Tillamook County remains in Moderate Risk Vaccines open for ages 12 plus

Tillamook County had 41 new confirmed and presumptive cases from Sunday, April 25, through Saturday, May 8, Tillamook County Health Department relayed during a community update Tuesday, May 11. “Oregon is still seeing an increase
in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations,” Tillamook County Health Department Administrator Marlene Putman said. Putman said 15 counties shifted out of Extreme Risk last week and into High Risk. “The governor expects that counties will not return to the Extreme Risk category again hopefully for the duration of the pandemic,” Putman said. “This is as long as we continue to work together to decrease cases by following precautions.” Adventist Health Tillamook
President Eric Swanson reported 326 hospitalizations across Oregon, as of May 11. There were 794 ventilators available in the state of Oregon. “We have plenty of PPE here at Adventist Health Tillamook this morning,” Swanson said. Emergency Preparedness Coordinator Ed Colson said Moderna, Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson vaccines are available in the county. regon is now considered out of the fourth COVID-19 surge, Tillamook County Health Department reported during a Tillamook County Board of Commissioners meeting Wednesday, May 12. Administrator Marlene Putman said a new goal for the state is to reach 70 percent and for counties to reach 65 percent of
their adult populations to receive at least on dose of the vaccine, so the county can move into the state’s lower risk tier of virus restrictions. “Counties must also submit a comprehensive vaccine plan that addresses equity gaps prior to moving to that next level,” Putman said. “If we meet the goal, we have to [submit] the plan also.” For some counties, movement to that lower level may happen as early as Friday, May 21. Tillamook County, as of May 12, is at 57.9 percent of the population vaccinated with 7.1 percent more to go to reach the 65 percent goal. As of May 14, Tillamook County was at 58.2 percent of residents vaccinated with at
least one dose. “Even with this great decrease in our cases and vaccine availability, people are still getting sick with COVID,” Putman said. “If you’re feeling ill, stay home, confer with your health care provider or if you recognize those symptoms and want to be tested, testing is available at no cost.” The health department on Friday, May 14, reported 13 new COVID-19 cases. regon’s state health officer said Friday individuals and businesses have choices when it comes to protecting against COVID-19. “I think individuals have a choice which kind of protection they want to use,” said Dr. Dean Sidelinger, state epidemiologist, in a press conference. “Masks and physical distancing, or vaccination — and I hope more people choose vaccination, because it’s safe, it’s effective and it’s available across the state right now.” The doctor’s comments came the day after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention laid out new guidance for wearing face coverings, saying those who’ve been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 don’t need to wear masks or physically distance in many instances. Oregon Thursday adopted that guidance, allowing the fully vaccinated to unmask (with exceptions, like public transit, health care facilities and homeless shelters, where masks are still required). “We have the tools we’ve been using since last summer: keeping our distance, wearing our masks,” Sidelinger “Now we have some other amazing tools: We have three very safe and effective vaccines that people can choose to use.” But the federal and state announcements Thursday have left a lot of questions still to be answered — particularly for businesses where COVID-19 restrictions have faced the most complexity throughout the pandemic. Sidelinger said more clear guidance would be coming from the Oregon Health Authority, but that businesses also have the choice for how to keep their customers safe. They can’t choose to serve only vaccinated customers, but they can choose which set of measures to put in place, he said. “Businesses should have a plan to either keep the current guidance in place — where they require physical distancing and masking for everyone — or implement a plan where they’re checking the vaccination status of those who come in and that those individuals could be allowed to be in that business without wearing their masks and with less physical distancing,” Sidelinger said. The change doesn’t yet mean the state’s fourtier, capacity-limiting framework is going away. Those rules are in place at least until 70% of the state is vaccinated, and businesses still have to limit their capacity based on those rules in their county. But businesses can now choose to allow fully vaccinated customers to unmask if they verify their vaccination status. That adds yet another rule for businesses to keep track of. “We know that this puts put them into a different position, if they chose to implement a system where those who are (vaccinated) can come into the business without a mask and without physical distancing, it will require them to ask about vaccination status and check on that before they come in, and that’ll put some in a difficult position,” Sidelinger said. Sidelinger noted that voluntary disclosure of someone’s vaccination status isn’t a violation of privacy laws — but said the state is figuring out how that verification process should work. “As you can probably imagine, this is a radical shift in the CDC framework,” Sidelinger said.

