COVID-19 cases increase, outbreak at Denny’s T
illamook County Health Department reported during a Tillamook County Board of Commissioners meeting Wednesday, July 14, 11 COVID-19 cases from July 9 through July 11 and 22 cases from July 6 through July 12. “We’re seeing an increase in the number of cases,” Administrator Marlene Putman said. These cases include one vaccinated person. The other cases were unvaccinated individuals. The health center’s public health team has been performing case investigation. Putman said a COVID-19 outbreak has occurred at Denny’s in Tillamook. Oregon Health Authority defines an outbreak as five or more people testing positive for COVID-19. Putman said things are under control with staff and reaching out to individuals. “We’ve had 705 positive cases,
Oregon Heritage Tradition The 61st Dory Days parade took place Saturday, July 17, in Pacific City. The parade formed at the county boat ramp at Sunset, across the Beachy Bridge on Pacific Avenue to the center of town and north to the grocery store. The theme this year was “Celebrating farming, fishing, and forestry.” There was a collection of dory boats, classic cars, Smokey the Bear, grand marshals Al and Bernice Jensen, dory princess Sophie Nelson, and junior dory princess Zoey Roberts. More helicopters added to help knockout Game Hog Creek Fire S
teep terrain where the Game Hog Creek Fire is burning in the Tillamook State Forest has made it difficult for firefighters to deepen their control lines encircling the fire. Thursday, July 15, the fire pushed through those lines to burn three more acres. A helicopter has been helping with airdrops of water onto the fire. It was joined by another helicopter on Friday, July 16, with an additional helicopters used on the fire for air drops on Saturday, July 17. The water they drop will help cool hot spots so that embers in the interior of the fire have less chance of being blown across control lines. As of Friday, about 80 ground crew remained engaged on the wildfire, which is entirely within the state forest in timber and slash. Their goal last last week was to extend control lines down to Elk Creek. Cooler air from the ocean has moved over the fire, which should aid firefighters. The Tillamook State Forest remains open to visitors with the exception of Drift Creek and Idiot Creek forest roads and the Fear and Loaming mountain bike trail. These are closed due to fire activity in the area. Rogers Camp trailhead is being used as a staging area for firefighters and is also closed to the public. Hwy 6 and 26 to the coast remain open and unaffected by the fire. No evacuations are associated with this fire. Cause of the fire is still under investigation. B.M.W. with a female driver on Hwy. 26 with speeds at 90 plus. The driver of the B.M.W. then went south on 101 passing Manzanita into Nehalem then continued south towards Wheeler. Manzanita Police Office John Garcia set up spike strips at 101 and 53. The B.M.W. ran over them and flattened all four tires then continued into Wheeler were it spun out at 101 and Hemlock. According to reports, officers tried to get her out at gun point but had to break a window. She was transported by Tillamook ambulance to Seaside hospital

Manzanita citizens comment on city hall petition M

anzanita citizens provided input about the city hall petition during a council meeting Wednesday, July 7. The petition circulated in May. A petition signed by 260 Manzanita residents in May asked the council to give the remodeling option of the Underhill Plaza a fair evaluation as an option for the new city hall. Citizens who submitted their names on the petition had the opportunity to speak during public comment and discuss the city hall project and how their input could be utilized. Carol Kennedy, on behalf of Will Stone, conducted a presentation on the petition. “A petition of the citizens of Manzanita was presented at the May 5 city council meeting,” Kennedy said. “The petition respectfully requested that the city council provide citizens with more options for the city and police department headquarters.” Kennedy said the citizens asked for a remodel option of the Underhill property. The petition came about after the Manzanita Listens workshops, as citizens were told any remodel option was off the table. “The petition was signed by 260 Manzanita residents,” Kennedy said. “It was accompanied by a letter from Will Stone, whom I’m representing, relaying the history and rationale for the request.” Interim City Manager John Kunkel had placed the petition on the July agenda, Kennedy added. The petition was removed from the agenda. The citizens comment portion of the meeting was utilized for citizens to address their concerns. Each citizen had three minutes, although Kennedy, being the presenter of the petition, was given 10 minutes to speak. Rockaway Beach storyteller presents new design book, “Storytelling” Hilary Dorsey Staff Writer
Local marketer, photographer and storyteller Mike Arseneault has written a new book, “Storytelling.” The book features a collection of short stories, vintage and new photography, the history of Rockaway Beach and other places of historical significance in Tillamook County. A limited number of books have been printed as a collector’s piece. The book comes in a custom designed envelope. The book provides ample photos and was created for people who have a passion for the north coast. To honor Rockaway Beach and north county, the book went on sale for locals first July 9 at Simply Charming, located at 130 S. Hwy 101 in Rockaway Beach. A book signing took place July 17. An official book launch will take place at 1 p.m. Sat-
urday, July 31 at the Garibaldi Historic U.S. Coast Guard Boathouse, located at 1209 Bay Lane in Garibaldi. Books can be purchased and signed at the launch. Arseneault will also talk about themes, his creative process and personal
highlights. A small book launch event will also take place at 4 p.m. Aug. 8 at the Hoffman Center for the Arts, located at 594 Laneda Ave. in Manzanita.

