he Tillamook County Fair is finally here and it all happens Aug. 10 - 13 this week. With a little something for everyone, this year’s fair is not to be missed. Open 10 a.m. – 10 p.m. with the Tillamook County Fair’s 2022 theme, “Hay Bales & Cow Tails.” The Tillamook County Fair’s carnival area opens at noon each day, with a variety of rides and games for kids big and small. Ride bracelets and fair tickets can be purchasede on the Fair’s website:tillamookfair.com Pari-Mutuel Horse Racing will again be providing four days of racing excitement, with races starting around 1 p.m. daily, Wednesday through Saturday. Brad’s World Reptiles will be a fun focal point in Fair Acres, along with some of the favorite kids’ activities like Farmer For A Day and educational displays from local school districts. The Tillamook County Fair’s Courtyard stage will host free entertainment for fair-goers each day, with Brad’s World Reptiles demonstrations, ice cream tasting contests, Brian Bon’s Powerhouse Percussive Dance, and more. Check the Fair Tab in this issue or the Fair’s Visitors Guide for a complete list of fair activities, event times, grandstand and courtyard schedules. The Fair’s Concert Series kicks off the Wednesday with Stone In Love, a Journey tribute band. Thursday’s night concert showcases The Marshall Tucker Band. And rounding out the concert series Friday is headliner Ryan Hurd. All concerts are free with your Fair admission. Concerts are held in the Averill Arena Grandstands starting at 8 pm Wednesday through Friday. Of course, you don’t want to miss the traditional Pig-N-Ford races, happening at 5:30 p.m. each night in the Grandstands. Saturday night culminates the end of the Fair with the annual Demolition Derby at 7:30 p.m. And what would a Fair be with-

Big Cedar Tree Boardwalk gives access to Rockaway Beaches’ oldest residents T

he old growth cedar swamp area was annexed to the City of Rockaway Beach in 1980 in an effort to preserve the lush, diverse environment and for all members of the community to be able to visit and experience an old-growth forest. While options for hiking can sometimes be challenging for families with strollers and for those with disabilities, this ADA (Americans with Disabilities) complaint walkway runs from Highway 101, straight to the 154 foot cedar tree that is Rockaway Beach’s oldest resident. “It’s basically exactly the same way it was 100 years ago, you get to experience all of the diverse nature without getting muddy,” Bill Hassell, the ambassador of the Rockaway Beach Big Cedar Tree Boardwalk said. The area also contains many large trees native to the area and a wide variety of indigenous flora, with Heitmiller Creek running throughout. According to Hassell, the boardwalk itself is 3000 feet long from parking lot to the tree, around the half way point there is a picnic table and some benches for visitors to enjoy. The walk is open daylight hours, year round with a paid park-

ing lot that can hold 10 cars and an ADA toilet. The Old Growth Cedar Preserve Project was completed in June 2020. “The entire thing was done with respect for nature,” Hassell said. Contractors ensured nothing was damaged during construction by using unique diamond-shaped piers. The Big Cedar Tree has been estimated to be approximately 500-900 years old by the Nature Conservancy Committee. The ongoing theory is that this cedar was among those

Health District secures congressional funding for health center, pharmacy E

fforts by the Nehalem Bay Health District to improve primary health care delivery in north Tillamook County have received a major boost thanks to Oregon Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden. Earlier this year the health district asked to be considered for “congressionally directed funding” to finance a portion of a new primary health care center and pharmacy in Wheeler. Merkley and Wyden announced recently that the requests have been included in proposals approved by the Senate Appropriations Committee where Merkley is a member. The request for $3 million constitutes a major jump start for the district’s funding plan for the new health center/pharmacy. “A new, state of the art health care center and pharmacy will truly be a transformative development in north Tillamook County,” said Marc C. Johnson, President, Nehalem Bay Health District. “The new health center/pharmacy will double the size of the current aging facility, allowing better delivery of services including specialty care, to more residents and visitors. The Nehalem Bay Health District is enormously grateful to Senators Merkley and Wyden for understanding and supporting quality health care close to home in rural Oregon.” ohnson said the district is enormously gratified by the broad com-

