Ried Powell was inspired by Evangelist Franklin Graham’s idea of leading thousands of Christians in a prayer march around Washington, D.C., March 26. As associate pastor at Four Square Church, Powell wanted to ensure a similar event in Crescent City on the same day was was broad enough to make sure it didn’t matter whether participants were Republican or Democrat, only that they felt

comfortable coming to pray for the country. “The purpose of the event is simply to pray for our country, pray for our leaders and elected officials,” Powell said. “In the bible, it talks about no matter who is in charge, we’re supposed to be praying for them. When a lot of people are unsure what to do, we can all agree on prayer.” Powell put the word out on the Four Square’s Facebook page and then he invited everyone on his contact list to come pray with them. “We thought we might get

anywhere between 10 to 30 people,” Powell said. “We hope Christians feel united knowing there are a lot of things people are divided on right now. We want them to feel like there is more that unites us than divides us.” Officials lost count after 80. One person was overheard asking which churches showed up. Another answered, “I think all of them.” Leaders and representatives attended from several area churches, including Crescent City First

Baptist, Grace Lutheran Church, Smith River Baptist, Hiouchi Fellowship, New Life Community Church, United Methodist Church, Crescent City Church of Nazarene, Home Church, Solid Rock Christian Fellowship, Fort Dick Bible and Gasquet Fellowship. Powell kicked off the march, with a prayer, at Beach Front Park. The procession then made its way up H Street, most in quiet prayer and contemplation, others in joyful song. They made stops along the way for group prayers outside the Del Norte Superior

Court, the Crescent City Police Station, the United Methodist Church and the Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office, each with a different guest speaker. Blake Inscore was the final speaker when the group made its way back to Beach Front Park. Don Nuss has always had a need for speed. As a youth, he raced hot rods illegally. As an adult, he legally drag raced until 1990, his dragster reaching 170 mph on the quarter-mile course. It was still not enough. Then in 1992, a friend invited him to the salt flats of Utah where streamliners were going nearly half the speed of sound. He was hooked. By 1999 he built his own streamliner with only one purpose in mind. “It’s built to go fast,” Nuss said. Seated in what he calls a fuselage without the wings, his “Fast Ford” achieved a top speed of 337 mph over the five-mile

course at the Bonneville Salt Flats. Now 80 and retired from competitive racing, Nuss, the owner of Redwood Welding Service in Crescent City, is hoping his streamliner turns heads as it sits still at the 29th Annual Sea Cruise Oct. 9-10. “People usually have never seen one before. They usually ask lots of questions,” Nuss said. He’s also bringing along another rarity in which he’s half owner — a 1936 Harley Davidson Knucklehead. “A friend in 2006 asked if I’d ever been to Bonneville. He was a motorcycle guy. We got to talkin’ and the next day we built us a motorcycle,” Nuss said. Nuss is one of 80 classic vehicle owners registered for the Sea Cruise, according to Jason Bartholomew, president of event co-sponsors Northern Knights

Car Club. “It’s a little lower than we would like,” Bartholomew said. “We generally get 100-200 registrants by the day of the event. A lot of them hold out for the weather, see what it’s going to be like.” That’s why registration is allowed up until the day of the show. Registration for the Friday night Rolling Car Museum portion of the festivities is $10 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Northern Nights new headquarters at 840 H Street. The Shine and Shine is from 4-6 p.m. with cars socially distanced along 3rd Street, allowing visitors to gawk at the vehicles. The Sanctioned Cruise kicks off at 6 p.m. with participants parading their vehicles through other parts of downtown. The Outdoor Car Museum is Oct. 10 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Bartholomew said registration is

$55 the day of the event to get a spot stretched along Beach Front Park. Judging of the entrants is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with the award ceremony to follow. In between there will be music, raffles, food and vendors. Although registration numbers are down as of Sept. 30, Bartholomew said he has a feeling this year’s Sea Cruise could be something special. “We’ve had more inquiries than the last couple years because everything else has been cancelled,” he said, pointing to the state’s restriction’s on public events due to the pandemic. “Also, we moved it to the three-day weekend so people can stay a little longer. I’ve got a gut feeling — people have been trapped in their homes for three months. This will be a great

