Two school districts make plans for in-person learning T

Now, Neah-KahNie School District is making plans to possibly begin a transition to in-person learning. Nestucca Valley School District plans to begin in-person learning with a staggered return schedule beginning Monday, Sept. 20, with limited in-person learning. Tillamook School District Superintendent Curt Shelley spoke during a school board meeting Monday, Sept. 13, about COVID-19 protocols at the schools. “I cannot tell you how excited I was in June to take these masks off,” Shelley said. I can’t tell you how much more excited I was last Monday to welcome over 2,000 students into our building.” Shelley said if you are wearing a mask correctly, you do not have to isolate if you are a close contact, unless you test positive for COVID-19 or develop symptoms. “We have a shortage in teachers,” Shelley said. Shelley told the Headlight Herald that since in-service in late

August, the district has had 13 staff resignations, which include one certified teacher who transferred to another district and 12 classified employees. Of those 12 employees, six of them resigned as a result of vaccination requirements. The recent classified incentive, effective for one year, will increase classified salaries by 10 percent. The school district has implemented many new things this school year, including vision screening, encouraging vaccinations, wearing masks and more. “If we have the safety protocols in our schools, we can mitigate COVID,” Shelley said. “We do have some issues and we do have some positive cases.” Shelley added that the district has not had a tremendous increase in cases since opening school. Employees need to be fully vaccinated by Oct. 18 in K-12 schools. Shelley said he understands the frustration with the governor’s

mandate but employees have choice within the mandate. Employees can either be fully vaccinated by Oct. 18 or file a religious or medical exemption. Due to a downward trend in test positivity in the county, Neah-KahNie School District and Nestucca Valley School District are making plans to transition to in-person learning. Both districts began the school year with distance learning. On Sept. 15, Neah-Kah-Nie School District announced in a letter to the community, that on Monday, Sept. 20, Neah-Kah-Nie School District and health officials will discuss the most current COVID-19 data and make a decision on whether to continue with distance learning or transition to in-person learning. If the district moves to in-person learning, the plan is for a Monday through Friday schedule. School administrators will continue to develop a plan to serve students who will be in quarantine.

“It is important for all of us to understand, we will be living with the virus until there is widespread immunity,” Superintendent Paul Erlebach stated. “The best tools to protect ourselves and others are vaccination, physical distancing, face coverings, ventilation, hand hygiene and staying home if exposed to someone with COVID-19. On Sept. 15, Nestucca Valley School District announced in a letter to the community a plan to return to in-person learning. The school district asked every family to complete a survey about transportation and preferred instructional model. The school district will be offering instruction virtually for those that do not wish to move to in-person learning yet. Limited in-person instruction begins Sept. 20 for a handful of students that were previously contacted. On Wednesday, Sept. 22, the 6th and 7th grade students return to in-person learning. Kindergarten classes begin in person Friday, Sept. 24. On Monday, Sept. 27, 1-5th grade students will return to in-person learning. Bus transportation will begin Monday, Sept. 27. Adventist Health Tillamook announces elective surgeries restarting Sept. 20 C

iting decreased pressure on the Adventist Health Medical Center to attend to COVID-19 patients, Adventist Health Tillamook is restarting elective surgeries starting Monday, Sept. 20. Elective surgeries cover a wide range of procedures, typically scheduled in advance and are considered nonemergent or urgent for an immediate and potentially life-threatening issue requiring medical attention. Emergent and urgent surgeries have continued throughout the most recent COVID-19 surge spanning through the most recent pause of elective surgeries beginning Aug.18, responding to a wide range of emergencies that a critical

access hospital like Adventist Health Tillamook would typically respond to. “Our role in supporting our community must always be to provide compassionate care,” said Adventist Health Tillamook president Eric Swanson. “We have been closely watching, and acting on the most recent COVID surge so that we can provide a safe environment for our patients, and provide elective surgery capacity they need as soon as we can.” While recent numbers of patients needing COVID-19 testing have shown a decline strong enough to allow for elective surgery to return, Adventist Health Tillamook believes that the evidence of getting a vaccine is still very important to the communities they serve. All COVID-19 vaccines are safe, effective, and readily available to protect against the Delta variant as well any new variants they may encounter in the future. Getting a vaccine,

and continuing mask usage will prevent another surge so that they

may provide elective surgery to patients for the foreseeable future.

