Health department gives COVID update Talks universal masking

illamook County Health Department reported during a Tillamook County Board of Commissioners meeting Wednesday, July 28, 30 positive COVID-19 cases from July 11-24. The previous twoweek period had 42 cases. Administrator Marlene Putman reported 13 cases over the past week. “We’ve had nine, what I call, breakthrough cases,” Putman said. “Those are individuals who have been vaccinated and still test positive. Those occurred between midJune to July 28.” There have been 14 cases of the delta variant in region 1, which includes Tillamook, Clatsop, Clackamas, Columbia, Multnomah and Washington counties. While there

is no current data for individual counties regarding the delta variant, Putman said the health department expects it to be in the county. “As 14,688 residents have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, this places us at 66.6 percent vaccination rate of those eligible to receive the vaccine have at least one dose,” Emergency Preparedness Coordinator Ed Colson said. Appointments for vaccines are available Tuesdays and Thursdays at the health center’s 8th Street annex. Vaccines are free. Call 503-8423914 to make an appointment. “The vaccines are also available at your local health care providers,” Colson said. “When you schedule an appointment at your doctor’s office, that’ll give you a great time to bring up any questions or concerns or information you might need regarding

receiving a vaccine.” Local pharmacies throughout the county also have vaccines available. Oregon Health Authority (OHA) released Tuesday, July 27, a recommendation of universal mask use in public indoor settings throughout the state to protect Oregonians from COVID-19. This is in response to an increase in cases and new national guidance calling for masking measures to prevent the spread of the delta variant. According to Dr. Dean Sidelinger, state epidemiologist and state health officer, the delta variant has increased tenfold in the past two weeks in Oregon and is estimated to be associated with 80 percent of the new cases in Oregon. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), people who are vaccinated with currently available vaccines are better protected from the virus and

circulating variants, including the delta variant, OHA reported. “Oregon Health Authority has passed on the application of these rules to local public health authorities to address what the local response might be,” Putman said. “Our health officer Dr. Melissa Pualisen will be back on Monday and we will have further discussions about what the response might be.” Putman said the health department’s recommendation is to adhere to the recommendation and comply with universal masking in indoor public spaces. Putman said getting vaccinated helps prevent illness, hospitalizations and death. Data shows the delta variant is more contagious than other variants of the virus. Some vaccinated people can get a breakthrough case from the delta variant. In areas with high transmis-

sion, CDC recommends everyone wear a mask in indoor spaces. Commissioner Erin Skaar said it is up to each person to make a decision on what OHA is recommending. Vice-Chair David Yamamoto said he thinks the recommendation is a personal responsibility issue. He thinks the state has abdicated responsibility and he does not see how it is helpful to require everyone to wear a mask. Chair Mary Faith Bell said given the recommendation from the health department for universal masking, she is wearing a mask. The ownership is now on counties to develop a response. New police chief brings servant mentality to job P

olice Chief Ray Rau was sworn in as police chief during a Tillamook City Council meeting Monday, June 21. He had been serving as interim chief since April 23, when Police Chief Terry Wright retired. Rau began his career in the Oregon Department of Corrections in the 1990s. He worked for a couple of police departments, including the Sandy Police Department for several years. He also worked for the Department of Public Safety Standards & Training (DPSST) as a sergeant and became captain. He was there for eight years. “I was the academy training supervisor,” Rau said. “I oversaw regional traffic safety, I oversaw all the basic curriculum for all the disciplines, scheduling for all the instructors.” Rau is also a member of the Oregon Association Chiefs of Police. “I’m a member of that, I’m on the board of directors for that,” Rau said. “I’m signed up as a linebacker. It’s an assistance program for agencies that are without a police chief.” Members will often go to police departments for short-term stints as chief and help an agency develop structure, help them recruit an applicant for police chief or find one internally. Rau has done this with the city of Lakeview. City manager Nathan George put a request out to the Chiefs of Police for an interim police chief. Rau came in April to serve as interim chief.

