Salo takes Pig-NFord title T

he annual Pig-N-Ford races have been part of the Tillamook County Fair for the past 97 years. This popular event fills the grandstands to capacity each year and this year was no different. The one-of-a-kind race has the drivers snatch up a pig from the starting line, rush to their Model T, crank it up while clutching the oinker, and speed off for a lap. They swap in a fresh pig for the second lap, crank that engine up again and they’re off. It’s a threelap event. Before the race, drivers pick numbered ping-pong balls that determine starting positions and which pigs they’ll have riding shotgun. In the old days anybody could get into the race. In the early 1950s, a 10-franchise racing association was formed. The race was divided into two heats with five cars racing one day and the five another and they began recording finale champions. Kenny McDonald took the first championship win in 1952 in the No. 10 car. An exhibition race was added for fun around a decade ago. Two races were held each day of the fair at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 11, through Saturday, Aug.

14. Winners from each race throughout the fair competed in the Championship Finals Aug. 14, immediately following the two qualifying races. Winners were Ben Salo with first place, Dillon Walker with second place, and Mckenzi Wassmer with third place. Pig-N-Ford sponsors were Bud Elgin Concessions; Greg and Teresa Hubert with Red Robin; Tillamook PUD; TLC, A Division of Fibre Federal Credit Union; Pepsi-Cola of Tillamook; S-C Paving; Tillmook Country Smoker; Tillamook Motor Company; Les Schwab Tires of Tillamook; and Boyd’s Implement Service, LLC. Salo unseats Walker, who took home the top honors in 2019 in his No. 13 Model T. He, like Salo are returning champions with numerous previous wins. See more fair pictures on page 2.

illamook County Public Health was notified the state of Oregon has implemented a statewide mask requirement for people aged 5 years and older, including those who are fully vaccinated in all indoor public settings and those 2 years old and older when using public transit, effective Friday, Aug. 13. There is no end date set for the mask requirement at this time. Oregon recorded the most COVID-19 cases in a single day since the start of pandemic, Tuesday, Aug. 10, with 2,329 cases. Statewide, hospitals are nearing capacity as COVID-19 cases continue to rise. Here in Tillamook County, a surge of new cases has occurred, with 159 new COVID-19 cases in Tillamook County since Aug. 1. More transmissible strains continue to devastate our community.

In indoor public spaces when face coverings were consistently used, minimal transmission had been noted. Tillamook County Public Health strongly encourages and urges the implementation of mandatory face coverings for all (including people who are fully vaccinated) in indoor public settings. Choosing to wear a face covering will protect those who are not yet vaccinated and add additional protection to those who are vaccinated. All three COVID-19 vaccines (Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson) are safe and effective at protecting against severe COVID-19 illness, hospitalization and death from any of the currently identified variants of concern including delta. In Tillamook County,

63.78% of those eligible for the vaccine are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and 52.80% are fully vaccinated in the total Tillamook County community (including those not yet eligible). Oregon Health Authority reports that COVID-19 cases are lower in communities with a total vaccination rate greater than 60%. In addition, Oregon Health Authority notes that nearly all of the new COVID-19 cases have been from the delta variant. The delta variant is three times more transmissible that earlier strains of the virus, both young and older individuals are getting sick and increasing disease spread. We plead with you, if you or members of your household are at least 12 years old and not yet

vaccinated, choose to get vaccinated as soon as possible – our bodies cannot effectively fight a virus that it has not seen, vaccines give us the ability to do that. The Cedar Butte Fire 18 miles east of Tillamook as of Sunday, was 74 acres, but crews have fully lined the fire and are focusing on containment and mop up. All aviation resources have been released from the fire. Smoke may continue to be visible as slash piles continue to burn within the fire perimeter. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Barring any major changes in conditions, this will be the last update for the Cedar Butte Fire. This firefighting effort would not have been possible without the coordination and support from many members of the Tillamook community. Oregon Department of Forestry would like to thank the Tillamook Airport, Tillamook School District #9, Tillamook High School, the Tillamook YMCA, and the local vendors, restaurants, and stores that helped feed over 100 firefighters for the last four days, three meals a day totaling over 1,200 meals. As mop up operations continue, the public should avoid Cedar Butte Road, and should not travel beyond Cedar Butte junction with Muesial Creek Road.

