Tillamook County moves to High Risk Vaccine eligibility to open to 16 plus

illamook County moved to High Risk effective Friday, April 9, through Thursday, April 22. The county did meet previous metrics to move to Extreme Risk, but under Gov. Kate Brown’s new statewide metrics, the county did not meet all metrics to move to Extreme Risk. The new metrics include COVID-19 positive patients occupying at least 300 hospital
beds and a 15 percent increase in cases in the seven-day average over the past week. “Remember to limit those gatherings to no more than eight people outdoors,” Administrator Marlene Putman said of the High Risk level during a community update April 9. “There’s different guidance for different settings.” Putman said positive COVID-19 cases continue to increase among all ages now. In the last seven days, the county had 28 positive cases.
Emergency Preparedness Coordinator Ed Colson said 928 primary vaccine doses have been given this week. “Oregon Health Authority has shared some age vaccination rates,” Colson said. “For Tillamook County, as of the 7th, show that 75.3 percent of the 65 and plus have been vaccinated, almost 28 percent of the 40-64 age range and older than 20, 41.2 percent have been vaccinated in Tillamook County.” Brown announced April 6 that
all Oregonians over the age of 16 would be eligible to sign up for a COVID-19 vaccine beginning Monday, April 19. “We do only have Moderna available and continue to receive small amounts of J & J for special outreach,” Colson said. “Both Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccine are only authorized for those 18 years and older.” Colson said for those 16 and 17 years old, the health department could call 211 to locate where the individual can receive a Pfizer
vaccine. Tillamook County residents can book an appointment for a vaccine at https://tillamookchc.org/coronavirus/vaccines/ The vaccine line is available for questions or help with booking an appointment due to limited Internet access. Remembering Tillamook’s fast food couple Bill and Bea Steele B

ill and Bea Steele lived a long love filled life that started when He was 21 and she, 20. Bill served at the tail end of WWII with the Navy and then worked at the paper mill in Camas, WA. Bea had a good job in the secretary pool for a heating company. They met at a Saturday night dance hall that was by the river in Washougal WA. Dancing was an activity they enjoyed throughout their lives. Bill and Bea married and bought their first business from Bill’s parents in the early 50’s in NE Portland. It was a little grocery store with a soda fountain that sat 6-8 people and had a 3X3 stall that had a grill in it for making hamburgers. It was connected to the house they lived in and had a basement with a huge walk-in freezer to keep the ice cream they made. In the late 50’s racial unrest was increasing in Portland over the building of the Coliseum. The store was held up a couple of times so Bill decided it was time to move his young family to a safer place. That is when they bought Gabby’s Drive-In in Tillamook Oregon. Located south of town on Hwy 101. There was a little seating inside and had about 10-14 car stalls outside along with a drive through. Bill and Bea worked side by side, Bill in the kitchen and Bea in the dining and carhop area. Bea was a gracious and thorough teacher to the young girls she hired. The yearly flooding in Tillamook took a toll on the building. The Christmas Flood of 1964, however, caused extensive damage inside. They rebuilt the tiny dining area into a larger capacity restaurant
with a ramp down to the car service area. Kentucky Fried Chicken came to the Pacific NW and Bill and Bea bought the franchise from The Colonel because of an ad in a magazine that Bea had found. It is believed that they were one of the first two to buy into the franchise in Oregon. They had a friendship with the Colonel that lasted many years. Thus started a 45-year adventure with KFC. With the new and improved working areas, Bea and Bill began catering to group gatherings and the Saturday night dances. Along with the KFC chicken, Bill made his own pies, thought up a peanut butter burger, developed his own Sir William’s
Fish and Chips, clam chowder and coleslaw dressing. His chowder and slaw dressing became quite famous. Weekend travelers asked for it to be bottled to take home. An interesting note is that in the early days of KFC, they received the chicken whole and it was cut with a band saw into nine pieces. On busier than expected weekends, chicken would run out and someone made a quick trip to the Portland area to borrow some chickens. Bill didn’t have recipes for
anything he made. So, when they ran out at Gabby’s, Bill would be called to come in and make more. One day Bea got fed up with running out and only Bill to make it that she followed him around for about a week with measuring cups and spoons and a notebook to write it all down. Sadly, that notebook has been lost. But he did teach his children some of the special dishes. KFC decided that their chicken needed their own building, so, Bill and Bea built the KFC just next to downtown on Hwy 101 in Tillamook. In 1978 they moved to Dallas Oregon and built a KFC there as well. As their children grew, they expanded the KFC stores to McMinnville, OR, and Newberg, OR. where their sons helped run the stores. Once they finally retired, they spent some time traveling. Their favorite place was Branson Missouri. They were blessed to have over 30 grandchildren and over 32 great grandchildren. And numerous others that called her Grammie and him Poppy. Bill was known to tell some great tales of hunting and fishing which were shared at the counter at Gabby’s nearly every afternoon with friends who also had great stories of their own. It was shared with me after Bea’s passing that her “joy filled eyes, her smile and ‘How are you?’ when she met you made you feel she really wanted to know.” Bill was the sole caregiver of Bea who suffered from Alzheimer’s and He from Heart disease. Bill passed away 4 years ago and Bea in October of 2020. They both lived to be near 90 years old. There will be a Celebration of Life for Bea at the Northwest Christian Church in Newberg on April 24, at 1 p.m.
New candy store opens in Pacific City May 1 P

acific City will have a new retail candy and ice cream store this summer: Pacific Coast Candy. The family-run shop opens May 1. Leslie and John Batdorf own the business. John is in the banking industry while Leslie works in the medical field.
When the couple bought their house in Pacific City five years ago, Leslie said one of the first things they noticed was there was not a designated candy store in the area. “We were talking about it for five years and all of a sudden, everything was falling into place,” Leslie said of starting the business. “We found a spot and we’re doing it.”

