Crescent City man still missing By David Hayes Staff Writer
T
his is Day 8 for the Danztman family. It’s been eight days since Norbert (Tony) Dantzman, who was attending a family centennial reunion in rural Winter, Wisconsin, walked away from his motel room and disappeared. Dantzman, 89, suffers from dementia and other cognitive issues. He had traveled from Crescent City to Wisconsin with his daughter, Cindy Dantzman-Smith, and her husband, Kendall. Granddaughter Haley Smith, who couldn’t attend the reunion, is coordinating
communications for the family with the Sawyer County search efforts in Wisconsin. “I feel so helpless,” said Smith. “They’re trying so hard. The head of the search and rescue team said that after a long day of searching, she goes home and the search area becomes her back yard. “They’ve done an amazing job. I really appreciate their time and effort,” Smith said. The search began at 10:38 a.m. Aug. 30, when the Sawyer County Sheriff’s Department received a 911 call reporting Dantzman missing from the Winter Northern Lights Motel in the Village of Winter.
According to the sheriff’s office, surveillance cameras at the motel showed Dantzman leaving his room about 9 a.m. and walking north toward the Norwood Trailer Court. Eyewitnesses at the trailer court said they saw an elderly man fitting Dantzman’s description walking at 9:30 through the trailer court toward County Highway West, the continuing north along the highway. Sawyer County Deputies, Sawyer County Search and Rescue personnel, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, the Winter Fire Department, and family and community members combed the immediate area, executing
grid searches while utilizing drones and canines. No trace of Dantzman was found. The search efforts were suspended late that evening. Family members said they’re surprised Dantzman would wander off alone. “He’s never wandered off before,” said his oldest daughter, Sandra Garner, who lives in Grants Pass and was unable to attend the reunion because of a broken ankle. “He spent the night a few weeks ago at my house and didn’t wander off. I used to take him dancing

the room for a spaghetti feed and silent auction to support Poy-Wuson Aguilar. Aguilar was diagnosed with leukemia two weeks ago. His 16th birthday was last week. Aguilar, a member of the Yurok Tribe, lives a driven, full life. He plays on the football, wrestling and baseball teams at Del Norte High School, has participated in the Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office Explorer program for three years, and makes time for many friends. Aguilar works hard in all he does. Now, he must work hard to fight his cancer. “He’s gonna beat it,” said Jakob Sherer, one of Poy’s closest friends. “Poy’s one of the most respected and outgoing kids I know.” Aguilar couldn’t attend Wednesday night’s event in his honor. He was at the University of California, San Francisco Benioff Children’s Hospital in
Oakland, where he’s undergoing chemotherapy. About a week ago, the sheriff’s office decided to host the spaghetti feed and silent auction to help Aguilar’s family cover his cost of staying in Oakland while receiving treatment. Within the event’s first 30 minutes, 150 dinners had been sold. Meals for slightly more than 300 diners had been prepared. They were sold out by night’s end. Tables along one wall were filled with custom T-shirts, hot sauce, cookies and other goodies for the silent auction – all donated by local people and businesses. Area musician Tom Alderman provided entertainment on his guitar while people ate. “This turnout is amazing,” said Ashley Hepburn, the mother of one of Aguilar’s friends. “It brings tears to my eyes. The community has really pulled together for Poy.”

What everyone should know about suicide
Suicide is influenced by an assortment of risk factors and underlying vulnerabilities. Mental health issues, low self-esteem, toxic family dynamics, bullying or a major loss can all potentially play a part in a person’s decision to end their own life. But none of these dynamics will cause suicide directly. It’s important for family and friends to think of suicide not as a single event, but as a succession of beliefs, behaviours and impulses that if recognized in time, can be stopped. WARNING SIGNS Clear warning signs precede the vast majority of suicides. Never ignore or dismiss people who indicate any of the following: • Wanting to die, disappear or do themselves harm. May be shared verbally, on social media or in some other fashion. • Sudden loss of interest in activities they once enjoyed. • Severely isolating themselves from friends and family. • Dramatic changes in sleep or eating habits. • Reckless or erratic behaviour. • Use of drugs or alcohol. • Sudden changes in personality. May include altered school or job
performance, withdrawal from activities, deterioration of social relationships or other atypical behaviours. Most importantly, someone who’s already made a suicide attempt is extremely vulnerable. No matter how seemingly feeble or half-hearted the attempt was, the person in question is at risk — after all, they may be “successful” the next time they try — and should be given professional help. HOW TO HELP Parents and caregivers may mistakenly believe that only a professional can identify a child at risk for suicide. However, the reality is that parents are frequently the first to identify warning signs and are most able to intervene in a loving manner. The most important thing parents can do is encourage their teen to talk to a trusted adult. Asking teens about suicide will not cause them to become suicidal. To the contrary, confiding in a non-judgmental person about their feelings and concerns can lead teens to consider constructive solutions to their problems. Additionally, parents should undertake appropriate protective and preventive measures to help their kids. This might include:

