County at 34 confirmed COVID-19 cases A

s of Wednesday, Aug. 26, Tillamook County Community Health Centers (TCCHC) reports two new confirmed positive COVID-19 cases, which brings the county to 34 positive confirmed cases. The county also has four presumptive cases, bringing total confirmed and presump-
tive cases to 38, according to Oregon Health Authority. One of the new positive cases was confirmed Aug. 24 and is an individual aged 50-59. The other individual who tested positive is also aged 50-59. Case investigation, contact tracing and follow up are ongoing. According to TCCHC, there is one individual in the county who is currently hospitalized with COVID-19 related illness. There
have been 2,556 total tests completed, with 2,522 negative tests. There are currently three active cases in isolation or quarantine and 35 closed cases. There have been zero COVID-19 related deaths in Tillamook County, TCCHC reported. According to Oregon Health Authority (OHA), the age group most affected by the virus remains those aged 20-29, although the elderly remain the hardest hit age
group. COVID-19 hospitalization and death rates increase with age. “About two-thirds of cases reported contact with a confirmed case, most commonly from someone in their household,” OHA stated in their weekly report on Aug. 26. With Labor Day weekend approaching, OHA reminds Oregonians that the safest way to celebrate is to avoid groups and gatherings, to stay home and to

he Historic Cloverdale Cruisin will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5. This event is free for all cars, trucks and motorcycles. Organizer Tom Goodwin said the historic cruisin is usually held on a Wednesday, but in light of COVID-19, it is held during Labor Day weekend to encourage people to attend. This is a very casual non-event. Face
masks and social distancing are encouraged. “We’re trying to make it as healthy as we can,” Goodwin said. Goodwin said Cloverdale is currently being revitalized historically. Local historian Sally Rissell has been working with the historical society to achieve this. The historic cruisin has always been free, Goodwin added. There are usually trophies, music and sponsors. There are no awards this year due to COVID-19. While the event is free, donations are
encouraged, which will go to the Nestucca Fire & Rescue and the purchase of extraction equipment. Local businesses such as Antonette’s Kitchen South, Nestucca Bay Creamery and Center Market will be open for snacks and meals. Goodwin said the cruisin is very casual as they respect guidelines during the virus.
ark David, of Hillsboro, was archery hunting on Saturday, Aug. 29, on private property in the area of Trask Road East in Tillamook. David wounded a bull elk but was unable to locate it before dark. According to Oregon State Police (OSP), David and the landowner attempted to find the wounded bull the morning of Sunday, Aug. 30. At approximately 9:15 a.m., David located the bull and attempted to kill it with his bow. The elk charged David and gored him in the neck with its antlers. The landowner attempted to help David but he sustained fatal injuries and died. The landowner was uninjured. The elk was killed and the meat was donated to the Tillamook County Jail following the investigation. OSP was assisted by the Tillamook County Sheriff’s Office, Tillamook Fire and Rescue and the Tillamook County Medical Examiner.

illamook County Board of Commissioners reopened vehicle access on the beach at Tierra Del Mar on a trial basis during a meeting Wednesday, Aug. 26. The reopening is meant to help alleviate ongoing parking issues in south Tillamook County. Tillamook County Sheriff Jim Horton said the ongoing issues in south Tillamook County continue to be problematic, particularly in Cape Kiwanda, Tierra Del Mar and the Sandlake Recreation Area. The sheriff’s office has changed their patrol schedule to put more deputies on the road. While parking on the beach in Pacific City remains closed, the sheriff’s office continues to support the dory fleet parking.

Headlight file photo In March, due to COVID-19, the commissioners closed vehicle access in Cape Kiwanda and Tierra Del Mar to try to offset the flood of visitors. Vehicles are being pushed out to secondary streets and residential areas. Horton said it is time to look at some options and give citizens a break from tourists congregating in one area. “My recommendation would be to open just Tierra Del Mar on a limited trial basis,” Horton said. Commissioner Mary Faith Bell said there had been concerns of inadequate restroom facilities and trash receptacles across the county. There are additional dumpsters and porta-potties throughout the county now. In Tierra Del Mar, there are now three or four porta-potties. “We hope that the addition of porta-potties and garbage service will help mitigate some of the gross effects of a large number of people being here and prepare us for a later date,” Bell said. “I know we have redirected all of the resources of the sheriff’s department to parking
issues in south Tillamook County,” Bell said. In the short term, if there is anything to help mitigate these issues before Labor Day weekend, we should try, Bell added. Commissioner David Yamamoto said people in Pacific City could park at the Pacific City boat ramp, Nestucca Valley Community Alliance and Kiawanda Community Center when the Cape Kiwanda parking lot is full. Effective Friday, Aug. 28, the beach access in Tierra Del Mar will be open to the public seven days per week. The board of commissioners authorized Horton to close the beach access at his sole discretion at any time in the interest of public safety. Analysis says Edge Cable can leave materials in ocean F

