Two million bees delivered to area Beekeepers T

illamook Beekeepers Association ordered close to twomillion bees and distributed them to 70 of their beekeepers recently. The bees were purchased from Joe Hansen of Foothills Honey Company out of Colton OR, a second generation business started by Hanson’s mother and father. According to Brad York, president of the Tillamook Beekeepers Association, the bees cost the association $20,000; they received 154 nucleus or nucs as they are called with 10,000 to 12,000 bees, enough for a hive or colony. After the bees are put into the individual hives, the queen will produce 1,500 eggs per day and the colony will grow to 50,000 to 80,000 bees by the fall when the beekeepers can start harvesting honey. “We do this every year,” York said. “Last year we purchased 85 nucs, this year we bought 150 nucs.” According to York, the association had added 44 beekeepers to its membership since January 1, bringing the total membership up to 157 beekeepers countywide. Bob Allen, a beekeeper from Garibaldi, was also there receiving nucs, Bob started the Beekeepers Assoc. in the 1970s. What is a Nucleus Colony? Adding nucs is great way to jump start a new hive. A nucleus colony, more commonly known as a “nuc” or “split,” is one of the easiest ways for beekeepers to start a colony in a new hive. established hive. Because they come from a successful colony, nucs contain comb with developing brood at several stages of development. In most cases, they also contain cells with honey and pollen stored by the original colony. What are the Benefits of Using Nucs? There are several benefits of using nucs to start a new colony. To begin with, adding nucs to a hive is easy. Typically, a beekeeper will
advertise nucs for sale when their established hives grow to the point where they are likely to swarm. The purchaser brings their new hive to the seller’s location, and four or five frames of comb are transferred into the new hive. This method has the distinct advantage of starting off a hive with a good base population of adult workers and brood at various stages of development. Unlike purchasing package bees where there is a 21day wait for newly-laid eggs to develop, workers start emerging from

Month of May brings the start of Farmers Market season on Oregon’s north coast From Astoria to Neskowin, enjoy a bounty of local foods, beverages and crafts

tarting this weekend, farmers markets along Oregon’s north coast open for business, offering the tastiest of locally grown, caught, harvested and crafted foods and beverages. All part of the North Coast Food Trail, eight farmers markets are a cause for celebration for both locals and visitors. With more than 100 small farms in Clatsop and Tillamook counties, the markets showcase a variety of locally grown vegetables and fruits. In addition, there are several sustainable fisheries, breweries, cheesemakers, distillers, cideries, and bakeries. Aufdermauer named Oregon’s Chamber Executive of the Year T

illamook Chamber of Commerce’s Justin Aufdermauer was named Oregon’s Chamber Executive of the Year by the Oregon State Chamber of Commerce. The award is the top honor for a Chamber director in the state of Oregon. OSCC recognized Aufdermauer’s creativity, commitment to Tillamook and willingness to share his knowledge and resources with other Chambers in the state. He currently serves as the executive director of the Tillamook Chamber, a position he’s held for 11 years. “I think this award is a tribute to Justin’s passion for the community. He wants to see the Chamber be that rising tide that lifts everybody’s boat, whether it’s a business or a community member or a local organization,” said Lisa Greiner, president of the Tillamook Chamber Board of Directors. OSCC, the state’s leading organization for Chamber support and grassroot business advocacy, began naming a Chamber Executive of the Year in 1985 to recognize the work Chamber directors do in their communities. The organization works with more than 80 Chambers throughout the state representing well over 26,000 business. To be eligible for the award, a recipient must have worked in an executive role at a Chamber for at least five years. The selection committee also considers continued Chamber education/professional development, personal character, management excellence, leadership and community relationships. Aufdermauer, 36, is among the youngest recipients of the award. “He started at the Tillamook Chamber so young, and he’s just come so far in his experience and knowledge,” said Colene Martin, chief operating officer of the OSCC. “He’s got an energy and this youth behind him that Tillamook is fortunate to have. He’s always thinking outside of the box.” Aufdermauer’s nomination highlighted many of his creative programs, including the Tillamook Takeout campaign, which encouraged residents to support local restaurants by buying takeout when they were closed for in-person dining during the pandemic. The Tillamook Chamber spent about $4,000 to purchase prizes and advertising for the event; it generated more than $4 million in takeout revenue for businesses throughout Tillamook County. “That was pretty astounding,” Martin said. “It was a huge economic driver, especially with farms and fisheries and all of the food suppliers Tillamook uses. And it helped keep local businesses open during the pandemic.” Aufdermauer also became a beacon of knowledge that business owners could turn to as they navigated new

The U.S. Coast Guard fined a recreational boater last Thursday for crossing the restricted Tillamook Bay bar in March in Garibaldi. On March 31, 2022, at approximately 11:30 a.m., a 23-foot recreation vessel approached the Tillamook Bar with three people onboard. Coast Guard Station Tillamook Bay’s bar watch tower radioed the vessel as it approached the closed bar. The bar was closed due to posing a hazard to vessels under 35feet. The vessel reportedly admitted to knowing of the
bar restriction and continued to approach. During the transit, the vessel experienced an engine causality and broke down between the jetties. After the vessel became disabled, Station Tillamook Bay launched a rescue crew aboard a 47-foot motor lifeboat and towed the vessel to safety. The tow took approximately an hour and a half. “Bar restrictions save lives,” said Lt. Cmdr. Colin Fogarty, the Enforcement Chief at Coast Guard Sector
Columbia River. “Bar assessments are conducted by highly trained surfmen who utilize years of experience and training to determine whether vessels can safely navigate the dangerous waters. When a boater violates a bar restriction, they not only place their own lives at risk, but the lives of their passengers and ultimately Coast Guard members, should we need to save them. If a boater violates the restriction, the Coast Guard will seek to hold the boater responsible through fines or
criminal referral. A fine of $3,500 is a lot of money to pay for salmon but, it could have cost that boater and his three passengers their lives.” The Coast Guard has issued a $3,500 Notice of Violation for violating a restricted bar (Title 33 CFR §165.13(b)) and negligent operations (Title 46 USC §2302(a)). The Coast Guard is dedicated to ensuring the safety of the public. These incidents and the subsequent fines are preventable and serve to protect the maritime public.

Oregon’s U.S. Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden today announced a total of $750,000 in Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funding headed to three fish passage projects in Tillamook County. All three projects will contribute to the Salmon SuperHwy strategic effort to restore 95 percent historic habitat connectivity for five species of Endangered Species Act-listed salmonids and Pacific lamprey. These projects are also intended to reduce flooding and improve public safety in the floodprone coastal community. “Tillamook County’s Salmon SuperHwy project is an excellent example how fish and wildlife recovery directly benefit local communities,” said Senator Merkley, Chairman of the Senate Interior Appropriations Subcommittee that provided funding for this program. “The health of Tillamook’s community goes hand-in-hand with the health of the port, fish habitats, and infrastructure conditions. The three projects funded through the Bipartisan Infrastructure
Law will support climateresilient infrastructure and reconnect fish habitats. I’m pleased to have helped secure this funding, and I will continue to fight for more federal investment to support habitat restoration and fish passage projects.” “The Salmon SuperHwy is a proven method for tackling depleted salmon and steelhead stocks while investing in rural economies,” said Senator Wyden. “It’s abundantly clear that Oregonians believe strongly in resultsdriven solutions to addressing dwindling salmon populations, and investing in the Salmon SuperHwy is a clear win for the health of both fish habitats and coastal communities.” The three projects funded in Tillamook County can be found below: Myrtle Creek — $500,000: This project will focus on removing an undersized fish passage barrier culvert on Myrtle Creek to reopen 1.0 mile of high priority habitat spawning and rearing habitat. This project is just above
the recently restored 70-acre portion of Kilchis Estuary and will increase rearing and smoltification habitat. Illingsworth Creek — $150,000: This project will replace an undersized culvert along Illingsworth Creek in important freshwater habitat just above the head of tide and the newly restored tidally influenced Miami Wetland. Addtionally, this project will provide 1.6 miles of habitat access for Oregon Coast chum, spring and fall Chinook salmon, ESA listed coho salmon, summer and winter steelhead, sea-run and resident cutthroat trout, and Pacific lamprey. Samson Creek — $100,000: The project will provide 1.8 miles of habitat access for Pacific lamprey, spring and fall Chinook salmon, ESA listed coho salmon and chum salmon, summer and winter steelhead, and sea-run cutthroat trout. The existing perched culvert will be replaced with a 45-foot bridge.