AB 5 can be a newspaper killer Rob Berkowitz Guest Opinion
“T
he job is yours, son.� I couldn’t believe it; it was my first job. I was going to be a businessman at the age of 12. I was being hired by the San Francisco Chronicle to have my own newspaper route. Every morning, I would get up before 6:00, get my papers from the delivery truck on the corner, get on my bicycle and deliver 125 newspapers to my customers. At the end of the month, I had to collect from each of my customers and keep careful count of the money. As a young person, I was learning what it was like to be in business for oneself. Many years later, when I bought radio station KPLY AM - later turned into KCRE - from Mason Deaver, he was able to supplement his retirement income by delivering The Triplicate and the Times Standard to his customers. We were not alone in creating our own
businesses. Today, thousands of kids, single mothers, retirees and others looking for extra money supplement their income by delivering newspapers. Sadly, if the State of California has its way, all of this is will vanish. AB 5, by Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzales of San Diego, would treat newspaper carriers as employees rather than independent contractors. As employees, they would get employee benefits like health care, retirement, sick leave, etc., benefits that are extremely costly to their employer. It’s no secret that thousands of newspapers have gone bankrupt, or just ceased publishing, because they could no longer absorb their increased costs. Let’s face it, we almost lost The Triplicate. Some businesses have already been exempted from this law, such as doctors, investment advisors and real estate agents. But not newspaper carriers. In a recent editorial, the Santa Rosa Press
Democrat said, “Failure to exempt newspaper carriers - who have been recognized by the state as independent contractors since 1987 - could force some publications to scrap their print editions and rely solely on online publishing.� This bill already has passed the Assembly and is headed to the Senate, where it has an excellent chance of passing. If this bill passes and is signed by the governor, it could mean the end of many more newspapers. If you want to ensure the continued existence of our local newspaper, please call Sen. That is why it is so hard to address. I can think of seven, which tend to be interrelated. As each of these problems increase, the number of people who are homeless does, too. As these numbers start to overwhelm our systems, the problems grow. 1) Poverty: “The poorâ€? have always been with us. They were once taken care of by family, churches, fraternal-aid organizations, and other charities, which could never do enough. Gradually governmentaid programs covered more of this need, but programs and budgets have been cut as taxpayers have balked. 2) Economics: After the Second World War, America was one of few developed countries not destroyed ‌ governments, infrastructure, economic system, population. We were able to employ workers to manufacture what others needed to get going again. Following the end of the cold war, with American capital and technologies, less-developed countries of the world that achieved some political stability began making their own stuff, and ours, too, for less than we could, given our higher living standards. So, Wall Street and Silicon Valley have profited greatly. But that prosperity has not been spread through the population. With less lucrative work for the middle class, the effort to maintain that standard of living has included supporting the household on multiple incomes, working multiple jobs, using up savings, curtailing or taking out huge loans for education, not saving for retirement, credit debt, never-ending mortgages,
and ultimately for some, losing their houses. While the Great Recession bail-out saved the economy, the money did not reach Main Street. Neither do the recent tax cuts. Wages have not nearly kept up with the cost of living. 3) Housing Prices: If folks who have more find your community to be the next desirable place to live, housing prices can vastly outpace inflation. Construction becomes high-end, older housing gets remodeled, and the least-expensive housing can give way to fire, decay, destruction and demolition. Places people were able to afford disappear. Building codes (intended for safer, healthier, more-efficient, longerlasting housing) boost new-home construction beyond the affordable. 4) Bad Luck: With more families on the edge of their income, it does not take much bad luck to become a catastrophe. Medical bills, accidents, being a victim of theft or fraud, car problems, debt loads, rent increases, family crisis, etc., are more than many can bear before they cannot maintain their home. 5) Mental Health: Years ago, “we� let folks with mental problems out of the old “asylums� to live in less-restrictive settings, as was their right. Unfortunately, we did not replace that old system with adequate community support for all. So many struggle as best they can without what it takes to maintain a stable life in today’s increasingly difficult society. 6) Addiction: When a chemical becomes someone’s overriding priority, it can be only a matter of time before they sacrifice everything they have and care for to fill that, eventually including their household.