estucca Valley School District Board of Directors discussed summer school and the upcoming school year during a board meeting Monday, May 10. Summer school will be six weeks long from July 6 through Aug. 12. “We have done half days,” Superintendent Misty Whar-
ton said. “This summer we are going to do full days.” Wharton said the summer school would not be called ‘school’ but science workshops and labs and art workshops. “We’ve partnered with Food Roots [and] the South County Emergency Volunteer Corps,” Wharton said. “Also Sitka Center for Art and Ecology will run the afternoon session, which is art, and they
will bring in professional artists.” The school district received more than $140,000 in a grant from Oregon Department of Education for the summer school, Wharton added. “We’re going after a $120,000 federal grant for the 21st Century After School Programs,” Wharton said. Wharton said Sitka Center is applying for a $50,000 grant from the Oregon Com-

munity Foundation. “We’ve broken the six weeks into two-week sessions,” Wharton said of trying to be flexible in scheduling for the teachers. “They can take a two-week session and then get a break.” The school district will also employ high school students as camp leaders, Wharton added. These students will receive an income. The major hurdle for the
summer benchmark, if people continue choosing to get vaccinated. As of Tuesday, right around 60% of the state’s adult population has received a dose of the vaccine. That’s about 430,000 more people who need to get first doses before the state reopens, according to Allen. The current rate of vaccination could get the state across the threshold easily by mid-June, Allen said. But health officials expect that rate of vaccinations to slow over the next several weeks: Most likely, the state’s vaccination rate will dip by about 10% and stay there, getting the state across the finish line the third week of June. The seven-in-10 figure doesn’t get the state to herd immunity, which would completely stifle the virus, but will significantly reduce hospitalizations and deaths, Allen said. “That’s really what we’re shooting for with this 70% statewide goal, is to get enough people vaccinated that while we’re still short of herd immunity, we’ve significantly driven down the worst outcomes of COVID-19,” Allen said. Allen noted some counties are already well on their way to loosening restrictions earlier than that under the lower-risk framework. Benton and Hood River counties, for example, have already vaccinated the 65% required to move those counties into lower-risk on May 21. Deschutes, Lincoln, Multnomah and Washington are on track to meet the May 21 timeline at their current rates, Allen said. Clackamas, Clatsop, Lane, Polk and Tillamook counties have all vaccinated at least 55% of their 16-and-older population, and should be able to loosen restrictions based on the vaccine metrics before the rest of the state, according to Allen. “These counties show that you can’t make assumptions about Oregonians, and every county can protect its residents by hitting a high vaccination rate, no matter its geographic location or partisan orientation,” Allen said. Still, those counties will be required to develop a vaccine equity plan before moving to the lower-risk category. Allen said that plan will consider how the county will improve disparities in who’s getting vaccinated, like outreach, language and accessibility support and plans for vaccinating hard-to-reach employee groups and the homeless. But restrictions will be even looser when the state hits that 70% rate. “Once we cross that statewide goal — yes, that means no more county risk levels and a lifting of most restrictions, including capacity limits for venues and businesses and limits on group sizes,” Brown said. “Common sense safety measures, like wearing masks and physical distancing, may remain in effect, in line with CDC guidance.” The governor said Tuesday she expects students to return to classrooms full-time in the fall — and that, with some modifications, organizers will likely be able to hold major events in the fall, like September’s Pendleton Roundup. “I would fully expect that we will be able to ‘let’er buck,’ so to speak, in September,” Brown said.

For the Herald One of Oregon’s longest running poetry journals is back and online. Fireweed: Poetry of Oregon has been highlighting the best of Oregon poetry for decades. The journal was dissolved for a period of years, but recently, Sydney Elliott, a former Fireweed editor and published poet, decided it was time to revive Fireweed on a digital platform and set out to reinstate Fireweed’s non-profit status. “I want to honor the legacy of Fireweed and Oregon poets. This platform not only will feature the best of current Oregon poetry, but the archived past print issues will serve as a time capsule for decades of poetry from all regions in the state,” said Elliott. Past print issues will be digitalized and available to the general public. The site will also feature the founders of the journal and a house a place for Oregon poets to submit their work to be considered for publication. Elliott notes, “One of the things that made Fireweed unique is that the editors would take the time to reply to submissions, even the rejections, with comments and feedback. I am hoping that we can bring that level of communication and community into each issue.” Fireweed plans to be a biannual publication with a Summer and Winter issue, with the first call for submissions open May 1—June 1, 2021. Elliott hopes to have regional readings in connection with each published issue. Elliott is excited to house the publication in Tillamook

hat might look like a nice spring day at the beach can be a dark, dangerous trek through the forest. On May 4, a 63-yearold woman was hiking on the trail from Cape Meares Lighthouse to Cape Meares beach when she slipped and broke her right lower leg. Some other hikers nearby called 911 for help. Netarts/Oceanside and Tillamook emergency personnel responded, including our local volunteer firefighters Mike Smith, Olli Ollikainen and Jonathon Hedden who assisted with the pack-out. The injured woman was carried out in a rescue basket (a basket mounted on one large, all-terrain wheel). The trail was very slick, narrow and overgrown, and jostling was inevitable. The poor woman was finally delivered to an ambulance waiting in the parking lot at Cape Meares Lighthouse; we hope she is doing well. Kudos to all of the first responders,

