County reports 15 new positive COVID-19 cases T

he Tillamook County Health Department reports 15 new confirmed positive cases of COVID-19 this week. The health department is monitoring 22 cases. “Tillamook County is likely to remain in the Lower Risk, even with that increased 15 new cases this week,” Administrator Marlene Putman said. “The next movement period is March 12 through March 25, with the Oregon Health Authority data showing 21 cases from the past two weeks.” Final data count and risk level status will be announced Tuesday, March 9, and go into effect Friday, March 12.
Putman said people should continue to wear face masks, watch physical distance and wash hands. “If you’re ill, it’s important to stay home, unless you’re seeking medical care,” Putman said. “COVID-19 testing is still available.” To make a COVID-19 testing appointment, call the COVID-19 line at 503-842-3900. Adventist Health Tillamook President Eric Swanson said 140 people across Oregon are hospitalized with COVID-19. In Region 1 – which includes Tillamook, Clatsop, Clackamas, Columbia, Multnomah and Washington counties –74 adult ICU beds are available. To date, 59 percent of the hospital’s staff has been vaccinated. “For our total staff – this also

includes the medical staff – we’re up to 59 percent have been vaccinated,” Swanson said. “Medical staff, they still lead with 83 percent of staff who have received their vaccines.” Emergency Coordinator Ed Colson said 572 Moderna vaccines have been administered in Tillamook County this week. For primary doses, 4,380 doses have been administered since December, with 2,154 Phase 1B primary doses and 1,527 Phase 1A booster doses administered, to date. “There was a new sequencing plan recently pushed out by the governor’s office and OHA,” Colson said. “That new sequencing plan can be seen on the website.” Regarding the new sequencing for COVID-19 vaccines, the health
department is not scheduling any of the groups yet, Colson said. Phase 1B, Group 6, is eligible March 29 and includes seafood, agricultural, migrant farm and food processing workers; people living in lowincome senior housing; senior group and independent living; individuals experiencing homelessness; people displaced currently by wildfires; and wildland firefighter. The health department is continuing to work through Groups 2-5 of Phase 1B, which includes those people 65 and older. When registration is ready for those new groups, the health department will let the public know. “Once you’re registered, that gets on a list that’s shared with vaccine providers,” Colson said. “When

they do call, the heath department or vaccine partner will call three times and may leave a message identifying themselves on the call. If no call [back] is made after three times, that name goes back on the computer.” Colson said the health department encourages all who are eligible for a vaccine to fill out the eligibility form. illamook County Health Department provided a COVID-19 vaccine update during a Tillamook County Board of Commissioners meeting Wednesday, March 3. Administrator Marlene Putman said Tillamook County is likely to remain in Lower Risk for an additional two weeks if cases remain below 30 for the two-week period. The final data count will be announced Tuesday, March 9, and go in effect Friday, March 12. “The governor announced a new sequencing plan,” Putman said. “We provide that on our Facebook.” Gov. Kate Brown announced Feb. 26 a new sequencing plan for the COVID-19 vaccine. Phase 1B, Group 6 will be eligible March 29 and includes adults 45-64 with underlying health conditions with increased risk; seafood,

New book by local author focuses on history of north Tillamook County L

ocal author Mark Beach has his new book “Images of America: Manzanita, Nehalem, and Wheeler,” available in local bookstores and gift shops later this month. The book is part of the “Images of America” series and is published by Arcadia Publishing. The “Images of America” series specializes in small towns around the country, including “Manchester,” “March of Dimes,” “Bridges of the Oregon Coast,” and more. Beach is a professional historian and longtime volunteer in the community, and has been active in the library, carbon recycling and more. He has collected historical photographs for the Nehalem Valley Historical Society since 1992. “My wife and I moved here in 1992 from Portland,” Beach said. “Way before that, I had been a professor of history at universities in the east.” After collecting photos and scanning them for the historical society, Beach started teaching a class. He taught his first class 15 years ago. Locals have enjoyed his presentations and exhibits about local history. “I’ve written several books about graphic arts and design,” Beach said. “I’ve not written a book about history yet.” “Images of America: Manzanita,
Nehalem, and Wheeler” is about the three villages of Manzanita, Nehalem and Wheeler that function as one community in the Nehalem Bay. All three towns share many essential services but have different personalities. The Nehalem Bay area includes Oswald West State Park, Nehalem Bay State Park, Neahkahnie Mountain and a large bay where the Nehalem River enters the ocean. The towns of Manzanita, Nehalem and Wheeler are linked in a lot of ways, Beach said. They are like three siblings with three different personalities. Being Beach’s home community, he said he likes to keep up with the history of the area.
