efore finding himself the owner of two camels, John Bonander had a 10-year career of selling computers to small and medium businesses in Arizona. He took a sabbatical and came up to Oregon to help a friend who had a private exotic animal farm. He ended up going back to his job. “I sat down in my cube. It’s big, big room full of a bunch of cubes where you know people are getting their life sucked out of them, no windows, and maybe some making good money. But I sat there maybe an hour before I wrote my notice,” he said. “That was 14 years ago now. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I’d ever be doing this. Never, ever, ever. I love it.” From there, 13 years ago, he decided to get two camels of his own. “It’s just what I fell into … dumb luck,” he said. “I’ve always liked animals, but I grew up in the South Side of Chicago. But I like it and I like learning.” He acquired Frank and Calvin from Knoxville, Tennessee. They are both geldings and have always been together. He said the climate here is great because it doesn’t get too cold. But even in the desert it gets cold at night, so they need a good shelter and windbreak. He said they also grow a thick winter coat. He said he doesn’t shave them with clippers, he just brushes them. “They eat alfalfa, but they’ll browse anything. I mean, they’ll go eat blackberries, ferns, you name it,” he said. “They’re like a giant goat.” He usually has a pocket full of alfalfa cubes for treats, but they also like carrots and watermelon. Right now, he just gives rides in the round pen, but for every ride he gives there, he has someone ask him about riding them on the beach. He found a spot with a great view and he has a vision. That vision has amounted to hard labor and long days. But once he has the trails in place, he can lead folks up the trail on the camels, to the perfect spot at sunset. “They can bring wine or whatever they want to do, and I can lead them back down when they’re ready,” he said. Photo by Amber Deyo. people out on a camel long enough, but not too long, he said. “I think it’s gonna be perfect,” he said. One barrier to this at this time is that there’s only one of him and he has two camels to be led. He said a person has to respect that they are handling a large animal that could hurt you. He said they get smarter every year and a person can’t be sheepish in taking care of them. For the outside observer, when they aren’t being ridden, they sit quietly and chew on their cud. And when they are being ridden, they follow Bonander’s lead. He said even after he gets his trail set, he will still do the rides in the corral. He said he only charges $15 for the short ride because he wants the camels to be accessible. “If you’ve got something cool like these guys, you should just share,” he said. He said he thinks there are

camels in every state except Hawaii, and he was required to get a United States Department of Agriculture Exhibitors license for the camels. “If you had a camel in your backyard and that’s all it ever did and you didn’t – not even once - take it to a school, a church, a parade, or anything like that, you wouldn’t need a license,” he said. “But the minute you exhibit it out in the public. You have to have a USDA license.” He said he’s inspected a couple times a year to prove his facilities are up to snuff and his equipment is OK, and he’s following his animal care plan and more. He went to a camel bootcamp where he learned about camels and how to care for them. He said that in fact, camel’s humps are not filled with water as most people seem to think. “I’m pretty sure when we were all young, we all saw this Mickey

Mouse cartoon or something like that with Mickey or Goofy filling up the camel’s hump with water,” he said. “I think that’s where it’s from. Could be wrong, but that got in everyone’s head.” In reality, it’s fat storage and the spot on their body where they store fat. But it’s firm with fat and gristle and connective tissue. A camel’s backbone is straight, he said. This is only his second season in Pacific City, working alongside Green Acres Beach & Trail Rides: Horseback Rides, and he’s working on getting his new vision dialed in for next year, as the weather will be prohibitive to trail building and camel riding before long. Neah-KahNie School District and Nestucca Valley School District plan to begin a comprehensive distance learning model Monday, Sept. 13. Tillamook School District will begin in-person learning Tuesday, Sept. 7. Neah-Kah-Nie School District

Neah-Kah-Nie School District announced Monday, Aug. 30, plans to delay the beginning of the school year to Sept. 13, and will begin with comprehensive distance learning. The district had previously planned for a start of in-person learning to begin Tuesday, Sept. 7. According to a letter to the community from Superintendent Paul Erlebach, the school district’s goal is to transition from comprehensive distance learning to in-person instruction as soon as possible once the data indicates in-person instruction is safe. Extra-curricular activities at the middle and high school are temporarily suspended, as of Aug. 30. On Thursday, Sept. 2, middle school athletes were cleared to begin football practice Sept. 7 and volleyball and cross country on Sept. 13. There were no updates on high school sports as of press time. The school district held a meeting

Wednesday, Sept. 1, via Zoom to discuss the upcoming school year and answer questions from parents, staff and students. Erlebach said he and the principals discussed a return date of Oct. 18, but if the district can transition before that date, they will. Gov. Kate Brown announced a vaccine mandate in August, requiring all K-12 school employees to be fully vaccinated by Oct. 18. “We’re in a pandemic, and with the numbers where they are, that’s why I made the decision,” Erlebach said. A parent asked about testing athletes. Neah-Kah-Nie High School Principal Heidi Buckmaster said OHSU is going to be rolling out a screening program using the PCR test, mostly used for asymptomatic people. Before the roll out, OHSU has to complete a pilot program. Buckmaster offered to volunteer the school for the program. “Any screening/testing that’s go-

ing to happen is still a little bit out,” Buckmaster said. “We have already completed all the registration paperwork required for us to participate in that. All we need is for parents to opt in.” Nestucca Valley School District Nestucca Valley School District announced Thursday, Sept. 2, that the school year will also begin in comprehensive distance learning, due to the COVID-19 spread in the county. The school district had previously delayed the start of the school year to Monday, Sept. 13. Superintendent Misty Wharton stated in a letter to the community that the district would look at data points and consult the Tillamook County Health Department to make a decision about the model of instruction every two weeks.

