A new national fast food restaurant will soon take shape on the property along the Columbia River Highway adjacent to the new Grocery Outlet Bargain Market in St. Helens. The restaurant, Popeyes, specializes in fried chicken. “Permitting has been issued, so they have the green light to start working,” St. Helens City Planner Jacob Graichen told The Chronicle. A community celebration honoring Clatskanie Middle/ High School (CMHS) girls basketball and softball teams planned late last summer, then postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, is now scheduled for Nov. 26. “The girls Tiger basketball team has won the state 3A title three times in a row and the girls Tiger softball team has won the state 3A title two times in a row, and we want to recognize these athletes,” Linda Blodgett, one of the celebration organizers said in announcing the original celebration.

movie fame, selling spicy, New Orleans-style chicken. As of 2020 Popeyes has 3,451 restaurants, which are located in more than 46 states and the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and 30 countries worldwide, according to Wiki-
pedia. The closest Popeyes to St. Helens are in Southwest Washington and one is located along the I-5 corridor between Portland and Salem in Oregon. The Chronicle has reached out to the owners of the St. Helens Popeyes franchise for

complex, and the Grocery Outlet. The property was formally known as the Violette’s Villa Mobile Home Park,” Graichen said. Based on city records, Graichen said the old mobile home park on that property was there as early as the late 1940’s. “It was a subject of code enforcement in the early 2000’s and it was about 10 years ago or so any remaining structure was removed,” he said. “Once Popeye’s is completed, it will be a completely redeveloped site.” According to the Popeyes national website, Alvin C. Copeland Sr., opened Chicken on the Run in the New Orleans suburb of Arabi, in 1972, serving traditional Southern-fried chicken. After several months of lackluster performance, he reopened the restaurant as Popeyes after Popeye Doyle of The French Connection

Not letting the pandemic stop the effort to recognize the teams, Blodgett notified The Chief about the new celebration planned for the day after Thanksgiving. “It is a big deal in Clatskanie for our girls to win the championships,” she said. “The community wanted to rally around these girls and tell them how proud we are.” According to CMHS Athletic Director Ryan Tompkins, the girls softball team, led by then Coach Kevin Sprague, won the 3A titles in 2021 and 2019. The CMHS girls basketball team, led by then Coach John Blodgett, took 3A state tiles in 2020-2021, 2020-2019 and 2019-2018. “It has been a community effort all along with huge crowds at the games,” Blodgett said. “It was fun for the community to watch them. It became a community event and people started following them and supporting them.” Blodgett said the celebration is now planned for 6 p.m. Nov. 26, at the Clatskanie Middle/High School Commons, 471 Bel Air Drive in Clatskanie. The free event includes dessert, hot cider and coffee provided by school alumni and team supporters. “One of the reasons we are doing it now is that some of the players have been off at college and they will be back in the community Thanksgiving week,” she said. “We wanted to make sure they were here for the celebration.” Signs promoting the celebration are expected to be posted at each end of the city prior to the celebration. The signs were a project of the alumni and team supporters. Clatskanie Mayor Bob Brajcich and the former team coaches are scheduled to speak at the celebration.

PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT: Marshland Road land acquisition to protect fish and wildlife in western Oregon The Bonneville Power Administration is proposing to fund the Columbia Land Trust to purchase the Marshland Road property, a 532-acre parcel of land located about four miles northwest of Clatskanie in Columbia County, Oregon. Once the purchase is complete, BPA would hold a conservation easement to permanently protect, mitigate and enhance the property for fish and wildlife habitat.
Building Bridges to Self Sufficiency
Funding the purchase of the property would support the ongoing mitigation efforts for the effects of the Federal Columbia River Power System on fish and wildlife in the main stem of the Columbia River and its tributaries pursuant to the Pacific Northwest Electric Power Planning and Conservation Act of 1980. This acquisition would support the conservation of listed species in the 2020 Endangered Species Act. Information describing BPA’s environmental review requirements under the National Environmental Policy Act is available at www.bpa.gov/efw/Analysis/ CategoricalExclusions/Pages/2021.aspx. A map and fact sheet mailed to local area landowners will be available at www.bpa.gov/efw/FishWildlife/Land/Pages/LandAcquisition-Announcements.aspx once the transaction closes.
