Council discusses options for Tsunami Landing Plaza BY ROGER GITLIN
a concrete central plaza, perimeter walls and seating and built on different levels. An overhead walking cover was removed over two decades ago. Last year, the city was awarded the Clean California grant which includes some improvements to the parking lot adjoining the plaza. Last month, the council discussed options regarding the repair of the vandalized Tsunami Memorial Fountain. Councilors directed staff to reinstall the fountain in time for the 60th anniversary of the tsunami, March of 2024. Due to its design, the city has determined the Tsunami Landing Plaza has potential to become an asset as the city seeks to incorporate this space

The Crescent City Council agreed the Tsunami Memorial Fountain and the adjoining plaza is underutilized. Changes are forthcoming. The Council is also considering an ordinance to pursue time-of-use restrictions, presently adopted for all city parks. Here’s the chronology and background of the site: The Memorial Fountain was commissioned in 1965 in memory of the 11 lives lost during the 1964 tsunami. It was placed in an area known as Tsunami Landing Plaza located on Front Street, across from Beachfront Park. The plaza and surrounding areas incorporated concrete walkways and
into the Beachfront Park and Front Street development. The city already has a tsunami walking tour with informational kiosks. After winning a first league championship in 28 years in boys soccer this fall, 10 Del Norte players have received all-league recognition, including Isidro Montanez who was named the league MVP Goalkeeper. Montanez was one of five Warriors named to the all-league first team, with five other players getting an honorable mention. Six Del Norte girls also
freshman and sophomore, returned with a bang this fall after missing his junior year through injury. But his talent between the posts was only part of what Montanez brought to this year’s team. “In addition to being a great shot stopper who commands his
area effectively, Isidro is also a candidly-outspoken team leader,” Del Norte head coach David Sanyaolu said. “His performance as part of our defensive unit this season played a large part in our achievement.” Joining the senior goalkeeper on this year’s all-league team are

Don’t wait As we enter into the holiday season, we see many addicts who wish to wait until after the holidays to seek treatment. They would like to spend time with their families and avoid missing yet another holiday. But what happens in most cases is they use more to get away from the harsh reality of their life that confronts them. They think there is no way out of the stresses of life and no way out of their addiction. The next thing they know, these anxieties push them to keep using, which could ultimately lead to an overdose and/or death. The realization that you must prioritize your needs over your wants is the most difficult aspect of entering rehab. I never wanted to become an addict when I was younger. Having a family and becoming an electrician were my goals. I got lost somewhere on that road. One pill turned into many, which turned into an endless amount, and I had no idea how to deal with my problems. One of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make in my life was to go to rehab, but it was ultimately the best one. Who knows where I could’ve ended up if I had put it off. Sincerely,

Ski bum culture hits reality

been my own obsession. I looped through mountain towns across the West, from Aspen, Colorado to Victor, Idaho and Big Sky, Montana, to assess the current state of ski bums. What I found was that everyone trying to build a life in those towns was struggling, from my old colleagues who had stuck around and wished they’d bought real estate to “lifties” fresh out of school. “A lot of people here are living a fantasy I can’t obtain,” said Malachi Artice, a 20-something skier working multiple jobs in Jackson, Wyoming. At the most basic level, the math just didn’t work. In most mountain towns, it’s now nearly impossible to work a single fulltime service job, the kind that resort towns depend on, and afford rent. The pressure shows up in nearly everything, including abysmal mental health outcomes like anxiety and depression. Ski towns have some of the highest suicide rates in the country, and social services haven’t expanded to meet demand. Racial gaps are also widening in an industry that often depends on undocumented immigrants to fill the poorly paid, but necessary, jobs it takes to keep a tourist town running. On top of all that, abundant snowfall, the basis of a ski resort’s
economy, is getting cooked by climate change. And sure, you can argue skiing is superficial and unimportant, but ski towns—some of the most elite and economically unequal places in the country—are microcosms for the way our social fabric is splitting. Ski towns face crucial, complicated questions: Can they build affordable housing and also preserve open space? What happens when healthcare workers or teachers won’t take jobs because they can’t find a way to live in the community they serve? Will a town willingly curb growth when that’s what supports the tax base? There are no easy answers because the problems are entrenched in both that slowmoving nostalgia that stymies change, and in the downhill rush of capitalism, which gives power to whoever pays the most: The housing market always tilts toward highend real estate instead of modestly priced homes for essential workers. What we value shapes our lives, and so I think we must hold the ski industry to higher standards. If these rarefied places can find ways to support working as well as leisurebased communities, they could serve as lessons for change elsewhere. During my tour, I saw necessary workers