CLEANING The City of Tillamook hosted their second annual touch-a-truck event in honor of public service recognition week. The event was an excellent opportunity for children and all members of the public to see service trucks, first responder vehicles, fire trucks, the library bookmobile and police cars, first hand. Kids of all ages were encouraged to climb aboard the trucks, honk horns and get photos in the various vehicles. The event was well attended, free to the public and organized by the city manager Nathan George and Ashley Rushing. Guillaume Tike, a Tillamook father of two, laughed, “I might have had even more fun exploring the trucks than my kids did.”

Continued from Page A1 and quickly changing state regulations about COVID. He sent out regular “COVID + Business” updates with easy-to-understand breakdowns of new rules. He found creative ways to adapt events, so that the community did not have to lose out on traditions during the pandemic. For example, he modified the annual June Dairy Parade to run as a nocontact “inside out” parade, where floats lined the street and spectators drove through from a safe distance in their cars. Other communities followed his example in the months after. Beyond his COVID programs, Aufdermauer received recognition for helping recover a Chamber that was struggling, creating a positive ripple effect to improve the economy and local community. When he started as the executive director in Tillamook, the Chamber’s headquarters was based in the Tillamook County Creamery Association parking lot as a visitor center. The Chamber had significantly fewer members, and it focused more on tourism and visitor relations than the community. Aufdermauer moved the headquarters to a more accessible and prominent location downtown. He implemented new
community programs to help businesses and improve the quality of life for all residents in Tillamook. He has continued to grow his skills as a Chamber executive by serving on boards and enrolling in professional development academies. Aufdermauer served as an officer and board member on the OSCC for nearly 8 years and is an active member of the Tillamook Coast Visitor Association board, Oregon Coast Visitors Association board and Oregon Destination Management Association board. He is a graduate of the Western Association of Chamber Executives Academy, the US Chamber Institute for Organizational Management and the Oregon Tourism Leadership Academy. “Tillamook is extremely lucky to have Justin as the executive director of the Chamber of Commerce there,” Martin said. “He has so much experience and he continues to grow. I liked what one of his nominators said: Justin wants the Chamber to be the best it can be for the community, and he’s always working to make it better than it was yesterday.” Martin said one of Aufdermauer’s most impressive qualities — and a big reason for his unanimous selection for the award — is how he constantly uplifts other Chamber of Commerce professionals in Oregon. At the OSCC conference this month, he delivered a lecture about re-
thinking traditional Chamber practices that may actually hold an organization back. He openly shared example documents from the Tillamook Chamber for those that needed templates. “I remember when I first met Justin in 2012, I needed a policy manual, and he shared his with me because he knows things like that are expensive, and he just wanted to help,” Martin said. “He shares his tools, his resources, his best practices. That elevates other Chambers throughout the state.” Greiner said she sees Aufdermauer do this in the local community, as well. “If I don’t know where to turn, I turn to Justin first because he generally has a good idea of what path I should take, whether it benefits him directly or not,” Greiner added. “He just wants everybody to succeed, because he knows that will benefit the whole community.” Aufdermauer said he was humbled to receive the award. He is the second Tillamook Chamber executive to earn the honor; Maryanne Stark received the same award for her work in 2001. “I’m really proud of everything we’ve done in our community,” Aufdermauer said. “Chamber directors have a really valuable position in their community, and I want to encourage all the Chamber executives in the state to take hold of that and know they do make a difference in their communities.”

on April 30, but a number of diehards turned out to help clean up the Barbara Bennett Community Center. A crew worked outside, trimming hedges and pulling weeds. Others worked inside, cleaning the bathroom, kitchen and general meeting area and organizing the lending library. Patti and Mike Smith, our building managers, led the effort and asked for a big shout-out to all the others who participated in the clean-up: David and Ruth Freitas, Charles Ansorge, Kathy and Kevin Burke, Scott Gordon, Mary Jane and Rod Pelson, and yours truly. After that big effort Saturday morning, it was fun to relax at the end-ofthe-month potluck in the spruced-up community center. There was plenty of food to eat, from ham with scalloped potatoes to salads to homemade pies, and a good turnout of more than 20 individuals. Next up is

mountains to the north and three Canada geese flying overhead. No bites that morning, but Capt. Pete swears he had a lick. We do hope that the Memaloose boat launch gets dredged this year. Boats can get stuck in the mud trying to put in or take out when the tide is low. This project is long overdue; the launch lanes at Memaloose were last dredged in 2014. We are counting on the Tillamook County Commissioners to work with a multitude of permitting agencies to push the project over the finish line. Work can take place only in a narrow time slot when it is permissible to dredge this summer. Keep your fingers crossed! If you haven’t stopped by Salty Raven in a while, it’s well worth a visit. If you’re registered to vote in Tillamook County, you have a week left to turn in your ballot, which has a number of issues of local importance. One of those is Measure 29-164, which authorizes a renewal of the 5-year levy that supports the library network in Tillamook County. It’s unchanged from the previous levy — still 65 cents for every $1000 of assessed value. This levy goes to support all the libraries in our county: Tillamook main, South County in Pacific City, Garibaldi, Rockaway Beach, Bay City, and North County in Manzanita. That reflects the size of the county — 1,333 square miles of mountains, beaches, pasture land, and the towns and cities that dot this patch of the northern Oregon Coast. I had a chance to connect recently with Jean Scholtz, president of the Rockaway Beach Library Board, who had some great information about all the services the library provides, plus a few new ones coming soon. Most people are familiar with the basic principle of a library: you borrow a book, return it when you’re done, all without spending a nickel.

Whether your taste runs to fiction, literature, how-to guides, or research, it’s a phenomenal bargain. But Jean reminded me that the library offers more than just books and periodicals. “The library should be commended for the online services it offered the community during the pandemic – including WIFI access, movies and books available online,” she wrote to me. She didn’t need to remind me about the value of the library’s wifi access. When we were closing on our Rockaway Beach home in 2017, the library was a key place for us to connect to our financial institutions and our lenders. We were able to print copies of documents that had to be signed (in ink on paper, imagine that!), using the library’s facilities. It was much easier than fighting the traffic to and from Portland several times a week. I had not known, however, that as Jean informed me, the library also maintains “a library of things that can be checked out (fishing poles, telescopes, and many other interesting items.)” That sounds like something to investigate when our grandchildren come to the Oregon Coast over the summer. And Jean added, “Soon, librarians will be able to notarize documents for you.” Rockaway Beach Library

This means that the county library provides the books, the librarian, and all the services offered. These are the services that Measure 29-164 will fund for the next five years. In addition, the library board is making plans for a new sign for the library, pending approval of the levy. “We are keeping the old historic sign but need a new one higher on the building so it can be seen from the street,” wrote Jean. “We are also working on getting some art work to display in the library.” Beyond that, though, our library’s building maintenance, cleaning, and landscaping are funded separately by the Friends of the Rockaway Beach Library and the City of Rockaway Beach. The Friends of the Rockaway Beach Library is a nonprofit (503c) organization, supported by membership. Membership is $10 a year. Further support comes from “donations and book sales of used books donated by the community,” Jean wrote. I donated a number of our older cookbooks to the library when we moved here, downsizing from the fourbedroom home in Tualatin where my kids grew up and moved away from, to the place we call the “Tiny Beach Cottage” here in Rockaway. Jean added, “We will be having a book sale on July 2 this year.” With the return of the fireworks, the parade, and the Wiener Dog Races, the weekend of the Fourth is shaping up to be busy and exciting. You might find some great cookbooks, if they haven’t already been snapped up. And I hope to see some of you there!