teve and Karen Walz drove into Portland to pick up Karen’s sister, Diane, on June 28; yes, that was the day Portland hit 116 degrees! All three were glad to get over to the coast. Diane, from Southern California, enjoyed two lovely weeks in Cape Meares. She walked on the beach, saw whales in Depoe Bay, visited the Blue Heron and the Tillamook Cheese
Factory, rode in the July 4th parade, and had a fun boat ride amongst other “coastie” activities. One night, Karen hosted a chick flick (“Queen Bees”) and pizza night to introduce her sister to a couple of Karen’s Cape Meares friends. All in all, it was a wonderful two weeks, and Karen was thrilled that her sister was able to relax and chill in our little village.
At a Cape Meares auction a couple of years ago, Merrie and Jon Ziady bought a birdhouse made by Randy Klobas. They report that swallows finally set up home in that birdhouse this spring, providing much entertainment for the Ziadys and their guests. The babies have now fledged and the birdhouse is empty; Merrie and Jon will
have to wait to see if the show is renewed for next season. The lot at the top of the 3rd St. NW is being cleared off for house building. Wow, what a change to have all those trees taken down. The homeowner will have fantastic view of the ocean, Bayocean Spit, Cape Meares Lake, and Tillamook Bay… plus will be high enough to be out of the tsunami zone. Good planning! Wildfire season is already well underway, unfortunately. The Bootleg fire in southern Oregon has burned more than 200,000. I just received an alert that the Oregon Dept. of Forestry is fighting a fire in the Tillamook State Forest. We all remember last year’s raging wildfires, air quality alerts, evacuations and more.
Our Cape Meares volunteer firefighters even got involved fighting the Pike Road Fire up by Bay City over Labor Day last year. What can we do to get ready for wildfires right here in Cape Meares this year? Charles Sanders, a 40-year veteran of wildfire fighting, suggests the following: 1. Remove dead vegetation, leaves, spruce needles, and other debris from around your home’s foundation. 2. Don’t forget to clear debris from under porches or decks where the wind piles things up. 3. Remove tree limbs closer than 10 feet from the ground so they won’t become “ladder fuels,” allowing flames to climb higher and into adjacent trees.
4. Keep tree branches trimmed back to 10 feet between trees. 5. Remove tree branches that overhang your roof. 6. Don’t stack firewood alongside your home. 7. Position fuel tanks, including the one for your barbecue, away from your house. 8. Have plenty of hoses on hand to deploy in the event of a wildfire. 9. Consider having a roof of metal, slate or other noncombustible material to prevent wind-blown embers from catching your roof on fire. 10. Have a grab-and-go bag ready (the same one you have ready for the earthquake and tsunami). Stay safe and stay cool this summer, neighbors!

y little piece of Cloverdale is looking better kept now that it has a fresh coat of gray paint. Thanks to grandson Logan Morrow, and his friend Luke Caliri who brushed a layer of recycled paint onto three sides of the first floor exterior during a visit last week. Metro’s recycled paint sells in five gallon buckets for just $24 at Tillamook Habitat for Humanity. The local nonprofit is open from 10-5 Wednesday through Saturday. It’s located across U.S. Highway from Tillamook Cheese Factory. The Tillamook Association for the Performing Arts (TAPA) will host an opening