Tillamook County at 23 deaths T

illamook County Health Department reported during a Tillamook County Board of Commissioners meeting Wednesday, Sept. 15, 51 COVID-19 cases for the weekend case count between Sept. 10 and Sept. 12. For the 7-day case count, from Sept. 5 through Sept. 11, there were 150 cases. For the 14-day case count, there were 304 cases from Aug. 29 through Sept. 11. “There are different causes for breakthrough cases,” Administrator Marlene Putman said. “Really the causes are multi-factorial. They can include such things as an individual’s immune system and the amount of virus that’s in an individual’s body.” As of Wednesday, Sept. 15, the death toll is at 23. As of press time, the health department had not provided information on whether the two new cases were unvaccinated or vaccinated individuals. On Sept. 14, the county stood at 21 deaths, with 17 of those unvaccinated individuals, three with no vaccine record and one fully vaccinated individual. “With the COVID-19 surge across the state, Oregon Health Authority notes that an associated increase in COVID-19 related fatalities will and has occurred and will continue to do so,” Putman said. “Oregon Health Sciences University has forecast that they expect this peak in COVID-19 related deaths to reach that peak actually by mid-September.” Putman said they hope and expect a decrease shortly after the peak. Putman said Tillamook County has 77 hospitalizations, as of Sept. 15. Test positivity is currently at 16 percent, a slight decrease from the previous week, which was 16.6 percent. Citizens await movement in Cherry Street Trail Hilary Dorsey Staff Writer

The Classic Ridge Trail Access Campaign (TAC) proposed and presented to the Manzanita City Council in May 2020 to permit use of a new public walking trail, the South Cherry Trail, where existing right-of-way exists from Cherry Street west to Ocean Road. The trail would be for walking and would provide beach access and an evacuation route for numerous residents of the Classic Ridge area. The city had closed the public right-of-way at Ocean Way, south of Cherry to the beach. Many neighbors had used the route to the beach. “The fencing and blockage of all access to and from Classic Ridge to the beach on April 26, 2020 has caused extreme concern and hardship for those in Classic Ridge and an urgent solution is essential,” the proposal to the city stated. Mayor Mike Scott had stated in a previous letter to the TAC that his hope would be that an answer and path forward could be developed no later than the first quarter of 2021. The city had agreed in a special council meeting Jan. 14, 2021 to post no trespassing signs on the right-of-way to prevent a tort claim from a neighbor. The proposed trail is in view of his yard. Stan Myers, a resident of Classic Ridge, said the city has not moved forward on the trail. Several citizens voiced this concern during a city council meeting Sept. 8. Chris Robinson, who has a home on Cherry Street, said the residents had access to the beach for decades. “Until the city blocked the access, we and our neighbors enjoyed that,” Robinson said. “I’m asking the city to work with us to establish a trail.” Citizen Patrick Murphy said the concern is getting a timeframe and there has been proven historic use of the trail. “The number of people being cut off for beach access

versus the number of people who are threatened by that beach access; it just seems weird to me that the city council hasn’t addressed this earlier,” Murphy said. City Manager Leila Aman gave an update on the trail during the Sept. 8 meeting. “There’s a lot of feelings and a lot of things that have happened with this project,” Aman said. The city created a Master Trail Plan that includes the proposed South Cherry Trail. Aman said the city is intending to have a trail committee once the city has the capacity to manage it. Pioneer Museum begins new project with community grant assistance This month the Tillamook County Pioneer Museum (TCPM) began a large-scale inventory project to digitize records and catalogue its entire object collection. The Object Reconciliation and Accountability Project will improve recordkeeping and inform museum staff on best object care and storage. It will also address the rehousing needs of thousands of TCPM artifacts from the Latimer Quilt and Textile Center to a yet-undetermined location. The project will take several years to complete and funding is being pursued from various revenue streams, including the first grant supporter of the project: Umpqua Bank Charitable Foundation. “The Umpqua Bank Charitable Foundation is grateful to have been invited by the Tillamook County Pioneer Museum to support the Object Reconciliation and Accountability Project with a community grant” said Brendan Butler VP, community development officer for Oregon. “Building thriving communities starts with remembering and telling the stories of those

