Prepare for November general election T
he presidential general election is Tuesday, Nov. 3. The last day for new Oregon voters to register to vote for the election is Tuesday, Oct. 13. Oregon is Vote-By-Mail. You do not need to request an Absentee Ballot unless you will not be at your home address between Oct. 14 and Nov. 3. Check the status of your voter registration now with the county clerk or online at www.oregonvotes. gov – My Vote. Ballots cannot be forwarded. The county clerk’s office starts addressing envelopes for insertion ahead of deadlines, so the sooner you update the more likely you will receive your ballot timely. Ballots will be mailed to all local active registered voters beginning Oct. 14. If you have not received
a ballot by Oct. 23, call the county clerk’s office. Voted ballots are due in the County Clerk’s office or in an Official Ballot Drop Box by 8 p.m. Election Day, Nov. 3. Postmarks do not count. Vote early. You do not have to wait until Election Day to vote. If you are concerned with mailing your ballot back through the Postal Service or if you wait until the last week before the election to vote, use an Official Ballot Drop Box. Do not mail after Tuesday, Oct. 27 – Use an Official Ballot Drop Box. If you have questions or concerns, call the County Clerk’s Office at 503-8423402 for an official answer. County sheriff candidates square off in open forum T

illamook County Republican Central Committee hosted Thursday, Sept. 3, a candidate open forum for Tillamook County Sheriff candidates Gordon McCraw and Josh Brown. Because of the number of attendants, the forum was moved outside to comply with COVID-19 guidelines. McCraw is the Tillamook County emergency manager, weather forecaster and lieutenant on the sheriff’s force. He was in the Navy for 20 years. He moved to Tillamook from New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. McCraw worked part time in emergency management and part time on patrol at the sheriff’s office. He was made administrative lieutenant four years
ago. “I have a lot of experience in emergency management,” McCraw said. McCraw said he spent the past year working on emergencies such as the Manzanita tornado, flooding, cyber attack of the county and COVID-19. Brown said he was born and raised in Tillamook and has raised four children here. “I’m also part of the fair board, which is a very involved position,” Brown said. “I currently serve as the vice president of that board.” Brown is also a volunteer youth baseball coach. He started his law enforcement career in 2004 as a volunteer. He was a contract deputy for the first four years and then moved back to regular patrol.

County enforces no parking along Whiskey Creek, Cape Lookout roads Hilary Dorsey Staff Writer The Tillamook County Board of Commissioners agreed during a meeting Wednesday, Sept. 2, to enforce no parking along Whiskey Creek Road and Cape Lookout Road within the boundary of Cape Lookout State Park. The county also extended the local state of emergency until Nov.
3, unless extended by the board. Commissioner Mary Faith Bell said an influx of visitors have been visiting Cape Lookout State Park. When the day use area is full, people are parking along the side of the road. There have been all kinds of destruction, dumping of garbage and human feces. “I talked to the sheriff about it and the sheriff was supportive,” Bell said of the enforcement. “Chris Laity from public works is also supportive.” The county is able to enforce no parking along the roads in the local state of emergency. State parks will be enforcing this and writing tickets. “Every time we close a spot, it’s like a balloon squeezing,” Commissioner Bill Baertlein said.
“Hopefully this will take some pressure off our state parks and try to keep some of our landscape halfway sanitary.” Commissioner David Yamamoto said if the state of emergency continues after Nov. 3, Tim Carpenter, Netarts-Oceanside Fire District chief, needs to be in the discussion, as the fire district receives many of the emergency calls at Cape Lookout. The district is also in possession of many of the county’s road signs. “One of the issues is this is a long, long area along Cape Lookout,” Yamamoto said. “We don’t have all the signs to do what we need to do.” Send comments to: headlightreporter@countrymedia.net
n Forum “During my entire time in law enforcement, I’ve logged over 1,570 training hours, specific to my duties,” Brown said. “In 2012, I transferred to the patrol division, which is where I currently serve.” Community input is critical to the sheriff’s office
success, Brown added. It is his goal to create opportunities for the community to interact with the sheriff’s office on multiple levels. A citizen asked if Gov. Kate Brown issued an executive order to take firearms away, if the candidates would comply. Brown said he would not take them away. McCraw added that the sheriff’s office cannot be the mask police and they won’t be the gun police.
A citizen asked if there were riots in Tillamook County, would the sheriff’s office deputize legal citizens. “If what is going on in our community exceeds what the sheriff’s office has, I would,” Brown said. “There are a lot of good people in this community who are ready to help.” McCraw said the reality is it would be very risky to deputize people without
training. He would try to get help from surrounding areas and bring in additional officers from other places. Tillamook County citizens will vote for the next Tillamook County sheriff in the Nov. 3 general election.

