Matt Wakefield got the news Friday, May 15, he and the other co-owners of SeaQuake Brewery have been waiting six weeks to hear — the state gave the green light to restaurants and other businesses in the county to open early. Del Norte County Health Officer Dr. Warren Rehwaldt submitted a local variance and attestation plan to the California Department of Public Health on Thursday and heard right back Friday the request was granted. The state outlined which businesses could reopen from the shutdown due to the COVID-19 emergency. Due to Del Norte County’s isolation and low numbers of confirmed cases, the state allowed the following businesses to open early as long as they had COVID-19 Operations Plans in place to meet mitigation measures: Clothing stores Thrift stores Furniture Stores Auto dealership Childcare Golf courses Public parks, non-congregate

“We’re excited and ready to open,” Wakefield told The Triplicate on Friday. “We’re getting all our tables adequately spaced, disinfected. But we’re going to wait until Tuesday. What we are following, technically we could open now, but we’re getting everything squared aware over the weekend since we’re closed Sunday and Monday anyway.” Before businesses can reopen, they must submit a coronavirus mitigation plan that gets approved by the county health

office. Wakefield said as a member of The California Restaurant Association, the organization provided a template plan that has already been approved by the county. He said staff have been trained on sanitation procedures, have a supply of gloves and masks and know all the additional rules for the limited dine-in services. To accommodate the 50% limit on diners, Wakefield spaced tables six feet apart, eliminated bar seating and the large community dining tables. Their outdoor patio seating also remains open. Wakefield said customers also need to know what to expect as well.

“We’re asking customers to wear masks when they come into the building. Once they’re seated, they would be taking them off to eat and drink,” Wakefield said. “While they’re not necessarily required to wear masks to step in, unless the state gives us further guidance, we’ll adhere to current social distancing rules.” According to the state reopening guidelines, other businesses that can open include laundromats, dry cleaners, auto repair shops, car washes, landscapers, pet grooming, dog walking. Also, residential services that can open early include residential and janitorial cleaning services, appliance repairpersons, handymen, electricians and plumbers. On Monday, Mia Dawn Ansell took the poster with the governor’s mandatory shutdown declaration out the front window of her boutique, Tsunami Beach Company. She said it was great that the county was finally relaxing shutdown order. “We’re small enough downtown with the boutiques we don’t get a huge influx of customers at any given time. So, for us, I think it was a little more difficult having to be closed and seeing Walmart open,” Ansell said. “For us, it’s our only source of income. Lynnette Hayes had been looking for a canine companion since her last pit bull mix Cutter recently died of cancer. But, after the coronavirus shelter-in-place mandate, it became more difficult to find the right fit. “I wanted to find another companion, mostly to help me get through my medical issues,” Hayes said. “I live alone, enjoyed having a dog and want another one. Then COVID-19 came and it became harder to find one. Because, it seemed like more people were getting one because they’re home alone, too.” Hayes was indeed a part of

Block told NBC News that the organization has worked with its 400 shelter partners to spread the word about the need to clear shelters by placing pets with foster and adoptive homes.

“The call has been answered,” Block said. Hayes began her search through her local Humane Society, then expanded it to nearby counties and eventually outside her region. Then, her research of canine adoption databases discovered a possible match through PetFinder.com – 4 ½ hours south of her home in Albany, Ore., or 263 miles as the crow flies in Crescent City. Among Del Norte County Animal Shelter’s population was Stewie, with way too many similarities to her last pet to be a coincidence to Hayes. She made immediate plans to travel south, safely with mask and hand sanitizer, to hopefully adopt her next companion. Justin Riggs, Del Norte County Animal Control Director, said adoptions have been up locally. “We have had an increase in adoptions, although not on the Please see Adoptions, Page A6

The number of confirmed cases of the COVID-19 coronavirus in Del Norte County has more than tripled since Friday. Del Norte Emergency Services Manager Kymmie Scott said the county’s public health department has identified two clusters of infection. Four cases were identified over the weekend and another four on Monday. Scott said they don’t know if there is an association yet between the two clusters. “Most of the folks on there, outside initial presenters, we found through aggressive contact tracing,” Scott said. “There have been no hospitalizations. They are all either asymptomatic or at home recovering.” As of Wednesday afternoon, out of 660 tests administered, there have now been 15 confirmed cases of coronavirus, 611 negative results, 34 pending and four recovered. Public Health Officer Dr. Warren Rehwaldt told the Crescent City Council at its regular meeting Monday the increase in cases has partially to do with Public Health staff urging people to get tested. He also urged residents not to be too alarmed by the significant jump in positive cases. “Some of this is just disease showing up at our border. Some of it is sending people to get tested,” Rehwaldt said. “People should expect to see more of it. School district, teachers union strike deal By David Hayes The Triplicate

