Weapons used in violent crimes cannot be sold under state law By DAVID RUPKALVIS The Triplicate
Crescent City will soon begin selling guns in has been storing in the police evidence locker. The city council voted unanimously to authorize the police department to sell the guns, some that were used in crimes, but many simply left behind over the last few decades. Police Chief Richard Griffin told the council one huge task he has undertaken is cleaning out the evidence locker. Much of the evidence has been destroyed or turned virtual, but the department has done nothing to date with the
100-plus guns it has been storing. “This started when I took over,” Griffin said. “We did an audit of certain things. One of the main ones was the evidence room. It’s been a couple of years.” Griffin said the evidence room was packed with evidence from the ‘70s on and was so full the door could barely open. He said while the department has been able to make some gains in cleaning out old evidence, it had two options for the council to consider in regards to firearms. State law allows police departments to either destroy firearms or sell them through a
licensed federal firearms dealer. “I know when I took over, you could barely open the door to the evidence room,” he explained. “I could show it to you now and you can almost walk to the back.” The department has found at least 100 firearms, many than can be disposed of. Any weapon used in a murder case must be held for 99 years and weapons used in other violent crimes must also be stored for a certain amount of time. “Anything that qualifies as an assault weapon cannot be sold

Folks that live and visit the coast between Northern California and Oregon are discovering sea pickles on the sandy beaches. The Seaside Aquarium reports the sea pickles or sea squirts, known as pyrosomes, are washing up all along the coast. “We came across one on the beach yesterday, but we have reports of hundreds down on the
beach in Florence,” the aquarium’s Facebook post reads. People adding their comments to the aquarium’s post state that they have found the sea pickles at Cannon Beach, Tierra del Mar, Manzanita and Lincoln City. One person wrote, “No doubt from the volcano area off Tonga,” referring to a recent undersea eruption that recently trigger small tsunami waves along the Oregon Coast. The pyrosomes are most com-

As the ocean currents change with the seasons, beachcombers have been finding an abundance of pyrosomes along the hightide line. The aquarium states in its post that Pyrosoma atlanticum is the most observed species found along Oregon and California beaches. They are described as
a rigid, bumpy, pinkish-gray tube about the size of a finger. Throughout the world pyrosomes can range in size from a few centimeters to over 30 feet long, but the common Pyrosoma atlanticum reaches a maximum length of two feet. “These totally tubular critters are actually known as a colonial tunicate, a mass of thousands of smaller organisms with a rigid notochord (a simplistic backbone),” the aquarium post reads.