Not all people who are homeless are addicts, of course, but addiction can certainly lead there. 7) Division: Respect is the foundation of democracy and the rule of law. The majority listens to and respects the needs and rights of the minority. The minority, enjoying rights and feeling heard and represented, respects the resulting laws. That’s the deal. When groups start disrespecting and expressing contempt for each other, the deal is broken. When the minority feels unheard, reviled and their rights undermined, they may no longer feel that the laws are theirs. Less respect for the laws by minorities leads to “crackdowns� by majorities to enforce them. Obviously, this feeds back into the division and we develop a deteriorating society in a death spiral. In this case of homelessness, these groups are “haves� and “have nots.� These dynamics must be understood, if we are to successfully address homelessness and help those struggling with it. We may have to find solutions to some of the underlying problems to make much difference in this symptom. It may help to realize that in a way, these folks are “below� the law, in the sense that you cannot punish a person back into having a home. They cannot pay fines, and we cannot commit them all to jail. Even a more-benign forbearance is not much answer for those who can no longer afford or access the basics of roofs, bathrooms or trash service.
On the Sunday afternoon before Labor Day, I was on my daily walk with my little dog down Howe Drive by Beachfront Park. I was just approaching the path behind the sewer plant when a young man came up behind me and said, “I’ll walk through here with you.� I kept walking without looking at him, not knowing why I needed an escort. As I was nearing the
ODOT offers clarification on highway slide repairs Dear Editor: I would like to provide clarification on two issues that were mentioned in your article, “A permanent fix for Highway 101 slide is now delayed� (Sept. 4). First, the project described in the article is not a “permanent fix� and will not prevent another slide from happening near Hooskanaden Creek. The project would simply return the highway to the condition it was in before the ground moved. Slides will continue to occur in this area and ODOT will continue to

Seabirds, like salmon and fishermen, have bad
seasons at times, but this is the second disastrous one in three years. The first was attributed to “the blob� of warm water that affected our coast from 2015 to 2017. Now, there is another blob - only bigger filling the entire north Pacific with a warm-water anomaly. Water at our beaches is all above 60 degrees. Great for swimming, not so much for marine life. Welcome to global warming.
What hurts, though, is going down to any of the wonderful beaches with my dogs and seeing trash everywhere. I was schooled by friends here, right after my arrival, to carry a trash bag and pitch in if I could. I do, and see others doing the same. Most days, there are just small items here and there. Some days, nothing; and that’s reassuring. However, there have been a few where I have seen enough trash for more bags than I had. Litter anywhere is
ugly, but next to nature’s paradise it seems worse. I’ve also learned to park at Crissey Field and other places not so secluded, as my truck got broken into at the Pelican Beach access just south of the agriculture checkpoint on the border. That said, this is my new home. I am loving it do not plan on ever leaving.

Immediately, the young man walking slightly behind me got between the man and me and started talking. As I walked rapidly on, I heard the young man say in a calm voice, “Hey, you leave her alone, she’s my grandma.� He continued to engage the man in talk until I reached the end of the path by B Street. Since I had to return down the path, I called 911. There was a group at the end of the jetty, and when I said I had to return down the path to my car they all said, “Oh, we’ll walk with you.� But just as we started back down the path, two
police cars arrived and the officers started walking towards the screaming man. What could have been a very bad scene left me thinking what a great place Crescent City is. First, the young man who voluntarily walked with me, to whom I am so grateful. Also, thanks to the people at the end of the jetty who so quickly said they would walk back to my car with me. And I so appreciate the police responding so quickly. It is no wonder I love Crescent City so much.
repair the road when they do. Second, we want to make clear that Tidewater Contractors made a goodfaith effort to help us find a solution. We want to thank them for submitting a bid, reviewing the project and offering their expert opinion. After the slide occurred, ODOT’s intention was to return the road alignment to its original condition as soon as possible. Our staff followed an expedited process so that a project could bid this year. Unfortunately, the Aug. 13 bid date may have come too late in the season. This may explain why we only received one bid. When we reached out to other contractors to ask why they had not submitted bids, most mentioned the challenges of finding disposal sites and securing
enough trucks to transport that much material in such a short timeframe. We have decided to take the feedback we received from Tidewater and other contractors, review the project plans and look for ways to improve the project, which will be postponed until next spring or summer. We would like to once again thank Tidewater for going above and beyond the call of duty this past winter in responding to the Hooskanaden slide and quickly re-opening the highway. Without their efforts, the highway would have been closed much longer.

