our Tillamook Police Department and the Department of Public Safety Standards Training (DPSST) have teamed up to bring Active Shooter Training to the Tillamook High School from 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Thurs. - Fri. July 28 - 29. This course is designed enhance the collaboration and teamwork between your First Responders (Law Enforcement, Fire & EMS) as they implement proactive survival strategies and response to violent intruder or active shooter incidents. It is also designed to show potential gaps in how they respond and handle these types of situations to make sure that they will minimize the loss of life or injury in the event something like this does ever happen. The overall goal of the type of training is to provide First Responders with real survival-enhancing options for saving lives in those critical moments when a violent situation begins until the threat(s) is stopped. Moments that have no room for mistakes or hesitation in responders efforts to protect human life at all costs. During this training simunition rounds will be used along with alarms, other distracting noises, and role players. If you are in the area, you will see First Responder vehicles in the parking lot, don’t be alarmed, all is okay, we are just training. Your Tillamook Police Department is working closely with all First Responders in Tillamook County, including the hospital, to ensure we have a swift response to any violent intruder attack and its inevitable aftermath. Below are a few points your Tillamook Police Department wants you to know about our response to this type of tragic situation. 1. We train for these types of events. Do we like the thought of ever having to use this type of training? Absolutely not, but this is the type of training necessary in case we ever must use it. It is incomprehensible to all of us that someone would want to harm our children, our loved ones. That’s why we must be ready, anticipate the next move and why we must have an effective plan for our response to save them. 2. We promise you that the officers serving in your Tillamook Police Department will not ever wait to assemble a team to go in during any violent intruder event. Every one of us carries the tools necessary to do whatever we need to do to find and stop the threat(s) and are constantly conducting realistic and high-speed training that has allowed us to develop the mindset to

‘Art of the Mask’ is a new workshop designed for students 6-18 years of age T
he 1st workshops will be held August 15th, Monday from 1-4 p.m.at the Fairview Grange in Tillamook, Oregon on 3rd street down from the County Fairgrounds on the corner of 3rd & Olson Road. 2nd workshop will be on August 29th same time also on a Monday. The Workshop teaches assembly arts, theatre design, and fine arts. Workshops are by the Oregon Coast Children’s Theatre & Youth Art Center. Series of workshops leading up to a Mask Exhibit & Contest for Oregon Coast Youth. OVID-19 may be a distant memory to many, but in Oregon it remains a danger. According to the Oregon Health Authority, 21 counties in the state are in the hightransmission level as the Omicron subvariant BA5 becomes the dominant variant in the state. Dr. Dean Sidelinger, the state epidemiologist, hosted a press briefing Wednesday. He said case counts have leveled to around 1,400 confirmed cases a day, while test positivity rates have climbed to 13.9%. “We know our reported cases are not capturing the full picture because many people are taking at-home tests and not reporting the results and many others are not testing,” Sidelinger said. “Data in Oregon and the Pacific Northwest region indicates there are high levels of transmissions. On July 19, the CDC indicated 21 counties in Oregon are at the CDC high transmission level, indicating high levels of COVID-19 and increased stress on hospitals.” Sidelinger said the Omicron subvariants BA4 and BA5 account for almost all the transmission in the state, with BA5 becoming the dominant strain While testing is not accurately tracking COVID due to a lack of reporting, Sidelinger said OHA is continuing to work with OHSU to do wastewater sampling across the state to get a better picture of COVID in Oregon. “OHA monitors the spread of the virus from samplings collected through the sewage systems,” Sidelinger said. “Wastewater monitoring shows high levels of COVID-19 in our communities statewide.” Another area of concern is increased hospitalizations, Sidelinger said, although cases are nowhere near during the peak of Delta of Omicron. “The number of hospitalized patients with COVID-19 has risen,” Sidelinger said. “Hospitals are stressed across the state due to patients with COVID-19 and other diseases. Since our June 17 update, hospitalizations for COVID 19 have gradually risen for 309 patients reported June 17 to 419 reported today.” During the peak of Delta and Omicron, more than 1,200 patients a day were in the hospital due to COVID. “While we’re projecting there is enough hospital beds available across the state, collective efforts taken by all of us will continue to blunt the spread of COVID-19, and they are important,” Sidelinger said. Those steps included getting vaccinated, wearing masks in crowded facilities indoors and staying home when sick. On the vaccine front, a new vaccine will soon be available in Oregon, Sidelinger said. The CDC recently approved the Novavax vaccine for use in the United States. The twodose vaccine is different than any other currently available for COVID. It is not the MRNA vaccine like Pfizer and Moderna and not the vectra vaccine like Johnson and Johnson. Instead, Novavax uses the traditional system where a portion of the actual virus is used to help the body build up immunity. The technology is used in most vaccines worldwide. Early testing before Omicron showed in was 90% effective in stopping transmission and 100% effective in preventing severe illness. Sidelinger said it will be arriving in the state soon. He also said while vaccines have not stopped all prevention of COVID, they remain the best tool in preventing hospitalizations and deaths. “I want to thank the nearly 7 in 10 Oregonians who have completed the vaccination series,” Sidelinger

