Beginning February 15, face coverings will no longer be required in most cases in Del Norte County. Public Health Officer Dr. Aaron Stutz told the city council of
Crescent City cases were starting to decline and he was going to align local health orders with the state orders. Earlier this week, California officials announced its order requiring face masks indoors would be lifted February 15. Stutz told the council with
the state order being lifted, local orders regarding COVID restrictions would take place. “It will be rescinded and we will revert to the rules that were in place,” Stutz told the council. “I will be modifying our own official covering orders to align with that date. That will mean
you will no longer have to wear a mask in public.” The exception will remain in healthcare facilities as well as in public transit. Stutz told the council there were 270 active cases in Del Norte County with seven COVID patients in the hospital

The Del Norte Warriors mounted an incredible comeback at Saturday’s North Coast Section Redwood Empire Division-II Dual Meet Championships, on their way to placing second. After comfortably getting the better of Windsor, 58-16, in their opening match-up, the No. 3 seed Warriors then faced off against No. 2 Casa Grande in the semifinal round and pulled out a thrilling 42-40 win. The Warriors trailed 40-18 with four matches remaining, and not only did they need to win all four of them, but they needed to win all of them by a pin. Alex Osbourne, Eric Stansbury, Andre Aflegue and Isaac Lopez all then came through with pins to secure the thrilling victory, with Osbourne winning his match in the final two seconds.
“That was probably the most exciting dual meet I have ever been a part of,” said head coach Clinton Schaad, who has been coaching for 20 years. “Everybody wrestled really well across the board.” A young Del Norte team that featured just three seniors on a roster of 15 would go on to lose 55-21 to Ukiah in the championship match, but it was another strong showing for the program against the biggest schools in the Redwood Empire. It was also the third straight NCS dual meet championships where they placed second, all three times to Ukiah. “The H-DNL does well competing with those bigger schools,” Schaad said. “We were very happy with how we wrestled. You always want more, but sometimes you’ve got to sit back and think about the accomplishment.”
The Warriors will now turn their attention to this Saturday’s H-DNL Championships, which will be held at Del Norte High School. The boys and girls tournaments will feature competitors from all nine H-DNL wrestling programs, and Schaad is expecting a competitive meet. “We’re super excited,” Schaad said. “It’s been a heck of a year for all the teams to compete, and every team has kids that can win a league title. “I think this year we’re a little more even across the board.” Despite the relative youth of many of this year’s league teams, the Del Norte coach believes the quality of high school wrestling in the area is on the rise. “I’ve been doing this for 20 years and I think the H-DNL has gotten better,” he said. “We’re getting more and more kids out of our youth programs, and our
youth programs have come a long way and are feeding the high school programs.” Weigh-ins for Saturday’s tournament will begin at 9 a.m., and the first matches will begin at 11 a.m., with the championship round expected to start around 4 p.m. Four spectators will be allowed per wrestler and the tournament will be streamed live through the Del Norte High School website. There was no official league team championship handed out last season, but Del Norte is the two-time defending boys team champion, having placed first in 2019 and 2020. The Warriors will be favorites again this week. “I think everybody would like to win it,” Schaad said. “For my guys and girls, I would like to see them go out there and wrestle to the best of their ability and go out there and give their all.”

officers willing to work in the city. The unanimous vote will set aside around $10,000 for each recruit to attend the 23-week police academy. City Manager Eric Weir said the city needs to look for a differ-

