000 sq. ft. The design features a calming environment with the aim to stabilize patients in a more appropriate setting. The unit follows a nationally recognized care model known to reduce wait times and improve outcomes.
Funding for the project was $4 million which comes from Proposition 1. SCH also received an additional $2 million grant from Please see CRISIS Page 3
maker responsible for contributing to this condition. She said,“
The Harbor is on a trajectory to be bankrupt in four to nine months.”
Rademacker has served as the interim harbormaster for six months, effective October 1, 2024 and running through the end of May. During the interim period, the harbormaster has cut expenses and bolstered revenue significantly, as reported in the May 28 Triplicate.
Nonetheless, a small group of disgruntled individuals, including Nehmer continue to attack Rademaker for events he could not control or is responsible for. Former Del Norte supervisor Gerry Hemingsen was one of the individuals who called for the dismissal of the harbormaster. Hemmingsen stated from the dias he could see no progress on-going on harbor projects and called for commissioners to curtail the five year contract

“down to one or two years.” His comments were preceded by snide comments directed at a member of the audience.
Another disgruntled speaker accused Rademaker of lying and misrepresenting the harbor’s dire financial status. And another individual yelled from his audi-
ence seat, demanding immediate answers to his questions. His behavior was out of order but not acknowledged by the Board Chairman. The facts are clear.
Rademaker inherited massive debt from the loss of the Fashion

City and Fire Department Show Their Cards… Potholes or Professional Fire Department
BY
ROGER GITLIN Country Media, Inc.
Is the Crescent City Fire and Rescue moving to an all-paid Fire department?
That question was posed to City Manager Eric Wier and Fire Chief Kevin Carey, in a May 6th email with no response from either.
In the shadow of the appointments of three paid City captain positions, last year and the approval of an official bargaining unit for the paid captains, The Triplicate posed the following queries to Wier and Carey:
• Do the City and Fire Department anticipate more fire / rescue employees? If Yes, please share with the public the costs associated with growing the Department.
• What is the funding source to transition from an all-volun-
teer Fire department to a paid employee department. The response to these questions was crickets.
Apparently, the cat is out of the bag and, perhaps without intending to “show the cards,” Fire Chief Carey plans to grow his department, asking the City Council, at the recent City Budget Workshop, support for hiring a Lieutenant administrator to oversee operations at a cost of $130,000 per annum. The Triplicate asked how the co-funding by the City and Crescent Fire Protection District will be handled. What will be the impact on a beleaguered public? More crickets…If the City and CFPD move forward on this transition like a big city department, wouldn’t the City be expected to tell the public?
Funding to pay for an all-paid

department would possibly call for an increase in the sales tax and/or property tax assessment. Will this possible expansion affect how the City and County addresses the plethora of potholes on city and county streets?
Additionally, The County supports a full vetting of Del Norte Ambulance (DNAMB) to consider reconsider replacing the four decades old DNAMB, with emergency funding from the Department of Health and Human Services. Funds have been

dispersed to consultant EndPoint for $97,000 and expected to exceed $160,000 before the 2028 decision on DNAMB’s future. And no emergency has been articulated by DHHS. This is a continuing story.