Active COVID-19 cases in Del Norte County reached a new high this week with Del Norte County Public Health reporting 384 active cases and 661 cases reported in the last two weeks. Del Norte County also reported a 42nd COVID-linked death, although information on the latest victim was not available. One bit of good news amid the Omicron surge in Del Norte County is hospitalizations remain relatively low, with only three people in the hospital. That
aligns with a report from Public Health Officer Dr. Aaron Stutz, who said he does not expect the Omicron surge to push Sutter Coast Hospital to the brink. The report of three in the hospital on February 1 was a big drop from 10 just the day before. As of February 1, Del Norte County has reported 5,166 COVID cases over the last two years with 42 deaths. More than half the total cases have been in people ranging in age from 18 to 49, with 22% in children 17 and under, 16% in those ages 50 to 64 and only 8% over age 65.
After a rash of seven new cases reported at Shutter Creek Correctional Institute last week, only one new case was reported in the prison this week. Since the beginning of the pandemic 371 cases have been reported at the prison. In Del Norte County schools, the information this week as cloudy with the district reporting staffing shortages due to a large number of COVID cases has made it difficult for the district to update its COVID dashboard where it has been sharing information with parents. its quarantine rules to align with the county public health rules. The new policy requires anyone who tests positive to quarantine for five days, where they can return to school if they have a negative test. Without a test, all COVID-positive students and staff must quarantine for 10 days. If students or staff are in close contact with someone with COVID, only those who are not fully vaccinated are now required to quarantine. According to public health, 54.4% of all residents over the age of 12 have been fully vaccinated with 7% partially vaccinated.
The city council is Crescent City will continue to meet virtually as the COVID-19 pandemic rages in Del Norte County. At their last meeting in January, the city council voted 4-1 to continue the virtual meetings for another 30 days while promising to look at the issue again during its first meeting in February. The council voted in December to move to virtual meetings for a month due to the COVID surge, and with that time ending, council members had to decide whether to extend the virtual sessions or return to in-person meetings. “Cases continue to rise in our community,” City Manager Eric Wier told the council. “Over the last weekend, there was 127 cases. Thankfully, hospitalizations have not risen significantly.’ Wier said the county did change its quarantine policies, allowing many COVID-positive residents to return to normal life after five days. He said being able to meet virtually has a lot of positives. “For us, going to virtual meetings has allowed us to meet fully as a council when we would not have been able to,” Wier said. “There are a plethora of cases out there. It is not uncommon to be in close contact with some of the cases and needing to quarantine or isolate.” After hearing from Wier, the council discussed how to move forward. “I would like to have seen Dr. (Aaron) Stutz here and seen a presentation from him to see where we are going with the surge before we made this decision,” Mayor Jason Greenough said. Wier explained Stutz was working at the hospital that night, but he said the public health authority expects the surge to continue into February. Wier said the county was expecting the hospital to handle the surge OK. “In a perfect world, we should be in the Flynn Center,” Councilor Blake Inscore said. “With 127 cases this weekend and hospitalizations up to five, I’m OK with this.” Inscore suggested having an item on the agenda at the council’s first meeting this month to change back to in-person if the numbers allow. On Monday, January 24, 2022, John Paton Kaufmann, loving husband and father of four children passed away unexpectedly at the age of 75. John was born in Susanville, Calif. on July 31, 1946. He

later moved to Calistoga, Calif. where he spent his childhood. John graduated from Calistoga High School in 1964. John then followed in his father’s footsteps and joined the United States Marine Corps. Soon after receiving an honorable discharge, he joined the California Highway Patrol. John worked as a traffic officer for 30 years. He loved his job and never tired of it. In January, 1982, John and his family moved to Crescent City, Calif. In addition to having a career he loved he discovered his love of fishing. John spent every possible moment on the Smith or Klamath Rivers catching salmon and steelhead. He made many lifelong friends on those Rivers. He never forgot any of
them. John retired from the California Highway Patrol on May 2002. After the death of their daughter John and Linda moved to Texarkana, Texas where they lived for 8 years. In October 2020, they moved back to the western US and settled in Lakebay, Washington to be near their son Andrew and his family. John was preceded in death by his father, Walter, his mother, Edith, his brother, Bruce, his sister, Martha and his only daughter, Amy. He is survived by his wife, Linda, his sons, Michael, Brian and Andrew, his sister Edie Ann Petersen, 6 grandchildren and several cousins, nieces, nephews. There will be no formal service. John and Amy’s ashes will be scattered privately.
Free large item dump day set in Klamath Caltrans District 1 announced a free large item dump day in Klamath scheduled for Sunday, February 27, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. The dump day event is part of the Clean California initiative and a collaboration with the County of Del Norte Solid Waste Management Authority, the Yurok tribe, and Recology. Residents in the area are encouraged to bring their large, bulky items to the Klamath Transfer Station at Klamath Beach Road. Accepted items include furniture, appliances, tires, and mattresses. All items must be empty. There is a limit of four items per trip. This is the first of a series of Dump Days planned for Del Norte County. Future events include Saturday, March 12, for the community of Gasquet, as well as Summer 2022 events for Crescent City and Smith River communities.
Building on previous actions to ensure gender and pay equity, Governor Gavin Newsom, First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom and the California Department of Human Resources recently announced the state of California has signed the California Equal Pay Pledge, an initiative the first partner launched to close the gender pay gap. The latest Women’s Earnings Report, which includes state employee pay data from 2020, indicates that the state worker gender pay gap has trended downward since 2010. In 2010, the civil service gender pay gap was 21.3 percent and decreased to 14.3 percent in 2020. For the first time, the Women’s Earnings Report incorporates additional data sets to provide a better understanding of how state employees are compensated in each bargaining unit.

