COVID-19 cases slowly decreasing County remains in High Risk

illamook County remains in ‘High Risk,’ effective Friday, April 23. Risk level changes will be made a week earlier due to increasing cases and hospitalizations in Oregon. County data will be evaluated Tuesday, April 27, and risk level changes, if necessary, will take place Friday, April 30. Tillamook County Health Department is currently monitoring 24 people. “Half of Oregon counties are also at High Risk,” Tillamook County Community Health Centers Administrator Marlene Putman said during a community update April 23. “We’re keeping an eye on it closely. We have seen a slight decrease in our COVID-19 cases in Tillamook County.”
Putman said people should continue to wear face masks, wash hands frequently and keep 6 feet of distance from those not in your household. If you choose to get vaccinated, do so soon, she added. Adventist Health Tillamook President Eric Swanson said there are 283 COVID-19 hospitalizations across Oregon, as of April 23. In Region 1 hospitals – Tillamook, Clatsop, Clackamas, Columbia, Multnomah and Washington counties – there are 50 adult ICU beds available. “One person is currently hospitalized,” Putman said of Tillamook County residents. “There were two this week but one currently hospitalized.” For vaccines, 964 primary doses were provided this week, Putman said, with 10,932 people having received at least one dose of
the vaccine, as of Thursday, April 22, and 27 percent of residents have received both doses and are considered fully vaccinated. “All Oregonians aged 16 and older who would like a vaccine can schedule an appointment,” Putman said. “We have plenty of appointments available in Tillamook County.” Pfizer, the only vaccine authorized for those younger than 18 years old, is not yet available in Tillamook County. The health department is working with vaccine partners, Adventist Health and the school districts to make Pfizer available for those 16 and older soon. The shot will be given in your shoulder, so you may want to wear short sleeves, Putman said. You will receive a vaccination card for your second dose. “You’re not required to show identification or give your social security number at
the site,” Putman said. “If you have health insurance, you may be asked to fill it out on a scheduling tool like ours.” Putman said health insurances may be billed a fee for the administration of the vaccine, but this will not impact copays or deductibles on your health insurance. Some sites may ask to see your social security card for Medicare purposes as well but you do not have to show it. estucca Valley School District is weeks away from finishing construction on its new K-8 campus, located at the school district office and elementary school site. In 2018, voters in the South Tillamook County Nestucca Valley School District approved a $25.7 million General Obligation Bond. The bond was passed with the premise of the seventh and eighth graders being moved from the junior senior high school down to a K-8 campus. The school district also received an Oregon Capital Improvement Grant of $4 million in May 2018. Superintendent Misty Wharton said renovations have been made
on the existing buildings. The completion was originally slated for August. The bond includes constructing an addition to the elementary facilities to increase capacity for the K-8 campus. The construction of the K-8 campus includes a new cafeteria, commons, classrooms, regulationsize gymnasium, parking, playground and other improvements. The facilities may serve as an emergency shelter for area residents in the case of a natural disaster. The bond also includes renovating the existing elementary facilities plumbing, electrical, windows and more. Construction began in the spring of 2019 after almost a full calendar year in the planning process, Wharton said.
“We’ve added 6-8th grade classrooms, two career technical education labs, a new special education suite, a new double gymnasium, updated and completely renovated the water system, all new safety and security measures, plumbing, electrical, all new in the existing school,” Wharton said. Wharton said the existing school was torn down to the studs and built back up. The school was also moved from a boiler system to a heat pump and cooling system. All classrooms have new furniture. “Basically the bones of our existing school that was built in the 1950s, the structure itself was great,” Wharton said. “It was all
the other stuff that needed to be updated.” Now that the major updates are complete, finishing touches are being made, including sanding and finishing the new gymnasium floor and waiting on lights for the commons. Landscape is also starting to take shape. “We’re on budget, ahead of schedule and thankfully, we’ll have enough money left that we’ve started to plan for a new shop facility at the high school, which will have a welding shop, a wood shop, and basically what’s called wet sciences or agricultural sciences,” Wharton said. Wharton said another project this summer includes a PE/recess field behind the K-8 building. This will include a soccer field and a softball diamond. “It’s a facility that our community will be able to live and grow in for years and years,” Wharton said. “Thank you, voters.” Send comments to: headlightreporter@countrymedia.net