he following words were used to describe our communities friend, Ann Swain, who recently passed away; entertainer, funny,
spunky and direct, warm, genuine, loved, friendly smile, bright ray of sunshine, real trooper, nice, awesome smile, shining light, sassy yet
kind, amazing, beautiful and beautiful spirit. Wow, that really describes Ann, a woman that loved the community of Rockaway Beach. Among the many hats she wore in our community were Mayor, Chamber of Commerce volunteer and train conductress. But if course, that only scratches the surface. Ann also loved to entertain family and friends with her singing anywhere she could find karaoke. She was born on March 11, 1930 and passed away on June 21 2021. Ann Swain’s celebration of life will be Saturday, August 21st at the St. Mary’s by the Sea parish hall. Yummy and hot diggity! The Lions Club will be selling their delicious hot dogs on July 23-26 at our Rockaway Beach wayside! Be sure to check them out. They have my husband, Dale’s, stamp of approval. The Get fit with Rhonda & Friends will be hiking the Kilchis Point Reserve on the 21st of July. The next week, July 28th, they will be walking the Neahkahnie School Track. With varying motivations among the three groups, and with some demographic variations among the groups in terms of age and wealth, it is not surprising that the groups (while not monoliths) approach local issues differently.” It all boils down to how we pay for the services we receive, which at present mainly comes down to taxing the users of STRs. Of course, a good many residents are fine with this formula and see nothing wrong with attracting additional STR visitors – and with them, their tax revenue. Others, however, say that encouraging visitors to come here has had an adverse impact on our quality of life, and besides, it costs us more in terms of extra public safety, public works, etc. We’re often told that our economy depends on tourism, but is that really true for 600plus fulltime residents? Isn’t the primary occupation for them to simply be ‘retired.’? Don’t they rely primarily on their investments, and/or their monthly Social Security

contentious Manzanita City Council meeting took place earlier this month regarding the cost, size and location of the village’s new City Hall. The debate that ensued, in my estimation, is the overarching story of life in and around north Tillamook County, for the various disputes Manzanita and other similar communities grapple with are, in essence, really about the cultural divides that exist among us. We don’t have the kind of population diversity in Manzanita, which, unfortunately, underlies many of the political conflicts that occurs across the country. But we have our own kind of diversity – fulltime residents, second-homeowners, and Short-Term Rental (STR) owners.” Each group has their own motivations. The majority of full-timers are here to live their lives in a “small village environment” that they long craved, while second homeowners may hover somewhere
checks? The shops and bistros are nice to have, but they exist primarily to attract visitors. Seaside is fully dependent on tourism, while we in Manzanita are impacted by it. If any of us cared to build a thriving community, and hoped to promulgate the kind of social connectedness that is the hallmark of great places to live, one most likely would not choose a path by which the vast majority of our houses sit idle for massive chunks of the year. Ironically, most people who visit or look to become second-homeowners are lured to Manzanita because it is supposedly this quaint little village by the sea. But, the more the quaint village becomes addicted to outsider tax revenue, the less quaint it is. Then, add to that the reality that those who cast their ballot here pay less of the tab than those who don’t, and the needs and wants on either side of the dividing line often seem to diverge. If our lawmakers focus

But tastes change as we mature and perhaps you need to take a stroll through a different section of the library to see what catches your eye. It’s OK to not finish a book. If you are not enjoying the book you are reading, simply stop reading it immediately and move on. There is no sense in slogging through a novel you are not connecting with. And that is why it is important to always have a spare book or two ready to start at any given time. Get informed. Sometimes finding the right book takes a little effort. I know a lot of people who just look at the covers until they find something that attracts them visually. But an interesting cover doesn’t always make for a good read. Luckily, there are literally hundreds of ways to get book recommendations, often accompanied with a five-star rating system so you can see how well people liked the book. Many