I’m really leaning toward a special meeting, and I’d really like to have Dr. Stutz at the meeting.” But that idea was firmly rejected by one councilor. “No,” Councilor Ray Altman said. “I don’t want anymore special meetings, especially for that. Can’t was just wait for this to blow over? Now you want to have a meeting about a meeting. Stop having meetings about meetings.”
Mayor Pro Tem Isaiah Wright told the council because of his job, there’s a good chance he would not be able to attend in-person meetings while Omicron is around. “There are classrooms all over the school district closing own,” Wright said. “My son is currently in isolation. For me, it could be hard to get to a couple of meetings. I have more than my family that could keep me from getting to a meeting. I have 28 other families.” Inscore then made a motion to extend the virtual meetings for 30 more days with Altman seconding it. The vote passed 4-1 with Smith voting no.

When will Black history become part of American history? By Wayne Hare It’s February — the month we celebrate the achievements and history of Black Americans. You can be sure we’ll hear about the brave souls that risked or even gave their lives to achieve rights guaranteed in the Declaration of Independence. We’ll hear about great Black jazz musicians like Duke Ellington and about barrier-breaking athletes like Jackie Robinson. Most have become household names. There will be quotes galore from Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. But there are forgotten and fascinating people we also ought to learn about, such as Bass Reeves, one of the first U.S. marshals appointed to the Indian Territories. He served for 32 years in that capacity, making over 3,000 felony arrests and killing 14 men in the process. Upon his death in 1910, he received a backhanded tribute in the Muskogee Phoenix: “And it is lamentable that we as white people must go to this poor, simple old negro to learn a lesson in courage, honesty and faithfulness to official duty.” Another person to learn about is Matthew Henson, a courageous Black American who dragged an ailing Robert Peary across the finish line on a sled, making Henson technically the first human ever to reach the North Pole. Yet it was Peary who was lauded and promoted to rear admiral, while Henson was given an honorary burial at Arlington National Cemetery. Then there’s Mary Eliza Mahoney, who, in 1879, became the first Black American to earn a professional nursing license. Unable to get a job in public nursing because of discrimination, she worked as a private nurse, and in 1908, co-founded the National Association of Colored Graduate Nurses. You will find Black people threaded throughout our complex history, and that is what bothers me about Black History Month: Why does America need a special month to acknowledge that Black Americans are truly a part of our story? Why, in many colleges and high schools, might Black history be taught as its own course, yet when it comes to courses in “American history,” Black involvement is mostly confined to the Civil War and the Civil Rights movement? Don’t we belong here? Maybe Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell was just confused recently when, after Senate Democrats failed to pass a voting rights act, he said, “African American voters are voting in just as high a percentage as Americans.” McConnell said he made an inadvertent mistake. I look forward to a time that we celebrate Black Americans’ full inclusion in the American Dream of democracy and nation building, even if that history