The Del Norte County Board of Supervisors agreed to consider implementing a tobacco retail license in an attempt to slow down youth vaping. Amber Wier, project director for NorCal 4 Health, asked supervisors to take the step during a regular meeting this week. Wier said she has worked in tobacco use prevention for five years. “This last year, I have had a renewed sense of urgency to deal with this issue,” Wier said. “I have it because my daughter started high school. She came home and told me what she has seen. It’s really scared me about what’s going on.” At the supervisor’s meeting, Wier brought two members of the Del Norte High School STORM Youth Coalition. She said a recent study in the county revealed 11% of seventh graders, 9% of ninth graders and 22% of 11th graders reported vaping in the last month. One teen said the STORM coalition interviewed their peers about vaping. “What stood out to me is it was the kids I wasn’t expecting who were vaping,” she said. “Addictive flavors are what encourages students to vape. Cigarettes are known as stress relievers, however due to the stigma of cigarettes, students have turned to vapes.” The student said vaping has become popular because of the fancy flavors added, pointing to cotton candy, grape and other fruit flavors. “These exotic flavors encourage students to vape more,” she said. “If you want to decrease teen vaping, we can remove the flavors.” Sienna, a sophomore at Del Norte High, said she sees vaping every day. Over time, I have tried to use the bathroom, and they have been constantly full of girls vaping. It smells disgusting,” she said. “Teens are getting these products from family members and friends who are over 21. It is passed around among students who want to vape. Basically it takes one sibling over 21 to do it and a teen becomes a dealer. We’re asking you to help us. We think the most effective thing you can do is get rid of flavors altogether.” Wier said there are already educational programs at the schools, with close to $1 million spent annually in Del Norte County alone. Cynthia Joan Brown (nee Rimac) passed away in Chicago, Illinois, at the age of 72 on October 7, 2021. Cynthia Brown was born on April 16, 1949, in Ellwood City, Pennsylvania, to Joseph and Mary Elizabeth (Badger) Rimac. She was the first of four children. Cynthia and her siblings were raised in Palo Alto, California, before moving to San Jose, California, and eventually Birmingham, Michigan. Cynthia is survived by her husband of 51 years, Edward Brown III of
Smith River, California; daughter Kristina Sullivan (Timothy) of Chicago, Illinois; sister Linda Rimac Colberg (Ronald) of Walnut Creek, California; brother Robert Rimac of Palm Springs, California; and niece Allison Colberg of Walnut Creek, California. She was predeceased by her mother Mary Elizabeth, her father Joseph Sr., and her brother, Joseph, Jr. Cynthia’s cremains were buried at Alta Mesa Memorial Park, in Palo Alto, California.

An extremely conservative approach during the COVID-19 pandemic led to a surprise increase in revenue in Crescent City. City Finance Director Linda Leaver told the city council that due to the pandemic, the staff and council put together a very conservative budget for the 2021 fiscal year. When revenue came in higher than expected, it enabled the city to replenish city reserves and has given the city an unexpected amount of money. We all know that in fiscal 21 the budget was especially challenging,” Leaver said. “The past year was much more so than usual. The budget was adopted in June 2020, which was only three months after the COVID-19 pandemic began. When the budget was adopted, the council made significant cuts due to all the uncertainty. All of this is obviously good news, and I think we’ll see better news as we see the projections finalized,” Inscore said. “We may have a very unique opportunity this year because of everything that has happened unex-
pectedly. I think we need to be very aware of those one-time opportunities and be very clear to our community that increased revenues allow us to do those things we’ve wanted to do but couldn’t get done. I think we need to seize this opportunity. I think we ought to take a stab, not waiting for a grant, but do another section on Front Street. I really believe we’re going to have an opportunity to do that level of impact this year. I’m excited about the opportunity of reinvesting in our community.” During the same meeting, the city received a clean audit for the 2021 fiscal year. Auditor Mites Desar said the audit showed the city was in good financial position. “No significant weaknesses were identified in the audit,” he said. “We don’t have any concerns about the city ongoing in the future. We don’t have any concerns about the city’s financial position.”