am calling this week’s column, “how to read like a pro”. Many of you are perfectly happy with your reading habits, and that is great. But there are some of you out there who have been trying to be a reader but keep falling off track...or maybe you have not been reading at all. There was a time in my life when I was working 80 hours a week running my own business...while raising two kids...so Curious George and Dr. Seuss was about all the reading I got done! So, for those of you who are struggling a bit or maybe stuck in a reading rut, I would like to offer a few suggestions. Find your best time to read. Many folks try to do all of their reading at bedtime as a way to unwind and fall to sleep. Unfortunately, many of you fall asleep after barely getting through a page or two, and then have trouble remembering what you read the next day because your brain was already heading to dreamland. Take a look at your day and try to find another time to get 15 - 30 minutes of reading in. Get up early and read before breakfast. Or maybe just after lunch. (Access it from our webpage at www.tillabook. org) This site has many tools that help you hone in on the best books for YOU! Keep a record of what you read. Tracking your progress is a great way to stay motivated with your reading. Whether you just write them down on a pad of paper or on your computer...or better yet, create an online account to record your completed reading, you’ll be glad you took this step. I use the website called GoodReads to track my reading...and to read reviews before I decide whether to take the book home. It is totally free, and I can even write my own book reviews for other people to read. One nice feature of the reviews on GoodReads is they make sure to keep the comments spoiler free so you don’t accidentally find out the ending before you even start the book. I also love that at the end of the year, you can pull up a report of all the books you completed. There! That should get you started in reviving or starting your next reading adventure. And if all else fails, you can always ask your friendly Tillamook County Librarian for a recommendation!

And it includes the Chamber’s complete membership directory. The Chamber started publishing Tillamook Living last year. It was a project born out of conversations with business owners and community leaders about how we could recruit and retain new workers. In its simplest form, Tillamook Living is a tool to show off this place we are so lucky to live work and play in – and draw new talent into our ranks. Tillamook is the type of rural community where you know your mail carrier by name and rally together to help a neighbor in need. But unlike some rural towns, Tillamook also has three big name grocery stores, access to world class seafood and craft beer and ample opportunities to hike, paddle or fish in some of the most beautiful landscapes in the country! Tillamook has all the benefits of small town living without losing any of the big city amenities people want. And that’s a fact we must communicate with potential future residents! We need to show new residents how amazing Tillamook really is, and we believe Tillamook Living is the best way to do that. Speaking from my own
experience, the magazine was a really helpful tool in getting to know the community. My personal copy is dog eared and marked up in many places, and I still refer to it when I’m looking for a particular business or service in town. But I come to Tillamook from another small town. I already know the value of living in a rural community, and I seek out the special parts of a small town that make it great. I understand when the magazine says Tillamook has many community events, it doesn’t mean just events. It means beloved traditions unlike any event you’ve attended before. It means special moments the entire community looks forward to, so we can gather together and build relationships. People from larger cities might not be as adept at finding those special things or reading between the lines. So this year we are using a fresh set of eyes to redesign the magazine to better communicate the benefits of living in Tillamook. We plan to add multiple feature articles that highlight our businesses, our community leaders and our local industries. These articles will show off the personality of Tillamook. But more importantly, they will explicitly share how Tillamook stands out from other rural communities. The articles will answer the “why” in “Why move to Tillamook?” Once all is said and done, the Tillamook Living magazine will look very different from last year’s edition. But the publication will be even more useful for newcomers than the current edition. Copies will be available later this fall. And should you come across a copy of Tillamook Living later this year, I hope you’ll flip through and give the articles a read -- even if you’re a longtime resident. If we’ve done the redesign right, the magazine will give you a fresh set of eyes to remember why exactly you chose to live, work and play in Tillamook.

