Kiwanda TPUD approves resolution to acquire easements and properties however necessary Corridor Project moves O

n April 19th the Tillamook People’s Utility District (TPUD) approved a resolution to acquire easements and properties to move forward with their Tillamook to Oceanside Transmission Line Project and the substation property in a vote 4 to 1. Board member David Burt representing subdivision #2 voted no. This approval authorizes TPUD staff to continue collaborating with property owners to secure easements along the Tillamook to Oceanside transmission line route. The meeting was held at Tillamook Bay Community College, instead of at the TPUD meeting room, as a large crowd was expected. More than 130 fired-up and passionate people were in attendance, the room was full and people were spilling out into the hallway. The meeting started with public comments; Kurt Mizee a 4th generation Tillamook County dairyman and Netarts / Oceanside homeowner spoke, “The proposed line would cut right through my family’s land, I have a duty to speak up on behalf of my family and as someone who has been involved and following this process for the past 10 years,” Mizee went on to say that what they are proposing is simply overkill, adding that building the transmission line to fix the electrical problems in Oceanside is like using a semi-truck for a job when a wheelbarrow would work just fine. “If I didn’t speak up about this and there was a forest fire caused by this line or if there was damage caused to farmers property I would feel bad that I didn’t say anything,” said Mizee. Don Aufdermauer is another landowner affected by the transmission line. “I thought the TPUD board represented the people; look around this is a room full of people upset about this,” he said “No one wants this route; 70% of the problems out there are from vehicles, trees and wind if you’d move some trees, fix the poles, fix the line the way it is we’d be able to get this taken care of in a much less expensive way.” Among the minority of people

Human ribbon formed to support sexual violence awareness A pril is sexual assault awareness month. Tides of Change hosted their second annual Human Ribbon event on April 20th in support of survivors of sexual violence. Tides of Change is an organization in Tillamook that provides hope, safety and support to those impacted by gender based violence and shifts cultural norms through advocacy, education, and community collaboration. Drone photos were taken at the event to showcase this year’s human formed ribbon. During the event, the president of the Tillamook Eagles Auxiliary, Andi Tarter presented Tides of Change with a check for $1,000 in support of their cause. The Tillamook Eagles are a non-profit organization that unites in the spirit of liberty, truth, justice, and equality, to make human life more desirable by lessening its ills. illamook County’s Kiwanda Corridor Project (KCP), to be located the Pacific City area of south Tillamook County, is advancing. According to the Tillamook Coast Visitors Association website, the general project goals are to; improve livability and user experience for Pacific City’s residents, local businesses, and visitors, provide equitable beach and community experiences, improve transportation efficiency and safety within the Kiwanda Corridor by promoting alternative modes of transportation, providing options for parking, and adding pedestrian connections, improve wayfinding and enhance connections to the community, provide safe and accessible pedestrian and bicycle access, minimize impacts on the environment through sustainable, resilient and equitable architecture and infrastructure, prepare for and buttress existing natural disaster safety & evacuation plans, be fiscally responsible and sustainable. Tillamook County has applied to participate in the Local Government Grant Program to partially support two of the KCP elements: Multi-Modal Path – Phase 1 South and Jensen Property Development. According to grant application documents from Tillamook County and from the website created for the project, “www.online-voice.net/ kiwanda-corridor/ ” The Kiwanda Corridor Project is a once- in-ageneration opportunity that requires extraordinary vision, creativity, and leadership for success. The improvements made will need to balance creating a positive tourism experience without compromising the needs of local businesses and yearround residents. Improvements can occur through the thoughtful resolution of the current underlying traffic and parking problems and by expanding and improving recreational opportunities beyond the focus of Cape Kiwanda. This project is an opportunity for creative place making to seamlessly connect recreational, commercial, residential, and civic spatially to transportation. Cape Kiwanda Master Plan includes the following strategic ideas: Restructuring and improving the Cape Kiwanda parking lot, including a new gathering center that pays homage to one of Pacific Northwest’s most treasured historic landmarks and natural resources; building new restrooms and all-inclusive shower facilities; upgrading garbage and implementing recycling facilities; and connecting multi-model transportation options including EV charging stations, public transportation, and bicycle parking. In addition, reconfiguring Webb Park, including access improvements to Circle Drive, improving parking shuttle services, completing development of the Nestucca Valley Community Alliance (NVCA) property as a community park, developing the recently acquired Jensen Property, including access improvements to Pacific Avenue and Sunset Avenue, constructing the Cape Kiwanda Drive Multi-Use Path, from the Jensen Property to Bob Straub State Park,

