Fire destroys abandoned residence in Crescent City By DANIEL J. SCHMIDT Editor
The Crescent City Fire Department responded to a fully-engulfed residence on the 300 block of McNamara Avenue, near Butte Street on Tuesday morning. The small house had been abandoned for several years. It was littered with an accumulation of trash and debris left by transients who frequently occupied the structure. The residence was a complete loss, but no injuries were reported. Next door neighbor Brandi Maynard said that when she moved here, “the first thing I did was put up a fence. I’m glad they got the fire contained.” Property records indicate that the vacant building has a current assessed value of $15,946, plus $9,370, for the 7,056 square-foot lot upon which it sits, for a total assessed value of $25,325. According to property records, the property taxpayer has an address in Grants Pass, Oregon. Fire department officials reported that they have responded to previous fires at the same address.

Grant could lead to renovated Front Street By DANIEL J. SCHMIDT Editor
The city of Crescent City seeks to partner with the Elk Valley Rancheria on a joint application to seek $11.5 million to make further improvements along Front Street between I Street and U.S. Highway 101 and the Battery Point Lighthouse area. The city’s proposal would reduce Front Street from “an underutilized four-lane roadway to an attractive, two-lane roadway with pedestrian and
bicycle improvements, cultural interpretive signage, off-street parking, local art, safe connections to recreation and native landscaping,” according to a staff report prepared by City Manager Eric Wier and City Grants and Economic Development Coordinator Bridget Lacey. The proposed project will supplement earlier improvements that were completed last year that transformed Front Street between B Street and G Street, adjacent to the Beachfront Park. Tobacco retail licensing is needed By Amber Weir Guest Viewpoint
Do we need local controls for tobacco? This is the question our Board of Supervisors and City Council members explored, without taking action, at their joint meeting on March 29. I was asked to comment on this issue as the Project Director for California Health Collaborative’s NorCal 4 Heath project, which is a fiveyear project that is funded by the California Tobacco Control Program. Our project provides community education regarding tobacco use, the harms, and tools a community can use to address these. There are currently six other funded tobacco education prevention projects working in Del Norte County. This alone should warn us that tobacco and nicotine addiction is no ordinary problem. According to the California Department of Public Health In the last 12 years, Del Norte County has had one of the highest adult smoking rates in the state of California. our doctors’ offices, and law enforcement for more than 20 years. In the last seven years vaping has entered our local scene, and our education and prevention efforts so far haven’t been enough. The California Healthy Kids Survey reports that Del Norte County’s youth vaping rates have continued to rise each year. As of the 202021 school year: · 1 out of 10 seventh graders (11 and 12-year-olds) have vaped; · 1 in 5 eleventh graders have vaped; · 1 in 2 nontraditional students have vaped in the last 30 days. In a presentation given by Dr. DeNoble, a leading addiction scientist, he stated that in 1979 his lab found that it only takes 41 milligrams of nicotine to rewire the brain and cause addiction. Interestingly enough just one Juul (a popular vaping device among youth) contains 41 milligrams of nicotine. intended to also to improve the public streets surrounding the Ocean Front Lodge at 101 A Street, and the California Coastal Trail bicycle and hiking path at Battery Point Lighthouse Park. The funding, available under the Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity grant program, was created to provide $2.275 billion of federal infrastructure funding to improve surface transportation infrastructure projects that will have a significant local or regional impact. The city expects the Front Street Complete Street and Cultural Inclusion Project, or “Front Street Project” for short, to have a “significant impact on the economy and livelihood of Crescent City residents, as well as for tourists and residents of the Northern California Coast.” The project will include the following specific improvements:
• Narrowing Front Street (between I Street and US 101) from four lanes to an attractive, landscaped, two-lane street that will invite walking and biking through the installation of new sidewalks and bicycle lane striping. Roughly 20,500 square feet of new sidewalk with 2,500 linear feet of curb and gutter will be constructed. • Paving critical storm water, water main, and sewer infrastructure improvements on A Street, Second Street, and B Street that connect directly to Front Street. On Front Street that will include the installation of a 48-inch high density poly-ethylene storm drain pipe from I Street to U.S. Highway 101, replacement of a failing CMP storm drain as needed and tying into existing drainage at K Street from Front to Second Street. • Making improvements according to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) that include 27 access ramps throughout the Front Street project. • Constructing sidewalk (16,500 square feet) as