Recent heat wave fuels needless drowning, boating deaths in Oregon Drownings and boatingrelated deaths needlessly continue claiming lives in Oregon, recently fueled by a heat wave. The Oregon State Marine Board (OSMB) reported 19 boating-related fatalities in 2021 and the Oregon Health Authority recorded 57 drownings in natural waters in 2020, which is 160% increase from 2019 (35 drownings). Life jackets may have prevented many of these deaths. “Heat waves can exacerbate drownings and accidents,” said Tom Conning, Portland District U.S. Army Corps of Engineers spokesperson. “More people are out on the water, trying to cool off and they don’t always wear life jackets. Men, especially between 17-65 years of age, are the worst about wearing life jackets due to several things, including their arrogance about swimming abilities.” Even when the air temperature is hot, water temperatures in the Pacific Northwest can still cause involuntary gasping and hypothermia, according to Melissa Rinehart, Natural Resources Management chief. “It’s already too late if you fall into the water unexpectedly without a life jacket, even if you know how to

swim,” said Rinehart. “We want everyone to enjoy their time at Corps parks and head home safely. We have over 20 life jacket loaner stations for those who don’t own a life jacket or forget to bring one.” Recreational boatingrelated incidents and deaths are beginning to trend upward with the growth in paddling activities which include kayaks, canoes and stand-up paddleboards. 2020 was a record high number of fatalities, and OSMB staff still note the fatality rate remained higher than the ten-year average. “We take safety so seriously, it’s written into our mission statement,” said Ashley Massey, public information officer for OSMB, the agency that serves recreational boaters in the state. “It makes you wonder, would 11 of the victims who weren’t wearing life jackets have survived if they’d been wearing one? For instance, the U.S. Coast Guard’s nationwide recreational boating statistics from 2020 show nearly 86% of drowning victims would have survived if they’d worn a properly fitting life jacket.” Portland District reservoirs saw three drownings in 2021 at Fern Ridge, Foster and Fall Creek reservoirs. The district averages more than four million visitors per year

at 133 recreation sites across 18 dams and reservoirs in Oregon and Washington. Corps officials urge users to take precautions, such as: Wearing a life jacket: it will help you survive an unexpected fall into the water and can save your life if you become exhausted due to fatigue, waves or current while swimming. Knowing your swimming abilities: swimming in natural waters is different from swimming in a pool, and your swimming ability decreases with age. Expecting the unexpected: if you fall or jump into water that is colder than 70 degrees, you can inhale water from involuntary gasping. Understanding “boater’s hypnosis”: this can slow your reaction time almost as much as if you were legally intoxicated. Eliminating alcohol consumption: Alcohol induces an inner ear condition (caloric labyrinthitis) that can cause you to become disoriented when underwater and not realize which way is up. District staff stress the importance of water safety yearround, but especially during the summer season because that is when most public recreation fatalities occur.

The district envisions construction the new facility on a 1.3-acre parcel directly adjacent to Highway 101 in Wheeler. The district purchased the property last summer and has done substantial preliminary design work, including geotechnical studies and coordination with the city of Wheeler. The new facility is envisioned as a 19,000 square foot medical center and pharmacy on two levels. The new health center will contain expanded exam rooms, specialty suites, staff work and meeting areas and a significantly larger pharmacy. The district is working to finalize an overall funding plan for the health center and pharmacy, including an approach to upgrade and revitalize the existing Nehalem Valley Care Center in Wheeler, a 48-bed skilled nursing facility that is one of the few facilities of its kind on the Oregon coast.

The district intends, once the health center and pharmacy are relocated to the new site in Wheeler, as part of its long-term strategy and subject to community approval, to repurpose a portion of its existing campus to address a critical community need – workforce housing opportunities for workers at the health center and Care Center. The district is also committed to working with the North County Food Bank, currently housed in the old Wheeler hospital, to identify a suitable location for a new food bank facility. The district welcomes community involvement in its planning and development and holds two regular meetings every month – the second Wednesday for health district business and the fourth Wednesday for Care Center business. The public is invited to attend the meetings that are held on Zoom.

t was hot as the dickens, but Cape Meares residents Carolyn and Olli Ollikainen, their son Rob and their niece Kris hiked 18 miles of the Washington Pacific Coast Trail (PCT) in late July. There were bears and sticker bushes to contend with in addition to the heat on this hike, but the trail group conquered all obstacles. Their son Eric brought his family of four from Chelan to meet the hikers in Stehekin for one evening, then took everyone back to Chelan, from where they dispersed. Carolyn has good memories of riding on horseback with her dad

The heat in the valley brought a swarm of visitors to Cape Meares beach. From our living room window, I watched as someone parked a white SUV on the street, popped the back hatch, and began lifting beach paraphernalia out of the car: a big, colorful beach umbrella; a hefty cooler; and sling-back beach chairs. I wonder how they enjoyed their day at the beach. Dense fog carpeted the shore; the fog didn’t lift all day. The sun might have been out and hot just down the road, but we never saw it! This hot weather has had an adverse effect on fishing.