Arbor Day is always observed on the last Friday of April, this year it will be held Friday, April 29th. City Manager Nathan George and City Planner Tommy O’Donnell along with the City of Tillamook public works department planted a tree at Goodspeed Park in recognition of Arbor Day and Earth Day. The Arbor Day Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to planting trees. They have 350 million trees in neighborhoods, communities, cities and forests throughout the world. The Arbor Day Foundation created the Tree City USA program in 1976 to encourage greener, healthier communities. Tillamook has reached their 35-year milestone in the Tree City USA program in 2022. To qualify as a Tree City USA, a community must maintain a tree board or department, have a community tree ordinance, spend at least $2 per person on urban forestry

TAPA’s ‘On Golden Pond’ opens May 6

The Tillamook Association for the Performing Arts (TAPA) is pleased to announce the performance dates for Ernest Thompson’s On Golden Pond, which opens on May 6, at 7 p.m. at The Barn Community Play-house in Tillamook. Additional performances will be held on May 7, 13, 14, 20, 21 at 7 p.m. and May 8, 15, 22 at 2 p.m. Doors open 30-minutes prior to curtain. There is an opening night champagne gala on May 6th; each ticket holder is welcome to complimentary food and will receive a complimentary beverage. TAPA is celebrating over 40-years of entertainment by giving a nod to the old favorite, which was first performed at The Barn Community Playhouse in 2003. Robert Buckingham, director of the revival production, remembers watching the film with his parents in 1981 at the historic Fox Theater in Rawlins, Wyoming. The movie and the memory have been close to his heart ever since, which is why he chose this play over many other plays performed on TAPA’s stage during the 40 year history. The story centers around the old fashioned and, at times, inappropriate curmudgeon Norman (portrayed by Chris Chiola) and his loving, force of nature wife, Ethel (portrayed by Kristi Hanson) at their summer cabin at Golden Pond in Maine. They are visited by their adult daughter Chelsea (portrayed by Sarajane Elkins), her new boyfriend Bill (portrayed by Jason Hovey) and his son Billy Jr. (portrayed by Lora Ressler). The Thayer cabin is also visited by Chelsea’s

Erik Knoder Guest Article The global pandemic hammered many industries and led to massive unemployment, but home owners are coming away with a big win. Home prices not only continued to rise in many cities across the nation, but they increased even more than in the previous year. The widely quoted Case-Shiller Index of national home prices available from the St. Louis Federal Reserve showed a 19.2% increase over the year to January 2022. That was up from an 11% growth rate of the year before. This raises the question, how is the real estate market in Northwest Oregon? The answer is that most Northwest Oregon counties seem to be doing very well. Residential property average sales prices reported by RMLS in January 2022 rose 29.2% to $543,700 in the North Coast region (Clatsop, Tillamook, and Lincoln counties combined), grew 12.9% to $434,700 in Columbia County, and increased 18.2% to $470,800

The volume of homes sold as reported by the RMLS system also held up pretty well in 2021. The North Coast region reported 1,941 closed sales for the year versus 1,960 sales for 2020. Columbia County had 970 closed sales in 2021 versus 914 in 2020, and Benton County reported 258 sales in 2021 versus 189 sales in 2020. Not all realtors report sales to RMLS. One drawback in using home sales to evaluate the real estate market is that the quality of houses sold each month is not consistent; one month may see more high-quality houses sold, the next month may see more low-quality houses being sold. One way around this problem is to use economic models to estimate values for all the residential property in an area. Zillow does this modeling and makes the data available on the company’s website. e were out of town for just a few days when all snow broke loose. I received texts, e-mails and pictures of snow here in Cape Meares—in April! Surely one for the record books. It’s official! Kent Martin received his new membership certificate at the Tillamook Fire District Annual Awards Banquet on Saturday, April 9. This means Kent joins Mike Smith, Dave Audet, Olli Ollikainen, and Jonathon Hedden in the elite squad manning Station 73 right here in Cape Meares. As rural volunteer firefighters, they are trained to do a variety of first responder tasks in addition to fighting fires. Olli and Mike are also Emergency Medical Responders (EMRs). All’s well that ends well: The trapped beachgoers were able to walk back around the point after a couple of hours. Spring has sprung and the Master Gardener sale is ready to help you take advantage of it. Lend a hand May 7 for the Downtown Tillamook Cleanup espite the strange weather patterns of late, it’s still the time of year to begin spring cleaning in preparation for sunnier days ahead. Here at the Chamber, we hope to kick off the traditions of springtime tidying with our annual Downtown Tillamook Cleanup, sponsored by US Bank. Scheduled for 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on May 7, the Downtown Cleanup will bring volunteers together to weed sidewalks, clean signs, blow leaves and pick up garbage downtown to keep our community attractive and appealing for locals and visitors alike. After a long winter — and an unusual April snow —we’ll make the city shine. We’ll focus on the five blocks along Main Street and Pacific, splitting up into small groups to cover the whole area. We encourage you to bring your family or friends along as a little work party.