The negotiations impasse between the school district and the teachers union experienced a breakthrough May 7 with the two sides reaching a tentative agreement. Marshall Jones, Del Norte Teachers Association president, said the membership will meet twice this week to discuss the 2019-20 contract with a vote probably next Wednesday or Thursday. Jones said the resolution to the negotiations came down to getting past the current uncertainty caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. “I’m glad to have some closure to it. It’s unfortunate, due to COVID, what that has done. At least this is settled,” Jones said. “I would have loved to settle this 15 months ago. But we do need to move on. There are some extreme challenges yet we need to get through.” In the end, Jones said the union representatives accepted the district’s last one-year proposal. The details of the tentative agreement include: A 2 percent increase to the

salary schedule effective July 1, 2019. An increase from $10,700 to $11,700 in the district’s contribution to DNTA members’ health benefits. A 2 percent increase to flat-dollar stipends. A one-time 0.5 percent

OBITUARIES Lois Verna Petty Knutsen January 1, 1925 – March 20, 2020

and passed away March 20, 2020 in Brookings, Oregon, at age 95. She lived 70 years on Knutsen Lane in Smith River, CA, until the last three years of her life. At age 92 she gave up her driver’s license and moved to assisted living at Addie Meedom House in Crescent City, CA. After breaking her hip, she relocated for several weeks to her final residence, Seaview Bright Creek in Brookings, OR. Lois married Karl Knutsen in Collegedale, Tennessee in 1945, following his

return from serving in England during WWII. They moved to Grants Pass, OR, Karl’s hometown, where Karl and his Dad built wooden fishing boats for lake resorts in Oregon. Lois enjoyed living in the Northwest and in 1947, with their infant daughter Jeanne, she and Karl moved to Brookings, OR to begin farming Easter lilies. A second daughter, Judy, was born in 1950. Soon they located land in Smith River, CA and moved there in 1951, building a new home, establishing their lily farm

and continuing Karl’s boat building business. 1955 brought their third little girl, Janice, to the family. Lois began her education to become a teacher before her marriage so with summer schools and evening classes at Southern Oregon College, in 1959 she was hired by School District 17C in Brookings, OR and began teaching library classes at Azalea School. For 25 years every student had a class in her library. She and her good friend Marge Itzen sometimes kept score for the 7th & 8th grade boy’s bas-

ketball teams. She loved those memories of kids and staff and carried them with her, always enjoying seeing faces of her former students around Brookings. As her own daughters were growing up, she and Karl were very active camping and water skiing (she loved driving the boat), often with groups of their friends. Later lots of camping and fishing included their grandchildren. They usually had an RV that kids could count on in cold or wet weather. Several summers Lois and Karl enjoyed living in their RV at Diamond Lake Resort, where Karl spent time repairing some of their rental boats he had made. Lois and Karl both enjoyed traveling and after their retirement spent months at a time traveling the U.S., visiting every state except Hawaii and also cruising to Alaska. They visited friends and many of Lois’ six brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews. They especially loved their friends, Noel and Robbie Billups as traveling companions. Lois trusted the Lord and experienced His love and leading in her life as a Seventh-day Adven-

tist Christian since early childhood. She and Karl believed and lived these values and passed them on to their family. Lois loved the messages, music and her Crescent City church family. After 65 years of marriage, Karl passed away in 2010 and Lois’ life became even more focused on her family. She was able to enjoy visits, photos and videos especially of her great grandchildren. She was much loved by her surviving family: Daughters: Jeanne and husband Jerry McCamman of Crescent City, CA; Judy Woods of Medford, OR; Janice and husband Dwight Winslow of Smith River, CA; Grandchildren: Jeffrey McCamman, Joey and wife Michal McCamman, Kristen Winslow VanRaden and husband Robert; Karly Winslow Baker and husband Brian; Great grandchildren: Ian McCamman, Rhys McCamman, & Tobin McCamman; Levi VanRaden & Annalise VanRaden; Ellie Baker, Emma Baker & Eamon Baker. Plans for a celebration of her life are postponed due to the Covid restrictions.