who came before and most critical is that all voices are included. We look forward to seeing this project grow.” TCPM’s Collections Manager/Assistant Director Peyton Tracy, who is already hard at work digitizing records, is spearheading the project. “We don’t know exactly how many objects are in storage—that’s part of the problem—but we think there are upwards of 55,000,” Tracy said. “This is a huge undertaking.” The project is comprised of three phases: digitizing collections records, inventory of all storage spaces, and resolving discrepancies between the records and the objects/ rehoming at-risk artifacts. Tracy added, “This project is necessary because at the moment we don’t have a comprehensive grasp on what we have in our holdings and what stories they may be able to tell about our community and region’s history. Our collection is exceptionally large for a museum of our size, in part due to the dedicated support of our community. We want to be able to preserve

it to the highest standards and make use of it to share our collective history with the public.” Though museum staff is working diligently, help is still needed to index and inventory the collections. Anyone interested in volunteering for the current phase, data entry, is encouraged to reach out by email at exhibits@tcpm. org or by phone at 503-842-4553. “At the end of this project, our collection will be more accessible than ever before. We’ll be able to access our collections more readily and make better use of them in exhibits, programs, and research,” said Tracy. “All of the possibilities that come out of this endeavor are so compelling and thrilling, it makes the hard work worth it!” About the Tillamook County Pioneer Museum Founded in 1935 by Tillamook Oregon pioneers, the Tillamook County Pioneer Museum offers 19 display areas that focus on the history

of the North Oregon Coast. The museum’s mission is to preserve and interpret the Cultural Heritage of the North Oregon Coast and to foster appreciation and respect of the North Oregon Coast’s environment. The current collection includes 55,000 items and 20,000 photographs ranging from prehistoric specimens to modern day. The Tillamook County Pioneer Museum is open to the public Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The public can use the research library by appointment only.

National Guard supports Adventist Health Tillamook

In order to facilitate the continuing surge of COVID-19 patients, Adventist Health Tillamook has requested six National Guard service members to support patient screening at the Medical Office – Plaza and Medical Center entry, as well as supporting the ED. Starting this week, these personnel additions will be unarmed and trained as volunteers to support existing healthcare staff so that Adventist Health Tillamook may continue to provide excellent, compassionate care with additional staff support. All National Guard members will be dressed in fatigues/uniforms, as long as they stay which is predicted to be through the end of the month. Their accommodations will be in local hotels, and they will be driving using civilian transportation. “These troops released by State of Oregon Governor Brown come at a time when they are most needed,” said Gina Seufert, physi-

The FDA has authorized the therapy for emergency use for eligible people, such as those who are considered high risk for developing severe symptoms with COVID-19. “If you test positive for COVID-19 or have symptoms, talk to your health care provider right away,” Putman said of the treatment. “This treatment must be given as soon as possible, or within 10 days, of getting a symptom. These treatments require provider referral after a positive test.” Locally, the treatment is given at Adventist Health Tillamook, Putman added.

Drive up testing for those with symptoms or are close contacts is available from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at the Tillamook County Fairgrounds. As of Sept. 13, 16,462 residents have received at least one dose of the vaccine. This is 70.76 percent of the 12-plus population and 61.91 percent of the total population. A total of 14,744 residents are considered fully vaccinated, with 63.51 percent of the 12 years and