David Rupkalvis Country Media As Monkeypox continues to slowly move through the United States, including cases in Oregon, the Oregon Health Authority is using a threepronged approach to reach out to those at greatest risk. Dr. Tim Menza, senior health adviser for the hMPXV response at the OHA Public Health Division, said there has been one confirmed case in Oregon, with five presumptive cases. Three of those presumptive cases were announced Wednesday, coming from Multnomah, Washington and Lane counties. Menza said the outbreak worldwide has seen 7,243 cases in 52 countries. In the U.S., there has been 605 cases in 34 states. While hPMXV can be passed to anyone, the current outbreak is having a greater impact on the LGBTQ community. “Typically, HMPXV has an incubation of six to 13 days, but can be s long as 21 days,” Menza said. “It starts with fever, headache, swollen lymph nodes and exhaustion. The rash may appear at the same time or five days later. The rash can be painful or itchy and moves through predictable stages. The illness lasts two to four weeks.” The virus has a fatality rate of 1 to 3 percent. That’s the typical virus. But in the current outbreak, things are different, Menza said. “In the current outbreak, the presentation is a little atypical,” he said. “The initial flu-like symptoms can occur but its sometimes very mild or not present. The location,
appearance and duration of rash are also atypical in that the rash is presenting more diffusely. The rash can be subtle and may move through typical stages more quickly.” Because the symptoms are generally milder, it creates a little more risk because people may ignore the symptoms and not seek care. Many that do, go to outpatient clinics. Menza said doctors also may not recognize the symptoms because they vary from the norm. Monkeypox is also frequently confused with other sexually-transmitted diseases such as syphillis and herpes. hMPXV is transmitted during direct, close, personal skin-to-skin contact with a person with symptoms. In addition, contact with towels, clothing, bedding or other objects used by a person with the virus can also transmit the virus. Additionally, hMPXV can be transmitted through large respiratory droplets or oral fluids via prolonged face-to-face contact. These types of contact may occur during activities such as sex, cuddling, massage, kissing, talking closely or caring for someone with hMPXV. Menza urged those at risk, especially in the LGBTQ community, to consider the risk when deciding what activities to do. “We can think about risk on a spectrum,” he said. “For example, events like sporting events or concerts, where people are more likely to be fully clothed and unlikely to have skin-to-skin contact, are safer, compared to clubs and parties where people are wearing minimal clothing and there is often skin-to-skin contact or
spaces like saunas, bathhouses or sex clubs, where there is minimal to no clothing and often sexual contact.” Menza said the cases, confirmed and presumed, in Oregon were originally associated with travel. But recent cases do not have travel as a concern, indicating the virus is starting to spread within the community. He said the average person with hPMXV will transmit the virus to two others. When compared to COVID-19, where the Omicron virus was transmitted to eight others, the risk for community spread is much lower. Menza said OHA is working on a three-pronged approach with the virus. Information OHA has released guidance and testing procedures to healthcare providers. It is working with community based organizations to present information, mostly to the LGBTQ community. In the next week, OHA will also establish a provider advisory group. Testing Menza said OHA will now allow providers to send specimens directly to the state lab without prior approval, which is a change from the previous rules. In addition, Labcorp will offer testing with turnaround time of one to three days. Other private labs are likely to start offering testing. Prevention There is a vaccine for hPMXV, but doses are limited and used only in confirmed cases or close contacts with
confirmed cases. The vaccine is effective both before and after someone is infected. Menza said Oregon has 193 doses of the vaccine, with further federal allocation pending. With the limited supply of vaccine, OHA has focused of vaccinating confirmed partners of people with HPMXV. “When more vaccine becomes available, our goal is to offer vaccination to those at increased risk of exposure to hMPXV, including cisgender and transgender men who have sex with men and transgender women who have sex with men with more than one sex partner in the prior two weeks,” he said. An anti-viral treatment is also available to those with confirmed cases, but there are only 25 in the state. Menza urged those at risk to keep a close watch on their bodies. If they are sick, stay home and do not get too close to partners. If they see a rash, have a doctor check it out. “If providers aren’t sure if they should send for HPMXV testing, we are here to offer guidance,” Menza said. “Local health authorities are also key resources.” While most cases are mild, hMPXV disease can be severe, including hemorrhagic disease, severe rash over large areas of skin, infection of the central nervous system, eye infections or sepsis. Antiviral treatment is available for people with, or are at risk for, severe disease, including children younger than 8, pregnant people, people with compromised immune systems, people with atopic dermatitis or a blistering skin disease.

