The Del Norte County Board of Supervisors received input from the public and provided a sense of their own preference of redistricting options proposed by the Advi-
sory Redistricting Commission. The four draft maps - of which one must be approved by December 15 - show different district boundaries based on the 2020 Census. The supervisors discussed the possibility of eliminating two of
the four options during its meeting Nov. 9, but changed course to allow for additional public comment to occur at their December 14 meeting, and possibly schedule an additional workshop in either late November or early December. “I would mention that if there
are concerns being presented by some of our sovereign nations in our backyard here, then I’d be a little bit more proactive and try to reach out to try to engage them,” said Supervisor Darrin Short. Assistant County Counsel Autumn Luna began the discus-
sion by pointing out that though redistricting is mandated every 10 years, the county’s boundaries weren’t really changed in 2010, and “haven’t changed in 20 years, maybe longer,” she said. Please see REDISTRICTING, Page A9

Guy and Alice Towers, the founders of the Saint George Reef Lighthouse Preservation Society, received a proclamation from the Del Norte County Board of Supervisors on Nov. 9. The Saint George Lighthouse is located six miles off the coast
of Crescent City and was built as a result of the sinking of the coastal steamer Brother Jonathan in July 1865, resulting in the death of several hundred. According to the proclamation, both Guy and Alice have worked towards the preservation of the lighthouse for 35 years and helped with the nomination of the lighthouse to the National
Registrar of Historic Places. Guy, with the help of his wife Alice, also published a book in 2015 about the history and preservation efforts titled ‘Saint George Reef Lighthouse - Images of America.’ “That lighthouse is extremely important and has historical and spiritual significance,” said Guy Towers. He then turned to mem-
bers of the preservation society and his wife, thanking them for their support. “I want to thank my wife,” Guy Towers said. “I told her I would not accept an honor without her because I never could have done this without her, and her thousands of hours of sitting at fundraisers, dinners with the group, and on and on.”
The Crescent City Farmers Market will remain at the harbor but will be moving indoors after having been put on a temporary hold. The market will now operate out of the former Englund Marine and Industrial Supply building where Citizens Dock Road and Starfish Way meet. Vendors will start selling their products again this Saturday, Nov. 13, from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. The Board of Harbor Commissioners approved the temporary use of the building until December 31, at a flat rate of $50 to Rural Human Services, which operates the market, plus a power fee. “I don’t think there’s any way we are going to make money, I think we’re going to lose money, but I’m going to vote yes because I think it’s a public service we should provide,” said Commissioner Wes White. According to Angel Hanson, the farmer’s market manager and director, there will be 15 vendors setting up inside the building, and one outdoors that has a mobile unit. Please see MARKET, Page A2
Counties looking at how to handle outbursts By Diana Bosetti The Triplicate
Whether it’s podiums being thrown at open meetings in Southern California or verbal confrontations in rural communities, the California State Association of Counties is wondering what to do about it. That’s according to the Del Norte County Board of Supervisors Chair Chris Howard, who informed the board Nov. 9 that he attended a recent meeting of CSAC to discuss the issue. “There’s been a lot of unrest in the state and a lot of political division - not only party division, but just a preference on where you want to be politically,” Howard said. Howard added it was an interesting discussion because it all rests around issues of the First Amendment and free speech, “so the CSAC body is trying to slowly walk into the discussion of this and how it may or may not influence legislation in the future that addresses some of these concerns in this day of political discourse.” Please see OUTBURSTS, Page A2

OBITUARIES Tony Ray Sanderson
On November 3rd, 2021, Tony Ray Sanderson passed on to his next journey peacefully at his home of 24 years next to the ones he loved. Tony was an amazing father, grandfather, son, brother, cousin, and friend- he was loved by many and had a community full of friends and neighbors that adored him. Tony was a very solid, brave, loyal, honest, truthful man; if he said he was going to do something, he surely would. He was honest in all he did in life- strong, courageous, and never let anyone down. Tony raised two beautiful daughters, (Teal Dawn and Brook Lynn), and a wonderful step-daughter (Raven Marie). Tony was their backbone. He was a loving grandfather to Brysen Everett Ray Moody who was named after his grandfather; Tony who really looked forward to meeting his newest grandchild, Raelynn will also have a name sake with