COVID-19 vaccine update: Those 16 and older eligible April 19 T

illamook County has moved to High Risk, effective Friday, April 9, through Thursday, April 22. The county had 65 cases over a twoweek period, from March 21 through April 3, which would have moved the county to Extreme Risk, but Gov. Kate Brown announced a new statewide metric Tuesday, April 6, for counties to move to Extreme Risk: COVID-19 patients occupying at least 300 hospital beds in the region and a 15 percent increase in the seven-day average over the past week. Counties must also meet the county metrics for case rates and percent positivity. “It does help that we’re not moving from Moderate to Extreme Risk,” Tillamook County Community Health Centers Administrator Marlene Putman said during a Tillamook County Board of Commissioners meeting Wednesday, April 7. “It takes some pressure off our local businesses and restaurants.” Specific impacts for moving into High Risk include: businesses operating with reduced hours, indoor social gatherings are decreased to six people; outdoor social gatherings are limited to eight people; indoor dining is available and not to exceed 25 percent capacity; indoor recreation and fitness establishments, and indoor entertainment establishments have a max of 25 percent capacity or 50 people; retail stores and indoor and outdoor shopping centers/malls have a max capacity of 50 percent and encourage curbside pickup; faith institutions have an indoor max of 25 percent capacity or 150 people with a 200 max for outdoor; offices should recommend remote work is able; and outdoor recreation and fitness establishments, and outdoor entertainment establishments have a max of 75 people. Putman said Tillamook County has had 553 positive COVID-19 cases, to date. The county is at a steady increase, although should be staying at High Risk or moving down to Moderate Risk if cases decrease in two weeks. Brown announced April 6 that all Oregonians over the age of 16 would be eligible to sign up for a COVID-19 vaccine beginning Monday, April 19. The health department is closely monitoring appointments that are available. There will be additional updates this week. As of Thursday, April 8, the online scheduling tol showed appointments available as early as Tuesday, April 20. COVID-19 testing is still available at no cost. Education: Graduate of Tillamook High School. I am a Certified Labor Relations Professional (CLRP), have a sHRBP certification, and a Certificate in Employment Law, IAML Family: I am married to my wife, Kelsey, and we have two boys, Clayton, 12 and attends East Elementary and Cody, who is 9 and attends South Prairie Elementary. Why are you running for Tillamook School District Director, position 1? I have always had a passion for public education and have been a supporter of our schools and their programs, from Charity Drive to FFA to elementary fundraising, boosters, and scholarships. Like most families, we all
west coast so we are able to see them frequently throughout the year (unless it’s a Covid year). Why are you running for Tillamook School District Director, position 1? I want to bring my lifelong experience as an advocate to help make a difference in the lives of our students, our teachers and the staff of School District #9. My life and work experiences will help me positively contribute to the Board. Our public schools are a service to our community by providing solid education and so much more — sports programs, extracurriculars, structure, and for some, the healthiest meals they get in a day. Through my 15 years as a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) representing kids in the Child Welfare System in Tillamook County, I understand first-hand that every kid needs tools to succeed. I will work tirelessly to deliver on this as a School Board Director. What experience/skills do you have that makes you the best candidate? Advocate: Currently, I advocate for victims of crimes in Tillamook County, and as a CASA, I advocate for kids in the child welfare system. Professional: In my career in human resources, I worked collaboratively with many different people in order to successfully resolve conflicts.
Through this, I have experience developing creative solutions to complex problems. Board Service: I serve on the Foundation Board of Tillamook Bay Community College and have served on four other Boards in Tillamook County: Tides of Change, Master Gardeners, AAUW, and the Citizen’s Review. Volunteer Service: Throughout my life, I have volunteered in the classrooms and with after school activities. I’ve served on four Scholarship Committees for organizations in Tillamook County. Now I want to put my volunteer energy into helping all students in Tillamook have the tools and opportunities that serve their unique needs and assure their success. What is the school district’s biggest challenge and how will you overcome it? Of course, the biggest challenge right now is getting our students, teachers and staff back into the classroom safely and full-time. As a member of the Board, I’ll work collaboratively with all stakeholders, and within the CDC and state guidelines, to make the transition back to in-person learning as smooth as possible. Distance learning has been very hard on the kids, and for some even more than others. I pledge to work with the Board to make sure there are ways for each child to get the support they need to succeed.

I started thinking about seeking a seat last spring; after some consideration, I decided last October to run in this election. I strongly believe the school board should be made up of people who want to serve and are in it for our children and the next generation of kids. I am a firm believer in doing what is right, and I am not afraid to make tough decisions when it is the right thing to do. I also believe in complete transparency because parents and educators alike deserve to understand the School Boards rationale for the decision’s they make. What experience/skills do you have that makes you the best candidate? While education is a large part of the board’s responsibility, they also oversee the budget, policy making, and human resource responsibilities. In addition to my passion for public education, I have experience in these other critical areas as well. I have managed and overseen large multi-million-dollar budgets. I serve as a Trustee on a Health--Welfare and Pension Trusts that oversees 10’s of millions of dollars collectively in funds and benefits. Also, I am passionate about people. We have some of the best educators, educational assistants, admin staff, technicians, and support staff, and I want to make sure that they
are heard and felt cared for. I understand recruitment, retention, and what it takes to be a top-notch employer. Lastly, as a parent of children in TSD9, I know firsthand the challenges we face around how their education is delivered currently and the transition back to full-time in-person learning. What is the school district’s biggest challenge, and how will you overcome it? There are a few significant challenges that lie ahead for our district. The first, is getting our kids back to full-time in-person learning, while assessing how much the achievement gap has widened. The district needs to prepare and plan for addressing the needs of all students and how to successfully get them back on track. I will work tirelessly alongside our administration to ensure that our staff are equipped with the resources they need, not only for a smooth transition, but with ways in which to evolve our educational methods. Additionally, the district faces hiring and retention challenges. I will work hard to ensure that we have a strategic hiring and retention policy that works! Tillamook community is a wonderful place to live. With the right plan, we can create a destination district to attract and increase our top educators, and staff’s retention that represent our students and their demographics.

I am interested in continuing in my position on the school board because I would like to give back to the community and the school district that has given to my children
for real world living. Well thought out, fiscally responsible and objective decisions that help make a difference in all of our lives are important to me. What experience/skills do you have that makes you the best candidate? My diverse background helps qualify me for becoming a school board member. Decision making, budgeting, comparisons, and direct communication are skills I am versed in. I have served leadership roles on several state and local boards where these skills were integral to success. Additionally, my husband and I owned/operated our own farm before joining my family on our dairy. This gave me hands-on experience with fiscal responsibility, time and employee management, regulations and economics. Currently I write procedures and policies, manage employee training and accounting on our family farm. Perhaps my passion for providing an opportunity for quality, hands-on, real world education for all our children is what qualifies me most. I believe in choices for our students and thinking outside of the box for solutions that
work for all. I am committed to learning experiences that will help our students succeed in life no matter which path they follow. What is the school district’s biggest challenge and how will you overcome it? Where our students are at academically, emotionally, and physically is one of my greatest concerns. I believe a strategic plan is needed to achieve forward strides as quickly as possible. I want all students to be in as normal a schedule and environment as we can provide. I believe in choices for families and would like to see students filling our schools full time and the virtual academy continue for those who so choose. This pandemic has created division in our schools. Unexpected change and uncharted territory has caused a lot of uncertainty in our students, faculty and staff family. Our employees need to be appreciated and valued as part of the team in charge of changing kids’ lives. These relationships need cultivated and healed so we can continue to push ourselves forward, working together to do what is ultimately best for our students.