well as curb and gutter (1,650 linear feet) infrastructure along A Street, Second Street, and B Street. • Posting of cultural, historical, and interpretive signage, as well as sidewalk (12500 square feet), curb, and gutter (totaling 750 linear feet) construction along Lighthouse Way—thereby connecting to Battery Point Lighthouse trail, the Taa-‘atdvn Village Site, and the California Coastal Trail. • Developing intermodal/multimodal infra-
structure that includes bike lanes and walking paths leading to the public transit hub at the east end of the project area. In addition, the development of a separated waiting area and information kiosk for transit passengers. • Establishing a tsunami evacuation route road marking and public address warning system. The city must submit an application defining the project scope, budget, timeline, and objectives by April 14, 2022. Award announcements will be made
August 12, 2022. Fully executed grant agreements and environmental approvals must be completed by September 30, 2026, with project expenditure completed by September 30, 2031. There is only one tiny catch according to the staff report. The RAISE grant is awarded on a reimbursable basis, so the city will need to pay the project costs upfront, and then request reimbursement from the funding agency. The report further states that “the city is already involved in several other large projects, and the cash flow for all projects needs to be considered as a whole. The timing of each project and when it is reimbursed will impact the city’s ability to cash flow the projects.” Possible cash flow remedies include inter-fund borrowing, external borrowing, adjusting project timing, or other options. The RAISE grant includes a retention requirement. The Department of Transportation will withhold five percent of the reimbursements for a period of
three years, which means the city will be waiting for $575,000 to be reimbursed for three years after the project closeout. So far, the city has received, or has now applied for, grants totaling nearly $19 million. This investment already has and will continue to improve Front Street as the gateway to Crescent City. Part of the grant proposal includes construction of a gateway arch over the entire width of Front Street that will greet visitors as they enter the park area or proceed further to the Battery Point Lighthouse. While there is no guarantee that the city will be awarded a grant, the “extremely competitive” grant process might favor Crescent City because of the successful completion of earlier grant projects along Front Street. According to Wier, a recent Crescent City grant application was “one of few applicants in California that was highly recommended.” This may be a “tie-breaker” when it comes down to a final decision.

How to make aging pets more comfortable Pets are valued members of many families, and their owners typically do everything they can to ensure their furry friends live as comfortably as possible. Care becomes even more important as pets get older. Just like people, aging pets may eat less and sleep more. They may have reduced stamina and even experience stiffness when getting up from sleep. Certain pets may experience failing eyesight, hearing loss and/ or incontinence. According to an American Pet Products Association survey, 67 percent of U.S. households have a pet and will have to cope with that pet becoming a senior at some point. Senior animals might need a little extra help as they

age, particularly with regard to comfort. These tips can help. • Visit the vet more often. Senior pets may need to see the vet more frequently than they used to. Pets typically visit the vet every year. Senior pets may require two visits per year. Speak with a veterinarian about how often your aging pet should come in for checkups. Checkups can help identify illnesses earlier and ensure any aches and pains are addressed immediately. • Invest in comfort devices. Pets may need items that can accommodate aches and pains or other conditions. For example, aging pets may benefit from a high quality orthopedic pet bed. Pet strollers and raised food bowls also can make aging pets’ lives a little more comfortable.
• Ensure ample protection against the elements. Aging pets may feel the weather more than younger pets. They may need sweaters and coats or booties to protect their paws from the snow and ice. Cooling or heating mats may improve comfort indoors. • Purchase animal diapers. Some senior pets may not be able to control themselves. Diapers and absorbent pads can keep them dry and prevent soiling around the house.
• Address mobility issues. Aging pets may need help getting around. Non-skid carpet runners in high-traffic areas can help pets walk around securely. Steps or ramps can make it easier to get on or off beds or in and out of vehicles.
• Help the animal lose weight. Pets should maintain a healthy body weight, which can relieve pressure on joints and reduce risk for certain illnesses, including difficulty breathing and skin irritations. Speak with a veterinarian about the right foods and types of exercise for your pet to keep its weight in check.