Wayne Hare includes painful episodes that make us cringe today. We have had a long fight for rights that we still do not enjoy, like full, unrestricted voting privileges. The recent move of some states to decrease access to the polls seems a throwback to the Jim Crow wave of discrimination that followed the Civil War. If I seem grouchy, I plead guilty. But what I reckon when I read about the past is that it’s been 157 years since the end of the war that freed Black slaves, 68 years after Brown vs. Board of Education mandated equal education for Blacks, 58 years after the Civil Rights Act assured all people equal rights under the law, and 57 years after Congress passed the Voting Rights Act, which assured everyone the right to vote. Yet here we are, still on the margins of acceptance. I want us to acknowledge that Black Americans are a part of the American story, along with its villains and heroes, its quirky individuals, and its ordinary and often conflicted citizens. Black Americans should be woven into the narrative because, in fact, Black Americans helped shape the American story, fighting in world wars, pressing for basic rights and working every job they could get in the face of discrimination. Fifteen years ago, she was diagnosed with cancer and given 18 months to live. Well, she is still around. Because of the illness and experimental medications, she was bedridden, and her dementia grew steadily worse. Left with no other options because of problems with insurance, I placed her into a nursing facility six years ago. I am still at an age at which I have, I hope, many active years ahead of me. I visit her often, but I have a need for companionship that she obviously can no longer fulfill. I’m friends with a few women (usually friends of friends), and from time to time have the urge to become closer. I go out to dinners, music venues, art shows, etc. I am torn about whether to live my remaining days in loneliness or pursue the possibilities. Is it wrong to want companionship in my situation? At what point should I explain my situation without scaring off a nice lady friend? Your opinion would be helpful to me as another perspective. -ANONYMOUS, OF COURSE DEAR ANONYMOUS: What happened to your wife is unfortunate, and you both have my sympathy. Wanting and needing companionship are normal. It is important to ask yourself: If the situation were reversed and YOU were in a nursing home suffering from dementia, to what extent would you want your wife to go on with HER life? Whatever you decide after that, it is crucial you not forget you have a responsibility to make sure she is being well cared for. This means visiting her often to ensure it, because dementia patients do better when they know someone loves them. As to how to explain to women that you are married, well, the ones who are friends of friends already know that. And those you meet who don’t know should be told during
the course of your first serious conversation. It’s the honorable thing to do. DEAR ABBY: I got married six months ago to an awesome guy. Now we’re expecting. Although I don’t want the child, I am trying hard to want it. But I keep coming back to overwhelming regret, because it is too soon. I know this means the world to him. Truly, he is amazing, but his light is my doom. I need time away from him to see how I feel. We are never apart, and it’s making me irritable, like I have nothing of my own anymore. HE’S ALWAYS THERE. I suppose it is a good thing, but I can’t breathe. What do I do? I feel like an awful wife and person now. What if the baby comes and I turn into some evil mom? -- NEUROTIC IN NEVADA DEAR NEUROTIC: Healthy relationships, marriage included, are all about honest communication. Tell your amazing husband you need time alone to recharge and process your thoughts. Was he this way before you were married, or could it be because you are pregnant and, in his eyes, “vulnerable”? You are not an awful person for needing alone time, and it won’t make you an evil mom, so calm your fears. You may just need respite, which you won’t receive until you make it known. Because, I assume, you are seeing your OB-GYN regularly, it is important you discuss the emotions you are experiencing with them. You may be suffering from depression, which some pregnant women do. We marked the 12th annual commemoration of “school choice week” last week, and those who value parents’ rights to direct the education of their children have cause for hopeful optimism. The United States Supreme Court recently heard oral argument in Carson v. Makin, a case out of Maine that presents an opportunity for the court to continue its recent trend of protection for religious liberty in our public schools and expand educational options for parents and students. The state of Maine includes some rural areas where the student population isn’t high enough to justify building or operating a public school. To address this, the state provides a tuition scholarship that parents can use to pay for educating their children at the school of their choice. However, the program specifically prohibits the parents from using the funds to send their children to the school of their choice if that chosen school is a religious school. The state justifies this discrimination on a state law prohibiting public funding of religion and a mistaken interpretation of the U.S. Constitution’s establishment clause, claiming that parents using their own tax dollars to pay tuition at a religious school somehow establishes an official religion of the state. The state of Montana also had a mechanism for funding parental education choices that until recently also barred religious schools. The U.S. Supreme Court in Espinoza v Montana struck down Montana’s restriction on that state’s school choice program. The state laws
in Montana, Maine, and elsewhere are historically rooted in period of anti-Catholic discrimination by states when Blaine amendments used the term “religion” as a euphemism for Catholicism. Thankfully, in Espinoza the Court made it clear, citing its decision Trinity Lutheran v Comer, that when government provides a benefit or program to the public, religious institutions have a right to participate in the program. Apparently, the state of Maine and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit didn’t get the memo. While lawyers and judges continually parse the language of case law, the law of unintended consequences remains intact. During the COVID pandemic when children were forced to stay home and learn remotely, many parents learned far more than their children. For the first time, millions of parents were given a firsthand glimpse of what was going on in the classroom. The result was an eye-opening and sometimes anger-inducing epiphany. The school choice movement gained supporters across the country from parents in red, blue, and purple states. Glenn Youngkin won the governorship of Virginia on that issue above any other. The case of Carson v Makin presents more than an opportunity for the Supreme Court to reiterate that it meant what it said in Trinity Lutheran and Espinoza. It is the chance to take another step toward restoring the original intent and text of the First Amendment’s religion clauses. Far from the modern secularist cudgel used to banish religion from public life, it was intended as a shield to protect the proper role of religion in a free and civil society. cably linked, the original intent of education was to produce citizens capable of living in that free and civil society. Consider the Northwest Ordinance, passed in 1787. Article III “Religion, morality, and knowledge being necessary to good government and the happiness of mankind, schools and the means of education shall be forever encouraged.” Nearly two centuries after the ratification of the Constitution, our poet laureate Robert Frost described education as “the ability to listen to almost anything without losing your temper or self-confidence.” Considering our nation’s cancel culture and the cesspool of social media our children navigate daily, could there be a more essential skill? Today, Americans have a myriad of educational models: public, private, charter, homeschooling, and hybrids of all types. Whether parents adhere to the Northwest Ordinance or Robert Frost’s definition of education the choice is and should always be theirs. As we celebrate School Choice Week, let us be ever mindful that parents’ right to direct their children’s learning is more than an educational issue; it’s a freedom issue. More freedom is a good idea and freedom is more than a good idea it’s our God-given, constitutionally protected right. California invests $589 million for transportation improvements The California Transportation Commission last week allocated $589 million for projects to repair and improve transportation infrastructure throughout the state. Senate Bill (SB) 1, the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017, accounts for $302 million – more than half of the funding. “This investment follows our ‘fix-it-first’ commitment to repair California’s aging infrastructure, while at the same time increasing transit and active transportation options,” said Caltrans Director Toks Omishakin. “These projects will make our transportation system safer and more convenient for all users and create thousands of good paying jobs in the process.” Projects approved this week include: · Approximately $1.3 million toward pavement, guardrail, and retaining wall upgrades on U.S. 101 near Crescent City in Humboldt County. · Approximately $11.7 million toward improvements at Pudding Creek Bridge No.100158 on Route 1 in Mendocino County. · Approximately $1.1 million toward pavement, and guardrail upgrades on Route 1 from Philo Greenwood Road to north of Little Lake Road near Mendocino. · Approximately $859,000 toward pavement and guardrail upgrades on Route 1 from north of Rockport Street to U.S. 101 near Leggett in Mendocino County. · Approximately $4.1 million toward a multi-purpose paved trail along Route 162 in Covelo in Mendocino County. Coast Central Credit Union Spring Community Investment Program open Coast Central Credit Union announced that the spring 2022 round of its Community Investment Program is now open. A total of $100,000 is available to support local organizations throughout its tri-county area. Grant amounts generally range from $3,000 to $25,000, and there are usually eight to 12 recipients. The giving program was created in 2008, and since then has awarded a total of over $1.7 million to 175
organizations throughout Humboldt, Del Norte and Trinity counties. Recent grant recipients have included Cooperation Humboldt, Orleans Volunteer Fire Department, and Weaverville Parks & Recreation District. CCCU typically contributes over $400,000 in annual community giving through its grant, sponsorship and college scholarship programs, as well of thousands of volunteer hours throughout its three