I do not know that I am the best candidate but I do feel like my current role on the board gives me some insight as to how the board functions. I also feel that my experience at ODHS and my previous healthcare experience gives me specific experience and knowledge of Oregon Administrative rules and laws. I am used to reading, interpreting and relaying policy. In addition, I feel that as a black person who is married to a white man and has biracial children, I believe that I can bring a unique perspective to the board. What is the school district’s biggest challenge and how will you overcome it? Currently, the biggest
challenge is the state of emergency due to Covid. I believe that our district has done an excellent job of supporting our administrators and students in returning to school. The level of care that has been given to ensure the safety of all has been tremendous. For instance, the one way directions in the schools, the hand washing stations, the temperature checks. These are just a few of the things that I have seen firsthand as a liaison. The option to continue going virtually for those students and/or parents who are not comfortable with returning is amazing as well. Honestly, there is nothing that I would do or think that can be done to “overcome” the school’s biggest challenge at this moment. The continued social distancing practices and conscious awarenesses that are already put in place are to be commended.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR I’m supporting Hogan-Heimerl for School Board I am writing this as a letter of recommendation on behalf of Becky Hogan-Heimerl, a candidate for Position 2 of the Tillamook School Board. I have had the good fortune of being a life-long friend of Becky’s. She is a respected member of our community who is trustworthy, honest and kind. As a mom of children who attend Tillamook School District #9, I can’t think of anyone I would rather have representing my family, as well as the faculty and staff of our district. It is extremely important to carefully choose school board members. Becky is very passionate about the education of students, along with ensuring faculty and staff feel valued. She works diligently to make our children’s lives more enriched. From volunteering in the schools, to starting a cloverbud 4-H club, sitting on committes and working behind the scenes to help those in need, Becky stops at nothing to give back to her community. I have watched Becky in leadership rolls through
high school, college and now our professional years. She leads with a balanced and fair approach. She does what is right and will make the hard decisions. Becky will value our traditions, while striving for excellence. Becky and her husband have four young children and as such, has a vested interest in the success of our students as they move through the schools of district #9. Becky will bring many positive attributes to the school board. She will be an amazing asset to the boards many duties. Her willingness to lead a life of service is second to none. I’m supporting Manderson and Troxel for School Board As a Tillamook School Board member for 10 years, and Board Chair for the last 2 years, I wanted to share my first-hand
experience working with Eva Manderson and Nick Troxel. Both of these Board Members deserve to be reelected in May. With 7 years of Board experience, Eva brings a quiet and steady leadership to the Board. Her expertise in Early Childhood Education is invaluable as we serve our youngest students. Eva asks questions and digs deeper to get to the heart of issues. Eva directed the recruitment process for current Superintendent Curt Shelley, one of the Board’s primary responsibilities. Curt has demonstrated that he is a strong and kind leader over the last difficult year and has made decisions based on scientific data and a regard for students and staff. Because Eva said, “I want to know more”, we have a Statewide Executive leader at the helm of our District. I have known Nick Troxel through Rotary for 12 years. He’s been a School Board member for the last 3 years. Nick has taken a leadership role in the Superintendent annual evaluation process and also was a part of the District committee who reviewed all of our District