“I try to highlight a lot of things that people are thinking about,” Beach said of the book, naming the old city hall in Manzanita. Another highlight in the book is the old Rinehart hospital in Wheeler, which conversation has turned to what will happen to the building when it is torn down or changed, especially with the food bank being located in the building. The broader community will be talking about funding the food bank. “I wanted in the book to background for these kind of discussions,” Beach said. “They’re civic discussions and every
community has forward plans to make.” Beach said there is a chapter in the book about Nehalem Bay State Park and Oswald West State Park. This chapter includes the history of how the state got those parks. The book is available at Cloud & Leaf Bookstore, T-Spot, Manzanita News & Espresso, Wild Coast Goods and Pelican & Piper. The Nehalem Valley Historical Society has worked diligently to get the book in Manzanita, Wheeler and Nehalem. All profits from the book go to the society. Nehalem Valley Historical Society President Tom Campbell said the historical society is working on a project to digitize their collections in the archive. They have been in contact with vendors and have taken bids. The society is located in the basement of Pine Grove Community House, which happens to be in a tsunami zone. “We feel that it is imperative to get our collections into an electronic format and get them removed to climate controlled storage outside of the tsunami zone,” Campbell said. “We also believe that making our collections available online will enhance our public access and allow visitors and volunteers to coordinate better so that visitors can come and see what they really want to see. The digitization process will be expensive. We are looking for grant opportunities but the royalties from the book will supplement our coffers.” Beach said it was a pleasure to write the book. Gov. orders students back to schools A

lmost a year after schools sent students home for the COVID-19 pandemic, Oregon Governor Kate Brown issued an executive order Friday aimed at bringing them back. Brown’s order directs the Oregon Department of Education and Oregon Health Authority to establish guidance and regulations which bring kindergarten through fifth graders back to campuses across the state by March 29, and sixth through twelfth graders back by April 19. “The science is very, very clear: with proper safety measures in place, there is a low risk of COVID-19 transmission in school.” Brown wrote in a press release announcing the move. “Oregon parents can be confident about sending their children back to a classroom learning environment.” School reopenings will still be guided by a slew of state requirements around health and safety measures, as well as the advisory metrics tied to the level of virus spread in each community. Comprehensive distance learning will only be an option for school districts when individual students require the accommodation, or when “community transmission rates warrant transition to CDL,” according to the governor’s office. The move is the most recent in a string of changes in how the state reopens its schools to in-person learning. Since Brown directed state agencies in December to prioritize school reopenings, and granted school districts more control over the process, around 55,000 have returned to classrooms, according to the governor. ODE reports that just under 700 schools across the state are operating in on-site or hybrid learning models. All but six counties (including Curry, Coos, Douglas, Klamath and Jefferson) already meet those OHA advisory metrics for returning to in-person, hybrid instruction for all grade levels, and all but Curry County meet the advisory metrics for returning to in-person, hybrid instruction of elementary grade levels, according to ODE. nnette “Nettie” Marie Casiano Fasciana was a loving mother, wife, sister, daughter, and an unforgettable friend. She passed away on Monday, February 15, 2021, in Southern California, surrounded by her dear friends and family. Nettie was diagnosed with a rare form of bile duct cancer in May 2020, and fought with every ounce of her strong and stubborn self until the very end. She called Pacific City her home for 25 years, but made the decision to carry out her last days with the love and support of her
family and dear friends, in Orange County, California Nettie was born in San Francisco, California to Madeline and Nicholas Grumbine on September 7, 1967. She was the second child of six children grown up in a strong catholic family. Nick and Madeline raised their children in Southern California in a house with a large garden, fruit trees, chickens, and geese where Nettie wasn’t afraid to get dirty and was a loving and responsible mentor to her four younger siblings. They fished, camped, created mischief, and often vacationed to their family cabin in the Southern California mountains. After graduating highschool, she went on to meet her first husband, Luis Casiano Jr., and then attended UC Irvine for nursing school while pregnant with her first son. She worked as an LPN and helped raise two boys,