Gordon McCraw retires from Tillamook County Sheriff’s Office Tillamook County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO) said farewell Monday, Aug. 2, to retiring Emergency Manager Gordon McGraw. McCraw joined TCSO in 2006 and initially served as a criminal patrol deputy before taking the helm of emergency management. McCraw’s 25 years of service in public safety began at the Gretna Louisiana Police

Department. Prior to that, he retired after serving 20 years in the U.S. Navy. McCraw was given a plaque recognizing his years of service, and TCSO Chaplain Dan Mason presented Gordon with an American flag that had flown over the U.S. Capitol and the Tillamook County Sheriff’s Office on behalf of all of the TCSO chaplains.

“Gordon has proudly served Tillamook County for 15 years and we wish him well on this new chapter in his life,” said Sheriff Joshua Brown. McCraw was rehired by the Tillamook County Board of Commissioners to assist in the transition to a yet to be determined emergency manager.

Craig was a widower with three children; the blended family of seven now boasts kids ages 12, 13, 15, 16, and 18. This means we net three more grandchildren; hooray! We are now up to 14; the more the merrier around

here. We wish the happy couple and big family many joyful, albeit busy, years to come. Jack and Sue Drafahl do just about everything together. They dive in the Solomon Islands; take stunning underwater, landscape and wildlife pictures; write and publish fiction and non-fiction books…and now have had surgeries just a week apart. Come on, guys, this is taking those “be as one” vows too far! Jack had back surgery and Sue had knee surgery. All of us here in Cape Meares wish you a full and speedy recovery, Jack and Sue.

absolutely love all the fruit stands in our travels this summer. A high point is always when the peaches and nectarines are in season. Yum! So, recently we bought lots of fresh greens and radish sprouts. Oh my gosh! They were absolutely delicious. I have made my own alfalfa sprouts for years, but the radish sprouts had a pleasant kick to them. You may pay a bit more at these stands, sometimes not, but they are so much more flavorful than what you buy at the store. This weekend, August 21st, Ann Swain’s Celebration of Life is at St. Mary’s by the Sea parish hall. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR We are the actual experiment Much of our mainstream, Orwellian media would have us believe that the more than 4,000 reported serious injuries that have resulted from receiving the COVID jab is comparatively low, considering the millions that have been vaccinated. But a study conducted by Harvard

University found that less than 1% of people with serious side-effects report it to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS). If Harvard’s study is correct, and the Department of Health and Human Services agrees, then the number of serious injuries from the COVID injections would be at least 400,000, including cases like the young mother of three from Nashville, who was paralyzed after

receiving the vaccine. Her doctors don’t know if she’ll ever walk again. All this for an under-tested—we are the actual experiment—and an unproven vaccine with no data of success in preventing COVID. That’s a lot of risk for something with a recovery rate of 99.96%. Alan Kern Garibaldi

hat kind of a person goes to the beach and then thinks about the library? A librarian, of course! This morning I walked at Oceanside Beach and was suddenly struck with the correlation between birds I saw on the beach and the personalities and traits of our library patrons. But first, a disclaimer. If you see yourself in any of these observations, know that this is all for fun and we love you all. When I see the acrobatic pelicans dive-bombing the ocean for food, I think about the people who come to the library with one goal, and one goal only. They run in, grab what they want, and run back out. Contrast that with the unhurried and careful Blue Heron. It moves about slowly, looking left, then right, then left again, carefully scoping out what is in front while keeping a cautious eye on its surroundings... just in case it misses something. This reminds me of the people who browse carefully through the library, looking hard for just the right thing to take home. If they don’t find what they want in one area, they fly on over to another shelf range so they can hunt

for what they are looking for in peace. Next come the sandpipers that fly this way, then that way, and then back this way again...flit, flit, flit! They appear content for a moment, then some unseen signal sends the group zooming off together somewhere else. Always in a hurry, and always full of excitement to be on the beach. These, of course, are the children who come into the library. I especially see the similarities when a group of kids come in. First they are playing by the puppet stage, then suddenly, the whole group is off to the board books, then they quickly move to the computers. The opposite of this is the bald eagle. The eagles I see along the coast like to pick out a spot high in a tree where no one can bother them...and then they just chill. Eagles are most similar to our library patrons who love to grab four or five