acebook has released its environmental report on the drilling accident of the Jupiter Cable System in Tierra Del Mar. According to the analysis, the recommended action is to leave the materials in place. Edge Cable Holdings, LLC, a subcontractor of Facebook, notified the Oregon Department of State Lands (DSL) on April 28 of the snapped drill pipe, which was being replaced at a depth that ranged from 40-69 feet. Approximately 1,100 feet of drill pipe, a drill tip, two tools for drill steering and tracking, and approximately 6,500 gallons of drilling fluid were abandoned in the ocean. “It was a very unusual event,” said

Tillamook Families, After reading the most current guidance provided by the Oregon Department of Education and Governor Kate Brown, monitoring the current situation of increase in cases in Tillamook County, the review of parent and staff surveys, and much deliberation, the Tillamook School District has decided to start the 2020-2021 school year utilizing the Comprehensive Distance Learning Model (CDL) for trimester one. We know that this will
provide many of you a great deal of relief and others will be very frustrated. We know this is going to create hardship for many working families. We also know that the cases of COVID-19 in Oregon continue to escalate as do the number of cases in the state’s youngest populations. In recent meetings with state officials, we were told that when we return to in-person learning, even with the required safety protocols, physical distancing, cohorting requirements, and contact tracing, we would have virus outbreaks. Repeated opening and closing of classrooms and schools would continue until the virus is better contained. The unpredictability of opening and closing schools over and over is not an effective way to operate a school system. It has the potential of causing trauma for our students as well as putting a strain on families of not knowing from one day to the next or week to the next whether school will be open or closed. In addition, reopening schools to in-person interaction would contribute to the spread of the virus in our community. Please know that CDL will be very different from the virtual program that we were forced to quickly implement in the spring. Below please find some of the big changes we will be making based on your input and state guidance: • Students will receive grades as they typically would on their grade level report cards at the conclusion of each trimester. • Students will be required to check in with teachers on a daily basis for social-emotional check-ins and academic support. Attendance will be taken. • We will utilize only one learning management system for coursework. CANVAS will offer a login page where students and parents can access all of the remote learning resources they need. Acellus will be utlized as the online curriculum for students in grades K-12. This will be supplemented by classroom teachers to ensure instruction is aligned with state standards and district-adopted curriculum. • Packets will only be sent on rare occasions for specific students. • Training will be offered to families for the use of both CANVAS and Acellus. • Staff will be reporting to buildings daily. Teachers will have office hours allowing parents and students the opportunity to seek individual help. • Small focus groups (students on IEP’s and 504’s, students receiving ELD services, and students participating in Credit Recovery) will be individually supported. • Devices can be checked out for all students in need in grades PreK-12. Schedules for checkout will follow as the start of school approaches. • Opportunities for affordable internet access as well as overall access throughout the community have been a local focus over the summer. As more information is available we will share that with you. We know that, even with these adjustments, it will not be the same as having students in our seats in our schools. For now, we must err on the side of caution to protect our kids and our staff. It will continue to be our goal to get students back in our schools as soon as we believe it can safely be done. We hope we can reevaluate the situation in late November and plan for in-person education. Decisions will continue to be based on Oregon Department of Education and other state level guidance as well as the most current Tillamook COVID data. We appreciate your support and understanding in this sensitive issue. Thank you in advance for helping your children understand, and for supporting them through these challenging times. DSL had requested that Edge Cable provide an analysis of potential health, safety and environmental impacts due to the presence of the equipment, as well as a geotechnical survey. The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department also required Edge Cable to provide an independent hazard analysis, evaluating potential impacts to the economic, scenic and recreational values of the ocean shore. After consulting with relevant state agencies, Tillamook County and the Army Corps of Engineers, Facebook commissioned an independent hazard study conducted by ERM-West, Inc. and peer reviewed by Geosyntec Consultants, Inc. Nikki Payne, from ERM, said the study was conducted and analyzed by a team, including a toxicologist and local geologist. The team analyzed the current situation. Regarding recovery options, Payne said ERM spoke with several drilling companies, and found using HDD drilling to recover the remaining materials is a nonviable option given the low probability of success, as the drill bit would need to perfectly align with the 6-inch bore pipe 520 feet from the shore. The second option of dredging from the seafloor would result in extensive environmental impacts from sediment excavation, anchoring and using vessels and barges over