illamook County Community Health Centers reported during a Tillamook County Board of Commissioners meeting Wednesday, Sept. 1, 81 COVID-19 cases from Friday, Aug. 27, through Sunday, Aug. 29. There were 356 cases in the 14-day case count from Aug. 15 through Aug. 28. Emergency Preparedness Coordinator Ed Colson reported 666 COVID-19 cases from Aug. 1 through Aug. 29. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the county has had 1,441 cases. “We are at 13 confirmed deaths as of this report, 11 being confirmed not vaccinated and two with no vaccine record,” Colson said. “The death toll was five deaths up until July. Since August, that death toll has gone up to 13. Eight deaths in nine days.” The health department reported Thursday, Sept. 2, four new COVID-19 associated deaths, raising the death toll to 17. There are eight confirmed outbreaks in the county and eight pending investigation, Colson added. The public health team is behind on case investigation but is working to catch up. Oregon Health Authority confirmed outbreaks as of Sept. 1 at Tillamook Youth Correctional Facility with 29 cases, Fred Meyer with 25 cases, Stimson Lumber with 18 cases, Tillamook County Creamery Association with 11 cases, Tillamook Country Smoker with eight cases and Tillamook County Transportation District with five cases. “OHA reports that the Delta variant is three times more transmissible than the earlier strains of the virus, causing at least two times more infections,“ Colson said. Colson said one of the best ways to prevent the spread of COVID-19 is the use of masks. Gov. Kate Brown has issued mask mandates for indoor public spaces and most outdoor public settings. “Tillamook County Public Health recommends that individuals take the following precautions to reduce and limit the spread of COVID-19: To follow current mask requirement – wear a mask properly over your nose and mouth – keep six feet of distance from those not in your immediate household, wash your hands frequently, and make a plan to get the COVID-19 vaccine as soon as possible if eligible and not yet vaccinated,” Colson said. The health department has opened a drive-thru testing site from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at the Tillamook County Fairgrounds for those who have symptoms or known exposure. All Adventist Health clinics are available for non-symptomatic COVID-19 testing, typically used for travel requirements, pre-op surgery and more. Rapid testing is available by walk-in appointments for existing patients. For non-existing patients, visit the Adventist Health Tillamook location. Colson said the vaccine is the best tool for protection against the virus. A lot of really cool things have been happening out there with the Near Space Center, timber industry and all of the rental units,” Baertlein said. “That’s why it’s so much fun: You’re juggling so many different things out there.” Stoecker, 63, won a partial, two-year term on the port commission to complete an open Position 3 term that expires in 2023. Stoecker brings more than two decades of experience with governmental budgeting gained during his long career with the City of

Portland parks division. He said he wanted to join the port commission to keep his mind sharp in retirement and to put his budgeting and other management skills to good use for benefit of the local community. “I really like that as port commissioner, I have the ability to make changes where it can make a real impact for the public and for taxpayers. It’s important for me to be able to do that,” Stoecker said. “My goal is to have transparency. I’d also like to see the port open up more recreation opportunities.” Port commissioners are elected to the board by the vote of the people. The fivemember board of commissioners is responsible for setting port policy and budgets at the port, which serves as the core of the region’s industrial economy. The Port of Tillamook Bay covers approximately 1,600 acres, including a 200-acre industrial park, the Tillamook Municipal Airport, the Tillamook Air Museum and the 85-plus miles of railroad right of way ending in Banks.

Man dies in hit and run crash at Fred Meyers Tillamook Police Department responded at 10:59 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 1, to the area of Hwy 101 in front of Fred Meyers to a report of a pedestrian who had been hit by a vehicle that had fled the scene. Upon arrival at 11 p.m., police found a 75-yearold man dead in the roadway. According to the police department, the crime scene was processed with the assistance of the Oregon State Police Reconstruction Team, Tillamook County Sheriff’s Office, Tillamook Fire Department, ODOT, Adventist Health Ambulance,

Tillamook County District Attorney, and the Tillamook County Medical Examiner. Law enforcement was able to locate the male 26-year-old driver of the suspect vehicle who had a friend drive him back down to the crime scene to turn himself in after hearing reports of the incident on his scanner. He has been lodged at the Tillamook County Jail on recommended charges of manslaughter and felony hit and Run. The name of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of the next of kin.