Tillamook County Health Department reports a slight decrease in COVID-19 cases, with 49 positive and presumptive cases from Sunday, April 4, through Saturday, April 17. Administrator Marlene Putman reported during a Tillamook County Board of Commissioners meeting Wednesday, April 21, that the county had eight positive COVID-19 cases over the weekend and two during the week up until April 21. The county has had a total of 25 COVID-19 hospitalizations and three COVID-19 related deaths. “As of April 20, 10,507 people have received at least one dose, which is 40 percent of county residents and 6,690 people are considered fully vaccinated,” Putman said regarding vaccines. As of Tuesday, April 20, 10,507 Tillamook County citizens have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, Putman said. As of Monday, April 19, all Oregonians 16 and older can schedule an appointment for a vaccine. The health department and vaccine partners are working on providing access for 16 and 17 year olds to receive the Pfizer vaccine, as it is not available in Tillamook County at this time. “Other appointments are still available,” Putman said. “You can schedule online.” Some citizens have canceled their appointments if they receive a vaccine elsewhere, opening spots for others to receive the vaccine, so people who want a vaccine soon should keep an eye on the online scheduling tool. “Vaccines are free,” Putman said. “We receive the vaccine itself free and so do the people that we give those shots in the arms to.” Putman said no insurance, social security number or immigration status is needed for the COVID-19 vaccine and everyone is eligible. The reason people are asked for insurance information is because the cost of administering the vaccine can be billed to insurance providers. People on Medicare may be asked to provide a social security number, if they are willing, to verify they have Medicare, as Medicare can be billed for the administration of the vaccine as well. “People who are on Medicare may be asked to provide their social security number, if they are willing, to verify that they have Medicare,”

I am running to continue the success of all of the
services NCRD offers that directly impacts my family’s future and those families in our area. My hope is to improve transparency throughout the community. I am also committed to fulfill the promise of building the new pool facility. What experience/skills do you have that makes you the best candidate? I had the benefit of growing up learning to swim at NCRD’s pool, participating in children’s theater in the auditorium (PAC) and social-
izing at the youth teen center. NCRD influence continued into my adult life by becoming a volunteer in the fitness center, playing softball at Rex Champ Field and sending my son to New Discoveries preschool. I still swim regularly in the pool and utilize it for water rescue training as a member of Nehalem Bay Fire & Rescue. I was appointed to the NCRD budget committee in 2018, and in 2019 I was appointed to the board of directors when a mid-term vacancy came open. I believe
my extensive involvement with NCRD throughout my life illustrates my unique qualification for a position on the NCRD Board of Directors. What is the district’s biggest challenge and how will you overcome it? I think the most consequential challenge for NCRD is hiring the next executive director to lead NCRD forward. This will take place before the upcoming election, however, it will set the stage for everything from this point
forward. I would consider the construction of the new pool facility being the biggest challenge for NCRD. The pool must be built with financial sustainability and operational longevity as the top priorities. The District is currently and will continue to be challenged with the growth of the community. We need to ensure that NCRD is accountable, transparent and accessible by all who wish to participate in the many services offered by the District.
Family: My wife Anne and I live in Nehalem. Why are you running for North County Recreation District Director, position 4? In addition to the normal district operations the North County Recreation District now has an opportunity and a challenge. Last November voters approved a bond with a 57% yes vote to build a new public pool replacing the current 90- year-old pool. Many know the pool is often closed for repairs, it is closed now due to the failure of antiquated equipment. With the retirement of former Executive Director David Wiegan NCRD is undergoing a search
for a new E.D.; this plus managing the construction of the $9 million+ new pool. NCRD has a knowledgeable acting Executive Director in Barbara McCann, NCRD Aquatics Director. The district is blessed with a group of dedicated and capable employees. I bring a combination of experience as a past Board member with multi-million-dollar budgets and working on large projects. As a member of a team, I will help NCRD successfully complete the pool construction within budget and on time. What experience/skills do you have that makes you the best candidate? Some may know until re-
cently I was an elected NCRD Board member. Due to an out-of-town job opportunity, I regretfully resigned from the Board in July 2019. With the advent of the Covid-19 pandemic that job went away. I hope to again serve the community I cherish, contributing as an active NCRD Board member. I have always said my goal was to see the greatest possible number of people benefit and use district facilities. I believe we never know who may have the next good idea so we must always listen. An organization is only as good as the people who comprise it. To this end to better recruit and retain good employees I proposed NCRD
adopt an employee retirement program where previously we had none. NCRD did successfully implement a retirement program. To better inform the people of NCRD programs and opportunities, I proposed the district put out a quarterly newsletter. We did this electronically, saving money on postage and paper. If anyone remembers the old NCRD website, for years I promoted adopting a new, easier-to-use district website. The new website is improved over the old site. With years of NCRD Board experience working with multi-million-dollar budgets and as a member and past Chair of the NCRD Capital
Improvement Committee I have the knowledge and experience to help bring the new pool project in within budget and on time. What is the district’s biggest challenge and how will you overcome it? I hope to see NCRD find new ways to better serve all the people of the district. As an example, the current skateboard ramp will be demolished to make room for the new pool. I will suggest ways within the current budget to plan, with the input and ideas of skateboarders, for a new ramp serving the many who use it. I ask for your vote.

