There will be a groundfish season in 2024. Effective immediately, CDFW announced the saltwater season will begin in April. The exact date will be determined this week by the State Office of Administrative Law, a formality to ensure legal compliance. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), last Thursday, followed all recommendations of the Pacific Fisheries Management Council (PFMC). A Big Welcome Awaits Japanese Delegation celebrating Kamome Festival BY ROGER GITLIN Country Media, Inc.

Crescent City and Del Norte County welcome sister city Rikuzentakata and its official Japanese delegation for the Kamome Festival, April 11-13. Japan and The United States through its Sister Agreement, celebrate the 10th anniversary of The Kamome, a diminutive seacraft built and owned by the local high-school in Rikuzentakata. The vessel drifted across the Pacific for over two years following the Tohoku Earthquake / Tsunami disaster in 2011. Over 2,000 people were killed when a13 meter high wave slammed into the community. The tragedy began the journey in establishing a permanent friendship across the Pacific. The relationship established involved the City of Rikunzentakata, its

The public braved cold, rainy weather and paid respects to the memories of the victims on the 60th anniversary of the worst Tsunami in the United States ever. The event was hosted by the City at the Cultural Center. 11 individuals lost their lives, another 60 suffered injuries, an estimated $40 million in damage (1964 dollars) devastation covered 30 plus blocks March

27-28, 1964. Dr. Lori Dengler, Professor Emeritus in the Geology Dept. at Cal Poly Humboldt University delivered a compelling presentation to those in attendance. Professor Dengler recounted what she referred as the flood following the earthquake, in an era when the public was not so familiar with the word tsunami. wage for Fast Food workers Soars, No Foolin’

The minimum wage for fast food workers soared 25 percent, effective April 1. The wage hike affects ONLY CALIFORNIA. Employees of fast food franchises will now make $20 per hour. The impact locally and up and down the Golden State is profound. In Crescent City, franchises or company stores totaling over 60, must now pay their employees the higher rate, effective immediately. Employees who work in this industry are among the lowest paid, across the state and country. Nationally, the minimum wage is $7.65 per hour. Rural Oregon which includes Brookings has a $13.20 hourly minimum wage. Now, California has skyrocketed its fast food minimum wage to $20 per hour.