books that interest them, find a cozy chair on the periphery, and just relax while having a good read. If someone gets too noisy or close, they “fly away” to another chair where they can find the peace and solitude they are after. But what about the noisy ravens and seagulls? On the beach, they are only interested in one very popular thing...food! They swoop and peck and lash out at each other in order to be the one who gets the meal first. This reminds me of the people who are always after the best and newest books and movies...and that is PRECISELY why we have implemented the “hold” system at the library where you can get put on a prioritized list for high-demand items. If we didn’t have that, it would be a noisy, pecking, free-for-all in the library in regards to who gets the new stuff first! We would all be like the pack of seagulls fighting over the same crab. There’s one more “bird” on the beach that we never see in the library. They are the cormorants who fly right by without ever stopping. Where are they going in such a hurry? Regardless, we hope to see those cormorants and the rest of you “birds” in the library very soon.

eptember 2, 1945, the war is over. What is next for the hangars? What was built to be temporary is now 79 years old. Hangar ‘B’s 80th birthday will be October 27, 2021. The FRIENDS Board are planning a huge Birthday party for Hangar ‘B’ in October, not sure of the exact date yet. You are all invited. Come see The Titan of Tillamook and the Museum full of history. For the next few years, the hangars were used primarily as a storage depot for surplus military aircraft. Navy blimps that were stored here were purchased by Goodyear, Douglas-Leigh Sky Advertising and other companies and reinflated at Tillamook. Many fixed-wing aircraft were stored in the two enormous Tillamook hangars waiting for delivery elsewhere. The

mission of the military at Tillamook had come to a close and the Navy decided to disband the Station. Sometime during the war years, CAA (don’t’ know what or who that is) made an offer to help create an airport. The Navy handed their Station over to Tillamook County. A fifteen year lease was arranged and a Commission was appointed to operate the airport and maintain the station facilities. From 1952 and 1953 the United States Air Force launched instrument-carry helium filled balloons capable of high altitudes from the Tillamook Base in order to track the jet stream, known as the “Moby Dick Project.” They launched the balloons from the mooring circles on the Northwest side of the base from a semi-truck with a breakaway top. It was Designed by USAF Col. Parry, the truck was known as the “Parry Schooner.” The Air Force also used the Base as a training facility in 1955/56. Entrepreneurs put them to work with creative Projects. Several aerospace type companies did not given up on the idea of the blimp and balloon type models as successful inventions after the war. I’ll mention a few. Do you remember the hot air balloonist, Ed Yost and Don Piccard? They crossed the English Channel with a hot air balloon in 1963. They came to Tillamook to attempt to launch a “Roziere” type of balloon which used two separate chambers of helium and hot air. Their goal was to fly coast- to- coast nonstop. Unfortunately, the balloon ripped during efforts to correct a problem with the helium portion and the attempt was abandoned. In July of 1979. Tillamook was once again the spot for another coast- to- coast attempt when the Davici Trans-America Helium Balloon was brought into Hangar ‘B’. Our exciting and unpredictable weather presented this project with prevailing Easterly winds early in the morning of September 26th. Success seemed assured until they were caught in a thunderstorm and started to ice up. At 12:56am on

October 2nd, they made an emergency landing in Spencerville, Ohio, a mere 500 miles short of their goal. In 1990, the “Earthwind” project tested a prototype balloon in preparation for a around the world attempt. The balloon was launched on the evening of September 8th and landed in Omak, Washington two days later. In 1984, Wren Aircraft leased part of Hangar ‘A’ in an effort, to set up a shop to modify the Cessna 182 Skylane to give STOL {Short Take Off and Landing} characteristics. The STOL project did not last long. Do you remember Aerolift, Inc. also called the “Cyclocrane.” It was a blimp body with four fixed wings and a tail. It was built for lifting. Once again strong winds tore the cyclocrane from the mooring mast and destroyed it. Back to the drafting table and development, it was tested and failed on November 7, 1989. Grace Aircraft later named U.S. Airship Corportion, developed a blimp for advertising , known as “Skytalk”, later named “Spirit of Oregon”. We the people of Tillamook County, got to work and made things happen domestically. I’ll tell you about those projects and businesses next month. alanchoe (KAL-unKOH-ee) is the succulent I have chosen for August. Find one of these lovely, easyto-grow plants and you will be charmed forever. From the family Crassulaceae, there are over 125 species in this genus, although not all of them are regularly seen in cultivation. Originally from Madagascar and tropical Africa, a kalanchoe was one of the first plants to be sent into space to the Soviet Salyut 1 space station in 1979. So you might say it is a plant that is “out of this world.” A regular indoor bloomer, kalanchoes can be found in nurseries, florists and even grocery stores at certain times