Or show up solo and meet new friends as you work together. North Coast Lawn graciously lends us all the equipment we need to do our work, so no need to bring any tools. And the Chamber supplies work gloves in multiple sizes, including kids’ sizes. Afterward, you can head to Dutch Mill for a free “thank you” meal to show our appreciation for your help. This is one of my personal favorite events of the year, because it feels great to give back to the community. Plus, there’s something so satisfying about scraping away the moss that’s grown between pavers over the winter. It’s such a simple act that makes all the difference — and you can immediately see how much better the sidewalks look because of it. And this year, I’m especially excited to include extra hands on our volunteer crew! We’ve invited the Young Pros Tillamook network to the Downtown Cleanup, and sev-

eral members have already scheduled the event into their calendars. We hope this event will be one of many “Engage” events, where the Young Pros can give back to the community through service and fundraising. For folks who aren’t part of the Young Pros network, this will be a great opportunity to meet some of the talented young professionals who live here in Tillamook — if you haven’t already met them through their many community involvements. As it turns out, many of our Young Pros are already active volunteers. If you can’t make it for the full shift, no worries! Join us when you can to lend a hand however long you’re able. When it comes to spring cleaning, every little bit counts.

things you can do in the garden until the weather and the soil temperatures warm: pick up sticks and debris from the flower beds, trim back ferns to the fiddle heads, and prune any dead or broken branches from trees and shrubs. But perhaps more important are a couple of things not to do this month. First, try not to rake, dig or even step on muddy soil. Working the soil when it is too wet compacts it and makes root growth difficult for seeds or plants subsequently placed there. Best to wait until the soil dries out to rake it and get the vegetable and flower beds ready for planting. If you can take a clump of soil, press it in your

hand and it crumbles and doesn’t have water dripping out, it is ready to be worked. If on the other hand, the soil stays in a ball or releases water when pressed, wait until the sun and wind have had a chance to dry it out for a few days before working in it. The other thing to avoid doing in April is to prune hydrangeas. Most hydrangeas – especially the H. macrophylla (lace cap and mop head) – bloom on old growth. So pruning now will also prune off the summer blooms. There are new varieties that bloom on new growth, but if you aren’t certain you have one of these, best to leave them until after the blooms

fade in the fall. I will offer a couple of cases when you can prune now: a.) if you don’t mind losing flowers, and b.) if the shrub itself has gotten to be so large it needs to be done sooner rather than later. Perhaps it is blocking a window or door or if it is encroaching on a neighboring property, in which case, a good spring pruning will correct the problem. We all need to be aware of what is going on in our gardens to get the most pleasure from them. Whether it be cataloging when the last frost date is or what chores should be accomplished now, staying in tune with your garden can only be a good thing.

April Showers?

S

ometimes it’s hard for me to realize we are at the end of April. Snow, sleet and hail earlier this month made it seem more like Christmas than Easter. And then when I checked the last frost date for Tillamook County, I found - according to Oregon State Extension Service – that date is now around May 4. It has traditionally been closer to May 15. On further exploration, I also found an interactive map from plantmaps.com saying it is May 21-31. So, by then I was really confused. I did a little more research and found Oregon State Extension’s May 4 date was the result of compilation of data from 1981 through 2010. And their caveat was that in 90% of those 20 years, the last frost was on or before May 4. But on the plantmap.com site, the cities of Tillamook, Rockaway Beach, and Garibaldi were May 21-31. However, Hebo and Pacific City were May 1-10 and Manzanita and Nehalem were both May 11-20. Which of these dates should we go by?

We have talked before about the many micro-climates we have in our county, and these frost dates confirm that. There is also the issue of micro-climates within individual yards and gardens. Therefore, you need to be aware of what conditions are like in your own garden: sun or shade, wind, moisture, ocean effects and soil type are the main ones. And, of course, the type of plants in question is important. There are some plants – like shrubs, trees, some herbs and vegetables like lettuce and beans, and perennials - that can withstand a little frost and cold weather. Others, like tomatoes and peppers, aren’t cold-hardy.