• Install doggie doors. Senior pets may need to relieve themselves more frequently. A doggy door can allow for faster

which allow for higher concentrations to be inhaled and absorbed more quickly than regular nicotine. This interferes with a growing brain. Nicotine changes the way connections form in the brain, and exposure to this while the brain is growing – up until around the age of 24 years old -- makes youth more susceptible to addiction. Tobacco companies know that 90 percent of smokers today started before they were 18. It is well documented that Big Tobacco has used this knowledge for over 60 years. In a 1969 draft report, “Why One Smokes,” Phillip Morris company is quoted: “Smoking a cigarette for the beginner is a symbolic act…. ‘I am no longer my mother’s child, I’m tough, I am an adventurer, I’m not square.’…As the force from psychological symbolism subsides, the pharmacological effect takes over to sustain the habit.” With Big tobacco spending, $8.4 billion a year in marketing, and 97.4 percent of that is spent at the point of sale, it’s no

wonder these products seem “not that bad.” Big Tobacco has many years of experience and know-how when it comes to marketing, creating environments, and social norms. This is even more apparent in rural communities, such as ours, where there are no local protections to combat Big Tobacco’s marketing dollars. It seems hard to truly believe they are actually spending that much or have that much influence in our small town, right? But they do. There are 11 places within two miles of the Crescent City limits where someone can purchase tobacco. There are 26 locations, if you include the entire county. In each of these locations, Big Tobacco places signs and posters inside and outside of these stores, on the gas station fences, gas pumps, windows, and walls. Big Tobacco pays for counter mats, change cups, shelving displays, coupons, price discounts, and promotional payments to retailers to have their products placed in specific store locations, like the wall behind the cash register. With so many places for people to see their products, it is no wonder why

The community was left with the consensus being to do nothing and with comments like, “kids will be kids,” and warnings that this is a “slippery slope to government overreach.” The conversations quickly lead to political party values and fictitious ideas of “where will government overreach end?” While it is important to not lose sight of the big picture, the problem with this particular discussion is that we lost sight of the actual problem happening with our youth. One piece of information missing from the current conversation is the serious lifelong addiction nicotine has on our youth, and the chronic lifelong health effects and tolls it has on our community. There was no discussion on how tobacco-related deaths are nearly five times higher a year than drug overdose-related deaths, or that tobacco-related deaths are five times higher than alcohol-related deaths, or 13 times higher a year than car accident deaths. This is not an ordinary problem; tobacco is the number one preventative

In Del Norte County there is greater density of tobacco stores with 93 stores selling tobacco per 100,000 residents ,versus 79.6 stores per 100,000 residents across California. Rural county stores were found to be significantly more likely to advertise at least one discount for chewing tobacco and vaping products, which appeals to price-sensitive consumers, including youth. Big tobacco has strong roots in rural communities. It is, unfortunately, up to our under-resourced communities to address the unfair targeting by Big Tobacco. A tobacco retail license is a public health recommended best practice for communities addressing tobacco use prevention. Policies reducing
tobacco retailer density are effective in reducing or eliminating inequities in the location and distribution of tobacco retailers. Restricting access to flavored tobacco has also been shown to reduce youth use. In an evaluation of New York City’s law, which prohibited the sale of all flavored tobacco, excluding menthol, it was found that as a result of the law, youth had 37% lower odds of ever trying flavored tobacco products and 28% lower odds of ever using any type of tobacco. So I ask the community, if the six tobacco use prevention programs haven’t been able to curb our youth’s increase in vaping rates, then should we add another tool to our toolbox? That is the question our elected officials were trying to answer on March 29, but unfortunately, they did not take any action.