Oregon Coast Alliance filed on Aug. 26 a Notice of Intent to sue Edge Cable Holdings under the Clean Waters Act, on or after the 60th day of the notice, in Oregon Federal District Court. The lawsuit will allege the Edge Cable has violated and remains in violation of the Clean Waters Act and will seek mandatory injunctive relief, requiring Edge Cable to comply with and pay civil penalties up to the amount of $55,800 per day, per violation. For this reason, the recommended environmentally preferred alternative is to leave the remaining materials in place. “We think that’s the best course of action,” Salvadori said. Garibaldi City Council during a special meeting Monday, Aug. 24, tabled the appointment of a commissioner to the planning commission until more applications are submitted. As of Aug. 24, Paul Daniels, former city councilor, was the only applicant. City of Garibaldi voters recalled Daniels from the city council on July 14. “Having been a resident of Garibaldi since 1992 and serving the community throughout that time, I am very devoted to the best interests of Garibaldi,”
Daniels wrote in his application letter to city council. “I have served on the city council, Port of Garibaldi, Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad, Garibaldi Museum to name a few.” Public comments at the meeting centered on the potential appointment of Daniels to the planning commission, after being recalled, with citizens voicing concerns and outrage. I have friends who are Republicans - good people. Why hadn’t I heard anything from them about children in cages, Russian interference in our elections today, exploding the deficit, racial injustice? Now more and more prominent Republicans, of the old Republican party, not the Trump party, are finally stepping up to voice their deep concern about the trajectory of America, domestically and abroad. These folks are as horrified and concerned about the above, plus lack
of leadership with handling Covid19, testing, PPEs; 180,000+ Americans dead; the move to eliminate social security and Medicare; millions unemployed; our standing in the world and in the eyes of our allies and so much more. I am thankful they are out there helping to educate their fellow Republicans about the absolute seriousness of where we are as a republic - I do not want to live under autocratic rule. I do not want the People’s House for sale, anymore than our precious national parks and wildlife refuges. I don’t want more and more dividing of our citizenry through fear, but to find where we can come together. Work for real equality, real respect for one another and recognizing how diversity makes us stronger. I can’t be off the mark too much if all those high powered Republican strategists feel the very same.

From Dr. Tom Frieden, former director of the CDC, now President/CEO of Resolve To Save Lives: “When we all wear masks, we are all safer. Masks are among the cheapest, simplest, most effective ways for countries to fight this virus and get the economy running again. Masks matter. Except in a few places, mask-wearing is the ‘new normal’ for the foreseeable future.” Please wear a mask. Help keep one other safe. Secondly, make a plan to VOTE. Send your ballot in as soon as possible to make sure it gets counted. Look for 24-hour ballot drop boxes in front of the library and the court house. Vote for America.

No other business or corporation is required to do this. At this time there are billions of dollars (from Post Office profits) in this fund. Peter DeFazio, a US Representative from Multnomah county has introduced in the House a bill to rescind this requirement. If that were to happen, the post office would not be broke. Also Congress has neglected to appropriate more than $ one billion that it owes the USPS for the discounted mailing service the agency provides to nonprofits, local newspapers and disabled Americans. So the post office is only “going broke “ because of the actions of our corrupt congress - not because