Adventist Health Tillamook offers several updates that increase options for scheduling appointments and decrease the time to see a provider. Primary care appointments can now be scheduled online at any coastal clinic in Tillamook, Pacific City, Lincoln City and Manzanita as well as inland clinics in Sheridan, Vernonia, Hoodland and Estacada. When patients visit the Adventist Health Tillamook website, AdventistHealthTillamook.org, scheduling a primary care appointment online simply requires clicking “Book online” immediately below the photo on the primary care provider of their choice. e held a belated birthday dinner for Steve and Karen Walz the other day. We learned of another birthday baby and added him to the mix: Steve’s younger brother Tim. Tim Walz lives in Northern Calif.; he was up in Oregon for a week or so to help their sister Sherry with estate administration. Work included a lot of yard maintenance, cleaning and sorting items. Tim took some time off to visit Steve and Karen here in Cape Meares. While he prefers the warmer California weather, Tim loved the ocean views and sparsely populated beach, and also had a good time out salmon fishing with his brother. He also liked the lingcod, couscous spinach salad and yellow corn on the birthday menu, as well as the Elvis Presley brownies and ice cream for dessert. Nice to meet more of your relatives, Steve and Karen!

Man, did we have a great day on the bay in late August. The fisherfolk reading this column know that Captain Pete and I have a wooden drift boat. This boat doesn’t draw much water, so we were able to launch at Memaloose despite some low tides. On our first pass, Pete said, “Reel in, we’ll turn around and hook a fish”—and he was right! He hooked one right after our turn at the head of the pool, and soon the 15-lb. Chinook salmon was in our boat. We

were extremely delighted, having missed out on most of the spring run due to surgery/ illness. Pete tagged the fish and we got our lines back in the water. When we reached that same spot about a half hour later, I hooked a fish! Mine was 26 pounds, perhaps bigger to make up for all the fish I didn’t catch last year. We were both fishing ProTrolls with little Mexican hat spinners. But we know what really gave us good luck that day: It would have been the 108th birthday for Harvey Steen, Pete’s dad. Considering Harvey is the one who got Pete hooked on fishing, we know he would have been pleased that we were out catching, not just fishing, that day. We have not been as fortunate with another hunting and gathering activity, and that is razor clamming. Razors have been closed from the Wash.

If a student becomes sick, they will be sent home. “The staff being vaccinated is also comforting,” Shelley said. Like many school districts in Oregon, Tillamook School District is struggling to fill vacant positions and retain staff. Shelley announced that

effective Sept. 1, classified staff members will receive a 10 percent incentive and retention allocation. “This is a one year incentive to assist in filling the number of vacant positions currently being advertised by offering a wage that is competitive given the current economic environment (COVID) and an effort to retain quality staff,” Shelley stated in a letter to staff. The offer will be brought before the board of directors for approval at the Sept. 13 board meeting. Shelley said the school district is scheduled to continue offering extra curricular activities but will be extra cautious for safety.

Students will begin distance learning as an entire day schedule. From Sept. 7 through Sept. 10, the district will communicate with students about new routines, how to pick up a laptop and student teacher assignments. “The number one charge as the chief executive of the school district is to keep students and staff safe,” Wharton stated. “With the current level of spread, and positive test percentage, we cannot keep students safe with in-person instruction.”

ebo Women’s Book Club met last week via Zoom. Besides myself, participants included Melanie Merryman, Rachel Pettit, Nancy Whitehead and Joan WIlke. We discussed “The Snow Child,” a first book by Eowyn Ivey, which was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 2013. Joan checked out Tillamook County Library’s book club kit and led our discussion, Melanie distributed the books and hosted the Zoom meeting. We all enjoyed this page turner which centers on an older couple who’ve settled on the Alaska frontier. They build a snow-child one winter evening, and they discover, the next morning, that she may have come to life. This sweet story makes a great antidote in these troubled times. We plan a book selection evening when the group meets for September. Our Fencepost inbox was inundated with queries into my well being just before and for some time after Hurricane Ida made landfall in New Orleans on Sunday, August 29. I enjoyed a long weekend there with daughter Elise and grandson Logan late in August. Fortunately, we left Louisiana on the twenty

second, we were home with a week to spare before the hurricane hit. Thanks for your concern. Our ongoing warm dry summer, for the third year in a row, is stressing large trees in these parts. I appreciate KTIL airing a piece some weeks ago alerting listeners to the plight of our trees in drought conditions. Since then I have run a hose (at more than a trickle but far less than full force) on each of three large trees in my yard for an hour at a time once a week. Our trees provide oxygen through their leaves, shade, habitat for wild creatures and their roots prevent erosion of our top soil. I’ve lost one large Hemlock to dry summers already. County Public Health is offering free drive-up COVID-19 testing at Tillamook County Fairgrounds from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Free drive-up vaccinations are available there from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The Fairgrounds are east of downtown Tillamook on Third Street. Enter through the gate on 3rd Street by the 4-H dorm building and follow the path to their testing tents. No appointments are required. Testing will be performed while you are in your car. y the end of this year you might be in a new House District, Senate District, or you could even be in Oregon’s brand new sixth congressional district. That’s because the Oregon Legislature will draw new boundaries for political offices in the state. This is required by the Oregon Constitution every 10 years to reflect population changes following the U.S. Census. Legislators on the House and Senate redistricting committees will be hearing from residents across the state starting September 8 to understand how new district lines can best preserve communities with shared common interests. It’s critical that we have as many people participate in the process as possible. Redistricting will determine your ability to be well represented in future elections for the next 10 years. For residents of Congressional District 1, your chance to participate virtually will