We now have a Fitness Center, Ball Field, Pickle Ball Court, Children’s Day Care Center, a Performing Arts Center (with a new lobby and ADA restrooms) and soon a new pool that meet all ADA standards. Tillamook to celebrate Public Service Recognition Week Hilary Dorsey Staff Writer
Tillamook City Council, during a meeting Monday, April 19, declared the week of May 2-8 as Public Service Recognition Week. The city of Tillamook will host a Touch-a-Truck event from 4-6 p.m. Tuesday, May 4, at city hall, 210 Laurel Ave. The celebration will include various public service entities. Mayor Aaron Burris read aloud the proclamation, which states many public servants, including military personnel, police officers, firefighters, border patrol officers, health care professionals and more, risk their lives every day to serve people. Public servants include teachers, doctors, scientists, train conductors, astronauts and more. “Day in and day out, they provide diverse services demanded by the American people of their government with efficiency and integrity,” Burris read. “Without these public servants at every level, continuity would be impossible in a democracy that
regularly changes its leaders and elected officials.” Burris said a lot of these public servants are volunteers, such as various fire departments throughout the county, as well as some sheriff’s deputies and search and rescue. “There will be various trucks and other equipment for the city’s residents to come see, touch and climb aboard, as well as to meet and talk with the people that make it all happen,” Councilor Rebekah Hopkins said of the Touch-a-Truck event. “COVID-19 precautions will
be in effect.” All citizens are invited to bring their families and friends to celebrate public service. I found out when visiting with Arla that she and her husband, Brad, attended the Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival in Woodburn, Ore., on April 15. The couple was celebrating their 59th wedding anniversary that day; congratulations to them! The festival features 40 acres of tulips in 100 acres of outdoor space, and it runs through May 2. and multi-colored tulips. It was the perfect way for these longtime lovebirds to mark their special occasion. Rod Pelson invited Charles Ansorge to go musseling at the south end of Cape Meares beach. Rod has been adventuring outdoors here since the 1970s; he’s a good teacher. However, what neither of them planned on was a rock falling off the cliff and hitting Charles on the noggin! Although he saw stars, Charles was not seriously injured, and he and Rod continued with their shellfish gathering. Good thing, too, because later that day, Rod and his wife, Mary Jane, fixed