lear your calendar and rev your engines for June 26: The 64th annual June Dairy Parade is a-go, though it will once again be inside out. The parade theme will be “As the World Churns.” (Fitting, we think, for how our community keeps trekking along despite any of last year’s obstacles.) We looked at every angle possible for hosting a traditional parade, but based on current state guidelines and OSHA enforcement, there’s simply no way to line our streets with the some-20,000 parade spectators that usually show up to watch. So instead, entries will stage along a parade route, and spectators will drive through to enjoy the floats, dancers, and other festivities. Although we are eager for the days when we can return to a traditional parade style, we’ve found that the inside out model is a good temporary substitute. Last year more than 400 cars showed up to drive through the
parade route, which consisted of approximately 50 entries staged for nearly a mile. As cars drove through, parade entries passed out candy, cheese, jerky and other goodies from a safe distance, so none of the snacks or swag you’re used to was missing! Both participants and entries had a great time. And as a testament to our success, a handful of other cities in the region reached out to us for tips on hosting their own inside out parade. We’ve become an example for how to hold fun and safe community celebrations during the pandemic! Of course, we are always looking for ways to improve.
This year we will start the parade at 10 a.m., an hour earlier than usual, to avoid the increased traffic on Pacific and Main that caused some delays last year. We’re planning to block additional roads along the route to ensure that vehicles can get through the parade in a timely fashion, as well as adding measures to reduce the waittime at the fairgrounds. We’ll have more on the specifics as June 26 gets closer. We also hope to grow the number of entries and participants this year to make the inside out parade bigger and better than before. So break out your globes or butter-making equipment, get creative, and help us celebrate all things dairy! After all, the dairy industry is a big deal here in Tillamook. If you would like to be a staged entry in the 2021 June Dairy Parade, please submit your application by May 31 at junedairyparade.com. HAPPENINGS AT HANGER B Next, I will try to explain from the history what makes this huge rigid Airships do its job. Hangar ‘B’ was designed to hold up to 8 Series ‘K’ blimps, according to pictures. They were all fueled with hydrogen to give the structure the ability to lift and maneuver. The Blimp Squadron ZP-33 was commissioned on December 1, 1942. World War ll was coming to an end, August 43, cutbacks on Airships was set in motion.. However, the Airships continued to be useful for all domestic ships as observers to assist and protect them. Japan was also a threat. The Airships also heled us identify their fireballs and shoot them out of the air. One of them may have gotten away, due to a forest fire in 1945. It was in the middle of the forest. At that time, no other reason for the fire. OOPS, ‘chasing rabbits’ I wanted to tell you about the maned part of the Airship. Eight to 10 crew members operated the Airship and maned the 50 caliber guns, mounted in the extreme forward upper section of the
car. The compartment was 215.7 feet long, 79 feet high and 62.5 feet wide. I need to tell you about a current emergency that is happening with Hangar ‘B’. Not only does it leak over 400 gallons during heavy rain fall, the severe wind storms we have had this winter is causing big parts of the hanger to blow off. The BIGGER problem is the front doors. They do not open properly. Hangar ‘B’ is a National Treasure and it is the only building of its kind to open to the public. Naval Air Station Tillamook played a pivotal role in defending the United States homeland during world war ll. The Tillamook Air Museum provides priceless educational opportunities for learners of all ages in both our community, the state of Oregon and beyond. After 70 years of service in the harsh climate of Tillamook, Hangar ‘B’ needs our help or it will not survive for future generations. One of our goals is to seek large Grants, but, what are WE doing, while we WAIT? Just sitting on our hands and waiting? The Grants may be too late. She knew a family, last name Wyss, that owned property in the vicinity of Long Prairie Road and Hwy. 101 (not sure if it was a home or a farm) the family was very sad about being forced to sell their property. Fays husband Bub was overseas fighting for our freedom. She remembers seeing the rail cars coming through Bay City loaded with finished rafter beams on their way to the building site for the Hangars. NOTE: There is a railroad track in Hangar ‘B’ with a train on it today. Also, Fay shared with me that her parents own and worked the 24 hour restaurant on 2nd Street and what is now Main. Business was good! The Naval Air Station, Tillamook added to our economy. Also, I will add to this. The Navy built all the small 2 bedroom homes in that subdivision on 9th Street, Manor Place, Elm Avenue. Those homes are still in very good condition due to people taking care of the them. pring building projects are budding out in Cape Meares. Pete Parks is currently redoing the siding and deck on his family’s home on 3rd St. NW, as well as installing new windows (he says a new garage door and gutters will come later this spring). Guy Kyle and his wife, Stacy Mason, have the outline of their new home on 6th St. NW staked out. Steve Walz just finished an elk-impermeable fence around his side yard. Fun to see what’s going on and up in the neighborhood! Glorying in being fully vaccinated against COVID, Captain Pete took his drift
boat and Steve Walz, a vaccinated fellow fisherman, out steelheading on one of the last sunny days before April showers. They drifted the lower section of the Wilson River, above tidewater. The duo put in at 9:30 a.m. instead of 6:30 a.m. to miss any crowds; they called it right, as there were only two other boats on the water. Despite it being quite late in the winter steelhead season, Steve hooked a fish mid-drift—but it got off. Still, some action and some sunshine; the fishermen were happy enough with that. t’s Earth Day next week. Many events planned to celebrate the Golden Anniversary of the first (April 22, 1970) Earth Day, last year were canceled due to the Covid pandemic. Lincoln City will have a citywide “Garage Sale” this weekend. In years past, a map of participating sales was published in the local paper; I never found it necessary- signs directed traffic onto most side streets from the highway. I have always filled whatever vehicle I was driving with treasures. Dozens of sales with thousands of finds. I bet you could fill a car just with freebies. ale and I have gotten our Johnson & Johnson vaccines and are now waiting our 14 days and then we will venture out a bit more. We have gotten an amazing amount of work done at our cabin. We have sold, donated and gifted to family so much of our stuff. Moving from our big house to our small house forced us to clean house, and it feels really good. One thing that has really made a difference with our remodeling has been our new doors from Bay View Door Millwork CO Inc. We are so happy with our door and they were so awesome to work
with. Yes, because of the pandemic, it takes a while, but the quality is so much better than just buying an ‘off the shelf’ door. We highly recommend this company. We are so thrilled with our doors. Easter with Amber was absolutely hopping! I, the Sugar Bunny was at Simply Charming and The Little White Church, and Amber took videos and pictures. It was so much fun and both businesses had delightful surprises for the kids! All and all, a great time was had by all. We attended an online Easter service too. It isn’t the same, but we wanted to be reminded of why we celebrate Easter.

Have you checked out the refurbished piers in Garibaldi recently? The Lumber pier, down to the left midway through town, has been converted into an accessible dock for fishing, crabbing and picnicking, with several picnic tables
available. There are marvelous, colorful educational signs about salmon, crab, shellfish, and estuaries posted along the walkway to the pier. You may toss your fishing line or crab pot over the side and enjoy a beautiful view of Tillamook Bay while waiting for action. To access the second pier, go farther west in Garibaldi and turn left on 12th St. to reach the parking lot for the Coast Guard Boathouse. The Oregon Coast train might whistle by as you get out of your car. Right as you step onto the pier, a stairway down to the right takes you
to the clam beds, where you may rake for cockles or dig little neck clams, horse neck clams, or varnish clams. Or you may wish to continue walking straight on out the pier and step into one of several turnouts for crabbing. The Coast Guard Boathouse at the end of the pier is interesting to check out; it’s open weekends, noon-6 p.m., admission by donation. A sign proclaims that the boathouse is a historic landmark, “the last of its kind on the Oregon Coast.” Take a day this spring to have some outdoor fun in Garibaldi!

Well folks, it is time to update what is going on with ‘Hal.’ He is now the oldest member of the Nehalem Bay Fire and Rescue. He is the District Photographer, photographing pictures of their accidents, fires and training. He puts them on discs for the depart-
ment and sends pictures to the Headlight Herald too! And Hal will turn 80 years young on June 10th. He is now taking a bit of time off because he had heart valve surgery on April 12th. board? You bet! But before you start worrying that county money is being spent on dog treats, let me assure you that the bookmobile staff pays for these doggie snacks out of their own pockets! If I sing the praises of dogs, I guess I better say something nice about the people who board our bus, too. We have served some of these homesteads for decades and they let their appreciation be known. It is not uncommon for some of our country visitors to come to the bus with small, friendly tokens of appreciation such as a cup of freshly brewed coffee, a slice of pie, or even a veggie omelet, hot from the stove. While I have occasion-
ally been grilled by a county resident on why we need a bookmobile when we have six libraries around the county, what I try to help them realize is not everyone has the luxury of being able to hop in a car and drive to a library. Those in care centers, those obligated to the critical timing of dairy farm operations, and the many classes full of school children are a few examples of patrons who would not have library service, if not for the muchanticipated bookmobile visits. I am happy and proud to give three big cheers for the bookmobile and the brave drivers who get to experience both the joys and the perils of driving the big blue bus!

