Taft football looks to put up numbers JOHN FIEDLER For the News Guard
Taft’s new head football coach, Jake Tolan, had just come from the locker room where he’d been handing out jerseys ahead of last Friday’s home game. Were his players excited? “They’re always excited to get their jerseys,” he said. “They’re excited to play.” His group of 13 varsity players demonstrated their enthusiasm for the game a few hours later, slipping past Salem Academy 3332 in the non-league opener on Voris Field. Among those suiting up for action on Friday were fourth-year varsity players Zane Troutt and Michael Westfall. This year’s
varsity is composed entirely of juniors and seniors. Tolan said he’d like to have more players, and he was hopeful about picking up a few for the varsity this week as school begins. All told, he and junior varsity coach Damian Huff have around 35 players—a significant majority are freshmen and sophomores. Tolan said that high-school players range widely in skills and physical development. Lower numbers make it difficult to field optimal varsity practice teams. Additional mature, skilled players would give him and the other coaches some breathing room. “Our goal is to get to 40,” he said. Longtime coach Ken Martin is the team’s defensive coordinator, with Tyler Lopez and

Brock Martin rounding out the coaching staff. After seven years as a teacher here, Tolan now gets his shot at head coach. He has worked under three different mentors as a varsity assistant. He says don’t expect any grand changes from the exciting brand of football that Taft has played recently. Fans will see “a lot of what they saw last year,” the head coach said. “I’d say in 3A (Taft’s OSAA designation) we probably throw the ball more than anybody. We have the skills to spread the field and use our speed. I thought the formula was there--I thought we’d stay the same.” Tolan mentioned quarterback Jack

Ian Schroeder’s 2016 cross country team at Taft is a collegial squad of 17 boys and five girls ready to compete in 10 invitational meets in less than two months this fall. As with many coaches, Schroeder is already looking ahead to district competition and state. Last year the Tigers qualified for state 3A competition, the first time in 10 years a team from Lincoln City had gone so far. In the meantime, Schroeder is keeping the attention of his runners solidly on the present. A recent Thursday afternoon found them gathered high in the Voris Field stands discussing participation in an athletic department fund-raiser and day’s assignments for mileage and training routes. Stempel, who as a junior has stepped into a varsity leadership roll. “He has those intangibles, he’s a leader,” Tolan said. “I’m excited to see what he’ll bring to the program over the next two years.” He praised all his players for their commitment and desire to improve. “They’ve got that ‘we’re gonna get better every practice’ mentality,” Tolan said. The Tigers will travel to Blanchet this Friday and then be home again for their West Valley League opener on September 16 against Dayton.

A lawsuit alleging the confinement of a 10-year-old student with nonverbal Down syndrome was filed against the Lincoln County School District and several of its 2014-15 staff on Aug. 30 in the U.S. District Court in Eugene. The U.S. District Court of Eugene confirmed the existence of the case #6:16-cv01739JR. Tualatin Attorney William E. Smith emailed The News Guard a press release outlining the suit and its goals. “The lawsuit alleges the staff of the Taft Elementary School in Lincoln City confined a 10-year-old boy with non-verbal Down syndrome to a ‘seclusion room’ about the size of a closet for most of the 2014-2015
school year,� said Smith’s email. “The school never informed the mother of the boy’s isolation and the mother did not become aware of the isolation until more than a month after the boy had been secluded.� At press time the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Civil Department stated they had not received the serve papers, therefore the LCSD had yet to be served. Smith said several things could result from the lawsuit, but the goal would be to raise awareness for the student’s alleged situation. Smith said the alleged student is still in the Lincoln County School District under a different Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) and is doing well. A little over two years ago, the iconic Crab Pot in Cutler City burned down, removing a cornerstone feature from Lincoln City. A site plan review to discuss the potential reconstruction of the Crab Pot is set to take place on Sept. 15 in the Northwest Conference Room at City Hall. The goal of the review, Assistant Planner Kate Daschel said, is to discuss rebuilding the fish market with a ground floor area of 896 square feet and a 212 square foot office above (total area 1108 square feet). The project also includes site improvements, including parking and landscaping. The project site is at 6019 SW Highway 101. The public will not be able to comment at the meeting. The News Guard reached out to Daschel for further information. TNG: Is this the first site plan meeting for the Crab Pot’s reconstruction or have there been others?
Daschel: Yes, this is the first meeting (generally there is just one). The planning commission has already approved reconstruction of a substantially damaged, lawful nonconforming structure. The site plan review looks at compliance with commercial design standards, parking, landscaping, etc. (detailed review). TNG: Has the site plan been approved? If no, then what will determine its approval? Daschel: The site plan has not been approved. That will happen at the September 15th site plan review meeting. Staff will review the proposal with city standards, including but not limited to compliance with commercial design standards, parking, landscaping, infrastructure, etc. TNG: Who would pay for the reconstruction? Daschel: As far as I know, this is a privately funded project. The property owner is Allen Black, the Crab Pot’s owner.

