Tillamook County stays in Moderate Risk through May 13 T

illamook County remains in Moderate Risk, effective Friday, May 7, through Thursday, May 13, Tillamook County Health Department reported Tuesday, May 4, during a community update. Risk level status updates will be announced Tuesday, May 11. “Tillamook County had 43 new

confirmed positive and presumptive cases between April 18 and May 1,” Administrator Marlene Putman said. Putman said 30 people have been hospitalized with COVID-19, to date. The health center continues to provide medical and behavioral health services. “We continue to offer testing,” Putman said. “You can call to schedule an appointment.” Schedule a COVID-19 test by

calling 503-842-3900. You can also schedule a vaccine with your health care provider by calling the COVID-19 vaccine line at 503-842-3914. Adventist Health Tillamook President Eric Swanson said 351 patients are hospitalized with COVID-19 across Oregon. There are 806 ventilators available in the state, as of May 4. “We have Moderna, Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson, which are

available at our Tillamook County vaccine provider sites,” Emergency Preparedness Coordinator Ed Colson said. “When scheduling online, the clinic will include the vaccine time and minimum age required for the clinic.” Pfizer remains the only vaccine authorized for 16 and 17 year olds. As of May 3, 46 percent of Tillamook County residents have received one dose. No health insur-

he Tillamook County Dairy Women are excited to be holding the 2021 Tillamook County Dairy Princess-Ambassador contest on Sunday, May 16. Two qualified girls running for the title this year. 2019 Tillamook County Dairy PrincessAmbassador, Araya Wilks, will pass the crown to the newly elected princess and officially retire, as there was not a county dairy princess in 2020 due to the pandemic. To qualify to be a part of the program the candidate must have dairy experience by living or working on a dairy or dairy related field, participating in 4H/FFA in a dairy project or by being a part of a dairy or dairy products judging team. Allison Dixson and Mariana Llamas, both Tillamook High School seniors, will be vying for this year’s title. The contestants submitted a written cover letter and application outlining their qualifications and achievements. They will also

be participating in an interview with the 3 judge panel, presenting a prepared speech related to the dairy industry and presenting a 60 second television commercial promoting dairy products to the audience.

Allison Dixson Dixson is the daughter of James and Chrissy Dixson. Allison was a member of the FFA dairy judging team that represented Oregon at the national contest in 2018. “Having the opportunity to compete in Dairy Evaluation at the National FFA Conventions was extremely challenging for me but it also taught me that I am stronger than I let myself see,” Dixson wrote in her application. “I would consider that experience to be one of my greatest accomplishments. While my experience in the industry is somewhat limited, my passion is anything but,” Dixson said.

Dixson has been heavily involved in 4-H and FFA and has held leadership positions and received high awards in both organizations. She is an avid archer and has placed in national contests. Additionally, Allison has assisted with canned food drives, blood donation drives, the Odd Fellows pumpkin patch for kids, the Paw-It-Forward pet supply drive, wrestling statistician and the Tillamook High School Charity Drive. She is planning on attending Montana State University to major in animal sciences and agriculture business management. She is accepted into the MSU Honor’s College and looks forward to working in an agriculturally related field. Allison is excited to have the opportunity to represent and advocate the dairy industry and to see the doors this program may open for her personally.

This includes Clackamas, Columbia, Multnomah, and more. Tillamook remains in Moderate Risk. “Those 15 counties on Friday are going to move to High Risk,” Emergency Preparedness Coordinator Ed Colson said. “That puts a total of 24 counties at High Risk, four at Moderate Risk, and eight at Lower Risk.” The health department asks everyone to continue to wear a mask properly over your face and nose and asks all those who can get vaccinated and are 16 and older to schedule a vaccine online. Colson said all three vaccines available – Moderna, Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson – are available at all vaccine provider sites. Vaccine clinics are planned each week. Pfizer is still the only vaccine able to be given to 16 and 17 year olds. “As of May 3, we have 12,155 people in the county have received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine,” Colson said. “That’s 46 percent of the county population.” Thirty-two percent of Tillamook County residents are considered fully vaccinated, Colson added. Vaccines are now available through primary care providers. Tillamook City Council freezes enforcement of sewer lateral inspections for next 90 days Hilary Dorsey Staff Writer

illamook City Council approved a 90-day freeze on enforcement of sewer lateral inspections for realtors to provide education to their clients during a council meeting Monday, May 3. The ordinance, passed in December 2020, requires a sewer lateral inspection prior to the close