Club met for April via video conference last week. Besides me, attendees included Melanie Merryman, Madlen Silkwood, Nancy Whitehead and Joan Wilke. Nancy led our discussion of “The Lying Life of Adults” by Elena Ferrante. While all agreed that is was superbly written, some in the group were put off by frequent vulgarity. The novel follows a thirteen-year-old girl, the only child of parents who divorce, into her seventeenth year. Those who listened to the audio book were consistently taken with its depiction of “higher” and “lower” caste speech in the performance of dialect. I recommend the
page turner as a captivating coming of age summer read, for adults. There are five openings as we go to press in a free online suicide prevention training. Thanks to Janeane Krongos for word that Tillamook Family Counseling Center will offer the course from 1011:30 a.m. on Friday, May 14. This “QPR Gatekeeper training” is a community mental health intervention that was listed on a National Registry of Evidence Based Programs and Practices as effective in preventing suicide. Beach Parks and Recreation Department, which was hugely successful for many years. She worked side by side with the department for 18 years and changed many children’s lives. She did so much more for our community. Shqortly after she passed away in 2012, the community recognized her by naming the city park after her. Louise and Skip Haley met us at the amphitheater in Sis-
ters, Oregon, last week. What a nice visit. The weather was sunny and warm with a light breeze. We talked for almost four hours. It sure is nice to meet up with friends! “In the spring, at the end of the day, you should smell like dirt!” Just remember if you fertilize, you are sharing that wonderful smell with all of your neighbors. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Dial a Ride services needed in South County This letter is written by Larry Stephens with Pat Patterson regarding the need for providing Dial a Ride services in South County for those seniors such as Pat who is 97 years old who has been greatly missing dial a ride since it has been reduced drastically over the past several years. It is also a letter to support two candidates who are running for election or reelection to Tillamook Co Transportation District who are dedicated to enhancing the services for
Pat and others in similar situations. A formal letter to the TCTD Board has been sent by Larry Stephens addressing this very urgent need on behalf of Pat and others. Pat Patterson was one of the original elected Board Members of TCTD from its inception to the year 2005, who was one of the early “Friends of the Wave” who helped to form and establish the Tillamook County Transportaton District .It was started after a property tax was passed for it to become a stand-alone agency to serve the needs of citizens. This was especially important for the seniors and disabled who did not have their own mode of transpor-
tation available. As Pat had made contact with Mary Johnson with Larry to endorse her candidacy she agreed to meet him next to the Sandlake Store where Pat loves to have coffee with friends, and also where he donated an authentic Chinook Totem Pole that would soon be erected and installed at that location. They took a photo together for Mary’s campaign as he enthusiastically wanted to endorse her for Position 5 for the TCTD Board and he knew she would be willing to support enhanced transportation services to South County.

he rhythmic clanging of shovels mixed with the ting of rain on a tin hardhat is the opening tune to most cold winter days planting trees. It is one of the toughest and most rewarding parts of working as a forester. I would argue it is one of the most crucial parts of sustainable forestry as well. Reforestation allows our society to continually harvest and regrow a supply of timber while maintaining a healthy environment. With Arbor Day right around the corner, I thought I’d share a little bit about my experience with tree planting. As a forester for Stimson

uring the recent sunny spring days, Tillamook has gone into full bloom. Flowering trees have burst into white and pink petals, and tulips and daisies blossomed to decorate flower beds all across town. And here at the Chamber, we hope to elevate all that natural spring beauty with a bit of our own work during Downtown Cleanup! This event brings volunteers together to share their love for downtown by cleaning and de-weeding sidewalks and washing signs and fences. Groups of two to three volunteers will spread out to clean out the brick pavers, blow away old leaves and pick up garbage to keep downtown attractive and appealing for local and visitors alike! North Coast Lawn graciously lends us all the equipment we need to make sidewalks and storefronts shine. And Dutch Mill provides lunch for all our volunteers to help us show how much we appreciate your help in keeping downtown beautiful! We’ve even got the cutest work gloves for children, so your kiddos can jump in to volunteer, too! Downtown Cleanup is a great way to give back to the community, and I always

While the Chamber’s Downtown Cleanup focuses on five blocks along Main Street and Pacific, there also will be a number of other community events to spruce up other areas of town – and even your own households. We like to view it as a total spring cleaning for Tillamook! TLC Fibre Federal Credit Union is hosting a free Shred Day when they will shred up to three boxes of documents per person to help prevent identity theft. The County will hold its monthly Hazardous Household Waste collection, so you can dispose of common household hazardous items, such as aerosol cans of spray paint, batteries, or mercury-containing items like some lightbulbs. There also will be a large dumpster stationed on the corner of Third and Ivy for residents to drop off their yard debris for disposal all weekend! As we move into spring and summer and community events like June Dairy Parade get closer, now is the perfect time to clean up our homes and spruce up our city! Help us welcome the nice weather and blooming flowers by signing up for Downtown Cleanup and participating in other Chamber membersponsored events.