County officials announce burning ban DAMAGE CONTROL Campfires included
As of noon September 7, 2020, there is a full burn ban in effect, this includes all campfires. This ban will include all State Parks property including the beach, all campgrounds in the forest areas and residential campfires. This ban will be in effect until 12:00 am on September11th,
2020. The ban will be reevaluated late on September 10th, 2020 to determine if it needs to be extended. This ban is due to the extreme weather forecast for this week. If you have any questions please contact your local Fire agency, ODF or Oregon State Parks.
Officials take measures to control parking, trash Visitor traffic on Oregon’s north coast has spiked to extraordinarily high levels in August, causing problems with parking congestion and trash. The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department is working with other state and local agencies to create a safer, more enjoyable experience for visitors. • Designate safer, legal parking options and advise drivers to keep traveling if
parking lots are full. With support from ODOT, more than a dozen new advisory and “No parking” signs will be installed along U.S. 101, • Increase restroom and trash services where money and labor are available, • Step up enforcement, ticketing unsafely parked cars and calling for tows at the owner’s expense, where needed. “If you love the coast,
show it,” says Lisa Sumption, OPRD director. “Take care of it and yourselves with some very simple steps.” • Only parking in designated stalls, • Bypassing full parks and going someplace else, • Packing out anything brought in and leaving no trash, • Using restrooms before arriving or after leaving. • Visiting mid-week early in the day.
Register to vote at the Tillamook Pioneer Museum Saturday
A nonpartisan, registerto-vote event will take place inside the Tillamook County Pioneer Museum, Saturday, September 12, 2020, from 10am to 4pm. Volunteers will be there to assist and answer questions (masks are required in the museum and social distancing will be facilitated). This year is the 100th Anniversary of white women’s right to vote. The helpful suffragettes outside will guide you to the correct location. • If you are not a registered Oregon voter, this is

Windows were left smashed Thursday, Sept. 3, at the Tillamook Transit Center. Around 8 p.m. Sept. 3, Jason Boyar, 48 years old, did not have the fare to ride the bus to Netarts and refused to ride. “After the bus left, he was upset so he smashed the windows,” Tillamook Police Chief Terry Wright said. At least one set of doors and several windows were smashed, Wright said. Boyar left the scene but was located right away and interviewed. Wright said the case will be referred to the District Attorney’s Office. Because of COVID-19 restrictions for the county jail, Boyar was not booked. At the July 21 special session, the vote was two Yes, one No, one Abstention (a No) and one Recusal (Paul Daniels who was still able to be seated on the Council while the Recall vote was certified by Tillamook County election officials). The motion actually failed and the application should have been denied. However, the vote was quickly and incorrectly assessed by City Manager Geoff Wullschlager as a three Yes vote majority. There should not have been a re-vote. Since it was, it allowed time for Mayor Riggs, Paul Daniels and Wullschlager to find someone who could be appointed to Daniels now vacant Council position, and who could reportedly be counted on to vote Yes to get the three votes necessary to approve Daniels’ project. Although Daniels was recalled by voters, he was