Tillamook Chamber endorses TBCC bond Justin Aufdermauer Executive Director

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Vote to support your public services, but remember: there was (and still is) a better way Rural communities all over Oregon are suffering from a lack of funds for public services. At the same time the timber industry is making record breaking profits. Something’s not right here. And those who are arguing about the court’s recent dismissal of the Linn County lawsuit know perfectly well what’s wrong because they’ll be the first to defend the inherent injustice of the suit. That lawsuit was wrong headed from the start. not only did it wrongly assume that the stewards of our state owned forests were tasked with extracting profit alone from the people’s forests, but it sought to take even more from the state’s residents rather than repair budget problems the proper way — by taxing large corporations who are pillaging the private forelands beyond sustainable limits. Decades ago, when prices and jobs were volatile due to multiple factors (not just
owls, by the way), Wall Street investment firms swooped in to buy up timberland, leading to extractive profit-only practices that let to loss of carbon sequestration, more fire prone drought, loss of wildlife habitat and more poisons dumped into our forests and drinking water. Back then there were warnings from scientists and even a former investment officer from a large forest land investment company that investor driven forestry was ecologically damaging and less sustainable for our rural communities. When investors need big returns there’s little left to go around. Industry lobbyists will adamantly insist that they do pay taxes, but these taxes are greatly reduced from what they should be. In 90s Republican representatives introduced a bill to eliminate the timber harvest tax — a tax still paid in neighboring states by the same companies that log here. The “jobs, jobs, jobs” mantra doesn’t make sense when there are more forest sector jobs per acre in neighboring states and communities there are receiving more tax benefits from the same industry. And the property taxes paid by industrial timber owners here are a pittance
compared towhead residents pay. How would you feel about a tax rate of $4.46/acre? guilty, perhaps? A lobbyist involved in pushing for eliminating the harvest tax defends himself and industry by saying that its didn’t cause counties to lose as much money because, “they simply shifted the tax burden to residents and small business owners.” In reality, timber-dependent communities have lost billions over the past decades since the loss of this revenue. that would have gone a log way to relieve the financial pressures on public services like libraries, schools, etc. Please do vote to support your local services. Our support is essential. But let your local and state officials hear from you that it’s beyond time to right the wrong of giving big timber a pass when it comes to paying their fair share. let’s not sue our own state in a misguided effort to find funds — let’s bring back the harvest tax instead. here’s roughly a week left to cast your ballot in the May Primary Election, and I wanted to use this time to endorse one of the local measures that the Tillamook Chamber Executive Board believes will have a positive impact for the community. (Yes, I know some of you may have already sent in your ballots. But for those of you who are still mulling over which bubbles to fill in, we hope this helps!) The Tillamook Chamber of Commerce supports Tillamook Bay Community College’s $14.4 million bond measure to raise money to build a new healthcare education building. The Chamber’s Executive Board reviewed the bond measure and found several reasons to endorse it. It’s great for workforce development, it meets community needs for meeting spaces and it doesn’t increase the current TBCC bond tax rate. It also aligns well with the City of Tillamook’s timeline for updating the sewer system to support more construction. I’ll cover all of that more in depth later in this piece, but for now, I’ll start with another huge plus. The bond will help the college capture $8 million matching grant from the Oregon state legislature. That means the bond will go further than it normally would, because there is extra funding available. But that matching grant only comes our way if the college passes its bond and can front the other half of the project bill. The Chamber sees it as imperative that we leverage these matching grant resources while we have the opportunity. Workforce is a significant issue for all sectors, and while this is a complex issue, the TBCC bond will play a huge role in supporting and developing our local workforce, especially when it comes to healthcare professionals. The money raised through the bond will be used to build a new healthcare education building. With this, the college can add a nursing program, add more healthcare occupational
training programs and provide a space to expand and add new degrees and certificates. As it stands, TBCC is the only community college in Oregon that does not have a dedicated healthcare education program. Successfully passing this bond would change that and bring us in line with the rest of the state. A 2022 report by the Oregon Employment Department shows that the healthcare and social assistance industry in Northwest Oregon, which includes Tillamook, had the second most number of vacancies in 2021. But nursing assistants, mental health counselors and personal care aids were in the top 20 most difficult to fill positions. That tells me that we have openings — that we need doctors and nurses and hospital support staff — but we aren’t able to fill them. A training program right in our backyard, of residents that already live here, will create a larger pool to fill those necessary jobs. I think it speaks for itself to know that the bond not only has the Chamber’s support, but also the support of Adventist Health Tillamook — one of our largest local employers Another plus of the bond? The new healthcare building will open up another large community space that could be used for meetings, gatherings and events by all kinds of groups. TBCC is a great partner when it comes to renting out their classrooms and building spaces for an affordable rate. This new building will be no different. In fact, the need for a new meeting space is something the community told the college it wanted in 2019 with a study on the education interests of Tillamook County. TBCC listened to those responses and found a way to meet those needs. Finally, the bond measure won’t change the amount you’re paying toward taxes for TBCC-related projects. The last time TBCC referred a bond measure to voters was 2006. That bond helped build the main college building on Third Street and upgrade and construct college facilities at the high schools in the county. It passed with an estimated tax
rate of 19 cents per $1,000 assessed value, or about $67 annually on a $350,000 home, for a 20-year duration. That bond debt will be paid off in 2027. And as it turns out, the actual tax rates have been less over the period of the 2006 bond. If the proposed measure passes, the tax rate would remain an estimated rate of 19 cents per $1,000 of assessed value for a 20-year duration. That includes the years the two bonds overlap. That means that Tillamook has a rare opportunity to extend the college’s building capacity for two more decades at the very same rate we’ve paid since 2006. TBCC isn’t asking for a rate hike — just our continued support. That’s pretty amazing. And now for what might be considered the elephant in the room for some. If you’ve been reading the Chamber Chatters or listening in to City Council meetings, you may know that the city’s sewer system for everything east of Miller Avenue is critically near capacity. So you might ask, “How can a full sewer system support another, large building at the college? Is this TBCC project really a good idea?” That’s a fair question, the Chamber has been in conversations with both the college and the City of Tillamook about just this. While the sewer capacity concerns should remain top priority, the timeline to correct the sewer lines coincides well with the college’s construction timeline. We have every reason to believe the sewer infrastructure concerns will be resolved by the time the college builds and opens their healthcare building. Often times when public projects like these align it elevates the priority of both and our community will benefit from the project synergy. This project will benefit the local workforce, keep our local healthcare talent in our community and take advantage of an $8 million match from the state that we can’t afford to miss out on. For these reasons, the Chamber supports the TBCC bond measure. Join us in our support by saying Yes to TBCC on this May’s ballot.