Lumber, I find people are often surprised that we plant trees in winter. It’s cold and wet on the Oregon Coast, which can be unpleasant but in winter trees are dormant and thus resist the stresses of planting much better than when they are busy growing. Cold, wet weather also helps to keep seedling roots moist during planting. Exposed roots in warm, dry weather can kill a seedling within minutes. This why our planting season usually runs between December and April and we keep a close eye on the weather. The number of trees we plant varies year to year. This year our company will plant over 1 million seedlings in Oregon. We start planning a reforestation project years in advance. Two years before planting, we acquire seed and contract with a nursery to produce baby trees. Seedlings are selected and nurtured to match a specific site so they can be as successful as possible. This includes matching tree species, physical features, and even genetics. Every year we plant mixtures of western hemlock, Sitka spruce, western red cedar, noble fir, and Douglas fir. Planting trees is tough work. The rough terrain makes machine planting impossible so all planting is done by hand. It is amazing

As Pat shared more about not wanting to be housebound every day, he

During planting season, foresters like me spend most our days working with the contract crews in the field ensuring the trees are planted to an acceptable standard of quality and in accordance with our reforestation plans. We take measurement plots behind the planters, monitor spacing, and sample root placement. Our target planting density for the coastal zone is 440 trees per acre, which is about a 10ft x 10ft spacing. Root placement critically important. It can be the difference between a healthy tree and a dead one. If you’re a landowner interested in reforesting a portion of your land, I encourage you to check out the “Guide to Reforestation in Oregon” by Robin Rose and Diane Haase on the Oregon Department of Forestry’s web site https://www.oregon. gov/odf/working/pages/replanting.aspx. You can also reach out to your local OSU forestry extension office. Growing and nurturing trees is something I enjoy and take pride in. Watching young trees become a forest over the years is truly rewarding and makes the cold, wet days planting trees worth it.

temps are 60 or so. For tomatoes, the optimum air temps should be between 60 and 80, and for peppers and cucumbers growth is best at air temps between 70 and 80. Tomatoes do best when night temps hover around 60 to 65 degrees. That allows the plants to set fruit for ripening. For a longer harvest of all these plants, try planting several varieties that have different ripening dates. These dates can generally be found on seed packets, in seed catalogs and sometimes on the tags of the starts. Every single garden has its own microclimate which will dictate when best to plant out vegetables. We can see this each spring when rhododendrons in neighboring gardens will be blooming at different times, even if they are the same species. Thus, also important for vegetable success is the number of Growing Degree Days (GDD). This, basically, is the measure of average heat accumulations. There are some intricate formulas, but Washington State University came up with an easier way to measure. Take the average daily temperatures (Fahrenheit) for a series of days. The longer the time period, the more accurate the measurements will be. Then subtract 50 from that average daily temperature. (If the answer is less than zero, then the GDD is zero, thus the GDD is always a positive number.) Knowing what your GDD is for your garden will not only be helpful when selecting plants, it will help you to know when to plant them for optimal