New Legislation that impacts TBCC Dr. Ross Tomlin TBCC President

T

he 2021 Oregon state legislative session was completed this past June. As always, there are many bills approved and signed into law that impact community colleges. This year was no exception. I want to share some of the main bills that will become law this year that will have an impact on TBCC. First, thanks to the quick recovery of the state revenue picture over this past winter into spring, the Legislature was able to fund community colleges at the full amount that we needed to maintain our current level of service. This was great news since it seemed very unlikely that would happen this past fall. The other legislative result that involves funding was approval of $8M in matching funds to help TBCC build a new building on our campus, just south of the current main campus on property we already own. We are extremely grateful to have $8M in economic development funding coming to Tillamook County to support higher education. The College will now start working on raising

the remainder of the required funds and will be sharing those plans with the community soon. To help students, the Legislature also approved funding for colleges to hire a full-time Benefits Navigator that will assist students in determining eligibility and applying for federal, state and local benefits programs. Colleges will also now have to display all their mandatory fees and costs of required course materials on their website. TBCC is supportive of this requirement and has been in compliance for years. In addition, law enforcement agencies and public bodies are prohibited from denying benefits and opportunities to people based on their federal civil immigration status, along with inquiring about an individual’s citizen-

ship status. Finally, the Legislature passed a bill that will require community colleges and universities to work together to develop common course numbers between the two systems. This should enhance seamless transfer for students between colleges and universities. Over 60% of TBCC students have transferring to a university as a goal. This will help make it easier for them to do so. On August 25th, the College hosted a Legislative Summit for our four state legislators. We had all four attend (Senator Betsy Johnson, Senator Dick Anderson, Representative Suzanne Weber, and Representative David Gomberg). We also had all three Tillamook County Commissioners attend. shouldn’t tell you this, but if you really want to get under a librarian’s skin, all you have to do is ask, “Why do we need libraries when we can just Google it?” It pains me to even type that sentence! Since librarians are generally a polite bunch, we will probably just smile and offer to help when asked that question. What we would really like to say is to quote best-selling author Neil Gaiman who said, “Google will bring you back a hundred thousand answers. A librarian will bring you back the right one.” We used to live in a world where there was not enough information. You had to go to a library and find a book that hopefully had the facts you were looking for. But now, with the Internet available to all, there is actually too much information...and too much of it is misinformation. A simple search for your favorite “key words” can bring back many thousands of results and not

We are also excited to have Penny Eberle bringing perennials and shrubs she grew herself. Fall is one

of the best times to do some landscaping, so your garden and lawn is ready for spring. Or, it’s not too early to be thinking about holiday shopping, and how many people on your list would love something unique and hand-made from the farmers market? From custom-made jewelry to wine to scrumptious jarred preservatives and the softest baby blankets known to mankind — there are gift ideas for everyone. It’s been a tremendous season all around, and I’m so thankful to everyone who came down and shopped with us. I have to give such a huge, heartfelt thank you to my vendors for being the best group of people I could ever ask for. We have so much fun together and I look forward to seeing them every single week. They work so hard to be here and their passion and dedication shines through every single Saturday. all of that information is true. As we have learned so much lately, just because it is on the Internet, doesn’t make it factual. Here is one example. Imagine you are a student doing some research for a report and you put “octopus” into the search box on Google. The number one result that used to pop up is the webpage for “Save the Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus”! Of course, there is no such thing as a tree octopus, but the website, which is still quite active, has pages and pages of information, tips for activism, Photoshopped photos, and links to other bogus information. At least Google has now moved this web page further down the list of suggested reading so it is no longer the number one recommended info source for octopus. On a somewhat related topic, I am never a really big fan when a celebrity writes a book and gets it published just because they are famous. Seems like every movie star wants to write a kid’s book

We want to hear from you and encourage you to write letters to the editor. Because of space limitations, shorter letters have a better chance of being printed. We may edit your letter for style, grammar and clarity, although we do as little editing as possible. Letters longer than 300 words will not be printed. Letters can be on any topic, but letters on local issues will be given preference. Letters to the Editor that attack or challenge private individuals or private businesses will be refused. We believe education does not stop when you have finished school. Learning is a lifelong progression and the library is here to help with whatever goals you may have. Whether you want to learn a foreign language, figure out how to fix a drippy faucet, or understand the world a little better, we have resources to help. We get oodles of questions every week on different topics people are researching. This is our challenge to you. If you are interested in learning more about ANYTHING, be it beekeeping, baking cookies, scuba diving, ancient civilizations, distant galaxies, how to build a barn, or anything else you are interested in, let us find some information to help you out! If you are a work in progress, we will help you achieve your goals, and we’ll do it so much better than a Google search ever could. And you better believe we are not going to give you any information about the Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus!