illamook Girl Scout Troop #13020 had a fun outing in Cape Meares earlier this month. Karen Walz, who volunteers with the troop, arranged a hike from our village to the Cape Meares Lighthouse. Five girls, the troop leader and Karen hiked 4.25 miles round trip with an 800-foot elevation gain; what great exercise! Although most of the group had never been on a big hike like this before, they prepared well with snacks and water in their day packs and by wearing appropriate clothing. They also learned about edible foods,

Allgeier has worked in libraries for the past seventeen years. His most recent position was Director of Operations for the Multnomah County Libraries in Portland where he supervised Human Resources, Library Facilities, Finance, and Project Management. Two of our volunteer firefighters responded to the emergency and stopped traffic leaving Cape Meares; they were on duty for nearly four hours. Another Cape Meares volunteer firefighter and his wife were in Tillamook heading home; they had to wait at the Memaloose parking lot until limited traffic flow resumed about 7:30 p.m. Rather unnervingly, they drove under electrical wires, held high on a crane,
as they headed west. The car wreck obliterated a power pole, and a new one had to be installed. Tillamook PUD responded valiantly, as ever, and had power back on in Cape Meares by about 10 p.m. Fortunately, we have heard no reports of anyone seriously injured in this accident. It’s a sobering reminder, however, that Bayocean Road is narrow and curvy, dangerous in any weather. Please slow down out there, folks! Get ready to drive on up the road for a fun event at the Bay City Arts Center, 5680 A Street. There will be
a reception from 5-7 p.m. on Aug. 5 to kick off a monthlong showing of Kirsten Blair’s acrylic paintings. Kirsten, a full-time Cape Meares resident, specializes in abstract paintings of the environment. The dozen or so paintings she will have on display at the Bay City Arts Center portray eel grass she has come across on her long, meditative walks on our beach. I am looking forward to seeing the beautiful colors and light reflections Kirsten has captured in her paintings. I hope you, too, will make a trip to see Kirsten’s work sometime next month.

Donations of water may be dropped off at the Fire Station on 6th or inside at City Hall.