As Board members, we need to stay aware of the fact that schools are a foundation in our community and that decisions affect students, families and business owners. We provide support for our school leaders in these decision-making processes TSD9 has led Tillamook County in getting kids back to school, all the while balancing the variety of interests in every decision. I’m thankful for the work that all our employees and specifically Superintendent Shelley do on a daily basis. The path ahead of us continues to pose challenges and I urge you to consider experience and the steep learning curve ahead for new Board members as you cast your vote. This position requires commitment, an open mind, confidentiality and an ability to think bigger – at the policy level. It requires an ability to develop relationships with a variety of people and to
listen to viewpoints which may differ from our own. Eva and Nick are solid contributors who have earned my vote.

elcome to part two of the joys and perils of driving the bookmobile. Last week, we covered the scary stuff, so this week, we will conclude with the many delights we experience on the bookmobile route. One of my favorites is visiting the folks in the care centers. They are some of
the most grateful patrons we serve. So many of these residents look to “bookmobile day” as the highlight of their week, sometimes waiting by the door to watch for our arrival. This certainly makes us feel appreciated. Plus, you never know what is going to come out of their mouths. I remember one spry greyhaired lady who wanted my help with a book selection. She said, “I want one of those love storybooks…but not
too spicy. My heart can only handle so much!” Another favorite time is visiting schools and daycare centers, offering storytimes for the children every chance we get. We currently cannot offer this service because of social distancing, but having 20 kids sitting on the floor of the bookmobile to listen to a story is a magical sight that always makes my heart very happy. Someday, we will gather like this again because these school visits aboard the bookmobile make some very strong memories and impressions on young minds. How do I know this? One of my favorite parts of bringing the bus to the county fair each year is seeing the faces of the adult fairgoers who pop their

We need incumbent Jack Boom on the North County Recreation District Board of Directors. He is our go to member on the new pool construction project that includes bond and funding. This is not the time to change board members. Jack has been on the point on all the improvements we have made. The parking lot and the enter way remodel, the renovation of the theater, and the new theater lobby with ADA restroom, are just some to mention. OBITUARIES Adell Louise Woodruff (Oldenkamp) May 8, 1944 - March 28, 2020
A
dell Louise Woodruff (Oldenkamp) was born May 8, 1944 in Spokane Washington to Evelyn and William Woodruff. A Spirit far ahead of her time and a soul deeply loving and vivacious to all she came into contact with, she has left a chasm in the hearts of those she left behind. To attempt to distil her life in words is like trying to put the ocean in a paper cup. Her family apologizes this Memorial Obituary is a year late, yet it is a testament to the great devastation caused by her sudden passing in Klamath Falls on March 28, 2020. She was 75 years of age. She wanted to live forever. She spent her childhood years with her older brother Donald in Coeur d’Alene and Hayden Lake Idaho. Her parents taught her to love people from all walks of life and she saw the best in everyone. This love of humanity is one of her most endearing qualities. With a self-proclaimed “Bambi Complex” she also had a soft spot for any animal that came upon her path, always adopting any stray in need of a good meal and soft touch. She constantly brought in abandoned kittens from the barn and was proud of having never lost a single calf in all the family’s years of farming. She reminisced of innocent days spent scrapbooking while listening to Elvis records and dreaming of their future together. She rode her horse Coco around the lake with her father and spent time with a close group of friends with whom she enjoyed lifelong friendships. Like a Goddess she was a tanned olive complected beauty with long dark brown hair and at 6 feet was a sight to behold. After graduating high school she completed a course at The New England School for Modern Dance in Conneticut. While there she broke her leg but believed it happened for a greater purpose for on the way to class on crutches she gave lifesaving CPR to a man who collapsed near her. Upon her return to Idaho she enjoyed weekends dancing with her friends at Rascelers Bar. She was a perfectionist in her studies and pursued a nursing degree, until she had her first sight of blood. She then changed course to

cleaning the milking parlor and taking care of all the calves on the farm. She took great care to make healthy and yummy meals instilling in us the value of a homecooked meal, leaving us with fond memories of being nurtured by her creations-no recipe could match. Birthdays were extra special due to her great care in choosing gifts on a budget, making 10 lb cakes and allowing us to have our once a year soda pop and “sugar cereal” of our choice. She made life magical for us despite suffering an almost fatal brain aneurysm in 1984. If we were separated from her in the grocery store we would just need to listen for her joyful laugh floating over the aisles. In summer she would create complex and extravagant “treasure hunts” where we would spend countless hours searching the acreage for the next clue and location of a trove of goodies. She involved us in 4-H with every farm animal we had and taught us the value of nurturing the underdog animals. She spent the bulk of her life loving and supporting us. Our family experienced many challenges and tragedies. She was there for each of us-in person, with love and a shoulder for our tears. From car accidents, cancer, friends deaths to financial struggles she was our Rock-there to provide basic life needs-cooking, cleaning, crocheted scarves and blankets-and above all laughter. She gave us the skill to save lives and nurture our friends. She gave us the love of music, sports, humor, dark coffee, thrift stores, dancing, growing plants, books, animals and people. Each time I would leave her house she would say “Is there anything of mine you want?” and I would always