of escrow upon a sale or transfer of a house or property, the installation of additional plumbing facilities that produce an increase in sewage flow from the house, when a sanitary sewer overflow occurs, etc. Once city staff reviews the testing results of the inspection, the city will issue the property owner a Certificate of Compliance. This certificate states the building sewer lateral serving the property is properly working, structurally sound and meets the service conditions of the city. Realtor Adam Schwend addressed the ordinance during the citizen’s hearing portion of the meeting. “One of the things we all know is we have a housing affordability issue,” Schwend said. “Those folks who have just moved to the area or

renting, they have nowhere to go with those starter homes. People aren’t moving.” When you have a point of sale mandate, if that sewer line fails, Schwend said, the property owner has to dig up the street, as many of the laterals are in the middle of the street, in the middle of an escrow. “Our city is of the age to where a good deal of our sewer system is approaching 100 years old,” Councilor Doug Henson said. Councilor Rebekah Hopkins said realtors should have been spoken to before the ordinance was passed, or shortly after. She said she thinks the best time to find the issues is during negotiations. “If an inspection is done and it finds a serious problem, I think it’s a

good thing for the buyer to be aware of that,” Hopkins said. “A standard home inspection does not include an inspection of the laterals.” Hopkins said the person who can least afford to fix the laterals is likely the buyer, who took out a home loan, and it does not seem to be too big of a burden on the seller to do an inspection. “It may be that the seller can’t afford to do the work but the buyer is willing to take it on and a month on down the road, fix the problem,” Schwend said. “What I would ask is to give us the opportunity to negotiate that properly.” Councilor Brian Reynolds agreed the best time to fix a sewer lateral issue is during the point of sale. He added this has been successful

in other cities. These cities were reached out to before the resolution was passed. City Manager Nathan George said the inspections are very common in Oregon and throughout the United States. “We’re looking at protecting consumers, we’re looking at protecting our sewer system and upgrading long term,” Reynolds said. The council said other cities were reached out to before the ordinance was passed. Charity Drive 2021: ‘One Goal’ one for the books Although it looked a little different this year, Charity Drive went forward April 16 - 26 and it was a success according to organizers. In total all classes’ combined efforts brought in $81,760.620, which will all go toward local entities in need this year. Due to all the COVID restrictions organizers knew Charity Drive 2021 had to look different. No nightly dinners and a lot of yearly events they were unable to host. “We made the best of it

athy and Kevin Burke came upon a couple of harsh, if not uncommon, examples of nature at work recently. A four-foot shark was flopping about on the beach; seagulls had already started pecking at him. Just a few days after that, they found a longnose lancetfish; it was fast becoming eagle food. Both finds are unusual for our beach. The longnose lancetfish has large eyes, a clue that it lives at a significant depth during daylight, and it comes up closer to the surface at night to prey on salmon and other fish. This fish is also

characterized by a long, high dorsal fin and sharply pointed teeth. Death for both fish but sustenance for the birds. The sun shone brightly, but the air was cold, with fog hanging around in wisps above the blue bay—YES, we’re back salmon fishing! Captain Pete and I got in one scouting trip in April, although the heart of the spring Chinook season is really May-June. We weren’t the lucky ones that day. The honor of the first hatchery springer caught this year in the Memaloose Pool goes to (drumroll) Tony Papadopoli.

Congrats and good eating to the Papadopolis and their buddies! An interesting note about Tillamook Bay: Just about every day, you’ll see a small motorboat zipping across the water at high speed. would love it if I could convince the publisher of the Headlight Herald to print this particular column in big, bold, red letters, because this week, I get to share some really amazing news! The Tillamook County Library is now officially “fine free”! What does that mean? It means no more overdue fees for library materials not returned on time! Can you believe it? You probably have a lot of questions, so allow me to explain. Most people are aware that libraries have traditionally charged overdue fines. The idea behind adding fines was to encourage people to return their library checkouts on time. These charges were commonly calculated on a “per item, per day” basis. Some people call them late fees or a past due fines. But we can now call them a thing of the past! Why? The library board and management realized for some patrons, fines were a financial hardship, and sometimes it was just plain embarrassing to have fines on your library card. The board