Pretty amazing to me how many snack wrappers, fast food wrappers (from restaurants not in this county), beverage containers, hot and cold cups, cigarette packs, personal hygiene items, clothing, gloves and masks are tossed from a moving vehicle. If you’re going on a road trip, please keep a bag for your refuse in the car until it can be dropped at a rest stop or gas station when you fill up. Some items are a result of not tarping/securing a load in a pickup or trailer. This also applies to loose items in the open bed of a pickup. Other
people have created dumping sites at “pullouts” along the highway. Please help keep our highways clean and beautiful. This Friday, July 29th, the Garibaldi Food Pantry will be open from 10:00 a.m. until noon. It was pretty quiet last time it was open, so we hope to see you there this week! LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Let’s get Betsy on the Ballot!
Betsy Johnson as governor is the best thing that could happen for Tillamook County. She understands our issues, needs and concerns, and she has proven herself to be a powerful ally for our community. She is personable and responsive and she gets things done. In her twenty years as our state senator, Betsy helped countless local individuals, families, farms, businesses and organizations. I don’t know how many people she went to bat for during COVID who couldn’t get their unemployment, but it was A LOT. Literally hundreds of Tillamook County residents have Betsy’s cell phone number because she gave it to us when we called her for help. Imagine what it will mean for Tillamook County to have a governor who knows us and loves us and will take our calls. Just think about that for a minute. Betsy is the only candidate for governor who has deep, committed
ties to our community. Betsy’s campaign kickoff in Astoria was a who’s who of current and past elected leaders including county commissioners, state representatives, mayors and city council members from at least three counties, both Democrats and Republicans. Elected leaders support Betsy because we’ve worked with her and we know how powerful she is, how effective and accessible and fair, and how hard she’ll fight to help us. Some of the most important work ahead is bridging the ever widening gap between Democrats vs Republicans, liberals vs conservatives including within our own parties, urban vs rural, etc., working together instead working against each other. We are much stronger together than divided. Betsy is the only candidate for governor who will lead a bipartisan state government, bringing together both parties, urban and rural, the best ideas and the brightest minds to solve problems we all share as Oregonians.
Betsy’s candidacy is a rare opportunity to elect an unaffiliated governor who will truly represent everyone. In fact, she would be the first woman unaffiliated governor in the history of the nation. Some of my Democrat friends are worried that Betsy will peel away enough moderate Dem votes to make a Republican win a possibility. I don’t think so. I think a lot of Oregonians are sick of hyper partisanship and ready for a change. Betsy is the only candidate who is coming up the middle, offering refuge and hope to both parties and to the vast numbers of unaffiliated/undecided voters. In a local meeting of bipartisan Betsy supporters, a prominent Republican farmer shared recently that he hopes that his fellow Republicans recognize that Drazen can’t win in Oregon, and understand that their only real choices are Betsy or Kotek. I have yet to vote for a candidate with whom I agree 100 percent, and this election

ummertime...and there is so much going on at the library! We still have the summer reading program active for a few more weeks, with activities and prizes for all ages. Believe it or not, it is not too late to sign up. If you are like me and realize the summer is flying by and you still haven’t decided on a vacation destination, look no further than your library’s travel section. We have guidebooks covering every fun destination you can imagine. However, if your time is short or your funds are lacking, I have another idea for you. Visit our library website and put in a search for “outdoor games”. The search results will reveal dozens of fun books you can check out that will inspire you to try all kinds of wonderful activities. This might not qualify as a vacation, but it could just help you have an exciting end to your summer activities without spending a dime. I am especially fond of the books that feature some of the old-fashioned games...the kind I used to play as a kid with the neighbors on my block. Have any of you ever played “kick the can”? It combines tag, hide and seek, and capture the flag...all into one exciting

game! In my hometown neighborhood, we used an old metal Butter-Nut coffee can and placed it at “home base”. The person who was “it” (also called the seeker), would stay by the can, close their eyes, and count to 20 while the rest of us hid somewhere around the yard. The seeker would then open their eyes and try to guard the can while carefully edging away, trying to spot any of the people hiding. If the seeker saw one of us hiding, it was a race back to the can to see if the hider or the seeker could kick the can first. If the seeker kicked the can first, the hiding person would be captured and have to sit in “jail” until all the other hiders were caught... or until one of the hiders kicked the can first and set all the jailed people free. We could play that game for hours, and it got even more fun at dusk or after when