Judith Parker serves on the Garibaldi Planning Commission with distinction. Remember her name. During the August 24, 2020 City Council’s special session, the first issue to unfold was a Council vote to overturn the Planning Commission’s decision to deny an application for a 66-unit apartment complex sponsored by developer Paul Daniels and his investors. The Council had to take a “re-vote” on a July 21 motion to remand the matter back to the Planning Commission as Mayor Judy Riggs called on them to provide clarification on the criteria for their decision. The commissioners had indeed clearly provided their reasons in a Final Report to City Council, but it was not the decision Judy Riggs and Paul Daniels
allowed to be considered a candidate for a Planning Commission vacancy. He was not nominated by any Council member, including his friend and new city councilor Gaylord Forsman, as there was a long silence of waiting on the Zoom meeting. What happened? Judith Parker, speaking as a private citizen, told Council members that as the only woman on the Commission, she would not feel comfortable with Daniels on the panel. Her words echoed the sentiment brought about in the main issue of the Daniels’ Recall petition: ‘accosting’ Garibaldi resident Paula Tucker and angrily called her a “bad name” as witnessed by Fire Chief Jay Marugg and myself. This behavior was unbecoming and disturbing for an elected official and many residents agreed. Kudos to Judith Parker for supporting Paula Tucker

t is no secret that Tillamook County residents love their books. Before COVID hit the world, our checkout statistics were quite impressive for a county our size, and our libraries were bustling hubs of their communities. That came to a screeching halt when the virus forced us to close our doors earlier this year. But guess what? Tillamook County Library adapted quickly to that forced change by adding greatly to our online digital offerings…and our patrons LOVED having so much more to choose from! We raised the checkout limits and added more e-books, e-audiobooks, downloadable and streaming movies, TV shows… and even e-magazines. The statistics were stunning. Comparing this July to July of 2019, we checked out a whopping 53 percent MORE e-materials than we did the previous year! Percentagewise, that even beats out Multnomah County Library that saw a 42 percent increase in their digital checkouts for the and speaking to what so many women want to put an end to. There is a smart young woman, Katie Findling, who is on the November ballot for one of two Garibaldi city councilor posts. She joins Judy Riggs, who did not serve the city well as mayor; Paul Daniels, who Garibaldi City Administration allowed on the ballot via a loophole, and Norm “Bud” Shattuck, who served the city honorably as a councilor and was encouraged to return. Katie will be an excellent addition to a new City Council that will devote itself to the best interests of Garibaldi, hopefully under the leadership of mayoral candidate Tim Hall. We have to restore trust and confidence in City Council and put an end to the self-serving agenda of a few current members and one who was recalled. Our law enforcement officers are under attack. One only need turn on the news or read the newspaper to see it. While it is easy to dismiss these attacks as Portland’s problem, the hate of our first responders by extremists is evident here on the coast, as well. At an anti-police demonstration in Seaside some time ago, we saw their message out in full force. I will give credit where credit is due; their actions remained peaceful and they

same time period. With stay-at-home orders in place, many people were at home with increased time to read, listen and watch TV. Also, since people could not drop in at their well-loved physical branch libraries, our virtual library suddenly became more enticing. People needed their books, pandemic or not! It became obvious to us that it was especially important for our patrons to stay connected to literature as a way to escape the realities the world was handing us. So, what are people checking out? A lot of everything! Of course, people are still after the blockbusters and bestsellers, but there are some unexpected trends that have evolved. We are noticing more self-help and howto books being requested. People are taking advantage of the downtime to improve
their minds, their bodies, and their general outlook on life. Another trend has been toward more comedy selections being checked out. It seems a lot of people are feeling the need to find more reasons to laugh. Looking toward the future, we want you to know we are working hard to get a plan approved to reopen all of our libraries so you can once again browse our shelves in-person. One thing that would help that effort is to hear what suggestions you might have about how we can improve the Tillamook County Library. You can voice your opinion by filling out our annual survey (link below). I just took the survey myself and it took me just over four minutes to complete. FENCEPOSTS raffic alert! The bridge over the Tillamook River (the first bridge you come to as you turn left off Bayocean Road onto Highway 131 to head into Tillamook) will close intermittently next week, from Sept. 14 through Sept. 18, during the hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for the Oregon Department of Transportation to do some urgent repairs to wood pilings. She advertised a look at “Ginger and the Naked Ladies” on Nextdoor and eight curious neighbors showed up. It turns out ginger is the spice plant ginger, and the naked ladies are amaryllis belladonna. Spike said she originally got the amaryllis bulbs from Sonya Thompson. Amaryllis belladonna is a plant that sprouts leaves in the late winter, dies back, and then “snakeheads” appear after the ground is bare. These