of the year. This is a typical succulent in that it will need bright light and well-drained soil to thrive and bloom. It blooms prolifically in the spring with flowers that will last several weeks. If you are diligent about deadheading and give it minimal watering, it may even

bloom multiple times in a year. The flowers come in many colors – pinks, yellows, reds, whites, oranges and two-toned - and form little clusters above the leaves that remind me of tiny bouquets. While they like bright light, they do not like direct sun and the leaves will easily scorch and burn if left in the sun too long. An east-facing window is best. Water these plants like most succulents: only when the soil is completely dry about a couple of inches into the pot. A good saturation every ten days or so works best, until winter when you can cut back even more on the watering. Make sure the pot has good drainage

so the roots don’t sit in water. Water so that the excess comes out of the bottom of the pot and remove any standing water from the drainage catch-basin after 20 minutes. This will help prevent root rot. Speaking of pots and planting, use 50% of cactus soil with 50% potting soil. Kalanchoes like a little heavier soil than a lot of succulents, thus the 50/50 mix. As with all succulents, allow the nursery pot to dry out completely before repotting. You can knock off some of the loose soil but try to disturb the delicate roots as little as possible when you remove the plant from its nursery pot. This keeps the plant from going into

Wait a day or two before watering the newly-planted kalanchoe. Kalanchoe are pretty easy when it comes to preferred temperatures. You can even grow it outside during the warmer summer months, although bring it back inside before the night temps drop below 55F. Actually, almost any temps from 55 to 80F will work and humidity is not an issue as they don’t need high moisture levels to thrive. I do recommend a balanced fertilizer once a month during the blooming times of spring and summer. One with a little higher potassium (the “P” in N-P-K) will help the kalanchoe produce buds for its next bloom. While the K. blossfeldiana is perhaps the most common and easiest to grow, I have been charmed by the K. luciae or paddle plant. These have wide and round leaves that fan out almost like clam shells and can turn pink on the edges in cooler temps (40F). This is a slow-growing type of kalan-

choe whose leaves can reach 6” across in time. A monocarpic plant, it will bloom only once after several years with a 3-foot-tall stem with yellow tubular flowers. The flowering rosette will then die, but it leaves behind offsets that can be replanted or left to grow in clusters. The paddle plant likes a gritty cactus soil and can take a bit more water in hot summers. In the winter, bring it indoors to a bright window (not direct sun). Kalanchoe luciae was given the Award of Garden Merit in 2012 from the Royal Horticultural Society. So it has real creds. I must warn, though, that most of the kalanchoe are very toxic to humans and animals. So if you have young children or pets that like to nibble on your plants, maybe this succulent isn’t for you. An alternative is to keep it high enough that cats, dogs and/or children can’t get to it. It would be a shame not to have such a pretty succulent in your collection. Space travel and a RHS award. Doesn’t get much better than that!

Gov. Brown announces deployment of Oregon National Guard to support front line hospital Workers Governor Kate Brown today announced she will be deploying up to 1,500 Oregon National Guard members to support frontline health care workers as Oregon hospitals face a surge of hospitalizations due to the rapid spread of the Delta variant. Beginning August 20, an initial 500 Guard members will be deployed to hospitals around the state to provide logistical support as materials handlers and equipment runners, as well as assisting with COVID-19 testing and other necessary services to support hospital operations. The Oregon National Guard is prepared to provide logistical support for more than 20 hospitals across the state. “This morning I received the grim news that there are 733 Oregonians hospitalized with severe cases of COVID-19, including 185 in intensive care units,” said Governor Kate Brown. “I cannot emphasize enough the seriousness of this crisis for all Oregonians, especially those needing emergency and intensive care. When our hospitals are full with COVID-19