The water in the bay was 71 degrees as we came to the end of the recent heat wave; that’s not what our fall Chinook and coho are looking for. Capt. Pete tells me they will likely stay out in the ocean until the water temperature moderates. A neighbor brought a potentially hazardous road situation to my attention. When the county mower is working along the side of Bayocean Road, there are no flaggers. Coming around a blind corner on that road, you could easily run into the mower. Please drive slowly and keep a sharp eye out on those corners, folks.

have on hand to support our firefighters. More important, though, the Emergency Preparedness meeting offers concrete suggestions for improving your chances in a disaster. Better yet, they showed some of the emergency gear that the fire department recently purchased with funds raised from the T-shirt sales at the Fourth of July celebration. This gear included longburning emergency candles, fire-starter logs, gauze and other bandage-making supplies, and several handy emergency solar-powered flashlights with attachments such as strap cutters, glass breakers for automotive rescue, and more. This equipment, and food as we acquire it, will be

stored in the city’s emergency trailer, located at the eastern end of N 3rd street, near where the new fire station will be constructed. This is outside the tsunami zone and is one of the “safety islands” being set up for providing assistance in the event of a disaster. One consideration, given our damp coastal climate: all supplies need to be stored in plastic bins. Cardboard packages can mildew and mold in the damp, rendering their contents useless or even dangerous. The team is also looking for grants to purchase long-lasting food supplies, essentially MREs that can last for 20 years and require no cooking. The next Emergency Preparedness meeting, sched-

uled for September 7, will kick off Disaster Preparedness Month. That meeting will focus on putting together a “go-bag” for your home or car. The fire department will take you through the list of supplies, focusing on what it takes to support one person for 72 hours after an event. If you already have a go-bag, bring it to the class for a review and suggestions on ways you can extend its usefulness. If you don’t have one, bags and contents will be available to purchase after the class. This will be an important event, and one that every Rockaway Beach resident should plan to attend. “Let’s get everybody we can to our next meeting,”

Chief Hesse said. “Share everywhere you can. If we have a standing-room-only crowd, that’s fine. If we have to split it to two nights, we’ll do it.” Future meetings will cover other aspects of emergency preparedness, including how to use (and acquire) emergency radios, CPR and first aid, and more. “Every meeting we have should have an educational component.” The group plans to have a booth at the Wayside during the Kite Festival, September 16-18. That would be a great time to stop by, get information about how to protect yourself and your loved ones, and network with the emergency preparedness team. See you there!

Coast Guard. Retired Captain Ole Olsen, who recently passed away, was honored for his service, and his family made a beautiful display showing his activities. The Bubble Ball tournament between the Coast Guard and Fire department was so entertaining. There were cornhole games, a water balloon toss, coloring, and a bubble station, followed by a delicious meal prepared by Garibaldi Portside Bistro. Mojo Holler supplied the music for the event. From something in the sea to something that eats green, this year’s apparel will—once again—promote our lifestyle and love for Tillamook. Before the Chamber launched its apparel line nine years ago, many residents

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Educating through hatred I’ve lived in Tillamook Oregon my whole life and I’m starting my Senior Year this year. I’m nervous for the future generations and what will happen to them if we don’t start talking about the hatred and misinformation spread through our high schools about minority groups such as the LGBT+ community and POC communities. I’ve learned a lot from my experience and now that I’m becoming an Adult I feel it’s good to actually bring it up for conversation. Hatred is so prominent in our community but it’s really learned, no one is born with hatred. So to combat that we need to begin educating students about other minorities around the world, even in tiny ways like introducing gay or POC authors in English classes. These things aren’t their entire personality but these key facts really help students feel more comfortable in their environment and showing that it’s a completely normal thing to be queer or a person of color would definitely start helping

with pushing away stereotypes and the hatred stewing in our schools. The manipulation of fear of “others” in our society is doing almost unrepairable damage to our culture and the students growing up in it. Our task as the next generation is to find the middle ground where we recognize our human-ness on spaceship earth. The more my generation and those after me continue to educate and end the fear and hatred toward the communities that need the most help at this time the more I believe that our world will become a healthier and happier place to exist. Mighty Mouse, Underdog, Magilla Gorilla, and The Huckleberry Hound Show. I could go on and on with more of my favorites, but you get the idea. After four solid hours of cartoon-watching, I often grabbed a bologna sandwich and headed out for a day of Saturday afternoon fun. While we sometimes struck up a backyard baseball game or played catch with the football, my go-to activity for Saturday afternoon was a trip to the public library. I really loved my Saturday afternoons in the library where I could browse around and read any book I wanted. That is why I am very happy to announce that the Tillamook County Libraries are all increasing our open hours on Saturdays, effective immediately! That gives you two more hours every Saturday for you to drop in and check out our collections. All of our locations will now open at 10:00 AM and will close at 5:00 PM on Saturdays! Remember that the branch libraries still have to close from 1:00 - 1:30 for lunches. Why do we do that?