teaching, getting a Master’s Degree in Physical Education from the University of Idaho. To help pay for her education she worked for the airlines as a ticket agent and turned her creative talents towards making drift wood macrame and other crafts to earn extra income. She moved to Tillamook Oregon in 1973 to pursue her teaching career at Tillamook Catholic School where she enjoyed the love of her students while teaching basketball, ballroom dance, bowling, croquet, and any other physical game she could. She was not afraid to learn new sports and proudly told the story of how she and her class learned fencing together. This created a strong bond with her students and was indicative of her humble nature and willingness to grow. She thrived off the joy of teaching and made lifelong friends with her students but her largest sense of joy and her deepest fulfillment came through her children, which she gave her all. She gave birth to her first child Evelyn Adell Costello on June 10, 1970 and her second William Woodruff Weatherby on September 14, 1973. She met Gary R. Oldenkamp in the summer of 1974 and was married to him February 14, 1975. They welcomed their first child Jennie Ray Oldenkamp April 1, 1975 and their second child Sophia Christine Oldenkamp March 17, 1977. Having her as a mother was a blessing on so many levels. The power of her love and her keen care in making us feel so special is a hallmark to her character. She left teaching to raise her children and to support her husband in the farming industry. She got her “hydro-therapy”
say “Just your love mom.” Her love extended to her grandchildren (Bailey and Nina Bundy, Abigail Devita, Tucker Oldenkamp) in which much happiness was exchanged. Laughter was their common bond. As Mrs. Oldenkamp, or “the hat lady” to her students, she was loved as a substitute teacher for her non-judgemental nature and her ability to understand the plight of the teenager. She was a shoulder to cry on, a jokester to make one laugh or teach a life lesson and a supporter of hopes and dreams. She crocheted hundreds of custom colored hats for her students which became a fashion trend and provided the comfort of the love of a teacher and friend. Those hats are still in circulation in the community, along with many a funny story about her. She participated in activities for the Doernbecher’s Charity Drive, a charity close to her heart because her grandaughter was a recipient of the Childrens Hospital care. Her most notable act was a jello wrestling tournament with her dear friend Harry Hewitt. Later in life she took care of both her parents, crocheted hundreds of hats for people with cancer, wrote every politian she could find an address for, gave to those in need, read books, had a very green thumb giving away hundreds of plant starts, complimented strangers and friends alike and participated in Sons of Norway. She always left folks with a sense of joy and sore stomachs from the laughter she inspired. In Klamath Falls she was the highlight of clothing exchanges, weekend BBQ’s and family activities. Adell Woodruff created laughter and love with all she did and her spirit lives on within each of us children. She is deeply missed and shall be honored in the love we share with others. ichard Lane Burlingame, of Scappoose, Garibaldi, and Libby Montana, passed away on January 15, 2021, at the home of Vern and Patty Burlingame. Rick was born in Compton, California, on August 17, 1944, the third child of Harold Vernon and Edith Lyle Conway Burlingame. His father Harold worked in the shipyards of nearby Long Beach during World War II, and after the war the family moved to some land Harold had bought in the Antelope Valley, northeast of Los Angeles. Harold built a shop and large house on the property while working construction in the area, and Rick, his sister Jerri, and his older brother Vernon all attended school there up through high school at Palmdale High. Rick did most of his growing up on the desert, but it was the sea that he loved. He joined the Navy mid way through high school, and after a four year stint he joined the merchant marine and spent several years as a fireman on freighters in the South China Sea, sailing the waters of Thailand and Vietnam. He had many good stories of adventures in southeast Asia, and when he’d get back to the States he’d buy a car and head for Las Vegas, not always coming back with the car. But in 1969 he decided it was time to settle down, and he married the love of his life, Linda Diane Varner, and soon after their son David Lee was born they headed north, thinking of Alaska but finding Portland a pretty good place for a young family. Son Samuel was born in 1974, about the time Rick
started working at Oregon Steel. Over the next 30 years Rick hunted and fished and sailed sailboats and fishing boats all around the Columbia River and offshore. He and Linda moved to Scappoose and lived on a floating home and made many friends in that tight-knit community. In 2003 Linda passed away, and not long after, Rick retired from Oregon Steel and moved to Garibaldi, where he could fish and crab, and walk the docks. After a couple years there he felt it was time to get a little closer to family, and moved to Libby, Montana, where his brother Vern and Vern’s wife Patty had a nice home near the Kootenai River. He settled in close by and they had several years of good fishing and good stories before a sudden diagnosis of cancer slowed him down. He was a stand-up guy to the end, much loved, and will be much missed. He is survived by sons David Lee of Cuyahoga, Ohio, and Sam of Aurora, Colorado; grandson Raymond; brothers Vernon, of Libby, Montana, and Ron, of Portland, Oregon; sister Jerrilyn Gibson of Rocklin, California, and Cathy Walker of Round Rock, Texas; nieces and nephews Efram Burlingame, Sara Burlingame, Connie Gibson, Janet Greutert, Sarah Burlingame, Evan Burlingame, Stella Burlingame, Anne Burlingame, Haley Walker, and many grand-nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held June 19, 2021 in Libby Montana, at the Fred Brown Pavillion. Friends and family are invited to attend. Rick will be interred at the Willamette National Cemetery in Portland at a later date. Friends and family are invited to pay their respects. Call for Volunteers to serve as Trail Ambassadors

his spring, Trailkeepers of Oregon, Mt. Hood and Columbia River Gorge Regional Tourism Alliance, Oregon Coast Visitors Association, U.S. Forest Service, and Oregon State Parks are kicking off another season of the Trail Ambassador Program to equip Columbia River Gorge, Mt. Hood and North Coast visitors with information they need for a safe, informed, and positive experience when hiking in the region. The Trail Ambassador 2021 season will kick-off on April 24th and Trailkeepers of Oregon is currently seeking volunteers. Volunteer Trail Ambassadors will be placed at some of the busiest trailheads in the Mt. Hood National Forest, the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, and North Oregon Coast. Volunteers will have the opportunity to table at trailheads and hike the trails on weekends during peak season. Volunteers will engage with the public to answer hiking and recreation related questions, promote responsible hiker ethics like “Leave No Trace,” and steer people to useful resources like OregonHikers.org and ReadySetGorge.com. Arica Sears, the Deputy Director for the Oregon Coast Visitors Association, has been integral to bringing the Ambassador program to the coast. She notes, “The Trail and Beach Ambassadors provided an invaluable asset to the visitor experience last year by sharing localized messages and opportunities to visitors. This program supported coastal destinations during a time when businesses and agencies had reduced hours and capacity to communicate with visitors and will be a helpful part of Oregon’s reopening process this summer.”
Volunteers can look forward to volunteering at multiple trails in the Gorge as well. “We are excited to continue our partnership with TKO’s Trail Ambassadors. Despite significant challenges over the past year, their unwavering commitment to building, restoring, and maintaining hiking trails has been remarkable,” said Christy Cheyne, Forest Supervisor. “Trail Ambassadors will continue to be pivotal in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area.” “Last year, Trail Ambassadors from TKO helped both rangers and visitors within state parks by sharing info about trail conditions and Leave No Trace practices. Efforts like these help keep people safer, and help keep the trails in better shape, too. We appreciate the efforts of all of the Volunteers as we navigated the changes brought by 2020’s Covid 19 pandemic. Directions 1. Bring 4 cups water to boil in a 2 to 3 quart saucepan. Add noodles, cover, and remove from heat (do not add flavor packets). Wait one minute, drain noodles and set aside. 2. In a small saucepan, combine peanut butter, soy sauce, and 1/2 cup water. Heat over low heat, stirring until smooth. Remove from heat. 3. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat (350 degrees in an electric skillet). Add chicken and cook until no longer pink when cut, about 3 to 5 minutes. 4. Add red pepper, ginger,