What a wonderful vacation! Kin and I met our sweet daughter Marilyn and lovable son-in-law Lee for what I call “camping in the boondocks”; no phone, newspapers, water, and no sewer hookups “boondocks camping”. Our daughter and husband are well equipped for this wilderness camping. We could not have a campfire, but dinners were prepared in what I call a “trough” filled with charcoal. All cooking was done in a cast iron dutch oven. Lee and Marilyn do not settle for hot dogs and beans….oh no! We had tamale pie, biscuits and gravy, lasagna, and more. I had baked all of the desserts ahead of the trip, but I’m sure they could manage that as well in
the dutch oven. For some reason our daughter, Marilyn Jo, and our son Matt (Feb. 1967-Sept. 2018) can cook anything over wood or charcoal. Matt would send us photos of meat he was preparing to cook over hickory. Matt and Marilyn slicing, dicing, marinating, and cooking in the same kitchen at the same time, was a dangerous place, but the most entertaining place to be on any given holiday. I am notoriously known for my lack of cooking skills. I think that motivated them to become great survivalist chefs (LOL). Anyway, the camping trip was wonderful. Hearing the “nothingness” at night was my favorite thing….well until I heard the rustling in the bushes and the snap of a twig in the black of night. Who needs scary stories around the campfire? Not me! As David mentioned, the Pearl and Oyster Music Festival was postponed and rescheduled for August 20-

After touring the gardens, Kathy Burke let the group peek at an artistic project she is undertaking in the cabin she and her husband, Kevin, are building. It is a cob wall behind the woodstove. Cob construction uses hands and feet to form lumps of earth mixed with sand and straw. It’s an unusual look and will be one of the outstanding features of the Burkes’ little get-away. There was a report on Nextdoor, our neighborhood social media site, that a household had its vehicles rummaged through. The vehicles’ doors and trunks had been opened
and then not closed all the way. Fortunately, nothing was stolen, but these good neighbors are reminding all of us to take safety precautions. Just a reminder that open burning is now closed by the Oregon Department of Forestry. Restrictions usually end in early October after autumn’s first soaking rain. Beach fires on the sand and recreational fires are still allowed. If you are doing a summer trimming, pruning or tree removal project, there is still a way to clean up the mess. You may dump yard debris at the transfer station on Eckloff Road if
you have a voucher. Free vouchers may be picked up at the Department of Forestry or at the main Tillamook fire station; Cape Meares station 73 also has a small number available. This is a safe and inexpensive way to deal with a pesky problem during the summer months. We missed seeing friends and neighbors over Labor Day; the usual Cape Meares end-of-summer potluck and festivities were canceled due to COVID-19. We’ll have to double up on the fun in 2021. ugust LeRoy Davidson was born June 30, 1927 in Nehalem, Oregon to Carl and Esther (Crown) Davidson and passed away August 28, 2020 in Nehalem, Oregon at the age of 93. LeRoy married Dorothy Walker on August 25, 1956
in Stevenson, Washington and was married for 64 years. LeRoy lived his entire life in Nehalem. He drove a log truck for 50 years and after he retired, he drove a dump truck for awhile. LeRoy enjoyed fishing, hunting and clam digging with friends and family. He also enjoyed working in his yard, mowing and pruning shrubs. LeRoy is survived by his wife Dorothy Davidson, 3 children, Dennis LeRoy Davidson, Debby L Davidson and Daryl Davidson. 8 grandchildren, Josh, Andy, Ivan, Willie, Brian, Kellyn, Carrson and Andrea Davidson. 1 great grandchild, Ellie Davidson. arbara Jean Johnston was born on September 30, 1943 in Baker City,
OR to Wayne and Nellie Peters. She passed away in McMinnville, OR on August 29, 2020. Barbara is survived by her daughters Diana Ferrari of Hoschton GA. and Tonya Johnston of McMinnville, OR. Two sons, Troy Clark of Spokane, WA. and Jimmy Johnston of Aumsville, OR. Eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. A private service was held at Bay City IOOF cemetery.