Motor Lifeboat. Documentation displayed with the boat notes it is a Dumas Model Kit S-200 (vintage 1975) of plank-on-frame construction with a remote-control range of approximately 80 yards. The boat on the second shelf, carefully assembled by Randy Klobas, is a slightly smaller Coast Guard cutter flying the traditional U.S. Coast Guard Ensign flag. The numbers on Randy’s boat are U.S. Coast Guard CG-36498. Looking that up online, I found out that the real boat was 36 feet long and used in the 1930s, generally with a three-man crew. This type of boat was phased out and replaced by the 44-foot motorboat. The last of the 36-foot boats was retired in 1987. So, between the two of them, Bill and Randy cover a lot of Coast Guard history. Their boats will be on display at the library through the rest of this month. Butch Freedman, Ciel

hanks to Doug Olson for word that he Pacific City – Nestucca Valley Chamber of Commerce is planning a professional fireworks display this year. Fireworks were cancelled in 2020 due to the Covid 19 pandemic. Preparations include a sign off by Nestucca Rural Fire Protection District Chief, Jim Oeder, and a contract with Western Fireworks Display. If the State of Oregon should restrict events including larger fireworks displays, the contractor will honor the contract for an additional 90 days. So we could have a “Back to School” or “End of Summer” show around Labor Day if it comes to that. The show will cost $13, 000, (the same price as 2019). Half of the cost is being covered by a generous contribution from the Nestucca Ridge companies including the Pelican Pub. That leaves an additional $3,250 to be raised before July 4. The Chamber has set a goal of $3,500 by July 1 to cover the balance of the contract and provide some cleanup and advertising. Our help is needed. Tillamook Farmers Market returns June 12 T
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Fines free - Wellintentioned but misguided The Tillamook Library’s new “Fines Free” policy – eliminating fines for overdue books – is well-intentioned but mistaken. The claim is that fines “intimidate” people and prevent them from using the library. But how intimidating can twentyfive cents be? “Fines Free” is a national movement promoted by big city libraries claiming that library fines are racist and discriminatory towards black people. Whether that is true or not elsewhere, less than one percent of Tillamook Library users are black, so it appears to be a solution in search of a problem. Racism does not happen at the Tillamook Library. I will personally donate $100 to the Tillamook Library Foundation if anyone shows discriminatory practices by any staff, volunteer, or board member. I suspect, but admittedly do not know, that the new policy is virtue-signaling, or perhaps just going along with what national library groups are promoting. But “Fines Free” isn’t free. loss of income means less
money for the library budget. Voters will remember that when asked to increase funding once again. There will be a cost in reduced availability of materials. Human nature being what it is, people will keep books longer. More books will be needed to maintain the same level of availability. Or you will have to wait longer because of someone else’s lack of consideration. Fear of fines is not a deterrent to using libraries, anywhere. What the policy really intends to do is remove the threat of losing library privileges, which happens if you rack up fines and don’t pay. This threat of lost privileges motivates people to follow the rules. Refuse to pay parking and speeding tickets and you lose your driving privileges. Should we get rid of those fines? People who repeatedly break rules don’t deserve the privilege. If you refuse to obey the library’s modest rules – meant to benefit everyone – then you don’t deserve the privilege of using the library. A library can teach children individual responsibility and the consequences of not obeying rules. What is the message of “Fines Free”? Just ignore the
rules about returning books on time Johnny, rules don’t matter and there are no consequences to breaking them. Fines and penalties serve a legitimate purpose. Should we abolish fines for not paying to use county recreational facilities? For not paying taxes, credit card or utility bills on time? Why not declare everything “Fines Free”? Fines Free is a national movement that may have purpose elsewhere, but only negative consequences in Tillamook County. It rewards bad behavior at the expense of the vast majority of patrons who do follow the rules. Decisions should be based on what is right locally, not on what trendy national policies might be the flavor of the day. Doubtless they meant the best, but the Library’s Board of Directors should reconsider this ill-advised decision. he return of longer, warmer days can only mean one thing: It is almost farmers market season. The Tillamook Farmers Market will return for its 21st season on June 12 and run through Sept. 24. As always, you will find the market on the corner of Laurel Avenue and Second Street from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday. While many of our COVID-19 restrictions from last year will still be in place, we will slowly (and safely) be phasing in some of our regularly scheduled programming. We have received confirmation from the Oregon Farmers Market Association that we can bring back live music, and I am working on scheduling some of our local, talented musicians for the months of July and August when the weather is particularly nice, and everyone can properly spread out. We will also be bringing back our SNAP service and Double Up Food Bucks incentive program. If you or anyone in your household has an Oregon Trail Card, they can come to the Farmers Market HQ trailer, and we