be Wednesday, September 8 starting at 8:00am and Thursday, September 9 starting at 5:30pm. For residents of Congressional District 5, the virtual public hearings will take place Thursday, September 9 starting at 1:00pm and Monday, September 13 starting at 8:00am. If you miss these times, anyone can sign up to testify on Monday, September 13 between 1:00pm – 4:00pm and 5:30pm – 8:30pm. his week as Food Roots, one of our Chamber members, announced the addition of two new employees to its staff, our team at the Chamber packaged up two Tillamook Toolkits to send off to their storefront. Chock full of locally sourced goodies, the toolkit serves as our way of welcoming individuals to their new jobs and to our community. The Chamber started sending out the toolkits a few years ago. I find it to be a simple but important tool – no pun intended – helping local businesses retain the talented staff they hire, especially when those employees move to Tillamook from outside our community. Each toolkit includes an assortment if gifts a new employee needs to start off their job on the right foot. As an added bonus, every item in the box comes from one of our Chamber members, so we are able to highlight some

of the amazing resources we have right here in our community. All in all, we consider it a small taste of what makes Tillamook a great place to live, work and play! And we hope it encourages everyone who gets a box to stay in our community a while, so their talent stays local. I don’t want to divulge all of the items, for the sake of maintaining some element of surprise for the recipients. ave you ever tried writing a book? How about a poem? Or maybe even a short story? If you haven’t tried, maybe you should give it a whirl. A long time ago, when I was in second grade, my teacher had us each write an original poem. “Think of your favorite thing, and write a poem about it,” she said. Anyone who knows me will not be surprised that I wrote a little poem about my favorite cartoon character, Snoopy. I thought for a few minutes, then carefully handprinted my eight-line poem on lined paper, and handed it in. The next day, I was surprised to see my poem on the classroom bulletin board, with a big blue ribbon on it! I had won first place on the very first poem I ever wrote! I proudly took my poem and ribbon home and showed my mom, who promptly stuck in on the front of the refrigerator, where all great works of art are posted. This is where my story takes a dark turn. I grew up with five feisty brothers

(and no sisters...my poor mother!) and we were always up to some mischief. The next morning when I came down for breakfast, I found my award-winning poem on the floor...ripped in two! After much household drama that resulted in no one admitting they did it, and EVERYONE getting grounded, we taped the poem back together, and I still have it to this day. But the biggest thing I learned from this turn-of-events is this...I must be really good at writing poems if one of my brothers was jealous enough to tear it apart! As a result, I have been writing poetry ever since. But I can hear some of you now saying you are too old to start writing books. Nonsense! Some of the world’s greatest authors got a very late start in their writing career. Take James A. Michener, for example. You might know his Tales of the South Pacific, which won a Pulitzer Prize and went on to be adapted into a highly successful Broadway musical. He did

not start writing until age 40, but then wrote a book a year for the next 40 years. Laura Ingalls Wilder did not have any writing success until she was 65 years old when Little House in the Big Woods was published. Many of her stories were based on her real-life experiences, so perhaps she needed to live much of her life first before trying to write it down. Toni Morrison was 40 years old when she wrote The Bluest Eye. She continued to write for the rest of her life, eventually winning a Pulitzer Prize and a Nobel Prize in Literature. Mark Twain was 48 when The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn were published. Let’s not forget the J. R. R Tolkien was 45 before he had any success in writing. Then he went on to become the “father” of modern fantasy literature with books like The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy. That should be enough proof that it’s never too late to try your hand at writing what could become the next great novel. If you do get your book published, we would love to have it available for checkout from the Tillamook County Library. And if you are still looking for a topic to write about, I have first-hand experience (and a faded blue ribbon) that proves Snoopy makes an excellent subject.

My neighbor called us and warned us to look around when we pull into our driveway. She was sitting by her window that faces our house and watched a bear walk down our driveway. Those wonderful folks are hosting their “Build-It” With a Lion event again. It will be Saturday, September 18th at 10 am with the Rockaway Beach Lions Club on Zoom. This event is open to kids 4 years and older. If your children want to participate by Zoom, they can pick up their Zoom kits September 17th from 5-7pm at the Lions Clubhouse. There they will get the Zoom link. They will need to have their own hammer, safety glasses, small phillip’s head screw driver and parental supervision. The kits are donated in part by both The Home Depot and the Rockaway Beach Knights Lions. When I was a child, my mom and I watched a train hit a car in Milwaukie. Unfortunately the lady that was in the car did not make it. She had been in a hurry and thought she could beat the train. The train was really moving, she didn’t have a chance. Well,

