Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Crescent City/Del Norte Chamber of Commerce made “the extremely difficult” decision to cancel its 4th of July celebrations. Melodee Mitchell, Chair of the 4th of July Committee, said, “it was a heartbreaking decision for the committee to make. “We realize the ramifications to canceling the 4th of July celebration. However, we feel a responsibility to keep our community safe and to follow the mandated social distancing guidelines during the COVID-19 Pandemic,” Mitchell said. Then we got hit with the COVID-19 Pandemic,” Vosberg said. Once Gov. Gavin Newsom’s executive order banned large gatherings, it created a cancelation-domino effect, that started
with the chamber’s annual Economic Summit. Vosberg said it takes about four months to pull together the 4th of July celebration and one of the biggest decisions against proceeding was committing to the fireworks show. “We were actually past deadline for the $30,000 deposit for the fireworks show,” Vosberg said, adding the deposit was non-refundable and the committee would have been out that much money had the social
distancing guidelines still not been lifted. “Our research and discussions with city, county and health officials, everything we read, it sounds like to us we will not have any large gatherings in California until the earliest of September or October, or even into 2021,” Vosberg added. She counted all the celebration’s other events that would not fall under social distancing guidelines — the deck party? No, it’s a large party in a small space. The parade? It draws way too many to Crescent City’s streets. “We talked with Dr. Warren Reywaldt (Del Norte County Health Officer). He determined if we were to do a parade, who enforces the 6-foot distance rule? The parade draws hundreds that pack the streets,” Vosberg said. She said the agonizing part is much of the celebration is usually funded by local businesses that come up with more than $40,000 in sponsorship money. “But you need to be open and

Free, out-of-this-world birthday cupcakes By David Hayes The Triplicate
Just four months into her home-baking cottage industry venture, Mary Corcovelos-Mullin had to shut down operations of Sticky Paws Baking Company to prevent exposure to the COVID-19 coronavirus for her and her partner. Her mother, Venita Corcovelos, who handles all the company’s finances while Mary does the baking, also has to handle cancer and chemo treatments every three weeks. “So, we had to close for the safety for our family and customers,” Corcovelos-Mullin said. “Our customers have been very understanding of it.” She added since the closure last month, she’s experienced myriad emotions resulting from the outpouring of kindness and compassion amidst the trauma and chaos. So, rather than completely shut down, Corcovelos-Mullin decided to take the compassion and kindness parts and pay it back. As the mother of three small children, Corcovelos-Mul-

from scratch, chocolate galaxy cupcakes so children don’t miss out on a birthday cake. She’s taking orders each week until noon Thursday and will have the batch ready for pick up on Friday. “I have six orders for Wednes-
day already,” Corcovelos-Mullin said. “I just want to make sure kids feel special. It’s a scary time. They’re not certain of things, not in school. Can’t have friends over for a party. Anything I can do to make them feel special makes me happy.” The cupcakes are German chocolate, with a tri-color buttercream frosting topped with galaxy pixie sprinkles. She left her job with Del Norte County to help care for mother when her cancer returned. Rather than sit around, Corcovelos-Mullen said her mother talked her into pursuing her first passion – baking. “I’ve always loved to bake for family and friends. They encouraged me saying, ‘Hey this would be a great venture to try.’ I do have three small children, and with the uncertainty with the economy up and down, after a conversation with my mom, I thought why not try this, Corcovelos-Mullen said. An effort by Del Norte County Supervisors to get at least part of the county reopened has failed. County Administrative Officer Jay Sarina told supervisors Tuesday, April 28, at their regular meeting that State Parks denied a request to allow residents vehicular access to local units. Sarina explained motorists can drive into Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park via Walker Road, which the supervisors voted to reopen last week, but the parking area will remain cordoned off. District 3 Supervisor Chris Howard originally brought up at a prior meeting State Parks’ decision to install lockable gates at some access points in local state park units without seeking public comment. Not pleased with State Parks’ rejection, Howard directed county staff to send a letter to Gov. Gavin Newsom asking for an exemption for Del Norte County from a soft closure throughout the State Parks system that prohibits people from parking at its units. District outlines online grading By David Hayes The Triplicate