City seeks final input on Beachfront Park options By David Hayes The Triplicate

After six months on the back burner due to the pandemic, Crescent City staff are ready to pursue the next round of state dollars to expand Beachfront Park and they want the community’s input. To get a piece of the $395 million available in Proposition 68 grants for park projects, Crescent City must first complete its master plan for Beachfront Park. Voters approved Proposition 68 — the Park, Environment and Water Bond — in June 2018, which allocated $4 billion in

general obligation bonds for park, environmental, water infrastructure and flood protection projects. “We were set and primed to have this Beachfront Park master plan update starting in March of this year,” City Manager Eric Wier told the City Council Sept. 21. “Unfortunately this year didn’t go as planned. COVID hit right about the same time and turned everything upside down for the city including a lot of projects we had underway at that point.” For the first phase in updating its master plan, the city sought recommendations from

the community last September for a non-competitive $200,000 Proposition 68 grant. Atop the list from those meetings were a labyrinth, bike pump track, expansion of Kidtown and a Bankshot Basketball course. The next phase was hiring Bay Area landscape architect PGAdesign to develop the public’s ideas into a finalized master plan. Wier said the original plan was to have PGAdesign present three proposed designs to the Crescent City Council in May and the Councilors adopt a finalized master plan in July to submit to the state. The new plan is to have

The Del Norte Sheriff’s Office arrested a suspected child predator Sept. 26 in an undercover sting operation. Spearheaded by Deputy Sarah Asbury, of the DNSO’s Investigations Unit, and with the assistance of an undercover decoy, the DNSO Jason Walton apprehended Jason Walton, 39. Del Norte County Sheriff Erik Apperson called the arrest “quite disturbing.” “As all suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, the purpose of this post is to encourage parents to have a discussion with their children about the risks involved when associating with unknown people, especially via the internet,” Apperson wrote on the DNSO Facebook page. According to the DNSO, Walton began conversing over the web-based app MeetMe with an individual who claimed to be a 14-year-old female. At the time of his arrest, Walton had no criminal history, according to the DNSO. “He was less than honest about where he lived and his age,” Apperson said. “He encouraged the decoy to leave ‘her’ house once her mother left for work. He specified a particular beach location to perform sexual acts at a scheduled time. He also brought specific items, that we would rather not mention, to utilize and give to the decoy.” Instead of the decoy though, the suspect met several DNSO deputies, including Asbury. Walton was arrested without incident, evidence was collected and the case has been forwarded to the District Attorney for review. Walton is being held at Del Norte County Jail on three charges: - Harmful matter sent with intent of seduction of a minor; - Contact with a minor with intent to commit a sex crime; - And arrange meeting with a minor for sexual purpose. Walton is being held on $100,000 bail. “We understand that putting out information like this could potentially alert other predators in our area, but we believe that in these particular circumstances, prevention outweighs the need to wait and catch people in the

OBITUARIES Carolyn F. Tweed July 23, 1951 – Sept. 7, 2020

The family of Carolyn Tweed sadly share her recent passing in Crescent City, California, following her battle with cancer. She was 69 years old. Carolyn Francis Currie was born July 23rd, 1951 to Charles and Francis Currie, of Hawthorne, California. She was raised in Hawthorne and attended Leuzinger High School. Carolyn was always ready for adventure. She spent her time riding motorcycles in the desert, enjoying days at the beach, and playing with her best friend from across the street, Kathy Kaufman. Kathy and Carolyn were life-long friends who stayed in close contact. Carolyn told stories that often included Kathy. After her brother and parents moved to Crescent City, Carolyn was not far behind to make Crescent City her home.