We have known and worked with Becky for most of her life, and are extremely excited and supportive of her interest in this important work. Over the years, we watched her grow up and watched her be successful at everything she set her mind to accomplish. Becky is very community minded and believes in education and serving others. She is thoughtful, considerate, a great listener, and has the skills to work through processes in the public arena. Recently, I was about five miles in to a hike at Sitka Sedge State Natural Area along Sand Lake Road, deep in thought about a problem that was occupying my mind. As I passed through one stretch of trail with pine trees on each side of me, something caught my eye. There was a little clear test-tube-sized glass bottle hanging high on a branch. It was about the size and circumference of my pinky finger, so it was not an easy thing to spot...and that just added to the mystery of it all. There was a cork in the top of the bottle and a string attached to that so that it hung inconspicuously from the tree. Upon closer inspection, I could see there was a tiny note rolled up inside. Curiosity got the best of me, so I reached up and took the bottle down from the branch. My mind raced and puzzled about what the message inside could possibly want to tell me. I smiled a great big grateful smile, rolled the note back up, put it back in the bottle, and hung it back on the tree so that it could bless someone else. I don’t know about you, but a little act like that was all that it took to turn my worries upside-down for the rest of the day. Whoever left that message in a bottle for me to find went to a lot of work to add some joy to my day. Clayton Zoram Rees Oct. 3, 1940 - April 12, 2021
layton Zoram Rees was born October 3, 1940 in Prescott, Arizona to Alvin and Bunola (White) Rees and passed away April 12, 2021 in Beaver, Oregon at the age of 80. Clayton served in the United State Marine Corps during VietNam and was honorably discharged. Following his military service, Clayton graduated from Portland Community College with an Associate Degree in Business and Accounting. He was an honors graduate at Portland State University earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology in 1970. Clayton received his Masters degree of Science in Rehabilitation Counseling from Western Oregon University in 2004. From 2005 to 2015 he held the position of adjunct faculty at WOU and served on the WOU College of Education, Curriculum Advisory Committee. Clayton has a long history
of working with, developing and managing programs for young people with disabilities. In 1984 he began his career as a private vocational counselor and business consultant. In 1996 he was employed by the State of Oregon to work with people with disabilities and working with local school districts assisting youth with disabilities in Tillamook, Astoria, and Hillsboro. In 2001 Clayton became a Program Manager for the State of Oregon, Office of Vocational Rehabilitation for the Career Workforce Skills Training Program in five Oregon community colleges. In 2002 Clayton was the Youth Transition Program Coordinator for Oregon Dept of Human Services, Office of Vocational Rehabilitation. In 2006 he was honored as the Outstanding Special Needs Administrator of the year by the Oregon Assoc. of Vocational Special Needs Personnel. In 2010 Clayton retired from public service, but was asked to come out of retirement to complete work on a $2.8 million federal model demonstration grant known as Project ACCESS. He was the Project Manager for the grant, a collaborative effort between Oregon Dept of Human Services, Office of Vocational Rehabilitation, Oregon Dept
Mercedita (Mercy)
M
ercedita (Mercy) was born in Manila, Philippines and decided on her own, at a very young age that she wanted to live
in the United States. She immigrated to the U.S. as soon as she turned 18. She loved this country and was a true patriot. She lived in Hawaii, Washington, Florida and met her husband Bruce in Indiana. Bruce and Mercy moved to Tillamook in 1998, fell in love with the Oregon coast, and were married at the Cape Meares lighthouse in 1999. Mercy loved being a homemaker and loved to cook and garden. During her time here she volunteered at Tillamook General
of Education, University of Oregon, College of Education and five school districts in Lane County and five Confederated Native American Tribes in Oregon. The program established innovation programs for youth with disabilities transitioning from high school to post-secondary activities, including independent living, higher education and employment. Clayton formally retired from State of Oregon employment in 2014. Prior to his retirement, Governor John Kitzhaber appointed Clayton to the State of Oregon Rehabilitation Council and in 2013 Governor Kate Brown appointed Clayton to another three year term. An award given annually by Portland State University “Swift” is given each year in Clayton’s name. In 2019 the Governor appointed Clayton to a 3 year term on the Oregon Board of Denture Technology. Recently Clayton served as an elected director and vice chair for the Tillamook County Emergency Communications District, Tillamook County Commission on Children and Families and was appointed to the Tillamook County health Council. He was an elected member of the Rockaway Beach city council for 9 years. Clayton has devoted his lifetime to promoting
Hospital and The Women’s Crisis Center. She loved animals and during her life cared for two cats and four dogs: Salvation, Tiger, Emily, George, Lucky and Oliver. Mercy passed away on April 19, 2021 at 9 a.m. She leaves behind her husband Bruce and her dog Oliver, Five brothers; Tito of Vancouver, BC., Jun of Salinas, CA, Francis of Hanford, CA, Eric of Orlando, FL, and Ronillo of Antipolo, Philippines.

He has a long history of public service within Tillamook County. Through his work in public administration, as a private business owner, and working for not-for-profit organizations, Clayton has devoted his energies in gratitude for all the kindnesses he and his family have received from the citizens of Tillamook, as well as public, private and not for profit organizations. Clayton is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- Day Saints. Clayton is survived by his wife Darlene Rees. 2 sons, Richard and Bryan Rees. 5 step children, Dee Dee Burynski, Leslie Waterman, Len Waterman, Annie Bishop and Amanda Maldonado. 1 brother Robert Rees. 2 sisters, Gloria and Evelyn Rees. 12 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Memorial services will be held May 8th, 2021 starting 1pm at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- Day Saints in Tillamook. Inurnment with military honors will be held May 10, 2021 starting 10:30 at Willamette National Cemetery, Portland, Oregon.