his column is dedicated to everyone who thinks people who work in the library sit around and read all day. Believe it or not, when we interview prospective employees for job openings, we often have to stifle our laughter when an eager candidate says they really want to work at the library so they can catch up on their reading. I kid you not. So here is what goes on during a normal day at the North Tillamook Library in Manzanita. Valerie and Breeze arrive at 11:30 AM to prepare for the noon opening. The first thing that needs to be done is to empty the outdoor book drop. You probably have noticed how large the book drop is, right? Can you believe that there are days, especially after

a busy weekend, when that book drop is nearly filled up to the top? All of those items must be brought in to the library and checked in. One important step is to check all the DVD cases to be sure the right DVD is in the correct case...AND make sure the DVD is not still sitting inside your DVD player at home! You would not believe how often we get movie cases back empty. You can expect a phone call from us if this easy-to-do mistake happens to you. Another priority is to get the daily “send list” off the computer. The send list is a printout of items that are on the shelves at Manzanita that have been requested at other locations. We need to get those pulled off the shelves and into the transit bins before the Monday-WednesdayFriday courier arrives to pick them up. After shelving any leftover materials from yesterday and getting the messages off the answering machine, we notice a line is beginning to form outside the front door. It must be noon. There is always an initial rush of patrons who stop in early to get their reading material. Between helping these patrons and answering the many early phone calls, Valerie and Breeze have their hands quite full! Some of the many phone calls we receive ask lots of the same questions. Where can I send a FAX in town? Are you open? Do you take donations? Can you find a phone number for me? The
Berry Patch Girls, MC Family Farms (the one with all the beautiful flowers), Mountains to Rivers Ranch, and Fawcett Creek Farms will all be back this year, as well. You also will find Oregon Coast Honey, Three Sisters Kettle Corn, Pacific Roots Coffee, Nestucca Bay Creamery, Sweet Treats by George, Bewley Creek Woodworking and many of your other favorite vendors returning this year, as well as plenty of new faces to come check out. We are also planning another seafood stock up event toward the end of the season, when you can find fresh, canned and frozen tuna and other locally sourced seafood to stock up on before summer ends. If you were hoping to get in as a vendor, you may have noticed that our online application has closed, but we are still taking your information in case there is an opening. Because we are still spacing vendors six feet apart, we are limited on the number of booths we can accommodate. But you can always count on a helping of tricky questions that can result in quite a bit of research to come up with an answer. Between checking items out for patrons, checking in and shelving the continuous onslaught of new returns, as well as placing holds for people, staff members also help patrons get hooked up to WiFi, set up an account for our online streaming services, catalog the new magazines that just arrived...and the list goes on and on. Hopefully, things are relatively under control for the mid-afternoon crush that results from the courier drop-off which brings hundreds of requested books and DVDs that have been pulled from other libraries and sent to Manzanita. If nothing throws us off course too much, staff locks the door at 5:00 pm and spends the next half hour picking up the pieces before going home for the day. If all this sounds intense, just picture what it was like before COVID when we also had frequent programs like storytimes, computer and craft classes, ukulele jams and other meetings to deal with. I have been working at the Manzanita branch in the past (before COVID) when there have been more than 25 people inside the Manzanita Library at one time, either reading, working, using our WiFi, or just hanging out. We long to get back to those days, despite the extra work load. The process described above happens at each of our libraries every day! And you may have noticed one thing that is noticeably absent from the list of duties...time to sit down and read books! If we have enough energy at the end of the day, we bring a good book home to read.