Carolyn met Chuck Tweed in Gasquet, California in 1975, and together built a life filled with love, excitement and commitment. Carolyn and Chuck made their home in Crescent City where they raised their family. Carolyn’s adventures were always fun and filled with family and friends. They included starting a new business in Alaska with her husband, canning food with the Millers, and covered wagon rides with the Straights/Dixons. She treasured campouts while salmon fishing with her brother Jim Currie, her friend Kathy and her husband Lou, and with Chuck. She was a frequent participant at the Jed Smith Mountain Man Rendezvous, camping and shooting with the best of them. Carolyn always had a go-with-the-flow attitude and was up for just about anything. Throughout the years she gathered her family for many adventures such as camping, being on the river, fishing, house boating, and enjoying beach bonfires while surf fishing. Carolyn was extremely talented and had many hobbies, including painting, leatherwork (which she learned from her mother) and woodworking (which she learned from her father). One of her many artistic endeav

ors was learning chain saw art from the late Art Stone. Carolyn greatly enjoyed her sister-in-laws: the late Leslie McNamer, Crystal Birch and Michelle Strange. Get these ladies together and they could laugh about anything. Carolyn’s family who will miss and love her forever are; her husband of more than 45 years, Chuck Tweed, sons Charles Tweed (Jennifer) of Crescent City, California, and Christopher Tweed (Michelle) of Central Point, Oregon and daughter Chelsee (Tressen) Smith of Crescent City, California. Along with grandchildren Dawson, Gavyn, and Emma Tweed and Allie and Daxten Smith of Crescent City, California and Riley and Brody Tweed of Central Point, Oregon. Whenever Carolyn saw any of her grandchildren, her smile would light up the room. She also leaves behind her brother Jim Currie whom she loved and respected, along with his wife Vera of Crescent City, California, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins from a large extended family. Her parents Charles and Francis Currie and her son James Tweed preceded her in death. As one of Jehovah’s witnesses she had dedicated her life to being a disciple of Jesus and she showed this through her love of family, friends and Neighbors (John 13:35). Carolyn very much looked forward to a future free of sickness and death (Revelation 21:4) on a paradisiac earth. (John 5:28-29). No doubt she found great strength and joy in Job 14:14-15 “If a man dies, can he live again? I will wait all the days of my compulsory service until my relief comes. You will call, and I will answer you. You will long for the work of your hands.” No services are planned for Carolyn but your thoughts and prayers are always welcome.

Caltrans is alerting motorists who take N. Fred Haight Drive to and from U.S. Highway 101 will need to use an alternate route until Spring 2021. Caltrans is building a new bridge over Dominie Creek and reinforcing a nearby concrete box culvert. Caltrans said Northbound Highway 101 to westbound N. Fred Haight Drive and eastbound N. Fred Haight Drive to northbound and southbound Highway 101 are closed as of Oct. 1. A temporary traffic signal will be activated on Wednesday, Oct. 7 from north of Rowdy Creek Road to N. Fred Haight Drive. Traffic will be restricted to one lane through

This project will remove a reinforced concrete box culvert and will construct the all-new Dominie Creek Bridge, along with creek

restoration work. “We’d like to thank you in advance for your patience as this work will improve drainage during inclement weather conditions and benefit fish passage, among other upsides,” said Myles Cochran, Caltrans spokesman.

DNSO welcomes new deputy and correctional lieutenant Del Norte County Sheriff Erik swore in new Deputy Hossep Ourjanian Sept. 11 and newly promoted Correctional Lieutenant Kyle Stevens. Ourjanian comes to Del Norte County after a threeyear tour with the Sierra County Sheriff’s Office. Ourjanian started his law enforcement career in 1990, working for the Southern California Rapid Transit. He also served with the Los Angeles County Office of Pubic Safety before going to work for the City of Weed Police Department in 2000. At the WPD, he rose in ranks to sergeant and among his duties was field training officer. Ourjanian has also served in the California Army National Guard from 1991 through 2012. Meanwhile, from 2008-16, he was employed by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. “I appreciate the vast level of experience Deputy Ourjanian brings with him and I am grateful he has chosen to serve our Del Norte Community. I truly believe he will be an excellent addition to the DNSO team,” Apperson said on the department’s Facebook page. Ourjanian is joined in Del Norte with his wife Nicole and son Christian. Stevens grew up in El Cajon, California and moved to Del Norte County in 1997. He is a graduate of Sunset High School and College of the Redwoods Police Academy. Stevens started his career with the DNSO in 2010 as a dispatcher. He then served