Volunteers sought for fall Chinook program
has already seen the runners “put forth an honest effort in the desire to get better.” When can local running fans see some of this? “We have just one home meet, on October 19,” Schroeder said. The invitational nature of cross-country at 3A means, however, that the meets can include runners from all OSAA designations, 1A (smallest schools) to 6A. For example, Taft’s recent invitational at Wilsonville included some of the best runners in the state, he said. The home meet in the middle of October will be a shorter, two-mile tune-up for the district competition, Schroeder said, and it will be “spectator-friendly.” Much of that race will be visible from the Voris Field seating area. “We have new uniforms,” he smiled, “bright orange with black Tiger stripes on the side—you can easily find us in a race.”

So Schroeder is in the Taft 7-12 building daily, which he says is important for keeping up with his runners. “Cross-country is relation-based,” the coach says. “Being in the school allows me to build that relationship with the runners.” Schroeder came from Portland to Lincoln City last fall, following coaching experience at Clackamas Community College. He did his college running at Eastern Oregon University and was a high-school runner in Milwaukee. “I love the sport,” he said. He praised his team’s makeup: “In general these are really good kids with great personalities.” He said he

Young football fans will have the opportunity to exhibit their football skills when the Lincoln City Community Center hosts an NFL Punt, Pass & Kick competition from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10 at Taft 7-12 (on the mesa, next to Voris Field). The competition is free and open to boys and girls ages 6-15.
The NFL Punt, Pass & Kick football competition allows youngsters to showcase their talents in punting, passing and kicking with scores based on distance and accuracy. Voices of the Community Support for Council Candidates For the last 10 years VRDs have been the focal point of discussion for our City council. As citizens of this City we have so many needs that have gone unanswered; workforce housing, living wage jobs, better schools, homeless shelter, drug and alcohol rehab etc. When the council gets close to a solution we have three people, John Skipper, Ross Smith and Jerry Warner who have taken it upon themselves to file multiple initiative petitions which takes staff time away from City business. They brought lawsuits against the City because they did not like the VRD regulations that a citizen advisory group spent years putting together. It is election season and our boys are at it again; they have sent out a letter asking outof-town owners to change their voting address and send money to their PAC to support three builder/handymen under the ruse of supporting local business. Instead I support Diana Hinton, Ward1, Riley Hoagland Ward 2, and Judy Casper Ward 3. Diana and Judy have owned VRDs. Diana has been president of the Roads End Improvement Association; Judy was been president of the Nelscott Association for 10 years. Diana and Riley are currently on the Planning Commission, Riley is Vice Chair, Judy formerly served on the Planning Commission. These three are local citizens that care about our community not just about money being made off of VRDs. It is time we send a message. United Way is granting a two-year, $50,000 award to support and expand the Family Promise of Lincoln County’s “Strengthening Families” program. The “Breaking the Cycle of Childhood Poverty” (BCCP) funding cycle in Lincoln County supports long-term preventative work to stop inter-generational poverty by creating cycles of family stability. BCCP’s goals are greater school readiness, supporting students during school transitions, workforce readiness for teens, and financial literacy for families. New Bright Horizons fall series FOR THE NEWS GUARD
Bright Horizons Therapeutic Riding Center announces new classes for their 10-week Fall Series starting Sept 11 thru Nov 19. The following classes are now being offered: Therapeutic Riding Mounted horseback riding intended for any person with a special need or disability. Lessons are adapted to fit the needs of the client by utilizing specially trained horses, volunteers, and adaptive equipment as needed. Clients focus on learning riding skills, and the Instructor incorporates their school and/or life goals into the lesson by using activities to target the goals. Some common goals are developing balance and core strength, increased focus, motor planning, problem solving skills, independence, and self-confidence. Interactive Vaulting Often equated to gymnastics on horseback, vaulting allows riders to perform movements on the back of a horse while also focusing on the interactions between the vaulters, horse and instructor. Each client in a group works at his/ her own level. Some physical benefits of Interactive Vaulting are core strength, increased balance and flexibility, gross and fine motor skills. While not on the horse, clients practice skills such as patience, following directions, multistep tasks, and focus. There is a lot of interaction between the clients, as well as between the clients and the horse, which fosters work on empathy, encouragement of other clients and horse, and teamwork. Equine Facilitated Learning and Psychotherapy Promotes personal growth and development of communication and through activities and interactions on and around the horses. These private classes can be tailored for a person, a family, or a group working on mental health, emotional, or social goals. These are generally ground-based (not riding the horse) activities that help the person, family or group gain insight about themselves or others. Horses are sentient beings that have thoughts and feelings, and will interact with the clients based on how the clients are acting and feeling. EAL helps clients deal with many life goals such as self-awareness, setting boundaries, dealing with stress and anxiety, and interpersonal communication. This alternative therapy can be short or long term, often times helping people not making progress with