the train in Rockaway Beach hit a car, but fortunately it was traveling slowly. I believe the folks were okay. Folks that watched it happen said they saw them talking to the police. Whew, they were lucky. So, I wanted to address a few questions that were emailed to me. With Covid, many events in town have been cancelled. The city will be working hard trying to bring as many events as is feasible, as the pandemic recedes. Who knows what next year will bring. I say that life has changed and will continue to change. Change is good. New folks may step forward with new ideas to make new traditions as well as retaining many of the old, and our town will continue to be the best and most fun town to visit or live. We know how to shine! Our town is so much fun. We will all have to be patient, and when things get back to normal, hopefully folks will be ready to step in and help our town ‘ROCK!’ The other question I was asked has to do with the traffic issue on 3rd Avenue by the Lions Club. Well, here goes. It’s a supply matter. They are waiting for the “vault” to be manufactured and delivered. The vault contains the pump, itself and is a specialized item. The city has been told it is a supply matter at the manufacturers end. So, we need to cross our fingers and hope everything falls into place so the road will be back to normal. Boy, Covid has sure messed everybody’s schedules up. Our neighbor’s guests went clamming and we cleaned and froze a bunch of them. Today I am smelling the yummy aroma of clam chowder in my Instant Pot. Yum! “Because when you stop and look around, this life is pretty amazing!” Stay safe my friends. OBITUARIES Dorothy Godett Sept. 27, 1928 - Aug. 26, 2021

D

orothy Shaffer Godett, daughter of Josephine Feiner Shaffer and Louis Shaffer, died on August 26 in Chattanooga, Tenn. Born in Chicago on September 27, 1928, Dorothy moved to Kew Gardens, N.Y. when she was in eighth grade. She attended Queens College, where she majored in sociology. She earned a master’s degree in education from New York University. While earning her master’s, she taught elementary school in Greenwich Village. When she married Norman Ellenberg in 1952, she moved to Long Island, N.Y. and taught kindergarten and first grade. The couple had two daughters, Amy and Rachel,

before divorcing in 1959. In 1965, Dorothy married Harold Godett. In 1969, the family moved to Overland Park, Kan., where Dorothy sold jewelry in a department store and later sold advertising specialties. Dorothy moved to Pacific City in 1990, where she ran the Library Thrift Store for six years and served on the library board. Dorothy was a whiz with words. She loved solving crossword puzzles, mastering games of all kinds, spinning puns, and beating everyone at “Wheel of Fortune” into her 90s. Since 2014 Dorothy lived in Chattanooga with her younger daughter, Rachel Schulson (Henry). Her older daughter, Amy Thurman, lives in Kansas City, Mo. In addition to her daughters, Dorothy is survived by five grandchildren, Niccole Thurman, Monica Thurman, Adrienne Cuff (Dalen), Michael Schulson (Emma Green), and Leah Schulson; and four great-grandchildren, EJ, Levin, Lyra, and Jethro. Donations can be made in Dorothy’s honor to support the Pacific City library.

Beverly JoAnn Pazar July 31, 1936 - Aug. 27, 2021

everly JoAnn Pazar, age 85, passed away peacefully on August 27, 2021 at Life Care Center in Port Orchard, Washington with family by her side. Beverly was born on July 31, 1936 in Willamina, Oregon, daughter of Paul and Melba Yoder. Beverly was a life-long member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, where she never missed a Friday night dance, a monthly auxiliary meeting or any other random event. She loved bowling, potlucks, and driving around in her motorhome even if it

was just a trip to the store and back. She was also a member of TOPS for over 50 years and enjoyed socializing at the weekly weigh-ins. Most of all, Beverly loved her four children (three of whom she adopted) and her seven grandchildren and one great grandchild. She raised the oldest three children with her husband in Tacoma, Washington until he passed in 1988. Shortly after his death she moved to Tillamook, Oregon where she had many cousins, aunts and uncles nearby and raised her youngest son on her own. She returned to the Tacoma area to be near her children in 2014 after her companion of over 20 years, Jim Johansen, passed. She is preceded in death by her mother, father and brother, Kenneth Yoder. She is survived by her four children, Mona Glant, Belfair, WA, Monica Alexander, Yelm, WA, John Pazar, Olympia, WA and Christopher Pazar, Tacoma, WA. She also leaves behind seven grandchildren & one great grandchild.

ertha Victoria KentCrivella born March 7, 1923. On August 30, 2021 she passed in her hometown of Tillamook, Oregon at the age of 98 years old. Bertha was so many things to so many people in her long life. Daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great-great grandmother, aunt, supporter and such a good friend. She held a special place in all our hearts as she simply was easy to love with a huge heart for those lucky enough to be a part of her life. Bertha was born at home to Albert S. Kent and Ina Kent. She was raised on the family berry farm in Monitor, Oregon with her 7 siblings and attended school at Elliott Prairie. As a young woman, Bertha joined her sisters Wilma and Mae in Portland to work in the shipyards. On a visit to Rockaway she met her husband, Paul Crivella. Paul and Bertha were married in Rockaway on February 22,1948 and lived in Brigh-