Kitty’s Food and Spirits owners Joel and Dana Baker, known for providing the best music and entertainment in the area, are doubling down in September as they have booked the Jokers and Jester Comedy Tour in town for two nights. Jake Daniels, Tony Dijamco and Steve Mazan with the Jokers and Jester Comedy are taking center stage Friday and Saturday Sept. 3-4 for a full night of gut-busting humor as they each perform their signature acts. After the comedy each night the Joel Baker band will be playing so why not warm up with one of the best acts in the country then dance the night away. Shows start at 6:30 p.m. each night and advance tickets are mandatory as there will be standing room

only for these shows. Daniels, with the tour, said in a phone interview last week, that he’s been to Tillamook once before and is excited to bring some new material to town. “Normally we’re in and out of towns pretty quickly, so it will be nice to stick around and see the area while we’re here,” he said. “We’ll be here for two nights so it will be nice to see your little town.” Last year was rough on traveling acts due the the pandemic, but with restrictions lifted and things looking better, Daniels and his entourage are happy to be back touring and back to work. “Pre COVID we were on the road 10 months out of the year,” Daniels said. “We would do 300 shows per year, so it’s nice to be getting back out doing what we love to do.”

Hall said he spoke to Ron Halter, a partner on the application with Paul Daniels, who reaffirmed he is no longer interested in building the 66 unit apartment complex. Halter would like to begin construction no later than September, Hall added. “I am asking the city council to reconsider the motion that was made to deny the application for the 66 unit apartment complex as a first motion and second motion to accept the offer by Coastal Housing Solutions and Mr. Halter and Mr. Daniels to build an 18 apartment unit plus nine sites for houses,” Hall said. Daniels said the new application proposes 18 onebedroom apartments in the C zone and a subdivision in the R zone. “We don’t know exactly how many lots there will be,” Daniels said. Coastal Housing Solutions withdrew their application for the 66 unit apartments upon approval of the new application. Annual membership drive of AAUW Tillamook set for Sept. 26 Hilary Dorsey Staff Writer

American Association of University Women (AAUW) in Tillamook is hosting their annual membership drive from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 26, at the Port of Tillamook Bay office, located at 4000 Blimp Blvd. The free event has been traditionally called a tea and is a way for people to find out more about AAUW Tillamook and see if it fits their lifestyle and schedule. Food and drinks will be provided and everyone is welcome to attend. Contact membership vice-president Kelly Benson at kbenson@tillamookymca. org for more details. The theme this year is “Celebrating We.” “We started in 1938 in Tillamook,” AAUW Tillamook President Susan Henderson

AAUW Tillamook has three members who have obtained over 50 years each of membership. AAUW hosts political debate forums, STEM summer camps and provides scholarships to local women of all ages in their pursuit of higher education. Pierce joined the AAUW because of its reputation.

“We honor every religion,” Henderson Pierce said. “We’re about equity and fairness.” Henderson Pierce said of the main accomplishments of AAUW Tillamook is scholarships. They have one of the larger endowments for Tillamook Bay Community College. “This year, a student was awarded over $2,500 for her classes at TBCC,” Henderson Pierce said. This TBCC scholar is Marlene Valencia-Godinez.

She is in the nursing program at TBCC and hopes to stay in the community as a nurse. AAUW Tillamook also has a scholarship to go to university or four-year college, Pierce added. Over $5,500 was awarded this year. This was difficult to do because the normal fundraising has been to hold a wine and chocolate event, which was not held this year due to COVID-19. Tillamook AAUW supported three returning students. Students who have received the university scholarship include Kara Putman, Allison Wilkes and Baelie Werner. Henderson Pierce said men and women are highly welcome to join AAUW Tillamook. Members are required to have an associate’s degree or higher. “Nationally, Tillamook AAUW is part of a district,”