OBITUARIES Eleanor Heldreth Parsons
April 16, 1929 – September 1, 2019
Eleanor Parsons passed away on September 1, 2019 in Grants Pass, Oregon after a long illness at the age of 90. Eleanor was born on April 16, 1929 in Lumberport, West Virginia. She lived in the State until graduating from Washington Irving High School in Clarksburg, West Virginia in 1947. After graduation, at the age of 18 she moved west, locating in Crescent City, California to be close to several of her Uncle’s that were living in Crescent City. She worked for a short time in her Uncle Tom Wadsworth’s Jewelry store in the City. In December 1948 she was hired by the Del Norte County Sheriff ’s Department as an entry level clerk. She was very dedicated to the Department and became one of their most valued and outstanding employees. She served the Sheriff ’s Department for 18 years, ending her tenure in January 1967 as its Chief Civil Deputy. She left the department to join her husband Dale Parsons in new business partnership they purchased together. Eleanor met Dale Parsons in 1949. He was born in Crescent City and working at the time in his father’s trucking business. Both Dale and Eleanor were immediately smitten with each other and soon were engaged. They were married on April 9, 1950 in the United Methodist Church in Crescent City. They were members of the Church for more than 68 years until Dale’s passing in May 2018. In 1966, Dale and Eleanor purchased Burtchell’s Paint Store in Crescent City, and soon re-named it Parsons Paints. Eleanor and Dale genuinely enjoyed working together in business. They were a great team. Eleanor was the highly skilled office manager who expertly kept the stores books, and records balanced. Dale was a gifted salesman who could both sell to and service their

customers. They operated the store for 20 years, and also expanded it to build a larger store on 225 I Street, and added new floorcovering and interior decorating products. Eleanor and Dale worked very hard to create a customer friendly business that quickly became the premier store to go to for residents and businesses in Del Norte County CA, and in Curry County Oregon for their painting, floorcovering, and interior decorating needs. The Parsons were especially generous with their time, talents and resources in helping to promote the economic welfare and quality of life in the communities they served. They upheld the highest standards of honesty, integrity and quality customer service in operating their family business. They were strong supporters of the Crescent City Chamber of Commerce and enjoyed participating in business development and in promoting the local economy. During their working years Eleanor and Dale enjoyed business trips, boating, and traveling together to visit family members and friends. After retiring from their store business in 1986, Eleanor and Dale joined with several friends and formed the “Tsunami Sam’s” RV group. They enjoyed many years of recreational travel together throughout the country. Eleanor’s life was also enriched by her involvement in many other civic and community affairs. For many years she was an active member of the Soroptimist Club in Crescent City, serving as President and Board member. She was a very patriotic person who especially enjoyed being an active member of the Republican Party all her adult life; and in the Federated Republican Women of Del Norte County, serving as its President in 2004. She could always be seen with Dale participating in Crescent City’s annual 4th of July parade showcasing the Grand Old Party! Eleanor’s other hobbies and interests included reading and writing to her family and friends and learning how to use a computer. She also had a special talent for gardening around their home and nursery; as well as making pottery, crocheting and sewing special blankets and comforters. Eleanor was a very bright and gifted person, with a warm and inviting personality and a generous heart, who also embraced humility, grace and reverence for God throughout her life. She was devoted to her faith as a Christian and as a person that
really cared for others who were in need. She was especially caring for her closest family members and friends in times of illness. Her unconditional devotion and love for her husband stood the test of time. When he fell seriously ill the last few years of his life, she loved and cared for him every day until his passing in May of last year. What a gift she was to him, and he was to her. Eleanor was preceded in death by her husband Dale, her parents Curtis and Manila Heldreth, her mother and father in-law Henry and Marian Parsons, her brothers Holbert, and Walter Heldreth, her sisters Ruby and Evelin Heldreth; and her brother and sister in-law Richard and Shirley Zais. She is survived by her cousins Wes and Linda Wadsworth, Betty Sherman and her daughter Melanie, and Sharon Van Bebber; her brother in-laws Wayne Parsons, Gary Parsons and his wife Jean, nephews Richard Zais and his wife Tammy, Gary Halverson and his wife Susan, Hank Halverson and his wife Gena, and Joseph Parsons; nieces Kathleen West, Marilyn Brandler and her husband Bruce, and Susan Parsons Klein; her great nephews Kevin, Michael and Matthew Halvorson, Michael Oechsner, Justin Brandler and his wife Sara; great-nieces Eleanor Marie Schroeder and her husband Daniel, Jennifer Hesse and her husband Colin, Emily Proffitt and her husband John and many other extended family members and close friends throughout Del Norte County and Harrison County West Virginia. Visitation will be at Wier’s Mortuary Chapel on Friday September 13, 2019 from noon to 5:00 PM and on Saturday September 14, 2019 from 9:00 AM until service time. A Celebration of the Life of Eleanor will be held at Wier’s Mortuary Chapel in Crescent City CA on Saturday September 14, 2019 at 11:00 AM with interment to follow at the IOOF Cemetery in Crescent City. elly and Peter Chen’s business careers have been fraught with high risk. They’re hoping their latest investment, Oriental Food Market, has greater potential for success. The natives of China saw their first endeavor, a skincare company, seized by the Chinese government in 2009. A year later, they immigrated to the U.S., landing in Los Angeles with their daughter, Coco. Then, another business opportunity surfaced. A friend of a friend wanted the couple to join him in