it was harder to see people hiding. Oh, and here’s another fun upcoming library event! Have you ever wondered what it is like to play a harp? If so, we have a fun musical program planned at the Tillamook Library on Saturday, July 30. This program is actually years in the making, as we had it scheduled way back in 2020 when the pandemic was just getting started. After rescheduling this several times, we are finally confident it is going to happen this time. It is both a harp workshop that will start at 11:00 am that day, and a 3:00 pm concert. You can come to either or both events...HOWEVER, you need to sign up in advance for the workshop part. Space is limited so call the library at 503-842-4792 to see if there is still room to sign up. You must be twelve years of age or older to take part in the workshop. The concert will feature two experienced musicians, Lisa Lynne and Aryeh Frankfurter. I noted Rodney’s aloha shirt and jaunty straw hat after listening to them play a few songs. “The way Rodney is dressed,” I said to friends sitting with us, “they should play a little Jimmy Buffett.” Two songs later, the pair started playing “Margaritaville.” (Now why can’t I have that kind of luck with lottery numbers?) If Rodney’s name seems familiar, you might have caught it in my column some weeks ago about the production of “Arsenic and Old Lace” with the Riverbend Players at NCRD. Rodney played the psychopathic serial killer Jonathan Brewster, who threatens to dispatch his brother Mortimer during the last act of the play. Rodney’s mellifluous baritone voice provided the perfect balance of suspense and comedy for Jonathan’s blend of comedy and madness. It’s equally well suited to music — though it was Doral’s contralto that gave a lush depth to Van Morrison’s “Moondance.” While their shows focus on tight arrangements of popular songs, Doral is a songwriter herself. She is currently putting the finishing touches on a series of her own compositions, which she plans to release on CD soon. These promise to be interesting, with more musical complexity and range. “They’re not just a lot of three-chord songs,” she said after a recent show at the Blue Heron in Tillamook. Other places you can catch them: The couple regularly performs at the Tillamook Eagles Lodge, to as far afield as the WineKraft Wine Bar in Astoria. OBITUARIES Diane Cathleen Tratz Aug. 21, 1951 - July 1, 2022
I
n the distance, new waves could be heard rolling in, as old ones were pulled back out to the Pacific. Evergreens swayed in a gentle breeze, towering overhead. Birds sang their tunes throughout the forest & a summer sun had fended off the morning’s clouds, revealing the vibrant colors of flowers in full bloom. All signs seemed to show that a peaceful & loving send-off for Diane Cathleen Tratz was in motion. It was on the afternoon of July 1st, 2022, that the birds gave pause, a sign of their observance, as Diane passed away peacefully, whilst at her home in Rockaway Beach. Diane was born in Coos Bay, Oregon on August 21, 1951 to Myrtle L. Johnson
and Walter E. Adam and was later adopted by John L. Bitcon, whom Diane called, Dad. She had two sisters Mary and Caroline. All of whom Diane is reunited with. Her life was full of travels that lead her across the US and Europe. Diane served as a civilian working with the Army Corps of Engineering. Her career eventually took her to Oregon, and she served in Iraq and Afghanistan. She met her husband, Steve; and found herself back at the Oregon Coast. Together they got to spend her final years quietly along the Oregon Coast. Making everlasting memories with their children and grandchildren. She was a woman of resilience & a touch of magic; Diane adored her painting, gardening, animals, & family above all, and all of which were present & beside her as she made her final transition. She is survived by her husband, Steven Tratz and her three children, Tyler Frans, Lisa Knudtson, & Paul Daneker. A memorial service will be held on July 30th, 2022 at 1pm at Wuad’s Funeral Home, following will be a small luncheon at the family home. Anyone who wishes to share in her memory is welcome.

atthew Willard Stephens was born in Portland, Oregon on March 25, 1957, He passed away at his Pacific City home on July 13, 2022, at the age of 65. Matt grew up in Sacramento, California. Matt completed his college education at Oregon State University in December, 1980, with a major in Health and Physical Education. Matt met Stefni Olson while he was attending Oregon State and they were married February 7, 1981, in Ontario, Oregon. Their 3 daughters, Tassay, Krissa, and Deedra, were born in Caldwell, Oregon. Matt went back to school to earn his credential in Science Education and when he finished, he went to work for the Payette School District where Stefni was already teaching. He taught high school science and coached multiple sports