oy, are Kathy and Kevin Burke in the chips! Fish and chips, that is. In a single day, they caught 10 trout and two salmon. First, neighbor Jerry Thompson took them out on Cape Meares Lake, where they each limited out (five apiece) on pretty rainbow trout. Next, neighbor Steve Walz took them out on Tillamook Bay, where they each caught a big salmon. Kathy named her 25-pound monster Ricky, and Kevin named his 20-pounder Tiny Tim. Then to top it all off, they went out by themselves in their own boat on Tillamook Bay the next day, and each of them caught another Chinook— this time matching 18-pounders! The Burke family is in for healthy eating for some time to come. Speaking of fishing—and boating, for that matter— there are signs up at the Memaloose boat launch that say the ramps are closed at low tide and to launch at high tide only. There is a big build-up of sedimentation on both sides, especially the east side. As those of us with boats know, what depth of water you can safely launch in depends on the size and shape of your boat. But in order to keep folks out of

trouble, the signs make a blanket statement. All of us who use that boat launch had hoped it would be dredged during the permittable time frame, July 15-Sept. 15, but it didn’t happen. Now we hear it won’t happen until 2022; too bad! Apparently too many alphabet soup agencies are involved in granting permits: Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW), the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), the Department of State Lands (DSL), the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) and/or US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), Tribal and/or State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO), the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), and Tillamook County Parks. A neighbor had asked me the purpose of the two strips across the road entering Cape Meares. It turns out these are traffic counters. There are also a couple of counters at the start of Bayocean Road, as you come off Highway 131. The road department recently got new traffic counters and are using them in several high usage areas to measure traffic. One of the issues they were interested in researching was traffic to and from the beaches; did it change permanently when the pandemic hit (we all know our beaches were slammed in the summer of 2020)? They measured before and after this Labor Day, and traffic appeared light. Traffic usage information about our village will also be useful as the two-year Cape Meares Loop Road project gets underway in 2022.

OBITUARIES Kerry Lynn (Vellinga) Bodie Aug. 23, 1970 - Sept. 1, 2021

K

erry was born August 23, 1970 and went very peacefully to be with her Lord and Savior on September 1, 2021. Kerry knew no stranger. Everyone was a friend and her friends were “family”. She had many interests in her life. She loved all animals, especially horses, dogs, and cats. Kerry was a very crafty person, but her greatest gift was photography. She captured many beautiful memories for friends and family. Photographing nature was her specialty. She had an uncanny ability to see beauty in its simplest form in her pictures. Kerry is survived by her husband of 24 years,

Eric Bodie, her two beautiful daughters, who were “her life”, Kayla Anne and Mickinley Marie, and by her mother, Kathy Vellinga all of Tillamook. She is also survived by her sister, Shelly Vellinga Bighill (Richard) of Hammond, OR, her motherin-law Vickie Bodie, and sister-in-law Jennifer Bodie Long (Rich) of Knappa. Kerry loved and was so proud of her nephews John Bighill, Nathan Bighill (Charlene) and baby Colton, Ethan Long, Rudy Ellenberg, and Porter Ellenberg. She also leaves behind her many special aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Kerry was preceded in death by her father Leon Vellinga, her father-inlaw Dave Bodie, her sister-in-law Angie Bodie Ellenberg, her grandparents, and many of her beloved pets. Donations in memory of Kerry can be sent to the Tillamook Nazarene Church Youth Ministry. A memorial service will be held in the Spring.