other’s Day was fabulous. I hope yours was good. Amber visited us for the weekend and we ate, sang and played ukulele, and even went to a few garage sales. It was a wonderful visit and I even shed a tear or two when she left. Some people say Mother’s Day is over rated, that it is a ‘Hallmark’ holiday, but I say it is a special day made especially for moms. Dale went fishing on Monday after Mother’s Day with a good friend. They went to Odell Lake, and it was a good fishing day. Dale caught a 19” 15lb kokanee. Like the good fisherman they are, they took pictures, then released the
little guy. Dale was beaming. He loves fishing! Pat Patterson accidentally called me the other day. He is still actively trying to get folks interested in revitalizing Lumberman’s Park in Garibaldi. Being the daughter of a railroad man, I hope he succeeds. Railroading was an integral part of the beginning of Tillamook County, especially Rockaway Beach. As a child, my dad spent lots of time working on derailments in Tillamook County. I never did ask him about them, but when he came home after a week of work, he was so tired. We just let him sleep. There was a house fire up above Lake Lytle on the
corner of Smith and Charlotte Street. It was Gary and Heidi Stevenson’s house, and many of you may know Heidi if you get your dogs groomed. She is the owner of Pampered Pets. Gary and Heidi’s home burned completely and Gary was burned, while successfully saving their animals, and then life lighted to Portland. Zandra keeps me updated on the “Built-It” with a Lion event, so I will pass that knowledge on to you. This event gives children, four years of age and older, the wonderful opportunity to build a seed planter with Lion Club folks over Zoom. The kits are free and will be available just before the Zoom meeting at our Lions Club at 286 South Anchor St (behind city hall), on Friday, March 21st from 5-7pm. The Zoom meeting is on Saturday, May 22nd at 10am on Zoom. The Zoom link will be in the kits they receive on Friday, as will be all the instructions. Have fun kids! That’s coming up in a few days. Last week the craziest
thing I have heard about happened right here in Rockaway Beach! What the heck? At 10:45am the RB Police Department, who are heroes, were notified about a suspicious item on North Miller Street. It was found between North 5th and 6th Avenues. The smart folks that found it thought it may be an explosive and called it in. (Thank goodness.) When the officer arrived, he thought it looked like a fireworks that had been modified to make a larger explosion than intended by the manufacturer. Our Public Works employees barricaded the area off and the Oregon State Police were called. It was then determined it was not safe to move so the area remained blocked off until the explosive unit arrived. Okay folks, this is CRAZY! But thank goodness for all involved to keep our community safe. Should you come

T-Mobile has a new promotion that if you turn in an old phone, of which I have many, you get a new 5G phone. It is similar to what I had, but unfortunately in moving stuff from my old phone to my new phone, I accidentally closed my Evernote App. It had several thousand ukulele songs on it and I am sick about it. I have reached out to them for help, but so far, nothing. Other than that, I do like my new phone, and the price was perfect. She also discovered Madelines in downtown Tillamook, and so far that’s been a “first stop” shopping favorite. I have great things planned for Karen’s next visit that involve a lot of talking and shopping with a few of my other friends who want to meet Karen. With all of our vaccinations completed, we spent a pleasant evening with Barb and Mike Brown. Mike, who just returned from a successful turkey hunt in southern Oregon, is a fisher, craber and clamer extraordinare. I will be getting some fishing reports from him to share with you in the near future. Fire season is upon us and the Preparedness Committee has kicked their action plan into high gear. They have mailed every resident in Bay City a tri-fold pamphlet that includes important information on evacuation sites, disaster plans, emergency supply list, and list of contents for a “to go bag”. For more extensive information, preparedness packets are available at City Hall and the Bay City Fire Dept. You can
also find more information at redcross.org/cascades. The next “Be Prepared” meetings are Wednesday, June 2nd and Wednesday, July 7th. Both start at 6:00 PM at City Hall, so mark your calendars now. When citizens are well prepared it lowers the risk of the chaos that often comes with any major emergency or disaster. Speaking about preparedness, Kin and I participated in a ZOOM meeting with home owners from “The Capes” and Oceanside who have formed a committee to improve the preparedness of residents of their communities. It gave all of us a chance to share what we have learned, and to consider how our communities might assist each other in becoming better prepared. Well, Planning Commission members, you have a free night because the Bay City Planning Commission meeting scheduled for May 19th has been cancelled; but mark your calendars for the next meeting which will be on June 16th at 6:00 PM. Last fall we saw some big winds that blew down trees all over Tillamook County and beyond. The Tillamook Public Library got very creative when they were left with a huge tree that came down on the South Tillamook Public Library grounds. The Library Club used the wood to make beautiful benches and cut up wood to sell as a fundraiser. Hats off to the volunteers of the Library Club.
The Bay City United Methodist Church Grub Club is asking for volunteers to help make and deliver lunches to children this summer during the period of June 24th through August 27th. In the Sunday, May 9th edition of the Oregonian there was a commentary titled “A boy, the librarian and the storyteller” by Tom Hallman Jr. It is too long to share the whole article in the Fencepost, but it starts with his experience in high school. He was neither athletic or popular, and the library “was a socially safe place for misfits”. The story centers around an incident with the librarian that changed his life. She showed him kindness, humanity and understanding in a moment of need. This librarian was his hero. He adds “It serves as a reminder that students don’t always learn the most valuable lessons in a classroom”. The boy has gone on to become a highly respected journalist, winning many local and national awards. I’m ending the Fencepost today with an old joke from our favorite outdoor writer, Henry Miller of the Statesman Journal,. Notice posted on a utility pole: Lost dog. reetings Bay City! I am happy to report that I am no longer the “One-eyed Bandit”. Both cataract procedures went well, and I am now seeing much better; and for some reason my hearing is also greatly improved. But I cannot continue with today’s post without thanking my friend, and Bay City’s mayor, David McCall. Being the mayor is a huge responsibility and can be as time consuming as your own employment, but it never has stopped David from going where needed. Thank you David for stepping in for me. While home recuperating I was able to enjoy the company of friends and family. Usually when I have too much time on my hands I tend to get into a little trouble, and of course its more fun when you have “a partner in crime”. No one does that better than the “hoot and a half” Karen Shea. How we met is another story for another time. She was here at the end of April, before my eye procedure,
New collections manager starts at Tillamook County Pioneer Museum Tillamook County Pioneer Museum welcomes another member to its staff, Peyton Tracy, who will serve as the museum’s assistant director and collections manager. “I’m beyond thrilled to be returning to Oregon and joining such an exciting organization,” Tracy said. “The wealth of history held within the collections is impressive and important, and the dedication of both the staff here at TCPM and the community for this institution is infectious! Both are tremendous strengths of this organization that I’m both deeply grateful for and hope to encourage. I’m honored to be able to join and serve this community and act as a steward for its history.” Tracy, 28, graduated from Willamette University with a Bachelors of Arts in history, specializing in western history. Afterwards, she moved to central New York to earn her Masters in Museum Studies from the Cooperstown Graduate Program at SUNY Oneonta, one of the oldest programs of its kind in the nation. She began her career as the registrar at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum and spent three years there, bookending her experience with the 2016 induction of Ken Griffey Jr. and the 2019 Edgar Martinez—both Seattle Mariners she grew up watching play in her hometown. She then transitioned into a part-time
project manager position for a museum-consulting firm, Frank and Glory. In her new role in Tillamook, Tracy hopes to continue the hard work of past museum staff and provide ongoing care and management of the vast collection held at the museum. She is also particularly excited to continue to preserve this community’s history by improving access to the collections here. “My favorite part of working in museums is seeing a visitor connect with something in our exhibits or in our collection. I love hearing why an object or photo means something to them and hearing their stories, which I think are just as important as the stories held within the artifacts. I hope to give folks more opportunities to find those connections at the Tillamook County Pioneer Museum.” Tracy can be reached by