population. According to the 2016 “Del Norte County Economic and Demographic Profile,” as of 2014 there were only 594 Asians living in all of Del Norte County. So, they needed to attract a broader customer base with the lure of worldly foodstuffs.

Unfortunately, the friend was inexperienced in the ways of American bureaucracy and administrative requirements for launching a business of the magnitude he had envisioned. So, the friend left for Canada, leaving the Chens with no immediate employment prospects. Undaunted, they opened the rear portion of their Crescent City home as an Airbnb rental, with the additional draw of Peter’s hobby collection of exotic birds, from peacocks to pheasants and egg-laying hens. And members of the search team are keeping an eye on the nearby Dantzman Ranch, where he grew up, although it’s under different ownership now. The search is including any empty buildings, any places that may be familiar to Dantzman. “We’ve checked in places that might have Marines or other veterans,” Smith said. “He’s in casinos all the time, but he didn’t have any money on him at the time. “He loves music or singing. He’d go anywhere there is a band playing. For a man his age with dementia, he’s still all go, go, go. He’s hard to slow down.” Dantzman previously had been a building contractor, responsible for many of the buildings and homes in the Crescent City area. He was married to Crescent City native Beverly Danztman for 65 years before she passed away about three years ago, Smith said. Smith fears that the over last three days before he
left for Wisconsin, maybe the dementia was accelerating. “I’m worried about him being out there so long. We always tried to keep him hydrated,” she said. Smith said the family has been putting the word out through social media in an effort to recruit more eyes on the road, including half a dozen semi-truck drivers’ Facebook pages. And Smith and Gardner have called homeless shelters, VA hospitals and other places he may have shown up, given his status as a Marine veteran. While Smith is not quite buying that her grandfather would hitchhike, given that there’s been no evidence of him in the immediate area, she’s not discounting that he may have grabbed a ride, either. “He maybe would get in a vehicle, saying he’s from California, then getting confused and getting it backward in which direction he needed to go,” she said. “He’s such a flirt, he may have been picked up by a lady who doesn’t know he’s missing. “We’re just hoping for the best.”

Still others planned a gathering, for prayer and good thoughts, at the Del Norte Recreation Department. “If anybody’s going to beat this, it’s gonna be Poy. I’m confident he’ll be back,” Apperson said. “He’s just as strong as he can be.” Before the diagnosis, Aguilar had applied for the sheriff’s office apprenticeship program,
which would prepare him for serving in law enforcement someday, a dream he has had for years. The day Aguilar flew to Oakland for hospitalization, Apperson told him he had been accepted into the program. “I was able to deliver that news to him in person right before he left. It was a great moment for
all of us, and I gave him his lapel pin and told him to hurry back,” Apperson said. For now, Aguilar is in Oakland, staying in touch with his community through friends who visit and calls via FaceTime. His community can’t wait until he returns home.

