No one seriously injured in plane crash Mechanical issue forces men to crash land near Fort Dick By David Rupkalvis The Triplicate
Two men escaped with minor injuries when a small Cessna airplane crashed Sunday in a field in Fort Dick. According to information released by the Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office, Field Morey was piloting a Cessna 182 aircraft with co-pilot Seth Hoffstetter. The plane left Medford, Oregon and had mechanical issues, which forced the duo to crash land the plane in a marshy area near the end of Buzzini Road. While the plane flipped on landing and landed on its top, the two men were able to escape with minor injuries. The men called 9-1-1 to report the accident, saying they were safe but were stuck in the marsh. Responding sheriff’s deputies were able to bring the men to safety. After escaping from the marsh, the men were also able to meet the 911 dispatcher, who they said was extremely helpful.

It was a ribbon cutting only a pandemic and a winter storm could bring. Speeches? Only through an online livestream.
The ribbon? A piece of caution tape, stretched between two road signs. The fancy scissors used to cut it? The front of the fire chief’s truck. Crescent City officials and residents gathered in their cars, trucks and city vehicles Jan. 26 to cele-
brate the reopening of Front Street after months of construction on its southwest end. Heavy rains and high winds didn’t dampen the jovial mood of the event, which turned into a brief parade as cars lined up to drive down the street. For City Manager
Eric Weir, the weather only sweetened the event. “It says a lot about our community, too,” Weir said in an interview afterwards. “It made it all the more special to do it in what we call a ‘Del Norter.’”

Crescent City police are looking for a man who fired up to five shots from a shotgun into a vehicle in the 700 block of C Street shortly early Monday morning. At 12:35 a.m., police received a 911 call from a woman who said she heard multiple gunshots outside her home on C Street. When officers arrived, they located a vehicle that appeared to have been shot multiple times in the engine compartment. Officers also found several empty shotgun shells on the ground. Police Chief Richard Griffin said officers believe a man fired five shots using a 12-guage shotgun into the engine of the vehicle. Using music to bring people together in a pandemic By David Rupkalvis The Triplicate
In a time of a global pandemic where it feels like people are always fighting, Tricia Bartlett-Iverson has a suggestion – turn to music. The founder and executive director of Harmony and Me Music, Bartlett-Iverson has seen firsthand the power of music to bring people and cultures together. “Music is the most powerful tool,” she said. “It does so much for therapeutic purposes alone. There are very few people in the world who can’t engage with music.” Bartlett-Iverson knows how music can impact people, and she hopes to bring that impact to more and more people. Her nonprofit Harmony and Me is based in Brookings, but she hopes to bring it and the power of music to Crescent City and many others places soon. By any description, Bartlett-Iverson had a difficult childhood, spending most of her youth in foster homes. Music gave her a sense of direction then, and her vision of using music to bring people together first started as a 5-year-old. “It was an experience I had in the community I was in, and I

didn’t like it,” she said. “There were all these differences, and no one was coming together. So, I started dreaming of a way to bring us together. We’re all suck here, we might as well get along.” In 2009, while living in the San Francisco area, Bartlett-Iverson launched Harmony and Me as a way to teach young children music and provide comfort and entertainment to the elderly. She taught music to pre-schoolers at Mission San Jose and would bring the youngsters to assisted living facilities where they would sing for the patients. The result was inspiring for both age groups. When she moved to Brookings, Bartlett-Iverson brought her idea with her and relaunched Harmony and Me. While the pandemic has changed things, it has not stopped her dream. “Right now, we do Zoom classes,” Bartlett-Iverson said. “It’s OK. We might do outside classes. I’m doing babies up to 10 years old.” With assisted living facilities locked down due to COVID, the singers have not been able to perform in person, but Bartlett-Iverson has again turned to technology to reach out to the seniors. After Mayor Jason Greenough and Fire Chief Bill Gillespe broke through the ceremonial caution tape, officially opening the street, city councilors followed in fire trucks and other city vehicles. As members from the Northern Knights Car Club turned down the street, the parade drove over the new pavement and improved drainage, passing a new angled parking lot and improved crosswalks which reduced the road’s size from five to two lanes. “This is just the beginning of many wonderful things to come here for Crescent City,” Human Resources Manager Sunny Valero said as she hosted the livestreamed event. The street had been closed since July, when the city began construction using a $4 million Community Development Block Grant — but Weir said the project has been a long time in the making. “There’s been a lot of struggles to actually get this project under construction,” Weir said. The biggest struggle was funding: The city applied for a handful of different grants to fund the project, most to no avail. The CBDG funds the city ended up receiving were specifically designated for the repair of the storm drain underneath. But of course, the only way to get to the storm drain