the Confederated Tribes of Umatilla embraced and accepted their family. Nadine owned and operated Wind Song Gallery where she featured Native Artists in downtown Pendleton. She enjoyed traveling with her husband to New Zealand and throughout the States and home to Klamath to visit with her family. She loved searching through Native Art Magazines for ideas for her doll making and looking at Home and Garden magazines for recipes, garden and house decorating ideas. She also enjoyed sitting on her porch looking at her flowers, listening to birds and watching the deer passing through her yard. Nadine had many close friends who she loved and who loved her including: Jimmy and Ervin Markham, Marie Dick, Virginia and Art Kruger, Nancy Niord, Karen Been, Sherri Moffet, Rosetta and Bruce Comstock, Margie Gunshow, and Margret Sams. Nadine and her family offer a special appreciation to Yellow Hawk Health Clinic doctors and nurses and St. Mary‘s Hospital doctors and nurses for their wonderful and compassionate care. Nadine comes from a long line of Yurok Traditional Medicine and Ceremonial Leaders/ Fire Keepers from the Village of Rekwoi and the House of La’yeq located where the Klamath River meets the Pacific Ocean in the heart of Redwood Trees. Nadine is a Yurok Tribal Member. She was a well-known Native Doll Maker whose dolls can be found throughout the world. She loved traveling to Native Art Markets throughout the Nation and meeting other Native artist and visiting with people she met. She lived with her husband John for 52 years in Pendleton, Oregon on the Confederated Tribes of Umatilla Indian Reservation. She raised her children and developed lifelong friendships here. Nadine and John appreciated and were thankful that

Michael (Mike) Mervin Winn, age 60, passed away Sunday May 10, 2020. He was born on May 17, 1959, in Le Grande, Oregon. He lived most of his life in northern CA and the Oregon Coast. He moved to be closer to his son in Brookings, OR in 2019 and was there for a year prior to his passing. Mike was the son of Melvin and Gerrie Winn and had 4 sisters Wanda, Jan, Debbie, and Julie as

well as a brother, Steve. Mike is survived by his sister; Julie, her husband Darryl, four children; Christopher and his wife Nicole, Jennifer and her husband Damien, Kamille, and Derick and his wife Ashly, nephews; Jarrod and Marcus, nieces; Jessica, Mariah, and Dakota, and six grandchildren; Austin, Cain, Mikey, Kaleb, Lillian, and Kaylee. He is also survived by aunts, uncles, and other loving relatives. Mike graduated when he was 17 and he went on and married his first wife, Cynthia and had two children, then married his second wife Suzanne and had two more children. He was very passionate about culinary arts and worked for many years as a Chef. He was a country man, true to his Native Heritage; who loved living in the redwoods. Some of his greatest moments in life

was playing the guitar with his brother Steve and later passed his skills on to his son and grandsons. Mike loved with the biggest heart and may we always know the strength of his love for us. He was very proud of his kids and always said they were his greatest achievements. A funeral will not be scheduled for Mike, at his request, but we will be holding a Celebration of Life at an upcoming date TBD where friends and family can gather and celebrate the life of our father, brother, uncle, and friend. Art Scene Del Norte County Art in Public Places The Del Norte Association for Cultural Awareness’ Art in Public Places exhibit in the Del Norte Superior Court at 450 H St. in Crescent City is a collection from artist Pauline Holmes entitled “Local Scenes Plus a Llama.” The exhibit has been extended and is available for viewing through June 18. Hunter OBITUARIES education Constance Marie Brown goes online August 24, 1963 - May 10, 2020