I also know his heart has always been in corrections and I’m confident he will do well.”

Del Norte County awarded Homekey Funding The Triplicate

Governor Gavin Newsom announced Sept. 28 that Del Norte County received $2.4 million in the third round of awards for Homekey. The $600 million program purchases and rehabilitates housing, including hotels, motels, vacant apartment buildings and other properties, and converts them into permanent, long-term housing for people experiencing or at risk of experiencing homelessness. Heather Snow, Del Norte County Department of Health and Human

Services Director, said the agency has been renting rooms on behalf of needy clients for years and has been occupying a local motel at full capacity for over the past six months to protect vulnerable individuals from COVID-19. Snow said Homekey funds will allow the department to work with partnering agency Rural Communities Housing Development Corporation (RCHDC) to purchase the motel and convert it from interim to permanent housing, adding 30 units to the local affordable housing inventory.

“This project will end homelessness for approximately 16% of Del Norte County’s homeless population, as identified in the 2019 Point in Time Survey,” Snow said. “The department will work with RCHDC to develop a tiered rent approach for the tenants, to promote self-sufficiency and strengthen financial sustainability.” Snow added through onsite management and ongoing linkage to supportive services, individuals will receive the support they need to maintain permanent long-term housing in

the community. Del Norte County Supervisor Lori Cowan said she has been working for the past four years with community partners to address the need for housing in the community and advocating for a solution. “This is a solution,” Cowan said. “We still have a lot of work to do together to take care of our residents, and this is a big step in the right direction.” Del Norte County Sheriff Erik Apperson, who has also been working closely with the DHHS for several years to tackle homelessness, wholeheart-

edly supports the Homekey initiative to purchase a local motel and convert it to permanent housing. “This project is a huge win. Increasing our housing inventory with this award will help us meet the needs of our community and significantly reduce local homelessness. We can’t just wish homelessness away. We have to formalize some sort of response to it,” Apperson said. Governor Newsom announced Homekey in June, and in July made $600 million in funding available. Of that, $550 million will be provided to cities and

counties by California’s direct allocation of the federal Coronavirus Aid Relief Funds, with an additional $50 million provided by the state to supplement the acquisition and provide initial operating funds. Awards will be announced on a weekly basis through October 2020. Eligible projects that did not receive funding will be placed on a waiting list in case additional funding is made available. While the world is now about halfway through the “introduction period” of the coronavirus, Del Norte’s health officer is reminding residents it’s the start of the influenza season. In his letter to the community Sept. 29, Dr. Warrent Rehwaldt Del Norte County Public Health Office is planning for the eventual rollout of a vaccine for the coronavirus, which may be available in the next few months. “Other vaccines are on the way, and by this time next year, I think it is safe to say that most Americans and many others around the globe will have had their first COVID vaccines,” Rehwaldt said. However, he wanted to focus his message on vaccines that are available now — the influenza vaccine. With the overlap in precautions for both the coronavirus and the flu virus — social distance, face coverings, hand hygiene,

cleaning — Rehwaldt said there are ground to believe the upcoming flu season will be at a pretty low level. “But, we in public health and others in the medical community really want to take this season’s flu out of the picture as much as possible,” Rehwaldt said. “This means people need to get vaccinated, especially with schools reopening.” He explained that the Southern Hemisphere has already gone through its flu season, as it is opposite to ours. By emphasizing everyone get vaccinated, they’ve experienced a quite good season, Rehwaldt said. “There are very few good reasons for not getting a vaccine,” he said. First, Rehwaldt said you do not get the flu from getting the flu shot. He explained that only the inhaled spray uses any kind of live virus. However, it’s been made to not be infectious inside the body because it’s temperature sensitive. A flu shot can some-