DCC orders recall of packaged cannabis flower due to mold contamination California’s Department of Cannabis Control has ordered a mandatory recall after identifying a batch of packaged cannabis flower contaminated with Aspergillus niger. Consumers who purchased Claybourne Co. flower are urged to check their packaging for the UID and batch numbers listed below and dispose of the flower if affected. To date, no illnesses have been reported. DCC is currently investigating the cause of the contamination. The recall affects one batch of packaged cannabis flower, sold in various size jars between November 2, 2021 and January 26: Brand name: Claybourne Co. Strain: Head Banger Track-and-trace UID number: 1A406030000326B000094476 No other brands or Claybourne Co. batches are implicated by this recall. DCC encourages consumers who purchased Claybourne Co. Head Banger flower during the affected timeframe to check their packaging for the UID and batch numbers listed above. If it matches, consumers should either dispose of the flower or return it to the cannabis retailer
where it was purchased. Aspergillus niger, a fungus commonly known as black mold, is a contributor to post-harvest decay of fresh fruit, nuts, cereals and oilseeds. According to the CDC, most people breathe in Aspergillus spores every day without getting sick; however, people with weakened immune systems or lung diseases are at a higher risk of developing health problems due to Aspergillus. The contamination was discovered as a result of information sharing between a third-party and DCC. Samples from multiple retailers were independently tested through DCC’s Cannabis Testing Laboratory and were confirmed to contain Aspergillus. DCC is currently investigating the cause of the contamination. DCC has notified all cannabis retailers and distributors with affected product in their inventory. The licensees are required to immediately quarantine the product and are prohibited from selling it. DCC has provided guidance and will work closely with licensees to respond to the recall, including informing customers.