Eva S. Manderson 48 years old Occupation: Early Childhood Education - Administration. In 2015 I started at NW Regional ESD within the Early Learning Hub. Over the last 6 years I supported numerous projects including: the implementation of Preschool Promise Programs, kindergarten readiness grants (including Kindercamps) and bringing greater resources to
early learning professionals and child care. As the Child Care Resource and Referral Director, I lead collaborative efforts to support child care providers and community leaders. Throughout COVID my team has worked to support child care providers with meeting changing health and safety guidelines and also obtain emergency grant funding. We have continued our usual work to increase the supply of quality in child care programs and deliver professional development to individual providers. Currently my teams are leading cohorts of professionals to deepen their child development knowledge, increase the quality of their learning environments and strengthen their business practices. Education: After high school I obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Science from Washington State University. After WSU, I continued to pursue opportunities to learn. I’ve taken hundreds of
hours of training for a variety of pursuits beyond college and believe that those opportunities have benefited me and those I worked for and volunteered with far beyond just my college degree. I’ve completed training to be a wildland firefighter, firefighter 1, emergency medical technician, personal trainer and exercise specialist. I have the hours nearly equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education and am currently taking leadership training and Spanish. For anyone wanting to practice language with me, Yo hablo un poco en español. Family: While at WSU, I met my husband Alex, who was doing an agricultural exchange program at WSU. Alex is from New Zealand, another place in the world with a lot of dairy cows! We moved to our family to Tillamook in 2005. Brock is a Junior at THS.Through COVID he took the opportunity to take several classes at TBCC. He enjoys soccer, track and surfing. He plans to attend OSU when he graduates. Outside of my regular work, I’m committed to my family, lifelong learning, and service to my community. Besides serving on school board, I’ve served on the Tillamook United Way Board of Directors, Tillamook Wellness Task Force and a variety of short term committees and volunteer positions that have allowed me to listen to and learn from the members of our community. In my first years as a board member I had a LOT to learn and I’m continuing to learn about how I can best serve our students. The work of giving back on behalf of kids and
community motivates me. The work is not done yet – likely never will be – and I want to continue to work. I love people, love learning, love service. This is why I work hard for Tillamook School Board What experience/skills do you have that makes you the best candidate? I bring 7 years of experience and a balanced approach to the school board. In my first years as a board member I had a LOT to learn and I continue to learn. Without curiosity to continuously learn, I could not have been successful as a board member. Board members are the gatherers of experiences and information from our community. The most important roles of a school board member are to set the tone and direction of the school district and to support the superintendent. As a board member and board chair I’ve done that by leading an effective Assistant Superintendent search in 2017, transitioning an Assistant Superintendent to Superintendent in 2018 and supporting the writing of new board goals in
2018. Our board goals focus on people: communicating with people, recruiting and retaining people, supporting achievement of people, prioritizing wellness of people, understanding and valuing perspectives of all people. What is the school district’s biggest challenge and how will you overcome it? This year this has been harder than ever. Our children need their teachers, they need high quality education, they need safety. Our teachers need their students, they need time to develop new and different skills, they need safety. Balancing different needs and views of students, families, and teachers across our community. This is the biggest challenge that I think our schools could continue to face as we try to regain time in school and in person for learning. We need to bring people together in a supportive way that gives options to families and values all people. I hope that the community will vote for kids - vote for balance on the school board in the next election.

Why are your running for Tillamook School District Director, position 3?
Recently, I’ve become concerned with the direction our schools are taking. As just a couple of examples, I believe we’ve gotten off track with our curriculum in recent years and also our handling of Covid as a whole in our schools. Balance is a great word; we’ve gotten out of balance. Based on CDC and OHA data, I firmly believe that our schools should have been fully open with no restrictions many months ago. Students need to be active to be healthy, that applies to both physical and mental health. The data simply does not support continued, restricted school activity. State mandates dictate much of this, but our local school board also has input into these decisions. What experience/skills do you have that makes you the best candidate? With 12 years in ministry, serving 5 years on a church board and several years working a small sales business, I have developed the people skills and experience that it takes for the give and take of solving and addressing challenges in our school district alongside other board members and school leadership. Having grown up in our community and raising my family here, I have a broad knowledge of our local
culture and the needs of local students and staff. Ideas/policies that may work for school districts in large urban areas will not work for our small, rural community. We need to recognize that difference. What is the school district’s biggest challenge and how will you overcome it? There are certainly many challenges that need to be continually addressed to make sure our students and staff are getting their needs met and have the best opportunities moving forward. Our young people need an education with a solid academic base and a rich extracurricular schedule that builds and develops skills to help them navigate decision making in a free America, which is full of opportunity to those willing work hard to realize their dreams. It seems lately these values are now in question, and my concern for all students is that they continue to understand liberty and freedom, and ultimately have the opportunity to pursue their dreams and THRIVE. Because I’m retired, I now have an abundance of time to dive into opportunities and solutions.
What experience/skills do you have that makes you the best candidate? I’ve acquired a lifetime of skill sets in all of the different roles in my life. Leadership on sports teams as a young person to coaching kids of all ages in football to teaching at our district’s alternative school, Wilson River School, to small business owner, and most importantly my roles as a husband, father and grandfather have all helped hone skills most needed for this Board position. I am a current Director on the PUD Board so understand board work and teamwork. Communication skills are key with listening to be at the top of the skill
list. Knowing how to listen and hear all sides of an issue is imperative to solving challenges. A strong work ethic is important to me. I don’t give up or quit on a difficult task, but rather consider it a challenge to keep working toward a solution in an everchanging environment. What is the school district’s biggest challenge and how will you overcome it? Everyone’s life has been upended this past year. I don’t think we have a firm grasp yet of all of the repercussions it will have on our students. We have to come together as a team: Board, Administration, Teachers, Classified, Parents, and
Community to get students back to school full time so they can thrive again academically, emotionally and socially. Going forward, what do we envision for our students? What do they need? How can we make District #9 student-centered? In high school history class in 1970, our teacher said, “our greatest natural resource isn’t how many trees we have, or fish in the ocean, or how much cheese we produce-our greatest resource is our people and our kids are our future.” Schools truly are the key to freedom in America and the only way we preserve and save our Republic is with an educated electorate.

Of course, restarting the school year and making up the deficiencies that the pandemic has created is the first one. Many children will need extra support and anything the board can do
to support these students and staff are top priority for me. In addition, with the new elementary school building, staff and students will be moving to the K-8 and the high school will fall back to being 9-12 grade. Each move will create issues and successes for each school. Understanding these changes will be very important. I was on staff when we closed Beaver and had 7-8 students come to the high school building. This has been a year of total disruption, beginning again will bring forth new issues that one can only guess at. I feel my input can be helpful.