Tyler and Luis, in Fresno, California. After deciding to move to the Oregon Coast in 1995 for a better life for her boys, Luis and Nettie moved to Pacific City. They divorced in 2000, Luis passed away in 2004, and Nettie became a devoted and hard working single mother who would do anything for her sons. Nettie was a respected and beloved person along the Oregon Coast. She was a bartender and manager for the Sportsman’s Pub for over a decade, where she fed and cared for a number of close friends and customers throughout the county and beyond. She served on the Nestucca Rural Fire Protection District Board of Directors, as the Secretary Treasurer. She took tremendous pride as the Administrator for the Kiwanda Community Center for a number of years where she helped create fundraisers, community events, and helped facilitate the first annual Pacific City

harles ‘Chuck’ Willison passed away March 3rd, 2021 at his home in Bay City Oregon. He was born to George and Hazel Willison in Omaha, Nebraska on March 12th, 1936. As a young, man Chuck served his country during the Korean War in the South Pacific on the USS Yorktown. After his time in the Navy, he worked in his family’s Sheet Metal and Heating & Refrigeration business (of three generations) which he later came to own. He muscled through his illnesses until God decided he had fought hard enough and took him to his forever home in Heaven. He was my fierce protector, partner in crime and would do anything to make you laugh. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, loved to take cruises, loved his fast cars and even faster speed boats amongst many other things. I have never seen anyone enjoy taking his kids water skiing as much as he did when I was a kid. The weekend would hit and he would say “Load up in the motorhome kids and let’s hit the road, we are heading to Lake Havasu!” Snacks a plenty for all! He always made sure we were making memories to last a lifetime. He was the hardest working man I have ever known in my life. He took pride in providing for his 7 kids and his beautiful wife. Mom and Dad had a love that was very rare and pure. They were always hugging and kissing on each
other, not to mention teasing the heck out of one another! They were a sight to be seen! Daddy’s laugh was so contagious. You couldn’t help but join in especially if he was doing his belly laugh. He was a trickster through and through which made life fun and a whole lot of crazy! He got the biggest kick out of scaring my Mom (well, anyone really). He was such a stinker! He was the best

ohn L. Sander passed away at Hazel Hawkins Hospital at the age of 70. John L. was born in Tillamook, Oregon, and went to Sacred Heart Grade School, Mt. Angel Seminary, Tillamook Catholic High School, Southern Oregon University, and San Francisco College of Mortuary Science. He received a bachelor’s of business administration in 1985 and worked at Waud’s Funeral Home in Tillamook, OR, Reilly Company, Goodwin and Scannell in San Francisco, Conger Morris Funeral Directors in
Medford, OR, and owned and operated Black Cooper Sander Funeral Home in Hollister since 1979. He married the former Donna Baertlein in 1975 at Sacred Heart Church in Tillamook, OR. They lived in Medford, OR from 1975 to 1979. John was a member of Sacred Heart Church/ St. Benedict Church in Hollister, Hollister Elks Lodge, Knights of Columbus, San Benito County Militia, The Woolgrowers’ Club, Hollister Boosters, and was president/ secretary. He served on the San Benito Hospital District Board of Directors from 1983 to 1996 and also was on the hospital foundation for 6 years. He was especially proud of being a member of the University of Oregon Alumni Association (honorary member) and the Duck Athletic Fund and The Oregon Club of Northern California. He was also involved with the Friends of the Cape Meares Lighthouse and took a particular interest in all the lighthouses up and down the Washington, Oregon, and California
Oktoberfest. Her talents never ceased to amaze the ones closest to her in life. Nettie loved the outdoors and everything that Mother Nature offered. She enjoyed fishing, horseback riding, golfing, camping, and having as much fun as she possibly could. She especially loved the time spent with her beloved wife, Pandora Fasciana, where they kayaked and adventured to as many national parks as they could. She was the life of the party and always the last one to go. Nettie was 53 years old when she passed but don’t you dare call her ma’am. She is survived by her wife, Pandora, sons Tyler and Luis, brothers Joe and Jonathan, sisters Regina, Christiane, and Amy. Due to the difficulties of inperson gatherings an informal and virtual celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Interment will be on Friday, March 12, 2021 at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Tillamook, Oregon. The Reverend Jerry Ray Jefferies May 4, 1947 – Feb. 3, 2021