Opinion & Letters
Guest Commentary - Opinion by Samuel Strait
Anatomy of a BOS Meeting: Time to Ask for Our Money Back?
It seems as a regular feature in Del Norte County we cannot elect representatives with any sort of skill level to employ common sense and work towards improving the lives of those who are their respective constituents. There is an appalling sense the five who claim to be representative of the needs of County residents, our elected Supervisors, have no interest in preforming other than for the sake of the County’s unelected.
In this case, I am not referring to those whose job descriptions have no fancy titles before their names. Titles which are often meaningless as to what exactly those unelected bureaucrats do for their often-breath-taking salaries.
These are the six-figure salaried bureaucrats whose fingerprints are all over nearly every item that appears on the Board of Supervisors(BOS) agenda every time the BOS meets. No serious questions leading to clarity, or efforts towards an unambiguous portrait of what is being voted almost universally 4-0, “traveling man” Supervisor Howard on the road again. The BOS can only charitably be referred to as the “governing” body in Del Norte County.
Most recently, the May 27th BOS meeting consisted of twenty-two items on the consent agenda passed 4-0 with near indifference to any public comment or participation by the public. Many of the items ripe for movement to the general business section of the Board’s business where at least some discussion might occur. Ten minutes of the Board’s brutal and tiring agenda to consider sixty five percent of the entire body of work.
Following the exhausting trial of “rubber stamping” County bureaucrat demands on the Consent Agenda, the five “Easter Island Statues,” our representatives, had to contend with two public comments, neither of which required ear plugs to be removed, a ceremonial presentation, such a trial, a report from Area One Aging, and the most contentious item on the whole agenda $1,500 to be spent on an additional non maintained county road.
The contentious issue, whether or not county money would be spent on a nearby private road, produced a brief but lively exchange bordering on the ridiculous. The $1500 pile of rock must be deposited in such a manner not a single stone should violate county policy of no maintenance
by the county of “private road.” Easter Island Supervisor “Consolation Prize,” Valerie Starkey looking after the public “pocketbook” unless it is a government funded junket to Philly was, “On the job”. Well, you have to believe two Easter Island Statues are always better than one when it comes to traveling across the Country on the taxpayer’s dime. Think of all the “miles” to be accumulated.
Despite all the frowning faces from the Consolation Prize, she gritted it out with an AYE vote to continue the expected 4-0 vote on issues. Fellowship with other board members won out over standing on principal. Was that a stiff upper lip from the Consolation Prize or conceding defeat over her concerns rather than rocking the boat of uniformity? Pretty weak.
General business trundled on with two hires at step C, a general practice for new hires at Health and Human Services. After all, DHHS cannot seem to find anyone to work at the level new hires used to start. Got to make sure employees who found it necessary to work up to step C, often several years with a level of experience acquired, should be able to feel a level of disrespect shown to them by the
new hiring practices. What a considerate BOS! No worries about employee retention when the new policy is waved in front of those who have been employed for a long while.
Since the Board has strict instructions to economize from County Counsel, a quick dash through spending $910,449, most connected to DHHS, we have arrived at ADJOURNMENT. What an effort at being completely irrelevant towards governing Del Norte County. Clearly five stones from Easter Island could have accomplished just as much, and besides we wouldn’t have to pay the “Stones”. The maintenance would be near zero. More savings to the taxpayer yet.
Well, there you have it. Is this the kind of governing body we, the citizens of Del Norte County, truly desire to represent us? While we may be out of luck to ask for our money back, these five slackers can be replaced. Is it in the DNA of Del Norte County to find new leadership who will work for the benefit of all who live in the County, or is the spirit of citizens who led to resurgence of the County after the tidal wave of 1964 Gone with the Wind?
Sutter Coast Hospital Receives National Accreditation for Family Medicine and Rural Residency Program
Program enhances ability to recruit, train future physicians, expand access for patients
CRESCENT CITY, Calif.
(May 21, 2025) – Sutter Coast Hospital received national accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education for a new family medicine rural residency program set to start in 2026.
The program represents a strategic opportunity to address physician shortages as rural communities face persistent gaps accessing primary care. It also helps increase training pathways in areas like Crescent City so more patients may benefit from sustained, high-quality care.
“We are innovating to create more pathways to build the physician workforce across our communities,” said May Hong, M.D., family medicine physi-
cian and program director of Sutter Coast Hospital’s Family Medicine Residency Program.
“This program cultivates a more sustainable source of talented physicians dedicated to practicing in rural areas many of us call home.”
The program will emphasize comprehensive, community-focused training designed to prepare learners for practice in rural settings. Physician residents will spend their first year in Sacramento, building a strong clinical foundation. During their second and third years, residents will train in Crescent City, with experiences in both the hospital and community clinic.
Under the guidance of board-certified clinicians, phy-
PoliCe Blotter
sician residents will train inside the 49-bed hospital in inpatient medicine, emergency medicine, obstetrics, pediatrics, behavioral health and other electives tailored to their career goals. In the community clinic, they will focus on rural primary care and population health. They will gain experience in tracking patients’ health over time and the delivering services in resource-limited environments.
“Our goal is to train physicians who are not only clinically excellent, but also deeply connected to the communities they serve,” said Danielle Preston, Sutter Coast Hospital’s residency program supervisor. Throughout their training, residents will receive hands-on instruction in

both inpatient and outpatient settings, developing procedural skills, leadership abilities and meaningful relationships within the community. The program is designed to fully integrate learners into rural life and prepare them for the unique challenges and rewards of rural medical practice.”
“Our system remains on pace to become one of the largest community-based health care training institution in Northern California,” said Lindsay Mazotti, M.D., Sutter Health’s chief medical officer of medical education and science. “By achieving accreditation for this new program, we are better positioned to lead the delivery of high-quality care in communities
across the state, equipping learners with comprehensive clinical skills, relationship-building experience and a commitment to advancing community health in rural areas.”
The three-year program will begin recruiting physician residents in fall 2025 via the National Residency Match Program. The program aims to train six residents, focusing on two residents per year.

Crescent City Emblem Club #175, member Esther Cupp conducted a patriotic lesson to 172 Crescent Elk 8th Graders, May 30, at the school auditorium. Esther identified the nine different flags
from the Colonial period to the POW flag a identify over the And present day 50 star and America its rich history.
The flags of each era were borrowed from the Brookings Emblem Club with thanks and deep gratitude.
The motto of this event was entitled “Through the storm cloud, we gather.”

Blacksmith arbitration case and the natural disaster from the Tsunami, 2011. Both encumbrances drain harbor revenue of approximately $750,000 annually for the next nine years. Harbor financial advisor/ bookeeper Sandy Moreno was candid with her concerns about the dire conditions, expressed hope that the harbor could be saved. Moreno also admonished an audience member… “Why are you suing the harbor and threatening more lawsuits into the future? Why are you doing this? This hurts harbor operations.”
The atmosphere of inappropriate audience behavior was palpable.