Forrest Edward Blum Sept. 22, 1940 - Sept. 10, 2021

orrest Edward Blum was born September 22, 1940 to Floyd and Pauline Blum in Tillamook, Oregon and resided in nearby Sandlake, Oregon his whole life. He passed away on September 10, 2021 in his home in Sandlake, Oregon, surrounded by loved ones. Forrest attended Nestucca High School. Shortly after graduation Forrest and Beverly were married in Sandlake on January 16, 1963. Forrest worked for a logging company prior to opening Sandlake Grocery. Beverly and Forrest bought the Sandlake Grocery store in 1987 and the store has continued to operate since. Forrest

Irene was a loving wife, caring mother and marvelous Oma. She always put family first, as well as, giving those without family near a seat at her table. She was the utmost happi-

Loretta Jean Landolt Aug. 26, 1940 - Sept. 7, 2021

oretta Jean Landolt, 81, passed away peacefully on Sept. 7, 2021 in Tillamook with her sister by her side. Loretta was born on Aug. 26, 1940 to Lena Steiner Landolt and Frank Landolt. Loretta was a Special Child, handicapped from a birth injury. Having been lovingly cared for at home for 53 years, Loretta entered the Marie Mills program in Tillamook, where she was for 28 years. She was lovingly cared for and got to experience many things - trips, camping, airplane rides, even a motorcycle ride! Loretta loved people and enjoyed everyone that came to visit. Loretta was preceded in death by her father and mother. She is survived by her sister, Linda Beyer (Larry), nephews, Jeff Percher (Jodee) and John Percher (Kelsie), and four grandnieces, Ashlyn, Sofee, Jorgee and Adalyn. Linda would like to thank Marie Mills for the many years of loving care given Loretta.

Pat Gefre 1949 - 2021

Lenora Werner Chase Anderson (Sis) Dec. 11, 1930 - Sept. 13, 2021

S

is Anderson passed away on September 13, 2021 in Tillamook, Oregon. Sis was born December 11, 1930 in Mohler, Oregon, to Paul Werner Sr and Georgia Johnson Werner. She lived in Mohler Oregon as a young girl in logging camp 4, until her family moved to Bayside Gardens in Nehalem, Oregon. Sis attended Nehalem High School where she was a champion ping pong player and also a head cheerleader before she graduated in 1948. It was Nehalem High School where she met Harold Chase, her first husband and they were married in 1950. Sis was a waitress in Nehalem while also working at Nehalem High School as a secretary. She and Harold had their first son, Howard, in 1955. After their son’s birth they moved to Corvallis, Oregon, to operate a restaurant they purchased. After their restaurant adventure Sis and Harold moved to Logsden, Oregon, where Harold worked at a lumber camp for Georgia Pacific. In 1961 another move was in store for the Chase family as they moved to Newport, Oregon, where they purchased a laundromat. Werner, their second son was born at this time in Toledo, Oregon, near Newport. Sis and Harold returned to Nehalem and built a house next to her parents Paul Sr and Georgia. Harold returned to the logging industry in Nehalem, and then moved to Morton, Washington for a logging job. This is where Sis discovered her passion for snowmobiling. In 1971 her husband Harold was killed in a logging accident. Sis and her two sons moved back

to Nehalem and became a school bus driver in order to support her sons. In 1975, Sis married, Dale Anderson. Sis and the boys joined Dale at his family dairy on McDonald road in Nehalem. Sis continued her snowmobiling passion with Dale on Mount St Helens, as well as Mount Rainier. Sis also enjoyed clam digging and was famous for her clam fritters. In 1979 Sis and Dale purchased the family home in Bayside Gardens where Sis spent a majority of her childhood. In 1982, Dale purchased a service station in Sumpter, Oregon, and Sis was soon to follow after she finished her bus driving season. Both enjoyed gold mining and even invested in a claim located in Greenhorn, Oregon. In 1985 Sis and Dale traveled to Alaska with family and friends and visited every county in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Nevada and a few in California when they retired in 1995. Sis was known for her kindness and hospitality and hosted Werner Family reunions and smaller get togethers for decades. There have been 5 generations that were blessed to gather on the Bayside Gardens property, thanks to the generous and welcoming spirit of Sis and Dale. Sis is preceded in death by her husband Harold Chase, son Brian Anderson, brothers Paul Jr Werner and Leland Werner and sisters Agibelle Werner and Mary Werner. Sis is survived by her husband Dale Anderson, sister-in-law Betty Widmer Werner, three sons Howard Chase, Werner and Tonya Chase, Aaron and Celestine Anderson, daughter Debra and Chris Carpenter, 8 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Graveside service Saturday, September 25, 1:00pm, at the Nehalem American Legion Cemetery, 10755 NeCarney City Road, Nehalem, OR 97131. at Gefre, 72 passed at home. He was the oldest of Nicholas and Donna Gefre who along with brother Danny proceeded him in death. He is survived by his wife Laurie, daughters Sara Stone, Amanda Gefre and son Nicholas Gefre. He