The only requirement for a business to receive PPE through this program is that it qualifies as a “small business” under state definitions. That means any local business with 500 or fewer employees can call the Chamber to order PPE at no-cost to their business. You don’t even need to be a Chamber member, (though we recommend joining, because members also get the added benefit of reminder emails and regular updates explaining state data and guidelines as they change). So far, we’ve distributed well over 200 orders to local businesses all across Tillamook County. Orders have gone to businesses as far north as Manzanita and as far south as Neskowin. (We’ve

he Chamber recently received a third shipment of Personal Protective Equipment from Business Oregon, and with our inhouse storage space stocked with masks, gloves, and sanitizer, it feels like a good time to recap the free PPE program we’ve been helping manage. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the state’s economic development agency Business Oregon has provided Chambers like ours with PPE to distribute at no cost to local small businesses. The shipments include a wide variety of supplies, including face masks, gloves, hand sanitizer, no-touch hand sanitizer dispensers, sanitizer wipes and spray, and thermometers. Pretty much anything a business might need to follow state guidelines. The program saves money for businesses, who don’t have to personally incur the expense of buying PPE. In Tillamook County the program has provided more than $100,000 worth of PPE.

The most recent bunch of supplies should be the last full shipment we will receive from Business Oregon, though we expect to get a special restock of hand sanitizer refills for the no-touch dispensers later that should last through the end of the year. We distribute on a first come, first serve basis, and we will continue to hand the supplies until we run out. Although we are low on some items – sanitizer spray seems to be most popular – our stock should be enough to meet business needs for the next several months. We simply ask that businesses don’t call in for a restock just to amass back stock at this time. Businesses can reserve new stock or request a restock of PPE by calling Tammy at 503-842-7525. Orders are customizable, so feel free to ask for just one or two items if that’s all you need for now. We are happy to help however we can.

The last thing we want is for anyone to stay away from the library just because they know they have a fine of a couple of dollars on their account. Let me give you one example. One day while I was shopping in Tillamook, I mentioned to the employee of the store that I worked at the library. The lady said she would love to take her young son to the library, but a few years ago, she had some fines and she just could not afford to go back. When I returned to the library, I looked up her account and found her fine was only $1.80...and that was enough to keep her away from the library during her child’s formative reading years! We see the same attitude on the bookmobile school visits. We ask parents to fill out library card applications for their children and some applications get returned with notes that say they don’t want their child to have a card because they could not afford the fines. And believe me, we get it. In this economy, who needs another potential bill to worry about? This is exactly why we are joining other libraries

We are purging old overdue fines dating back to January 1, 2019. If you had overdue fines that accrued any time from that date forward, we just made them disappear! But remember, overdue fines are different than a bill for a lost or damaged item. Fees for damaged and lost library items will still be assessed, so this is why you cannot just keep a library item forever. Once an item is a few months overdue, you will get a bill for the replacement cost of the material and your account could be blocked until the item is returned or the bill is paid. Some of you may be wondering if eliminating fines will encourage people to keep their items for excessive lengths of time. Let me tell you that fifteen years ago, I worked in a library that wondered the same thing when they went fine free...and the results were amazing! Not only did people NOT keep their items too long, most people returned them early. Studies at other libraries have shown similar results. And the best part...we no longer have the intimidation of fines holding people back from visiting and utilizing the library! Public libraries strive to be responsive to public needs. We feel this action of going fine free is a tangible way for us to shore up our mission of providing equal access to information and knowledge. The barrier of library late fines has been removed.

Aufdermauer celebrates 10 years as Chamber Executive Director The Tillamook Area Chamber of Commerce of a decade ago may well be unrecognizable to its modernday self. With a more accessible headquarters, more members and a stronger reputation within the community, the organization has changed significantly since 2011. Past and present Chamber board members say that Executive Director Justin Aufdermauer is the mastermind behind those changes. “When he started, the Chamber wasn’t doing very well,” said Whitey Forsman, a former Chamber board member who worked with Aufdermauer for 8 years. “Justin put a strategic plan

together and followed it. And it proved successful.” Last month marked Aufdermauer’s 10th year in the Chamber’s top leadership position. In that time, he has moved the Chamber headquarters, built stronger relationships with business and community partners, and provided a face for Tillamook County on regional and state boards. “I think people now see the Chamber as informed and educational. They appreciate what the Chamber does for our businesses and for our community. Justin has been the one that’s driving all of that. He has elevated the Chamber in that way,” said Lisa Greiner, president of the Chamber