W
hile mourning the tragic automobile accident that claimed the life of Jerry Jefferies, we celebrate his life with joy and gratitude. The incredible uniqueness of this man was so deeply felt by many throughout the world. They were touched by his love, whether they knew him for 10 minutes, 30 years or a lifetime. He was a gentleman who did ordinary things with extraordinary love. Born in Portland, Oregon, the eldest child of George Henry Jefferies and Pearl Marie Halvorson. Jerry’s three siblings survive him – Jeanne Tongret (Leon), Suzy (Ed), and Peter (Colleen). In their words – ‘they felt protected by him; he listened without judgment, encouraged and challenged them; was content to sit in silence in nature and just be quiet except for the sound of the wind and animals; he was fun and found humor and wit in ordinary moments and love in their individuality.’ Jerry’s children, born to him and gained in marriage, were a source of his joy and drive to keep learning and inspiring deeper thoughts. Marriage to Peggy Shallhorn in 1974 saw them raise daughters Christiania Marie and Sarah Elizabeth in Hazard Nebraska, Kearney Nebraska and Hillsboro, Oregon. Grandsons Greenley (9) and Greyson (3) brought him many smiles – Greenley learning his biking skills and Greyson smiling constantly as he sang with great confidence – just like Grandpa. On 10-10-2020 Jerry married his soulmate, Margaret Hawkins Deveraux, in their garden at home. Zoom brought guests from around the world although only 22 in the yard because of Covid rules. Along with his wife, Jerry gained 6 more children, (Dan, Bo, Laurie, Kim, Tomi and Ted and their spouses), 25 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren. All loved to be with him. With violin or guitar in hand, there were many family song nights as Jerry and Margaret were able to travel and visit with their children over the past few years. After graduating from Portland State University
in 1969 with a Mathematics degree, Jerry entered the Navy and was commissioned Ensign in 1970. He attended flight school and trained as a paratrooper. After the Navy, his early careers included engineering with Bonneville Power Administration, working with homeless youth through Agape House Community Center in Portland, and youth director at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lewiston ID. In 1975 he enrolled in Luther Seminary, St Paul Minnesota. Jerry interned as a hospital Chaplain in Amarillo, Texas and was ordained in 1979. Of great importance to him were his first Call to Faith Lutheran Church in Hazard Nebraska and then as a mission church developer of Family of Christ Church in Kearney, Nebraska. In 1988 after a move back to their roots in Oregon, Jerry excelled in operating his own carpentry, remodel and construction company. His notable craftsmanship included restoring and installing a beautiful antique pipe organ at St Peter. Then the community took pride in his engineering and rebuilding, with help from others, the bell tower and steeple of St Peter ELCA Church in Tillamook. Fitness was always important to him. He took up cycling, loving riding thousands of miles on country roads and completing 7 Cycle Oregon week-long rides after he turned 50. He assisted ministering to local church groups on the Oregon coast. From 1996 through 2017 Jerry pastored the congregation of St Peter Lutheran, Tillamook, until his retirement. While fostering small town relationships, in November of 2010 with God’s intervention, Jerry became the full-time pastor of three congregations in Tillamook - St Peter Lutheran, St Albans Episcopal and Tillamook United Methodist Church. In his words ‘My faith life was enriched beyond my imagination.’ After retirement, Jerry was privileged to supply as priest for St Catherine of Al-