his week we will cover the second half of the alphabet for the conclusion of the ABC edition of the library column! We will highlight a different library service we offer for every letter…all the way to Z! We start with L this week, and L stands for Library2Go, our resource for downloadable e-books and audiobooks that you can put on your portable device and enjoy anywhere! The letter M is one of my favorites because it stands
for Mango Languages, our language-learning software. By creating a login, you can choose from over 70 different languages to study from the comfort of your own home, using a computer, smart phone or tablet. N is for news, and we certainly have you covered there. Our Gale OneFile news database gives you access to more than 2,300 major regional, national, and local newspapers. While we are talking about newspapers, O represents the Oregonian. Did you realize that we have the Oregonian database that allows you to read today’s paper online using your computer?
P represents the PacificNorthwest section of our collection. We have a vast selection of books written about our history, geography, geology, our plant and animal life…and so much more. The letter Q stands for Q-books. This is what we call the big, beautiful, oversized “coffee table books” that you can check out. We keep them in a special place in our library since most of them are too large to fit on normal shelving. R is for the many rooms we have available for meetings. When we are open, we have everything from our giant community rooms to smaller study rooms. All
you need to reserve them is your library card! The letter S represents the SpanishLanguage materials we have available for checkout. Also, keep an eye out for our upcoming giveaway of free children’s books in Spanish! T stands for Teen Services. We have a great selection of books for teens that we categorize as Young Adult. We also normally have teen activities and events on our program schedule, and we are very excited to resume those in the near future. The letter U represents the many colorful ukuleles we have available for you to check out. Ukuleles are one of the
most unique items we make available to our patrons! V is for our Value Line database, for those of you who like to keep in touch with the best investment and money management tips. Value Line is the most trusted and prestigious name in the investment field. The letter W is for our strong and reliable Wi-Fi signal, available 24/7. If you see someone sitting outside one of our libraries while we are closed, they are probably accessing our Wi-Fi. X stands for “X-marks the spot”…one for each of our six physical library locations, conveniently located around our county.
Those towns that do not have a library can enjoy our weekly bookmobile stops in their communities. Y stands for Youth Services. Making sure youngsters have all the books they can handle is a big priority of ours. And finally, the letter Z! If you guessed Zombie movies, you are wrong. While we do have zombie movies, we would prefer to think Z stands for the ZEST our employees have to make your next visit to the library a productive and enjoyable one. September is ‘Suicide Prevention’ month Janeane Krongos Tillamook Family Counseling Center
S
uicide is a death that is self-inflected and intentional. This form of death cannot be predicted by a person’s age, gender, or race. Every year thousands of lives are lost by suicide. For example, in the year 2018, there were 48,000 people who died by suicide in the United States. In Oregon, suicide has become the 8th leading cause of death, surpassing other causes of diseases such as influenza and chronic liver disease. Each day in Oregon, there is an average of 2 lives that are lost by suicide. While these facts about suicide may be disheartening, suicide is a
public health problem that is preventable. September has been designated as Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. During this month-long observance, health professionals, suicide survivors, and community members come together to promote awareness of this issue. I encourage you to take some time this month to promote suicide prevention. In this column you will find a few reliable online suicide prevention resources. There are many reliable online resources that you can learn about suicide prevention. One online resource that I would recommend is the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s website. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is
a nonprofit organization that helps to protect people from health, safety, and security threats. One resource that was published by this organization is a suicide prevention factsheet. This resource can be accessed by visiting: https://www.cdc. gov/violenceprevention/ suicide/prevention.html. Another helpful place to learn about suicide prevention is the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). The AFSP is a national nonprofit organization that educates the public about suicide prevention, funds research,
advocacy, and mental health policies. On the AFSP website, you can learn about health prevention, suicide warning signs, suicide risk factors, and how you can make a difference in your community. The AFSP website can be accessed by visiting: https://afsp.org/. The final online resource that I will discuss in this column is the Oregon Health Authority (OHA). This statewide agency is a planning, funding, and monitoring entity for the healthcare of many Oregonians. OHA is a great place to get regional suicide
prevention information. On their website, you can find information about regional suicide prevention training and access downloadable suicide prevention publications. You can access the OHA’s suicide prevention page by visiting: https:// www.oregon.gov/oha/PH/ PREVENTIONWELLNESS/SAFELIVING/SUICIDEPREVENTION/Pages/index.aspx. I hope that some of the resources that I had mentioned in this column will be helpful to you. To ensure you get the most up to date and accurate resources online, it would be helpful to be selective on what resources you review. Federal entities, state agencies, reputable nonprofit organizations, and educational institutions often have the most current
and accurate information regarding suicide prevention. Before I sign off on this column I want to assure you that you are never alone in a moment of crisis. There are many caring professionals that can help in your time of need. Tillamook County has a 24/7 crisis hotline that can be reached by calling (503)842-8201 or (800)962-2851. The Tillamook County crisis hotline is staffed by trained behavioral health professionals from the Tillamook Family Counseling Center. If you are outside Tillamook County, there is a National Suicide Lifeline that is also open 24/7. To reach the National Suicide Lifeline you can call (800)273-8255.

illamook County has a population of approximately 26,000, which our first responders can barely provide services for. Tourism has increased year after year and this year, we are overwhelmed. It was estimated that our population increased to as much as 100,000 on the weekend of August 14, 2020. This number far exceeds the capacity to provide public safety in Tillamook County and I suspect this is true of many of our counties and cities. I know the northern