So, to be safe, I would suggest sticking to that May 15 date for most of your plants in most of the county. And wait to put those more fragile vegetables, herbs, and annuals into the garden until later in May, maybe even to that May 20-31 range. Which means you need to protect those plants inside for a little longer. But keeping plants inside brings on its own challenges. The light indoors isn’t as strong as outside sun so the plants tend to grow taller and spindlier than we would like. Special “grow lights” can help with that. You must be attentive to watering, too. Inside tomato plants won’t need as much water as they would once planted outside where the wind and sun will dry the soil faster. And there is the perennial challenge of lack of enough window sills…unless you are lucky enough to have a heated greenhouse. When those April days are nice and sunny, it is very tempting to get out into the garden to do some spring clean-up. There are a few

the one I like best is...you are smarter now than when you read it the first time! As we grow and mature, we hopefully gain a new and improved mindset that will help us find deeper meaning in the novels we read. I re-read my most-loved books from time to time and it really makes me appreciate the author and the book that much more. In fact, I am revisiting Misery by Stephen King right now. It has been many years since I originally read it and I have watched the movie version in the meantime. I already know how it is going to end, but that’s OK. In fact, I think knowing the ending allows me to concentrate more on the details and nuances in the text, enjoying it all the more the second time around. Since Misery is an on-theedge-of-your-seat thriller, I calmed myself down by picking up a very old classic, The House at Pooh Corner, by A. A. Milne. I read this book many moons ago, and at that time, I thought it was just an imaginary tale about a stuffed bear who liked honey. But as I re-read this title decades later, I can see all the symbolism in the text. For instance, Pooh’s main objects of affection are his pots of honey. Honey is his favorite dish, and he eats “smackerels” of it all day long. Honey comforts him, but it

also appears to be much more important than that...it’s as though it feeds his soul. So, are we talking about actual honey here, or could it be symbolism for things that comfort us in our lives? Throughout this old classic, Pooh and his friends share many other interesting thoughts and life lessons dealing on topics adults can relate to. Winnie the Pooh on friendship: “You can’t stay in your corner of the Forest waiting for others to come to you. You have to go to them sometimes.” Pooh on body image: “Just because an animal is large, it doesn’t mean he doesn’t want kindness.” Piglet on our differences: “The things that make me different are the things that make me, me.” Pooh on love and loss: “How lucky am I to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.” Pooh on disagreements: “If the person you are talking to doesn’t appear to be listening, be patient. It may simply be that he has a small piece of fluff in his ear.” Pooh on slowing your life down: “Rivers know this: there is no hurry. We shall get there some day.” And gloomy Eeyore on disappointments: “Could be worse. Not sure how, but it could be.” So, on these rainy spring days, I invite you to check out your favorite old book to re-read...maybe even one that takes place in the Hundred Acre Wood! Borrow a teaspoon of honey from Pooh to stir into your tea, plop down into your favorite reading chair, and get reacquainted with a friendly old book.

Frequently asked questions about the proposed TBCC bond measure By Ross Tomlin TBCC President

n May 17, 2022, the Tillamook Bay Community College Board of Education will refer to voters in Tillamook County a $14.4 million proposed bond measure to build a new healthcare education building on property the college owns adjacent to the main campus building on Third Street. If the proposed measure passes, the new building would provide the college the capacity to add a nursing program; add additional healthcare occupations training programs; and provide space to expand and add new degrees and certificates. It would include simulation labs, classrooms with built-in technology, and a large community event center. Why is Tillamook Bay Community College propos-

ing a bond measure? TBCC has provided education and job training to students in Tillamook for over 40 years. In 2019, TBCC commissioned a study on the educational interests of Tillamook County. It included focus groups, community town halls, one-on-one interviews and a community wide survey. Over 400 community members participated. The study results showed interest in TBCC training for healthcare occupations such as nurses, CNAs, EMTs, paramedics, and technicians. The survey also identified an interest in a large-scale community event space for conferences, trainings, and locally hosted events. In response, in 2020, TBCC began working with an architect to develop a Facilities Master Plan that outlines the capacity the col-

lege would need to deliver general education and careertechnical programs to meet Tillamook County’s current and future workforce projections. In 2021 the Facilities Master Plan was adopted by the board and includes proposed construction of a new facility focused on healthcare education training. The proposed new building would include simulation labs, classrooms with built-in technology, office space, and

a large community event center that the college, local businesses, and community organizations could utilize. TBCC is the only community college in Oregon that does not have a nursing program. The proposed new building would add the capacity for TBCC to train nursing students locally. Could the college expand and remodel its current space? The TBCC Main Campus building has served the college for the past 12 years but cannot accommodate additional growth. The new building proposal would add six additional classrooms and three specialized labs. Where would the proposed new building be located? If the proposed bond measure passes, the college would build the new building on land adjacent to the main campus building on the south