County and union policies require us to give staff a lunch after so many hours of working, and since we are not double-staffed at the branches, the only solution is to close up shop for a 30-minute break. Thank you for respecting those lunch periods, and remember, the WiFi still works outside of the libraries 24 hours per day. These new hours will not change any of our scheduled storytimes. At the Main Library in Tillamook, Melanie will have storytime this week and next week, but then is taking a brief storytime break before resuming the regular schedule the week of Labor Day. In Garibaldi, June will hold her storytimes at the normal 3:00 on Friday time slot. Miss Angel continues to offer her Bay City storytimes on Saturdays at 11 a.m.. If you can’t make it to one of our storytime sessions, while it is no substitute for a live storytime with a librarian, you might just try recreating Saturday Morning Cartoons for your children at home. We have lots of the old classic cartoons on DVD that you can check out, or you can bring up just about any of your old favorite shows by doing a search on YouTube. I’m a firm believer in not letting this new generation grow up without knowing such fascinating characters as Yogi Bear, Elmer Fudd, Fred Flintstone, and Daffy Duck. Long live the classic cartoons.

The EPA Can and Must Finish the Job of Protecting Bristol Bay

We’ve just kicked off our 14th season working in southwest Alaska’s famed Bristol Bay region. Justin, the cofounder of Frigate Adventure Travel, began working in the commercial fishery at a young age, just as his family had since the 1960s. Together, Justin and I cut our teeth working as guides at fishing lodges for several years before starting our own business hosting guests from across the globe who travel to experience some of the planet’s best fishing in some of the wildest country that exists. This year marks a new milestone for us, as we purchased and renovated a lodge in Bristol Bay, representing an investment of funds, blood, sweat, tears, and elbow grease. As others have done before us, including many business owners in the commercial and sport fishing industries that call

the Pacific Northwest home, we have tied our future to the health and prosperity of the Bristol Bay fishery. The bounty of Bristol Bay has supported the region’s residents for millennia, a thriving commercial fishery for 140 years and drawn sport anglers and adventure seekers since the 1940s. The Bristol Bay fishery supports 15,000 jobs and contributes $2.2 billion annually to the US economy. While many salmon stocks are facing significant threats from mining and climate change, Bristol Bay continues to produce wild fish in record-shattering numbers. The fishery has been so well managed that last year an astonishing 66 million wild sockeye returned to Bristol Bay – an all – time record… Until this year. The 2022 run isn’t over yet, but already over 76 million wild sockeye have

arrived this season, a testament to pristine habitat and sciencebased management. The Bristol Bay fishery is the backbone of our and many other businesses and of the lives and livelihoods of tens of thousands of people in the region. All of this would be at risk if the proposed Pebble Mine were to be built. Targeted for the headwaters of two of Bristol Bay’s most productive river systems, the dark cloud of this massive proposed gold and copper mine has hung over the region for decades. That’s why a majority of residents of the region and most Alaskans oppose it. Yet, we find ourselves still fighting to protect Bristol Bay from this dangerous and unpopular project. Thankfully, right now the Environmental Protection Agency is working to finalize long-sought protections for

The agency has the authority to veto the Pebble Mine this year, and to provide durable protections for the region from the threat of Pebble or any other scheme to build large mines in Bristol Bay’s headwaters. It is time they listened to the public and did just that as soon as possible. As the 2022 fishing season continues in Bristol Bay, the subsistence and personal use fishers, the commercial fishing industry, sport fishing lodges and tourism operators, and more have a few shared wishes: a safe and successful fishing season and for the EPA to finish the job and put an end to the uncertainty that has threatened Bristol Bay for far too long. Dear Editors of the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association I am writing to thank you for hosting the first Gubernatorial debate of this campaign season. Last Friday, I was watching the debate you hosted and noticed something, or rather, someone, was missing. Of the multiple candidates running for Governor of Oregon, only three of them were invited to attend. A duly elected Libertarian candidate, R Leon Noble, had been excluded and I would like to know why. Mr. Noble earned the nomination of the Libertarian Party of Oregon during their Primary Election held last June. Unlike other “minor” parties, Libertarians do not need to spend millions of dollars on a Primary Campaign in order to ensure

Several people from other districts, ODOT, and Tri-Met were in attendance as well as past and present employees