his very first granddaughter. He was the best papa around and was always passionate about being a part of their lives as well as passing on his knowledge. Fishing, clamming, gold panning, gold dredging, hunting, gathering, you name it, he did it! His knowledge of the plants, trees, animals, mushrooms, the forest and mountains he roamed his whole life was wise beyond measure. Tony was a very well-respected man, he spent his life working hard as a logger, timber faller, heavy equipment operator, guide fishing service, commercial fisherman and his most important job as a loving father. He had a small number of close friends and was a very simple man. He spent a large amount of time at the beach with his dog (Baby Girl) and was never spotted without that dog by his side; she was a very special companion to him in his later parts of his life. Tony was a good man to all and will be missed deeply. Tony is preceded in death by, his mother (June Francis Tehan), his father (Donald Ray Short), his step-fathers (Georgie Maciel, and Neil Sanderson), his Granddad (Harry Tehan), his cousin (Michael Tehan) and numerous friends that held
a special spot in his heart. It is with peace that we know he has reunited with those amazing souls once again. Tony is survived by his daughters, Teal Dawn Sanderson, Brook Lynn Sanderson, and Raven Marie Sanderson- his Grandson, Brysen Everett Ray Moody, and unborn granddaughter Raelynn White. His dog, Baby Girl, His Sisters, Robin Sanderson Cypret, Jackie Sanderson, and Jennifer Sanderson Brocato, His very special cousin and best friend Jeff Tehan, as well as his uncle Donald Tehan. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews as well as great nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be held in Rio Dell California at the Rio Dell Baptist church conducted by his family November 12th at 3PM. Memorial Services will be held in Klamath California at The County Club November 13th at 1pm, potluck style. Tony will be missed dearly and forever in our hearts. Robert (Bob) James was born August 16, 1961, in Crescent City, California. He moved to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho in 1986. Bob went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on November 2, 2021, surrounded by family and friends. Growing up he had a love and passion for the great outdoors. He was born to hunt and fish. He enjoyed the hunting trips with his dad, family, and friends. In addition to hunting, he had a passion for fishing on clear running waters. No matter the subject, Bob always had a story to tell. Whether hunting or fishing, carpentry or life, he could tell stories like no one else with his attention to detail and his animated nature. When Bob told a story, people wanted to listen. Bob worked in
many occupations with much success. He was a skilled logger for many years. Later, he became a master craftsman. The pride he took in his work was evident. Bob had a positive influence on everyone he met. There were few who came in contact with him that didn’t learn something from him. He had a way of touching someone’s heart with an everlasting impression. Bob was a faithful follower of Jesus Christ. His faith was infectious. He spurred others on in their walk with Christ. One of his last words to everyone was “keep the faith“. Family was very important to him; he loved his family. Bob is preceded in death by his parents, Stan and Dorothy Nuszkiewicz, brother Gerald (Jerry) Nuszkiewicz, and his wife, Jan Nuszkiewicz. He is survived by his sons Christopher (Chris) and Anthony (Tony) Nuszkiewicz, daughters Jody Teter, Lynn Morrow, and Jenny Smith, grandchildren Lacey Easton, Kylea Smith,
Jadyn Smith, Kenza Smith, Ashlyn Morrow, Zeke Nuszkiewicz, Zoey Nuszkiewicz, and Carter Nuszkiewicz, and great grandchildren Kaedyn Schifano and Kashtyn Schifano. In the past month, some residents in Del Norte and Curry counties have yelled out from their seats or while standing at the podium during open meetings, slammed doors when leaving meeting halls and a security guard was asked to escort one attendee from last week’s Crescent City Board of Harbor Commissioners meeting after referring to the board as “evil.” “Fortunately for us in Del Norte County we don’t see a lot of that - people still get along here,” said Howard. “It’s because we are a small town and we are neighbors. But, it’s not always like that in big cities. Hopefully, we can continue to act fairly and civilly with each other.”