I hope that our elected officials will decide to have another meeting and to problem-solve the best options for our community to protect our youth from this addictive product. If we recognize that our little community has six local programs trying to educate and prevent youth use, and all the while we are having more and more youth vaping, then we must do something more. Dolor Almeida, age 88, a 22-year resident of Brookings, passed away at home on Friday, March 25th following a long illness. He was a native of Rosais, Sao Jorge, Azores, Portugal. He came to Brookings in 1999. Dolor was a dairy farmer in Gustin, California, and later in Buhl and Gooding, Idaho. He supported I.D.E.S. organizations throughout the San Joaquin Valley and Bay areas of California. He also made
donations to the Portuguese National Church of the Five Wounds in San Jose, CA, the University of California at Davis and the Caine Veterinary Teaching Center. Survivors include his wife, Alvina Almeida; son Manuel Almeida; daughter Linda M. Almeida and one granddaughter Abbey Almeida. He was preceded in death by his brothers Jose S. Almeida, Miguel S. Almeida, Jaime S. Almeida, Manuel S. Almeida and sisters-in-law Macia Almeida and Nelia Almeida. A Rosary was recited on Thursday, April 7, 2022, at Redwood Memorial Chapel, 1020 Fifield Street, Brookings, Oregon. on Del Norte Not now, not ever! Eye Is Masten the right choice for District 5? There are governmental, economic and social changes that are about to descend upon Del Norte County that will alter our community, its people and our way of life. What will soon emerge statewide is not unlike what President Eisenhower warned us about when he left office in 1961: A new social/industrial complex. Fourteen billion dollars will soon be spent by California government agencies on major contracts to build housing for and provide services to the rapidly expanding segment of the homeless population eager to receive those handouts. As Del Norte County strives to overcome pre- and post pandemic hardship, it has looked to tourism as a source of economic recovery. What may arrive in their place are the more troubled and desperate homeless sectors of society eager for services that places like San Francisco are now less willing to provide. Those dissatisfied with the level of support from Oregon are just a short distance away from this new California generosity. In the meantime, our local working families – the fathers and mothers who labor sometimes multiple jobs to provide a decent home and lifestyle for their children, along with those willing to work for minimum wage because they want to enter the workforce, will be pushed down a notch or two as the social service sector of our government is “reimagined” as a vast organization to serve the homeless. Sadly, many of the working class will soon realize that it makes more economic sense to jump on the giveaway bandwagon than it does to continue to earn an honest day’s wage for an honest day’s work. On the docket is a plan to build thousands of homeless housing units along the Northern California coast, and to ramp up the various county departments and agencies to divert this rapidly expanding population of homeless, mentally ill, unemployable, and those unwilling to work that is arriving from the bigger cities with more political clout. Del Norte County, as the only Red county along the California coast, doesn’t have the political influence to stop it. Just like in the smaller, more remote communities in Southern California’s High Desert following the Los Angeles Riot, politicians and planners will find Del Norte and other Northern Coastal counties as the places to push unwanted segments of the population. Our own State Senator
Mike McGuire (D-Santa Rosa) is a major proponent of this movement. As the new Senate Majority Leader, he carries considerable weight among the Democratic veto-proof Senate and Assembly and executive branch. Sen. McGuire hosted a Zoom meeting April 5 to introduce the proposal. Among the highlights are: * Plans to build 150 new homeless projects along the North Coast, beyond the $223 million already spent; * A new civil “Care Court” will be established to compel services on behalf of those who seek psychiatric assistance and homeless entitlements; * 39 grant applications are being processed, with approvals already given in Marin County, and the Cities of Eureka and San Rafael; * 50,000 new units statewide to be built over the next two years for California’s 161,000 homeless individuals; and * 10,000 new prevailing wage jobs in Caltrans to be offered to homeless and those formerly incarcerated in state prison to clean up state highways and freeways. Of course the plan to hire homeless people to pick up trash along the highways sounds like a good idea. Much of the trash hidden in the clusters of trees and bushes along the highway edge are the remains of abandoned homeless camps. Those who made the mess should clean it up. But, what we will get instead are persons who know how to game the system. What started decades ago as the false claim, “will work for food,” will soon evolve into a sense of entitlement to a government job with government wages, benefits and a pension. It won’t be long before workers compensation claims for the inevitable “injuries” sustained from picking up trash become another boondoggle. We should learn from our own local experience with the former Coastal Inn and Suites that the county’s $2.4 million purchase – with no City of Crescent City input – has resulted in increased criminal activities and more law enforcement responses. We all know that there are plenty of people among us who need our help. Many of us have experienced the family crisis following the loss of a job, the inability to pay rent, a break-up in the relationship between parents, a catastrophic or chronic illness or medical condition, or just a plain sense of hopelessness and despair. This is not the first time that the City of Crescent City in Del Norte County, California, has sought criminal charges against relatively innocent people. Alex Campbell, Interim Mayor, was convicted of a similar wrongdoing in 2020. Neither of these individuals were attempting to vote twice. Both are highly professional, civic minded people who have been brutally taken down by some ominous political force that seems to serve no purpose at all. Not wishing to drag family and friends through the muck and mire of such smarmy doings, many simply acquiesce and that is simply a shame.