or my birthday this year, I received a very special gift from my family:
particular type of succulent would need to keep “Fred” happy. Turns out they are a hybrid variety of Graptopelatum and Echeveria succulents. Stay with me here… it gets a little confusing now. Finding out about Graptoveria lead me to finding out more about Graptopelatum. These are plants from Mexico and Arizona that are very similar to Echeveria, although to me they more closely resemble sedum. So naturally someone came up with the idea of crossing the Graptopelatum and Echeveria to form the Graptoveria varieties. Okay, now back to growing needs of Graptoveria. Because they are half Echeveria, they have basically the same growing conditions: well-drained soil, lots of sun, and not much water. Most varieties form tight rosettes and some can get to be 8” across and high. They are quite the chameleons, too, and can change colors from blue to pink to purple and even red depending on the light and watering conditions. The leaves are waxy and are are coated in farina (or epicuticular wax) that resembles powder. It is that farina that protects the leaves from the full intensity of the sun. The growing zone for Graptoveria ‘Fred Ives’ is USDA Zones 9 and 10. One of the websites I was visiting classified Tillamook County as a Zone 9, but to my knowledge we are still in Zone 8. So growing Graptoveria outside may be a little risky. Which is why I like growing in pots so they can be happy outside all summer and be brought inside for the winter. Not a bad idea anyway due to the winter rains. Other varieties of Graptoveria are listed as only Zone 10, so best to check on their zone classification before purchasing The Graptoveria ‘Fred Ives’ is said to be hard to kill – unless it is overwatered – and easy to propagate. It is also listed as being a fastgrowing plant. Sounds about perfect, right? And this little beauty has a good chance of blooming in
late spring or early summer if it is happy. The flowers are star-shaped and can be in any hues from orange to yellow to peachy-pink. Strong summer sunlight will make the blooms even more vivid. I am learning so much about succulents as I share information with you. Farina and epicuticular wax were both new terms for me. But earlier this year I learned about monocarpic vs polycarpic succulents. Monocarpic plants are those that expend so much energy into blooming that they die after the blooms fade. Polycarpic plants can go on living and blooming – sometimes for years – before they die. But have no fear if you have a monocarpic plant like a sempervivium because they will take three to four years to bloom and, in the meantime, also form multiple rosettes around its base (the “chicks” of hen-and-chicks) that can be repotted and left to mature. And yet another succulent term I have learned is etoliation. This is the elongation of stems in any plant when it is stressed due to lack of sunlight and temperatures that are too warm. Once a succulent starts etoliating, it won’t go back to being bushy and full. If you notice the stems stretching soon enough, you can slow the etoliation by exposing the plant to gradually increasing sunlight. Doing it too quickly may cause sunburn, so just give them 30 more minutes each day over three days until the plant stops stretching. Cooler temps with less water will help this condition as well. An etoliated plant that is past the point of repair can sometimes be helped by cutting off the top of the plant and repotting just the top rosette. The base of the plant left in the soil will often form tiny new rosettes along the stem, taking about 3 to 4 weeks to do so. More to come next month as we learn how to propagate the more common succulents and talk about the Kalanchoe varieties of plants.

These come right on time from a company called Succulent City and are varieties I probably wouldn’t have chosen for myself but that have turned into some of my favorites. One that I received for July was a new type of succulent to me called Graptoveria ‘Fred Ives.’ Not being familiar with Graptoveria succulents, I did some research to see what this

OBITUARIES Clarence W Boquist, 91
C
larence, better known as Bub to his friends and family, was born April 21st, 1930, to August and Dorothy (Vaughn) Boquist. Bub was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother. He fought a good fight but lost the battle on July 4th, 2021, surrounded by family. He graduated from Tillamook High School in 1948 and then in the fall of ’48, he attended Oregon State University for a short time. On February 23rd, 1951, Bub married Dolores (Dolly) Kindel, and together they had 6 children. They bought their first home in Idaville in 1952. Shortly after, he started working for Christenson Meat Company as a butcher then became a manager of the Tillamook Rendering Plant in Idaville until 1960. Along with managing the Rendering plant, he milked cow’s morning and night on the family farm. Bub and Dolly were able to buy the farm from Dorothy in 1960. Bub was a hardworking dairyman who was also an avid hunter. He enjoyed going on hunting trips with his sons in Tillamook and
occasionally hunting in Idaho with friends. Later in life, he discovered his love for horseshoes and participated in the Elks Picnic Tournaments. He and son, Steve, even won a few times!! He enjoyed playing Cribbage, watching Western movies, reading books (he used to joke that John Wayne was his hero!), smoking salmon in the old smoker, good games of marbles with the family at the holidays and trapping moles for neighbors, especially the Gienger farm. Bub was a leader of the community and instrumental in several local groups and organizations. He was a member of the Farm Bureau for over 60 years, President of Juno Water for over 50 years, a Lifetime member of the Elks, and a member of the following: Tillamook Bay Flood Improvement Organization, TCCA, Tillamook Soil and Water and The Pioneer Museum. He and Dolly also enjoyed attending St. John’s United Church of Christ for over 30 years. Bub is survived by wife Dolly of Tillamook, his only sister Joan Petty of Tillamook, children: Vicki Zielinski (John), Steve Boquist (Mary), Susan Boquist (Dennis Person), Daniel Boquist, Tom Boquist and Kathy Boquist. As well as several grand children and nieces and nephews. A service was hosted at Waud’s Funeral Home of Tillamook on Saturday, July 17. A Celebration of Life was held at St Johns United Church of Christ following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to an organization of your choosing.