times trigger a reaction that resembles a mild case of the flu, giving recipients what medical professionals call “influenza-like illness,” Rehwaldt explained. Second, influenza vaccines are no longer depend on a virus being grown in chicken eggs, which has been standard procedure for decades. This means that even those with true egg allergies can still get a safe version of the flu vaccine, he said. “So, for the good of all, please get vaccinated for the flu this season,” Rewaldt added. “It helps keep people safe from bad cases of the flu, helps us keep our hospital running smoothly, and most of all this year, it will enable our medical professionals to be better focused on COVID-19.” Speaking of the pandemic, Rewaldt said every new germ that has ever affected humans has probably gone through that same initial introduction phase, where it runs through the population and affects everybody. “In the past, that is what

was called plagues. How it affects people at the time depends on the nature of the germ, and how well we can develop immunity,” he said. The good news, Rewaldt added, is evidence is showing the human body’s immune system is remembering the coronavirus like it does other infections, building up its immunity. “Most immunity is sort of partial immunity; you get sick with something the first time and it may knock you down for quite a while but the next time you catch it, the infection is much reduced,” Rehwaldt explained. “Your immune system remembers that particular germ and goes into high gear right away the next time. We are starting to see signs that COVID is likely to behave this way in humans as well, which is a good thing.” He added the key for COIVD-19 vaccines development is their ability to trigger the body’s immune system to remember its exposure to the coronavirus.

Governor Gavin Newsom issued an emergency proclamation Sept. 25 for the counties of Del Norte, Los Angeles and Mendocino to bolster the response to various fires which have burned thousands of acres, destroyed homes and caused the evacuation of residents. The governor also signed an executive order to streamline recovery efforts in communities across the state impacted by devastating fires. The order extends the state’s prohibition on price gouging in impacted counties through March 25, 2021; extends the deadline for impacted residents to file a claim for property tax postponement; and directs the Franchise Tax Board,

Board of Equalization, Department of Tax and Fee Administration and the Office of Tax Appeals to provide extensions to impacted residents and businesses for filing, audits, billing, notices and assessments, among other provisions. In addition, the order expedites debris removal and cleanup of hazardous waste resulting from the fires and allows the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Federal Emergency Management Agency to provide mutual aid supplementing the state’s efforts. Tuesday, Sept. 29: • At 6:26 a.m., a report of a tree on fire at mile post 30.33 on Highway 199 near Gasquet. Forrest Service was notified. • At 7:14 a.m., a report of a large, illegal burn pile at Old Mill Road and Heights Access Road. • At 7:17 a.m., a motorist reported he accidentally backed into another vehicle at 9th and J streets. • At 8:39 a.m., a report of a strong smell of propane or natural gas in the area of Oregon Mountain Road off Highway 199. • At 9:57 a.m., a motorist reported she believed a subject shot a gun from a vehicle while traveling through the Collier Tunnel on Highway 101 near Gasquet.

A 51-year-old man was arrested Sept. 23 for an October 2019 armed robbery. In October of 2019, the Crescent City Police Department responded to a report of an armed robbery at Subway, located at 309 Highway 101 South. At the time of the investigation the suspect was not located. Investigators learned at one point during the robbery, the victim was locked in the bathroom before the suspect fled the scene. On Sept. 23, CCPD Officer Johnathan Cooper was granted an arrest warrant for a suspect he identified through his ongoing investigation. Later in the evening

Chief Richard Griffin, Sgt. Anthony Lopez and Canine Lt. Kai were able to locate and arrest the suspect in the 700 block of Lauff Avenue. Johnny Ponciano, 51, was arrested and booked in to the Del Norte County Jail for armed robbery, false imprisonment and kidnapping. The investigation is being forwarded to the Del Norte County District Attorney for review. “I want to recognize Officer Cooper for his dedication to working this investigation with limited initial evidence to work with,” Griffin wrote on the CCPD Facebook page. Ponciano is being held on $250,000 bail.