ucy was born August 17, 1921 in Cleveland, OK to William Crider and Eva (Hopkins) Crider and peacefully passed away on August 6th (just 11 days shy of her 99th birthday) after being lovingly cared for by the Staff at The Griffin House for the last four years. She married Carl Oliver Warren on December 9, 1939 and they raised three children. After Carl’s death in June 1972, Lucy was married to Jonathan James Henson from April 1976 to January 2000. Lucy and Carl moved to Tillamook, Oregon in 1951 where Lucy worked at the US Naval Base until she went to work at Christensen Meat Company in the mid 1950’s. She became known as “Lucy the Sausage Maker”.
After Christensen’s shut down, she worked at the same plant for Ed Nelson Meat Co. Customers in Alaska would send down their frozen meat for her to make their sausage. She finished her working career at GEM Custom Cutting, retiring in 1983. In her earlier years she enjoyed bowling in league and traveling to tournaments. In her later years she enjoyed contributing to the financial success of Chinook Winds and Spirit Mountain. Lucy was predeceased by her two husbands, Carl Warren and Jim Henson, and granddaughter Richelle Gollon. Plus, her beloved dachshund Ginger. Lucy is survived by her two daughters: Betty Jean Schmader and Judy (Henry) Gollon and one son: Bill (Kathy) Warren; two step-daughters: Colleen (Roland) Sheldon and Marlys Swank.12 grandchildren: Jim Schmader, Lisa Gosiaco, Mike Schmader, Robbie Warren, Becki Bachmeier, Matthew Warren, Tamera Leith, LeAnn Parker, Jodi Warren, Kevin Smith and Scott Swank . She is also survived by 29 great grandchildren and 19 great great grandchildren. Out of 11 brothers and sisters, Lucy is survived by one brother, Robert Crider in Texas and one sister, Donna McAlister in Oklahoma. No formal services will be held at this time, a memorial will be planned on what would have been her 100th birthday next year. She will always be remembered for her feisty attitude, her love of family and her fabulous biscuits.

lara was born February 10, 1921 in Upper Lake California to Lemuel and Minnie Mae Apple. Clara died August 26th, 2020 at the age of 99. Clara was the youngest of five children. Bertha, Luretta, Lemuel, and Walter. All preceded her in death, Clara also had a sister Elsie May who died at 11 months old when she was crushed by a horse drawn wagon. The family moved to Oregon
about 1925 to the Sandlake area. Clara met Vern Long in 1937 at a dance and married in 1939, they were divorced in the mid 60’s. Clara married Kenny Zemlicka in 1973. They were married until his passing in 1996. Clara lived in Albany, OR after Kenny passed until March 2015 when she moved to Puyallup, WA where she lived with her daughter in law until her passing. Clara had two children Shirley and Gary and a grandson, Brian who all preceded her in death. Clara is survived by her daughter in law Julie Long, grandsons Gary John and Eric. Granddaughter Katie, several nephews, nieces and great grandchildren. A graveside memorial will be held at the Oretown cemetery Sept. 12, at 11 a.m.
Thomas Ralph Mills April 8, 1949 - Aug. 25, 2020