ames C. (Jim) Fields brought joy and wisdom to everyone he crossed paths with during his nearly 90 years of life. He peacefully passed away July 18, 2022, at the age of 89. Jim was preceded in death by his wife Sharon, parents Marshal and Gladys, and brothers Robert and Richard.
Jim was born October 1, 1932, in Amity, Oregon and spent the majority of his adolescent life in Eugene, Oregon. He served his country during the Korean War and utilized the GI Bill to earn a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Oregon State University. The majority of his professional career was spent with Shell Oil Company, eventually owning a distributorship in Roseburg, Oregon. Upon retirement he earned his real estate brokerage license, continuing his passion of working in the business world. Jim loved spending time with friends and family, working on and restoring classic cars, hunting, and fishing, traveling, reading, and playing the stock market. Jim is survived by his four sons and spouses, Mike and Debra Fields of Dallas, TX, Scott and Cathy Fields of Long Beach, CA, Tom and Kathy Fields of Salem, OR, John and Brenda Cooper of Cloverdale, OR and daughter Shawna Schotanus of Monument, CO, 20 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
William Patrick ‘Pat’ Olson
Matthew W Stephens March 25, 1957 - July 13, 2022 including basketball and volleyball. They lived in the Payette/Ontario area until 1991 when they moved back to Corvallis. Matt taught in several different school districts including Salem and Corvallis. He and Stefni retired in 2014 and moved to Pacific City to live full time in their beach house. Matt was an avid fisherman and a board member of the Nestucca Anglers organization. He did enjoy other activities such as coin collecting, camping, playing his guitar, going for walks with his pugs, and vacationing in Mexico. But right up their next to fishing was spending time with his 7 grandchildren. He leaves behind his wife, 3 daughters, 7 grandchildren, 3 sisters, and a brother. Cremation arrangements are in care of Waud’s Funeral Home in Tillamook. A Celebration of Life will take place on August 8th from 2 to 5 pm at the Kiawanda Community Center in Pacific City, Oregon. at Olson passed away peacefully Wednesday, June 29, 2022, at his longtime home in the Nehalem Valley. Pat was born in Portland, Ore. He grew up in Taft where he first met the love of his life, Illa Faye, at Taft Elementary. They married in 1954 and were sweethearts their whole lives. Pat had the best and loudest laugh and was a hardworking provider for his family. He worked as a commercial fisherman, logger, heavy equipment operator, plumber, carpenter, and on the dredge crew for Nehalem Dredging. He was a talented and

Lee and Howard raised three children, all of whom are still living: Glenn Brassfield (Julie), Kathy Murphy (Mike) and Barbie McMellon (Rudy). They had many grandchildren and Lee loved them all dearly and enjoyed babysitting them when they were little. Lee worked right alongside Howard on their dairy farm full time until they sold the cows in the mid-80s and retired from dairy farming. And this lady could cook! She was famous for her huge cinnamon rolls and that wonderful Friday night fried chicken at the Hebo Inn, among many other wonderful dishes she cooked. Lee enjoyed her family most of all but she also loved visiting with friends. She sewed most of the families’ clothes for many years, loved quilting and made hundreds of gorgeous quilts, was quite proficient on the home computer and loved taking pictures and making greeting cards. She had quite the green thumb and enjoyed gardening and mowing the lawn. She had a brilliant smile she shared often and a contagious laugh. Mom was the most naturally kind and sweet person I’ve ever known. She is and will be forever missed.

ee Brassfield was born in Magazine, Arkansas on March 17, 1933, to Columbus Ambrose Kilburn and Joella Winders Kilburn. She passed away on July 8, 2022. Lee grew up on a small rural farm with no electricity or indoor bathroom until age 19. She had no siblings but cherished the many cousins she grew up with and stayed in touch with them all her life. Lee worked as an optometrist’s assistant in Booneville, Arkansas until age 24 when she met Howard “Pete” Brassfield on a blind date when he was in the Army. They were married 3 months later and enjoyed a long and happy life together-64 years! She was preceded in death by Howard on October 31, 2019.

s we move past our June graduation ceremony at TBCC and into our short summer, we are initiating two big construction projects that will transform the college. One is our new Healthcare Education Building that the voters of Tillamook County approved in May, which will focus on housing our new nursing program that is currently being developed and all our other growing number of healthcare programs. The other construction project is the renovation of our new Center for Industrial Technology (CIT) building across the street from

I told her I’m pretty sure I’m Chair of the Planning Commission as part of a
the main campus. Both of these projects highlight the emphasis we are placing on Career-Technical Education (CTE) programs at TBCC. These programs prepare graduates of a CTE degree or certificate program with the skills needed to obtain a good paying job in a career with excellent opportunities. The College has expanded the number of CTE programs over the past five years in different fields for those people that want to stay locally and find a higher paying, rewarding career. The CIT building was purchased by TBCC in November 2020 and was previously the Mechtronics auto repair business on Third Street.