Fire districts look to consolidation in some parts of the county For several decades, fire departments around the state have been struggling with staffing and providing adequate services to their patrons. The Bay City Fire Department, Garibaldi Rural Fire District, City of Garibaldi Fire Department, Rockaway Beach Fire Department, Nedonna Beach Fire District and Tillamook Fire District have been working for several years to find a solution for this problem. Recently the Garibaldi Fire Department, Garibaldi Rural Fire District and Bay City Fire Department have decided to proceed towards a district consolidation. Tillamook Fire District and Rockaway Beach Fire Department will continue to support the agencies with interagency training and operational aid agreements. Garibaldi and Bay City will be entering into an intergovernmental agreement for the sharing of Garibaldi’s training chief services for

Bay City Fire Department one day a week to progress towards this goal. The current full time employee staffing between these three agencies combined is two, including two part-time fire chiefs, a full-time division chief and 35 volunteers. The agencies’ financial budgets are being strained by duplication of positions and understaffed stations with an annual call volume climbing beyond feasible capabilities. Staff and volunteers are being challenged both physically and mentally with the increased call volumes, long duration of calls, and increased training requirements. The most feasible solution is a consolidation that would encompass three agencies into one single fire district. The fire chiefs have been meeting monthly to discuss steps, goals and a time frame continuing towards a consolidation

option. Recently, training officers from each district were included to coordinate an interagency training plan that will bring the departments together weekly, increasing interoperability and streamline incident operations. Garibaldi and Bay City have been training together and moving forward with progress for transitional ease. They have also been working together on incident coverage to improve serviceability and interoperability. Tillamook Fire and Rockaway Beach Fire have been key supporters and partners in getting to this point; their continued support moving forward will be vital to overall success. Bay City Fire Department has a citizens committee helping set goals and providing input on solutions for their agency. At this time, Garibaldi Fire Department would like to reach out to the community and ask for

1-2 citizens within the city of Garibaldi or Garibaldi Rural Fire District’s boundaries to join this committee and continue the path to success. It is the goal to consolidate Garibaldi Rural Fire District, City of Garibaldi Fire and Bay City Fire Department into one district by the end of 2022. This committee will be tasked with public education, support and assisting with setting goals to accomplish this time frame. This commitment will require individuals to be proactively involved with their local fire department, community and committee meetings. here is a beautiful new wooden bench at the west end of Pacific Ave., overlooking the ocean. I was told that Toni Quinn commissioned the bench to honor her mother, Shirley, a long-time property owner in our little village. The bench is inscribed “Shirley’s Escape” and a tile with an old Irish blessing is embedded in the concrete foundation. The unattributed blessing reads, “May the road rise to meet you, may the wind be always at your back, may the sun rise warm upon your face, the rain fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again, may God

hold you in the hollow of his hand.” What a lovely gift to simultaneously honor Shirley and give a place for Cape Meares residents and visitors to rest as they gaze upon the endless waves coming ashore on our sandy beach. Congratulations to Sally McGee, Butch Freedman, Lana Ayers, and Ciel Downing for having works accepted into the eighth edition of “North Coast Squid,” a literary arts magazine published once a year by the Hoffman Center for the Arts out of Manzanita. The annual publication, produced each October, features fiction,

nonfiction, prose, poetry, and photography from writers and artists who live on the North Oregon Coast or have a strong connection to it. There will be a gallery showing at the Hoffman Center for

the photography chosen for “The Squid,” and each artist is allowed to include one other piece. Sally, Butch, Lana, and Ciel all had literary pieces accepted, and Ciel had two photos accepted as well. What a surprise to find a big tree down across a lane and a half of Bayocean Road on July 22. It certainly wasn’t there on my way to town, but when I returned home mid-morning, there it was. It

appeared to be part of a dead tree that had simply snapped off, although that wasn’t a particularly windy day. I called home and asked my husband to report it, then I squeezed around it and made my way home. Within a short period of time, the Tillamook Public Works Dept. had removed the obstacle. Thank you once again, road warriors! I was not the only one to be surprised on Bayocean Road recently. July 24 was a foggy, windy day; I wonder if that was partly to blame for a single car accident in which the vehicle actually left Bayocean