Crescent City author isn’t stumbling at all By David Hayes Staff Writer
S
usan Tietjen of Crescent City knew she had wanted to write all her life. With her latest novel, “Grace Without Grace: Stumbling Into Romance,” having just gone live on Sept. 6, Tietjen has come a long way since she finished her first novel as a fifth-grader. But listening to the stories her mom used to tell, Tietjen actually wrote her first book when she was just 3 years old. “She told me when I finally got married that she had this box of stuff she kept of things I didn’t know she had, which were little stories I’d written and given to her. One of them was from when I was 3, with lots of scribbles, a couple different colors of Crayon, especially yellow. She said that was my first book.” Her mother recalled her daughter having a fit when her mom put the book away after having it taped to the refrigerator for a while. “So, she asked me to tell her about it,” said Tittjen. “I was able to tell her the original story almost word for word, as I told it from the picture the first time I gave it to her. ‘That just told me you really loved that sort of thing,’ she said.” Tietjen struggled for years to make her first love work for her, then had to give it up. After five children and a marriage that didn’t pan out, she entered nursing school. “I had to step away from what I loved to do, to raise the family. Now, I have the time to do what I love to do.” Twenty-six years later, she and her second husband, Richard, have retired to Crescent City. Originally from Lancaster, California, Tietjen followed her parents, who decided to retire here many years ago. “I used to come here all the time with the family for vacations and holidays, loved it and decided that we’d love to retire here,” she said. Tietjen actually wrote her first book prior to retirement, a fantasy novel in a planned trilogy, “Dragon Unchained.” She’s working on the sequel, “Dragons Infernal.” Following retirement, she finished her second official book, a historical romance, “Saving Lord Whitton’s Daughter: A Regency Romance Novel.” Tietjen said she decided to

They also personally take monthly trips to San Francisco to handpick goods to sell in the store. If they miss anything, customers can text the Chens to preorder specific items. “The curiosity and excitement customers express in our produce motivate us to expand it even more,” said Chen, “by not only getting them from our suppliers, but also offering produce in exchange with our local farmers, meanwhile hoping to help reduce their financial stress.” Shelley Sovola and her son, Joshua Francis, shopped the store for the first time last week and were pleasantly surprised by what they found. “I love to cook Asian food,” Sovola said. “Where else can you get these vegetables and sugars, for example?” “Their stock is a lot more expansive than a regular store,” Francis added. One of the Chens’ more-popular innovations has been offering Saturday cooking demonstrations
publish her novels independently. “I’m a little bit on the older side, so for me being traditionally published is what you’re supposed to do. But more and more people are getting interested in ‘indie’ publishing, because the Internet is so readily available and sharing with others your story is such a wonderful thing, whether you’re the person receiving it or the person putting it out there.” She said doing so ultimately gave her more control over her work and the opportunity to make more money. Tietjen said she was helped by joining a writing group. “My first book took quite a while, but I had to go through a writing group so they could tear it apart and put it back together again. They kept me inspired to keep going. “After trying traditional publishing for over a year and a half, a friend who was extremely successful in indie publishing gave me some information to jump-start mine. It’s not easy, or for the faint-hearted. And it’s not free, because you’re taking on some of the responsibilities of a publishing house,” she said. Tietjen joined that first writing group in 2007. She currently belongs to three, including one in Crescent City, which took the summer off. A writing group can help with awareness of new laws, rules and regulations, what to watch out for, who to work with (like a cover artist) and how to get an International Standard Book Number (ISBN) bar code on the back of book, Tietjen said. She calls her latest book, “Grace Without Grace,” a romantic comedy. “The main character, Grace, has no grace, and has given up on any kind of a romantic relationship. She, for me, was the voice of those who are sometimes belittled or picked on because they’re different,” Tietjen said. Grace tries to rekindle a romance five years after walking away from the relationship. It’s a tale that is not age-specific, so it should appeal to virtually anybody, said Tietjen. “It was fun to write. This one had more things based on experiences in my own life and input others gave me, accidents that made them feel stupid. “I even have a granddaughter who told me she had gone to sit on a chair from 1-3 p.m., featuring exotic ingredients in their market. “This is not a professional restaurant, but I can show them how to make Japanese or Thai or Filipino dishes, how to know more about the cuisines, by taking our ingredients home and making it for themselves,” Chen said. Helen Evertts has been demonstrating Korean cuisine in the store since the Chens purchased it. And Sue Joseph, originally from Cambodia, has been demonstrating Asian cuisines, including Thai, Vietnamese and Filipino, for about three months. “I love it,” said Joseph, “for me to be helping others learn different cultures through cuisine. They are getting to know each other through food as a gateway to the heart of culture. I’m helping them learn my culture one plate at a time.” The Chens were surprised to learn that word of their small market is spreading regionwide. Larry Peng, a longtime friend who helps translate conversations into English for the Chens, said he’s heard tales of their success firsthand. “I play poker at the casino with mostly other retired people from Hiouchi, Grants Pass and Medford,” said Peng. “Suddenly, all these people are talking