exandria Episcopal church in Manzanita. Jerry often expounded Steven Covey’s phrase ‘We are not human beings on a spiritual journey, we are spiritual beings on a human journey’. He taught God would have us live our humanity in fulfillment of God’s promise of Kingdom in spite of all the challenges we may discover along the way. His generosity to his communities included many hours raising funds and advocating for Food Roots programs, along with his engineering and carpentry skills with United Paws of Tillamook to restore a service building for rescue cats and kittens. In recent words of those who collectively mourn him in many countries and comfort one another – he was a godly man of love, caring, compassion, encouragement, fun and humor, family, simplicity, honor, true to his word, energetic can-do attitude, enthusiasm, helpful, sweetest – kindest person and a smile that radiated to all ages. Challenged by personal cancer in 2010, others then added mentor, supportive and compassionate. Notes of his words kept for years included “Lord turn off our minds and turn on our hearts and souls – Faith.” Others said, he taught us about the God who loved us with humor and grace and always a guitar in hand. He loved all people from children to the elderly and was never too busy if you needed to talk. His dreams – as told to Christiania – Your life is never going to come out where you think it is. You have to pursue what you think is best today but where you end up will be a whole lot better than you ever imagined. He closed many worship services with: ‘May the extravagant love of God consume you, may the Redeemers life and passion inspire you, and may the Spirit empower you to do ordinary things with extraordinary love.’ Jerry was predeceased by his parents and chosen daughter, Tomi Alys Deveraux. public meeting was held Feb. 25 to discuss the appeal of a land-use decision restricting private property usage to “lowimpact recreational” on Bayocean Spit. No decisions were made at that meeting; it was simply an opportunity to gather additional information from the property owner and the public. Cape Meares residents John Harland, Chris Spence and Scott Gordon
spoke in favor of upholding the Tillamook County Planning Commission’s original decision and protecting the spit from development, as did Cameron La Follette, the Executive Director of the Oregon Coast Alliance. groundbreaking ceremony was blessed with good weather and a great turn out in Hebo last Saturday. The crowd included a trio of local dignitariesState representatives David Gomberg and Suzanne Weber, along with State Senator Dick Anderson. They each took a turn with the microphone to address attendees. The event kicks off construction on a two story, four bedroom home being built with volunteer labor and donated dollars for the family of Andrea Lyman and Loto Kelekolio and their three children, currently of Tillamook. Pastor Lonnie Moeller, of Hebo Christian Center (across Highway 101 from the lot) blessed the build with prayer. Afterward, family members were photographed with shovels in various sizes, digging into the soil where the new house will stand. There were jubilant smiles and considerable applause. It was fun to be part of the happy celebration which included a bonfire. It’s good to see that the fundraising started by Bob Boyer of Beaver, more than a decade ago, has finally grown into a Habitat for Humanity home build. Remember that local activists’ Racial and Social Equity Tillamook (RSET) is sponsoring a COVID19 Public Memorial Event. It’s planned for “all day” on Saturday at Sue Elmore Park (near U.S. Highway 101 and Front street in Tillamook). The event’s intended to give public acknowledgment of the challenges and suffering that Covid19 has caused our community. A memorial field of white flags will symbolize the lives lost in Oregon over the past year. Visitors can walk through the flags and write thoughts, names, or memorials on them to share their loss with the community. All are welcome. There are still openings in an upcoming parenting series. As a friend from Rockaway put it, “a very strange-looking fish with the fin on the top, kind of like a beanie hat with a propeller.” Well, it turns out it was an ocean sunfish (Mola mola). Ocean sunfish are native to tropical and temperate waters around the world. These fish look like half a fish—a fish head with a tail—and their bodies are flattened laterally. Mature ocean sunfish have an average length of almost six feet and can reach up to a ton in weight. They are uncommon visitors to our coastline here, but we have seen them swimming in the ocean when fishing from our son-in-law’s dory out of Pacific City. We also once saw seven dead baby ocean sunfish strewn along Bayocean Spit after a strong winter storm. Now we hear that a