Road and landed in Tillamook Bay. An Oregon State Park Ranger was the first person on scene. Dave Audet responded in a rescue vehicle from Cape Meares Fire Station 73, soon followed by fellow Cape Meares volunteer firefighter Jonathon Hedden in his own car. Sheriff deputies, Fire District vehicles from Tillamook, and an ambulance quickly arrived and assisted. The gentleman was rescued from his vehicle and taken to the hospital; we hope he was not seriously injured. Bayocean Road is narrow and curved; please slow down and pay attention, drivers.

this summer. There was a great turn out last Saturday afternoon to celebrate the life of Ginger Harlow Allen, my friend from Book Club. The service was held at Nestucca Valley Presbyterian Church and led by their Pastor, Ben Dake. Ginger planned every detail from the organ playing Amazing Grace as prelude, to the song her fellow choir members sang, including a recitation of the 23rd Psalm, to the time for heartfelt stories at the microphone that ended the service. There was no time for me to share my favorite memory of Ginger. It was a time (of many) that she hosted Book Club. The protagonist of that month’s book sold Pho at a food cart in Vietnam. Ginger cooked us Pho, starting the savory broth days in advance, as is the tradition; it was delicious. She was a wonderful hostess. On the subject of Hebo Women’s Book Club, the group met for July last Tuesday via Zoom. I missed the meeting having trav-

eled to Caltsop County for a medical appointment. The group discussed “The Night Watchman,” Louise Erdrich’ recent Pulitzer Prize winner. It’s based on the true story of the author’s uncle traveling with a group of fellow tribe members to protest the federal government’s plan to remove theirs from bands of Native Americans who are federally recognized. Next month we’ll discuss Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey. Don’t forget that Neskowin Farmer’s Market happens from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. weekly on Saturdays. spotted Cathy Griffin, and her own Peter Byrne, traveling behind me on my way to work in Tillamook this morning. I could see an enormous plastic bag filled with returnable bottles strapped to their luggage rack. More bottles and cans filled the cargo compartment of their rig, visible between their faces in my rear view mirror. Maggie, my Chihuahua mix dog (who is nearly nine years old already), had oral surgery yesterday. This required full anesthesia so that four teeth and a benign growth could be removed and for her remaining teeth to be cleaned. Hats off to everyone at Cloverdale Animal Clinic for delivering a happy pup, even earlier than promised. Her little kisses will be smelling sweeter from here on out. I’m grateful. What it isn’t is a permanent handout for local newspapers. Instead, it’s a well-thought-out approach to help sustain local newsgathering efforts through a series of tax credits that expire in five years. And it not only will provide aid to newspapers, but also to subscribers and local small businesses through tax credits that will benefit them directly. Newspaper subscribers already understand the importance of their local newspaper and that their continued support is critical. Through this legislation, subscribers will receive a tax credit of up to $250 per year. It’s a win-win for subscribers as this tax credit will cover a significant part of their annual newspaper subscription, no matter if it’s print or digital. For local businesses, there’s a direct benefit from the LJSA, as well. When they use the effective print and digital solutions of their local newspaper, they will be eligible for a tax credit up to $5,000 the first year and $2,500 per year for the next four years. Not only will this credit offset some of their advertising investment, it also will help them improve their business by reaching more customers and generating more sales. It keeps money invested locally and helps maintain jobs and support other local initiatives. For local newspapers, the LJSA provides a much-needed bridge to continue the evolu-