patients, there may not be room for someone needing care after a car crash, a heart attack, or other emergency situation.” “I know this is not the summer many of us envisioned, with over 2.5 million Oregonians vaccinated against COVID-19. The harsh, and frustrating reality is that the Delta variant has changed everything. Delta is highly contagious, and we must take action now. “We will get through this the same way we have before: together. So please, if you have been waiting to get vaccinated, go do it today. Vaccines are safe, effective, and widely available. And, when you go out in public today, wear a mask. Masks are a simple and effective way for all of us to help slow the spread of COVID-19.” While the Oregon National Guard also has members with health care, nursing, and medical training, many of those members are already hard at work for their civilian employers––Oregon hospitals and health care providers.

OBITUARIES Elizabeth Jeanette Rawe Sept. 30, 1925 - Aug. 4, 2021

eanette was born in Tillamook on Sept. 30, 1925, to Walter and Elizabeth (Balmer) Wismer and passed away on Aug. 4, 2021, in Tillamook. All six of her children were present at the time of her passing. Jeanette married her childhood sweetheart, Francis “Gene” Rawe, in June of 1945. Gene had recently returned from World War II where he had lost his left arm and his sight when injured by a hand grenade. Having promised to wait for Gene, she married him upon his return and faithfully assisted him in establishing their farm on Bewley Creek Road and lovingly rearing their six children. Jeanette was passionate about caring for her family, along with her ministry of entertaining visiting pastors and evangelists. She generously cooked and baked for friends and family – her specialty being the baking of bread, cinnamon rolls and donuts. Jeanette won many First-Place awards at the Tillamook County and Oregon State Fairs. Jeanette was also passionate about music. When Gene’s pension was not able to cover

the cost of music lessons, Jeanette began ironing clothes and doing odd jobs for the music teachers. She was an excellent seamstress and clothed her family in beautiful handmade garments, producing wonderful costumes for the THS drama department. Her grandchildren have fond memories of “Grandmommie” teaching them to drive a stick shift; floating in the middle of the Columbia River while being afraid of the water and unable to swim, sleeping on a trampoline just to be with them, riding on the back of a 4-wheeler – always being such a good sport. She lovingly drove many miles to witness special events and to cheer them on! She was dedicated to living a life pleasing to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and loving others. She was faithful to her Lord, her church, and her family. Jeanette was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Gene Rawe in 2004, her second husband Jack Steinberg in 2014, and brothers Robert and Wesley Wismer. Jeanette is survived by her sister, Joyce Deane of Coquille OR; her children Janet (Gary) Parks of Riverside CA; Larry (Susie) Rawe of Hermiston OR; Duane (Lynette) Rawe of Tillamook OR; Nancy (Mel) Skeen of Farmington MO; Lynda (Dale) Watt of Nampa ID; and Sally Cranston of Vancouver WA; 17 grandchildren; 32 greatgrandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren. Jeanette was laid to rest alongside “Gene” at the Willamette National Cemetery in Portland on Mon., Aug. 6 at 11 a.m. Viewing was all day August 13, 2021 at Waud’s Funeral Home.

aniel Lee Carver, 78, resident of Bakeoven, died at home, on his Bakeoven ranch, Friday, July 23rd. He was born December 14, 1942, in Toledo, Washington, to Max and Helen (Extine) Carver. Max returned home from World War II, the Carvers moved t o Sweet Home where Dan’s brother, Doug was born in 1947, moved again in 1949 to Tillamook County, where Dan’s sister, Carol was born i n 1950. The Carvers lived on a f arm, up t he Nestucca River, between the towns of Beaver and Blaine. Following his 1961 graduation from Nestucca High School (Cloverdale), he attended Oregon State University graduating in 1965 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration. After attending University of the Americas in Mexico City for 1 ½ years and working for Morrison-Knudsen International in Vietnam f or 2 years, Dan started Santiam Mobile Homes in Stayton, Oregon, operating the mobile home company for or more than 30 years. Finally, fulfilling his lifelong dream of ranching in t he Oregon desert, purchased & relocated to the Imperial Stock Ranch near Maupin in 1988. Dan loved business and working hard. One of his favorite places was