That plan covers all of Front Street, from B Street to the highway — but the construction only touched the road between B Street and H Street. That means there’s still another phase of the street left to upgrade. Beyond fixing the street’s “major structural problems,” Wier said future the next phase of upgrades will include a meander midway through the street with landscaping in the median in an effort to break up the fast-moving road and invite drivers into Beachfront Park. A roundabout at B Street is envisioned, too. Still, Weir said residents will have to be patient for those future improvements. The city currently doesn’t have the money for the improvements, which could cost in the neighborhood of $3.5 million. “This is just the first phase,” he said. “It might take some time.” That means the city will have to apply for more grants, and consider how it uses funding from new Measure S taxes. But if they were able to fund upgrades to the southwest half of the street, Weir is confident city leaders can do it again. “There is a way, and we

It changes the dynamic of the environment. Our hope is to
expand programs and to also use technology.” With classes now on Zoom, Bartlett-Iverson said she can have grandparents in one location sign up for classes with their grandchildren in another. They can get together weekly and sing and make their own music. “We have ways to connect families like never before,” she said. While there are fees associated with the classes, Bartlett-Iverson said scholarships are available for families in need. She currently teaches music classes for newborns to 10 years old. She is also working to enlist
teens to work with seniors on technology. She has plans to distribute iPads to assisted living facilities and hopes the teens can lead distance classes to teach the seniors how to use them. The iPads can then be used to visit with family, send messages and even do important things like sign up for the COVID vaccine. While her work today is in Brookings, Bartlett-Iverson is working on a model that can easily be transferred anywhere in the nation. With a trained teacher, Harmony and Me can be used to touch lives anywhere, she said. While Bartlett-Iverson has
been working with her nonprofit for more than a decade, it is a labor of love. She does not get paid and maintains a full-time job to cover her expenses. A few grants have helped provide things like the iPads and music materials she loans out, but it’s mostly a labor of love. “This is just passion work, this is totally passion work,” she said. “It’s a calling. The Klamath volunteer crew is the first to arrive at motor vehicle accidents, structure fires and human health-related crises as well as many other types of emergencies. Similar to many other rural areas, the closest ambulance is approximately 45 minutes away. It can take much longer if there are multiple concurrent incidents in distant locations. The highly trained Klamath volunteer team often performs life-saving procedures to stabilize patients before the medical transport vehicle arrives to take them to the hospital. “The Klamath Fire Protection District plays an integral role in protecting our community and our infrastructure. Last week, the Yurok Tribe donated a brand new, fully equipped fire truck to the Klamath Fire Protection District. “This donation will greatly enhance the health and safety of all residents in southern Del Norte County and northern Humboldt County,� said Joseph L. James, the chairman of the Yurok Tribe. “COVID-19 has shown us that we need to enhance our local emergency response capacity because we can’t necessarily depend on anyone else. The contribution to the Klamath Fire Protection District is one way that we are supporting our local first responders.� “Whether it’s a structure fire or medical aid call, the Klamath Fire Protection District is always the first to respond. It was an easy decision to invest in the future of the department,� said Ryan Ray, the Yurok Tribal Council’s Requa district representative. From my first visit after moving here 6 years ago, I knew your library was going to be a different experience for my family. From Ms. Hilary including my child with special needs into her reading time with his younger siblings (he was 7) to Ms. Nillie starting a Lego club where children could come alive and express themselves, this library is the most kid friendly and accepting place I have ever been. As soon as you step in, you feel love