e are just at the halfway point of the Tillamook Farmers Market season. If you haven’t been to visit yet, I encourage you to do so! We are almost back to pre-pandemic glory. Last week we brought back the kids activity table and will keep that running for the rest of the season. Kids can come down and participate in fun, hands-on activities like rock painting, seed planting, decorating pumpkins and other fun (albeit messy) projects. While they are there, be sure to stop by the Farmers Market HQ and get Kids Bucks. A big shout out to TLC, a Division of Fibre Federal Credit Union for being our Founding Sponsor and supporting Kids Bucks program. These $2 vouchers can be used to get $2 off things like berries, honey, vegetables or other delicious fruits. Have you ever liked a book so much that you re-read the whole thing? I usually get blank stares from people when I ask that question, but I have to admit, I am a re-reader and I am proud of it. I mean, people re-watch movies they enjoyed in the past. Why not books? Anyway, I just revisited the book Martin Marten by the late Brian Doyle. If you have not read it, I highly recommend you pick up a copy. The book is a comingof-age story about a boy growing up in a cabin on Mt. Hood, paralleling his life with the life of a pine marten, a small animal from the otter/mink family, also growing up on the mountain. Not your typical storyline, but as usual, Doyle’s rollicking style of writing makes it a tale to remember.

At one point in the story, a marriage ceremony of sorts takes place between two people who abhor traditions, and the only person who was allowed to “say a little something” during the service was limited to just a few brief thoughts. The speaker trimmed it down to just seven words, and those words were, “Remember we are here for you.” Upon reading that sentence, I thought, that should be our library’s mission statement! There could be no truer words to sum up our ideals and desires. I believe every employee on our staff is always thinking of what we can do for the public in order to provide better service. We are here for you when you are a child. Our books, storytimes, programs, and classes are all designed to help you to learn to love books and reading. Our librarians know that planting the reading seed in a child’s brain as early as possible is the key to their future happiness and success. We are here for you when

you are a teen. We respect the many differences that make teens so unique as they try to figure out their place in the world. The books, magazines, and events we offer are assembled to help you fine tune the future direction of your life. That is one reason we have dedicated such a prime area in our Tillamook library to host teenagers. We are here for you when you reach adulthood and are trying to fit the pieces of your life together. As you search for jobs, we’re there to help with resumes. When you try to find the best fit for a vocation, we have resources to help with that, too. If children enter the picture, we have your back there as well...with books to read, programs to attend, and a place to learn and grow with your family. We are here for you through each stage of your life, with different resources to help you move in the right direction. Need help on finances, investing, or retirement planning? We have so much information in our libraries that can help you figure it all out. We are here for each and every resident in the county, and we welcome all regardless of race, color, sexual orientation, or political party. Well, not being an ukulele lover, I will introduce her to an ukulele jam with about 25 players, so she will either have to listen or go for a long walk. All kidding aside, she is a photographer, so will probably take a bunch of pictures of the event. I personally think she will enjoy herself. If not, well, there is always that walk I mentioned. Then, we are driving over to the Deschutes County Fair for a day. She says she does like fairs, so that will be a fun

reetings Bay City! News of the pending retirement of Gordon McCraw on August 2nd was sad news for our community, and I mean the entire Tillamook County, as he and his family would be moving to the valley to be near relatives. Gordon has worn many hats, including sheriff lieutenant, weatherman, and