We also have some really informative books on how to travel through Europe using the Eurail train system. If Europe isn’t your thing, we also have books on just about every other country worldwide. How about a cruise? We have some great books that explain every detail of how to plan your perfect adventure on ships, both big and small. Right now is an excellent time to get some spectacular deals on the price of a cruise. The industry is cutting some really big deals to get people back on their “floating cities”.
Would you rather stay in the United States? We absolutely have you covered there. Pick a state...any state! We likely have a guidebook covering every area, from coast to coast. A little planning ahead is sure to make the trip go smoother, even if you have been to your destination of choice before. Another great option is to stay a little closer to home. A Pacific Northwest “staycation” is easy on the pocketbook, and travel time is so much shorter. Even though we live here, we still have the latest and greatest guidebooks that cover our neck of the woods. Those of us living here sometimes take our beautiful coast for granted. There are people from around the world who literally dream about walking on our beaches. While hiking at Cape Lookout this week, I ran into a couple from Germany who were absolutely overcome with emotion as they gazed upon a spectacular vista on the Cape Trail. Through teary eyes, they told me, “We just can’t believe how clean the air is and how breathtaking every view is! How lucky you are to live here. We have been planning this holiday for years.” We have books that guide you through hikes, scenic drives, horse trails, and campgrounds from Olympic National Park and south to California redwoods. Our resources can get you planning a trip to any of the mountains in our area...Hood, St. Helens, Rainier, The Three Sisters, and more. reetings Bay City. Yes, I’m finally back at my desk. We have decided that six months was too long of a vacation from family, friends, and all that we love about Bay City. However, our time with friends and family in Arizona was “A hoot and a half.” In the coming weeks I will be bringing you details of Bay City events, fun gatherings, meetings, and (I would add) stories of my favorite people who give of their time for the betterment of all of Bay City. A belated Happy Mothers’ Day to two of my favorite
mothers – Fay Simmons and Marj Dyrnes; both women of faith, courage, and grace; truly mothers to be admired. And there are more celebrations. I am singing Happy Birthday to Kevin Stoecker and congratulating Kevin and his wife Stephanie on their anniversary; lovely people with a lovely family who are pure joy to know. This year our community will look more like it had in the past. I am happy to say that there is a parade and fireworks. It is time for some patriotic cheer my friends! It is exciting to watch your council grapple with city. business and issues. After all, they are decisions that affect how we work, live, and play in Bay City, and they take that responsibility very seriously. And sometimes it is very entertaining! The City Council meets the second Monday (5:30 PM) and Tuesday (6:00 PM) of each month at city hall. We have a new council member, Mr. Tim Josi. Most of you will know Tim as a former Tillamook County Commissioner, State Representative, board member of Tillamook PUD,
and a volunteer fireman. I’m sure that the council and the city will benefit from his vast experience. Welcome aboard councilman Josi. I do not know where the time goes. It felt like April had only begun, and the next day it was May. May, the month of memorials, when we pause to recognize the many who gave their lives to protect and serve their communities and our country. Please mark your calendar for May 15th for Peace Officer Memorial Day, and May 30th for Memorial Day to remember those in the military who
died in times of war. Originally Memorial Day was called Decoration Day and was set to honor those lost during the Civil War. It was changed to Memorial Day after World War One. She started up the Hunter’s Helpers Facebook page to help Jeff Hunter and his wife Nancy through his battle with ALS. She also keeps up the flowers around the caboose, which was sorely needed and she does endless volunteer work. Cindy will be riding in our 4th of July parade, so you can give her a shout out thanking her for her endless community service. The 15th Annual 2022 Firecracker Weiner Nationals are also returning this year. This is a charity dachshund race, which benefits the Tillamook Animal Shelter. There are both Wiener dog races and non-wiener dog
races. They will have costume contests, trick contests, clothing to purchase and hot dogs for all. They will be on Monday, July 4th at 1pm. Registration is 12-1pm. The suggested donation is $5 for race registration This free event is at the Phyllis Baker City Park on Coral St. And folks, if you have never been to this event, well simply put, it is a riot! John Luce will be 90 years old in June. You may wonder what that has to do with July 4th? Well, his wife, Sue, is planning a family and friends belated birthday party on Sunday, July 3rd from 1-4pm at the Lions Hall. Friends may want to drop by and celebrate with John. What fun! The 4th of July weekend is action packed!
As in the past, I see Rockaway Beach a ‘sea of red, white and blue’ on July 4th 2022. Let’s add some sparkle and sizzle by dazzling our families and tourists with our Hometown Americana! Yes, there will be a parade, your backyard barbecues, fireworks and games again this year. e have talked a little about the necessities of having pollinators in our gardens for a variety of reasons. Pollinators help create a diverse ecosystem and are essential for plant reproduction. Without pollinators, we humans would be at a loss for pollinating our vegetable and flower gardens. And, of course, the native wildlife depends on the same fruits of huckleberries, salmonberries that song birds - and even bears and coyotes – rely on for their diets. There is a concept floating around that started in the United Kingdom a few years ago that focuses on not

mowing our lawns for the month of May. The basic idea is that by not mowing, we provide habitat and forage to help native bees. This is especially important in urban areas where bee populations are decreasing rapidly. One of the first US cities to adopt a No Mow May policy was Appleton, Wisconsin in 2020 and the concept has spread to other Wisconsin cities and further into Michigan and Maine. This idea was spearheaded by a biology professor at Lawrence University. After just the first year, he and his team of researchers discovered that the pollinator population had risen by over 500%. That’s quite a jump. Appleton City Council agreed to suspend their weed ordinance for May in 2020. But proponents of No Mow May had to justify the council doing so by using sciencebased information. Researchers Israel Del Toro and Relena Ribbons from Lawrence enlisted homeowners to participate in a study and over 435 families registered that first year. The researchers compared the homeowner lawns with those of nearby parks that were regularly
mowed by the city. They documented the abundance of bees as well as the species diversity found. The results were impressive. The participating yards had three times higher richness of species and five times higher the number of bees compared to the bees in the mown parks. But there is more. Besides being good for the pollinators, reducing mowing frequency can save water and help your lawn become more resilient to drought. It also can reduce emissions from gas-powered lawn equipment and reduce gasoline usage. No small thing in the days of almost $5 per gallon of gas. Longer grass also provides habitat for the ground-dwelling bees. Not mowing for a month means free time for you to do something else…perhaps weeding or pruning. Or just reading a book. It will help educate your

neighbors and people passing by as to your intensions if you place a simple sign in your yard. Something like “Bee-friendly gardening done here” or “A No Mow May participant lives here” may bridge that gap between people thinking you are being neglectful and the reality of wanting a healthy, thriving ecosystem. You may even find your interest will spark the interest of others to participate. We are a little late – in mid-May – in getting started, but even a couple of weeks will help. And you can jump in earlier next May. Even in communities that are not willing to set aside their ordinances for weed and lawn maintenance, we can mow areas close to neighbors and streets and let a portion of the lawn as a buffer zone for bees and other pollinators. Adding some bee- and butterfly- friendly plants will also help populations. There are some very pretty pollinating plants to choose for any garden. Of course, as with everything, there are distractors that say by not mowing for a month, ticks and other undesirable insects can take hold in the lawns. Many towns and cities have ordinances requiring homeowners to keep their lawns manicured during certain times of the year, May being one of them. And we also have the fact that landscaping and lawnmowing businesses would see a drop in customers. Not everyone will want to have an unmanicured lawn, even for just a month. But we have to ask: is a little discomfort worth having more pollinators and a healthier landscape? That is a question that we must all answer for ourselves.