Was R Leon Noble excluded because he is not a woman? Oh, I have your attention now, don’t I? Or was he excluded because in this day of “Pay to Play” politics, he has yet to raise the millions of dollars already in the coffers of the three female politicians who appeared on the ONPA stage. Furthermore, Ms. Johnson is still in the process of collecting signatures in order to appear on the ballot in November. As mentioned above, Mr. Noble has no such hurdle to overcome, yet he was excluded from the debate. Could it be in this age of political correctness, white privilege, and toxic masculinity, that the ONPA doesn’t want to hear from a white man? Are you trying to silence candidates who haven’t “paid their way” into the Governor’s Race? Or is it Mr. Noble’s ideas that you are afraid of? Are you concerned that the people of Oregon might hear a message that disturbs the status quo? Most Oregonians can agree that neither Ms. Kotek, Ms. Drazen, nor Ms. Johnson represent them. Why can’t those disenfranchised voters hear from a candidate who will? I don’t know about you, but the platform of Safety & Security, Liberty & Equality, and the Economy sounds to me like just what Oregon needs to hear right now. olores, better known as Dolly to her friends and family, was born on December 15th, 1931, in Portland, Oregon, to Alfred and Clairice Kindel. Dolly was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She passed away on July 31st, in Salem, Oregon. On February 23rd, 1951, Dolly married Clarence “Bub” Boquist in Tillamook, Oregon. They bought their first home in Idaville in 1952 and shortly thereafter started growing their family of six children. She and Bub were able to buy his family’s dairy farm in 1960, which provided milk to the Tillamook Creamery. Dolly spent several years focusing on raising the children before she started milking cows, in addition to her other responsibilities. In the early days Dolly would hand sew the kids’ clothing. This skill would eventually lead to her love of quilting and her lifetime membership of the Latimer Quilt Center. Dolly loved to be in the kitchen baking for her family and friends as well as tending to one of her several flower beds. A dear friend once said, “She could spit on dirt and something beautiful would grow” and anyone who knew her, knows that is true! In her free time Dolly cherished meeting up with her friends

on Tuesdays for coffee and lunch on Fridays. Later in life she became an avid reader and would stay up late to read just one more chapter! As much as she loved caring for her family, it was just as important for her to give back to the Tillamook community. For over 20 years Dolly volunteered each Wednesday at the Kit & Caboodle where she made many close friends. She also served meals at the Senior Center, spent nearly 20 years doing the bookkeeping for Juno water and volunteered at the TCCA handing out cheese samples. Dolly and Bub were also very involved in their church, St. John’s United Church of Christ, which they attended for over 30 years. Within the church Dolly participated in the consistory, volunteered with the Grub Club and the annual Ham Dinner. Dolly also gave an unmeasurable amount of time to the Pioneer Museum. She was the secretary for five years, helped run the annual fair booth and was awarded Pioneer of the Year in 2019. Dolly is preceded in death by her husband, Clarence “Bub” Boquist. She is survived by her six children: Vicki Zielinski (John), Steve Boquist (Mary), Susan Boquist (Dennis Person), Daniel Boquist, Tom Boquist and Kathy Boquist. As well as sister-in-law Joan Petty of Tillamook and several grandchildren and nieces and nephews. A service will be held at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Tillamook at 11:00 am on Saturday, August 20th immediately followed by a luncheon. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a Hospice of your choosing.

hirley Theresa Casey died in McMinnville, Oregon on Fri June 3, 2022 at age 92. Shirley was born Shirley Theresa Reidy on September 24, 1929, in Weymouth, Massachusetts, to Charles and Georgie (Edmunds) Reidy. She was the youngest of seven siblings (Audrey Bergeron, Charles Parnell Reidy Jr, John Francis Reidy, Florence Battista, Leonard Joseph Reidy and Thomas William Reidy). Wherever she would go, and someone would ask, “Are you ready?” her instant response would be, with a twinkle in her eye, “I was born Reidy!” She attended Weymouth HS and married her high school sweetheart James Paul Casey (Hubba-Hubba) after waiting 7 years to make room for WWII and college. They wed at Immaculate Conception Church at Weymouth in 1952. They lived in Pennsylvania, Vermont, Michigan, California and Oregon. Shirley always had a fondness for Boston and her Massachusetts

roots. After nearly 40 years of homemaking, Shirley rejoined the workforce at a series of many temporary jobs including census-taker in 2000. Shirley is survived by her five children, Sharon Neelands Good and husband John, James Paul Casey II and wife Karen, Erin Cavit and husband Dennis, Kevin Casey and partner Brian Denhart, and Sean Casey and wife Patti. Shirley has 9 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren. Her husband died in 2008. Shirley was an avid and articulate sports fan preferring the Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers in baseball season and Boston Celtics in basketball season. She enjoyed long beachcombing walks along the Oregon coast where her prize find was a large unbroken green glass Japanese fishing float. Recently Shirley enjoyed doing word-search puzzles. In Lieu of Flowers the family suggests donations be made to Gentog Daycare for Seniors and Children at 11535 SW Durham Rd #C5 Tigard, OR 97224. Shirley loved the time she spent there and they took wonderful care of her. A mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Mary by the Sea Catholic Church in Rockaway Beach, OR on July 16,2022 at 1:00 p.m. Burial Service followed at the American Legion Cemetery in Nehalem, OR.