ike was born in Tillamook, on April 10, 1970. He passed on from this life on June 5, 1921.Upon completing high school in Tillamook he joined the Army and became an Army police
officer. Upon Leaving the army, he was selected to become a Texas state trooper, Retiring in 2020. He is survived by his mother and father Mike and Kathy Hulburt, his sister Sally (Rob),Brother Thomas(Veronica), His wife Norma, four children: Carrie, Christopher, Jonas, and Devon,And his ex-wife Shay Reed. His funeral was held June 15, 2021 in El Paso Texas. At a later date, his ashes will be spread in Barview Oregon. This date will be announced on Facebook, When the date has been set. John Douglas Nerheim Sept. 26, 1949 - July 9, 2021

ohn Douglas Nerheim was born September 26th, 1949 to Gordon and Violet (Oster) Nerheim in Spokane, Washington. He passed away July 9th, 2021 in Rockaway Beach, Oregon. John grew up in Portland, OR and graduated from Lincoln High School. After graduation he joined the Army and served his country proudly for two years. After the Army, John started his career as a painter
at Freightliner where he worked for 33 years, retiring in 2005. Although retired, he never slowed down. John always had a very strong work ethic and instilled that into his children as well. John and Julia moved to Rockaway Beach where he loved taking his dog Jackson for walks on the beach. He enjoyed striking up conversations with anybody and everybody and especially loved spending time with his family. John also had a passion for classic cars and spent a lot of time restoring them. John is survived by his wife Julia of 43 years, daughter Kari Marks (Nicholas), sons; JJ Nerheim (Tiffany), Jared Nerheim (Tiffany Robinson), brother Mike Nerheim, sister Patricia Nerheim and four granddaughters; Dallas, Jasmine, Cierra and Alexis. B
eth Lorraine Gallusser passed away at her home on July 8th, 2021 surrounded by family. Beth’s life was cut short by cancer, and even though she was a tough, resilient woman, she was unable to win the battle with this challenging disease. Beth was preceded in death by her husband Marshall Gallusser 13 years prior as well as her dog Ebony in 2020. She is survived by her children Jennifer Armstrong and Megan Gallusser. She also leaves behind her son in law Scott Armstrong, 2 grandchildren, Silas and Quentin Armstrong, her mother June Porter, and many other family members and friends around the world. Beth was born and raised in the Tillamook County area where she still has many family members today. She met her husband in Sacramento California, and soon after they moved to Michigan to be closer to Marshall’s family. Once they decided to have children they could not pass up the opportunity to raise their children surrounded by the community and stability of the Oregon Coast. They moved back to Oregon in the late 70’s just before having their first baby, Jennifer in 1980. They lived in their home together for over 30 years raising 2 children as well as creating a stable loving environment for all other visitors. Anyone who came to Beth’s home was treated with the utmost kindness and love. Beth was a fantastic cook and hostess. She loved entertaining and could make a mean Tri- Tip on her Traeger BBQ. There was never a shortage of snacks and gourmet cheese, veggie, and fruit plates at Beth’s gatherings. She loved to be around the energy of people enjoying each other’s company, and would bend
over backwards to make sure everyone was well fed and their beverages were full. Beth spent the majority of her life in and around Nehalem, Oregon where she was a dedicated mother, wife, gardener and community member. She worked for over 20 years as a rural carrier for the postal service and upon retirement moved to Rhododendron Oregon to start a new chapter of her life in Timberline Rim. She bought a beautiful home in the Rim and transformed it into an amazing sanctuary within nature. Beth was quick to build community in and around her new home. She joined women’s groups, enjoyed walking and exercising with friends, and was involved in numerous community activities. She also became a consistent hydration station for local children who loved to stop in and grab a soda as they rode their bikes and scooters around the neighborhood with her grandchildren. Beth’s kind hearted personality had an immediate impact on those who were lucky enough to know her. She was a selfless individual who truly put others’ needs before her own. The impact she had on those who met her was evident as she was sent off to the spirit in the sky. There will be a Celebration of Life at the Pine Grove in Manzanita Oregon on Saturday, September 11th from 3 - 6 p.m. Please join us in celebrating her life with a potluck item or favorite beverage that reminds you of the time you spent with Beth. James Michael Brown May 8, 1931 - July 14, 2021