OBITUARIES Barbara Jean Brehm April 27, 1940 - May 8, 2021

arbara Jean Brehm, 81, of Ellensburg, passed away on Saturday, May 8, 2021 at the Prestige PostAcute Care & Rehab Center in Ellensburg. A memorial service was held last weekend at Johnston & Williams Funeral Home in Ellensburg. Barbara was born on April 27, 1940 in Madera, California to Milfred & Florence (Miller) Frazel. Her early years were spent in California before the family moved to the Tri-Cities where her father began work on some federal infrastructure projects around the region. Following graduation from high school, Barbara married Jim Yarbrough and they continued to make their home in Prosser. That marriage later ended in divorce. In the early 1980’s, Barbara met Bill Brehm at a “Parents Without Partners” dance and the two hit it off, marrying in 1984. They lived in Richland before retiring to Cannon Beach, Oregon in the early 2000’s where she served as a Deacon at the local Presbyterian Church. In 2014, Bill and Barbara moved to Ellensburg to be closer to their children as it was a good halfway point between Prosser and Issaquah. Barbara was a renaissance woman throughout her career,
working as a bank teller, real estate agent, travel agent and owning Mrs. Gulliver’s Travels, a miniatures and consignment store. She was a very avid yard/garage/estate sale attendee and she and Bill also volunteered countless hours with local community theatre groups. Barbara was also an avid crafter including painting and mosaic work. Barbara is survived by her husband, Bill, at their home in Ellensburg; children Laura (Brian) Edwards of Prosser, Amy (Craig) Rosenkranz of Issaquah, Heather Brehm of Buckley and Lariss (Anthony) Fitzpatrick of Ellensburg; grandchildren Amber (Kenneth) Hendershot, Jaimie (Nick) Hernandez, James Timberook, Charlie (Amy Mae Edwards, Desiree Theisen, Tanner Theisen, Emily Hunter, Katie Hunter, Sam Rosenkranz, Christian Theisen, and Ella Rosenkranz as well as numerous greatgrandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends. Her sister Eddie (Bill) Barem of Oregon and brother Mike Frazel of Montana also survive. In addition to her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by her daughter Bonnie Theisen; great-grandson Andrew; sister Geraldine Lee and brother Byron Frazel, Jr. Memorial contributions in Barbara’s honor are suggested to the Seattle Children’s Hospital, c/o Seattle Children’s Foundation, M/S 818-F, PO Box 5371, Seattle, WA 98145 Johnston & Williams Funeral Home and Crematory of Ellensburg has been entrusted with caring for Barbara’s family. Dorene Louise Dunlap (Horn) Sept. 4, 1937 - April 26, 2021