board of directors. When Aufdermauer started at the Chamber, the organization’s headquarters was based in the Tillamook County Creamery Association parking lot as a visitor center. The Chamber had significantly fewer members, and it focused more on tourism and visitor relations than the community, he said. A car salesman with Tillamook Ford who was serving in a number of community leadership roles at the time, Aufdermauer applied for the job because he saw it as an opportunity “spend my career” doing something he loved: positively influencing his hometown by being involved in the community. Forsman said the new

director added “credibility” to the Chamber. He was a life-long local resident who knew the community well and truly cared about it. “Justin walks the walk and talks the talk,” Forsman said. Aufdermauer brought his community connections from groups like Kiwanis and the Tillamook Revitalization Association to the Chamber with him. He built upon those relationships to grow partnerships with the Creamery, the City of Tillamook and others, Forsman said. Those partnerships eventually led the Chamber to grow its membership to more than 300 businesses and individuals, and to move Chamber headquarters to a more prominent spot in Downtown Tillamook. “The Creamery approached us as they were expanding and worked closely with us to relocate. It was really a great opportunity for us to find a downtown location that afforded us an opportunity to still accommodate visitors while becoming more engaged with a broader part of the community,” Aufdermauer said. In his early years at the Chamber, Aufdermauer caught some flak for being a “free spirit” who was direct about what he wanted, Forsman said. But as he grew into the role – and was mentored by Forsman and other board members – Aufdermauer learned to use that quality to his benefit. “What really makes the difference with Justin is that he doesn’t mind confronting issues, but he doesn’t carry any ill feeling around,” Forsman said. Greiner added that Aufdermauer is “direct, but not mean about it.” “Sometimes when you’re too soft with people, the message gets lost. So I appreciate Justin’s bluntness,” she said. “He also has an energy that is infectious and gets people excited for things that are happening. His passion and excitement rub off on other people.” Greiner said she see the Chamber as the “rising tide that floats all of the community.” Aufdermauer’s talents and competitive nature fuel daily improvements that benefit Chamber members and the community at large, she said. “Justin wants the Chamber to be the best it can be for the community, to always be better than it was yesterday,” she said. “He thinks about problems from 360 degrees. He has

an organizational thought process, and he understands that there is a need for the people to be involved and informed. He just gets what the Chamber is here to do: build community.” Since starting at the Chamber, Aufdermauer has shifted his board service from local organizations to state and regional groups. He serves on boards for the Oregon State Chamber of Commerce, Oregon Destination Association and Oregon Coast Visitors Association, among other boards. Those positions allow Aufdermauer to represent Tillamook at the regional and state levels, which have not historically featured a local voice for the community. “He’s well-respected in the state and on state boards,” Forsman said. “He really is the go-to guy for politicians to get a pulse of what’s going on in our community.” Aufdermauer joked that his greatest accomplishment over the last decade has been adding to the membership roster businesses that had long avoided joining the Chamber. “One of my favorite accomplishments was getting Tom (Connaughton) at Diamond Art and Cindy (Gardner) at Sunflower lats to join the Chamber,” Aufdermauer said. “Those were two anchor stores I grew up with as a local, but they were not members of the Chamber. When they finally joined, I felt like I could cross that off my bucket list.” On a more serious note, Aufdermauer noted that adding longstanding Tillamook businesses as Chamber members indicated that the organization was operating in the way it was originally intended. Many businesses that had not seen the value of a membership before changed their minds as they saw the Chamber grow. As businesses started to see the value of a membership, Aufdermauer took it as a sign that the Chamber was making an impact in the community and meeting its mission to build a strong community where businesses can thrive. For him, that is the true pinnacle of his work so far. “Ten years ago, the Chamber had reached a point where it wasn’t supporting businesses and building community like it should. Me, the board and my staff have been able to fill that void successfully,” he said. “That is my greatest accomplishment.”

the first people I met when I came to Tillamook County, and I am proud to have befriended him. For years he was the “weekend guy” at the Tillamook Transfer Station, taking your money while he caught up with you, and feeding your dog a treat or your kids a lollipop. He had a gruff voice like many marines, which went hand-inhand with the twinkle in his eye, whether he was walking his dog, serving at the Elks, combining good food with great conversation at the Landing, or clipping fins at the hatchery. His wife Bev was a staple at the library counter, and when she retired, so did he – but they both returned regularly to fill in when needed. Rest in peace, my friend. If you have not yet voted, you still have a few days, but it’s too late to send it by mail. Fortunately we have an Official Ballot Box located in front of City Hall and the Library, where you can drop off your ballot day or night. People like Mark fought so that we would have the ability to choose our representatives through voting in honest and free elections. Choose your candidates wisely, and make your voice heard in this election.