received word last month that TBCC was awarded the grant! As Governor Brown responded upon learning we received the grant, “It will expand hands-on training programs at TBCC’s Center for Industrial Technology, equipping students with the skills they need to access high-demand, good-paying career opportunities in the manufacturing and industrial technology sectors. With this investment, TBCC will continue stepping up to meet the needs of Tillamook County employers today and into the future.” Now we can begin the process to hire a project manager and architecture firm to help us design the renovation work that will include

Though they are woefully understaffed, ODOT has been incredibly helpful with us so far. Then I gave her my email and asked her to CC me on the correspondence so I could stay looped in case she ran into issues. I should have known she didn’t need my help. In under a week, she had several positive exchanges with ODOT before reaching their sign coordinator. Within two days, the coordinator came to Garibaldi and put up the new green City Hall / Fire Department / Library signs that now (re-)appear on US
101 across from 6th St. Apparently a storm had blown them over, and something got lost in the shuffle. A story all too familiar. There ought to be statues made for folks like June Ekborg. While the ODOT project will be the meat & potatoes of the future of downtown Garibaldi, personal triumphs will be what sustains the wave of recent progress and overcomes the years of fishy neglect & deflect. It will take more June Ekborgs: someone who saw something, said something, and saw it through. Someone

We have no reason at this point to believe that more than one person was involved in distributing the offensive leaflets you may have seen in recent weeks, but one person is far too many when this kind of paranoia and falsehood is involved. Within living memory a world war erupted when these very ideas
overtook parts of Europe. Many millions of people died, including more than a million Americans, some of them our own parents and grandparents. Standing idly by, looking the other way when disturbed people begin to spread these lies again, is the worst form of disrespect for the sacrifices our parents and grandparents made. We do appreciate the prompt attention given to this matter by the Tillamook Police Department, and we are aware that the First Amendment prevents our government from suppressing even the ugliest political speech, but as private citizens and stewards of our civic health, the Central Committee of the Tillamook County Democratic Party will not tolerate the ideology expressed in these leaflets. We make no allowances for open-mindedness on this subject. We condemn anti-semitism, and we affirm our love and support for the Jewish members of our community. Will you do the same? I was a disappointed in the recent article on TillaBay Farms in the Tillamook Headlight Herald. While most of this Dairy Feature article was quite interesting, the reporter chose to include some concerning mis-information about the proposed power lines that will run through this property. Specifically, the reporter chose to quote Mr. Kurt Mizee as saying “Another challenge that Mizee is faced with is the Oceanside (electrical power) Transmission Line, which will run through Tilla-Bay Farms and adversely affect not only their farm, but five other farms. It will de-value farms, not to mention the potential health risk to cows and one family from EMF (electro-magnetic field) that has been proven time and time again to cause cancer from the negative neurons that radiate from such systems.” In short, there is absolutely no credible evidence that transmission lines pose potential risks to farm animals or people. None. Although this falsehood has been around a while, it has been debunked over and over again by the CDC, the NIH and other credible health authorities. While there persist anecdotal reports of associations between power lines and various diseases, anecdotal reports themselves carry no credible proof. It