orene Louise Dunlap passed away Monday April 26th, 2021 of complications of a brain bleed. She was kept comfortable in the Sacred Heart Hospital in Springfield, OR. She passed with her grandson by her side holding her hand. She graduated in 1959 from Lewis and Clark College in Portland, OR. She received a Bachelor’s in music education. She loved music and theater. She taught for the majority of her career. A Choir director for Cannon Beach chorus, musical director for Coastal Theater, active in community theater her whole life. A music teacher for Nehalem School District, English teacher in Hillsboro at Brown Junior High. Performed in person at the Vatican for the Pope. A Founder and member of vocal performance group Vox Eclectique. Beloved church pianist for decades.
She had an early vision of professional public performance but chose to embrace family life loving her children and family to the fullest extent. She was a woman who truly loved love. She loved to travel and see the world, always bringing back a token of her travels and a story. She had a true gift for teaching and making you understand things. She was a beautiful bright light that touched so many lives. She loved the West Coast and lived in Manzanita for more than 20 years of her life. She ended up in Roseburg, OR for the last year and a half of her life to be closer to her grandson and his family. She is survived by her brother, Larry Dunlap, sons Jeff and Brian Horn, 4 grandchildren, Rachel Yates (Horn) Lauren Marr (Horn) Annalina Horn, Jacob Horn. 6 great grandchildren.

ark Steven Anderson of Bay City passed away at the age of 73 from cancer at his home surrounded by his family. Mark was born in Portland, Oregon to Dr. E. Dean Anderson and Betty E. Anderson. After grauduating from Lincoln High School in 1965 Mark joined the US Marine Corps and proudly served two tours in Vietnam. When Mark returned home from the war, he met and married the love of his life and wife of 50 years, Beverly Anderson. Together they raised two children, Christan and Leslie
Anderson in Portland where Mark worked in sales in the growing motorcycle industry until they moved to Bay City in 1996. Mark enjoyed living at the Oregon Coast, spending time outdoors fishing, crabbing and clamming. He loved animals and enjoyed walking his dog on the beach. He was an active volunteer in the community for the Tillamook Elk’s Lodge helping to complete the RV Park, and the Tillamook Anglers/Whiskey Creek Fish Hatchery. Mark had a loveable personality, he will be missed by his many friends and family. Mark is survived by his wife, Beverly Anderson of Bay City, his son, Christan Anderson and daughter-inlaw Irina Anderson of Bay City, his daughter, Leslie Anderson of Canby, his grandson Clarence Anderson of Garibaldi, and his sister, Gail Anderson residing in Kona, Hawaii. Mark did not want a service upon his death, he wanted to be remembered by his family and friends as they last saw him.

teven Jay Everett passed away on April 1,2021 in Tillamook Oregon at the Age of 70. Steve was born on April 3, 1950 in Tillamook Oregon to Jess an Sara (Lamar) Everett. Steve graduated from Tillamook High school and joined the Marines shortly after from 1969-1975. Afterwards he worked until retirement for various logging companies in Tillamook county. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and spending time with is family. Steve his survived by his daughters Jessica Minisce and husband Jared of Bend and Deana Everett of the The Dallas. His four grandchildren Bailey Everett, Taylor Minisce, Ryder Minisce and Brody Weichal. His sister Janice Luoto of Tillamook, and Nieces Marcy Manning, Sara Thurston and Sierra Scholerman.

ack L. Graves was born in Sheridan, OR July 3, 1934 to Roy O. and Ella M. Graves. His parents lived in the logging camp in Elsie, OR from 1937 to 1943 where his father was a timber faller. In 1943 the family moved to Garibaldi where Jack attended grade school and high school. In 1956 Jack graduated from Oregon College of Education
with a B.S. degree in secondary education. He spent most of his career teaching at Camp Tillamook where he was head teacher, coach, librarian and “Jack” of all trades. He retired after 31 years there, with a few teaching stints after retirement. Jack was a Garibaldi Port Commissioner for 17 years, a Tillamook County Transportation District Board member and a scout leader for 25 years, co-leading a trip to the Philmont Scout Ranch and staffing at Camp Cooper. He was also a member of the Lions club from 1965 – 2017. He wrote several books including “Now Never Lasts: Stories of Garibaldi”. Most proudly he was the husband of Frances, step-father of Frank Hatt and Karen Hatt-Mitler, father of Joshua K. Graves and grandfather of Billy, Jennifer, Georgie and Mackenzie.