his office, where he crunched many numbers. He was always ready to listento a new business idea and continued investing in new business ventures and projects until his death. Dan always enjoyed the outdoors. He fished and hunted, gardened, backpacked to many remote l ocations in the Idaho wilderness, camped near Steens Mountain and Alvord Desert, worked outside as a logger, rancher and environmentalist. Many family and friends enjoyed adventures and everyday life with Dan, including exclusive hunting t rips, “Carver Family Campouts” and conservation ranch tours. Dan had a t ravel bug all of his life, taking his family to many destinations around the world. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Jeanne Zumwalt (Maupin); daughter Susan Rebecca & Rob Miles (Maupin), son Blaine Douglas & Keelia Carver (Maupin) and son Benjamin Lewis Carver (Portland); his brother, Douglas Eugene & Joyce Carver (Grangeville, ID); his sister Carol Ann & Herb Kanne (Portland); grandchildren Holly Kay Miles, Jack Ryan Miles, Eliot Myrsky Carver and Leopold Fenn Carver and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death are his parents ; brother, David; wife of 18 years, Cindy Nelson; and grandson, Maxwell James. Richard L. Blum Aug. 16, 1935 - July 31, 2021

ichard L. Blum was born August 16th, 1935 to Lester and Virginia Blum (Sutton) in Marshfield, Wisconsin and passed away July 31st, 2021 in Oregon. Richard grew up in the Marshfield area and after graduating high school entered the Air Force. After serving his country he worked for Family Publications as well as making and selling barnwood furniture and frames. He later owned the Northwoods Shopper in Solon Springs, Wisconsin and then led a vagabond sales life with his wife Carol for a short period of time. Eventually they moved to Tillamook where they owned and operated the Tillamook Shopping Guide where his daughter Vicki and Carol’s daughter Kelly worked with them.

Richard enjoyed fishing and hunting as well as riding four-wheelers. Richard is survived by his wife Carol, three daughters; Victoria Mothes (Lee), Karen Schleis (Jay) and Ann Kox (Brian), one son Michael Blum (Judy). Two sisters; LaFae Blum, Marilyn Surprise (Louis) and one brother James Blum. Grandchildren; Kathrine Mothes, Alison (Rodney) Zimmerman, Madeleine Mothes, Jena (Jon) Lowczys, Daniel Schleis, Garret Schleis, Sam (Anna) Vembu, Julian Dylan, Mackinnley Kox, and great grandchildren Junah, Virginia, Malina and Davy. Richard is preceded in death by his parents Virginia and Lester Blum, brothers Clifford and Robert Blum and one daughter Sharon Blum.

ichard Peter Kofoed, son of Allan Peter Kofoed and Mary Winningham Kofoed, died August 7, 2021 at 10:10 p.m. in his home on Whiskey Creek Road. He was born March 20, 1946, graduated from Tillamook County High School in 1964, served in the U.S. Army for 3 years and graduated from Memphis State University in 1970. He was a member of Ocean Breeze Baptist Church, Netarts Community Club, Friends of Netarts Bay, and supported the Netarts Fire Department, Netarts Water District, the Whiskey Creek Fish Hatchery, and other civic organizations. He retired from the Tillamook Cheese Factory. Previous employments include the Commercial Appeal newspaper in Memphis, Tennessee and the Air National Guard in Portland, Oregon. Richard was keenly interested in Whiskey Creek, the area of his birth. He treasured the many people he met on life’s journey. Richard was a seemingly serious person in all that he encountered. His well-ordered life included multiple files detailing interests and areas of study including religion, cooking,