The Del Norte Unified School District resumed grading for most of its students this week. During a presentation to the school board April 23, Tom Kissinger, assistant superintendent of instructional services, said this week was a bridge to distance learning week and outlined what grading will look like the rest of the school year. Kissinger said the key principle was to “do no harm,” thus elementary and middle school students will not be receiving a letter grade. Instead, teachers will be required to make sure students are participating and engaged by keeping track of student contact via Zoom, phone and email. Feedback will be based on completion of work and demonstration of progression in the work or whether work is missing or had not been submitted. After an order is placed, the customer makes a porch pickup while Corcovelos-Mullen obeys social distancing guidelines by donning a mask and rubber gloves during the transaction. She said even though it’s free of charge, a couple of families have insisted on making donations anyway. “The feedback so far has been very appreciative,” Corcovelos-Mullen said. “One boy, his mom said he had autism, this just put a
big, giant smile on his face. That really impacted me to see his happiness and joy on his birthday. That’s something I can teach my own children. Give kindness and get just a smile alone in return is enough for you.” The free birthday cupcakes are the only baking Corcovelos-Mullen is doing right now. She said she hasn’t decided yet whether to reopen. “People can be leery with social distancing. I don’t want anyone to feel on edge,” she said. “Hopefully, if I do reopen, it will be by June 1, if not sooner. My full concern right now is the safety of my family and mom. I will keep people posted on my Facebook page. Stay safe, and I’ll be back in business soon.”
Vosberg explained the firework displays were getting lost in the sky due to the coastal marine air. So, the chamber had been purchasing more ground-based fireworks and less aerial rockets. “So, people staying in their cars and watching from windows wouldn’t be able to see as much, anyway,” she said. Vosberg said the chamber
has already received correspondence from frustrated community members, actually accusing the chamber of not caring. She feels their pain. “I had a Zoom call with my kids. My son is so upset with this. He said more people die in car crashes. We make people wear seatbelts, require airbags, minimize what we can when there is a car crash. I don’t know
what is right/wrong. We as the chamber, have no say in the matter. We just put our faith in elected politicians,” Vosberg said. Vosberg said her research turned up that town after town are also canceling their 4th of July celebrations. And if the social-distancing mandate continues, she worries for the future of other upcoming events including the Relay for Life, county fairs
and the camber’s own Sea Cruise car show in October. Luckily, she said, Sea Cruise can get really close before the chamber has to make a cancellation decision. chamber traditionally brings to the community, such as Sea Cruise. The Crescent City/Del Norte Chamber of Commerce is here and working for you,” he said. Unfortunately, Superintendent Jeff Harris said, this means their goal is to provide high-quality educational opportunities, not high-quality instruction. “This isn’t teaching as normal,” Harris said. He referred to Gov. Gavin Newsom’s March 13 executive order directing districts to “offer distance learning and independent study opportunities to its students to continue to receive state funding.” “If you listen to Governor Newsom, he said, ‘Parents, you need to be prepared to homeschool your children.’ This is
about homeschooling not about instructional models that we’ve all used since 1923.” The DNUSD Board of Trustees unanimously approved a resolution governing grading during emergency school closures. The statewide educational system remains fluid, especially when it comes to high school students meeting standards set by the University of California and California State University systems, Harris said. “Tuesday we were told that the UC, CSUs were only going to be looking at pass/fails,” he said. “Giving a grade could disqualify students from entering college, negatively impact them moving forward
and could also have some unforeseen circumstances with CIF. We’re having discussions with staff about what that means and how we can still utilize grades for purposes for valedictorian and those kinds of pieces.” Fugate added the wrinkle students could face in the revised grading system is moving onto a CSU or UC after graduating. He pointed out the two public college systems had initially indicated grades wouldn’t matter coming into the fall semester. “A high school senior who receives a D in a class instead of a pass/fail designation could be in danger of not being admitted to a UC or CSU in the fall,” Fugate
said. “A letter grade could also have an impact on a student’s ability to participate in athletics based on criteria set by the California Interscholastic Federation, which governs high school sports statewide,” he added. To facilitate online learning Fugate said DNHS staff has distributed about 200 Chrome Books and have distributed more than 105 “paper modules” to families who either don’t have Internet access or feel their student learns better on paper rather than online. He estimated about 20 percent of the highs school students rely on those paper modules. Board member Charlaine Mazzei, who has a special needs son at Redwood Elementary School, expressed her concern about actual instruction, saying it wasn’t clear how that would take place. “I assume the child has been instructed on how to do the work in the packet or how to do the work online, and that’s not necessarily the case when you’re supposed to be moving on to new material,” Mazzei said. “What is the expectation for teachers to record or provide instruction on new material as we move through the school year? And how is that going to