Man arrested for attempted murder Crescent City Police Department arrested a 23-year-old man Sept. 21 for attempted murder and hit and run for intentionally hitting a man with his car. According to the CCPD Police Chief Richard Griffin, at 1:17 p.m. Sept. 20, Johnathon James Michael Amos struck the victim with his 1990s Mazda 323 at the Chevron Station located at 315 Highway 101 then fled the scene. Griffin said investigators believe the hit and run was intentional based feud or ongoing issues between the two. “Witnesses saw the victim going up and over the hood of the car,” Griffin said. “They said he drove away looking angry.” The victim, a 32-yearold Crescent City man, was transported to Sutter Coast Hospital where he was reported in stable condition.

Jonathon Amos However, Griffin said once there, he was uncooperative with investigators over the incident. Amos was later arrested Sept. 21 in a vacant lot in the 300 block of McNamara Street. He was booked into Del Norte County Jail and charged with attempted murder and hit and run resulting in injury. Amos is being held on $250,000 bail.

Arrest made in 2019 Elks Lodge burglary A 53-year-old Crescent City man was arrested Sept. 28 for a Nov. burglary at the Elks Lodge. On Nov. 11, 2019, an officer from the Crescent City Police Department responded to a report of a male subject making a lot of noise the area of the Elks Lodge, located at 359 H Street. According to the CCPD, the subject was not located in the area. Officers then discovered a burglary had occurred at the Elks Lodge and recovered evidence from outside the building as well as numerous areas inside. Through further investigation and analysis of the evidence items recovered by the Department of Justice, Officer Tyler Balch was able to author and receive a Ramey Warrant on Sept. 28

for the arrest of Donald Ira Baker, 53, of Crescent City. Baker was then located by CCPD officers and arrested on the same day the warrant was issued. According to Police Chief Richard Griffin, Baker was booked into the Del Norte County Jail and charged with burglary. Bake is being held on $50,000 bail.

CRIMINAL CONVICTIONS

The following report of criminal convictions between Sept. 18-24 was provided by the Superior Court of Del Norte County: • Douglas Matthew Banks, 49, of Vacville, California, was convicted of driving under the influence of an intoxicant, sentenced to jail for two days, probation for three years and a fine of $1,860. • David Andrew Bonde, 57, of Brookings, Oregon, was convicted of driving on a suspended license with a prior, sentenced to jail for 120 days and a fine of $2,274. Bonde was also convicted of violating probation, sentenced to jail for 120 days and a fine of $150. • Dakota Michael Farra, 25, of Crescent City, was convicted of damaging or taking parts off a vehi-

cle on the highway, two counts of possession of burglary tools, attempted theft and intercept of police radio communications, sentenced to jail for 180 days and a fine of $500. • Raymond Johnson Gregg, 34, of Crescent City, was convicted on two counts of violating probation and sentenced to jail for 30 days. • Carolyn Mae Oquist, 62, or Orick, California, was convicted of violating probation and sentenced to jail for 80 days. • Steven Louis Sills, 43, of Crescent City, was convicted on two counts of fleeing an officer/reckless driving, first degree burglary, theft and unlawful driving, sentenced to prison for 7 years and 4 months, and a fine of $2,630. Sills was also

convicted on four counts of violating mandatory supervision, and has already served his sentence of 3 years and 297 days in jail. • Erick Paul Skillman, 38, of Crescent City, was convicted of felony driving under the influence of an intoxicant causing an injury, sentenced to prison for three years and a fine of $370. Skillman was also convicted of a second case of driving under the influence of an intoxicant, sentenced to jail for six months and a fine of $220. • Hailee Elayne Sutherland, 33, of Crescent City, was convicted of violating probation, so her initial sentence of jail for two years and a fine of $300 is now imposed for the crime of second degree burglary and vandalism/ defacement over $50,000.