Mary Jane Doris Jorgensen Lewis

Nov. 26, 1964 - March 29, 2021

M

ary Jane Doris Jorgensen Lewis passed away on March 29, 2021, surrounded by her family, at the age of 86. Mary Jane was born on Nov. 26, 1934 to Euler and Cecile Jorgensen in Portland, Oregon, the youngest of seven siblings, four brothers and two sisters. Mary Jane met her husband of 53 years, Chester Lewis, and they were married on Nov. 29, 1952. They had four children: Terry, Patricia, Mary Ellen and George. The couple moved to Tillamook

in 1956 and started their own appliance business, C.E. lewis Appliance. They sold their business in 1994 and moved to Independence, Oregon to be near Mary Ellen and her family. Mary Jane was preceded in death by her husband, Chester (Chet) Lewis in 2008, and son Terry Lewis. She is survived by daughter Patricia Brown (husband Ben); daughter Mary Ellen Moes (husband Keith); and son George Lewis (wife Cindy); nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; her sister Betty and many nieces and nephews. A private family gathering was held April 11, 2021 to honor Mary Jane’s life. Both Mary Jane and Chester will be laid to rest beside Earl E. Lewis (father of Chester) at the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Tillamook Oregon.

rederic James McInerney was born July 21st, 1949 to Mathou and Larry McInerney in Tillamook, Oregon and passed away May 4th, 2021 in Netarts, Oregon. Fred grew up in Tillamook and graduated from Tillamook High School in 1967, then went on to the University of Oregon. After two years in Eugene, Fred came back home and worked at LP lumber mill on the green chain.

Minimum wage is a myth All you have to do is look at the jobs on Craigslist and Indeed to see the wages offered. Employers will tell you they offer tips,benefits year round full time work and a raise after 30 days or so. Looks good on paper. This is a classic bait and switch. They may offer benefits but you will not be scheduled enough hours to qualify and if you do you still have to pay for it and it is usually basic. They offer year round work and you may be scheduled but if it is slow you will be sent home. They may offer a raise but it will be 25 or 50 cents per hour. They may offer full time but that is in the Summer and when the season ends you will be left off the schedule in favor of long term employees. Tip sharing is a relatively new concept and the servers don’t like it . The portion of tips you will get will be minimum and insignificant. Offering a Chef Salary of $42,500 sounds good but when you consider the fact that no Chef works 40 hour weeks, more like 50 or more, the rate is about $17 per hour, at least they get insurance and can eat for free.

He also spent time logging for George Churchill as well. Fred eventually went to work for TCCA and worked there until his retirement in 2016. Fred was an avid car racing fan and took many trips to watch the races in person, including Riverside Racetrack, Talladega and Daytona. Fred was a woodsman. He loved being out in nature, picking mushrooms, watching birds and combing the beach. Fred was well liked and possessed a funny yet dry sense of humor. He will be missed by all who knew him. Fred is survived by his mother Mathou, his brothers Richard and Philip; all of Tillamook, and sister Colette of Tacoma, nephews Adam (New York), Andrew (Bellingham) and brother in-law James of the Dalles. Other than no place to live, low wages and not enough hours there is no chance of advancement because the long term employees are first to be offered positions and after that their relatives and friends. Some hotels with food service bring in workers from other countries on a visa waiver program and give them a place to live for the Summer leaving locals out in the cold. It’s really difficult for the few honest deserving companies to survive but they somehow manage. It will never get better until the focus is on creating a working community. om (Charles Thomas) Butterfield, Jr. 77, Tillamook formally of Tigard, Oregon died peacefully on April 28, 2021. He was born on October 25, 1943 in Portland, Oregon to Irma Del Moore and Charles Thomas Butterfield, Sr. After graduating from Tigard High School, he attended Clark College transitioning into the Brick Layers apprenticeship school as a Brick Mason in the Portland area, a trade that he dearly loved. He married his high school sweetheart Jean Thille. In 1974, they moved to Tillamook and operated Corley & Butterfield Masonry with his longtime friend, Larry Corley, until he retired. Tom enjoyed hunting, clamming and fishing on the Oregon Coast. He also loved exploring and sightseeing in eastern Oregon. He felt fortunate to have been able to travel throughout the United States and to Europe multiple times. Tom loved nothing better than a good joke, a good old fashioned story or reminiscing about prior adventures. He was a gifted story teller who enjoyed bringing a smile to everyone’s face. And to quote a very good friend “never ruin a good story with accuracy”. Tom loved his family very much. He was so proud of them and would willing share what outstanding people they had become. He loved being a grandfather to his three grandchildren and two great grandchildren, always looking for some way to spoil them. He was very involved with youth sports. While he lived in Tigard, he coached and managed Tigard Little League Baseball and Softball for many years before moving to Tillamook. In Tillamook, he continued to be involved with softball, either as a coach or as an avid spectator always cheering them on. He enjoyed being involved in various community activities including the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. Tom was preceded in death by his daughter, Jane Sheah-