ton. In 1962 they moved to Tillamook, Oregon and lived for 56 years before Paul’s passing in 2003. The couple had three children together, Sheryl, Jeanne and Philip (deceased at birth). In Bertha’s life she worked hard as a dairy farmer, ran a successful Oregon Journal dealership, worked at Exact Electronics, and had an Oregonian paper route as well as assisted at Jeanne’s pet boutique in Tillamook. In her free time, Bertha loved to be with and enjoy her family the most. She had a much-adored poodle named Princie who could be found beside her at any moment, a loyal sidekick. If she wasn’t home, you could often find her on the road to her next Red Hat event with the Tilly’s Scarlett Divas or going for a drive and traveling with her loved ones. Bertha was preceded in death by her son Philip, husband Paul, siblings Ethel Hackett, Roscoe Kent, Viona Darby, Donald Kent, Wilma Ruhl and Mae Brewer. She is survived by her brother Ray Kent (Marcy), her two daughters Sheryl Johnson (Ed), Jeanne Komlofske (Lloyd), her grandchildren, Grady Johnson (Tami), Torey Johnson, Heidi Emch (David) her 9 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews and extended family members. A celebration of life will be held in her honor Saturday, September 18, 2021 at 1pm at the Eagles Lodge – 209 Stillwell Avenue, Tillamook, OR.

teve Marshall passed away from pancreatic cancer on a “bucket list” trip to Greece, with his beloved daughter by his side. Born in Denver, CO and raised Concord, CA, Steve was predeceased by his father, Howard Marshall, and is lovingly survived by his mother Jeanne Marshall, his daughter Julia Marshall and his siblings Greg, Kent, and Matt Marshall. He will also be deeply missed by his nine nieces and nephews, his close friends, and his former wife, Danielle. Steve was struck with wanderlust at an early age and had traveled the world as a travel professional. He was devoted father, a lover of food and wine, a colorful raconteur, an epic party thrower, and a frequent handy-man helper to anyone in need. Steve never knew a stranger. Once you met him, you knew him forever as a zealous and interesting man.

fre. He and Laurie recently retired after 16 years owning and running Nestucca Valley Sporting Goods in Hebo. He loved fishing and camping. He hoped to travel to Alaska and fish the Crooked River in Oregon. He was known for his music abilities playing bass in Portland Jr. Symphony and several jazz bands around Portland. He was a member of the original Ambrosia band and traveled 2-years across country. He coached baseball and softball with his kids and other youth. Celebration of life September 25th,2021 held at Rhodes pond 5 1/2 miles east of Hebo on Hwy #22. Bring chairs,good memories and funny stories to celebrate Pat’s life.

illiam Donald “Don” Cassady, a beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away peacefully in Vancouver, Washington on August 21, 2021. He was determined to reach his ninety-fourth birthday and did so by one day. Family was by his side as he relaxed to depart on his final adventure. Don had survived cancer twice (prostate and melanoma), and had a TAVR in 2014 which gave him an extra seven years of life, but by the end of 2020 his heart had weakened, even while his zest for life urged him to keep going. He declared he had always been a fighter and never gave up on anything. Don was born in the Albertina Kerr Nursery in Portland, Oregon on August 20, 1927 to Amelia Puustinen. His birth father was Ray Eld. He was adopted by William and Nellie Cassady of Vancouver, Washington. He would recall that he could not imagine having better parents and had no idea that he had been adopted. Ironically, Don grew up very proud of his Irish heritage not knowing that he was, in fact, of Finnish descent. In 2001 he learned, from an older cousin, that he had been adopted, and obtained his

hilip Martin McMahon, 80, of Tillamook, peacefully passed away on August 11th, from congestive heart failure. Phil graduated from THS in 1961 and proudly served in the Air Force National Guard from 1961-1967. He

original birth certificate which allowed him to identify his birth parents and find their relatives. He was astounded to learn that he was not Irish, but a “full Finn.” He often said,“I have the luck of the Irish in the skin of a Finn.” He learned of his true origins just 18 months after his birth mother’s passing, and felt a strong kinship with her upon learning about her life. Fortunately, her family graciously shared many stories of Amelia including a KOIN TV “Ray Summers at Large” story in which she was featured. His birth father’s family also had photos and stories to share with him. He enjoyed several large gatherings with this expanded family. Don graduated from Vancouver High School in 1945 and attended Clark College before serving in the Merchant Marines. In 1952 he earned his BS in Architectural Engineering from Washington State College, after which he had a short stint as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Air Force. He returned to Vancouver in 1953 and worked as a draftsman with Annand, Boone & Lei in Portland. Around this time he recalled a summer date he had enjoyed a few years before with Patty Cook. He assumed she was already married, having been, in his words “one of the most beautiful girls in school.” Driving on Main Street one day, he saw her walking, in her uniform and red coat, to her nursing shift at Vancouver Memorial Hospital. After a brief conversation he quickly followed up with a call to her at work. He was smitten and so was she! They married in 1954 and by 1964 had six children. Don took a leap and “hung out