Bags for survival suits, a float coat, crab bait and cargo boxes, Styrofoam floats, coils of rope, and other gear have washed ashore, as well as the severely damaged wheelhouse. One full bucket of hydraulic fluid was on the beach; we called the Parks Dept. to report that as hazardous waste. Our hearts go out to the families and friends of the two crewmen who lost their lives as a result of that tragic accident. stranded loggerhead sea turtle was found recently on Rockaway beach. Personnel from the Seaside Aquarium rescued it and transferred it to the Oregon Coast Aquarium for rehabilitation. Keep your eyes peeled, locals; you might stumble across one here! And it might be a big fella; loggerhead turtles can weigh up to 300 pounds. A number of Cape Meares residents are awaiting their second COVID vaccination shot as we enter March, and others are lined up for their first. Good to see our community making progress! She got busy planting bulbs and joked that she would never see the beautiful blooms there, but someday all would enjoy this burst of color from the bulbs. What a wonderful memory and I am so happy I have the opportunity to share my memories of years gone by with you. I had a little accident last week while making cream of asparagus soup in my instant pot. After pressure- cooking it for the proper amount of time and letting it rest, it was still not creamy. The recipe mentioned that I may need an ‘Immersion Blender’ but if I don’t have one, just pour the soup into a blender and cream it a bit. So, that’s what I did. When I plugged in the blender, I had accidentally left it on high, so it blasted the soup all over my kitchen, cupboards, stove, floor but worst of all it got all over me. I had bubbling burns on both arms and soup all over my clothes. What little soup was left, Dale loved, but I wouldn’t even taste it. Even the smell of asparagus now nauseates me. Unfortunately, we bought close to eight pounds of it at Fred Meyers, so I will be pulling it out of the freezer and making more soup in the future. Maybe someday I won’t mind the smell anymore. Good news! The Manhattan Beach State Park is open again and the roof on the restrooms has been fixed. There is lots of parking, and a restroom. This sweet little gem is just North of Rockaway Beach. A fine member of our community has just officially retired from the Rockaway Beach Volunteer Fire Department on March 1st. A good friend of ours served our community for 25 years, and though he has retired, he is still serving our town in other ways. Tom Martine was a Captain for 20 years and a medical officer for 18 years. During this time Tom was also a member of the Tillamook County Fire Investigation Team. I hope

Mindset in a time of adversity I

n this little town you will find hard working men and women. One can easily see that there is a fighting spirit here. Blue collar families have built this place we call home. This home holds many people with calloused hands from logging to farming, its our towns backbone. Grit is in our DNA and giving up does not appear to be an option. We are all facing worldly challenges that make 2008 look like a vacation. From political battles and a pandemic, to landslides and burnt trees. Not forgetting flooding and storms that have tested everyones’ roofs and foundations. There is no person left unaffected by these events. We face a time of change and challenge. When these issues arise what is your go to coping method? Binge eat, shop, escapism? Or a power through heads on approach? Turning to family or prayer? I personally have dabbled in all of these options. Some being clearly better than others. Doing the same thing over and over again, expecting a different outcome is the definition of insanity. But what if we did the same thing
with a different mindset. Would our outcome be any different or how we handle challenges? Having a growth mindset will affect the outcome. Carol Dweck wrote a best seller on this topic. To sum the book up, people face struggles. How they behave shows their mindset and the effect on the outcome of their goals. How many times have you doubted yourself? Saying things like “It will never change” or “I just can’t.” These things have ran through my mind more than I care to remember. When we choose to correct our mindset, we are allowing for a new possible outcome. A growth mindset requires embracing challenges and
endurance when faced with setbacks. Understand that effort is vital to success. Take feedback and failure as an opportunity for growth. Learn from others success and find inspiration in their achievements. Know that everyone is on their own path and not in a competition. Allow yourself to be open to new things, especial when working on goals. When working on goals have the big picture in mind but break the dream down to smaller obtainable goals so you can experience the joy. When old habits arise change how you speak to yourself. I can’t, to I will try another way. This is good enough, to I will do my best. This is too hard, to this will take some time and effort. I give up, to I won’t give up. Forgive yourself when faced with setbacks. Reflect on why there was failure and learn from the mistake. Practice mindfulness and gratitude when there is an urge to engage in past unhealthy behavior. Instead of shopping go through what you have. Alternative to binge eating invest your time in a relaxing activity. I still struggle with these coping strategies but I know they work and I am still learning. I hope you are too.