Ryan Cooley was appointed director of the Del Norte County Regional Airport at Jack McNamara Field. Cooley will start the position Nov. 22, and is moving to the area from Klamath Falls, where he most recently worked as a certified airport operations specialist for the city of Klamath Falls at the Crater Lake - Klamath Regional Airport. Cooley could not be reached for comment, but according to the application he submitted for the position he is “interested in assisting Del Norte County with land use decisions around the county’s airports in order to ensure compatibility between aviation and land development.” Cooley was appointed by the Border Coast Regional Airport Authority Board of Commissioners in a unanimous vote on Nov. 4 and was also appointed to the Del Norte
County Airport Land Use Commission. During the same meeting, commissioners voted to not apply for grants in 2022 - opting instead to allow “the new airport director to settle into the position more confidently with funding already secured for several projects,” according to staff reports. The commission also received documentation about recent and ongoing projects, which will be forwarded to the Federal Aviation Administration - an entity that requires reports about projects at least two times a year. The 2022-2028 fiscal year Jack McNamara Field Airport Capital Improvement Plan includes the recently completed terminal and access road, as well as an $8 million runway rehabilitation project that’s currently in the design stage and is slated to begin construction in 2023. There was no discussion from the public or commission about the items on agenda, and the meeting lasted about 15 minutes.

OBITUARIES Pamela Lee (Moore) Gillespie May 11, 1955 – October 20, 2021
It is with great sorrow that we announce the unexpected passing of Pamela Lee (Moore) Gillespie, who slipped away from us way too soon on October 20, 2021. She was 66 years old. Pamela was born on May 11, 1955 in Crescent City, CA to Robert and Eva Moore and was one of five siblings. She attended St. Joseph’s Catholic School, Del Norte High School, and later earned her Associates degree at College of the Redwoods in Crescent City. Pamela met the love of her life, Gary Gillespie, in high school and they married at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in May of 1974. Gary and Pam later welcomed their two children, Scott and Lindsay. Pamela held several work positions in the community over the years but her true passion and proudest accomplishment was that of a doting wife, mother, and grandmother. Her family was the center of her universe and she selflessly lived her life caring for others. She
carried herself with grace, compassion, faith, intellect, and unconditional love. A natural beauty with a pure heart of gold. She was the mother that everyone dreamed of having and was always the last to sit down at the dinner table, ensuring every single person had everything they needed. She was the mother that never missed her children’s activities and sporting events, hosted countless birthday and slumber parties, and always packed a nutritional lunch. She would pick blackberries and apples in the backyard for hours in order to make the perfect pie, hung all the laundry on the line to dry, had dinner on the table every night, and always walked us out to our vehicles and waved as we drove away. She loved Hallmark movies, pretty Christmas cards, traveling to new places, a great bargain, and shopping for her grandchildren. In her later years Pamela spent much time with her family on the Chetco River in Brookings, OR, one of her favorite places, and devoted herself to spending as much time as possible with her precious granddaughters whom she absolutely adored. We are grateful that she was able to spend the last few weekends of her life with her family, making new memories that

Paula Jo Miller will remain in our hearts and minds forever. Paula Jo (Douglass) Miller passed away on November 4, 2021 at the age of 75. She left our world surrounded by the love of family. Paula was born on February 9, 1946 in Cottage Grove, Oregon. Paula was the only child born to her parents Paul H. Douglass and Evelyn VeatchDouglass. Their family of three moved to Crescent City, CA in 1950, when Paula’s Father Paul became a business partner with Warren Barnts in the Del Norte Tire Service. Paula and her husband Dale A. Miller were married
for 55 years. They met as classmates in the first grade at Crescent Elk Elementary School and graduated together from Del Norte High in 1964. It wouldn’t be until later that Paula and Dale would go on their first date to a Merv George dance in Arcata, CA where they danced all night. Dale said, “I never imagined a date could be so much fun and I was waiting on Paula’s doorstep the next morning.” They were married a few months later before Dale went to Vietnam. Paula and Dale are still known for their dancing together as one. Paula magically mastered being a devoted wife, loving mother and worked full time until she retired as Manager of the Del Norte County Fair. Closest to Paula’s heart and soul was spending time with her family. Music brought her joy and playing poker was her passion. Paula had a fierce mind,