be accessible to us parents who have to sit down with the kid and say, ‘This is how we add up fractions’?” Board President Frank Magarino weighed in, wondering how teachers would support a struggling student with the required work. Harris explained that one of the challenges is that for most students, distance learning is new. “Teachers are providing new content, including videotaped lessons. I saw one instructor tutoring 27 students in math via Zoom. But, students are missing out on music classes, language and art lessons,” Harris said. “Nobody signed up for this. Our staff is doing a great job given the limited tools they have.” Magarino then turned and asked student trustee Elizabeth Ward what attending high school was like for her via distance learning. Ward said she misses the social aspect the most, adding that while she’s adapted well to Zoom and other distance learning modules, it may be different for a student who doesn’t have a similar drive to succeed academically. “The information’s out there from teachers,” Ward said. “They always ask for questions. It depends on the student what they’re going to get out of it.”

Dr. Mark H. Davis
December 30, 1932 - April 23, 2020
1952 - April 25, 2020
after witnessing his uncle, an OBGYN, deliver a baby. Karen and Mark married in 1973 and moved to North Carolina, where Mark studied medicine at Wake Forest University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After earning his doctorate of medicine in 1984, Dr. Davis moved with his young family back to southern California, settling in Orange County and doing his residency at U.C. Irvine in Urology. In 1993, Dr. Davis was finally ready to fulfill his long-time dream of starting his own private practice. The Davis family moved to Del Norte County and in 1995, Dr. Davis opened the doors of North Coast Urology on Parkway Drive. From 1993 to 2015, Dr. Davis served as Del Norte County’s urologist. Along with his dedicated staff and wife Karen, a registered nurse, Dr. Davis oversaw the health of hundreds of local patients. Additionally, he helped form the local non-profit “Preserve Our Pool” and was proud to sponsor various local athletic teams and serve as
Dr. Mark H. Davis, age 68 of Hiouchi, died on Saturday, April 25th in his home after a months-long battle with cancer. He passed peacefully, surrounded by his family and calmed by the quiet presence of the Smith River. Mark was born in Louisville, KY in 1952 and grew up in La Habra, CA. He met his future wife, Karen, while they were both students at La Habra High School. Mark earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and art at San Jose State University, but then decided he wanted to pursue a career in medicine
a founding member of the Freshman Mentor Scholarship Program. At a state level, he was on the board of the California Medical Association, where he spent countless hours over many years helping to draft legislation for the benefit of all Californians. Dr. Davis loved travelling and spending time with his two young granddaughters. He also enjoyed taking windy walks on Pebble Beach, spending time at home in Hiouchi, and strolling among the redwoods with his beloved dog, Colby. Dr. Davis is survived by his wife, Karen; children Sarah, Jennifer, and Colin; brother Bob; and granddaughters Sophia and Charlotte. He was a devoted husband, proud father, and doting grandfather who will be dearly missed. The family plans to hold a private celebration of Mark’s life sometime next year. Robley lobbied hard for native rights at the federal level. He was dedicated to his people and worked relentlessly to make sure the Yurok Tribe became recognized and respected. Robley was a kind hearted man who would give you the shirt off his back if need be. He always helped people in need and never had a negative thing to say about anyone. The family moved to Oakland, CA, where she attended public schools, graduating from McClymonds High School. She received her B.A. from East Los Angeles State University, and later, a Master’s Degree from Humboldt State University. She taught grammar school in Humboldt County. After she retired, she lived in Crescent City and was very active in Troop
Support (a group she started) sending gift packages to the military during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. She recently required surgery and later went to the Crescent City Skilled Nursing where she passed on April 23, 2020. She leaves a half- sister, Mary Martin, in Los Angeles. In Crescent City, she leaves sister California (Calie) Martin, nephews Gino and Ricardo de Solenni, nieces-in-law Athena and Autumn de Solenni, and numerous grand-nieces and nephews. In San Diego, CA, she leaves niece Pia and her husband, Rory Conway. She regularly attended the Senior Center and enjoyed socializing with her friends there on a consistent basis. Not a person to “toot” her own horn, Jan’s approach to life encapsulated a humble approach to helping others in many different capacities. Whether volunteering at the nursing home earlier on in her retirement years, donating time to St. Vincent’s De Paul, participating in the various fraternal