In Alta, Utah, for instance, the arts nonprofit Alta Community Enrichment added mental health support when its employees reported an urgent need. If ski-resort towns are going to survive, the lives of their workers need to matter, and that means caring about them—from affordable housing to accessible mental health support. The candidate filing period for local office elections closed December 8. Assembly District 2 remains open for an additional week due to Incumbent Jim Wood
District 1: Darrin Short (Incumbent) is running unopposed.
District 2: Valerie Starkey (Incumbent) has filed her candidate papers, secured her signatures, and seeks her second, four-year term. Candidate Rivers Drown has also submitted his signatures and paperwork and will challenge.
District 5: Dean Wilson (Incumbent) seeks re-election after defeating Sue Masten following the passing of Bob Berkowitz. Wilson is currently serving the balance of the Berkowitz term which expires January 2, 2025. Candidates Linda Sutter and Heather Polen will challenge.

Del Norte Superior Court: Incumbent Superior Court Judge Robert Cochran will not seek re-election. The state uses a different protocol for the judicial candidate filing period. The one-week extension has already passed. The candidates for the open judicial seat are attorneys Karen Olson and Keith Morris, who will vie for the open Superior Court vacancy. Profiles for all candidates will published next week. The primary election date is Tuesday, March 5. As a full back, he was quick to forage into midfield either to launch an attack or stop the opposition’s plays before the ball got to our defensive zone.” Franklin also enjoyed a standout junior season. “Greyson’s affable and jovial personality belies the serious and risk-averse approach he takes to defending,” Sanyaolu said. “He always made sure the ball did not spend too much time in our defensive zone. He is very good at reading the game and was quick to cover for his defensive partners when they forage forward.” Hanks and Ortiz earned the all-league honors in just their sophomore seasons. “As a sophomore, Deken made great improvement from where he was last season,” the coach said. “He has leveraged his strength — his great speed — to good effect as an

The continued delay is based on a combination of excessive humpback whale entanglements in California Dungeness crab gear over the last three years and high numbers of recent humpback whale sightings off the Central Coast, according to the Risk Assessment and Mitigation Program criteria. The recreational fishery opened on November 4 with hoop nets, and the recreational crab trap prohibition was lifted for Fishing zone 1—the northern most California waters.
Recreational crab traps are still prohibited off Zones 3 and 4, off the Central Coast. According to the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), roughly 75 percent of reported whale entanglements are fatal as whales can drag the heavy fishing gear for months, hindering their ability to dive and feed. This can result in malnutrition, starvation, infection to damaged flukes or tails and even severed appendages and drowning. According to CDFW, there have been 16 confirmed whale entanglements — including humpback whales and gray whales — reported off California this year, four of which were confirmed in California commercial Dungeness
crab gear. This includes a recent sighting of another humpback whale reported entangled on November 11 in Monterey Bay and confirmed to be in California commercial Dungeness crab gear. To date, at least 24 whales have been confirmed entangled off the West Coast in 2023. The population of humpback whales that breeds in Central American/Southern Mexico — one of two humpback populations that migrates to feed off the California coast — is endangered with extinction under the federal Endangered Species Act. According to NMFS, these humpbacks are being seriously injured or killed at a rate of four times their “Potential Biological

The federal agency is also considering including the Dungeness crab fishery in the scope of a new “Take Reduction Team” that would develop a plan to swiftly reduce serious injury and death of whales from entanglement as required by the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Pop-up gear is a successful way to catch crab in a way that is whale and sea turtle safe. The gear stores the rope and buoy with a string of traps connected by a groundline on the seafloor until fishermen are ready to retrieve the gear. This removes the entanglement risk posed by conventional gear where vertical fishing lines lay stagnant in the
water for up to four days. Last spring, fishermen were successful in testing hundreds of trials of Sub Sea Sonics pop-up systems under experimental fishing permits. A larger, commercial scale testing is planned for Spring 2024 to enable authorization of the gear as alternative gear by 2025. We commend the fishermen, enforcement officers, gear manufacturers, and fishery managers who are collaborating to pioneer the development of this innovative gear to expand whale-safe fishing opportunities during the spring season.