and Laurie recently retired after 16 years owning and running Nestucca Valley Sporting Goods in Hebo. He loved fishing and camping. He hoped to travel to Alaska and fish the crooked river in Oregon. He was known for his music abilities playing bass in Portland Jr. Symphony and several jazz bands around Portland. He was a member of the original Ambrosia band and traveled 2 years across country. He coached baseball and softball with his kids and other youth. Celebration of life September 25th, 2021 held at Rhodes pond 5 1/2 miles east of Hebo on Hwy #22. Robert Zuercher Nov. 4, 1928 - Aug. 23, 2021

R

obert (Bob) Zeurder left this world Aug. 23, 2021. Bob was born in Tillamook on Nov. 4, 1928 to Louis and Louise (Bush) Zuercher. He was a lifelong resident of Tillamook except for service in the Marines. See was a proud graduate of Tillamook High School Cheesemakers.

Bob was the consummate sportsman. He loved hunting, fishing, crabbing, and most of all clam digging. He always came home with his limit of clams, and at one time dug Razor Clams commercially. Bot’s freezers were always full. Bob had a deep love for animals. Always having dogs and cats for pets, he extended his animal love to strays delivering food and drink nearly every day. Survivors include his three children who are Angela Irwin, Stephen Zuercher, and Roberta Johnson. He was predeceased by his parents, Louis and Louise Zuercher, his two sisters Dorothy Smith and Sandra Lawrence, and his loving wife of 55 years, June. Bob delighted us all with his laughter and joke telling. Generally struggling near the end of a joke because he was already laughing outlaid. He was a loving family member and friend. Services will be private.

Thank you Schrader Kudos to Congressman Kurt Schrader for leading critical efforts to determine the origin of the COVID-19 outbreak. Experts in the scientific and U.S. intelligence communities, and a majority of Americans, believe that the pandemic likely resulted from an accident at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, which was manipulating coronaviruses in U.S. taxpayer-funded animal experiments. Former FDA Commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb has explained that, “by assembling a large repository of dangerous coronaviruses into a single lab in a densely populated city, and experimenting on animals, Chinese researchers greatly increased the risk of a lab leak.“ To date, China has stonewalled efforts to investigate the lab. But Rep. Schrader is leading the call for a bipartisan, independent 9/11-style commission to get to the bottom of this. Our 3 million members in OR and beyond are grateful to Rep. Oh, The Irony Last Wednesday on the 8th of September, while the Oregon Board of Forestry was meeting and your local neighbors were petitioning them to implement changes in forest policy that would better protect drinking water,