Photo by David Hayes. in class and while talking to somebody, didn’t notice that somehow the chair had moved. So she missed it and landed on the floor. “People came running over to see if she was okay. She told them, ‘I’m fine. The floor just had something it wanted to tell me.’ And I thought that was cute. She made light of an embarrassing situation. A version of that is in the book.” She added that her husband has been very supportive of her new career. “Although sometimes he finds it hard to be supportive, like, ‘Why isn’t that book done yet? By the way, can we go walk the beach?’ “However, he’s far more likely to tell people about my writing than I am. I tend to be shy,” she said. “Grace Without Grace” will get a marketing push through the website Lovingthebook.com. It will expose the book around the world, including Great Britain, Australia and India, with a weeklong book tour, bloggers and readers giving opinions, and reviews online, like at Amazon.com. Not that writing is all Tietjen does. She said she enjoys gardening - hoping she inherited her mother’s two green thumbs - and knitting. She even submitted her first-ever crocheted tablecloth and took best in show at the 2019 Del Norte County Fair. And she’s a member of the Crescent City Fuchsia Club. Not surprisingly, she’s an avid reader, of such diverse authors as Ann McCaffery, Robin Hubb, Juliet Marillabout an Asian food market (here).” Others in the community have wanted to associate with the Chens. Sunny Baker of the Family Resource Center of the Redwoods has partnered with them on the center’s Food Smarts Workshops for Adults. “The old store didn’t usually have healthy food,” said Baker, “but Kelly likes to partner with the community for more-healthy choices. Once the Chens came on board as the new owners, they became the community’s champions.” Kelly Chen, who is still perfecting her English and speaks for her husband, who chooses to communicate almost solely in Chinese, said, “We want to thank everyone who came to our events for their warming support. Their love encourages and empowers us to make the best of everything we do. “As immigrants with our four young children, we strive to live our dreams, make our life meaningful and spread the love of Jesus Christ in this beautiful country.” Success seems to be coming their way at last. The Oriental Food Market is open 8 a.m.-8 p.m., Mondays through Saturdays. The Chens will open on Sundays for special requests in advance.

Her advice to aspiring writers: “I meet people all the time who tell me they have such marvelous ideas but aren’t sure how to get it on paper. If they’ve given me samples, I’m very saddened at how many of our younger people honestly don’t know how to write correctly, from punctuation to verb tenses. “But the ones who are really good, and know they’re really good, I encourage them to take creative-writing classes. Get involved with a magazine like ‘The Writer Magazine.’ Get good ideas. Enter contests. Get feedback. “Submit to an editor and see if they’ll accept you and work with you. Decide if you’re going to be traditional or indie. And If you select indie, commit to excellence!”

Art that’s abstract, beachy, even mousey
The Brookings Second Saturday Art Walk will offer visitors all kinds of art, music and special events from 3-6 p.m. Sept. 14 right in downtown Brookings. Special events begin at 4:00 at the PBAA/Manley Art Center, with an interview of featured artist Georgia Cockerham. The gallery theme this month is “Fluid.” Then, it’s the Brian Scott Gallery at 4:45, where Judith Falconer will discuss how and why she produces her paintings based on birds and other creatures living in and around water. Before, during and after these two special events, Ambiance by the Sea will be celebrating a “Surf’s Up” theme with music, refreshments and beach-themed art by Dale Wells and others. And at the Chetco Community Public Library, artists Dusanka Kralj, Thomas Sheets and Phillip Wadsworth will exhibit their versions of “Abstraction,” while the library’s lobby showcase will display Carolyn Milliman’s Mickey and Minnie Mouse collection. Most sites will provide free refreshments and live music in various musical styles. There are no admission charges, no obligation to buy. Many of Brookings’ downtown merchants stay open and welcome visitors during the art walk.