nn Lee (Bailey) Dooher died on Sunday, May 9th, 2021 - Mothers Day - in Tillamook, Oregon after a short illness. Ann Lee was born on August 30, 1930, in Portland, Oregon. She was the daughter of Thomas H. Bailey and Helen J. Bailey, late of Tillamook. Ann Lee arrived in Tillamook with her parents in 1944, having spent her childhood in Hillsboro, Oregon. Her dad, an entrepreneur, purchased Tillamook Motor Company in 1943 and made Tillamook, along with her two brothers, their permanent home. Ann Lee attended Liberty School and Tillamook High school, and graduated from St. Helen’s Hall in Portland in 1949. In those early years, she has been described variously as pretty, vivacious, and mischievous. She loved a party, and always looked for an opportunity to sing or dance. She attended Lewis and Clark College in Portland where she met Tony Dooher, who was attending the University of Portland. After a short courtship they were married at

Ann Lee (Bailey) Dooher August 30, 1930 - May 9, 2021 Sacred Heart Church in Tillamook on May 12, 1951. After Tony’s service as a Marine in Southern California, Ann Lee and Tony returned to Tillamook to raise their family. Ann Lee and Tony welcomed five children in quick order and became active in their little town. Ann Lee was a past member of the Monday Musical club, A Catholic Daughter, various bridge clubs and choirs as well as an enthusiastic member of the Neah Kah Nie dance club. Dressing up and going out a few times a year to dance and mingle and have a drink or two with friends was Ann Lee’s favorite thing to do. Ann Lee was comically vain and fussy about how she looked and never went out without lipstick or a quick glance at a mirror. Always friendly, social and ready for a party, Ann Lee is fondly remembered as everyone’s friend. Her sunny personality and positive demeanor endeared her to just about everyone she met. A kind word, a smile and never one to cast doubt or gossip, Ann Lee saw the best in everyone. She had firm beliefs about proper deportment, and insisted on high standards of decency, manners and respect from her children. Her first question when you entered her house was, “how about something to eat?” It didn’t matter what the answer was, she went right away to make a snack, or an entire meal. No one walked away from her house hungry. Ann Lee and Tony considered their family their most important work. All the kids went to Sacred Heart Acad-
emy, and either Tillamook Catholic High School or Tillamook High School. Ann Lee always took a keen interest in her children’s schooling. She was watchful of grades and activities to make sure that everything was in balance. If grades suffered for too many outside activities, they were curtailed until the grades came back up. Ann Lee made sure the family attended Mass every Sunday, on time. Disrespectful behavior, or unkind action or words was just about the worst infraction of her list of infractions and earned a vigorous and instant response. An arched eyebrow and quick step in your general direction would indicate lights were about to go out. Music was always playing in the Dooher house. A radio, or the stereo, were always on full blast, with mom singing along. We became very familiar with all the old standards and singers. Of course, everyone had to shush when Sinatra came on. She loved to travel and made it to Europe and to her favorite place, Hawaii, many times. But just a short trip to the valley to see a show or visit her grandchildren also counted as an adventure. Ann Lee has been described as courageous, endearing, funny, and a best friend. She endured any hardship with stoic good nature and seldom allowed for any negative introspection. If something in her life was difficult or unhappy, she kept it to herself. She didn’t see the point in talking about it. Old friends as well as new, sought her out for her unwavering loyalty
and friendliness. She was always busy at something, exercised daily and often shared her favorite motto, “the less you do, the less you do” the message being, get up and move: Ann Lee couldn’t just sit – she had to be busy. Ann Lee is survived by her five children, Stephen (Bunny), of Newport, Tom (Chris), of San Francisco, Joan Boquist (Terry), of Tillamook, Sean (Judy), of Tillamook, and Joseph (Michelle), of Tillamook. In addition, she is grandma to 10 grandchildren and Gigi to 14 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother Ron Bailey of Portland, and Brian Bailey of Milwaukie and many loving nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her husband, Anthony (Tony) J. Dooher and her Parents. A Mass of remembrance will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church in Tillamook post Covid 19 restrictions. She will be buried at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Tillamook. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association or your favorite charity. The family would like to especially thank the good people at 5 Rivers assisted living community, in Tillamook, Griffin House assisted living in Tillamook, and Lakeview Memory Care, In Lincoln City, as well as the caring staff at Tillamook County General hospital. Although blessed with a good, full life, she will be sadly missed, but lovingly remembered. See ya later Kiddie.