Due to our membership declining due to age, relocation and other reasons, the Del Norte Short Lines Model Railroad Club has had to make the unfortunate decision to close our layout at the Del Norte County Fairgrounds. We greatly appreciate all of the support we received, and want to thank all of the businesses and individuals who donated to us over the years. Fifth District Newsom-appointed Del Norte County Supervisor Susan Masten takes her oath today. At the very minimum, Supervisor-Appointee Masten will serve in office until January 3, 2023. With just 900 Democrats out of almost 3,000 registered voters in District 5, is the Gavin Newsom-appointed Masten a good fit for that district? I would think not… The June 7 Primary Election will whittle the five candidate roster down to the top two vote getters, realistically assuming no candidate will amass 50 percent plus one vote in June. The November General Election will determine who serves out the remaining two years of the late Bob Berkowitz’ term. Yurok Tribal member Masten will be the first Native-American to serve on the Del Norte County Board of Supervisors. In 1996, Masten ran unsuccessfully for the Board. In this follow-up interview, I asked Masten if the appointment by Newsom, with a mediocre forty percent approval rating in Del Norte County, would hurt her chances to be more than a short term Supervisor. She stated, “I’m honored and humbled by the Governor’s support. I’m my own person, and hope the voters of the Fifth District I meet through precinct town halls and door-todoor knocking that I will earn their support.” Newsom and Masten are both Democrats. How will Masten represent the
citizens of District 5? Unknown. Masten: “Klamath is the stepchild of Del Norte County.” Does that comment place residents of Bertch Tract, Harbor District and Parkway Corridor as full blooded pedigree Del Norters with parent / supervisors at the Flynn Center? Is Klamath perceived to be less important by some Yuroks? My experience on the Board of Supervisors tells me otherwise. Klamath and the Yurok Tribe was never slighted, quite the opposite. Supervisor Berkowitz and I sat on the Yurok / Klamath Board of Supervisors Committee. We involved ourselves with Chamber of Commerce and Yurok Tribal priorities, including additional funding for the Klamath Chamber and on-hands assistance with Yurok Tribal recreation needs. Masten has served on the Yurok Tribal Council as Vice Chair. She retorts, “I want to hear from all the people across District 5. I want to hear from people across the county as I will be voting on issues affecting all Del Norte County.” According to a North Coast Journal article August 6, 2015, then-Yurok Vice Chair Masten brought an investment firm associated with an individual named Charles “Duke” Shehan to the attention of the Tribal Council. The Tribe was seeking short term financing of approximately $8 million to open up the Redwood Inn and Casino. Shehan was the sole proprietor of Humanitarian International Services Foundation. Sadly, the Tribe voted to send Shehan a $250,000 “financing
costs” fee on the understanding that the non-profit HISF would be sending the first Roger installment Gitlin of $1 million, forthwith. The “Duke” was a dud and a criminal swindler to boot and absconded with a quarter-million of Yurok cash. Regretfully, Shehan was never charged with the Yurok swindle and served 36 months in Federal custody for a previous swindle. The Yurok case remains uncharged to date. Masten deflected much of the responsibility to the Tribal Council’s legal department failure to do its “due diligence,” and the decision to move forward as a Tribal Council decision. Masten nonetheless acknowledges “mistakes were made.” Masten further acknowledges she undertook fraud prevention classes so, in her words, “this would never happen again.” “I always take responsibility,” says Masten. I’m not sure I understand what taking responsibility means, in this matter. Let’s return to civility please I am always baffled when local elected officials and others talk smack about our state and federal representatives. How can this possibly be a successful strategy to solicit help for our community? Our Governor, Congressman, State Senator, and Assemblyman are all Democrats, who got elected fair and square by the majority of voters in our district. It is a disadvantage to our community to be disrespecting the very people who have been elected to help us. Why can’t people disagree without being disagreeable or resorting to personal attacks? Politicians are human and are subject to the same emotional responses as the rest of us. Fortunately, responsible professionals will do their best to represent our interests despite the insults that are hurled by a few local politicians and gadflies. At a Board of Supervisors meeting last year, regarding the possible realignment of our Congressional district boundaries, some Supervisors stated how they did not like Congressman Huffman and voted to support a new district that stretches to the east from here. The redistricting did not happen as
they wished, and Huffman is still our congressman. He did notice this action and will likely remember this. However, Congressman Huffman is a true leader, who I believe will continue to represent us to the best of his ability. It was Congressman Huffman who helped start the stakeholder group that is working to improve Last Chance Grade. We should all remember that fixing this road will require a massive amount of federal funding. It would be wise to maintain a good relationship with our congressman. On March 8 several Supervisors spoke very dismissively of Governor Newsom. They suggested that the Governor doesn’t care about us and will take too long to appoint an interim Supervisor. They were wrong. It took about three weeks for the Governor to appoint a replacement Supervisor. Governor Newsom very clearly understands that leaving this 5th District Supervisor position vacant while a lengthy election is underway would be a disservice to the constituents who live in the 5th District. After almost a year of inconsis-
tent representation, leaving this position vacant for another nine months until Kevin the election Hendrick is decided, would have deprived one fifth of our county from having the representation to which they are entitled. You may disagree with the Governor’s political affiliation or his policies, but it is not fair to smear the local person he chose. From what I can see, Supervisor Masten understands the value of civil relationships and is well prepared to step into this job to do some good for our county. In June and November, the voters in the 5th District will have the opportunity to vote for Supervisor and Susan Masten is one of the five people running. In the meantime, it would be best if we would give Supervisor Masten the respect that she deserves and work with her to address the many issues that our community faces.