Local Art Scene Funds for Artists’ Resilience Call for Artists (repeat) The Funds for Artists’ Resilience (FAR) is searching for local artists of all types who are interested in creating new public art works with the theme of “Resilience”. Individual projects will be funded up to $1,000 and collaborations will be funded up to $5,000. FAR is a collaboration between the Ink People Center for the Arts, Trinity County Arts Council, and Del Norte Association for Cultural Awareness (DNACA), with funds provided from the Humboldt Area Foundation and Wild Rivers Community Foundation. PUBLIC NOTICE OF MITIGATED NEGATIVE DECLARATION As required by the California Environmental Quality Act, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Fisheries Restoration Grant Program is providing Public Notice of the completion of a Mitigated Negative Declaration for its proposed Fisheries Habitat Restoration Project to enhance the capability of streams to produce anadromous salmonids by maintaining, restoring, and improving stream habitat essential to salmonid production. Implementation Project Locations: Various streams in Del Norte, Humboldt, Mendocino, Santa Barbara, Siskiyou, and Sonoma counties. Description of Project: This project will use grant funds approved by the California Legislature to initiate activities that are designed to restore salmon and steelhead habitat in coastal streams and watersheds that historically produced large populations of salmon and steelhead. Activities like bank stabilization and road decommissioning will improve spawning success for adult salmon and steelhead as well as increase survival for eggs, embryos, rearing juveniles, and downstream migrants. The replacement of barrier culverts with bridges or natural stream bottom culverts will allow adult and juvenile salmonids access to additional spawning and rearing habitat. The installation of instream structures will recruit and sort spawning gravel for adult salmon and steelhead and create summer rearing pools and over-wintering habitat for juveniles. The mitigated negative declaration can be accessed online at https://www.wildlife.ca.gov/Grants/FRGP/MND. FRIEND WANTS TO BREAK UP WITH LONGTIME GOLF PARTNER DEAR ABBY: Years ago, I met a man through golf, and we developed a casual friendship. I lost track of him for a few years, but when I heard his wife was being treated with chemo for cancer, I took them food and offered my support. As our friendship grew stronger, we began playing more golf and became “refriended.” He’s a good golfer, but very serious, and he whines constantly on the course. I have kidded him about it, and he acknowledges it to a small degree. He’s also joined at the hip with his wife, so much so that when I invited him to our cabin for a guys’ weekend, he asked if his wife and dog could come along. I nixed the dog and reluctantly agreed to the wife. A year later, I

invited him again, but without his wife because two other friends were coming and it was guys only. He came, but he didn’t really fit in. Fast-forward to now. Our friendship continues, but his whining has grown much worse, and he can’t go anywhere without his wife (although she’s very nice). She has mentioned to friends that I’m one of only a few remaining friends, and she appreciates it very much. Now I know why! How do I “break up,” Abby? I don’t want to be around him anymore. -ANONYMOUS IN THE WEST

DEAR ANONYMOUS: Because your friend doesn’t fit in with the other guy friends, no rule of etiquette says you must continue to invite him. I wish you had mentioned what he whines about when you golf with him. If it is his wife’s precarious health, it may be that he needs to vent in a cancer support group rather than with you. If it’s the golf game, then you will have to decide whether he’s such a valuable golf partner that you need him. If other members of your golf group no longer want him there, it would be a kindness to socialize with him and his wife less often rather than abandon them. If the shoe was on the other foot, isn’t that what you would want? *** DEAR ABBY: My siblings died a couple of years apart, and my parents treat me like I’m the one who should be gone. They often

complain or compare the things I do to something they would have done. My parents raised me to be independent and take care of myself, but all they do is show me that I don’t matter.