arion Blaser was born in Tillamook, Oregon March 24th, 1932 and passed away on April 8th, 2021. Marion grew up on his family farm and eventually owned and ran his own farm with his wife Linda Lee Blaser
(Donowho). He also owned heavy equipment and logged, built dikes and cleared land in Tillamook and surrounding areas for many years. He was one of the hardest working men you would ever know. Marion was a kind man with a loving heart and he liked everyone he met. He loved kids, as well as camping, fishing and hunting. Marion was preceded in death by his son Fred Blaser (October 2011) and his wife of 54 years, Linda (January 2020). He is survived by his daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be dearly missed. A service will be planned at a later date.

Jim VonSeggern Dec. 30, 1937 - March 24, 2021
O
n March 24, 2021, James “Jim” VonSeggern was called home. As he stated, “God has my room ready.” Jim was born on December 30, 1937 to Gale and Gertrude (Trudy) VonSeggern in Neligh, Nebraska and moved with his family to Astoria, Oregon in 1944. He attended Star of the Sea School and graduated in 1956.
In May of 1960, Jim married Claudia Bruder at St. Mary’s Catholic Church and they celebrated 60 years together in 2020. Serving nine years in the U.S. Army, Jim then returned to Oregon and took a job with Dept. of Fish and Wildlife at the hatcheries. He worked at Siletz, Sandy, Marion Forks, and lastly, the Nehalem hatchery, where he retired after 30 years. He settled into retirement in Nehalem in 1995 where he enjoyed the time with his family until his death. Jim enjoyed all things outdoors, but especially loved hunting, fishing, and camping. He also enjoyed the occasional reunion with his Star of the Sea buddies to go over old times. Jim’s greatest love was his family. Spending time with his sons, grandchildren, and great grandchildren was very important. He loved to be called Grandpa and Pops. Left to carry on his legacy are his wife, Claudia, his sons Scott and Tim, adopted son Gerry Breedlong, his five grandchildren, and two great grandchildren, and sisters Elmerna and Lorna. There will be a Celebration of Jim’s life at a later date.

Elect Frankie Knight to NCRD Board I retired as Executive Director in January. I am doing a small amount of temporary work for NCRD as a private contractor, but I write as a private citizen. Frankie Knight III was appointed to the board in July of 2019 to fill a vacancy. He offers a rare and uniquely beneficial perspective to the board for a number of important reasons. As a youth he learned to swim at NCRD’s pool. He participated in children’s theatre in the auditorium (PAC) and socializing at the youth teen center. As an adult he volunteered in the fitness center and played softball at Rex Champ Field. He still swims regularly in the pool and has utilized it