you say about a woman who makes every effort to include everyone, shows everyone kindness, has great empathy, and never judges you in your worst moments. I would say she is the friend we all need. Kin and I will miss Whitney, her sweet smile, her art work, and the way her face lights up when people she loves enter the room. Yes, Bay City, for us it’s a loss to our community, but a new chapter for them. And I guarantee that when Heidi steps off the moving van, in five minutes she will have a new “friends circle” around her. It’s that time of year and soon we’ll be seeing children waiting at the bus stop for their ride to school dressed in new school clothes and wearing new backpacks. For some this will be their first time riding the bus and going to school. Helping them start off the year on the right foot was important to me as a parent. After all, school is a big deal, and starting school is an exciting but scary time filled with a lot of unknowns. According to kidshealth.org or scholastic.com, preparing ahead before the school year starts lessens the anxiety for the child (and it’s my guess, also for the parents). Here is a list of seven suggestions for a happier school experience right from the start: 1. Visit the school or classroom and meet the teacher before the first day. 2. Read books to your child about starting school. They recommended “Pete the Cat: Rock in my School Shoes” (pre K-3), “The Night Before Kindergarten” (pre K-K), “The Caring Me I Want to Be”, and more. I didn’t see any for parents like “Mommy Let Go of my Leg, I want to go in”. 3. Talk to your child about his school friends, teacher, and new activities. 4. Practice, practice, practice learning how to get themselves ready each morning for school: dressed, fed, and out the door. 5. Rehearse self-help: For instance, dressing, undressing, tying their shoes, washing their hands, dialing your phone number, and, for their mother’s sake, keeping their fingers out of their nose. 6. Ask your child what kind of snack and/or lunch they want to bring to school. Engage them in selecting and making the snack. 7. Go shopping for school clothes, shoes, and backpack, and let them select from mom approved choices. They didn’t include taking your children for a dental checkup, their yearly physical, and needed vaccinations. Healthier children do better in

school and spend less time in a doctor’s office. Attention Bay City: Exciting News!! The next several months will be spent gathering community feedback and developing design alternatives for the park. OBITUARIES Barbara Pauline Olson Oct. 2, 1939 - July 13, 2021

arbara was born in Empire Oregon to Rose Ann and Albert Eckles on October 2, 1939 and died peacefully at home on July 13, 2021. Barbara married Richard (Dick) Olson in 1956 in Reedsport Oregon. After Dick graduated college she moved with him and their 2 small children, Rich and Vicki to Nehalem Oregon. Barbara owned and operated Olson’s Nursery and florist shop in Nehalem from the

mid 60’s to the early 80’s. In 1975 Barbara gave birth to their 3rd child Joseph, born with spina bifida. She devoted her life to loving and caring for Joseph. She was a strong advocate for handicap accessibility in Neah-Kah-Nie School District. Barbara enjoyed genealogy research, crafting, gardening, computer and printing applications such as card making and digital photography. Barbara was preceded in death by her husband Richard, and two sisters Donna and Grace. Barbara is survived by her children Rich Olson (Sammie), Nehalem, Vicki Olson, Forest Grove, and Joe Olson, Nehalem, 7 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren, her sister Viola Price, Portland, and one niece and 6 nephews. A memorial service will be held at the United Methodist Church on August 28, at 1 p.m.

Merry Dawn Zavala Nov. 11 1959 - July 13, 2021

erry Dawn (Hughes) Zavala passed away quietly on July 14, 2021, in Portland, OR, after a long battle with diabetes. Born to Roy & Itha Hughes in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho on November 11, 1959, Merry was raised with three older sisters & a younger brother. Went to college in Boise, was a nanny in NJ & ultimately earned a Master’s Degree and owned her own counsel-

ing service for a while in Eugene, OR. Later, loved living in Astoria & other Oregon coast towns. Leading life with a trusting heart, she continued moving forward with an infectious smile & laugh through the numerous medical, physical, financial & emotional challenges. Merry was in/out of hospitals & nursing care the past few years due to fall injuries, kidney failure and the resulting infections from dialysis ports & surgeries. She was preceded in death by both parents as well as two sisters, Iola Thompson & Renee Hughes. She is survived by sister, Noella (George) Roots of Post Falls, ID, and brother, Clint (Gail) Hughes of Meridian, ID. No service is scheduled at this time. Merry & the family requests that instead of flowers, friends send a memory gift to St. Jude’s Hospital.