sewing, gardening, fishing, kayaking, square dancing, photography, literature, and instructions on almost any topic. In newspaper employment, he had a responsibility for the obituary column and he related the dedication to this important work. It is a personal enrichment to reflect on the life of my brother and to view the books he read and the notes of their content and relevance to him. I regret that he did not write his own obituary, but in a sense he did. His ideals were of work and commitment to the values of God, country and humanity. There was interest in protection of earthly life with a strong belief in the Heavenly life to follow. He was generous with his resources and abilities. Richard is loved by his family. He not only lived in a beautiful place, but among truly beautiful people. His family are most grateful for the acts of love and caring given to him in sickness and health and to us as well. We remain most thankful. God lives and reigns forever! May God bless you. He is survived by his sister Margaret K. Tillamook City Engineer Liane Welch left her position Aug. 10 to become city manager of Bay City. Welch has served in government for many years and had served as city engineer for 3.5 years. Welch has worked in engineering for over 30 years. She worked for the Portland Office of Transportation before coming to Tillamook in 2006. She was public works director for the Tillamook County Road Department for 10.5 years before becoming city engineer. “In that position, I experienced seven federally declared flood events including landslides, culvert failures, bridge failures, and repairing the transportation system,” Welch said of her position as public works director. Welch has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering. She is a professional engineer in the state of Oregon. Welch is married to Carl Welch. The couple has lived

Liane Welch in Bay City since 2007. They have kids and grandkids. Welch was instrumental in the Sewer Rehabilitation Project that was recently completed. Another project Welch worked on was construction on Main and Stillwell. The turn radius at the intersection of Third and Stillwell by the Tillamook County Library has been improved. During the windstorm of Labor Day 2020, there was damage at the intake structure. Welch led the permitting for emergency repairs.

An ongoing project is relocating the water transmission lines from under the Port of Tillamook runways. The city received $12 million through the state legislature for the project. The lines are leaking and if there was an earthquake, the pipes may fail, Welch said. “That is an ongoing project which is a huge benefit for the entire Tillamook city and surrounding areas to have reliable water lines,” Welch said. Welch has served on Bay City’s emergency management committee, is on the budget committee and city council. Welch is also the president of Tillamook Estuaries Partnership and is a volunteer in the community.

Bay City recently received grant funding by Oregon Parks and Recreation Department to develop a park master plan for Al Griffin Memorial Park. The city is also involved in the district consolidation of Bay City Fire Department, Garibaldi Fire Department and Garibaldi Rural Fire Protection District. The city also has plans for infrastructure improvements from funds received from the American Rescue Plan. Welch begins her new position as city manager Monday, Aug. 16. Her last day working for the City of Tillamook was Tuesday, Aug. 10. She said she is leaving on good terms and is looking forward to trying something different. Wildfire conditions worsen amid high temperatures, drought Hilary Dorsey Staff Writer Fire officials discussed Oregon’s ongoing wildfire season, fire prevention and preparedness in a briefing Thursday, Aug. 12. Leaders expressed concern of fire danger in relation to the high temperatures and drought conditions throughout the state. Nancy Hirsch, state forester for ODF, said fire conditions continue to worsen from drought and high temperatures. Five major complexes resulted in last week’s lightning, with a total of 100 fires. One single spark can start a fire that can spread quickly. Firefighters are challenged to continue with the pace of this fire

season. “We can’t control the weather or fire starts from lightning,” Hirsch said, “We can and we must prevent how many human-caused fires we add to the landscape.” ODF’s Chief of Fire Protection Doug Grafe said this is a difficult fire season with a tough forecast of triple digit temperatures across much of the state this week. “We have, along with the challenging temperatures, likelihood of lightning,” Grafe said. “That’s a difficult forecast for us with lower humidity on top of the ongoing drought.” Lightning has contributed to many fire starts, including the Skyline Ridge Complex near Canyonville and the

Middle Fork Complex near Oakridge. Oregon Fire Marshal Mariana Ruiz-Temple said there is a large amount of fire across all lands. The next 72 hours will be critical. “We as the general public are probably the number one helper in this,” Ruiz-Temple said. “We have a role.” Andrew Phelps, director of the Oregon Office of Emergency Management, said every Oregonian was in some way impacted by last year’s fire season, whether they were evacuated or experienced poor air quality from smoke. “We need to use these experiences of our past emergencies and disasters to inform and strengthen our statewide preparedness,”

Phelps said. “Too many of us in Oregon are underprepared. We need to work together to change that.” People must do their part to limit the risk of hazards. People should have copies of critical documents and sign up for emergency alerts in the county at oralert.gov For evacuation levels, level one means get ready, level two is get set, and level three is go, Phelps added. People might get a knock on the door from the fire department, receive a message or may receive no notification at all. People should take time to prepare now. Adventist Health Tillamook responds to COVID-19 surge in Tillamook County

We enter the fifth wave of COVID-19 resurgence in the State of Oregon not seen since February of this year and Tillamook county case reporting data shows a correlating escalation of COVID-19 cases as well. Adventist Health Tillamook is responding to a surge in patients at the Medical Center and the Adventist Health Medical Office – Plaza by providing volume staffing to accommodate this increase, and the executive team is meeting twice daily, seven days a week, to make necessary staffing or process adjustments.