She resided in Tillamook where she was employed at Tillamook Junior High until the passing of her husband in 1975. She then went back to school and her studies sent her around the

world. She spent her older years in Bend, OR. Margaret peacefully passed away May 17, 2022. She is preceded in death by her husband Harry Edwin Bergren, her parents Guy and Tommy English, her sister Carol Minear and her grandson Thomas Kaiser. She is survived by her children Lori Kaiser, Lisa FetrowBergren and Scott Bergren. Her grandchildren Koren Estakhrian, Peter Kaiser, Allison Kaiser, Harrison Kaiser, Dyut Fetrow, Crystal Harris, Greg Bergren, & Kayla Jenck. Her great-grandchildren Azadeh ,Ellouise, Kaden, Devin, Jada, Chase, Landon, Maeve & Weston. Julie Ann Ridderbusch Oct. 21, 1930 - June 17, 2022

ur family is saddened to announce the passing of Julie Ann Ridderbusch on June 17th. There will never be enough space to tell the story of her life or how very much she was loved. Julie was born on October 21st, 1930, in Tahlequah Oklahoma. Her family moved west

and settled in White Salmon Washington. Julie eventually made her way to Tillamook County. She was a world traveler and a gracious host. She loved to entertain and was well known for her kindness and hospitality. She is survived by many family members including her children Bill Crews, Gary Crews, Joyce Johnstone, and stepdaughter Penny Prueitt. She also leaves behind many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Edward Ridderbusch, her daughter Suzanne Crews, and several siblings. Her life was our blessing, and she will never be forgotten.

Douglas ‘Doug’ Ford Jan. 22, 1967 - July 14, 2022

He married Sherry Hanacrette and that marriage lasted 17 years. They had three boys together, Douglas, Richard and Dustin, and he loved his boys dearly, they were his pride and joy. He is preceded in death by his sister Julie Hugees, his son Dustin, and his father Richard and his granddaughter, Dreama. He is succeeded in life by his mother, Alice, brothers Derek and Grodon, sons Douglas and Richard, and many aunts uncles and cousins. Doug loved people, he loved his time helping out at the Eagles, riding his motorcycle and singing Keroke. OBITUARIES Mike Ellis July 30, 2022

Mike Ellis passed away peacefully at noon on July 30th, 2022, after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. Mike was a well loved man, who was surrounded by family and friends in the days before his passing. Mike had many chapters in his life, and made many lasting relationships during those times. He was born in Portland, Oregon to Ray and Arlean Ellis and grew up in Ridgefield, Washington. He received the rank of Eagle Scout with the Boy scouts. He graduated with Honors

from WSU. After college, he joined the Peace Corps and spent two years living in a village in rural Nepal. Nepal was a defining chapter for Mike, and the experiences he had there were instrumental in how he defined the remainder of his life. While in Nepal, he hiked around Annapurna and to the base of Mount Everest from his village. He supported his young cook Sita Ram through school in Kathmandu. Upon his return, Mike was the YMCA director for four YMCA’s, including Pullman, Berkeley, Olympia, and finally Tillamook, Oregon. He was married twice. He was married to Kathy, his first wife for thirty years. After their wedding, they lived abroad in Sri Lanka for two years as part of the YMCA International program. Mike and Kathy had three children, Matthew, Luke and Mark. Mike settled down in Tillamook Oregon, raising his family hiking, skiing, camping, and singing songs around the campfire. He was the president of the School Board, lead the worship

service at church, acted in three local musicals, cooked authentic Nepali and Sri Lankan food for friends and family, and attended countless sporting events for his young sons. In the next chapter of Mike’s life, he became a traveling consultant for the YMCA. He met and married Ellie, his second wife. They were married for ten years. They moved to Clackamas, Oregon and raised two children, Nasha and Talitha. In 2013, Mike was in a major bicycling accident where he suffered a spinal cord injury; a condition that would plague him for the rest of his life. Despite the accident, Mike continued to love the outdoors and share that enthusiasm with Ellie and the girls. He continued to sing his campfire songs, rode thousands of miles on a specially adapted trike, and helped raise two kids and three energetic grandchildren. In his final chapter, Mike moved up to Issaquah, Washington, to be near Matt and his young family. It’s there that he met Mahasti Rolax,