Letters to the Editor We’ve seen and heard a lot about growth in Humboldt County, whether it’s wind farms, fish farms or improvements to our colleges. There seems to be two sides: Bring it on! We need the local job opportunities, or: Not in my backyard; figure out another way. To those of you in the second group, there is no other way. I know this. I have lived in Eureka for 27 years. I started an apprenticeship program with Operating Engineers Local 3 in 2018, because working in the local hotel/restaurant business was putting me in poverty. But even with my training as an operating engineer, I have had to travel over four hours one way, to work in Chico or further. I had to work weeks away from home and spend my money elsewhere,
because we don’t have local jobs. Many of our young people are in the same position. There isn’t a career path for them here that will keep them local. They have to move away to support themselves or their families. If the Nordic Aquafarms project gets built on the Samoa Peninsula, it will create 300 local jobs, with thousands more just to maintain the facility. This is something that will employ our workforce, so let’s do it. We have the skilled and trained people to build and maintain that project right here, and the company plans to hire our local workforce, while doing everything to ensure the project is environmentally sound. Remember when you’d go to the fireworks displays on the fourth of July? There was always that moment of, “well, I think that was the end,” only to have them continue? Next there would be a huge bursting display. This time you were certain the display budget had been expended, only to have them continue once again. It wasn’t until that final grand flourish, the one where you thought your ears would burst, leaving no doubt this was the end that it was finally safe to walk back to your car and drive home. Regarding COVID, we’ve reached over a million cases a day, we’ll have a million deaths soon recorded and have an exposure rate of close to 90% (infection or vaccine), I’m thinking these sad facts may prove to be our not so grand finale. How close are we to completing this recent wave and is this the final wave? The primary goal of any species, be it advanced vertebrate or a virus, is survival and propagation. For a virus to survive, it needs a host which will survive long enough to infect as many people as possible. The more contagious and less dangerous a virus the better it has adapted for survival. In the case of Ebola, outbreaks don’t last long because the hosts don’t last long. The disease is so horrific that society will isolate those infected in what is the equivalent of a modern-day leper colony. Alternatively, the flu virus hits the sweet spot. It spreads widely because over 99% of those infected survive, leaving them able to infect others. It has also adapted to evading vaccines annually. COVID is evolving just this way. Over the past two years, COVID has become more contagious and less dangerous, the perfect combination for its survival as an endemic rather than pandemic species. Delta was much more contagious than the original strain but also more dangerous thus it burned out quickly. Omicron was perhaps 10 times as contagious but “milder.” Now we have the emergence of a new variant of Omicron, BA.2, which is twice as contagious as the original Omicron and no more dangerous. The Delta variant remained controllable with the original vaccines whereas Omicron (and likely this new variant) are not. Contagion, survivability and evasion. We’ve checked all the boxes for an endemic virus. Is the pandemic almost over? It
seems that we are finally headed that way. And it’s about time, the planet has a lot of healing to do. This era in human history has scarred the survivors in ways, both physically and emotionally, we couldn’t have fathomed five years ago. Most survivors of COVID have been physically damaged in some way. In some, such as a developing a new chronic pulmonary or cardiac condition, it’s obvious. In the majority though it’s subtle, and mostly undetectable. Still, there are very few who don’t notice some slight physical difference after a severe COVID infection. Aside from direct functional compromise, this pandemic and all that has been required to contain it has caused undeniable social and emotional damage, especially among the young. Humans are just another species. In some respects, we’re not much different from dogs. And like dogs we need our daily routines. Without them, we develop personality changes, behavioral issues and loss of socialization. One only needs to pick up a paper to see daily examples of this. When, pre-pandemic, do we remember reading about flight attendants being attacked? We witness repeatedly large- and small-scale battles over masks and vaccines, some leading to violence. Certainly, COVID cannot be blamed for all of this, but it has in part contributed to our country’s behavioral reset. COVID somehow became divisive, a pot to stir for many disruptive groups. The question now is, how long will it take us to reacquire our old social norms or will we? Regardless, they continue along their misguided path, not for a second thinking it might be the wrong choice. I think it must be weekly that we see an article of some high profile anti-vaxer or anti-masker succumbing to COVID, after a month of fighting for their life in some ICU, often changing their opinions in the final moments. Yet their herd, with blinders on, seem to just step over the cold, dead bodies of their prior leaders and continue along their misguided way. And this not a monochromatic group, it spans all economic groups, social classes and levels of education. Daily I witness this, I don’t get it, but I realize I have to accept it because clearly nothing is going to change it. Doc H