Clara Susan Greene, 85, of Smith River, died April 27, 2020 in Medford, Oregon. She was born February 28, 1935 in Lauderdale, Alabama to Leland and Lillie (Miller) Davis. She graduated from Central High School in Savannah, TN in 1952 and then attended business college. On November 9, 1957 in Nashville, TN, she married Lawrence Franklin Greene. He preceded her in death on March 27, 1992. She moved to Smith River, CA in 1978. She loved her family. She especially en-
joyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was known by her family as Grandma Bingo. She is survived by her daughter, Debra, Greene, Redding, CA; her son Michael Greene, Crescent City, CA; a Sister Donna Mezick, Athens, AL; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Crescent City Chief of Police Richard Griffin wrote on the department’s Facebook page warning of a phone scam. “I have received information just now that people are receiving phone calls asking for donations to be made to the Crescent City Police Department,” Griffin wrote. “This is a SCAM, do not give out any information to them. No one is currently authorized to be asking for donations to the CCPD.”
Griffin advises if anyone receives a phone call like this to write down their phone number and contact the CCPD. Additionally, he emphasized to not give out any personal information or bank account information. “If you have any questions about this or need to verify any attempts of donations in the future, do not hesitate to contact my department at 707-464-2133,” Griffin wrote.

California DMV extends all expiring licenses

The California Department of Motor Vehicles is extending driver’s licenses expiring during the COVID-19 pandemic. Licenses for drivers younger than 70 that expire between March and May are now valid through May 31. All commercial driver’s licenses, endorsements and certificates expiring between March and June 2020 are now valid through June 30, aligning with a recent emergency declaration from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. The extension does not include medical certificates for commercial drivers, which requires additional administrative actions scheduled in the near future. The DMV has alerted California law enforcement of the extensions. Californians with a suspended license are not
eligible. The DMV continues to review and process online renewals and encourages drivers who are eligible to renew their license online to do so. The extensions require no individual action on the part of drivers. These drivers will not receive a new card or an extension in the mail. As an option, these drivers can request a free temporary paper extension online through DMV’s Virtual Field Office to document their extension. The Virtual Field Office, virtual.dmv. ca.gov, builds on the other online services already available to DMV customers at dmv.ca.gov, including driver license renewals. The temporary extensions are in addition to other steps the DMV announced
earlier this month to help Californians with expiring licenses, including: • A 120-day extension for drivers age 70 and older. Drivers age 70 and older with expiring noncommercial licenses are receiving an extension in the mail automatically. • Temporarily waiving required in-person renewals for eligible driver license and identification cardholders with expirations in March, April and May. Individuals who meet the criteria can renew online or by mail. The DMV continues to provide essential services via mail, online, kiosks, its call center, available business partners and now virtually to process critical transactions, including eligible driver license and vehicle registration renewals, during the
COVID-19 pandemic. Customers can use the Services Advisor on the DMV website to learn their options to complete DMV tasks. The measures to help Californians with expiring driver licenses are the latest DMV actions during the coronavirus pandemic, including: • Temporarily closing field offices. Following deep cleaning, expansion of virtual services and development of new protocols, the DMV soon will offer in-person services in each region. Information on office openings will be announced by DMV soon. • Canceling all behind-the-wheel drive tests to honor social distancing guidelines. • Suspending extended office hours and Saturday service.
May 1 recreational ocean fishery Hambro Recycling Center reopening its operations May 1 openings to proceed as planned Because recycling operations have been determined to be an essential operation, the Hambro Recycling Center will resume recycling operations on May 1. The center, located at 445 Elk Valley Rd., will enforce strict social distancing guidelines, require face coverings and have special hours for senior citizens. Hambro requests people postpone their visits if they are feeling symptoms of COVID-19 or have been around a person with the virus.