MEMORIAL SERVICE There will be a Memorial service for Gordon Olson, who died in March. It will be held at the Maritime Memorial in Astoria, Oregon at 11:00 am, on the 21st of August 2021. The Memorial is located on 10 Bay Street, off of Marine Drive, under

eborah Christine Kral (Thompson) was born January 4th, 1953 in Tillamook, Oregon to Gerald and Marguerite Thompson. She passed away July 26th, 2021 at her home in Tillamook surrounded by her family. Deborah grew up in Tillamook and attended Tillamook schools, graduating in 1971. She was married in 1972 and lived in Portland and had three children; Shawn, Michael and Kevin. In 1985

Deborah moved back to Tillamook where she worked for the Mint Snuff Factory. Deborah loved to spend time with her grandkids and enjoyed taking them to the river. She also loved shopping at Goodwill looking for bargains and loved spending time with her friends as well, who she truly adored. She was a member of the Life Change Christian Fellowship Church and a member of Alanon. She enjoyed teaching Sunday School at Life Change too. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family. Deborah is survived by her three children; Shawn Aerni (Alan), Michael Kral (Amy), Kevin Kral (Laura) A Service will be held Wednesday August 4th, 2021 at 1:00PM at the Life Change Christian Fellowship Church. Graveside will follow at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery. Arrangements in care of Waud’s Funeral Home.

eorge Robert Coulter “Bob” was born on November 23, 1932, to John and Gladys Coulter in Milwaukie, Oregon. Bob grew up in Colton, Oregon on a farm with two brothers and two sisters. At seventeen Bob joined the US Army and shortly after graduating high school he fought in the Korean War. Bob worked hard and proudly served his country, because of that Bob was promoted to Staff Sergeant. After leaving the military, Bob went to work at the Oregon State Penitentiary. He then went to work for the South Fork Prison Camp in Tillamook, Oregon. In August of 1957 while working at the South Fork Prison Camp Bob was introduced to a young Nurse, Elizabeth Hunerdosse, by his Sister-in-Law. Bob and Liz hit it off instantly, after a going on a few dates they decided to get married. Three months

after meeting on November 11, 1957, they were married. Bob And Liz started a life together in Tillamook, having three sons, Brent, Jon and Kerry. Bob worked as a Capitan for the Tillamook City Police and later as a Deputy Sheriff for the Tillamook County Sheriff’s office. Outside of work, Bob was very active and had lots of friends. Their house was often the hub of their friends and family. They enjoyed entertaining and visiting with everyone and their home was a place everyone loved to be. Upon retirement Bob and Liz moved to La Pine, Oregon. They enjoyed being close to many families and friends in La Pine. For many years they spent the winters in Yuma Arizona, and had a great deal of fun doing that. In 2015 Bob and Liz moved to Vancouver, Washington to be closer to their children. Their home continued to be the place everyone gathered, and they enjoyed spending lots of time with their family. Bob joins his wife Liz of 61 years in death. As well as his siblings John, Harold and Florence. He is survived by his sister, Pat. As well as his son’s Brent, Jon and Kerry, his six grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

Men’s league golf heating up as summer wanes With only a handful of league weeks left in the regular Men’s Club schedule the standings are tight in both the North and South divisions. Army/Navy are on top of the North Division with 106 total points with Watt Welding on their heels at 103 points. In the South Division, Rosanna’s is on top with 104 points, but suffered their first stumble of the year when they met the freight train team from the North Division BAMF last week and went down 10-8 over the difficult front nine at Alderbrook. Steve Cham secured the 8th point by draining a 30 foot putt on the last hole of play to take the hole and help garner the 8 total points to keep the lead in the South. Kilts River Gang is in second place in the South at 101.5 points. Last week’s low net on the front nice went to Joe Warren who shot 32 and low