three coastal counties have been flooded by tourists. Our law enforcement, fire, and search and rescue departments have been working tirelessly for months and are strained to the point of collapse. The Oregon State Police (OSP) has historically been an essential partner in patrol and criminal investigation in Tillamook County. Sheriff Jim Horton said that early in his career, OSP had 12 to 15 troopers stationed in Tillamook. However, in the intervening years, the OSP presence in Tillamook has been drastically reduced due to budget cuts and there are now only two or three
troopers and a sergeant working out of Tillamook, which effectively means that local law enforcement spanning the county has been reduced by at least ten full time positions. As the population in Portland grows, tourism will continue to grow. The Sheriff’s Office is largely funded by the county general fund and there are no funds to expand the increased public safety needs
of tourism. We have cut staff positions over the past six years in many general fund departments at the county, and we cannot incur additional cuts and continue to provide mandated services. I propose that we be allowed to use Transient Lodging Tax (TLT) revenue to support public safety services. Currently, the statute allows 30 percent of the tax revenue for general
government purposes and Tillamook County voters approved that the county’s 30 percent share go to funding road improvements. This represents one fourth of the road department’s budget and does not even come close to covering the department’s needs. The remaining 70 percent of TLT revenue received by the county is required by state law to fund tourism promotion or tourismrelated facilities. I propose that this arbitrary allocation of tax dollars be amended to allow public safety to be a tourist-related expense. Legislative legal is reviewing the draft bill for the
2021 Legislative Session. When I visit other communities and pay the transient lodging tax, I want it spent to keep my family safe and make our stay as enjoyable as possible. I do not want the tax I pay spent on promotion when public safety is underfunded. Finally, the beaches, forests, and a very large portion of Tillamook County belong to the state and federal government. They belong to all Oregonians to share. All I am asking is that the state give us the tools to provide a safe place to share for our visitors. Please join me in supporting this bill.

ALSO - A friend of mine works for the Post Office He told me about a year ago that they had a big meeting at the P.O., and employees were told that in about ten years the Post Office would be privatized. He also told
me that all mail was to be sent to CHINA to be sorted. That I can’t believe. But that is what he told me. A week ago he told me that 10 big sorting machines have been removed from Oregon. He felt that that was going to create a giant backlog and he was probably going to work a lot of overtime around the Thanksgiving,Christmas and New Year. The sorting machines were busy - why did they remove them?

The Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) is proposing to dramatically decrease timber harvests on Oregon’s state forests with a Habitat Conservation Plan that will reduce harvests on the North Coast (Forest Grove, Tillamook, and Clatsop State Forests) by 25-30 percent. This will result in $27.6 million per year of lost revenue to the state and rural counties, not to mention the hundreds of millions of dollars in lost income and opportunities for local businesses. t is very rare when I write my first column for September that will be published before Labor Day. But this year has been strange all the way around. As I look back on previous September columns, I see a lot that discuss Autumn in the garden. But few seem to discuss rain or the lack thereof. This year, I am skipping the normal autumnal topics (I love that word “autumnal” and so rarely
find a place to use it) and go instead to the fact that once again we have had a lovely summer but with very little rain. In fact, I can only remember a really good rain in the third week of August. Mother Nature is so much better than I am at soaking to the roots of plants. I am not really complaining about the lack of rain as the plants have enjoyed the abundant sunshine.

ancy A. Bush, born March 19, 1933 to Bernard and Beatrice Stanfill in Portland, Oregon passed away the evening of Aug.wr 18, 2020 at home in Pacific City, Oregon. She is survived by her children, Robert (Joan), Randy, Richard (Deanie) and Rebecca (Craig); eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Robert W. Bush, her husband of 67 years, preceded her in death May of 2018. Nancy volunteered with the Tigard Chamber of Commerce and for several years was a school bus driver with the Tigard School District before she and Bob moved to Pacific City in 1986. Bob and Nancy began commercial fishing in 1971 out of their dory boat “Short Shot” which inspired their move to Pacific City in 1987. Nancy was the first fisherwoman to join the ranks of the Pacific City Dorymen’s Association. After moving to Pacific City, she wrote for the Tillamook Headlight Herald in the Fencepost section for South County Tillamook. She also volunteered with the Pacific City Chamber of Commerce. In 2005 she was Volunteer of the Year. For many years, Nancy was the Chairwomen of the annual Dory Days Parade. She would often dress up to be in the parade with her young grandchildren. She never missed an opportunity