The center will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Special hours will be available exclusively for senior citizens each day from 8-9 a.m. The company is planning to reduce the concentration of its customers by allocating prep spaces for sorting material for processing. Additional signage will be posted. The designated areas will allow a safe distance between customers and promote the orderly flow of the redemption
process. To assist in the efficient processing pre-sorting of aluminum, plastic and glass material before arrival is advised. Operations will be monitored and observed by staff and management. To continue to operate the facility it will be mandatory that all rules and guidelines be observed and followed. The ordinary workforce will be augmented to assist spacing and rule compliance. Hambro officials ask for cooperation and buy-in from all customers to keep their operation essential.
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) announced Wednesday that the recreational ocean salmon, groundfish and Pacific halibut fisheries scheduled to open May 1 will proceed as planned. However, anglers are reminded to abide by all state and local health guidelines regarding non-essential travel and physical distancing. Staying home to stay healthy is still the best way to keep yourself and others safe. Anglers are also advised to check with local authorities on the status of harbor services and access points as many site closures and access restrictions
exist and may change daily. The opening includes the boat-based groundfish fishery in the Northern and Mendocino management areas (from the Oregon/California state line to Point Arena). The groundfish fishery in other California management areas remains open. The Pacific halibut fishery also will open statewide on May 1. Federal regulations establish recreational fishing seasons for California’s ocean salmon, groundfish and Pacific halibut fisheries, following recommendations made by the Pacific Fishery Management Council. The California Fish and Game Commission adopts
regulations for state waters to match the federal season dates. Del Norte County has its third confirmed positive COVID-19 case — a middle-age Crescent City man. The Del Norte Office of Emergency Services reported Sunday the man is home recovering in self-quarantine. Health officials are investigating how the patient contracted the virus, said Del Norte County Sheriff’s Cmdr. Bill Steven, public
information officer for Del Norte OES. Steven said the patient’s employer is aware of the positive test result. And according to a Del Norte County Public Health Facebook post, the patient’s contacts have also been notified and are self-quarantining at home. According to the Del Norte County Public Health website, as of 9:44 a.m. Monday, a total
of 314 tests have been administered in Del Norte County, 300 tests have returned negative and 11 are still pending. The first two patients confirmed with COVID-19 have recovered. Dr. Warren Rehwaldt, Del Norte Public Health Officer, plans to participate in a telephone town hall meeting hosted by State Sen. Mike McGuire at 6:30
p.m. Wednesday. The telephone town hall will also include Humboldt and Trinity County public health officers and an infectious disease expert from the University of California. Participate in the townhall by calling 844-7217241, and entering code 9362370.

on license plates, dealer stickers and accents and conversations, I can report with some confidence that many of the people visiting Waller Road are not local. Partly because of the easy access from U.S. Highway 199, the Simpson-Reed Trail is exceedingly popular with visitors to the area, especially on weekends and during the school year and summer vacations. Recipients will receive auto Impact Payments Recipients of Veterans Affairs benefits will automatically receive Economic Impact Payments, according to the Internal Revenue Service, working in partnership with the Treasury Department and the Department of Veterans Affairs. Veterans and their beneficiaries who receive Compensation and Pension (C&P) benefit payments from VA will receive a $1,200 Economic Impact Payment with other action needed on their part. Timing on the payments is still being determined. Moving VA recipients into the automatic payment category follows weeks of extensive cooperative work between VA, Treasury, IRS as well as the Bureau of Fiscal Services. “Since many VA recipients typically aren’t required to file tax returns, the IRS had to work with these other government agencies to determine a way to quickly and accurately deliver Economic Impact Payments to this group,” said IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig. “Additional programming work remains, but this step simplifies the process for VA recipients to quickly and easily receive these $1,200 payments automatically. We deeply appreciate the sacrifices and service to our country by each and every veteran and their families, as well as the assistance of VA and the Bureau of Fiscal Services in this effort.” No action needed by most taxpayers Earlier this month, the IRS took a similar action to ensure those receiving Social Security retirement or disability benefits, Supplemental Security Income and Railroad Retirement benefits can receive automatic payments of $1,200. While these groups receive Forms 1099, many in this group don’t typically file tax returns. Many people in these groups are expected to see the automatic $1,200
payments later this month, with SSI payments expected to start in early May. For eligible taxpayers who filed tax returns for 2019 or 2018, they will also receive the payments automatically. About 80 million payments are hitting bank accounts this week. For benefit recipients with dependents, extra step needed to claim $500 for children; Register now for earlier delivery The law provides eligible taxpayers with qualifying children under age 17 to receive an extra $500. For taxpayers who filed tax returns in 2018 or 2019, the child payments will be automatic. However, many benefit recipients typically aren’t required to file tax returns. If they have children who qualify, an extra step is needed to add $500 per child onto their automatic payment of $1,200 if they didn’t file a tax return in 2018 or 2019. For those who receive these benefits – including VA, Social Security retirement or disability benefits (SSDI), Railroad Retirement benefits or SSI – and have a qualifying child, they can quickly register by visiting “Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info” available only on IRS. gov. For those who can use this tool as soon as possible, they may be able to get earlier delivery of the child payments by having these added to their automatic payments. By quickly taking steps to enter information on the IRS website about them and their qualifying children, they can receive the $500 per dependent child payment in addition to their $1,200 individual payment. If beneficiaries in these group do not provide their information to the IRS soon, they will receive their $500 per qualifying child at a later date, depending on when they complete the registration process.