swift wit and gentle nature. Paula is survived by husband Dale Miller; daughter Kim Krokodilos and husband Peter of Crescent City; son Vincent Miller and Jenn of Elko, Nevada; daughter Kathryn Williams and husband J.R. of Vancouver, Washington; grandchildren Josh Williams and Mary of West Linn, Oregon; Kelsea Williams and Jack of Vancouver, Washington; Brittany Emerson of Crescent City; great-grandchildren Jazmyne Harding-Williams, Nicholas Kingsley Williams, Piper Scout Williams, Madeline and Maddison. Local journalism needs federal support Juan-Carlos Molleda
The fate of local news in America may depend on what Oregon’s senior Senator Ron Wyden, does in the next few days. In addition to all the other major tax issues that have fallen to the Senate Finance Committee, which Wyden chairs, the panel is also considering a less expensive but hugely important provision: a payroll tax credit to help local newspapers, TV and radio stations and websites to hire and retain local reporters. This is essential because local news is collapsing around the country. Because the internet has destroyed local news business models, there has been a 60 percent drop in the number of reporters since 2000. Thousands of communities have no newspapers or “ghost newspapers” that barely cover communities. Studies have proved what we know intuitively: when there are fewer local reporters, there’s more government waste, corruption. Just as important, it’s harder for neighbors to know each
other and for communities to solve their own problems. Voting goes down. Participation goes down. The information vacuums are filled with misinformation and conspiracy. As the Edwin L. Artzt dean and professor at the University of Oregon’s School of Journalism and Communication, I have a front row seat for the monumental changes in local journalism. We send interns into Oregon newsrooms every summer and many of our graduates are employed in local print, broadcast and internet newsrooms. The COVID-19 pandemic, and resulting advertising losses, only exacerbated economic fissures threatening the flow of information to citizens. Fortunately, Congress is right now considering a simple proposal that could save local news. It provides a tax credit to publishers and stations to help pay the salary of a local reporter. It would infuse $38 million over five years to approximately 113 newsrooms in Oregon. No one loves the idea of news organizations getting
money from the government. But this particular idea is constructed in a clever, First Amendment friendly approach. All news organizations — regardless of ideology — would be eligible for the tax credit as long as they have local reporters. There’s no government bureaucrat deciding what news organizations benefit. That’s why it has strong bipartisan support: the original co-author is Rep. Dan Newhouse, a Republican, from Washington state. This provision is on the edge of being included in the Build Back Better legislation. Because it’s a tax credit, its fate will be decided by the Senate Finance Committee. Senator Wyden is already a co-sponsor of the bill. He is in a unique position to make it become law. It’s a small amount of money compared to the $1.75 trillion bill but it’s impact on saving democracy may be profound. Molleda is a tenured professor and the Edwin L. Artzt Dean of the School of Journalism and Communication at the University of Oregon.

His addiction has gotten worse over the last year and it is really bad now. He shows up at my home at all times of the night, sleeps on my porch and leaves wet, dirty clothes behind. He comes over high on heroin, nods out and acts very strange. I feed him, let him shower and even buy him clothes from the resale shops, but I need this all to STOP. He continually needs something -money for cigarettes, a ride to here or there, clothes. I am a 65-year-old semi-retired man and I do not want or need a homeless heroin addict in my life in my remaining days on this planet. I have tried repeatedly to end this “friendship,” but he doesn’t have anyone. When I tell him to leave me alone, he breaks down and cries. It breaks my heart. When we first met, he was a happy, friendly, handsome person, but now it’s horrible. He’s sickly and looks bad. I have even considered selling my home and moving. What can I do to finally get rid of this guy for good? -- DESPERATE IN FLORIDA DEAR DESPERATE: By now you should have realized that you can’t fix what’s wrong with this person. In fact, you have become his enabler. Tell him you have done everything you can, but it hasn’t helped him straighten his life around. Offer to help him find a drug rehabilitation program. Then tell him that until he demonstrates a willingness to help himself, you do not want to see him again. If he shows up stoned after that, rather than give him showers, money and clothing, call the police and have him removed