scent but boast a bluegrey leaf that is very pretty and, as a bonus, it is deer-resistant. The French flowers have a little tuft on the top, giving this plant its alternate name of fringed lavender. As an Anglophile, my favorite is English lavender, although it originally came from the Mediterranean, too. This is the scent we most often think of as true lavender. Named after two wellknown English gardens, the ‘Munstead’ and ‘Hidcote’ are most used and easy to find. Lesser-known and lesser-used varieties of Portuguese and Egyptian lavender are from the western Mediterranean and seem to have a stronger, more distinctive scent than even the English lavender. These might be harder to find unless you go to specialty nurseries. Since much of our nursery shopping this year has been on-line, seeds or plants from reputable internet nurseries may be the way to go to find the Portuguese and Egyptian types. Lavenders can get pretty leggy if you don’t do a light pruning every other year. The pros say not to cut into the woody parts as they won’t regrow, but I have had success cutting a bit off the tops and a little into the wood. New leaves will grow lower on the plant in a few weeks. Another of my favorite Mediterranean plants is rosemary. Rosemary leaves are favorite culinary herbs
to dress up and celebrate. Nancy and Bob were selected Grand Marshall of the Parade in 2002. Nancy was successful in completing a biography called “Short Shot.” There is a copy in Pacific City Library, and the Kiawanda Community Center. as well as being used for medicinal purposes. It is considered a shrub and can grow to about 3 feet. But there is also prostrate rosemary that loves a good rock wall or large planter to hang from. Rosemary leaves can easily be dried for cooking, or used fresh. It is a great source of Vitamin B-6, calcium and iron and gives a nice flavor to chicken and fish. It also has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compounds and is said to be good for preventing memory loss. This from MedicalNewsToday.com: the aroma can improve concentration and mood and contains carnosic acid which may help brain health, especially in stroke victims. It is also pretty in the garden, easy to grow and smells good. What’s not to like? Phlomis -or Jerusalem sage- is a fun plant to grow. These summer bloomers are native to Lebanon and Turkey and have green-grey leaves that look like sage but are not edible nor fragrant. They bloom with yellow or pink-mauve flowers on stalks and are an evergreen perennial shrub. They do like sun and well-drained soil, though, so add some sand or grit into the hole before planting. This shrub can get a little unruly but is easily pruned in the spring to keep them in control. The seeds can be harvested in the fall after they dry, or this can also be propagated by division in the spring. Looking to easily-grown Mediterranean plants can certainly add some interest and scent to the gardens even in a dry summer.
Tony James McClaskey Sept. 30, 1957 - Aug. 4, 2020

n August 4th, 2020 Tony James McClaskey passed away peacefully at home due to complications from a recent surgery at age 62. He had been a resident of Tillamook County since 1963 and was co-owner of the Mar-Clair Inn. Tony was born September 30th, 1957 in The Dalles, OR to Don and Teek McClaskey of Arlington, OR. He was the youngest of three children raised in Arlington and Tillamook. After graduating from Tillamook High School in 1975 he spent a few years attending Bend Community College and worked at Sunriver. After college, he moved back to Tillamook to help his brother Mark manage the family motel in 1980, and in 1990 he and his brother purchased the motel from their parents and worked together until ODOT bought the property
for a highway improvement project. Tony married Debbi Stevens (Johnson) on November 22, 2002 and they started a life together. Tony was a devoted son and spent years caring for his mother alongside his brother Mark and cousin Steven. Tony was passionate about his rescue dogs Sailor and Axel, and enjoyed gardening, visiting with neighbors and friends, spending time with family, and in his younger years, was a skilled motocross racer who garnered several trophies. Tony is survived by his wife Debbi McClaskey, her two daughters, Kendra (James) Gilmer and Ashleigh Stevens. His sister-in-law Vickie Johnson, Brother Mark McClaskey and his wife Linda, his cousin Steven McClaskey, and sister Cindy Mayer of Bend, OR. Nieces and nephews: Erin Kay Homan, Bend. Thea Bergeron, Portland. Ebon Bergeron, Tillamook. Georgia Mayer, Portland. Will Mayer, Colorado. Per his wishes, no services will be held. ichael E Lueb, 69 passed away peacefully on Wednesday 8/26/20 at home. Michael was born in Milwaukie, OR, he was the youngest of 7 children. Michael enjoyed being
around people and was respected by all. Even though Michael was retired, he did a route for the Headlight Herald each week with his wife Elaine. He took pride in his work and will be missed by his Headlight family. There will be no services. There will be a Celebration of Life at a later date. He is survived by his wife, Elaine of 48 years, sons Stuwart, Steven and daughter Rebecca, six Grand kids and one great granddaughter and three brothers.