he State of Oregon has a big job before us. We must administer Covid-19 vaccines to as many of our 4.2 million residents as possible, as quickly as possible. Because the currently approved vaccines require two doses for patients to achieve maximum immunity, our healthcare infrastructure must find a way to give about 8 million shots in short order. As the owner of several independent local pharmacies, I’m proud that my facilities will be part of the solution. Locations in Tillamook, Gold Beach, and Salem have received Covid-19 vaccine supplies and we are working to organize more, as well setting up deliveries for other sites. Although the number of doses will trickle in week by week, we will do everything in our power to accelerate patient scheduling so these products have a positive impact on the community right away. It was a wise choice by

and locations. At the Tillamook Main Library, we are open for you from 9 AM – 5 PM, Monday through Friday. We are also adding Saturday hours! You can visit the library from 10 AM – 3 PM every Saturday. The branch libraries in Rockaway, Garibaldi, and Bay City will be open for visits Monday through Friday from 12 noon – 5 PM. The Manzanita and Pacific City locations will have those same hours but will also be open on Saturdays from 10 AM – 3 PM. We hope to add more hours as the situation continues to improve. Our number one goal in opening (besides getting books into your hands) is to keep staff and the public safe. It might be prudent to point out a few of the
“safety first” rules we have in place so you can plan your library visit accordingly. Obviously, masks are required for entry into any of our libraries. That necessity is a public safety standard now so we must follow those guidelines. Your visit will be limited to 15 minutes so you can browse and select your own materials. But don’t worry, we aren’t going to hang a timer around your neck. We just will not have furniture set up yet for you to lounge on as many people used to love to do. Eventually, the chairs will come back out. And if you have a medical condition that would require you to sit, just ask a staff member for assistance. One other note…we will not have bathrooms available for the public right now. Because we cannot meet the strict cleaning requirements for public restrooms, we will keep our bathrooms locked at this time. Perhaps the most important thing to remember is if you are NOT ready to come back into the libraries, we can still offer you curbside service. The choice is yours. Inside…or curbside…YOU decide!

Every Covid-19 vaccine shot that is given helps reduce community transmission of this dangerous disease and takes Oregon a step closer to herd immunity. The faster we accomplish the task, the more lives we save overall. Independent local pharmacies offer another advantage—our ability to reach vulnerable populations. In many cases, our pharmacists and staff have close relationships with elderly, low-income, and underserved individuals in our neighborhoods. We can update them about vaccinations and personally educate and encourage them to get their shots. What’s more, establishing a large number of vaccination sites brings inoculations closer to people who might otherwise struggle to come to us, due to frailty, lack of transportation access, or other issues. This is an important factor if we want to maximize
vaccination rates. For all of this to happen seamlessly, vaccination sites across Oregon and the U.S. are relying on our healthcare distributors. These are the companies that link the vaccine manufacturers producing millions of doses with the pharmacies, clinics, and other administration locations where residents roll up a sleeve to be inoculated. Fortunately, we have excellent partners. Throughout my career operating local pharmacies, I’ve been able to count on healthcare distributors to keep my shelves stocked with the right complement of medicines and medical supplies. It’s quite a task. At any time, local patients require thousands of different products to treat everything from a minor sinus infection to serious lung disease. Pharmacies like mine must be prepared to dispense these therapies as soon as we receive the prescription, so the patient can start or stay on their treatment regimen, without delay or interruption. Excellent collaboration with and consistent deliveries from healthcare distributors make pharmacists’ jobs possible every day. And now the same service is facilitating our participation in the vital national Covid-19 vaccination effort. I’m confident that by turning to proven networks of pharmacies and healthcare distributors, America has made the right decision for getting vaccinations to the people and ending the Covid-19 pandemic.