homas R Mills, 71, of Bay City passed away on August 25th at his home. Tom was born at Tillamook hospital to Alfred and J. Lucile Mills (Bradham) on April 8th 1949. He went to school in Tillamook and graduated from Tillamook high school in 1967. After taking some college courses, Tom enlisted in the Navy on July 1st 1969 and served until June 14th 1972. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War and was very proud of his service to his country. Upon his discharge he entered the Navel Reserves, and subsequently the National Guard. He married Paula Rhoades on November 3rd 1979 at the Church of the Nazarene in Tillamook. The two of them purchased their home in Bay City in 1981, where they raised their family. Tom worked a variety of jobs, spending a number of years at Publishers
Paper Mill (Now Hampton Lumber) in Tillamook but his favorite job was as a small parts manager for SCS Interactive. Tom was an avid hunter / fisherman. He also enjoyed bowling league, shooting pool whenever he had the chance and casino trips with Paula. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles where he enjoyed playing Texas Hold ‘em. Above all though his greatest joy came from spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was a family man and animal lover through and through. Tom is preceded in death by his parents Alfred Mills and J. Lucile Mills (Bradham), and his sister Patricia (Parker) Tom is survived by his loving wife of 40 years Paula (Rhoades). His Daughter Amee, her husband Mike and their 5 children Ema, Eddison, Everhett, Brooklynne and Bryar. His Son Kevin. His Sister Jeanne (DeSwart) and her husband Jack. His Brother Bill and wife Theresa. His Brother John, as well as countless nieces and nephews, and of course his beloved “Penny dog” Due to Covid restrictions, there will be no services at this time.