Since 2017, I have been very active within the local community and the school district. I have been a part of the Nestucca Valley School Board Budget Committee since 2017, therefore I feel like that experience and knowledge will lend itself to moving onto the school board as a director. I have also connected with the district’s youth through athletics as a coach, as well as volunteering. I am also a current board member of the South Tillamook County Emergency Volunteer Corp., which I feel is a unique opportunity to provide insight to the school board to ensure we are both prepared, and educated, on emergency preparedness. Lastly, I feel the education of our youth is of vital importance and I know I can be a valuable advocate for our children, our parents and our community members. What is the school district’s biggest challenge and how will you overcome it? We live in an ever-changing world and now, more than ever, we are forced to quickly adapt to the changing environment that is our
schools. Moving forward, I feel schools will continue to be impacted by change, both societal and economical. I can bring a positive voice to embracing change and working to find positive outcomes for our children and our community that will continue to offer a highquality educational experience. I
t was a pretty tough year last year for the Tillamook County Master Gardener Association. Well, it was a pretty tough year for all of us. But nonprofit organizations like TCMGA took a real hit when all the fundraisers were cancelled for the year. This not only included the TCMGA’s every-otheryear garden tours, but also the Annual Plant Sale that we all look forward to each spring. It is embedded in my calendars every year that the Plant Sale happens on the first Saturday in May at the Tillamook County Fairgrounds. I used to love working that sale, with all the anxious gardeners coming in to start their plant shopping. It was fun talking to novice gardeners as well as experienced gardeners and help them choose the perfect plants for their yards. And the funds that are raised are used for gardening projects in the Learning Garden as well as scholarships. This year again, things have remained on hold for fundraisers until Oregon gets a report of fewer Covid cases. But those intrepid Master Gardeners have a plan. They want to have an online plant sale. This was sort of what happened last year, but this year they have had more a little time to get organized. As Plant Sale Chair Sarah Ostermiller tells me,
they will be taking orders through the Tillamook Master Gardeners website (tillamookmastergardeners.com). If you go to the “What’s New” tab, you will find a list of available plants and can order directly from the site using a credit card. Then they will schedule a time on either Friday, April 30, or Saturday, May 1, for you to pick up your plants. The MG’s hope to have about 300-400 tomatoes of 7 or 8 varieties this year as well as other veggie starts, some pollinator-friendly perennials and annual starts. There won’t be any native plants, garage sale or vendor sales available, though. The shopping list and online purchasing will be starting about April 18. There are not going to be any telephone orders available, so if you don’t
have a computer, ask an internet-savvy or Master Gardener friend to help you order. But don’t wait! The plants are available on a first-order, first-served basis. I do have another caveat. Since Tillamook County was moved to the Covid High Risk category last week,
the Master Gardeners may have to go to Plan B. At the time I am writing this column on April 7, they are not sure what exactly that will entail. So best to keep checking their website and Facebook pages for updates. On another topic, one would think that at my age I would have all the gardening tools I would need. The only things I would be purchasing at this point should be replacement tools. Alas, not so! I was watching a gardening video and - to be honest – I don’t even remember what it was about. I just remembered seeing the video’s host use a great tarp that had handles for carrying debris to the brush pile. Went online (still not comfortable doing much in-person shopping yet) and found just what I wanted. It is made of heavy-duty olive-green canvas with two very sturdy handles. But it also has eye-and-loop tape along the short sides so the tarp can easily be made into a basket or left open at the ends, depending on what I want to tote. Mine was about $20.00 plus shipping from Amazon. The other tool I found I couldn’t live without is a small rake. By small, I mean the tines’ spread is small – about 7” from side to side - but it still has a five-foot long handle. This has been really helpful getting leaves and sticks from around plants in the flower beds without damaging the plants themselves. I ordered this on-line as well for about $16 not including the shipping. And lastly for this week, I have started a new Facebook page entitled (what else?) “Gardening Matters.” I will use it to post more photos of my gardens as well as other lovely gardens in the area. I will also give tips and ideas as we go. It will be a good place to interact with me and other local gardeners and share photos of your own gardens. New ADA Transition Plan will guide Oregon State Parks improvement projects A
new Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Transition Plan guides Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD) in removing physical barriers to park access over the next 25 years. The ADA Transition Plan identifies barriers to parks and park programs for people with disabilities, and provides a roadmap for removing them. Identified barriers range from inaccessible picnic areas and restroom facilities to parking lots with limited accessible parking. The
plan calls for remediation efforts to begin in July 2021. “OPRD has already made great strides in providing access for people with disabilities, but there’s much more to be done,” said ADA Coordinator Helena Kesch. “The ADA Transition Plan moves the agency forward in improving parks so people with disabilities can enjoy them to the fullest. This aligns us with the law, and it’s also the right thing to do.” In the process of creating this
plan, OPRD surveyed 273 unique facilities and identified 4,872 individual barriers, then grouped them into categories defined by the level of complexity and cost. The agency posted a draft plan and solicited public comment Jan. 11 – Feb. 15, with options to comment online, by mail, by email or through a virtual hearing. The final plan is posted on OPRD’s Accessibility and Inclusion page at oregon.gov/oprd.

CARE, Inc. introduces new spring fundraising event The new CARE-A-Thon will be COVID-safe and socially distanced

ARE is excited to introduce its new spring fundraising event, the CARE-A-Thon run/walk to Knock Out Poverty! The CARE-A-Thon is based on the jog-a-thon/walka-thon concept, where participants will raise money by runnnig/ walking either a full marathon, or half-marathon, between May 1 and May 27. This event will be completed independently, with a live kick-off event on May 1 and a finale event on May 27. Both events will be available via livestream and in-person if conditions allow. Participation in a live event will require masks and social distancing. To register or to learn more about the 2021 CARE-A-Thon, you can visit the CARE website at www. careinc.org/donate. In 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, CARE was forced to announce the cancellation of the Annual Knock Down Poverty Bowl-A-Thon. After 15 successful years of raising funds to fight poverty in Tillamook County, it was sad to see this beloved event cancelled. With the pandemic still present in our community, the CARE Board of Directors decided, out of an abundance of caution, to discontinue the Bowl-A-Thon and replace it with an outdoor event that provides protection from COVID-19. Thus, the idea for the CARE-A-Thon was born. The CARE-A-Thon is an outdoor event that can be completed individually or in small groups or teams. Participants can register to complete either a marathon or half-marathon and have 26 days to complete their challenge. The idea is to get outside, have some fun and get fit, all while raising money for a good cause. The hope is that this event will transform into a family-friendly outdoor event each spring that will bring Tillamook County together to fight poverty in our community! CARE does hope that some limited, in-person events will be available during their inaugural CARE-A-Thon this spring. On Saturday, May 1 at 10:00 am, CARE’s new Executive Director Peter Starkey invites you to join him to Run the First Mile with CARE. This event will take place starting at the Nehalem Bay House and will livestreamed as well for those who want to follow along remotely. Then, on Thursday, May 27 at 8:00 pm, Peter invites you to Run the Final Mile with CARE. This event will take place starting at the CARE offices, and will go out to Godspeed Park and back, affording runners a view of CARE’s micro shelter village along the way. This event will also be available via livestream. “It is regrettable that we must move away from the much beloved Bowl-A-Thon,” says Peter. “But as with so many things this past year, we have been forced to adapt to changing conditions and explore new ways of doing things.