an, of Green Bay, Wisconsin, in March 2021 and by both of his parents. He is survived by his wife, Jean Butterfield, daughter and son-in-law, Chris and Kenny Gibbs of Hermiston, son-in-law, Joe Sheahan, of Green Bay, Wisconsin, and grandchildren, Morgan and Robert Gibbs of Hermiston and Chris Chen of Copra Cove, Texas and two great grandchildren of Hermiston. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, JoAnn Rivas of Tigard. He leaves behind Ted Lew of Tigard and Hertje and Uli Quarck of Flensberg, Germany, who were very special “kids” in his life. They liked to call him “Dad” and he loved it. He is also survived by his brother, Mark Butterfield. There will be a Celebration of Life on June 5th, at the Alderbrook Grange Hall, 5995 Alderbrook Rd. n this unsettled second spring of Covid when infection numbers seem to be increasing again, I have found I am still reluctant to shop in person at a nursery. In any year, May in a nursery is always a time of increased shoppers and I am not really ready to be around hordes of people even though I have had both vaccines and passed my two-week goal. Most of the larger nurseries are requiring masks and limiting visitors, but even so, it seems garden shoppers all gather near the same plants, be it annuals, vegetable starts or perennials. And if we have to wait in line to get in or get out, well, I don’t feel safe there, either. So what is the solution? There are a few possibilities. First, shop locally where we don’t have the big crowds they do in the cities. Local nurseries will still require masks and social distancing, but shopping locally has the added benefit of supporting

the local business owners. Tillamook County has several good nurseries and now even a native plant nursery in North Tillamook County. They may have reduced stock and restricted hours due to Covid, but it is worth calling or stopping by to see what each one has. Last spring, I so missed plant shopping, and even if the nurseries were open (and most of them weren’t), I didn’t feel like risking being out with people. So, as I did so often last year, I turned to the internet and found very good reviews about a Californiabased nursery called Annie’s Annuals and Perennials. When they sent me a catalog, I tried four different plants: a couple of perennials and a couple of annuals. I was amazed at how lovely the plants were and how well packaged. And they even used bio-degradable packing peanuts. The perennials are doing great and one of the annuals is still thriving a year later. I placed another order earlier this spring and, again, it was very well-packaged. I did have an issue with the condition of the plants as one was a very spikey agave and, despite the packing, had poked several holes in the leaves of the other succulent. A call to the Customer Service resulted in a happy customer who is now very pleased with the company and my order. I highly recommend this nursery if you are looking for unusual plants that do well on the Oregon Coast. Find them at www.anniesannuals.com. There are several other good nurseries that have

great online shopping experiences. I have personally used Mountain Crest Gardens for a succulent order and was very pleased. But not all mail order companies are created equal. So before I shop online, I go to www.davesgarden.com and go to the Garden Watchdog page to read the reviews. Dave’s Garden has compiled thousands of nursery ratings over the years from people all over the country. Be sure and note the location and date of where and when the reviews were submitted so you can compare apples to apples. There is a lot to be said for Dave’s Garden other than reviews of nurseries. They have a program by which you can join (free) and take advantage of the huge plant, bird and bug files they have amassed or use the “PlantScout” to track down a specific plant you heard about but can’t find. Dave’s Garden has been in operation since 2000 and the site has members from all over the world. The site offers a safe place to communicate with others for advice, shared experiences, or even to trade seeds and plants. Another solution for nursery avoidance is to get the word out to family and friends that you are looking to trade some plants from your garden for plants from theirs. This is also a nice way to start your “friendship garden” with