In response to the delay of in-person California hunter education classes due to COVID-19, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) is temporarily allowing new hunters to complete their education requirements entirely online. Before COVID-19, California offered a traditional in-person course or a hybrid online/in-person class with a certified Hunter Education Instructor (HEI). Because all classroom instruction opportunities have been suspended, California will temporarily waive the in-person requirement, allowing students to complete the full course of instruction online. Effective immediately, prospective hunters may earn their hunter education certification online. More information is available at https://wildlife.ca.gov/hunter-education. The cost for the course is $24.95. Successful prospective hunters who complete and pass the online course will be able to immediately print a paper Hunter Education Completion Certificate, which will qualify them to purchase a hunting license. School district plans survey The Del Norte Unified School District is seeking input from the community to gather the information that will inform its planning for school options and better serve families in Del Norte County in the 2020-21 school year. Levi Ryan Bowler, 31, of Grants Pass, Ore., was convicted of fleeing an officer/reckless driving, sentenced to jail for 180 days, probation for three years and a fine of $370. Aaron Curtiss Negus, 34, of Dexter, Ore., was convicted of driving under the influence of an intoxicant with a prior conviction, sentenced to jail for 104 days, probation for four years and a fine of $2,602. Kenneth Marshall David Varney, 25, of Crescent City, was convicted of possession of metal knuckles, possession of a controlled substance and driving on a suspended license with a prior conviction, sentenced to jail for 120 days, probation for three years and a fine of $3,808. Varney was also convicted on two counts of violating probation, sentenced to jail for 120 days and a fine of $300.

Russell E. Buckley December 14, 1927 - May 12, 2020

Russell E. Buckley went to meet Jesus, his Savior, peacefully on Tuesday, May 12th, 2020 at the age of 92 in Crescent City. He was a resident of Crescent City for 67 years. Russell was born to Waddie and Edna Buckley in Mississippi. Russell is remembered as being a caring husband and father and witness for God. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Blanche Buckley, two sons, Mark Buckley (Kathy) and Andrew Buckley. Three grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and three sisters. He faithfully attended First Baptist Church of Crescent City for 67 years where he taught Sunday School and held a variety of offices while he served the Lord. Sharing his faith in Jesus was an important part of Russell’s life, especially in his later years. He would take any opportunity to remind people that “eternity is a real long time, so you better be ready for it.” Russell was committed to telling people that “believing in God isn’t enough, you need to ask Jesus to be your Savior.” Russell proudly served his country in the Navy and Army. He first enlisted in the Navy and served from

October 1945 to October 1947. Russell’s first assignment was aboard the Navy Ship, USS Larson, he arrived in Japan soon after the end of WWII. They went to Hiroshima to witness the complete devastation after the Atomic Bombs were dropped. He then went to the Japanese Submarine Base at the port of Sassebo, Japan, where his fleet participated in the destruction of 24 captured Japanese submarines. Russell then enlisted in the Army, serving from October 1950 to October 1953. The Korean Conflict was ongoing so he was first sent to the 11th Combat Engineers in South Korea at the front. When he arrived, to his surprise, he was assigned to the same unit as his brother, Winfred “Red” Buckley, whom he found in the chow line. He and Red worked together running heavy equipment, building roads, bridges, and air strips for the next 6 months. In 1952 Russell was shipped to camp Sakai near Osaka, Japan; he was a Heavy Equipment Sergeant and had 28 Japanese working under him for about

4 months. Russell then requested to be returned to the still ongoing Korean Conflict, just 3 days later he was sent to Pusan, South Korea and was assigned to the 434th Construction Engineers, while there he was promoted to Sgt. 1st Class. Russell was a shareholder at Standard Veneer and Timber Co. for 9 years. In 1963 he purchased Crescent City Shoe Repair and learned the shoe repair trade where he and Blanche worked side by side for 14 years building their business. Over the next 16 years they worked together in several different ventures and businesses. After retirement Russell would spend hours in his shop on wood working projects, building miniature churches and houses for which he received multiple awards at the fair. Pastor Blake Inscore of First Baptist Church will officiate the private graveside service at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Wier’s Mortuary Chapel. Two other people, one from Eureka and a family from Portland, Ore., were interested. But then stay at home happened and they didn’t come down. I never heard from any of them,” Rupert said. “So this really showed she was serious if she was going to drive all the way down from Albany. We were thrilled,” she said. “When I talked to her on the phone

This would allow individuals to get a test on their own to see if they’ve been exposed to the coronavirus. “We’re trying to get the site sooner. We know people want to get testing. We know they’ve had a difficult time getting tests since this started,” Scott said. She added anyone

who does get a test while awaiting results, jot down any contacts with anyone they’ve had in the previous two weeks, whether in public at a store or with family. “That way if tests do come back positive, that information can get back to the tracing team, to facilitate being able to do their work more quickly,” Scott said. Scott said the county is also working with the state to bring in masks for businesses. “We’ve heard on social media chatter that some people are having a hard time getting supplies. We’re working to get masks to employees and the public if they don’t have their own,” she said. As for the type of masks, Scott recommends a safe covering of some sort,