and loved. I miss my children feeling okay to be kids and explore with wonder and joy the shelves and shelves of books. I have never heard a child be told to ‘Shhhhhhhh!’ but rather have seen so much patience and understanding. There have been a lot of questions this last month about vaccination, and we mentioned last month that we wanted to do a weekly note for a while. That did not happen, and we apologize, but it was not through lack of intent. We have been a bit busy. Vaccination for COVID is pretty much on track as per the plan we submitted to the State Health Department. We are still working with some persons in the 1a category, but we have also moved to top tier in the 1b category in Del Norte County. We had a drive through clinic for 1a candidates last week and did over 200 vaccinations. We plan another similar event this week, moving into 1b candidates. We are also supplying local medical offices with vaccines, so they can start moving through their elderly patient populations. The biggest problem is vaccine supply, which is true for every county in the state and around the nation. There is little we can do to offset that, other than to be careful about not vaccinating too far in advance. We don’t think it helps to have to cancel second doses later on. Fortunately, the CDC experts have given a confident recommendation that a delayed second dose has few consequences. They are now officially saying that a second dose timing can be extended, and that a second dose of either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine can be given out to six weeks after the first dose. In truth, it is probably much longer than that, but this gives us some flexibility in scheduling and doing follow up doses. So far, the reactions that people have experienced are
pretty much as expected. The most common complaint is soreness in the arm, or flulike symptoms for a day or two. Most of the feedback we have had about vaccination has been good. A few basic pointers about vaccine: • We think that for now, if you have had the infection and recovered, especially if it has been less than 90 days since you had it, your natural immunity is as good as vaccination. The CDC says that you are eligible, but we think that with the vaccine being as scarce as it is, we would prefer those persons to wait. • If you get your first dose, and then become infected before you get your second dose, you have the option of declining the second dose, but again, the CDC states that you can complete the two doses as planned. The only requirement that is different is that you wait for the second dose until you have finished isolation for the infection itself. • If you think that you are eligible by virtue of age, please contact us at Public Health or your healthcare provider to let them know that you are interested in getting vaccinated. If you have a local medical office, we ask that you contact them first. We or they (your provider office) will get back to you, when a vaccine can be given. At public health, we are in the process of enrolling with a new state sponsored enrollment program that will make the process of getting a vaccine “appointment” much simpler. Currently we are trying to focus on 75 and above first, but 65 and above, especially with serious health issues are also candidates for vaccination over the next few months. All we (or your healthcare provider) need are your name, date of birth and
you telling us to add you to the lists. Healthcare offices will be vaccinating using their own office information about patients. • If you think that you are eligible by virtue of employment, then let your employer know, and if you are an employer in the 1a or 1b vaccination tiers, then start a list of employees that want to be vaccinated and let us know who you are. Right now, the best route for vaccination of employees is by working with our department. And, a few words about the other tiers, the Blueprint for a Safer Economy Tiers system. We are in Purple, the most restrictive tier, and there have been a lot of questions about when and how we can move back up the tiers and start seeing some businesses reopen again. The state rules are pretty strict for moving UP the Tiers (from Purple to Red, for example), and are different than for moving down the Tiers; we stayed in Orange Tier for a long time last fall, because of some special rules about tiers that affected small counties. Those rules, however, were only to prevent unnecessary movement DOWN the Tiers (Orange to Red, for example). For us to move back up again, to Red Tier, we need to average less than 2 cases a day and hold that for 2 consecutive weeks that are measured by the state health department. The last date of reporting for our current tier assignment was January 16, so for those who are following this, everything that has happened since is what will eventually count towards a tier change. By the way, our data for daily totals and our running totals are from different sources, so they may be off a little. We wish it were less complicated, but it is what we have to live with