National Prevention Week Janeane Krongos Tillamook Family Counseling Center

any people in the community do not know me, so I would like to take a moment to introduce myself in this column. My name is Janeane Krongos, I work as a prevention coordinator at the Tillamook Family Counseling Center (TFCC). My roles at TFCC include: alcohol and other drug prevention education program coordinator, problem gambling prevention coordinator, suicide prevention coordinator, SOS Tillamook Facebook page administrator, and I assist with the Tillamook County portion of the Northwest Parenting Hub. If you have questions about the prevention program at TFCC please feel free to email me at Janeanek@tfcc.org. Today I would like to provide Tillamook County residents with information about the 10th anniversary of Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) National Prevention Week (NPW). The dates for this year’s NPW will be May 9th-15th. During this weeklong health observance, communities across the nation will highlight the past year’s prevention efforts, distribute substance use prevention information, raise awareness of suicide prevention, and promote mental health. Each year during NPW,

We purchased goods and services from local businesses. Services such as welding, toilets, garbage service, site engineering, gravel, and excavation. We purchased advertising, parts, lots of safety vests, supplies, printed tshirts, sweatshirts, hats, and other miscellaneous supplies. We tried to purchase a small, easy care parcel of ground but that disappointingly fell through. We were busy building our business with many goods and service purchased in Tillamook county. We served many guests, 51,000, in 5 years of operation. We think that is surprisingly good, we started with zero name recognition and were an unknown industry. If allowed to finish our 2020 season which was also marked by COVID, we would have served closer to a total of 54,000 guests since 2016. I would expect that our ridership for 2021 could easily exceeded 13,000 riders. Our ridership was expanding rapidly. We had many loyal repeat customers. Our guests purchased food, lodging, rode the train, visited museums, purchased souvenirs, fuel and many other things. Some of those guests may have decided to purchase a business, artwork, a house or vacation house, RV or whatever caught their eye that they could afford. Just imagine the multiplier effect of our customers in Tillamook county! You may not remember but, we were courted by the Port of Tillamook Bay, Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad, Tillamook tourism, chamber of commerce, the economic development community, county commissioners and others. All those creative thinkers were correct, Oregon Coast Railriders in Tillamook County would create jobs, bring money to the county by providing one more reason for locals to stay and play at home and tourist to come and play.

SAMHSA selects 5 daily prevention themes. This year’s themes include, prescription drug and opioid misuse, underage drinking and alcohol misuse, illicit drug use and youth marijuana use, tobacco use, and suicide. SAMHSA’s topics are based on pressing public health topics that can affect people’s lives. Throughout this week, local health service partners will be participate in NPW. One local health service provider who will be participating is TFCC. During this weeklong observance, TFCC will share prevention information on Facebook (SOS Tillamook), distribute paper prevention publications in NPW themed information bags, and will present a free virtual suicide prevention training (Question Persuade Refer Gatekeeper training). Consider some of the following ideas to participate in this year’s NPW: • Talk to youth about substance use prevention: Talk-

You will also remember that we were the first in the nation to offer commercial railriding as outdoor recreation. Our fledging business began as a vision with no business model to follow. Opening was a no go, until we found some insurance. Railriding as a commercial business had no business model nor had it proven its’ worth in 2014 when we opened Joseph Branch Railriders in Wallowa county. Since those tense unknown times, we have an excellent safety record with our insurance company. More insurance companies are willing to sell liability insurance to commercial railriding businesses thanks to our excellent record. It is unfortunate that there are those who have lost sight of the fact that a simple parking lot, tidy railroad corridor, and the movable structures that comprise our office and storage facilities required significant planning and investment. Each parking lot required attendance to many meetings, approval by numerous officials, the paying of copious fees and several engineering site proposals before construction could begin. Thanks to Kim using a pair of loppers, tough gloves, and determination to physically remove the eight-foot-tall black berry vine barrier that covered ½ mile of track between Bay City and Tillamook, Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad can now run their locomotive all the way to Tillamook. It has been forgotten that the fine parking lot in Wheeler started as large lumps of overgrown brush, dirt and rocks, a large decaying stump and rocky outcropping. It took heavy equipment and a skilled operator to create that parking lot, but Molher Sand and Gravel transformed that wasteland into something usable. Our Wheeler parking lot is now coveted by others. Oregon Coast Railriders has supported the community. OCR donated free tickets to local fund raisers, hosted youth groups at a discounted price, shared our Wheeler parking lot with OCSR free of charge in 2019 and would have again 2020 if our working relationship had not abruptly ended. OCR is now in litigation with OCSR over contractual differences. Of course, it is easy to start a business once someone has blazed the trail. Rest assured there will be a great learning curve of trial and error just as we