onald Vernon Schweizer was born to John and Rose Schweizer on April 10,1942 in Tillamook, Oregon. He passed away on August 31, 2020 at home in Idaville from Alzheimer’s. Ron graduated from Tillamook High School in 1960 and was well-known and loved by many. He worked for 35 years for Pacific Seafood in Portland and Bay City as Production Manager. Ron also served for many years as an elder in the Tillamook congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses and
loved his God Jehovah. He is survived by his loving wife Ly who he married on May 5th, 1999. He is also survived by sons Dennis Schweizer (Sally), of Washington, Bon of California and Ben of Portland, four grandchildren, Caleb and Luke Schweizer and Michael and Jordan Pinnak. Also he is survived by his sister Marlene of Washington and nephew Dan Schweizer (Tammy) of Tillamook. Ly would like to thank the many friends who visited and helped in many ways during this difficult time and extend special thanks to Frank Dulcich of Pacific Seafood for all the support and care he provided. As of Friday, Sept. 4, Tillamook County has 36 positive confirmed cases. Emergency Manager Gordon McCraw announced the two new cases at a sheriff’s candidate forum Thursday, Sept. 3. “Effective today, we’re two higher on the COVID cases,” McCraw said in the meeting. “Two more people were reported today.” According to Oregon Health Authority (OHA), the county has 40 confirmed and presumptive positive cases, zero deaths and 2,685 people who have tested negative for COVID-19, as of Sept. 4. As of Aug. 29, Oregon’s cumulative positivity rate is 4.6 percent of people tested, OHA reported. This is lower than the national average of 9 percent. “A declining positive rate shows that Oregonians’ efforts to use face
coverings, physically distance, and avoid gatherings is helping to slow the spread of COVID-19,” OHA’s weekly report stated on Aug. 31. As of Sep. 4, there are 27,601 confirmed COVID-19 cases in Oregon, 475 deaths and 26,268 positive tests. The number of people who have been tested in Oregon is 575,596. aren LeAnne Derungs was born January 19, 1942 in Eugene, Oregon to Frank and Lillian (Parker) Kudrna and passed away surrounded by her loving family on Sept. 2, 2020 in Tillamook, Oregon. Karen was 78. Karen was raised in Woods, Oregon. She moved and graduated from Highland High School in California in 1959 then moved to the Tri-Cities, Richland, Washington and later to Sacramento, California. She was married to Ron Moore and had two daughters. They divorced and Karen moved back to Tillamook County and married James Derungs in
1976. While in Tillamook, Karen worked at Kimmel’s Gift store for several years. Karen is survived by her husband James Derungs of Tillamook, OR. Two daughters; Becky Moore of Tillamook, OR. and Nikki McDonald (Kelly) of Tillamook, OR. Two step daughters, Kristi McDaniel (Cliff) of Tillamook, OR. and Keri Hardin (Marty) of Mt. Angel, OR. Five grandchildren; Adam Schwend, Dustin McDonald, MacKenzie Schmitz, Andi Schwend and Alex Schwend. Two step grandsons; C.J. Hardin and Karl Hardin. One sister; Kathleen Shaw and one brother Mark Kudrna along with fifteen great-grandchildren. Karen is preceded in death by her sister Vicki Craft and one brother Jerry Craft. left in low places along the shoreline. These pools are visible when the tide is low and covered with water when the tide is high. Many plants and animals live in tide pools which are found all around the world. Wherever there’s a rocky seashore, there are tide pools. Including here in Tillamook County! Life in tide pools is dynamic and amazing. When you venture out to the rocky shore, look for layers of habitats. Check out the life living at the edge of the sand and then scan your eyes up along the rocks. The first thing you may notice is how much life is living in these areas! The rich diversity that can be found is astounding. Next, you will notice that the community of animals and plants change as you move from the wet, low areas to the higher (and drier) ones. The intertidal area is divided into different regions: the splash zone, high tide zone, mid tide zone, and low tide zone. Animals and plants living in the splash zone only need a spray of water to survive. Here you will find tiny acorn barnacles, limpets, and snails. This is the opposite of the low tide zone, a place that is typically under water except during the lowest tides. In these locations, you will find different algaes, sea slugs, sponges, and more. Maybe the most obvious break is between the low-tide zone and the mid-tide zone. The mid-tide zone is home to mussels, and there is a clear line that forms here. Mussel habitat is bound by the high tide zone, which is too dry, and the range of sea stars(a major predator) in the low tide zone. When visiting the beach and tide pools, follow these easy steps to keep you, your group and the plants and animals in these areas safe. Know where to go! Do a little research to find out which beaches offer the best tide pools for your group. Not all tide pool areas are easy to get to. Some locations have tide pools in areas that get cut off as the water rises and starts to flood the beach during high tide. This can create a dangerous situation for you

and your group. Know when to go! Go during a nice low tide. When I go out with my family or take out groups to learn more about tide pools, I aim for 1 to 2 hours before the predicted negative low tide (-0.8 feet or lower). Check a tide book or use any of a number of great online tools to find out when the tide will be low on your favorite beach. Every location is different, but the lower the tide the better the experience. The best times to tide pool usually occur in the late spring and summer months. Keep an eye on the ocean! Even when the tide is predicted to be very low, many things can change the water level on the beach. Local and offshore weather can affect how flooded the beach is. At any time, large waves can surprise you on the beach. Always face the ocean and watch out for sneaker waves. Watch your step! Step carefully when exploring. The rocks are full of living plants and animals. Walk on bare sand or rocks when investigating the tide pools. Remember to protect yourself while exploring. Avoid bare feet, flips flops or shoes that easily come off. Opt for something sturdy with a closed toe and good tread. Remember, your feet will likely get wet. Be gentle! I encourage people to explore and feel the tide pools but to touch gently using 1 or 2 fingers. Never poke or try to pull animals off the rock. This may hurt or kill the animal. Some animals are territorial and a rival may not be