At 4:34 a.m., a resident in the 600 block of G Street reported that there were several people under her house, placed there by Satan who opened a portal to the underworld. At 9:43 a.m., a resident in the 500 block of Calaveras Street reported someone had ransacked his and his girlfriend’s car. At 1:08 p.m., someone reported a car drive right at him at Old Mill and Heights access road, making him jump to the side of the road. At 2:08 p.m., California Highway Patrol called to report a possibly intoxicated driver in the 100 block of 3rd Street. At 4:06 p.m., someone reported spotting a subject walking through the cemetery in the 500 block of Cooper Street causing a disturbance. At 7:13 p.m., a resident in the 800 block of U.S. Highway 101 reported his car was stolen. At 7:17 p.m., a resident reported while out on a walk, finding a bag of bones of unknown origin on the side of the road at Railroad and Blackwell streets. At 7:36 p.m., someone reported spotting several subjects illegally camping in the 400 block of Hoover Street. At 9:31 p.m., an anonymous report of juveniles possibly drinking in the area of Kellogg Beach Road. At 10:31 p.m., a resident in the 200 block of Olive Street reported she believed her house was broken into as several items were missing and several items were left behind that didn’t belong to her. At 12:59 a.m., a report of a car fire in the 700 block of 9th Street. At 10:03 a.m. a report from the 100 block of Price Mall that someone tried to break into the building. At 11:34 a.m., a resident in the 800 block of Small Avenue reported someone vandalized his shed. At 11:43 a.m., a report from the 1300 block of El Dorado Street that a Conex storage trailer lock was cut, but it is unknown if anything was stolen. At 12:39 p.m., California Highway Patrol received a call that a loud crash had taken place around or inside a building in the 1500 block of California Street. At 1:24 p.m., a resident in the 1200 block of Glenn Street reported his shed had been broken into. At 1:33 p.m., a resident in the 900 block of Northcrest Drive reported two subjects had stolen his car.
At 1:42 p.m., a resident in the 100 block of Klamath Boulevard witnessed a known subject breaking out windows to a trailer. At 1:43 p.m., a resident in the 99900 block of 9th Street reported his cat was stolen again. At 2:16 p.m., a subject with a gunshot wound went to the emergency room in the 800 block of Washington Boulevard. At 2:53 p.m., a report of a subject in the 900 block of Washington Boulevard breaking into cars and stealing things. At 3:35 p.m., a resident in the 100 block of Price Mall reported someone broke into a shed and stole some chairs.

