City Addresses Dire Housing Needs • Above Moderate: 101 /189 units 2025-26 are and will continue to be big years for Crescent City in filling the void in lack of housing inventory.

BY ROGER GITLIN Country Media Inc.

No one would disagree Crescent City has a serious housing problem. The shortage of housing, especially affordable housing is profound. The City is doing all it can, and then some, in addressing the challenge to provide adequate housing for all income strata. Through its Housing Element, a State-mandated sixth cycle, a process conducted from 20222030, Crescent City is planning to accommodate at least 189 living units in the following breakdown from the California Dept. of Housing and Community Development: • Very Low: 39 units • Low: 22 • Moderate : 27

Here are the projects: • H Street- Harbor Point Apartments is being built by Danco Communities, consisting of 26 Senior apartments and 1 Manager unit. This is a project the City has been working with Danco for over a decade and finally became feasible after the City was able to obtain a $5M Competitive Local Housing Allocation(CPLHA) grant. After acquiring the funding, Danco was then successful in being awarded housing tax credits which finalized the funding needed to build the development. This project is estimated

to be complete and ready for leasing, late Fall. • California St- Roosevelt Estate consists of 56 apartments built by Elk Valley Builders. The project has three phases. Phase 1 (16 units) and Phase 2 (22 units) were recently completed and are being leased. Phase 3 (18 units) is under construction with an estimated completion date of November.

Iconic Cristina’s Restaurant Closing BY ROGER GITLIN Country Media, Inc.

A blink of the eye, and four decades have past. 1984 marked

the year Mom Aurea and niece Linda took over the old deli on what is now the Mason Mall, downtown Crescent City. Locals wanted Mexican food. Courtesy photo

Aurea started with crackpots and adjusted her delicious recipes to locals’ taste. Word of mouth was quick and very successful. Mom And Dad expanded the kitchen and before one can say “ con much gusto,” Cristina’s Mexican Restaurant began. Soon Tia (Aunt) Juanita began to help in the kitchen. Other family members joined. Adolfo was just five when Cristina’s started. Some rough years and more good years followed…and Cristina’s persevered with very tasty (muy delicioso) dishes. By 2012, Aurea said she tired and wanted to take a break. Then, she was the only one remaining in the kitchen. Adolfo and Christina took over with new energy. Aurea returned to share her recipes. Adolfo and Christina were committed to the a quality menu, warm atmosphere and attractive prices. The formula worked. What will the younger families do? That’s the big question, yet to be answered. Cristina’s will remain open through June 20 and welcomes you to stop by for lunch and early dinner. Christina’s: a wonderful legacy.