verwhelmed? Confused? Equipment breakdowns? Way too much going on? Decisions? Stuff everywhere? Too complicated? All of a sudden, I heard clear as a bell: “The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.” (Luke 18:27) Oh, you mean this isn’t all up to me? I’m not going to have to do it all? I don’t have to know how to do it? “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” (Proverbs 3:5,6) Somewhere, I heard how important it is to change that terminology of “to-do” list to “God’s to-do” list. Okay, dear Father/Mother, I’m ready to back off and turn to you. I’m learning that everything worth knowing and doing starts with prayer. On page 1 of the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, it says, “The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God - a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love.” Putting all my challenges on God, the divine Mind, gives me such peace and assurance that whatever is necessary to do, to know, to respond with, will certainly be revealed and taken care of. And I can go about my day with joy and giving. It isn’t always up to me to know how to do something, but that God will provide a way, even sometimes someone could
show up at the right time who will help out. Now, God knows nothing about our challenges. His care is always here, always blessing, and it’s my job to recognize that I dwell in the atmosphere of harmony. When I do that consistently and “let go and let God,” then I see that no trial can affect my harmony, and then I recognize the proof of God’s care. Recently, things came up that had me start to worry. When I realized what was going on in my thoughts, I turned to Hymn 82 in the Christian Science Hymnal: “God is working His purpose out as year succeeds to year …” I recognized that God truly is here working His purpose out, even when things seem wrong and difficult, and I looked for the good underneath that’s always there. It was very freeing. I felt the pressures leave, and eventually each of the problems just disappeared or were taken care of without stress. How do I get past the stress and worry? 1) turn to God first, knowing that He is all wisdom. 2) love my neighbor unselfishly. 3) recognize that creativity is a God-quality, in divine Mind. 4) change the idea of “time” in my thought, as Mary Baker Eddy wrote: “Organization and time have nothing to do with Life.” Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures: page 249. ources of good news can be hard to find these days. Reading the headlines might make us think that polarization, divisiveness and devastation are all around us. Yet, we also see heartwarming heroism, kindness and uplifting community support and spirit - what our community called the real “Chetco effect” during recent wildfires in our area. In those acts of goodness, we are seeing men and women expressing their real, God-given nature. Where can we find more of this good news, news that doesn’t shy away from problems but lifts our view to help us make permanent progress towards more freedom in all aspects of our lives? “What we’re looking for,” says Patricia Woodard, a practitioner of Christian Science healing, “is a view that uplifts our thoughts, changing our perspective to one that makes a difference for the better, that heals. “To me, this is what Christian Science is about: Finding a spiritual perspective of God that reveals the goodness, wellness and freedom flowing from God every day, helping those take tangible and reliable shape in our lives and the lives of others. That’s the ultimate good news!” Woodard will give a talk, “Breaking News: Freedom Is Ours Now,” on Sept. 21 at 11 a.m. at the Chetco Com-
munity Public Library, 405 Alder in Brookings. Her lecture will explore the practicality in today’s world of Christ Jesus’ life and works, as recorded in the Bible and as discussed in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, written by the founder of the Christian Science movement, Mary Baker Eddy. “I’ll share the way Christian Science has brought healing to my own life,” says Woodard, “rescuing me from a troubling situation with my teenage daughter and freeing me from the effects of an accident. I’ll also give examples of how it has helped others from different walks of life.” Woodard says, “The common thread through these experiences is a clearer view of the reality of God’s good news, that God-derived freedom is inherently ours now, releasing us from fear and pain in our lives and causing us to soar!” For many years, Woodard has been a Christian Science practitioner, praying with people for divine help and healing. She loves to travel and has lived in many parts of the U.S. and twice in Brazil. Each new culture and environment have taught her more about God, universal Love, and how all people are made to reflect God’s goodness. More recently, Woodard has been active in taking the healing ministry to those in the prison system in Dallas, Texas, where she now resides. She has also given her talk in many prisons around the country, including in Oregon.