his shingle” in 1959, as Don Cassady Architect, and later Cassady and Associates. His architectural career had many highlights. The Fort Vancouver Regional Library, at Mill Plain and Fort Vancouver Way, was one that really launched his career. It was dedicated in 1963. He was pleased and proud that thebuilding was given historic status in November 2019. He designed many other buildings during his career,several of them won awards. Don and Pat were an active couple. Along with his dad, they built a small beach cabin on the Oregon coast, where the family was found on most weekends and during summers. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, crabbing, hiking, beachcombing among many other hobbies and interests. They retired to Tillamook, Oregon where he enjoyed right turns all the way to the golf course and he golfed daily. Pat and Don celebrated his 70th birthday with an unforgettable three month cruise around the Pacific. In 2008 they moved back to Vancouver and settled into new routines. Don continued his active lifestyle making new friends along the way. He joined Heron Lakes Men’s club and golfed weekly, improved his watercolor skills with classes at Clark College and kept fit attending Silver Sneakers at Marshall Center and exercising at Boomerang. Don traveled to Finland in 2013, to visit family and admire the architecture. Cousins on his dad’s side had contacts for family that lived near Helsinki. They were very welcoming, hosted a family gathering in their home and took him to many architectural sites in the area. He traveled north to his

went to trade school for sheet metal and HVAC, commuting while working full time for two years. On November 21, 1969 he married Linda. He and Linda moved back to Tillamook in 1973, and started McMahon Heating and Sheet Metal in 1974. They both retired in 2000 from P & L Heating, Sheet Metal & Roofing. Phil had a great love of meeting new people and incorporating them into his life. He never met a stranger, and spent his life befriending and helping people. Phil and Linda had 3 children, but fostered and adopted many more over the years. To say he enjoyed watching Notre Dame football would be an understatement, he really loved all things Notre Dame, and wasn’t afraid to share his enthusi-

asm for his favorite team. In 2016 he was able to fulfill his lifelong dream of visiting ND, and attending a football game. He also enjoyed cruising in his 1941 Cadillac Convertible, and attending car shows and parades. He loved traveling the country and camping with Linda in their 5th wheel. Serendipity took a hand and not only managed to have him find relatives in the area, but brought him here just a few days prior to a family reunion. Even this lucky Irish-FInn was in disbelief at his good fortune in finding his mom’s family, meeting so many of them and obtaining a book that traced the family lineage back to the 1680’s. It felt surreal. He was thrilled to be asked to speak to the group. Don told them of his early admiration for the Finns and their display of “sisu” when he followed the WWII news of their underdog victory over the Soviets during the Winter War, He spoke of his career-long regard for Finnish architects Aalto and Saarinen. He shared how proud he was to learn that he was Finnish, and of how this better knowledge of himself came about. As he spoke, and his new found cousin Paula translated, the room was enraptured and there were many joyful tears. Pat wants everyone to know that he was a great architect, great husband and a life long friend. He is survived by his wife Patricia of 67 years and his six children: Carolyn(Mike), Cathy(Jim), Colleen, Chris(Jim), Dan(Janet), Susan(Neal) and granddaughters Keelin and Olivia. Don became ill in November and the family cared for him at home for all but the last ten days when he moved to Ray Hickey Hospice House. The family is very grateful for the months of home hospice support provided by the Peacehealth team and the nurses who cared for him at Ray Hickey.

Phil is survived by his wife Linda, of 51 years, children Crystal McMahon and Dave Noble, James McMahon, Shiela and Matthew Zerngast, bonus children, Michael and Janet Becker, Claire Jackson and Virgil Curtis, and Nichole Crossley, God daughter Amy Ranes, grandchildren Adrienne Hunter and Avian Wong, Vance Hunter, Marissa Zerngast, Ryley and Dakota Hartzell, Destiny Mendoza, Luke Bindreiff, Dustin Bindreiff, Whitney and Manuel Perez, great-grandchildren Emi Wong, Aubrianna Hartzell and Roxie Perez, and many nieces and nephews. A celebration of life for Phil will be held at Tillamook First Christian Church (2203 4th St, Tillamook) on Saturday, September 25th at 1:00 pm. The service will also be streamed, for those wishing to attend remotely. A light meal will follow the service. ordon Thompson Poole of Lake Oswego, son of Nellie [Thompson] and Kenneth Poole, was born on March 20, 1926 in Portland and passed away on May 21, 2021 having already celebrated his 95th birthday. Gord attended Duniway grade school in Eastmoreland and in 1942 moved to Tillamook where his father Ken Clifford Poole owned and operated a dairy. Gord attended Wilson Junior High School and graduated from Tillamook High School. During these years he worked at Pooles Dairy bottling milk and delivering glass milk bottles door-to-door. Pooles Dairy was the only dairy in the area that made ice cream so on occasion Gord would deliver ice cream to the merchants as far south as Taft in Lincoln City. Pooles Dairy sold in 1949 to the Tillamook County Creamery and the co-op has continued to make some of the best ice cream on the market. Gord was active in Troop 236 Boy Scouts of America where he earned the highest honor that of Eagle Scout. He attended summer camp at Camp Buchanan as well as Meriwether. Shortly after graduating from high school in 1944 Gord enlisted in the Navy following in his father’s footsteps who, had served in the Navy during World War I. Ultimately Gord was assigned as Ship’s Company on the USS Jerauld (APA-174) where he saw action in a battle by the Island of Ulithi— the last major battle prior to the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki that ended the war. Gord’s Battle Station was on one of the Big Guns and although many of the U.S. fleet were hit and sunk, several by Jap Kamikazes, his ship came through undamaged. Shortly there after his crew went ashore in Guam where Gord surprisingly met Rudy Fenk— an old friend from Tillamook. After the war in the fall of 1946, Gord and his younger brother Norm registered at Oregon State College following a course set by their parents after World War I. Gord received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration and Dairy Manufacturing with the