ldine Marvella Anderson, was born to Carl Israel Anderson and Ethel Julia Anderson on December 27th 1930 at Theodore B. Wilcox Memorial Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland, Oregon. In 1995, She moved to the Marie Hill Center in Tillamook, OR. There she worked in the ATE Program there for a number of years. She lived a happy and healthy life at there until her passing on July 31, 2020. She is preceded in death by her mother Ethel J. Anderson; her father Carl I. Anderson; an older sister who expired at birth, and her younger brother in
2016. She is survived by her Sister-in-Law, Mary L. Anderson. As well as her oldest nephew Martin Anderson, nieces Trudy Hobizal, Judy Sprague, Cheryl Kingston, Janice Johnson, Rose Jewell, Mary J. Anderson, and nephew Mark Anderson. Graveside services were held on August, 22nd at 10am, at Bethany Memorial Cemetery, Warren Oregon. he Thompsons recently added a new member to the family. No, not a great-grandchild, but a two-year-old canine companion named Buddy. He is a mutt, likely a mix of terrier and pointer, and was adopted from a local shelter. A handsome young fellow, white with tan spots, Buddy is getting used to the household and the Thompsons to him. He’s energetic, but the Thompsons’ daughter gave them a harness that allows them to maintain control of him during their outings. You’ll see Jerry
and Sonya out walking their new dog several times a day. Wonder if Buddy knew he was signing up for such a vigorous exercise class? A new street is being put in just as you come into Cape Meares; it looks as if it will be 11th St. NW. It starts at Bayocean Road and ends about 60 feet to the south; perhaps it is just enough entry for one house to be built back there. always a treat, and a couple of Cape Meares residents participated. Karen and Steve Walz backpacked on the Pacific Coast Trail near Mt. Jefferson, Oregon, and saw lots of flora and fauna.
There were fields of three colors of bright paintbrush, purple aster, lupine, fireweed, columbine, and many other beautiful flowers. One that the Walzes weren’t familiar with was explorer’s gentian, a wonderful blue flower that almost looks like a closed-up tulip. Wild mountain blackberries were plentiful, and the local wildlife (and humans) enjoyed them. Hikers were demonstrating good pandemic social distancing practices, and hot temperatures made glacier run-off stream crossings interesting. High lake waters were refreshing and almost too cold to swim in. It was a great way for the Walzes to spend time together in a dif-
ferent venue. We’re having a fun little round robin here in Cape Meares. A neighbor of Sonya Thompson, Marilyn, gave her a set of used books to read. Sonya passed them to me, I passed them to Captain Pete, he plans on passing them along to fisherman Steve… they are an unusual kind of mystery. They are fishing mysteries! The series is set in Loon Lake, Wisconsin, where they fish for water creatures we don’t have here: muskies, walleye, and pike. The protagonists are a retired dentist and a female chief of police. Special people are those born in August!”. What a fun time we had for Amber’s birthday last week. We visited her at her home, took her to downtown Milwaukie for a to-go Hawaiian meal, we had a picnic at the library, while I played Hawaiian ukulele music; then we sanded and painted a desk that one of her neighbors had on their front lawn marked free after their garage sale. It turned out absolutely beautiful. Her library/office in her home is really turning out nice. What a great time the three of us always have together. I am truly blessed. Dale surprised me last week. After an exhausting day of yard work, Dale took pity on me. The next day he took me up to Astoria for lunch at Bowpickers. It was delicious. Then later that day I drove into town to do some banking, and stopped by Simply Charming to say hi to Kim Tackett. Instead I had a visit with her husband, Steve. I am hoping to plan a jam with Steve at Simply Charming, someday

soon. But life keeps getting in the way. After that visit, I stopped by Etcetera and was going to visit with Terri Michel, but alas, she was too busy. Well, maybe next time. Dale picked me lots of huckleberries and blackberries this week. I froze all of them, and perhaps I will surprise him with a pie someday soon. Have I told you how much I love summer? Well, I truly do. Is anyone else having trouble with cobwebs all over their house? They seem to be really nasty this year. I hose them down, wash all the windows, then the next week they are back. Maybe it is time to repaint.
Victoria Houston’s Loon Lake fishing mysteries. One of the quotes she cites at the start of a chapter: “The fishing was so good, I thought I was there yesterday” (Dave Engerbretson). We Steens completed a big pandemic project. As avid beachcombers, we have always wondered if big winter storms from years past had tossed glass floats up into the dune grass. We took seven outings on Bayocean Spit this summer, completely covering every mile of the foredunes from Cape Meares to the south jetty, but alas found no glass floats. Oh well, at least we got our exercise!
Perhaps that will help. I am still trying to find out more information on the SOLVE Beach Cleanup this fall. I have a message into Zandra. She never lets me down. Oh! She just sent me the info I needed! The Rockaway Beach Lions Club will be hosting the beach cleanup on Saturday, September 19th at 10am. It is at the Lions Club building in Rockaway Beach. Masks are required and it is online sign up only. Bring your gloves, sanitizer and any garbage pickup device you may have. hristina Hollandsworth, a truly unparalleled woman, died Thursday August 27th from complications of breast cancer. Tragically she was only 31 years old. Hollandsworth, and her two adorable daughters Penelope Hollandsworth (3), and Georgia Hollandsworth (1). Her amazing parents Gabrielle and Greg Parson, and her dear sister Andrea Parson. Along with so many much-loved family and friends. Christina was born at Tuality hospital in Hillsboro Oregon on September 30th, 1988. She was raised on Main Street and attended Hillsboro High School. She jokingly referred to herself as “The most Hillsboro person you’ve ever met.” She met Andrew in 2006 and as fate would have it, they were married four years later in Hillsboro on Main Street at the Venetian Theatre. Christina will be laid to rest in Hillsboro exactly 10 years to the day of her wedding anniversary. A serendipitous way to bring beautiful closure to this incredible journey. In her professional life, Christina was an immensely talented hair stylist. In 2012 Christina and Andrew decided together to move to Los Angeles. While there she opened her own salon in Beverly Hills and lived what was lovingly referred to as her “rebellious phase”. Much to her family’s surprise she ditched her pearls for ink and tattooed most of her right arm. The most prominent of her tattoos
is a beautiful compass eternally pointing home to the Northwest. Being much too far from home and all of their loved ones, Christina and Andrew moved back to Portland Oregon in 2015. In the last five years of her life Christina truly thrived. She had two beautiful daughters and successfully balanced being a full-time stylist and a tremendous mother and wife. Christina loved fully and in turn will be missed fully. Those who know her best know that she brought laughter with her everywhere she went. She was cheerful, beautiful, and devastatingly cool. We feel sorrow because we felt such joy in her presence. Without a doubt Christina lived her life her way, with not a single care how anyone felt about it. How lucky we all were to get to feel her genuine warmth. And even amongst all of the sadness that comes with losing someone so young and full of life there is also so much joy in the memory of her beautiful dimpled smile. Christina wanted us all to feel that joy. You will always live on in our hearts my sweet darling girl. met Pat Sears the first winter I lived in South County, so it was 1993. I had put an ad in the Headlight Herald seeking housekeeping work and Pat hired me to clean, I think it was every other Tuesday. The arrangement lasted until I took my job at Nestucca Valley schools a year or two later. Over the years, my life overlapped Pat’s often. When I needed funds to resume higher education after my divorce, she was the person who contacted me about the Esther Milne Scholarship, and I enjoyed the annual fundraiser for that cause in her beautiful garden for many years. For more than a decade we have attended Hebo Women’s Book Club to-