Fireproofing the August garden

do enjoy the gardens in August, but for reasons that are different from the rest of the year. By August, the heavy-lifting in the garden is done and there are no more big projects to tackle. New plants are in and doing well, and the plants that needed to be moved were moved in the Spring. I certainly don’t want to be moving anything now when the weather is so hot and dry. That would only guarantee more watering until the plants were established. August instead brings maintenance to the garden: pulling bindweed daily (a chore that never ends) and buttercup from the flower beds about once a week keeps them in check. I occasionally will prune back a stray branch of the escallonia or the Japanese maples, but that is a pleasure for me and not a chore. Watering deeply about every seven days and keeping the hanging baskets and pots watered more frequently is about all that needs done now. I prefer to water by hand rather than drip irrigation because that way I can see what else needs to be done in the garden as well as treating each plant with the amount of water it needs. More for the Japanese maples and ligularia, less for the succulents and sedums. There are a few things we

need to be concerned about in August and one of them is the possibility of fires. Tillamook County is not immune to fire, even as close to the ocean as we are. We are all aware of the infamous Tillamook Burns from 1933 to 1951. In September of 2020, we were reminded of the possibilities of fire when it struck the Idaville area and in Lincoln County as well. We can act now to help keep our gardens fire-resistant, as no garden can be fire-proof. First thing is to prune branches that touch or overhang the house. Keeping branches at least six feet off the ground will also keep flames traveling along the ground from climbing into the trees and onto the house. Also, shrubs should be pruned away from buildings and, even better, to plant them at least five feet away from the house. Low-growing plants can be planted closer if they

are ones that contain a lot of moisture. Keep debris like dried leaves, grass and pine needles raked up and disposed of away from the house, too. Don’t forget to clean your gutters of dried debris, and this goes for flat roofs on carports or porches as well. Try not to use plants with a lot of oils, sap or resin around the house or outbuildings. Scotch broom comes to mind as it is highly flammable. Instead, find plants with a lot of moisture in their leaves. Our OSU Extension Office has a great guide to fire-resistant plants in their publication “Fire Resistant Plants for Home Landscapes.” You can get a downloadable pdf for only $3 by going to https://catalog.extension. oregonstate.edu/pnw590 or stop by the Extension Office at 4506 Third Street in Tillamook. Keep your lawns mowed and your plants healthy by being diligent about watering. Remove any dead branches or leaves that might serve as fuel for a fire. Water restrictions being a possibility anywhere these days, you might want to consider a xeriscaped garden using plants that have low water requirements. Also, avoid mulching next to the house or out-buildings with bark or leaf mulches. Instead,

use gravel, rocks or pebbles in those areas. Be extra careful when using your firepit or charcoal or gas grill. It is very easy for fires to spread rapidly in dry conditions when a wind picks up unexpectedly. Do I have to say this goes for fireworks as well? Tillamook currently has a county-wide burn ban that has been in effect since July 15. This means no burn barrels or open debris pile burning until further notice. Residents that feel they need to burn during this time will need to contact their local fire departments to see if they can qualify for a burn permit. And finally, use common sense! Don’t place your wood pile next to the house even if it means a little extra walk in the rain and cold during winter months. Propane tanks should also be kept a distance away if at all possible. And when you are refilling your gas-powered lawnmower, do so in an area that is not flammable like a paved or gravel driveway. Keep watering hoses nearby and in good condition so you are ready for an emergency. The specter and destruction of the Bootleg Fire is in the back of everyone’s mind and we certainly don’t want a fire of any kind in our neighborhoods. So please be careful out there.

The police department had been previously closed to the public but is now open. “I love this little town,” Rau said. “Chief Wright had been here for years. I never thought this job would be open.” Rau said his goal coming to Tillamook is God-led. His five-year goal is to identify a candidate for police chief, hopefully internally. “I think every once in a while, you should go outside for a police chief,” Rau said. “You bring in different ideas of how things are done, but for the most part, you should develop internal staffing.” Rau hopes to make a difference and help the city manager and council. Rau is semi-retired. He retired in

2017. “I think I can still make a difference,” Rau said. “To me, it’s all about the team. I’m the least important person in the room.” Rau said right now, the biggest issue at the police department is staffing. The department is currently recruiting. Rau is also working on building relationships with the sheriff’s office, Oregon State Police and other department heads. Rau’s faith and his wife are the most important things to him.