side of the driveway, which the college already owns. What would the proposed bond measure cost? If the proposed bond measure passes, the new building would be estimated to cost $22.4 million. TBCC has received an $8 million matching grant from the Oregon State legislature to construct the proposed new building. The grant must be matched within five years to receive it. If passed by voters, the $14.4 million proposed bond would meet the match and provide the additional funds to construct the proposed new building. If the proposed bond measure passes, homeowners would be assessed an estimated $0.19 per $1,000 of assessed property value for a 20-year duration. A homeowner with an assessed property value of $250,000 would pay$47.50 annually,

or $3.95 monthly, on the proposed bond measure. If the proposed bond does not pass, the college would not receive the $8 million in committed match funds from the state, the proposed building project and educational services would not be provided, and the proposed tax would not be assessed. The current bond tax would expire in 2027. The last time TBCC referred a proposed bond measure to voters was 2007 to build the main college building on Third Street, and upgrade and construct college facilities at the high schools in north, central, and south Tillamook County. That bond measure passed with an estimated bond tax rate of $0.19 per $1,000 of assessed value. Actual tax rates have been less. The current bond debt will be paid off in 2027.

Serious challenges to keeping bees alive exist. It’s part science, part art, and part luck. Some things we have control over and some we don’t. That’s the topic for the next article I’ll be sharing with you. I’d like you to know that I am in no way trying to convince any of you you should become beekeepers. It’s expensive and challenging, as I said, but from the

bees we get a lot more than just honey or pollinated fruit trees. We get another glimpse of the awesomeness of nature. There are two upcoming events you need to be aware of. First, we will be at the Home and Garden Show. Please stop by, see the bees and their hive. Local honey will be for sale. Bring your questions. Secondly, there is a free class which we call “To Bee or Not to Bee”. It’s an introduction to honey bees, the challenges of keeping bees in Tillamook, and what equipment it takes to keep bees. his past weekend 1,450,000 new honey bees arrived and now call Tillamook home! No reason to be nervous. They are really friendly (unless you are trying to steal their honey). They didn’t just fly in, of course! They came in cardboard boxes in a form called a “nuc” which is short for “nucleus colony”. A truck brought 145 of these nucs from Colton, Oregon. Each nuc contained five frames mostly covered with bees, about ten thousand per nuc. One frame was filled with pollen and nectar or honey. Others were filled with eggs, larva, and capped

brood. There was one queen in this mini-colony and she was busy laying eggs. Nurse bees were actively feeding larva and other workers worked to maintain the 95 degree temperature required. Can you imagine what it takes for it to be in the 40’s outside and 95 inside? It’s one well-orchestrated community! You will be surprised and, perhaps, saddened to know that all 1,450,000 of these bees will be dead before the fourth of July with the exception of the queen. Don’t be sad. That’s their destiny. They were born to only live about forty days this time of the year and to work faithfully building colonies that will total over seven million bees by mid-summer, about

50,000 bees per colony. The summer bees will collect the nectar, make honey and produce the bees that will produce the winter bees to continue on the life-cycle of the honey bee colonies. Based on fossils, it’s been going on like this for a hun-

I

n this month’s Dispatch from the WAVE, I’m excited to share about the opening of the TCTD propane fueling facility that was constructed at the District’s operations center. Over the past several years, TCTD has been exploring different clean air fuel alternatives. In discovery, due to cost constraints and fuel distribution limitations, converting the fleet to propane powered vehicles was determined to be the most advantageous option for Tillamook County. Tillamook County residents are going to experience countless benefits from the District’s conversion of fleet to propane. We are focusing our short-term efforts to convert the Dial-A-Ride fleet of gasoline powered vans and small buses to propane. The District has begun this conversion with the recent purchase of 4 propane powered vehicles. Immediate benefits to the environment will be a 20% percent reduction in nitrogen oxide, a 60% reduction in carbon monoxide and a 24% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Also, the District’s cost for propane fuel is 50% less than gasoline. Next year, with just the 4 propane powered vehicles in

the fleet we expect to have a fuel cost savings of $27,000. Additionally, the District anticipates that by using cleaner burning fuel the costs to maintain the fleet will also have a cost savings. With construction of the fueling facility, the District made the strategic decision to own the pumps that will be used in dispensing fuel. With this, TCTD will earn greenhouse gas credits and for every gallon of propane dispensed into vehicles, the District will earn 12 cents per gallon. TCTD has selected Blue Star Gas as its propane gas supplier who is the only renewable propane gas provider in Oregon. Each month TCTD will report the fuel dispensed to the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) who will calculate the credits earned by the District