About this time each year, Jody is usually so busy dealing with last-minute Pearl & Oyster Festival details that Kin has to settle for a party to which the whole town is invited, and ends with dancing on the tennis courts downtown – but this year has been different. With no festival, Jody and Kin decided to take a trip to celebrate Kin’s birthday. Safe travels to them! There have been A LOT of tourists here this summer, but things here in town seem to be relatively calm. It’s great to see so many neighbors out walking, with or without four-legged friends, enjoying the wonderful weather we’ve

Pat passed away August 18; she will be fondly remembered and sorely missed. Our hearts go out to all who grieve this loss. Speaking of fabulous local friends, a local artist, also an Esther Milne Scholarship recipient, recently posted a yard sign that she created on social media. It says, “Imagine a UNITED States.” I loved the bipartisan call for political unity. My friend, who prefers anonymity, agreed to me using her words (and hiring her artistic talent to paint them) as a mural on
the exterior wall of my carport at home. I am thrilled with the result. On the subject of civic duty, remember to register to vote in the general election. The cut off is October 12. Special events include an enormous rummage sale in the parking lot at Kiawanda Community Center (KCC) from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday, September 5. We who have de-cluttered our homes during Covid-19 are invited to price sell-able items and deliver them to the center between noon and 3 p.m. on Thursday September 3 or Friday, September 4. Proceeds (and rent from vendors’
tables) will benefit KCC, which has been financially crippled by the pandemic. The free Cloverdale Cruise-in also happens on Saturday. It’s planned from noon until 5 p.m. Donations will be collected toward a complete set of “Jaws-of-Life” tools for Nestucca Rural Fire Protection District. The cruise-in will not include live music this year as “organizers seek eliminate congregation into groups” due to Covid 19 concerns according to publicity materials. We who wish to may experience the “cruise-in as a cruise through.” Let’s plan on joining the fun, and budget a generous donation to be part of a good cause. Remember that Tilla-
mook County Habitat for Humanity is sponsoring a free series of financial education classes to help households ready themselves for home ownership. Until I moved here, I had never seen a real pelican. My grandparents lived near Pelican Rapids, MN, but the only pelican I ever saw there was a big statue
in the park. That’s why I especially enjoyed watching mother pelicans guiding their youngsters on the bay between Bay City and Garibaldi this past week.
Have you noticed how many have been out there? They are a great reminder that while the surge of tourists will relax after this next weekend, we have the for-

Despite some staffing challenges, work at the City goes on, our volunteer firefighters continue to respond to dozens of calls, and we’re getting better at hosting virtual meetings. In the near future a committee of city council members and citizens will be interviewing applicants for Public Works Director, as well as City Recorder/Treasurer. Since the majority of our council and committee members have full time jobs, their service to the City is especially commendable, and it amazes me how much time and energy they are able to invest in our fine town every month.