acqueline Mae Gordanier was and will always be a spectacular woman, with a beauty that shone from within. She was one of those rare people who found the best in everyone, and her love and generosity transcends personal relationships and generations. She was courageous and fierce in her love, quick to joy and laughter and welcomed everyone with huge smiles, big hugs and such cheerful affection it instantly put new-comers at ease. Everyone who knew her is warmed by the memory of her smile. The true number of people
touched by Jackie is immense and unknowable. Throughout her life she took in and loved so many as her own, showing kindness to everyone she met. Those that met her briefly were moved by her. She has inspired gratitude in those she never met as her love and joy have shaped us, nurtured us and continues to emanate through us. Our memories of Jackie are precious: her warm embraces; her lovely letters; the millions of pancakes and tuna melt sandwiches (infamous for generations to come); her joy in her garden; the rise and fall of her voice as she exclaims “Ooo-ooh” with delight. We may think these are all we have left of her, but Jackie’s gift continues to shine in this world through each of us that knew her, radiating out to influence those she will never meet. This is the beauty, the power, and the legacy of Jackie Gordanier. We love you, we miss you, we will always hold you dear. Jackie Gordanier is survived by a very big family indeed.

ette Goeres was born on February 29th, 1924 in Marshfield, Oregon (Coos Bay) to Lester and Ella Neal. Much of Bette’s youth was spent in the woods near Coos Bay and Gales Creek while her father worked in logging camps in those areas. She graduated from Forest Grove High School in 1943. After graduation she moved to Tillamook with her parents. There was plenty of work for her dad as the Tillamook Burn had plenty of timber to salvage. During WWII Bette worked in the Office at the Navy Lighter Than Air Base. There was no shortage of men to date at that time, but she found her lifelong love with Charles Goeres, a Marine. They were married on March 8th, 1947. She worked many different jobs but spent most of her career working for Ticor Title. She also volunteered at St. Alban’s and on the local election boards.
She was a very talented knitter and seamstress and made many of the clothing items her and Charles wore. Bette blessed many people with the gift of her hand knit gloves, socks, scarves, afghans and sweaters. Traveling to Palm Springs annually with Charles was one of the things Bette enjoyed. They also traveled much of the western US by car. She made several trips to Europe. She also spent time at the YMCA, where she broke a world record in the Concept II Ergometer for the 60-69 age division in 1970. Bette passed away on April 29th, 2022, with loved ones by her side. She was 98 years old, or as she put it 24 ½ as she was a leap year baby. Bette was a member of the Eastern Star, Tillamook Pioneer, Elks, St. Alban’s , Red Cross Donor and Sweet Adelines. The travels, competitions, and friends she made in that group, filled many of her warmest memories she shared with those around her in her later years. Bette had many poodles during her lifetime. She left behind a sweet miniature pinscher, Syndr. Bette was preceded in death by her husband Charles in 2012. She left behind many friends that loved her and will remember her stories, quick wit, and bright smile. There are no services at her request and will be laid to rest at the IOOF mausoleum next to Charles.

She grew up in Portland Oregon,where she graduated from Merycrest High School, and then moved to Tillamook Oregon, where she met Ronald E. Krake at the Tillamook county Fair. They were married on September 11th 1965 and were married for 56 years, and had two sons. She is survived by her husband: Ronald E. Krake, Son’s: Michael Todd and Timothy Joe Krake, Grandkids: Kayla Frerk and Gianna Marie Krake, Great- Grandkids Jonathan and Zachary Krake, Sister: Becky Coffman. A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 28, 2022 at the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in La Pine Oregon.

he oldest of three children and the first grandchild in her family, Melinda Ann Adams was born on April 15th, 1940, in Boli-

ver, MO, to Basil and Mary (Robertson) Adams. Melinda passed away from complications of Alzheimer’s disease, Friday, October 9th, 2015, at age 75, surrounded by family and several close friends. The only boy of three children, John David Faudskar was born on November 10, 1939, in Fort Dodge, IA, to Leonard and Marguerite (Streff) Faudskar. John passed away after a long battle with emphysema, COPD, and pneumonia, on Tuesday, May 11, 2021, at age 81, at home in the close care of his family. Throughout her childhood, Melinda and her family lived in Columbus, KA, as well as Boliver, Ava, and Springfield, MO. Melinda’s happiest childhood memories were times spent with her grandparents “in their big white house and their obvious love for each other and their grandchildren.” Her strong will, resilience, determination, and intelligence helped her endure a difficult childhood. Upon graduation from Parkview High School in 1958, Melinda attended Drury University in Springfield, MO. While there, she was an honor roll student and an enthusiastic, active member of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority where she made several life-long friends, and in 1961 was honored by being crowned “The White Rose” by the Sigma Nu Fraternity. Throughout his childhood, John and his family lived in Fort Dodge, IA, Fairbanks and Valdez, AK, and Springfield, MO. Fishing, hunting, trapping, and creating mischief were John’s favorite childhood pastimes. Even though they didn’t always have the luxury of modern conveniences such as indoor plumbing, refrigeration, or electricity while growing up in AK, his “memories of my adventures in AK have always been connected with home, happiness, and security.” Although disappointed about having to move from Alaska to Missouri when he was 12 as a result of his parents’ divorce, it was because of this relocation that John gained a devoted stepfather, Ross, half-sister Kathy, and eventually met Melinda.
Both John and Melinda attended Greenwood Summer School in Springfield, MO, in 1956. Melinda, to maintain her honor roll GPA and John, in hopes of improving his grades enough to graduate with his 1958 class from St. Agnes Catholic School, and to avoid being sent to reform school. It was during this summer school session they met when John attempted to cheat off of Melinda’s schoolwork. It soon became glaringly obvious to John that he would not be graduating with his high school class and since he shared a November 10th birthday with the United States Marine Corps, it seemed natural that he would enlist in the USMC. He was sworn in on his 17th birthday during a local evening news broadcast after being honored as a special guest at the 181st USMC Birthday Ball. Although he had very little discipline in his earlier years, John thrived on the structure, order, discipline, and camaraderie that the USMC provided. While on leave in January 1963 it was a surprise visit that John paid to Melinda that eventually led them to being married on July 20, 1963 at St. Agnes Cathedral in Springfield, MO. Together, they traveled to and lived in Catherine Lake, NC, Fairbanks, AK, and Gold Beach, Lebanon, Toledo, and Tillamook, OR. Melinda taught Language Arts while John, now a sergeant, finished his military service, worked for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, the Oregon State Game Commission, and received his BS and MS in Fishery Science from Oregon State University. Their daughter, Jessica Mary, was born in November of 1972. Melinda believed passionately in the value of equality, acceptance, tolerance, and the possibility there is good in everyone. These beliefs were evident in Melinda’s daily life and reflected in her subject matter while teaching Language Arts at Lebanon Union High School (19681972) and Tillamook High School (1983-2001). She was a well-respected member of the community known for her compassion, honesty, loyalty and fairness as a professional,
friend, wife, mother, and grandmother. Melinda will be remembered for her love of reading, music, and for her quick wit, dry sense of humor, vast knowledge of literature, and complete devotion to her family and students. During his career as a Sea Grant Marine Extension Agent, first in Newport, OR, and then in Tillamook, OR (1971-2002) he was wellknown for his comprehensive knowledge of the marine sciences, ability to lead by example, advocacy and support for the shellfish, fishing, and dairy industry, tenacity, wit, and candid disposition. John’s quiet benevolence, commitment, humility, and stoicism were an integral part of his personal and professional life. An admired member of the community, he will be remembered for his dependability, dry humor, gentle nature toward children and animals, and complete loyalty as a professional, friend, husband, father, and grandfather. Upon retirement in 2002, John was granted the title of Emeritus Professor of the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife. Their marriage of 52 years was a model of patience, support, respect, devotion, and an abundance of humor. John and Melinda are survived by their only child, Jessica M. Faudskar Hopkes; son-in-law Shad C. Hopkes; and their little prince, grandson Elijah John Faudskar Smith. At their request no service will be held. Jessica, Shad, and Eli suggest that you make a donation to either of two causes very important to John and Melinda—Tillamook Habitat for Humanity, and the Tillamook Animal Shelter. To commemorate John and Melinda, the family encourages you to dance with your partner, adopt a pet, read a book, go fishing, bring your kids with you, play an instrument, go to the party, take the trip, and keep laughing. orma Raelynne Hamblen was born on May 4, 1939, to Joseph R. Anderson and Lavira C. Anderson (Neilson) in a one room cabin in Emery, Utah. She passed away on April 1, 2022, at Portland Adventist Hospital from complications of heart and kidney disease. Norma was the second child and only daughter born to Joe and Lavira. Norma grew up in Utah and Weiser Idaho with her family of traveling sheep shearers. After graduating from Weiser High School, she married Lonnie LaVern Hale. They were married about three years, during which time, their son, Douglas was born. Norma moved to Eugene Oregon and became an Arthur