at the end of each reporting period. TCTD will then accumulate credits and will convert these accumulated credits into cash that can be used as local matching funds for grants in purchasing new vans and buses in the future. TCTD’s goal is to begin replacing the diesel fuel powered buses with propane powered buses in the near future. In doing this, there will be greater benefits to both the environment and the District. The District is currently working with ODOT and a consultant to develop vehicle specifications to begin submitting orders to purchase buses. Current national supply chain issues have adversely affected the bus manufacturing industry. I also want to include a big “Thank You” to our team of 37 drivers that keep all TCTD vehicles rolling. On March 18 we celebrated National Driver Appreciation Day and thank everyone who participated in our Facebook shout-outs, acknowledging drivers who go above and beyond to serve our customers. cut some cilantro from my garden and brought it into the kitchen, then rinsed it in cold water and separated its leafy strands and laid them on a square of paper towel. I laid another piece of paper towel on top of them and patted them mostly dry, then got out a small baggie to store them in. Starting to wrap the cilantro in the damp paper towel, I saw a bit of movement next to one strand of cilantro. Looking closer, there amid the leaves was a tiny green larva. It still clung to the greenery which I had already rinsed under the faucet. I shook the cilantro and the worm fell onto the paper towel. It stretched

its forward half up in the air, probing blindly around with its snout, feeling for the cilantro leaves on which it had been feeding, and in which it had been hidden by its natural camouflage. Contorting itself, the worm swiveled its snout in the air, reached upward left and right, twisting. Then

it lowered its snout to the paper towel, as if trying to whiff a trace of the cilantro so it could find its way back to food and safety. Eyeless, it foraged blindly, though its body was covered with nerve cells that sensed light. I looked more closely at the rest of the cilantro, trying to make sure no other worms were in it. The blind worm still searched around in all directions. Its motions had become faster, seemed more anxious and fearful. I found a magnifying glass and looked closely at this plump green thing with minute feet like suction cups.

Dangling it, I then laid it beside the worm, which quickly wriggled among the leaves and began to eat. Its frantic motions slowed, became languid, as though more content. Through my magnifier I watched it for a couple of minutes until it started to cast about again, reaching its front half into the air, flailing blindly about for other stems and leaves. Or for something else, I knew not what. It had become agitated again, as if dissatisfied with what it had. It moved away from the strand I had given it, out onto the white desert of paper towel that stretched away in all directions. Inching its midsection upward again and again, it slowly, then sightlessly thrust itself forward across the empty expanse. Repeatedly, it reached up and out, its body twisting, but found nothing to satisfy it. The worm moved further away, leaving the sprig of cilantro behind. I picked up the green strand and moved it into the worm’s path. It quickly found the stem and its leaves and moved into them again. But, after

www.tillamookheadlightherald.com a moment of eating and tentative examination, it left the strand and moved away again, inching across the empty whiteness, searching. That was when I took up the paper towel, shook the strand of cilantro and the worm into the sink. Turning on the faucet, I swept them into the disposal unit and turned on the grinder. From beginning to end, this small scene said something to me about the worm and us and the nature of life. We camouflage, protect ourselves against dangers as best we can. Frequently restless and dissatisfied with what we have, we search for more. We are questers, but often we search blindly and anxiously. And for what? Often, we do not know. Diversions and entertainments are dangled before us, and we yield to click bait. But afterwhile, like the worm, we become anxious and cannot find what we truly need. And we are unaware that some force may be watching us, at first fascinated, but ultimately bored by our aimless search. Finally, we are flushed away into mystery. All we had were these moments, but we may have failed to figure out what to do with them, how to use them best for ourselves and for some common good. Of course, we still are here and, hopefully, will remain interested enough to widen our search.