from your property. DEAR ABBY: Two months ago, I started dating a man I’ll call “Hugh” after a mutual friend of a friend introduced us. He is retired, and I still work. Hugh is very sociable and friendly, and drinks much more than I do. His friends are great. One particular single friend, “Terry,” is my age, and we have similar interests. I haven’t been intimate with Hugh because I’m not particularly attracted to him. I also don’t think Hugh is all that interested because we don’t get together too often, although he calls daily for a minute or two to check in. He wants a relationship, but I don’t feel it. I’m starting to think Hugh is looking more for a friend with benefits. I would prefer to remain just friends. I also want to be able to further a relationship with Terry, who has a lot more in common with me. How do I do it tactfully? Hugh has been nice to me, but, like I said, I feel no romantic connection. Let him know you see others and hope that he does, too. Throw a party and invite a group of friends, including Terry. If Terry shows any interest in you, respond accordingly. A community of river guides copes with loss By Rebecca Lawton The Grand Canyon boating community — devoted to each other and to the Colorado River — was shocked to learn this fall that we’d lost two of our own. Former river guides and rangers Mark O’Neill, 67, of Chimacum, Washington, and Kim Crumbo, 74, of Odgen, Utah, didn’t return home from a Sept. 13-17 canoe-packing trip in Yellowstone National Park. Then on Sept. 20, Mark’s body and the boat were found on the shore of Shoshone Lake. He’d succumbed to hypothermia. Kim remains missing. We who guided in the canyon with both men, sharing our intimate knowledge of the place with thousands of visitors, have spent many hours trying to make sense of the loss. “Damn it,” a fellow canyon guide, Jeffe Aronson, wrote me. “We live and love in a world of ghosts.” One way we’re coping with grief is to share stories. Both men began guiding in the 1970s, going on to rack up some of the most extensive experience anyone can acquire. In the 1980s, both worked in the canyon as National Park Service river rangers. Mark had already been a waterman all his life as surfer, lifeguard, skipper — basically “all things water,” says his sister, Toni Kelly, a former Green and Colorado River guide and ranger. Kim Crumbo (“Crumbo” to most) served two tours in Vietnam as a Navy SEAL. By spring 1971, he was home running rivers in Utah, a place, he once told me, he had wondered if he’d live to see again. When I asked how he’d survived two tours, the second with a platoon known for the highest casualty rates in SEAL history, he shrugged. “I had to become the scariest guy out there.” “He’s tough,” my fellow Park Service river ranger, RuthAnn Stoner, said of Crumbo. “The toughest person I’ve ever met.” RuthAnn and river ranger Kim Johnson remember Crumbo’s persistence on a Grand Canyon patrol where they found an injured peregrine falcon around River Mile 140. At the time, peregrine falcons were listed as endangered, with less than 30 breeding sites in the canyon. The birds were just emerging from decline throughout Arizona and the West. Crumbo offered to do as he’d done before — row his boat 26 miles downstream to Havasu Creek, hike out to Havasupai Village and call for a helicopter evacuation. But River Unit Supervisor Curt Sauer was already on inner-canyon patrol with a Park Service helicopter pilot, and when they saw a mirror signal they landed. After a heated back-and-forth, with Crumbo insisting that the falcon — starving, its wing broken — had to be “evacuated now,” Crumbo prevailed. The falcon got its ride out, wearing a bandanna hood to keep it calm. Later, Curt helped release the rehabilitated bird back into the wild, calling it
Rebecca Lawton a triumph that “wouldn’t have happened without Crumbo.” “Crumbo just never gave up,” as RuthAnn Stoner tells it. “That same season he was jumping out of helicopters to rescue people off the rocks below Crystal Rapids after one of the big rigs flipped.” Rescues like that were all in a day’s work for both brothers. Mark’s outstanding swiftwater rescue skills earned him awards for “courageous and professional” recovery efforts on flooding rivers and in remote forests. After leaving Grand Canyon, he continued his Park Service career in Olympic National Park, where he served 20 years until retiring in 2016. Crumbo, too, dedicated 20 years to conservation work with the Park Service, then gave another 20 years to wilderness advocacy through the Rewilding Institute, Wildlands Network and other organizations, retiring in 2019. He also become known for his well-argued essays about climate resilience, the latest titled, “Hope in the Age of Humans.” While many of us have found it unfathomable that a lake could make ghosts of such men, consider the lake — 12 square miles of icy, unpredictable mountain water. At the time Mark and Kim were out on it, an early snowstorm blew in on 45-mph winds, causing Shoshone Lake to surge with waves at least 2 feet high. Any boater, regardless of experience, would have survived a capsize in Shoshone’s 48-degree F water for only 20 to 30 minutes. These “two good men,” as Curt Sauer describes them, gave their best to their families, the canyon and humanity. “Any stories we tell about them,” he says, “are love stories, pure and simple.” Becca Lawton is a contributor to Writers on the Range, writersontherange.org, an independent