ames Michael Brown, 90, passed away peacefully in Ellensburg, WA on Wednesday July 14, 2021. Jim was born May 8, 1931 in Portland, Oregon to Dr. Hugh and Marie (Yunker) Brown. He was a long time resident of Beaverton, OR. Jim graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Tillamook and attended Gonzaga University. In 1955 Jim and Gilda (Richards) were married in Tillamook. With their young family they explored and camped throughout the West and made regular road trips to eastern Canada to visit Gilda’s family in Ontario. In later years they were intrepid travelers. Jim loved meeting people and easily made friends wherever he went. He had a unique instinct for engaging strangers in fun conversations that everyone enjoyed.
His 42 year career with The Oregonian newspaper began in the classified department and after a short break in the late 1950s to manage the Fern Café in Tillamook, he returned to The Oregonian and became the paper’s purchasing agent until he retired in 1996. He is survived by his son David Brown and wife Rhonda of Cle Elum, WA, daughter Sheilagh Brown and husband Dunham Gooding of Bellingham, WA, sister Mary Malone of Petaluma, CA, grandchildren James, Justin, Ashley, and Aeneas, and nine great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Gilda, and sons Hugh and Steven. Jim was an active member in the purchasing agent association, of which he was president twice, the Navy League, the Japan – America Society, the Elks Club, and the Order of the Antelope. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 AM on Monday, July 26 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Beaverton, OR. Hall: Due to the 4th of July holiday falling on a Monday, the July City Council meetings will be on Monday, the 12th at 5:30 PM and Tuesday, the 13th at 6:00 PM. If you think you might be interested in attending, you can find more information on the City’s website at ci.bay-city.or.us. Scroll down to “Calendar” to find dates, agenda, packets, and notice of meetings. The calendar is posted the Friday before city council around noon. The Public Works Committee will meet on Thursday, August 5th at 5:00 PM at City Hall. The agenda includes discussion of the Small City Allotment Street Grant and Tree Ordinance. There will also be an update on parks and a director’s update by Roy Markee. It is time to get serious about your emergency preparedness plans now that Fire Chief Darrel Griffith has sent out a notification that all debris burning will be banned on July 15, 2021. This includes open burning as well as barrels. Speaking of preparedness, an article by Holly Dillemuth of Jefferson Public Radio that appeared in the July 8th issue of the Oregonian tells the story of the resilience of Ruby Reid and her fiancé, Chris Day, who survived the Cutoff Fire in Klamath County last month but lost their 5-acre bee apiary. This was after losing their home and urban vegetable garden last fall in the Almeda Fire in the city of Talent. Ruby also lost all her possessions in an apartment fire when she was 19. She said that after the Almeda Fire, the unprecedented drought this year made them concerned, but “We knew that something like this could happen, and we were afraid it might, but we didn’t think it would again.” Her advice for facing another fire season is to be prepared and have your go-bag ready and paperwork you would need if you had to leave home and never come back. Good advice from someone who has been there! This is the perfect time to invite your neighbors in for a preparedness meeting (in our house we call it a party) to discuss ways to reduce risk from wildfire, prepare for an emergency, and to pass out information on what community resources are available during a crisis. And you can start by gathering friends and neighbors on July 17th at