Norma met and married Richard (dick) Hamblen who brought three daughters (Sandra, Darcia, and Patricia) to the marriage. In 1962 the family became complete with the birth of their daughter Angelia. In 1967 the Hamblens moved to Tillamook. Norma was an AVON lady where she met many new people and made lifelong friends. She also worked for several local businesses in Tillamook including Mode O’ Day, Kitchen Ideas, Aherns jewelers, Pediatrician Dr. Dan Sparks, Home Health and Hospice, Curves for Women and most recently Dan Arthur, FNP as a trascriptionist. Norma was enormously proud that she worked until the age of 79, only retiring after a major stroke. Norma’s calling was ministry, and she was able to fulfill a life-long dream of owning the Cornerstone Christian bookstore. She was able to serve her community and lead people to the Lord through her knowledge of the written and spoken word from 1989 until she sold the business nine years later. Norma enjoyed doing needlepoint, cross stich, crochet and was an award-winning knitter. She created hundreds of one-of-a-kind pieces for family and friends. She was well-known by many. And her loss will be felt in the lo-

Support the library levy The Tillamook County Library has existed since 1907 and since 1983 its operations have been funded with tax levy. This levy supports a countywide system that operates and staffs a main library and five branches and a bookmobile that brings the library services to all citizens of the county, north, south and central and shut-ins as well. these services include books, (printed and audio), movies, music CDs, magazines, newspapers, public computers, online books and videos, community meeting rooms, study rooms, adult and children programs and other services. the list is endless. Since 2007, all of this has been funded with a tax levy of 65 cents per $1,000 of assessment. We taxpayers are being asked to renew this levy for the same amount for five more years. This is not an increase nor is it an unaffordable amount to support what is considered to be the finest library system in Oregon. For ourselves, this will cost us about $8 per month — a ver small price to pay for all of the goods and services we receive. Besides books and movies, we’ve used the community meeting rooms, public internet and computers. It would be a tragedy to lose all of this if a renewal of the levy is not approved. Closing the library is as inconceivable as closing the schools for lack of funding. All will agree that the library is an integral part of the entire system of education in the county. Vote Yes on Measure 29-161 After receiving a red, white & blue postcard from “A Just Right PAC” (adjust right) regarding Measure 29-161, I became a bit confused on the issue. I was ready to vote yes but they threw a bit of doubt into the equation. After viewing their website, contacting them via e-mail and rereading the measure, it seems that A Just Right is concerned about public safety, they are not about the 2nd Amendment or protecting our rights under the 2nd Amendment. Measure 29-161 prevents local, county, state and federal governments to impose more restrictions on our 2nd Amendment rights within Tillamook Co. It protects residents of Tillamook Co. from government overreach. The measure does not restrict law enforcement from enforcing current firearm laws already on the books. The residents that support this measure are pushing back, this is a peaceful protest on government overreach. Remember, the neighbor that owns a firearm may just be the first responder that helps you out when things go wrong and Law Enforcement is only 20 minutes away. Vote