nonprofit dedicated to spurring lively conversation about the West. However, many of the supervisors and members of the public who spoke at the meeting seemed to want to continue the minimal change trend by choosing to go with map one. “My preference is map one,” said Supervisor Valerie Starkey, “because it is the most consistent with the current districts and I like that consistency.” “I agree with Supervisor Starkey,” said Supervisor Bob Berkowitz. “This looks like the least change and yet it has a very good impact.” “I have nothing to add to that, I couldn’t agree more,” added Supervisor Darrin Short. “It seems like the most common-sense option for us.” At which point Luna cautioned supervisors to keep in mind one of the election code requirements. “If I may, I will bring up one criteria under 21500 of the Elections Code that has to do with keeping incorporated areas together, if possible,” Luna said. “So, you’ll notice that the other three maps actually do that, necessitating some larger changes elsewhere, but I do think that’s something that should be considered and discussed moving forward.” The fours maps include three options, though the second option has different variables. In summary, and according to staff reports, they include: ● Alternative One: This is the draft map that most closely adheres to the current supervisorial districts. Kevin Hendrick, who is chair of the Del Norte Democratic Central Committee (DNDCC) and served as director of the Del Norte Solid Waste Management Authority for about 20 years, endorsed the first map, though he expressed “grave” concern about each of the maps because they would move him from the fifth to the fourth district - eliminating his eligibility on the DNDCC. Supervisor Gerry Hemmingsen, who represents the 4th District, had a similar concern about the first map. “That particular map would district me out of my district,” he said. “I would no longer be in district four. So, that’s why I was looking to try to get rid of that, but that was just a personal thing.”
“I think we addressed this once, though it was many, many months ago,” responded Luna. “If somebody gets redistricted out of their district, at least at the board of supervisors level, you finish out your term and then you run again in whatever district you’re in.” Hemmingsen pointed out that he is on a different term cycle than Supervisor Starkey, who he may have to run against if map one is adopted. “So, if I was to run again, I wouldn’t be able to run for another two years,” Hemmingsen said. “The truth is, people get redistricted out of their districts,” responded Luna. “It’s not something that legally we say to consider whether somebody is being redistricted out of their district.” Later in the discussion and just prior to moving onto the next item on the agenda, Starkey also pointed out that one of the election codes states: “Communities of interest do not include relationships with political parties, incumbents or for the candidates,” she said. “So, even though he brings up that point, that’s not a consideration.” “She’s trying to push me out,” responded Hemmingsen with a laugh. “I would say that having one person pushed out is not an example of gerrymandering,” responded Luna.

During that same August meeting, some of the Bayside and Redwood RV park residents expressed concern about possible displacement. “Mr. Lemus, you’ve already stated that you want all or nothing for the harbor lease, and you still just want the lease for the small overflow property, is that correct?” Leonard Franklin asked. “I don’t believe I said that, but that is our goal,” Lemus responded. “I’m absolutely sure you did, I have it in my notes,” Franklin responded. “Do you have information that you were going to get these leases from information not discussed in the public meeting?” Lemus attempted to answer, but Franklin interjected with “Alex, have you seen how unethically these evil people in front of me have treated us?” asked Franklin, referring to the commissioners. “Ok, you are going to get kicked out if you continue,” responded Brian Stone, president of the harbor commission. Franklin said down, but he and Stone continued to talk back and forth, leading Stone to request the security officer already at the meeting to escort Franklin outside. Following a short recess, local resident Annie Nehmer stood up and asked about the same issue. “Alex did discuss the last time I heard him that he would not be able to move forward on the small RV lease unless the other two leases were part of it,” Nehmer said. “So, from the outside looking in, it does appear there’s been a sidebar.” CEO/Harbormaster of the Crescent City Harbor District Timothy Petrick clarified that the item before the board had only to do with the vacant overflow lot, adding that Lemus has a “reasonable expectation that he will have more lease area in the harbor district” due to the request for proposal process and discussions that began in December 2020. Petrick added that lease negotiations - while not open to the public - are forwarded to the harbor commission four days prior to a meeting in the form of an agenda item that includes publicly- released staff documentation.