OBITUARIES Adelyn Willford April 8, 1924 - April 15, 2022

A

delyn Willford passed away in Eugene, Oregon on April 15, 2022 at the age of 98. Adelyn was born in Lankershim (Los Angeles), California on April 8, 1924. Scarce employment due to the Great Depression prompted her parents Fenton and Margaret McLellan to move to Oregon in 1930. As a youth Fenton had lived on his father’s homestead on Upper Sweet Creek, near Mapleton, and he introduced Adelyn to a similar childhood: milking cows, raising chickens, tending gardens, fishing, and walking with her younger sister Barbara to a one-room schoolhouse with only nine students. Adelyn cherished these years that were filled with nature, music, dances, and plays presented by the community. Adelyn met her future husband Jack when she was a sophomore at Mapleton High School and he was a junior. They married (at her suggestion) in 1942 a year before Jack’s Army Infantry Division shipped out from Camp Adair to North Africa. Jack was wounded during the Italian campaign and received a Purple Heart medal. He

returned to Adelyn in 1945 and met his daughter Janele for the first time. Jack joined the timber industry and they raised their three daughters Janele, Beverly, and Jeri in Tillamook. Adelyn also provided childcare for “little ones” (many families stayed in contact in later years). Timberwork took them to Klamath Falls and then to Thorne Bay, Alaska for ten years. Adelyn adored Alaska and carried forward her childhood pastimes of fishing, berry picking, and boating. They enjoyed many weekends out on the Clarence Strait catching salmon, halibut, and sea cucumbers on a cabin cruiser named the C-SCAN (an acrostic from names of their grandchildren). Adelyn continued to enjoy arts and music, organizing events for the Arts Council program for the public school. Musicians would often arrive by floatplane, perform a town concert in the gymnasium, have dinner at Jack and Adelyn’s house, and play another concert in the living room. Jack and Adelyn retired to Prineville in 1984 and adapted to high desert camping and fishing. Adelyn also became a dedicated family historian and visited numerous genealogical research venues across the country. They celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary in 2017 one year before Jack’s passing. Adelyn moved to the Eugene Hotel in 2018, enjoyed lectures and concerts, and kept up a lively correspondence with her three daughters, five grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and many friends, all of whom will miss her dearly. Per Jack and Adelyn’s request there will be a family remembrance ceremony.

T

he Lord took Jodi to her heavenly home March 28, 2022 where she joined her husband, her infant son and several beloved family members. She had recently been hospitalized with heart failure, acute diabetes and walking pneumonia. Jodi Lynn was born September 28, 1958 in Astoria, OR to Bud & Mitzie Ponsness. When she was 5 her dad’s new position on the Oregon State Police moved the family to Tillamook where Jodi spent her first 12 years

of schooling, graduating from Tillamook High in 1976, the same year she was Oregon’s National Teenager. From there she attended Oregon State for two years before moving to Denver to attend the Institute of Interior Design, from which she graduated in 1980. Jodi spent her career as a loved and skilled designer. She married Jonathan Holmes, a commercial realtor, Nov 22, 1986. Lonesome for family – and the Pacific Ocean- they moved to Oregon in 1987, settling in the Lake Oswego area where they raised their family Jodi’s husband Jon died of pancreatic cancer in April 2019. She is survived by her children, Lauren Brittany & Jon Benjamin, her mother & stepdad, David & Mitzie Dunbar, brother Jeff (Sheryl) Ponsness as well as many loving aunts, uncles and cousins, and a host of dear friends. A private Celebration of Life will be held May 1. Condolences may be sent to the family at 1360 Crowley Ave SE – Salem, OR 97302. Private Memorial service May 1, 2022

Mooks bounce back with two league wins on the diamond Mike Weber For The Herald

The No. 11 ranked Tillamook High Cheesemakers bounced back from a disappointing home loss and won two straight Class 4A Cowapa League baseball road games last week. The Cheesemakers, guided by second-year Coach Matt Strang, lost 10-0 to the No. 3 ranked Banks High Braves (5-0 league, 11-2 overall) April 15 at home. The Mooks (3-1 league, 4-6 overall) came back and regained their confidence with a strong effort versus the Valley Catholic High Valiants (1-3 league, 6-7 overall) April 19 in a rarely seen 5-5 tie game at Jesuit High School in Portland. The contest was moved from Valley Catholic, because the

Valiant’s field was unplayable due to recent rainfall. “I’ve never been a part of baseball game that ended in a tie,” said Strang. “It’s definitely been a weird season and it’s much worse than last year. Last week we had snow, hail and rain and just every type of weather conditions, including a little sunshine too. The last few weeks, there’s just been some crazy weather and we’ve had games canceled and then this one ends because of darkness. We’ll have to finish the game later, so it’s just been a crazy season.” The Cheesemakers won 9-7 over the Seaside/Jewell High Seagulls (0-4 league, 5-7) April 20 at Seaside High School, which was their first road win this season. Tillamook won its second straight in a 7-1 win over the #20