Newsom announces major mental health housing expansion At the site of a new facility that will offer housing and medical services to people transitioning out of homelessness, Governor Gavin Newsom recently announced the availability of $1.1 billion to get and keep vulnerable Californians off the streets and provide them the mental health housing and treatment they need. The announcement is a critical part of the governor’s $14 billion homelessness package that will create 55,000 new housing units and treatment slots when fully implemented. “We’re taking unprecedented action to rebuild California’s mental and behavioral health infrastructure, getting folks the help they need to get out and stay out of homelessness,” said Newsom. “Up until this point, our pandemic-response homeless programs have helped provide housing and shelter to more than 58,000 Californians – we’re doubling down on these efforts, providing more services in record time and at a fraction of the price.” The announcement makes available approximately $1.1 billion in new funding through Homekey – $518.5 million for the Behavioral Health Continuum Infrastructure Program and $570 million for the Community Care Expansion Program – that local partners are encouraged to utilize as part of the state’s strategy to rebuild mental and behavioral health services and house those most in need, especially those at risk of or experiencing homelessness.
“We are systematically building the housing and treatment programs that California needs to better provide services to people with acute behavioral health issues,” said California Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly. “That is

CDFW seeks input on 2022 recreational Pacific halibut season dates California anglers who are interested in the recreational Pacific halibut fishery are invited to participate in an online survey that will help inform the California Department of Fish and Wildlife about angler preferences for open fishing dates during the upcoming 2022 season. It also offers an opportunity to provide other comments or recommendations to CDFW on Pacific halibut. Results of the survey will be used to develop recommended California season dates that will be provided to the National Marine Fisheries Service. The Pacific halibut fishery takes place off northern California and the 2022 quota will be approximately 39,000 net pounds, the same as the last three years.