I wish that the reporter had recognized that Mr. Mizee’s statement dealt with a controversial topic for which many unsubstantiated and false rumors continue to percolate. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Try plant based foods to save the earth Record heat waves in America and Europe endanger millions, as wildfires rage, in a brutal manifestation of man-induced global warming. Each of us can reduce our personal contribution by cutting back on consumption of animal foods, which account for a whopping portion of “greenhouse gases.” Carbon dioxide is released by burning forests to create animal pastures. Methane and nitrous oxide are released from digestive tracts of cows and sheep and from animal waste pits.
In an environmentally sustainable world, vegetables, fruits, and grains must replace animal food products in our diet, just as wind, solar, and other renewable energy sources replace fossil fuels. The next trip to our favorite supermarket provides a great opportunity to explore the delicious, healthful, eco-friendly plant-based meat and ice cream products in the frozen food section. Here are the results of the NALC annual food drive for 2022. Only nine branches participated in Oregon. Tillamook was fifth with 2,679 lbs of food collected. Overall the NALC collected 35,658,590 LBs! I just want to say thank you to the people of Tillamook county for the generous donations of food. All of our food stayed right here in Tillamook County distributed to our food banks both north, south, and central. Thanks also to our Tillamook food bank for their time and help in getting the food collected. We could not have achieved success without their assistance!
Kitchen Maven Cookbook: Local author donates pandemic cookbook to the Oregon Food Bank When the 2020 pandemic brought upheaval to everyone on the planet, Oregon grandmother, home chef, and food writer Judi Berman-Yamada (Kitchen Maven) set to work, in near isolation, writing her bucket list cookbook to benefit the Oregon Food Bank and her neighbors experiencing food insecurity in these challenging times. While creating her cookbook, Yamada began eating better (she lost forty pounds), moving more and improved her own health. “This ongoing shortage has become more crucial than ever as local hunger relief programs observed a 40% rise in food insecurity and the need for assistance during the pandemic,” cited Yamada. “Access to nourishing food is difficult for countless people in rural, inner city and low-income communities. To maintain services for those affected by food insecurity, local Food Banks and other food relief agencies need continued aid. Whether we make donations, volunteer time, grow and distribute food, or even contribute a cookbook, we can all help.” All (100%) author royalties for retail and online sales will go directly from the publisher, Gatekeeper Press, to the Oregon Food Bank (OFB). Oregon needs a good leader I would like to point out to “why bother?” That the governor we have now, is the most hated governor in the United States for the second year in a row. And this is because she is not interested in making Oregon a livable state, she cares not for the citizens that live here, and she does not
represent them. Unfortunately the Democrats in our legislature don’t represent us either, because under Kate Brown the Dems vote the way they are told or they suffer the consequences. We are a heavily taxed state and I see no benefit at all to citizens for the money that we pay to live here. Tina Kotek and her woke followers will be twice as bad as Gov. Brown. Trump is what people say when they have nothing intelligent to add to the conversation. I think Christine Drazen would offer more than ten times the leadership of Kate Brown, and I think Betsy Johnson is equally a good choice. e may be coming in on the last month of summer, but there are still plenty of local, family friendly events taking place right here in Tillamook County (for free!) Whether it’s wandering down Laneda Avenue in Manzanita to enjoy the local poetry displays or joining a guided tour to learn about our salt marsh habitats, there is something for everyone over the next couple weeks. These opportunities make for a great excuse to round up some friends and family to enjoy the summer weather - and a huge thank you to the local organizations who are hosting these events for free! STELLA’S STORY: July 7, 2022 United Paws, received a call, from the Tillamook Co-Op on 101. The employees at the Co-Op, heard a kitten crying, under a pile of pallets, and horse fencing behind the store. The emaciated, sweet baby girl, was covered in cobwebs, dirt, and an asphalt type substance. She had a cut on her little sweet nose, and cheek. Stella was fed and hydrated immediately. Stella was literally starving, and dehydrated. Her ribs were showing, and she was so frail. After some very nutritious food and water, she was bathed, and wrapped in a warm blanket, and given hundreds of kisses. Stella was de-wormed, vaccinated, fed very nutritious wet and dry food with probiotics, for her tummy. It was heartbreaking to discover, Stella had survived, and kept herself alive, by eating straw. Stella’s first few poo’s were filled with straw, she cried, and whimpered, when trying to pass the straw, from her frail body. I know... TMI, but it shows her determination and will to survive... Miss Stella, most likely, was stuck in those pallets, and horse fencing for a few days. We have no idea, how she arrived at the Co-Op. The location, is so dangerously close to the HWY. It’s possible, Stella could’ve been running, from loud

fireworks on the 4th. We don’t want to believe, that Stella was dumped at the feed store, or somewhere close. Whatever the situation was, she’s a survivor!!! Stella loves to be held, she purrs the minute she’s picked up. She loves to cuddle and she’s very playful. Stella will make someone a wonderful companion she’s a lover. Stella would also be, a wonderful emotional support animal. She’s that sweet! Please consider adopting Stella.