Car clubs unite from Brookings to Crescent City By David Hayes The Triplicate

If you hear the sounds of rolling thunder rumbling through your neighborhood Saturday, don’t panic. It’s just a few stir crazy classic car buffs getting their rides out of quarantine for a cruise of Brookings and Crescent City neighborhoods. With the cancellation of Brooking’s 26th Annual Azalea Festival Car Show due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Leslie Wilkinson had a late-night idea for a replacement. “I know some of members of the Curry County Cruisers who help us decorate for the Azalea Christmas Light Festival. I thought, wouldn’t it be cool to get cars out and cruise the town?” Wilkinson said. So she reached out to her friends in the local car clubs, starting with Jim and Kathy Haggerty of the Curry County Cruisers. Jim, a previous president of the club for five years, said they were immediately all in and put out his own note to his car buddies. “They were all excited. This would have been their big car show on the 23rd. Now that we’re not doing the car show, the Northern Knights, all the car buffs want to get out. I was surprised how it went from zero to 60 in 10 days,” Jim said. “All the guys with classic are cars chomping at the bit to get out.” The “unsanctioned cruise,” as Haggerty called it, will remain social distancing safe with the drivers remaining in their cars at all times throughout the route. He’s encouraging the older members to wear face masks as well. Wilkinson and Haggerty mapped out a route for the cruise, which kicks off at noon at the Church of the Nazarene, located at 1600 Chetco Ave., in Brookings. Wilkinson said the in-

terested cruisers already number more than 50. The participants will push out of the church parking lot at 1 p.m., cruising nearby neighborhoods. Haggerty, who owns six classic cars and will cruise in his 1955 Chevy and his wife Kathy will roll in her 1934 Chevy Phaeton, said he drove the route through Brookings a couple of times, and the run comes to about 12-13 miles. “That’s a lot of miles, not so much of Highway 101. It’s more winding through residential and past some of the senior centers,” Haggerty said. “Seaview always hosts an annual park and greet. They get to see the cars. They really enjoy it. I hope the kids can come out, too.” The cruise will then skirt U.S. Highway 101 and instead head south on Lake Earl Drive. The cruise then takes a similar meandering route through Crescent City ending at Battery Point. Wilkinson said the cruise is free, but she’s asking for donations for the Brookings and Crescent City food banks. Both she and Haggerty emphasized this is not a protest cruise. “This is not a political statement,” Wilkinson said. “So, no banners, just American flags just spreading love.” Haggerty said as an unsanctioned cruise, streets will not be blocked off, lights will not be held for stragglers. He added anyone can participate in their family car. “This is going to be fun. A lot of us put cars in the Azalea show with flags, red white and blue. We encourage that. And if you don’t have a classic car and want to participate, you can fall in at the end of the cruise,” Haggerty said. The DNTA began the school year in August without a ratified agreement. The district and union had been negotiating unsuccessfully since Feb. 28, 2019, over certificated staff salaries and benefits for the 2019-20 contract. The DNTA initially sought a 3.54 percent increase to the salary schedule, while the DNUSD held fast to a 1 percent raise. The DNTA had also sought a 3.54 increase in flat-dollar stipends and a $795 increase per eligible employee in the district’s contribution to teachers’ health benefits. Having reached an impasse, both sides met with a California Public Employees Relation Board appointed arbitrator in December. The arbitrator’s factfinding report was released on Jan. 14 recommending a one-year and three-year solution. a new sense of urgency in the wake of bad economic news from the California Department of Finance last week. The report’s initial estimates put a $4 million loss in revenue for the district’s 2020-21 budget due to the economic shutdown caused by the pandemic. One of the additions to the contract, Jones said, was a provision allowing DNTA members to donate sick leave to their colleagues. “Sick leave is a good thing. We’ve had members in the past come down with an illness and not have enough accrued sick leave,” Jones said. “This allows their colleagues to donate sick time. So members who are out an amount of time can use the donated time without using up their personal income.” Jones said to approve the tentative contract next week, 50% plus 1 of the DNTA members must vote yes. Meanwhile, negotiations continue for DNTA’s entire three-year contract, which ends Aug. 31. “We’ve been in talks with management with what our top issues will look like next fall,” Jones said. “We’ll continue to flush out each of those one by one. But we just don’t know how things will be health-wise with COVID moving forward.”