“I’d like to clarify for the public that one - nothing has been done behind the public’s back,” Stone said. “Two - we have gone through, for the last five years that I have been on this board, we have gone through a master plan, and gone through the redevelopment, finding our development partners, a coastal planning process and we have gone through all these different things with workshops for everyone to see.” According to the Nov. 2 meeting staff report, the project in the overflow lot includes creating 14 spaces for RV parking, landscaping, trenching, grading patios and fences. Once developed, it is anticipated that the tourism destination will bring in $4,163 a month, or $49,956 annually to the port. “With all the issues to be determined with Bayside and Redwood (the two RV parks that sit nearby), I did listen to the commissioners and decided to use the existing Redwood overflow lot,” Lemus said. “Our goal is to increase revenue because the harbor has suffered chronic losses.” Lemus added that “we are going to start with this one first and show the commissioners and the community what our intentions are,” he said. “We intend to invest a fair amount of money and we’re willing to take on all of the risks.” There is a possibility that the project will include a small retail store for snacks and gift items, but if that should exceed $10,000 as an improvement or alteration, it will need to go back before the commission for approval. Lemus also stated that new public restrooms will be included in the development. Prior to taking the vote, modifications were made to the proposed lease terms that included shortening the lease from 25 years to 15 years with options to extend, and adjustments to future rent payments will depend on the cost of living index and will range from two to five percent, instead of a fixed rate of two percent. Construction is not expected to begin for several months, due to soil testing requirements prior to breaking ground, according to Petrick. Lemus added that he hopes to include more solar panels as part of the development. Commissioner Harry Adams was the only no vote for the project. “I’m totally against the whole project,” he said. “We don’t need another RV park in the harbor. The harbor is doing pretty good financially, and I don’t think a 14-space, high-rated RV park is gonna help us that much.”

College of the Redwoods presents art faculty, staff Exhibition The College of the Redwoods Creative Arts Gallery presents the 2021 Art Faculty & Staff Exhibition. The exhibition will be on display from Nov. 18 to Jan. 21, 2022. There will be a live Zoom discussion with artists on November 18 from 5-6:30 p.m. Registration is required for this free public event. Participating artists include Shannon Sullivan, Cynthia Hooper, Dean Smith, David Wilson, Ben Funke, L. L. Kessner, Mina Cohen, Mary Mallahan, Laura Meglemre and James Adam Taylor. Works on display include painting, sculpture, mixed media, digital media, watercolor, ceramic, photography, fiber arts and video. The 2021 Art Faculty & Staff Exhibition showcases the work of CR’s Art Department faculty and staff, with a focus on novel process and experimentation, as well as varied personal, metaphorical, and ecological themes. Exhibited artworks include updates from ongoing projects, explorations into mediums both familiar and exploratory, and works reflecting the realities of post-pandemic life. New works include a series of experimental watercolors by Professor Shannon Sullivan, representing a departure from her traditional use of ceramics and 3D con-
structions. Sullivan’s new watercolor on paper works emerged after a residency at Dorland Artist Colony in 2020. The medium has proven a vital practice for Sullivan and allowed her to stay engaged in artmaking during the past year. Professor Cynthia Hooper is exhibiting a short documentary video from her forthcoming Anadromous Architectures project—an interdisciplinary project about Chinook salmon in California’s Central Valley. The project describes the fragmented river systems and concerted recovery efforts now underway for this iconic and imperiled species. Her video “Spring Run” (one of three in the project) describes one particularly endangered Chinook’s remaining habitat—including the San Joaquin River and the Sacramento Valley’s Butte Creek—from the perspective of the human populations who also live, work, and play there. Other exhibited works include mixed media and collage work by Mina Cohen and L.L. Kessner, photography by David Wilson, and figurative drawings by Dean Smith. Over the last year, Mina Cohen revisited older work and encaustic medium to produce new pieces reflecting the state of the world and the possibility to begin anew. Photographer David Wilson has
long been captivated by the beauty of darkness, and the variability of light captured under Humboldt County’s nocturnal conditions. Dean Smith’s pastel works reflect the current realities of life drawing, particularly, that masks must be worn by otherwise nude figures. L.L. Kessner presents a new body of mixed media that explores ideas associated with space, biography, mythology, and other themes. Division secretary Laura Meglemre and interim gallerist James Adam Taylor make their CR gallery debuts and instructors Ben Funke and Mary Mallahan present new two- and three-dimensional works.