Let’s Talk Real Estate Pre-qualification is essential in today’s market
Let’s talk about the importance of getting prequalified in today’s competitive market. If you remember last week, I told you the importance of working with a local Realtor© and how your agent can help you navigate through the home buying process. Having a prequalification letter in place before you start looking at homes is important first step on the path the home ownership. The reality of the real estate market today is there are far too few homes on the market for the number of buyers in place and ready to buy those homes. As of today’s writing, there are 43 homes for sale in Del Norte CounRobert Tupy ty. Those homes include all mobile Crescent City homes in a park, all manufactured homes on land, and all homes with Linda Stevens a view. They range in price from Crescent City $45,000 to $2,950,000. Add to the low inventory the number of people looking to buy a home. Currently there are 103 real estate agents active in our community trying to help their clients buy a home. Think about that for a minute, there are 103 active Realtors© and 43 active properties. Assuming that each agent has only one client they are working with, there are at least two buyers for each property. Let’s dive down a little bit deeper to the reality of the situation. If you are looking for a single-family stick-built home, there are 34 as of today’s writing, and if you need financing to purchase that home your inventory to choose from is only 28 homes. If you start to narrow your search to fit your budget, you could easily be down to one or two homes to choose from. It also contains language to pay three (3) fire chiefs and one (1) captain all with six (6) figure incomes. * Many people did not receive their ballots including, unbelievably, Crescent City Harbor. The Harbor now has a lawsuit against the Fire District. * This was not passed by popular vote, but rather won by 1/4 of a vote equating to $17.80 after giving multi- family property owners weighted ballots! Instead of paying $74 per year per property, multi property owners get a reduced rate per property equaling $1,000 flat fee. In one instance that means a discount of over $8,130! * The Fire Protection District boats of going out on more calls, but the majority of those calls are not even fire related! * We have learned from the Citizen’s Oversight Committee that the $25 million dollar School Bond does not protect the taxpayer’s money. The Del Norte Unified School District is currently under investigation by an outside organization. Findings substantiate that the Oversight Committee has not operated in an INDEPENDENT and LEGAL capacity since its inception 12 years ago. My name is Annelisee Huppert. I am reaching on behalf of my friend Sheila Reed. Her 14-yearold daughter, Katauna Whisenant, has been missing since July 2021. We are wanting to spread awareness in our community and surrounding communities as well. We do have a report with Crescent City Police Department, as well as other law enforcement agencies. We are hoping you are able to share on social media and in the newspaper. It’s important that our community is aware of missing indigenous women and children and how it is happening in our own community. Being a mother myself I could not imagine what she is going through and I feel it’s important for the Del Norte County and Eureka area to come together and bring her home. Wild Rivers Symphony is back after 2-year hiatus The Wild Rivers Symphony is a local orchestra with membership from (and serving) both Del Norte and Curry counties. Dan Sedgwick, the symphony director, is dedicated to featuring modern, cutting-edge pieces as well as those beloved for centuries. For example, we’ve featured lush video game music from contemporary composers such as Nobuo Uematsu, and introduced the works of young diverse American composers. One thing that has fascinated me about our area is the fact that there is an unusually high percentage of very accomplished musicians – from classical to jazz – for such a relatively small population. It is a resource that enriches the entire community in many ways, and it should be a source of pride. Because the orchestra had to take a two-year hiatus due to COVID at the same time many new people moved to our communities, I thought an article in the Triplicate could be an opportunity to introduce everyone to the symphony and talk about some of the benefits of experiencing and/or participating in live music performances. It could also be a chance to invite both participation and support from new community members and highlight some of the unique individual talents. In full disclosure, we have our spring concerts coming up on May 22 and 23, so it would also be a chance to “spread the word.” It is also notable that both Curry and Del Norte county schools have dedicated music K-12 music programs at a time when many school districts in much larger areas have sadly eliminated those programs. But, even though the
symphony’s concerts are free for students through grade 12 and very inexpensive for adults, we don’t get a lot of youth in attendance. Since enjoyment of music is a gift that lasts a lifetime, I’d like to change that. Candace Tinkler Ms. Tinkler, the change has begun with your letter. The Triplicate will help “spread the word,” as you suggest. Just keep us informed!