Yurok Tribe issues reminder about reservation closure The Yurok Reservation will remain closed until at least July 1 to protect Tribal elders, who are essential to the continuation of the Tribeâ€™s traditional culture, and to safeguard the community as the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases increases in two neighboring counties. â€œWith the holiday weekend coming up, we want to remind everyone that the Yurok Reservation is closed to non-residents. We deeply regret any inconvenience this may cause, but it has to be done,â€? said Joseph L. James, the Chairman of the Yurok Tribe. â€œDue to the elevated infection rates in

the two counties, it is extremely important for the reservation community to continue sheltering in place and practicing physical distancing. Wearing personal protective equipment when outside of the home is also strongly recommended. The health of our elders and the perpetuation of our traditional heritage depends on it.â€? Del Norte and Humboldt counties, located to the north and south of reservation, recently received variances from the state to implement Stage 2 of the California Resilience Roadmap. Stage 2 permits certain businesses, such as office-based businesses, car

washes and curb-side retail, to begin reopening following the approval of a modified operation plan. In the past week, both counties have seen spikes in confirmed COVID-19 cases, including the first two COVID-19-related fatalities in Humboldt. Both involved senior citizens. Since March 13, the Yurok Tribeâ€™s Incident Command Team has worked day and night to protect Tribal citizens during this public health emergency. On a weekly basis, the Tribe is delivering food and supply boxes to help approximately 500 vulnerable citizens stay home as much

as possible. The Tribe is conducting regular check-ins with Tribal elders. The Tribe waived all internet fees for April and May to assist those who are struggling as a consequence of the crisis. The Yurok Indian Housing Authority did not charge rent to those in Tribal rental homes during the same period of time. There are curfew and shelterin-place orders in place on the reservation. These orders apply to all reservation residents and businesses. The Yurok Tribal Council is regularly reviewing the orders and will make announcements when each has been lifted.

When the reservation is reopened, it will be a slow and deliberate process. The Yurok Public Health Task Force has developed a phased, COVID-19 Reengagement Plan to guide this effort. The detailed blueprint is meant to mitigate potential risks associated with reopening. The Yurok Reservation is located in an area with very few medical resources and limited coronavirus testing. According to the United Indian Health Services, approximately 60% of the tribal citizens living on the reservation are either elders or individuals who have underlying medical conditions.

WHEREAS, California Governor Newsom issued Executive Order N-33-20 on March 19, 2020 ordering all Californians to immediately heed State public health directives and to stay at home except for essential business and activities; and WHEREAS, on Friday, March 27, 2020, Del Norte County Public Health Officer Dr. Warren Rehwaldt issued an Order mandating that local transient lodging facilities close for stays of less than 30 days with exceptions for local residents self-quarantining, those without alternative means of shelter, patients or families of patients receiving medical care, and persons providing essential services; and WHEREAS, the local economy is a tourist-driven economy and transient lodging facilities have been forced to completely close down or extremely limit their business operations due to the COVID-19 pandemic; and WHEREAS, the local public health response and preparation includes the ability to use transient lodging facilities for purposes of isolation, quarantine and housing of essential workers and unsheltered persons; and WHEREAS, allowing transient lodging operators some additional time to remit their transient occupancy taxes for the first quarter of calendar year 2020 without penalty will provide some short term cash flow relief to business while they apply for financial assistance or modify operations; WHEREAS, the deadline for remitting first quarter TOT is April 30, 2020, urgent action of the City Council is required. NOW, THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of Crescent City, State of California, hereby ordains: SECTION 1. RECITALS. The Del Norte County EFSP Local Board has been awarded $11,535 in Phase 37 and $16,446 in CARES funding for a total of $27,981 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the county. The award was made by a National Board that is chaired by the U. S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency and consists of representatives from American Red Cross; Catholic Charities, USA; National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA; The Jewish Federations of North America, The Salvation Army; and, United Way Worldwide. The Board is charged to distribute funds appropriated by Congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high-need areas around the country. A Local Board made up of representatives from local agencies representing emergency services will determine how the funds awarded to Del Norte County are to be distributed among the emergency food and shelter programs run by local service agencies. The Local Board is responsible for selecting agencies to receive these funds and any additional funds made available under these phases of the program. The public hearing will be on Wednesday, June 17, 2020 at 9:30 a.m. The public hearing will be a video and teleconference meeting only.