Chairman Gerhard Weber continues to allow a

free-for-all atmosphere behavior, allowing audience members to act unruly and disrespectful to commissioners and people in the audience and failing to dismiss individuals who cannot control their disruptive behavior. Weber is not alone in permitting this behavior but is responsible for maintaining order. It is hoped these distractions will cease immediately.
On a brighter note, an audience member lobbied for a giant American flag be erected at the Harbor. The Elks came to the rescue and donated a gigantic 6ftx8ft Old Glory which proudly waves at the 101 and Citizens Dock Rd.
The Harbor meets again, Wednesday, June 11 at 2pm in the conference room at its Citizens Dock Rd.

OBITUARIES
Gregory Paul Johnson
January 28, 1952 - February 4, 2025

Greg was the second child of six born to Paul and Toni Johnson and grew up in Orick, California. He attended Orick Elementary School and McKinleyville High School, and played the position of Guard on McKinleyville High’s 1969 Football Championship Team, which was inducted into the 2005 MHS Hall of Fame.
California, on February 4, 2025, the same day our mother passed six years ago.

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved Trina Faiello, who died on Sunday, December 29, 2024. Trina was a cherished daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend to so many. She leaves behind an enduring legacy of kindness, generosity, and love.
After graduating in 1970, Greg joined the Navy and enlisted for 6 years, which included their 2-year electronics technician school. He sailed the Pacific on the U.S.S. Long Beach, with destinations that included the Philippines, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, and Malaysia. After
being honorably discharged in 1976, Greg settled in Klamath, California, where he would remain for the rest of his life.
Greg loved riding motorcycles, and when he was in the Navy, he bought himself a Moto Guzzi 850. He enjoyed dirt-bike riding with friends Terry Smith, Mike Smith, Paul Leazer, Tim Johnson, and Delbert Rocha, Jr., to name a few. He also went to motocross races and watched his brother Brad win many trophies, usually 1st place.
Greg made his living working in the timber industry until retirement. In 1984, one of his legs was injured in a logging accident, and he was rushed to a hospital in Medford, Oregon.
A little anecdote: after Greg was allowed visitors, Karen went first and said she was his sister; then Kim, Paulette, and Kathy all came to visit, all claiming to be his sister, and the hospital staff became suspicious. During his stay at the hospital, Karen and Mark visited him often, for which he was grateful.
In 1988, Greg and Peggy Sanderson welcomed their son, Sandy Paul Johnson. Peggy’s other child, Marty Barbour, Jr., became a wonderful big brother to Sandy, whom Greg also treated like a son.
Greg was a lifelong Raiders fan and attended many games at the Oakland Coliseum, and when Sandy was older, he
went along. Greg liked going to S.F. Giants games with Ben Webster and Rob Fassio, as well as family members. He also liked the Oakland Athletics and NASCAR. He enjoyed visiting with Tim Duncan in Orick. Greg had a passion for fishing and was very happy when he was steelhead fishing on Redwood Creek with Dad, Sandy, and brother-in-law, Bill; perch fishing with Brian McMillan, Billy Joe Allen, and brother-in-law PeeWee Gilliam; salmon fishing on the Klamath River with Marty, Ben and Super Dave DelPonte; and crabbing with Tom Dore. Whatever Greg caught, he always shared it with Mom and Dad. Greg was truly
loved and will be truly missed. Greg is survived by sisters Karen Clark (Mark) of Medford, OR, and Kathy Mitchell (Bill) of Clayton, CA; brother Brad Johnson (Cheryl) of McKinleyville, CA; stepson Marty Barbour Jr. (Sara) of Klamath, CA; as well as nieces, nephews, aunts, and numerous cousins.
Greg is preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Toni; his son Sandy; and his sisters, Paulette Gilliam and Kim Beck.
Greg’s family would like to thank everyone that attended Greg’s celebration of life that took place at the Willow Line Tap Room in Klamath on May 31st, 2025.
Dale Condon, a long-time Del Norte County resident, was born in San Mateo, California in 1947 and died in May 2025. He was a “water baby” who spent many happy surfer hours on the beach in his youth. Soon after he graduated from U.C. Santa Barbara, Dale and his first wife, the late Jan Smith, set off in a home-made hippie camper, searching for paradise, which they found in Gasquet in 1973. His only child, Joya, was born there and Dale was a very happy and proud father.
From a young age, Trina brightened every room with her laughter and warmth. She had an innate ability to make those around her feel seen, valued, and cared for, no matter how briefly she crossed their paths. Her selfless heart led her to reach out to anyone in need, whether by offering a
As a self-employed carpenter, Dale was for many years the “Gasquet handyman” and joined the Gasquet Volunteer Fire Department. He loved being part of the Gasquet community and felt a connection to it even after moving to Crescent City. He loved being

For those of us that loved and knew Trina, we know of the struggles that had plagued her for most of her life. She faced many of battles bravely and, despite these struggles, her heart never hardened. Trina’s generous spirit, whether

He also served as a CCC AmeriCorps coordinator and taught carpentry at Del Norte High School. Dale dedicated his life to service, teaching others how to make things, to build things, to improve their skills and to be proud of their work. For many years he swam at Fred Endert Pool and considered himself one of the “pool people”. He always loved the Smith River, and the river otter was his totem animal.