Shortly after graduating Gord with his brother Norm and two other Delta Tau Delta Fraternity brothers, Les Hammar of Tillamook and Ted Hal Carlson of Corvallis, made a trip to Europe where they stayed in youth hostels all over Western Europe. In Oslo, Norway they met up with B. Mary Paget, a classmate at OSC who at the time was a ski instructor for the children at the U.S. Embassy. One of the Tillamook High School’s finest ever schoolteachers Ida [Meling] Boquist had family still living in Haugesan, Norway so the American visitors received royal treatment there. Upon their return to the U.S. Gord entered the workforce, ultimately the dairy industry where he was a salesman for Kieckhefer Container Company (the largest manufacturer of Pure-Pak paper milk cartons) and after the merger with Weyerhaeuser. Gord had decided that he didn’t want to leave Portland so when Weyerhaeuser offered a promotion in Salt Lake he quit and spent the rest of his time working for smaller local companies but always in the dairy manufacturing business. One of his best customers was the Tillamook County Creamery (the largest co-op in the State of Oregon) where two of his good friends from school, Pete Sutton the General Manager and Rudy Fenk the President, controlled the operation. Gord always attended the local Dairy Manufacturing Conventions and even some out of state. After one convention that he attended in Atlantic City he decided to take a circuitous route home so he booked pas-

sage on the Grace Line luxury passenger ship “Santa Rosa” to South America and after several ports of call in South American flew home from Panama on Pan America Airways, world famous clipper ship. Besides the Dairy Manufacturing Conventions Gord was a regular at the Tillamook County Fair. He knew all of the drivers in the Pig and Ford Race so he knew who to bet on — not so on the horse races. He was also a lifetime member of the Tillamook Pioneers Society. Gord was also a lifetime (over 60 years) member of Southgate (now Cornerstone) Masonic Lodge, a lifetime member of the Portland Scottish Rite where he participated in many of the degrees, and of Al Kader Shrine where he spent many hours as a Welcoming Guide at the Shriner’s Hospital for Children. In 1961 Gord married Jean Henrickson, an identical twin sister of Joyce. The twins were both beautiful ballroom dancers and were fixtures at McElroy’s of Downtown Portland although their partners never knew for sure which one they were dancing with. Gord and Jean had two boys, Ron (wife Samera) of Portland and a granddaughter Natasha, and Dan (wife Gina) and a grandson Travis. Dan has now retired from Boeing Aircraft and with his family is now living in Rockaway. Gord and Jean also had one girl Connie who is unmarried and after many years in Hawaii is now in the Los Angeles area. Jean’s twin sister Joyce married Dick Dickinson. Joyce has been deceased for many years now but Dick is still living in the Portland area. Their son Jeffrey is living in the Los Angeles area. Jean died in 1971 and after several months as a Bachelor raising three young children, Gord rediscovered a girl, Marilyn Miiller from Chicago that he had met in Sun Valley many years before and in November 1972 they were married in Oak Park, Illinois. Gord and Marilyn donated much of their time hosting functions and helping with maintenance of the Lake Oswego United Methodist Church. Gord sold their home in Lake Oswego in 20¬¬¬17 and he and

Marilyn moved to Farmington Square in Tualatin. Marilyn died June 22, 2018 but Gord stayed on at Farmington Square until the END. Gord’s brother Norm with his wife Marilyn [Rigby] Poole live in Ontario, Oregon where Norm spent yearsbuilding up an oil business that their two sons continued to operate. Ralph and Ken recently sold Poole Oil to Carson Oil and are themselves now retired. Norm and Marilyn’s daughter Kathy (although an Oregon State University graduate) is head of the Foreign Student Program at the University of Oregon and is nearing retirement. Gord outlived most of his close friends and associates but is dearly missed by those that remain as well as many of the next generation for which he provided guidance and inspiration. A military funeral was held on June 3, 2021 at Willamette National Cemetary for Gord where his body is interred next to his parents.

rior design business called Wallmark and Son Painting. Interesting enough Ed named his business when his son Eddy was born so it would appear a younger person had lots of painting experience! This advertising muse worked as Ed became well known around the area and would still paint friend’s homes until months before his passing. A special time was shared last summer when Ed and Eddy painted his son’s house together. Some of Ed’s other talents included gardening and an obsession with ponds and water features. His garden and surrounding backyard was the perfect final resting place just as he wanted. For over a month family and friends were able to visit and see Ed just as he always was, a great friend to so many that would help anyone in need. His tell it like is attitude, lack of political correctness, sense of humor, and compassion for all walks of life will be greatly missed. Ed was preceded in death by his brother Stephen Wallmark and his life partner Jacob Pelta. He is lovingly survived by his parents Ed and Dianne Wallmark, his sisters Vicki Mount (Tenny), and Brenda Merry (Mark), his son Eddy Wallmark (Jennifer), step-grandchildren Taylor and Austin Larson, and step-great grandson Bentley. He will also be deeply missed by his beloved dog Willy, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