These practices include: using medication only as directed by the prescriber, never sharing prescription medications, placing prescription medications out of the reach of small children, securing medication in a lock box, and the disposal of unused and/or expired medication at a dedicated medication drop off location. • Participate in a virtual suicide prevention training: On Friday May 14th, Tillamook Family Counseling Center will offer a free virtual Question Persuade Refer (QPR) Gatekeeper training. This training is an evidence based suicide prevention training that has been used worldwide.

It is more hurtful than you can ever image to not be allowed on the rails this summer. But there is no doubt that Oregon Coast Railriders has significantly contributed to Tillamook county. Who would ever guess that a five month a year business could impact Tillamook county to the estimated total of $4,539,000.00 in a five-year period? Who would guess that Tillamook county will be missing out on approximately $1,157,000 trickle down gain from Oregon Coast Railriders not operating this summer, 2021? Kim and I in our wildest dreams would never ever have predicted that our home grown unique railriding business could impact Tillamook county to such a large degree. Just imagine what Oregon Coast Railriders could do for Tillamook county if mother nature would allow us to run year- round! (Calculations based on Runyan 2013 tourism study.) Prevention topics may fit in nicely with many class lessons including: health, physical education, and science classes. There several free online prevention resources that were designed for school settings. One that I would recommend is the National Institute on Drug Abuse’s (NIDA) Mind Matters series. This 9 topic prevention series is perfect for students in 5th -8th grade. Teachers can order these publications on the NIDA Drug Pubs website. J

ust as we have to “move well” to “be well”, we also have to feel good enough to get moving in the first place. Old injuries, chronic conditions, muscular imbalances, pain and fear can prevent us from getting or staying active. A basic principle of physics states that a body in motion stays in motion and a body at rest stays at rest. This is true for objects like rocks and cars, and it is also true for humans. There are many challenges to getting and staying motivated to move our bodies. Busy schedules, lack of knowledge or comfort beginning an exercise program, pain and negative experiences can all derail the best of intentions. It is comforting to know there are some interpersonal supports available for people right here in Tillamook County. Stuck in a Rut: If you are stuck in park and struggling to get active, it can be helpful to explore what is going on “under the hood.” Very rarely is lack of interest in moving simply a matter of being lazy. Even laziness has its reasons.

If we feel overwhelmed thinking about starting something new, we won’t be very motivated to get started. Just like a rock needs to be nudged to roll down a hill or a car needs someone to put their foot on the gas pedal to get moving, sometimes people need help getting going too. Recognizing and addressing potential roadblocks is key to moving forward. If pain is preventing you from getting started, schedule an appointment with a trained therapist who can help identify physical imbalances and guide you through researchbased approaches that allow a return to pain-free movement. It may take some time to resolve underlying issues, but that isn’t surprising since imbalances tend to develop over time. There are several options to choose from in Tillamook County, including through Adventist Health Tillamook. According to PT/OT Department Director, Brandan Lym, “If you are interested in receiving therapy services, you can obtain a referral from a medical provider and be seen in either Physical or Occupational Therapy. Those interested in attending Physical Therapy can also self-refer, depending on their insurance plan benefits. People can

call 503-815-2291 for more information.” Another local resource is the Otago program. This program is for individuals who are home-bound and may be struggling with mobility issues or fear of falling. Clients receive an in-home consultation by an occupational or physical therapist and then work in their own home with a personal trainer. The goal of the program is to help people confidently build activity into their daily routine at a pace that works for them. Getting in Gear: If your engine is running but you are struggling to get moving, it is a good idea to explore what activities you enjoy or have enjoyed doing in the past. Enlist the support of family or friends, join a walking group or explore local outdoor areas. Beginning with something fun and rewarding is likely to get you moving. Just as a rock gains momentum as it rolls downhill, our movement activities can be self-perpetuating. The more we move, the more we want to move.