Firearms are deadly serious I read two letters to the editor in the Headlight Herald (May 3rd issue) that encouraged voters to support ballot measure 29-161. One writer stated that if passed, this measure would apply only to future gun laws. I read the entire proposed ordinance top to bottom and never saw the term “future laws” mentioned. The proposed ordinance states that “No agent, employee, or official of Tillamook County, a political subdivision of the State of Oregon, while acting in their official capacity, shall knowingly and willingly participate in any way in the enforcement of any Extraterritorial Act” (“extraterritorial act” refers to a federal or state law). “Any” law does not mean only a future law. This ordinance, as written, would apply to all existing gun laws. The ordinance also proposes that officials violating 29-161 could have civil charges filed against them and possibly be fined. The other writer said that the nature of the proposed ordinance is “symbolic,” that if it passes, nothing will change. The ordinance is not symbolic, it is very specific. The writer himself says “state and federal laws – those viewed by gun owners as an encroachment upon their 2nd amendment rights under the U.S. constitution – will not be enforced by law enforcement.” It is not symbolism to say that federal and state laws would not be observed. It is not symbolism to threaten court cases and penalties, and it is not symbolism that the safety of law enforcement officers and community members could be jeopardized. Firearms are a deadly force. We need our law enforcement officials to act in accordance with our federal and state laws and not be dangerously distracted by the possibility of court cases or penalties - for their own safety and the safety of our community members. I encourage everyone to read the four-page proposed ordinance to understand the possible implications to our community. It can be found in its entirety on the Tillamook County Clerk’s webpage. enneth Duane Norman passed away peacefully in the early morning on Saturday, February 26, 2022, at the age of 92 from heart-related complications. Duane is survived by family and friends who loved him, including his wife, Roberta (Robbie), Kim and Mark Larson (daughter and son-in-law), Karl and Sara Norman (son and daughter-inlaw) and granddaughters Sofia, Claudia and Elisa. Duane was born on December 1, 1929 in Fort Collins, Colorado to Olof and Elvera Norman. The family lived on a Farm in Fort Collins until Duane was 14 years old, when they moved into town. He joined the Air Force after high school, serving four years and achieving the rank of Technical Sargent. He then attended Colorado A&M College graduating in 1956 with a Bachelor of Science in Game Management. He began working for the US Fish & Wildlife service as an intern in the summer of 1955, returning to full time employment in 1956. He moved every few years living in 6 states over the next 10 years, finally landing in Washington D.C. During that time, Duane earned his private pilot’s license and bought his own airplane. While in Washington D.C. he met his future wife, Roberta (Robbie) Furney. He made sure she could cook and didn’t get airsick before proposing. They got married on January 20, 1968. The newlyweds moved across the country to Portland, Oregon where they purchased a home, and started a family. Welcoming daughter, Kim, on their 1st Anniversary and son, Karl, 3 years later. Work had Duane traveling half the year. So, he sold the
airplane and bought a travel trailer, allowing the family to go with Duane during the summer as he followed the migratory birds. After retiring in 1983, Duane enjoyed spending more time with family and exploring the US in the travel trailer during summer trips. The family visited more than half the US states on their summer travels. He also had more time for his woodworking hobby and built a second home on their property at the Oregon coast. In 1990, with the kids both in college, Duane and Robbie relocated to their second home in Rockaway Beach, Oregon. They quickly became active in their new community and enjoyed entertaining family and friends. They upgraded to a motorhome and continued to travel around the country. Enjoying trips with friends the Hansons and Bartoneks. Eventually they began acting as camp hosts in state parks across Oregon and Washington several times a year. Over the years their travels would take them to visit both Kim and Mark in Washington and Karl and Sara in London, Madrid and San Diego. In 2016, after 26 years in Rockaway (the longest Duane ever lived in one place), Duane and Robbie moved back to Portland, Oregon and joined the Cherrywood Village Retirement Community. They quickly got involved in the activities at Cherrywood and made many new friends. Duane enjoyed learning how to Wii-bowl and regularly bowled 200+ games. He also enjoyed his weekly pinochle game, monthly men’s lunches, theater nights and other events. Duane had an active life, and will be greatly missed. A memorial service will be held at 1 pm on Saturday, May 14, 2022 at St. John’s Church in Tillamook, Oregon. He will be interned at Willamette National Cemetery in a private ceremony. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation be made in Duane’s name to the Cancer Research Institute.
Harold ‘Kenny Randall’ Aug. 20, 1963 - March 22, 2022
H
arold “Kenny Randall” was born on August 20, 1963 to Robert and Bernice Randall and lived his entire life in Tillamook. He had eight siblings. On March 22 Kenny passed away from cancer. As a youngster Kenny moved in with the Irene and Clarence Hatfield family where he stayed until he was 18 years old. Kenny became involved with Marie Mills Center in 1985 making quite an impression on everyone and making many lifelong friends. He was everybody’s favorite. With time Kenny moved into his own apartment in the Marie Mills Center Supported Living Program where he did quite well for himself. Kenny had many passions in his life. Among them included coloring posters, putting together model planes and cars, working on jigsaw puzzles, and many other things including spending time with his girlfriend Jodi Cecil. Perhaps his favorite activity was donating dog beds and food to the
Tillamook Animal Shelter for whom he had a real passion. He also loved to feed the birds. Kenny was a regular at all Marie Mills Center social events and enjoyed them immensely. He loved going on outings and spending time with his family over the holidays. He had much love for his extended family and would often get emotional when he talked about them. He also loved to do Snapchat visits with friends and others involved in his life. If Kenny was your friend, you definitely knew you had a friend for life. What most remember about him was his funny and sneaky sense of humor that would often begin with a wry smile. When he did that you knew something was up. Kenny was a sentimental and caring person often giving people special to him small gifts such as a card or one of his paintings, and sometimes even a picture of himself. Kenny had a smile on his face at all times and would never complain about anything. He was a very hard worker having worked on janitorial crews, working at Tillamook Family Counseling Center, and working at the Tillamook Country Smoker over the years. He will be missed by many but will always be with them because he touched their lives in such a special way. Kenny’s smile is something that we will all remember forever! Those who wish are encouraged to make a donation in Kenny’s memory to the Tillamook County Animal Shelter.
Act charges. Go check out his record on the Tillamook County Circuit Court public computer in the courthouse. His record, and the pattern of abusive behavior in it, speak for themselves. When asked about his criminal history at the Pacific City candidates forum, Graydon answered as if he’s only been in trouble once. He seemed to be referring to the time in 2015 that he hit the mother of his child with a vehicle, while the child was in the vehicle, for which he was convicted of two counts of recklessly endangering another person, one count each for the victim and the child. Describing this incident in the Pacific City forum, Graydon blamed the victim, said he was falsely accused, said the court was wrong and he’s going to get his record expunged. Hallock admitted that he was sentenced to 24 months of probation on two counts of recklessly endangering another person, and that prior to that, he had been subject to the conditions of a security release agreement. He admitted that he served 45 days in the Tillamook County Jail and was given credit for time served. He also admitted that he was ordered to complete a batterer’s intervention program and a 12-week nurturing parent class. A month after that judgment, an arraignment

We need to bring back farm visits for students I would love to see it get started again. Children were able to see cows up close, learn how they were fed and all of the work that was done by local farmers. Most of the children thought milk originated in the local store. We learned how to make cheese, butter and other dairy products. It was a great lesson. I took kids out to visit local farmers like Bub Boquist, Fritz Vermilyea and we visited the Hogan farm. The children at Pacific Christian School are ready again to do visits and learn the local culture. The “take off’ would include other business who would be able to set up a booth where kids could ask questions and examine products. an example I like is that I am not a fisherman. But if a person were to have a boat and equipment and tell some stories, I might just go on a fishing adventure. this could apply to any business. The Shooting of Our Cat Penny
In year 1974, my wife and I were newlyweds station in Thurmont, MD, I was a US Marine. Back then we found our first cat in a parking lot and the first few years living here in Tillamook, when we got a new dog and kitten it was not a big thing to get them spayed or neutered, or even keeping them up to date on their shots. During those years it was very common for us to have kittens and puppies in our home. Now 2022, raising a new pet is a lot different. First thing we do as soon as there old enough is we get them fixed to prevent them from having a litter of kittens or puppies, we also keep them updated on all their shoots. Having a pet is a 12 to 19 years investment starting with getting them fix, shots, and the one that I feel is the most expensive is just giving them flea medicine every month. Penny is a new cat replacing our 19 year old cat Dot, that passed this winter. Penny is less than a year old, she is a pretty calico cat that was shot, by a .22, on Tuesday 05/03/2022, our cat was shot in a neighborhood with lots of children, off of Brickyard Rd, we have no reason to know why somebody would have shot her, she was a farm kitten and it is very hard to keep her in the house fulltime. We are very thankful of Tillamook Pioneer Veterinary Hospital and specially Dr. Mark Witt, DVM and his team that were able to see her immediately the next morning and saved Penny life. So far this was a cost of $1,200.00 that we were happy to pay to keep her alive. The bullet enter her front left leg and traveled up to where it hit her shoulder blade and exploded, The Dr. was able to get most of the metal fragmentation out but some still remain. It will be a few week before we will know if her leg will be needed to be amputated. People please keep your pet records current and thank a vet that saves your pets life. Rick Stelzig Tillamook
TLT has tilted priorities In the article, “TLT supports projects totaling $890k” (April 26, 2022), County Commissioners boasted of the generous support provided to our “community” with money
collected from the transient lodging tax (TLT), and the awards given to several projects promoting tourism. Has anyone informed the Tillamook Commissioners that this county is in the middle of a housing crisis? Oh, wait. They’re aware of it. In fact, every few months an article comes out wherein the County expresses their concerns about the housing shortage, with assurances that they’re doing everything within their power to address the situation before it becomes desperate; seemingly oblivious to the fact that for far too many local residents, the situation already is desperate – or that, for our community, its impacts may soon become catastrophic. Contributing significantly to the decreasing availability of affordable housing is the ever increasing proportion of houses, condos, etc. converted into “vacation rentals”, and the revenue they provide. For anyone who is not familiar with the “transient lodging tax” (TLT), it is a tax collected by our State, County and City municipalities on income derived from all “short term” (aka “vacation”) rentals. Currently Oregon collects a 1.5% tax, Tillamook County collects 1% to 10%, and Rockaway (eg.) collects 10% (and considering an increase). The conflict of interest is blatant. While local workers and residents struggle to maintain a roof over their head, “Vacation Rental” rental conglomerates realize exponential growth in their portfolios and in shareholder profits. Like hungry predators they gobble up homes, only to regurgitate them as vacation rental properties; rented out at exorbitant rates. The larger the proportion of local real estate they own, the more power they have to control market pricing and legislative policy. Why has this escalated out of control? Because the transient lodging tax provides our local governments with a steady stream of “easy money”. The transient lodging tax is simply collected from the net income generated by these rentals. The TLT is just so darn profitable. This same revenue, however, provides a distinct disincentive for enacting policy to curb the industry’s unchecked growth, or assess the negative impacts it has upon our communities. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not against tourism. We have a tourist-based economy, and that requires some degree of reinvestment to insure its vitality. Yet, while I’m certain