Huffman, Warren press cryptomining companies on high energy use Congressman Jared Huffman (D-Calif.) joined United States Senators Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), member of the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee, Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.), and Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), and Representatives Katie Porter (D-Calif.) and Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) in sending letters to six cryptomining companies raising concerns over their extraordinarily high energy usage. In the letters to Riot Blockchain, Marathon Digital Holdings, Stronghold Digital Mining, Bitdeer, Bitfury Group, and Bit Digital, the lawmakers pressed the companies for information relating to their cryptomining operations, skyrocketing energy consumption, possible impacts on the climate and local environments, and their role in driving up electricity costs for American consumers. Bitcoin mining’s power consumption has more than tripled from 2019 to 2021, rivaling the energy consumption of Washington state, and of entire countries like Denmark, Chile, and Argentina. “Given the extraordinarily high energy usage and carbon emissions associated with Bitcoin mining, mining operations raise concerns about their impacts on the global environment, local ecosystems, and consumer electricity costs,” the members wrote in their letter. Bitcoin is the largest cryptocurrency by market cap, and the United States’ share of Bitcoin mining increased from 4% in August 2019 to 35% in July 2021. This share of mining is growing even more rapidly after China’s crackdown on cryptomining, which left 500,000 mining operations looking for new locations. This could push North America to represent over 40% of the total global computing power dedicated to mining Bitcoin. As more cryptomining operations proliferate in the United States, the extraordi-
nary energy use raises alarms about massive carbon emissions and the impacts of this energy consumption on consumer energy prices. A recent study estimated that cryptomining in upstate New York raised annual electric bills by about $165 million for small businesses and $79 million for consumers. Huffman and his colleagues asked each company to detail their electricity consumption, scaling plans, agreements with electricity companies, and impact on energy costs for consumers and small businesses by February 10.

Bob Ames, age 96, passed away surrounded by his family at home in Crescent City, California, on January 29, 2022. Bob was born, December 8, 1925, in Chowchilla, California., and grew up in Santa Cruz, California. He moved north to Crescent City, graduating from Del Norte High School. He enlisted in the Navy during WW II, serving as a salvage diver in the South Pacific, and later as an electrician during the Korean Conflict. During those years he married the love of his life, Mary Jean Johnson, in North Dakota, after meeting her while in school to become an electrician. One winter in the mid-west convinced him to return to warm California with his bride, settling in Crescent City. His beloved in-laws soon followed, which included Albert and Ella Johnson, Patricia and Don Olson, as well as Janet and Bert Ames.

Family was everything to Bob and Mary Jean. They raised four children while owning and operating the Bob Ames Company, along with his brother and parents. The tidal wave of 1964 wiped out the business but was rebuilt over the subsequent years. During that time Bob worked long, hard hours to provide for his family, but he also had fun while singing in choirs, dancing, backpacking, hunting, fishing, swimming at the family cabin that he helped build, gardening, building, and maintaining a home, serving his church, taking family vacations, and eating delicious meals. Bob volunteered with the VFW and served on the school board.
Bob dedicated his life to the Christian faith by joining the Grace Lutheran Church. He worked in many capacities while sharing his love of Jesus Christ. He had many friends in the church whom he cared about deeply. Those friends sustained him as he became less able to get out into the community.

McGuire’s bill to help stop toxic coal train overwhelmingly passes full Senate
Senator Mike McGuire’s legislation to stop one of the largest environmental threats California and the North Coast has seen in decades — a proposal from a secret, clandestine operation that wants to ship millions of tons of coal through Northern California — passed with overwhelming bipartisan support on the Senate floor recently. “The proposed toxic coal train is an environmental disaster in the making. The midwest coal would travel through the Sierras, across the Golden State through the heart of our thriving communities, ancient redwoods, and directly along the banks of the Eel and Russian
rivers, which are the main drinking water source for nearly 1 million residents. It is crucial we stop this dangerous proposal – it transcends politics, and I’m grateful for the bipartisan support.” SB 307 will protect California by preventing all state funding from initiating improvements on the now defunct North Coast rail line north of the city of Willits. Further, it bans state money from being spent on the buildout of any new potential bulk coal terminal facilities at the Port of Humboldt. The bill passed in the Senate with 33-2 bipartisan vote. The bill will now be sent on to the Assembly for its committee process.