ranked Astoria High Fishermen April 22 at Astoria High School. The Mooks were hoping to extend their win streak to three when they met the Fishermen (2-2 league, 5-9) again Tuesday at home (results unavailable because of Headlight Herald press deadline). “It’s nice seeing us start a win streak now, because I think it will help provide us with some momentum for the remainder of the season so that we can hopefully achieve our goal and reach the state playoffs” said Strang, a 2013 Tillamook High graduate. The last time Tillamook advanced to the playoffs was in 2013 and Strang was a member of the squad that reached the Class 4A quarterfinals. The 16-team state playoffs begin May 25. The Mooks had a strong start versus the Valiants and they took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Junior catcher Bryce Hamerl (2-for-4, two doubles) hit a line drive to left field for an RBI double, driving home starting pitcher Parker McKibbin (1-for-2, single, hit by pitch) to put Tillamook on the scoreboard. “I was just trying to keep them (Valiants) off balance at the plate,” said McKibbin, who had a season-high nine strikeouts, while throwing fastballs and curveballs. “My fielders got the outs when we could and we had couple of mistakes, so there’s some things that we need to improve on. It was nice to get out here and play on this beautiful field and it was fun to play here and get the game in with my friends.” McKibbin pitched five innings and reliever Seth Landolt (three strikeouts) pitched two and one third innings. The duo combined to allow just five hits by the Valiants while the Mooks had a total of 11 hits.

inning. “We definitely played well enough to win, but we just needed to play better defensively in the fifth inning,” said Strang. “We had really good pitching from both of our pitchers. We started off with hot bats, then we kind of cooled off a little bit later. We hit the ball well and we had a lot of good at-bats and lots of good defensive plays. It was just that one inning that hurt us and that’s the reason it was tied.” Valley Catholic capitalized on two Mooks errors and scored three runs, knotting it 5-5. Following two scoreless frames, the contest was extended to extra innings in the eighth, but the Mooks were unable to produce the goahead run. The daylight was gone at that point though and without lights on the field, the contest concluded after seven and a half innings at 8:15 p.m. The remainder of the game will be played when the two teams meet again May 13 at Tillamook High School. The contest will continue in the bottom of the inning with one out and a Valiant baserunner on first base. Following the conclusion of the contest, the teams will then play a regularly scheduled seven inning contest.

The Mooks extended their lead to 3-0 in the top of the second, highlighted by an RBI triple by junior Garrison Gunder (2-for-3, two RBI), scoring senior Dillon Stein, who earlier drew a walk. Gunder scored on an RBI sacrifice groundout by junior Cade Ross. The Valiants came back and got a run in the bottom half of the frame, making it 3-1 after two innings. “Things got tough late in the game and stuff happens that you really have no control over, but I feel like we closed the game good and we did what we could to finish it up,” said Gunder. “We had one inning where we slipped a little and we had a couple of errors that allowed them (Valiants) to score a few runs. We finished it off and held it to a tie at the end.” After the Valiants narrowed the margin to 3-2 in the third, Tillamook responded with an offensive spurt to regain a three-run advantage. Sophomore Melvin Ramos (1-for-4) ignited a rally with a single. Ramos scored on an RBI triple by Stein, who then ran home on an RBI single by Gunder, making it 5-2 after four innings. It appeared that the Mooks were on the verge of getting a win with a threerun lead going into the fifth

TELC hosts 5K Color Fun Run to benefit local childcare program

Tillamook Early Learning Center (TELC) invites the community to add a little color to their lives to benefit local families enrolled at the Tillamook childcare center and preschool. The 501(c)3 nonprofit will host a family-friendly 5K Color Fun Run hosted by the Port of Tillamook Bay on June 11, 2022. Participants will walk or run a breathtaking course that winds around the blimp hangar, air museum, future site of a new disc golf course, and beautiful scenery at the port, all the while getting periodically showered in colored powder. The Tillamook County Creamery Association and the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians, the event’s presenting sponsors, will send racers off from the starting line and welcome them back after their three mile journey. Children and leashed pets are welcome to participate. “By the end of the 5K, everyone will be covered in a unique design of colors that they can show off to friends and family at the finish line,” said Jaimie Rhodes, TELC executive director. “This event is sure to inspire awe and create lasting memories.

We are grateful to the Port for hosting this run and to TCCA and the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians for supporting us as a presenting sponsor.” TELC will use proceeds from the run to support its local childcare program, which provides all-day licensed childcare and preschool for local families. “TELC provided more than $40,000 in tuition assistance to help our families with childcare expenses during the pandemic. The Color Fun Run will be a key part of raising funds to continue to offset that assistance and potentially expand our reach to include more families,” Rhodes said.