DAR volunteers help clean up parking lot next to point of honor
Del Norte Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution gathered Jan. 23 for a Community Clean-Up event. Putting the DAR motto, “God, Home and Country,” into action, the volunteers cleaned around the point of honor to the adjacent parking lot area. With the recent high tides, winter rains and winds, a variety of unsightly debris had accumulated throughout the clean-up area. I attended a ranger program recently dealing with Leave No Trace. The ranger showed a picture of rock art, or “ancestral inscriptions” as archaeologists often refer to the practice. We agreed that one does not touch or otherwise deface it. Then she flashed a shot of some modern graffiti nearby - think of a heart, two names and the word “forever.” “Is this OK?” “No” was the reaction that came easily from all of us. “But why? Isn’t it just modern rock art?” she asked. Indeed. Why are 800-yearold handprints sacrosanct, but not if hacked onto rock walls on public land today? At Capitol Reef National Park in Utah, 19th century
pioneers scratched their names and the date into the rocks. Why is this a no-no for the modern visitor? The pioneers endured drought, famine, disease and death in order to reach the West and scratch their names on the wall. The modern hiker had to drive 100 miles from the airport in air conditioning and then walk a good half-mile. Isn’t that “suffering” just as important? One difference may be that now we have the written word, videos, social media and blogs to preserve our encounters with nature for eternity. Four thousand years ago, the only way some people had to express themselves was by drawing on the rocks. One could argue that ancient rock art is also sacred, places of power that record the history of the people.
Marjorie “Slim” Woodruff Yet some modern-day hikers claim that they, too, hold the land sacred, and that their writings on rock also record their history. There are places in our public lands that are wellknown worship sites. Devil’s Tower in Wyoming. Deer Creek narrows in the Grand Canyon. The Sacred Salt Mines on the Colorado River. But when the Park Service tries to close them to visitors to protect them, there is a hue and cry: “This land is just as important to me as it was to them!”
I consider wilderness areas to be spiritual. But saying they are “sacred” to me would push the boundary. Appreciation and worship are not the same. I would posit that as dearly as I hold the Grand Canyon in my heart, the Grand Canyon is not the tradition in which I was raised, and I cannot, as the Hopi and Zuni can, claim the canyon to be my place of emergence. I was once privileged to attend a tour of rock art sites led by a Hopi. A New Age visitor proudly announced that her spirit guide was a Hopi shaman. I cringed, but our guide just nodded politely. For too many years, there existed a group of Anglo businessmen in Northern Arizona who dressed up and simulated Hopi and Zuni dances during the local rodeo. They claimed to be honoring and preserving native religions. The Hopi rightly complained that they themselves honor and preserve the
dances and ceremonies. They did not need “help.” The Boy Scouts of America has appropriated Indian culture since the group’s founding in 1902. But backlash against Indian costumes and dances have now prompted the Boy Scouts to advise troops to check with local tribes to ascertain if such activities are offensive. Even so, certain troops still perform Indian dances as a form of “educational exploration.” Lisa Aldred, the author of “Plastic Shamans and Astroturf Sun Dances,” argues that fetishizing masks made by Native Americans perpetuates the oppression that real Indian people experienced. You might ask whether appropriating rock art sites for our own use is part of this process. Native Americans have had their religion borrowed and taken over by Anglos for a long time, including building sweat lodges, fasting, using peyote and making
rock circles. We also go much farther than appropriation as we destroy what we want to imitate. Modern graffiti is often deposited over centuries-old rock art, and in some parts of the country, rock art has been used for target practice. Stacking up rocks, painting rocks, scratching poetry into the walls - it’s all part of the “look at me!” culture. Would anyone spray paint over Leonardo DaVinci’s Last Supper? OK, someone probably would, but would anyone defend this vandalism? Let’s hope that selfies in the great outdoors lead to a good thing: As visitors record themselves standing next to rock art, they might keep their hands to themselves.