At the time of this release, the hospital is not at capacity and elective surgery will continue under existing safety precautions. To maintain hospital and clinic capacity for patients in urgent need, it is essential for those who have COVID and are not yet showing symptoms or are only mildly ill should quarantine in their homes. Only those with severe symptoms such as difficulty breathing, becoming confused or especially hard to wake, persistent chest pain/ pressure, or developing bluish lips/face should seek care at the Emergency Department.

Due to this surge Adventist Health Tillamook is instituting a no visitor policy, with exceptions. This applies to our hospital, campus medical facilities, and all health clinics including Manzanita, Pacific City, Lincoln City, Sheridan, Vernonia, Estacada, and Hoodland. Hospital visitors will only be accepted in instances of near-terminal demise, the extremely young, and for labor and delivery. Visitor restrictions also allow for memory or physical assistance. All efforts will be made to keep families up to date and in communication

with care providers and their loved ones. We believe the evidence of getting a vaccine to be clear. Even immunized people have been shown to transmit the disease before becoming symptomatic, underscoring that mask use important for everyone. All of the COVID-19 vaccines are safe, effective, and are highly recommended. Crews respond to second alarm fire on Doughty Road

An automatic second alarm fire was dispatched at 5:36 p.m. July 25 on Doughty Road in Bay City. Units were dispatched from Bay City, Tillamook, Netarts and Garibaldi. According to Tillamook Fire District, first in fire crews reported fire involvement with a house that appeared to be under construction and portable buildings in the rear. Fire crews extinguished the

fire in all three buildings with tender shuttles from local hydrants. The property was being used to grow marijuana in two semi-truck trailers outfitted with grow lamps and irrigation, the fire district said. The fire appears to have started in the west side trailer, spreading to the adjacent trailer and then into the house. The homeowner was unavailable for additional comment.

Refrigerator Pickled Cucumbers Prep Time: 20 minutes Ingredients - 2/3 cup vinegar (any type) - 1/3 cup water - 1 teaspoon salt - 2 to 4 teaspoons sugar - 1 to 2 Tablespoons seasonings (see Notes) - 1 1/2 cups cucumber slices Directions 1. In a small saucepan, heat the vinegar, water, salt and sugar until the mixture simmers. Stir until the salt and sugar are dissolved and remove from heat. 2. Place the seasonings

‘Images of Hope’ art contest for local youth, community art days “Images of Hope” is an art contest open to the children of Lincoln and Tillamook County where the Oregon Coast Children’s Theatre (OCCT) and its youth art programs have their principal operations. The contest is open to youth K-12th grade and artwork can be in any medium, crayon, paint, pen and ink basic sketches of full color paintings will be accepted until Oct. 10. The first 100 entries will be put into a drawing for gift cards, free art supplies, a few pizza parties and much more. The contest is looking for images of “hope” through the eyes of a child. National Marine Fisheries Service Biological Opinion Policies How They Could Effect Property Owners in Our Area Monday, August 23, 2-4 p.m., NCRD Auditorium in Nehalem The Port of Nehalem will host Tillamook County Commissioner David Yamamoto and Tillamook County Department of Community Development Director, Sarah Absher as they share critical information on the pending National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) Biological Opinion (BiOp) Policies. The NMFS BiOp will impact many Tillamook County residents, farmers, businesses, and public entities. As currently written, the BiOp directs the FEMA National Floodplain Insurance Program (NFIP) to impose severe restrictions and bans on future development, redevelopment or repair in floodplains statewide to protect fish habitat (salmon and steelhead). In Tillamook County, communities like Nehalem, Tillamook, Pacific City, and more exist within these highly restricted areas and would be severely impacted. The goal of this meeting is to expand community awareness about the BiOp, look at specific examples of the BiOp’s critical impacts to the region, and what our residents, businesses, and public entities’ next steps might be.