a helicopter hired by Stimson Lumber hit a high power line while spraying a mix of industrial strength chemicals to kill native vegetation in one of their clearcuts. Fortunately the pilot walked away without injuries. Because observers are required to be present when this type of operation takes place, the fire that started as a result of the accident was extinguished before it became yet another major wildfire in this season that’s been so burdensome for our firefighters. This operation took place in a watershed that provides Tillamook with some of its drinking water. Imagine if that load of chemicals would have landed in a different place - in that creek that flows into an intake that supplies water to 4000 people. And if you really want to conjure up a nightmare scenario, think of the “what if” when you take into consideration the industrial spray operations that have taken place in this state too close to a school playground. Stimson and the helicopter company apparently chose not to reveal their purpose for being there, because local news outlets tell a story that made the accident appear as if it were all a result of spraying power line access. Well, it wasn’t, and it’s indicative of how fearful these timber companies are of how their reckless practices are being put on notice by communities that just want their access to safe drinking water respected and treated as the legal right that it is. planted a huge crop of zucchini this year, and am really reaping the benefits. I have a black thumb, so I am hugely pleased and quite satisfied with them. But, I have decided next year I will plant less zucchini and substitute bunches of spaghetti squash. We bought one from a farmers market, and I have to say it was simply delightful. I sure hope they are as easy to grow as zucchini. I may also throw a few pumpkins in the mix. This September 11th marked the passage of two decades since we were attacked on our own soil by foreign terrorists; and it changed our lives and our nation forever. On September 11th, the National 9-11 Memorial and Museum held a reading of names of those who were lost in the attack on the World Trade Center towers. Houses of worship tolled their bells, and at sundown the annual tribute in light illuminated the sky. Twenty years ago, our country’s shared grief was replaced with hope, resilience, and unity. Twenty years later, we still remember and reflect on that day when everyday people just like us, not soldiers, packed their lunch pails, kissed their families goodbye, and I hope the last words their family heard were “I love you.” Yes, they were just like us. But on that day, they didn’t come home. Dear Readers, democracy is our only defense against terrorism, both foreign and domestic. Let unity win over division, and love over hate. Opening the doors to personal transformation (Part 2 of 2-Part Series) Michelle Jenck Tillamook County Wellness Coordinator ast week we shared Mariah Decker’s story, about her personal journey and how experiencing trauma in her early childhood led to severe depression, anxiety and poor health into her twenties. Thanks to on-the-job training for Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), Mariah was able to make the connection between her exposure to early trauma and her mental and

physical health concerns. Taking inspiration from the quote, You can’t pour from an empty cup, she began a process to fill her own cup and restore her health. Struggling with mental health issues and obesity, Mariah was overwhelmed by the thought of making healthy behavior changes. “It was terrifying.” she recalls. “How am I going to get from where I am now to where I want to be?” She took a step back and thought, “What are the little decisions I can make today that are going to compound into a big difference later on?” Mariah’s plan for personal transformation did not start with a goal of losing weight. She decided to focus first on getting her “mind right” and says, “The more I got my brain in order, the more I started feeling happy.” She began by practicing being present and grateful each day, finding inspirational quotes and choosing to have a positive perspective. That was a turning point, she says. “With my mindset and motivation in place, I was ready to take charge of my life and not just be a bystander.” As a teacher at South Prairie School, Mariah was required to set professional goals each year and she had the option to include personal goals as well. Mariah decided to make her health transformation a “work-thing,” where her boss could help hold her accountable. “I decided to set a personal goal – something I had never done before – to do one social thing every month. I had to post about it on Facebook and tag my boss.” Despite extreme anxiety, she committed to completing one new social activity each month, like going out for ice cream with a co-worker or attending a family dinner. Over time, getting out and doing things became easier and more fun and she started taking better care of herself and her appearance. One of Mariah’s monthly goals was to go to the YMCA. She and her husband had a membership but she had

never used it. “I had never even walked through the doors of the building,” she says. “That became my goal – just to walk through the doors. Sometimes, the hardest part is just getting started; I didn’t want to put any pressure on myself to use the gym or join a class. All I had to do was go there and see what it was all about.” When she did walk through the doors of the Y, people were friendly and welcoming. “I did it and none of my worst fears were realized,” Mariah says. “What I saw was there were real people who looked like me, were the same size as me, on elliptical machines, grunting, lifting weights, swimming. And I realized, this wasn’t just for the healthy people, it was for all the people. I ended up signing up for a class and it evolved from there. I did Zumba and weight training classes. I even work out at home now.” Mariah explains that it is the “not knowing” that’s scary. Once she put herself into each new situation, she was able to discover that it was okay and gained the confidence she needed to try the next thing. Now, four years into her journey, Mariah is quick to point out that this is a longterm gig. “From the very beginning I told myself this isn’t going to be a fad thing.

Having lost eighty pounds, people have taken notice of Mariah’s physical transformation but she says that isn’t what motivates her. “It’s an extra thing; My body is just a vessel. What motivates me is how I feel - having more energy and vitality.” And, while she does not belong to an organized religion, Mariah emphasizes the role spirituality has played in supporting her well-being. “I feel really close to God. It is related to my practice of gratefulness. It’s hard to be judgmental or feel angry when you are practicing being grateful.