who loved and supported him through the end of his life. Mike has touched the hearts of many people. His legacy will be passed down through the children and grandchildren that share his faith, love for the outdoors, sense of adventure, and kindness and generosity towards others. He cooked the best chicken curry, loved to sing and play the concertina around a campfire, rode countless miles on his bike and trike, and had the best lap for reading bedtime stories. He was a pillar in the community, through various rolls with the YMCA, school board, and Kiwanis club. Mike is survived by: his brother David (Mirja) Ellis; children: Matthew (Kelsey) Ellis, Mark Ellis, Luke Ellis (posthumously), Nasha (Jeremy) Clark, Talitha Van Dijken; grandchildren: Troy Van Dijken, Baylee & Zeplynn Clark, and Reid Ellis The Nepalese had two sayings that Mike took to heart; ke garne- what can one do and aphno kusi- your own happiness. Life happens. What can one do? But whatever happens, we are responsible for our own happiness. It’s what we do with this gift of life that counts. Mike’s memorial service will be held at 2 p.m .on Friday, August 12th, at Faith Church, 3924 Issaquah-Pine Lake Road SE, Sammamish, WA 98029. Mike spent the entirety of his adult life working for and supporting the YMCA. The YMCA is a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening communities, families, and youth development. Jeffrey William Foss Aug. 19, 1987 June 28, 2022

J

effrey William Foss, 34, was born on Aug. 19, 1987 in Portland, Or. Jeff, a longtime resident of Tillamook, passed away unexpectedly on June 28, with his family by his side. As a teenager, Jeff was highly active in the local FAA Chapter. Swine and Beef were his primary focus. He won several awards. Jeff graduated Tillamook High School in 2005. Jeff was always had a deep passion for hunting and fishing, he was a true outdoorsman who took great joy in teaching both his children how to hunt and fish but more than just that, he taught them how to respect the outdoors and the animals. If he was wasn’t hunting or fishing he could be found at the softball fields playing a game or at the bowling alley bowling with his friends in men’s league. Jeff proudly welcomed his son Chance on June 18, 2007. Shortly thereafter marring the love of his life, Lauren Foss and the mother to his two beautiful children in June of 2010. On Dec. 4, 2012, their family became complete with the arrival of his little princess, Taylor.

Jeff spent a brief period of time after High School logging. Before starting his business in woodworking where he spent the last 15 years working alongside his father. Jeff’s workmanship and artistic craftsmanship were one of a kind. Jeff has so much passion and drive in life, he took so much pride in his family and his two children, Taylor and Chance. He loved to go camping with friends and family. Jeff would have the biggest smile when watching his son play with his baby girl (booger) teaching her how to draw and passing down the many techniques and tricks he had learned over the years. Jeff is survived by his wife Lauren, Son Chance (15), Daughter Taylor (9), his parents Jerry and Angie Foss, mother-in-law, Vickie Fisher, brother, Trevor, sister, Jaycee, brother-in-law Cody Belgrade, grandparents Bill Larson, Charlotte & Jim Dolan. Niece and Nephews Lakota, Brantley, Odin, Jack and Whitley. And many more extended family members. Jeff is proceeded in death by his beloved grandmother Connie Larson (Grammie). James Patrick Kelly May 26, 1951 - July 31, 2022

orn May 26, 1951 in Tillamook and passed away peacefully at home after a long battle with Parkinson’s diseases on July 31, 2022. James Patrick Kelly, known as Pat by friends,

was born in Tillamook and worked for Tillamook Fire District for over 47 years. He was the Department’s apparatus officer and official trainer, where he encouraged many young men and women to become EMTs and firefighters. Pat retired as a career fireman with TFD but continued as a volunteer lieutenant until 2021. Pat also drove triples for Tillamook Portland Freight, trucking out of Tillamook in his off time. Pat was a true outdoorsman. He loved hunting, fishing, and traveling to New York to work with New York Fire Department

after 9/11. His favorite place was Coffman Cove in Alaska, where he enjoyed halibut fishing and bear hunting with his friends and nephews yearly. Memorial contributions: In lieu of flowers, please donate to Tillamook Fire Volunteer’s Association in Pat’s honor. Pat is survived by his wife Kristi, Daughters Karleigh, Kourtney Wilks (Chad) Grandsons Chance and Hayden Kelly, Brysen Wilks and granddaughters, Truleigh Kelly and Breslynn Kelly-Wilks. Fair time is ‘Food Time’