At 9:14 a.m., a resident in the 100 block of Klamath Boulevard reported her roommate was assaulted by an unknown subject. At 9:27 a.m., a report of a stolen bike on U.S. Highway 101. At 9:54 a.m., an employee in the 1200 block of Northcrest Boulevard reported someone broke into the yard and went through one of the vans. At 11:25 a.m., a report of a surfboard found with no one around on South Beach. At 12:01 p.m. a report of a cat stolen from a car in the 300 block of Front Street. At 2:58 p.m., someone reported witnessing a subject yelling at and slamming a puppy into the sidewalk in the 400 block of U.S. Highway 101. At 3:16 p.m., a resident in the 1100 block of Seville Avenue reported her chicken had been stolen. At 6:19 p.m., a resident in the 600 block of Cessna Drive reported his grandson was threatening to stab himself and others. At 6:25 p.m., a report of illegal dumping in the area of Point St. George. At 6:31 p.m., a report from the 300 block of Temple Street of a male subject chasing another subject with a club and threatening to beat him to death. At 7:49 p.m., a report of a subject who may have stolen items and ran away from a store in the 400 block of M Street. At 3:22 a.m., a request from Harbor Fire Department to assist on a residential fire on Moore Street in Brookings. At 10:06 a.m., a resident in the 2200 block of Hunter Creek Road reported someone stole suitcases and clothing from her garage. At 10:57 a.m., someone reported finding possible human remains on Holiday Road north of Three Ponds. It was later determined to be deer remains. At 11:58 a.m., a manager in the 400 block of U.S. Highway 101 reported receiving a counterfeit bill and requested it be picked up by law enforcement. At 1 p.m., a resident in the 200 block of 8th
Street reported someone ran over her phone and water bottle. At 3 p.m., a request for removal a male subject from the 100 block of Butte Street who is back on the property and won’t leave. At 2:29 p.m. a resident in the 500 block of Pacific Avenue reported possibly witnessing a group of youths stealing a riding lawn mower. At 7:23 p.m., a report of ongoing theft by a mal subject in the 900 block of Washington Boulevard. At 8:59 p.m., security at a business in the 400 block of M Street had detained a subject trying to conceal several items in his clothing. At 2:14 a.m., a trailer fire was reported in the 100 block of Klamath Boulevard. At 3:22 a.m., a report of a vandalized vehicle in the 1300 block of El Dorado Street. At 4:41 a.m., a resident in the 100 block of Klamath Boulevard reported a subject was sleeping on his porch. At 6:10 a.m., a report of subjects illegal camping who are littering with garbage and beer cans in a park in the 400 block of Howe Drive. At 9:14 a.m., a request to remove a subject camping in a vehicle in a parking lot in the 800 block of H Street. At 11:28 a.m., a resident reported his cat was stolen from his car in a parking lot in the 900 block of Northcrest Drive. At 12:18 p.m., a shoplifter was detained by staff in the 900 block of Washington Boulevard. At 3:41 p.m., security requested the removal of a subject loitering and refusing to leave from the front of restaurant in the 300 block of M Street. At 3:57 p.m., a resident in the 600 block of Humboldt Street reported having ongoing issues with her son, who was living with her at the residence, and had swung an ax at her earlier in the day. At 5:18 p.m. a report of a dog trapped inside a hot car with the windows rolled up in the 900 block of Northcrest Drive. At 6:47 p.m., someone broke into a vehicle and stole a purse in the 600 block of Keller. At 11:05 p.m., a report received of possibly five shots fired in the area of Blueberry and Blackwell Lane.

At 2:49 a.m., someone broke out the glass at the entrance of a residence in the 600 block of M Street. At 6:49 a.m., staff in the 1000 block of U.S. Highway 101 reported a subject appeared to be trying to break into their shed. At 8:36 a.m., a report of a subject at a motel in the 100 block of L Street was causing a disturbance, yelling and throwing things at staff. At 9:36 a.m., staff in the 600 block of L Street requested the removal of a subject who was back on the property. At 12:46 p.m., staff in the 400 block of U.S. Highway 101 requested removal of a guest who was causing ongoing issues and wouldn’t leave.
At 1:39 p.m., an officer was flagged in the 400 block of U.S. Highway 101 by someone to report a stolen car. At 2:43 p.m., a resident in the 100 block of Klamath Beach Road reported a subject was on her property stealing gas and making strange statements he was with the government. At 3:44 p.m., staff in the 100 block of Walton Street requested the removal of a subject camping in a car on the property’s parking lot for three days. At 4:58 p.m., a resident in the 100 block of Harbor View Drive reported a neighbor brandished a Taser at him in an ongoing dispute. At 9:51 p.m., staff in the 900 block of Washington Boulevard reported a male and female were having an altercation in the parking lot and the male may have a pistol.