that the funding recipients are worthy – these projects do not address the most urgent needs of our community. Pardon me Commissioners, but next year, while deciding where to spend this rather substantial pool of cash – consider how far $890k could go toward helping local residents have a place to call home; or reflect upon where your tourism industry will be when all of our grocery clerks, bartenders, lifeguards, and the other workers/residents of our “community” have been forced to leave because they have nowhere to live. Better yet, go visit Portland for a day, and take a look at what happens when residential housing becomes a neglected priority. Donna Miller Rockaway Beach
I’m voting for Mary Faith Bell I have only known Mary Faith Bell since 2018, but her high moral character immediately impressed me. She has proven herself to be a person of high integrity and of sound moral judgement, passionate about our community and all her constituents. I became acquainted with her through service projects and I saw someone who is clearly guided by her heart and a true desire to help others. She radiates kindness and love towards all she encounters. In times like these, post pandemic and volatile divisiveness, when emotions run high and incendiary language is heard out of community leaders, Mary Faith has focused on what matters: our community. She has demonstrated clarity on the issues facing our community (supporting businesses, nonprofits and institutions such as the Tillamook County Fair in their financial recovery, working on getting broadband to every home, making sure the County receives all its federal funding to improve infrastructure, strengthening emergency preparedness efforts in the coastal communities, dredging beneath the Memaloose boat launch to provide for safe launching in salmon season, celebrating the completion of the new Cape Meares Loop Road),and respect for all our community members. She has maintained balanced and focused when others have not. Her principled leadership gained my support early on, and she hasn’t disappointed

We need to support our library levy The North Tillamook Library in Manzanita is one of the beauties of the area that first attracted us to Manzanita. Years later when I retired, I made my first volunteer commitment to the library. Libraries are the heart and soul of communities and are reflective of the community they serve. Our Library serves the three villages and the surrounding rural area in north County. It makes available books, movies, free wifi, computer and printer access, assistance in finding resources, the next great read and the use of free community space and programs. With your free library card, you have access to digital books, movies, magazines, out reach programs and the Bookmobile. It continued to safely provide these services during COVID restrictions. The library system in Tillamook County receives 95% of its operating support from a 5-year levy which expires June 2022. Measure 29-164, on the May Ballot, will renew the operating levy for another 5 years. The current rate of 65 cents per $1,000 assessed value will be the same for the next 5 years. The libraries are a widely recognized asset by the people who live here. Failure of the levy will mean the loss of libraries and the programs they provide. Programs such as literacy for preschoolers, summer reading activities designed to sustain readers between school years and online homework and tutoring services. The bookmobile brings books to residents of nursing homes and rural families. Libraries provide resources for job-seekers including access to computers, assistance and instruction for seeking employment. I urge you to join me in voting Yes for Libraries by voting yes for Measure 29164, keep open our library in Manzanita, as well as those in Rockaway Beach, Garibaldi, Bay City, Pacific City and Tillamook. Tillamook eyes playoffs with games this week at home, one road match Mike Weber For the Herald After winning five of their last six games, the No. 12 ranked Tillamook High Cheesemakers have some momentum as they prepare to compete in the OSAA Class 4A baseball state playoffs for the first time since 2013. The Mooks, guided by Coach Matt Strang, won 9-3 May 4 at home over the Seaside/Jewell High Seagulls (1-7 league, 6-10), followed by a 5-4 win at Seaside May 7 to improve their Cowapa League record to 6-1 and 7-7 overall. It marked the fifth consecutive league win for Tillmook, which lost a nonleague home game 6-4 to the Taft High Tigers May 3. “This was a huge week for us as we had a nonleague game against Taft on Tuesday, then we jumped right back into league play on Wednesday against Seaside,” said Strang. “Parker Mckib-
bin got the start on the mound and we know we can pretty much beat anybody when he is pitching.” On Saturday at Seaside, Tillamook scored five runs in the first inning to gain control on the scoreboard. Tillamook senior pitcher Junior Gonzalez had an outstanding game on the mound as he three a three-hitter with 10 and he allowed just two earned runs. On Wednesday at home versus Seaside, it close through the first four innings with a 1-1 deadlock. Tillamook gained momentum in the fifth as Melvin Ramos and Garrison Gunder hit consecutive singles, followed by a Cade Ross walk to load the bases. Junior Parker McKibbin hit an RBI single, scoring Ramos, loading the bases again. Bryce Hamerl then drew a bases loaded walk to plate another Mooks run making it 3-1. Then the Mooks really took control as junior Trevor
Leonning hit a grand slam over the center field fence for a 7-1 margin. Tillamook added two more runs in the fifth for a 9-1 advantage. With three games remaining on the Cowapa League schedule, Tillamook is sitting comfortably in second place in the five-team conference with a 6-1 record and 7-7 overall. The Mooks trail the first place No. 2 ranked Banks High Braves (8-0 league, 16-2). The Valley Catholic High Valiants (3-5 league, 8-9) are in third place. The top two Cowapa teams qualify for the playoffs beginning May 22. Tillmook plays its next contest at home Wednesday at 5 p.m. versus Banks, followed by a 5 p.m. home game against Valley Catholic. The Mooks conclude the regular season with a 5 p.m. contest versus the Valiants at Valley Catholic High School in Beaverton.

Girls Golf Tillamook High Senior, Lexie Braxling, was named to the Class 4A-3A-2A-1A District 1 All-Regional Team based on her performance at the district meet this past week. This was a two day event at Quail Valley Golf Course in Banks, Oregon. Braxling earned this recognition by finishing with a top 10 performance covering both days. Tillamook High Sophomore, Lexie Graves, was named to the Class 4A-3A-2A-1A District 1 2nd team All-Regional based on her performance at the district meet this past week. Have a young runner? Each summer Ultimook Track Club facilitates a youth summer running program for Tillamook-area athletes. “Our mission is to develop young runners in both mind and body. Young runners require a fun, supportive environment to aid in aerobic development,” Ultimook Youth Director Chelsea Yarnell said. The Ultimook Youth Track Club is a running club designed for athletes entering Kindergarten-eighth grades. “Last year we had over 70 athletes that participated in
this team and the leadership of Gitchell and Lee. It’s been a huge commitment to travel daily to Banks and Manzanita to play since we don’t have a local course but these kids just continue to improve daily. I’m really looking forward to this group getting a chance to compete in the state tournament” Elliot Lee is something special to watch on a golf course and it’s really special that his team gets to come along

Budget Committee meeting will be held to review the proposed budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2022 and ending June 30, 2023, to discuss and approve the proposed budget document. This is a public meeting where deliberation of the NWSDS Budget Committee will take place. Any persons may attend to discuss the proposed programs with the Budget Committee.
