DNUSD Releases RIF Announcement BY ROGER GITLIN Country Media, Inc.

BY ROGER GITLIN Country Media, Inc.

The Del Norte Unified School District announced Budget Realignment and Staffing adjustments also known as an RIF, a reduction in workforce. A decline of approximately 450 students resulting in a loss of $6.2 million in state funding, combined with rising operational costs has forced the District to take necessary measures to secure long-term financial stability while maintaining quality education for students. The two driving factors for the RIF are: • Declining enrollment and funding shortfalls. A 50 percent increase in electricity and rising fuel costs contributed to an unsustainable fiscal environment. • Expiration of COVID-Era Supplemental funds. During the Pandemic the District received one-time funds that enabled instructional and support staff and librarians to address learning loss and other urgent needs. The RIF will impact both Classified and Certificated positions.