At a holiday market in which I participated, a customer commissioned me to make two pieces for her. She also advised me on how I should market my art. I listened patiently but had no intention of following her advice. When she came to my home to pick up the pieces, she brought three of her friends along and began advising me again. This time, she mentioned that when a person brings a group of purchasing customers (as these ladies were ... they bought nearly everything I have), I should ALWAYS offer a little “gift” to the person bringing the customers (i.e. one of my pieces as a token of gratitude). Abby, I consider what I do to be my business now. I’m not selling cosmetics or kitchenware for another company. I don’t think I have ever gone to any market with friends and asked the seller to give me a token for bringing friends who bought something. Is this what I should do? Please enlighten me. -- BUDDING ARTIST DOWN SOUTH DEAR ARTIST: Someone who helps you to increase your business should be thanked for their effort -- as long as it is you and not the other person who is deciding on what is appropriate. Whether this comes in the form of a verbal expression of gratitude or something tangible is up to you. While on one hand I think it was nervy of the woman to spring this on you, on the other I can’t help thinking that business is business -- and this is a way of promoting it. The Gallery of Arts & Culture at 175 H Street, is featuring the oil paintings of award-winning artist Daniel Desmond. While Dan and his artist wife Marianne Strehler moved to Crescent City several years ago, he has been painting with oils for over 60 years, and concentrates mostly on landscapes and seascapes. The gallery is open from 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. Tuesday - Saturday, and masks will be required inside the gallery at all times.

Dr. Ho Yi Wan is an assistant professor of spatial ecology with the Department of Wildlife at Cal-Poly Humboldt, and the director of the Spatial Ecology and Conservation Science Lab.
The Sequoia Park Zoo Conservation Lecture Series is virtual for 2021/2022 and the fourth virtual lecture is scheduled for Wednesday, February 16, at 6:45 p.m. Dr. Ho Yi Wan will be joining from the Wildlife Department at Cal-Poly Humboldt to discuss “We Are All Connected: Understanding the Importance of Connectivity Conservation and Management.” Zoo updates and information will begin at 6:45 p.m. with the lecture starting at 7 p.m. promptly. CR offers mandatory CAL FIRE Incident Safety course for hired vendors College of the Redwoods Community Education will offer an Incident Safety Awareness for Hired Vendors course this spring semester. CAL FIRE and the United States Forest Service, in partnership with College of the Redwoods Community Education are able to offer the required 2022 fire season hired equipment safety training. Bulldozer operators, water tenders, crew bus drivers, vehicle drivers, mechanics who have a CAL FIRE/USFS agreement or contract requiring annual safety training will need to take this mandatory class or they will not be eligible for contracts for the entire 2022 fire sea-
son. This class will offer hired vendors a better understanding of fire safety and give them knowledge to stay safe while fighting fires during the 2022 fire season. All class sections will take place on the CR Main Campus Performing Arts Theater. Class dates begin on Feb. 25. Understanding the connectedness among habitat remnants and how species move between them has become a major area of research. In this seminar, Dr. Ho Yi Wan will share the secret recipe for ecological connectivity models. He will demonstrate some of the latest techniques that researchers use to identify movement corridors and promote connectivity, and provide real examples on how it applies to habitat management and wildlife conservation. Dr. Ho Yi Wan is an assistant professor of spatial ecology with the Department of Wildlife at Cal-Poly Humboldt, and the director of the Spatial Ecology and Conservation
Science Lab. He has established a strong international presence through his research, leading multiple projects across four continents. His research aims to understand the drivers of change on natural resources at multiple spatial and temporal scales. Some of his current projects include development of multi-scale wildlife habitat and connectivity models, climate change scenario models, and human wildlife conflict models. Dr. Wan is also an advocate in advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion. His lab represents a microcosm of diversity and inclusion and has attracted students from an array of backgrounds.