As a board member he demonstrated his professionalism with excellent listening skills and a thirst for details. When he offered opinions on various courses of action his input was always met with serious consideration and he effectively influenced positive dialogue leading to consensus. He has a mature, problem-solving approach always respectful of the perspectives of others. He has a comprehensive understanding of the north county community. These are the kinds of skills, and temperament, so critical for a member of a board of directors. His background and experience have clearly prepared him for this kind of service in a complex and vital organization such as NCRD. I was particularly pleased when the board brought him on in 2019 because I view him as someone who will help guide NCRD for many years into the future. His extended family history here goes back a long time, and he is invested in preserving the community benefits of NCRD for his young family. Vote for Mike Gardner TSD9 Pos. 5 Mike and I first met each other my senior year of high school when he became my teacher at Wilson River School. My grades were bad and I was hardly on track to graduate to say the least. As the year went on, my attitude and attendance had gone from bad to worse. I could tell that I was a complete pain in Mike’s butt, but he was a thorn in my butt too. Mike was not going to let me give up on myself. He had a way of challenging me to get my work done. I always said that I was going to join the Marines, and that was how Mike got to me. If I was slacking or not doing the right thing, he would remind me that if I didn’t pull it together I wouldn’t be going in the Marines at all. One of the many lessons I learned in his class was that my actions have consequences and I wasn’t going to pull a fast one on him. I could tell he cared and saw something in my that many other teachers did not. This pushed me to do better. These attributes are what makes him a perfect candidate for the school board. If Mike would have just given up on me like so many other teachers had through the years, I could say for certain I would not be where I am today. With his guidance and tough love attitude I was able to pull myself together to graduate. Then I was able to fulfill my childhood dream of becoming an infantry Marine. Being able to do that has molded me into the man I am today, raising a family here in Tillamook. She was the board chair during the recruitment and hiring of a new superintendent and led our board fearlessly during that lengthy and many times unpopular activity. With her leadership and that of the other board members we have a great superintendent leading the management of our district. What Eva brings to the district which the other candidates cannot is her expertise in early childhood education. Her work with our early learners in Tillamook County provides the rest of the board and district an understanding of the critical work needed to improve the preparation that our youngest learners need to be successful in our schools. She works in multiple local, county and state level consortiums specific to our early childhood education needs. Thank you Headlight Herald editor Dear Editor Joe Warren: Thanks for printing the article about Bill and Bea Steele in the April 13, 2021 issue. I was fortunate to work for and learn from Bill Steele from the summer of 1961 until I left Tillamook for college in the fall of 1962. This was the first real job I had, starting as a busboy/ dishwasher, working my way up to fry cook. I learned how to work hard, work under time pressure, and work with many people in a small area. As mentioned, the Kentucky Fried Chicken (this was well before “KFC” days) came encased in chipped ice. We had to free the chickens from the ice by hand, cut them on a bandsaw, then count our fingers after they thawed out, just to make sure we hadn’t lost any. Other occupational hazards included forearm burns when dropping the chicken pieces into the boiling oil in the pressure cookers, and minor cuts from the hand operated vegetable slicers. No silly OSHA safety regulations back then! The article did not mention Bill’s considerable skill at baking praise-worthy pies. Many readers may remember my mother, Fran Smouse. Before each shift, she would remind me to cook up an extra “last batch” of chicken, so that there would always be some unsold pieces to bring home along with the left-over pie. Random acts of kindness still alive in Tillamook In these trying days of Covid a random act of kindness seems like a miracle. We experienced one yesterday. My husband and I went to the garden shop at local retail market to buy two bags of potting soil so heavy we knew that us old people couldn’t lift them. We looked for help but a clerk hanging baskets brushed us off. The cashier said she would be most willing to, but we would have to wait a bit until her replacement arrived. We went to try to lift them ourselves when a young woman saw our problem and quickly put them on our wagon. We thanked her and waited in the long line to pay, wondering how we would get them in the car. As we were trying, the same woman seemingly waiting for us, came over and loaded them in the car. Tillamook sophomore left-handed pitcher Parker Mckibbin had an absolutely stellar performance with a career-high 10 strikeouts and he scattered six hits

Walking for a cause: The Knock Out Poverty Care-a-thon Ariel Slifka AmeriCorps VISTA
W
ith beautiful summer days just around the corner, many of us are searching for reasons to enjoy the sunshine and fresh air. And what better reason to get outside than supporting the Knock Out Poverty CARE-a-thon to help alleviate poverty across Tillamook County? Community Action Resource Enterprises (CARE) has been serving Tillamook County as a locally controlled non-profit organization for 30 years. They provide emergency services and homeless services for low-income friends and neighbors, along with administering the Healthy Families program for new parents and operating two assisted living facilities. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and limitations on indoor gatherings, the annual Bowl-a-thon event has been replaced by the Knock Out Poverty CARE-a-thon. Both teams or individuals will collect pledges to run or walk the equivalent of a marathon or half-marathon between Saturday, May 1st and Thursday, May 27th. It may sound like a daunting challenge, but if you run or walk just 1 mile a day from May 1st to May 27th, you will cover the entire length
of a marathon! So how can you get involved? You can sign up as a team or an individual at www.CAREINC.org/donate or call 503-842-5261. You can also donate to runners and walkers who are looking for pledges (or you can make a donation directly to CARE). And spreading the word about the CARE-athon is always appreciated! If you decide to join and register for the CARE-athon, you will receive an event packet that includes a pledge sheet. You can collect pledges from family, friends, neighbors, and you will have access to an online, crowdfunding page as well. With this event, you have the freedom to go at your own pace – you can run the whole event at once or do little chunks at a time. And you might find it fun to participate with your team or pod! Just make sure to maintain social distancing and wear a mask.