At 2:28 a.m., a report of female subjects sitting in a parking lot in the 400 block of U.S. Highway 101 who are refusing to leave and were looking through other vehicles in the lot earlier. At 7:04 p.m., a report of a male subject that left with stolen t-shirts from the 900 block of Washington Boulevard. At 9:58 a.m., a report of a vehicle in a parking lot in the 1300 block of El Dorado Street that has been there over a month and now has broken windows. At 10:10 a.m., staff of a business in the 700 block of Washington Boulevard requested the removal of a subject refusing to leave the store. At 1:23 p.m., an officer flagged in the 900 block of Washington Boulevard by someone reporting a tree was leaning against powerlines. At 4:14 p.m., someone reported his shop alarm was going off when he arrived in the 500 block of Elk Valley Road and requested assistance in checking the property perimeter. At 6:31 p.m., a resident in the 100 block of Turnbull Lane reported a subject was at her front door with some sort of tool trying to get in. At 8:45 p.m. a report of a vehicle vs. light pole in the 400 block of M Street. At 10:18 p.m., a report of an alarm and lights going off in the 600 block of M Street.

At 2:43 a.m., a resident at Oregon and Hoover streets reported a female subject stole her wallet and phone. At 12:50 p.m., a report of a male subject swinging a metal bar at cars at U.S. Highway 101 and Northcrest. At 2:51 p.m., a report of a subject being held for theft in the AP office in the 900 block of Washington Boulevard. At 4:54 p.m., a report of someone laying on the floor of a restroom with a firearm in the 900 block of Washington Boulevard. At 7:45 p.m., someone in the 500 block of Elk Valley Road reported the theft of some heavy-duty shelving. At 11:27 p.m., a resident in the 800 block of G Street reported someone broke into her neighbor’s house.
Local leaders send letters to DOT in support of retaining Contour’s air service at county airport David Hayes The Triplicate
Although Boutique Air is seeking to provide Essential Air Service to the Del Norte County Regional Airport, local leaders are hoping the U.S. Department of Transportation chooses to re-up its contract with Contour Air come September. Both the Del Norte County Board of Supervisors and the Crescent City Council sent the DOT letters in support of Contour, as recommended by the Border Coast Regional Airport Authority. Mayor Pro Tem Heidi Kime, a member of the BCRAA’s Board of Commissioners, said at this week’s City Council meeting the letter in support of Contour was for a multitude of reasons. “They’ve done a great job of reliable service at an affordable price with its service from Crescent City to Oakland,” Kime said. “The DOT are the ones who opened this up to different offers. So, we want to send a clear message we want Contour to continue.” Kime said among the reasons the BCRAA prefers Contour over Boutique are its planes are ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) accessible, a majority in recent community survey wanted to continue flights to Oakland versus Boutique offering flights north to Portland, Ore., and Contour uses jets with 30 seats available, while Boutique has propeller planes that seat only 8 or 9. Appearing before the Board of Supervisors on
April 14, Airport Director Randy Hooper reiterated the BCRAA’s issues with Boutique’s proposal and that its request to the DOT to reject Boutique’s bid had more to do with continuing its relationship with Contour. Hooper said the BCRAA also submitted similar requests for letters from the Curry County Board of Commissioners, Crescent City Council, Elk Valley Rancheria, Tolowa Deeni’ Nation and the City of Brookings, which make up the joint powers authority. District 2 Supervisor Lori
Cowan, the county’s representative on the BCRAA Board of Commissioners, wanted it said publicly what was left out of the letter to the DOT — handicap accessibility played a part in why Boutique was turned down before Contour and again now. Contour Airlines has provided non-stop service between Crescent City and Oakland since April 2018 through the Alternate EAS Program when its predecessor PenAir ceased its twice-daily flights between Crescent City and Portland in
December 2017. Mayor Blake Inscore added he found some attractiveness in flying in a charter flight with a small group of people when he initially looked at Boutique’s proposal. “But you look at what Contour has been able to provide, like the Japanese delegations, no way would Boutique been able to handle that. The delegation would have had groups of people charter busses from Portland or San Francisco to get the rest of the way to Crescent City,” he said. “Boutique just