he Tillamook County Fair is this week and we all know what that means – Fun, Fellowship and FOOD! This phrase was the mantra of Tillamook’s former Mayor, Suzanne Weber, who led the Sacred Heart Parish food booth at the fair for many years. Sadly, the Sacred Heart booth will no longer be part of the fair which means no more fresh salads, grilled cheese sandwiches or homemade berry cobbler. This also means, no more garlic fries. Nooooooo! Just about everyone has their favorite “fair food” they look forward to every year. Whether it is cotton candy, corn dogs or funnel cakes, they key is to enjoy these annual treats without overdoing it. “Fair time is a special time and that means it is okay to indulge,” says Anne Goetze, a registered dietitian with the Oregon Dairy and Nutrition Council. Also a member of the Tillamook County Wellness Advisory Committee, Goetze encourages fairgoers to think about sharing treats like elephant ears or giant cinnamon rolls with family and friends. Other suggestions for ways to enjoy fair food without adding to your waistline or slimming down your wallet include eating a well-balanced meal or snack before you go to the fair. Here are a few suggestions: • Include protein and whole grains with breakfast for lasting energy. Try oatmeal with yogurt and fruit. • Colorful vegetables can be hard to find at the fair, so plan to eat them at other meals that day. Have a salad or vegetables with your lunch before you go or for dinner back at home. • Healthy snacks can be simple and can be packed in a small cooler or lunch bag,

such as: individual cheese slices, apples, oranges, sliced vegetables or baby carrots, nuts and dried fruit like raisins. According to Dusti Linnell, an associate professor of practice with OSU Extension Family & Community Health and Wellness advisory committee member, “The key is to limit high calorie foods to special occasions and consider ways to boost nutrition whenever possible. Great ideas for sweet treats are to add nuts or fruit toppings to ice cream or frozen yogurt or choose desserts with fruit or whole grains like oats in pies and crisps.” When eating at the fair, Linnell suggests making at least one healthy choice for each meal, like adding a side of grilled vegetables to an order of teriyaki noodles. If curly fries are your go-to fair food, consider sharing those with others and combine with a salad or a burger with lettuce, tomato and onion. Local vendors serving healthier or plant-based meal options might be found inside the exhibit hall or near the carnival, so be sure to scope out all your options before settling on your final meal plan. Intentionally combining healthy choices when eating treats helps regulate blood sugar and avoid feeling

sluggish. This is always important but especially during Fair, where you’ll need lots of energy to do all that walking and talking! With that in mind, remember to drink lots of water throughout your day. Consider bringing a water bottle or replacing soda with bottled water when ordering meals. As a final note, the fair can be a crowded, bustling place. People who have not yet been fully vaccinated for covid-19, are at a high risk of getting it. Even if you have been vaccinated, it is still possible for you to transmit the virus to others. Young children and people with certain health conditions are not yet able to be vaccinated. Please consider wearing a mask to protect those vulnerable populations. Frequent handwashing is another important way to avoid spreading illness. Take advantage of hand washing stations located throughout the fair and have hand sanitizer as an added safety precaution. Staying connected socially is as important for our well-being as eating healthy foods. Both contribute to a stronger immune system and improved mood. Even if you don’t plan to go to the fair, consider ways you can gather with friends and family to enjoy some fun,

Kurt was born Sept. 28, 1951, on opening day of deer season when his Daddy Dale dropped his Ma Ma off at the old Tillamook General Hospital and returned several days later after a successful hunting trip to find out he had a bouncing blue eyed baby boy! Needless to say Kurt turned into one hell of a spotter and marksman! Kurt grew up in the Garibaldi area & graduated from NKN high school He worked for a while in the woods , then at Sauce Bro. Ocean towing, Don McVay Roofing and retired from the Port of Tillamook Bay after 22 years. Highlights of his life were when he was working in Dutch Harbor years ago he saved a

toddler from drowning after she fell off the docks & into the cold water. His trips to Medugorje, in Croatia and Lourdes in France had a special place in his heart. Kurt enjoyed his weekly Tuesdays with besties A.D. & Chris playing video poker at the Landing. Kurt loved God, his family and his Country! Kurt hated peas! He is survived by his wife of 41 years Judy, his step-daughters Kristen Rodrigues (louis) Jacque Daniels (Tom) He was Pee Paw to grandchildren Drew, Kade, Brenna, Jack, Alec, Hunter and Keagan. Siblings Shawn Rodgers (Gordon) Kim Machalek, Teno Sours, Tim Sours (Pie) , several nieces and Nephews. A celebration of Life & Mass will be at St Mary’s by the Sea Rockaway Beach on Aug 13 at 11 AM with reception following in the hall. Garibaldi honors US Coast Guard, past and present on their Anniversary Last Thursday, Aug. 4, the first annual “Coast Guard Appreciation Day was a huge success with over 275 people attending the event held at the event tent down at the Port by the Old Mill. The event celebrated the 232nd birthday of the US Coast Guard, it was to honor

local Coast Guard members and past and present Coast Guard. Retired Captain Ole Olsen, who recently passed away, was honored for his service, and his family made a beautiful display showing his activities. The Bubble Ball tournament between the Coast

Guard and Fire department was so entertaining. There were corn-hole games, a water balloon toss, coloring, and a bubble station, followed by a delicious meal prepared by Garibaldi Portside Bistro. Mojo Holler supplied the music for the event.