The fun started Friday at 7:00 PM with an “intimate” concert with master jazz guitarist, John Stowell and jazz bassist, Bob Bowman. The concert was broadcast live on KAYN 92.9 FM. In other Arts Center news, teens from Tillamook County have collaborated with BCAC to create a wall mural in Griffin Park. You will want to stop by the park when you’re out and about and check the progress. What a wonderful gift they are creating for our community. I am reading two books from my son’s library. It is as large as the Bay City Library. They are all in storage waiting for his children to go through them and take them home. Some things just cannot be done right away when someone dies. I go regularly to get a book or two. It is comforting to me. I’m reading “Where they Stand,” The American Presidents in the Eyes of Voters and Historians” by Robert W. Merry. This voyage through our history provides a probing and provocative analysis of how presidential politics works, and how a country sets its course. Fascinating book. Just the kind of book lawyer Matt loved. The second book is “Mr. and Mrs. Madison’s War,” America’s First Couple and the Second War of Independence. I am a little further along in this story because I do not have to read and reread to understand what I am reading. Matt and I both loved libraries and books. We loved words. We loved how words come together in just the right way to create a wonderful story. The process of writing was fascinating to us. I am closing because I have used up my allotment of words. But before I do, I have so much I would like to tell you about Grandma Camp. But for now, I will convey it with these words: chaos, loud, food, singing, games, gifts, stories, laughter, more laughter, love, and more love. Theodore ‘Ted’ Paul Jacob June 17, 1932 - July 14, 2021
W
ith Alan Jackson’s rendition of “I’ll Fly Away” playing, our husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, Theodore Paul Jacob, took a final flight to his heavenly home early in the morning of July 14th, 2021, capping 89 years of a life well-lived. Among his family greeting him in heaven were his parents, Ted and Wilma Jacob; brother, Ken Jacob; in-laws, Cap and Loretta McCool; his beloved son, Dan Jacob; and darling granddaughter, Kristen Jacob. Carrying his spirit and legacy here on earth, Ted leaves behind the love of his life for 67 years, Linda Jacob, as well as his children: Cindy and Mike Gardner, Pete and Deniel Jacob, Brad and Gretchen Jacob, Becky and Rob Williams; Grandchildren: Natalie and Coby Rieger, Sam and Dani Gardner, Jentz Jacob, Lauren and John Bruene, Brenton and Brandy Jacob, Katelyn and Wil Roberts; and his great grandchildren: Chloe, Carsen and Callan Rieger, Sawyer and Hayden Gardner, Emma, Coy and Dale Bruene, Rafe Jacob and Ciara Roberts. Born June 17th, 1932, in his family’s home, Ted dearly loved this place he called home, always commenting after being away, how good it was to come home, which he did for 89 years to the same farm on Sollie Smith Road. Ted attended Tillamook schools as a youngster: Wilson Elementary, Tillamook Junior High and Tillamook High School, graduating in
1950. He attended Willamette University on a football scholarship his freshman year, transferring and graduating from Oregon State and Monmouth School of Education with a teaching degree in 1954. He fulfilled his ROTC commitment to the United States Air Force as a pilot and instructor. Once discharged, Ted and Linda returned to Tillamook to join his parents on the mink farm. To make ends meet, Ted milked cows before and after a full day of mink farming, but mink farming was his passion so sold the cows as soon as possible. Right away, Ted took leadership positions in the mink farming organizations serving as president of the local organization, the state organization, and then with the Seattle Fur Exchange. He also led Black Glama’s advertising effort responsible for spearheading the international marketing campaign that took Ted and Linda traveling world-wide engaging with furriers and buyers, educating them and encouraging them to buy the best fur in the world: American fur. For Ted, the best part of the mink business was the lifetime friendships cultivated with farmers and industry officials over the years. Ted loved the Lord and his local church, the First Christian Church, where he served as an elder, a Sunday School teacher, youth group leader, officiating at many weddings and funerals. His influence and teaching impacted many lives over the years. He led Miracle Sunday when tens of thousands of dollars were raised in one Sunday to complete the education wing of the church mortgage free. Another priority in Ted’s life was education in Tillamook. He served on District #9 School Board for two terms as well as the Budget Committee and was particularly pleased to have served when South Prairie School was built with a special fea
ture of the reading silo. Ted also took an active role in the Pioneer Association, leading, organizing and volunteering at the Pioneer Fair Booth as well as volunteering at the Pioneer Museum. In his spare time, he loved the outdoors and hunted deer and elk and was an avid fisherman in his younger days. You could always find a good book open beside his chair. Above all, Ted loved his family and family gatherings at holidays and birthdays. He was always interested in what each was doing, how school was going and what was his/ her future plan. He spent a lifetime engaging, encouraging and influencing family, friends and acquaintances doing his part to bring light to
this earth. He was the family patriarch, a Patriot, leader and support-no matter what. He persevered gallantly with dignity through life’s trials. Truly, his was a wonderful and blessed life well-lived. Godspeed, Ted Jacob. You are finally home. We will see you soon. A celebration of Ted’s life will be held July 24, (his mother’s birthday) 2021, at First Christian Church at 1PM. Reception to follow in the Fellowship Hall. If you would like to give a gift in memory of Ted, consider giving to First Christian Church, The Tillamook County Pioneer Museum or the Tillamook High School Alumni Fund.