Gitlin toots the dog whistle for Trump Republicans I was pleased to see the updated opinion page in last week’s paper. Three local folks with varied opinions who will apparently be a weekly feature. As a relatively new resident of Del Norte County, 3-1/2 years, I’m still learning about local issues & politics, but have fallen in love with the natural beauty and small town flavor of the North Coast. While I enjoyed reading all 3 guest columns, I was a bit taken aback by a couple of Mr. Gitlin’s comments. He mentioned “RINO” a few times referring to some local Republicans, and that label seems to be a dog whistle to the radical Trump wing of the GOP. The faction of that Party that still believes Trump is president and the violent criminals who participated in the January 6, 2021, insurrection are “patriots.” He also appears to have issues with the TolowaDee-Ni Tribe. The original Native Americans of this area who have suffered through some very hard times to finally reclaim some of their land that was stolen from them. I admit I am not yet aware of all the ins and outs of these local issues, but will be very interested in Mr. Gitlin’s future columns to see if he follows the Trump playbook. Lastly, I noticed in Mr. Gitlin didn’t include climate change and the recent attacks on a woman’s right to reproductive health in his list of concerns. Crescent City Art Crescent City Art at 1228 2nd St., Crescent City, is open to the public Wednesday - Saturday from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. The gallery’s Artist of the Month is painter Susan Humphries. SPARKS STILL FLYING WHEN COUPLE RECONNECT
DEAR ABBY: I reconnected with an old flame, "Ollie," eight years ago. We would see each other and catch up during a weekly event he hosted. We're both married with kids. We kept it non-physical but connected emotionally. We chatted every day and confessed our attraction to each other while still not engaging in anything more than our weekly encounters among friends. People often assumed we were husband and wife. At the time, I was going through a horrible period in my marriage. My husband, "Pete," was emotionally abusive and one night even threatened to kill me. Pete and I went to couples counseling, and I went to counseling on my own. During the first five years of reconnecting with Ollie, he was supportive, accepting and very kind. I fell in love with him, and he with me. We had one quick hug before I left for the holidays. When I returned, we had an intimate kiss. Then COVID hit. Obviously, there was no physical contact after that kiss, but we still talk nearly every day. We have seen each other at business functions among friends twice in three months. Pete has actually changed and has apologized for how he treated me. We got along nicely during the quarantine. I am just no longer attracted to him. I no longer trust him. He knows nothing of my friendship with Ollie. I also don't think Ollie will ever give in to his feelings for me. What can I do? -- CONFOUNDED IN IOWA DEAR CONFOUNDED: Go back to your counselor. You have some heavy decisions to make about how you want to live the rest of your life. Some people are so fearful of the prospect of being alone that they stay in empty or abusive relationships. Overall, it's calm and quiet, which is why I moved here. My favorite pastime and form of exercise is to go to the pool. However, some neighbors think nothing of playing their music loudly in the pool area. I would never subject anyone else to my taste in music in such a public arena, and I can't understand why they think they have the right to inflict it on other people without asking. I have spoken to them politely and asked that they refrain, but they continue to do exactly as they want. Any suggestions? -- DESPERATELY SEEKING PEACE AND QUIET DEAR DESPERATELY: Because you have spoken to the neighbors about this with no success, I will offer some suggestions. The first would be to bring this to the attention of the manager and the board of directors of your condominium association. Another solution could be as simple as the music lovers wearing ear buds to enjoy their music without bothering others.