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Thank you for perspectives on the forest industry I want to thank you for your edition on February 11, 2021 which had several articles on our relationship with the forests of Oregon. I am deeply grateful for the letter from Ellie Hilger about her family and husband’s work. On the same page was an article from the North Coast Communities for Watershed Protection and their great work. There was also an article on new laws for forest herbicides and our Senator’s legislation on River protection ~ beautiful work to move us forward here in Oregon. Having these multiple perspectives shared is so im-
portant when we live in such a complex world. For added thoughts on approaching forests from many perspectives we can look to a project in Canada called The Slocan Integral Forestry Cooperative. Stephen Martineau moved in 1992 to the Slocan Valley in British Columbia and asked the question: Would it be possible for the union, the logging company, recreation enthusiasts, First Nations, environmental organizations, and the residents to come together under one vision? reetings Bay City and Halleluah! The library has important news to share with us; as of March 8th, the Tillamook County Libraries are opening to inside service. We can browse for our books and use the public computers and copy machines. They will continue curbside as needed, but there are still some restrictions; visits are limited to 15 minutes, and 30 minutes for computer sessions. Branch hours of operation may vary. Bay City Branch is open Mon.Fri., noon to 5 p.m.. Please note: In all Tillamook County Library branches, masks are still required! is hard at work creating new musical events for us to enjoy. They have not released any more information to the public on upcoming events, but they will put them on the BCAC website when Covid-19 restrictions change. Leeauna Perry informs me that the BCAC has not yet reopened for in-person activities, but they have been conducting some exciting remote and virtual programs. Currently they are providing art education to students ages K6th grade in Tillamook School District. They also provide art education to South Prairie Elementary (grades 2-3), who are on a hybrid learning schedule. Students are taught a variety of art skills and techniques while working on projects that are designed to support core curriculum
areas of social studies, math, science, health, writing and reading. Currently they are working on a collaborative project between the BCAC and South Prairie Counselor, Dana Reynolds. Mrs. Reynolds provides students with an educational video where she reads the book “All the Colors We Are” and discusses how we get our unique skin colors. Leeauna and Mrs. Reynolds couple this with a guided art lesson that starts by students blending their own skin tone color using oil pastels, and culminates with self-portraits. Leeauna says that she is “blown away by how incredibly talented these students are”. I am impressed with the many creative ways Leeauna and Dana teach. That is truly amazing. Dan is a professional storyteller who moved to Bay City four years ago from Colorado. Dan has a degree in forestry and worked as a park ranger. He had visited the area while on vacation and wanted to live here upon retiring. For him it was an easy transition from talking to people as a park ranger to storytelling. He honed his skills by taking classes from the Storyteller Guild. His stories cover a wide range – folklore, historical, native American and more. His theme for March is “Irish”, and in April it is “Tall Tales”. You won’t want to miss them. Dan is also available for private parties, clubs, and organizations, and can be reached at tillamookstoryteller.com. There is no better time to become a member of BCAC than right now. Collectively, the leadership is the most creative and high energy that has come together in Bay City you are aware how lucky our community is to have volunteers such as Tom Martine. In a small town the fire department is involved in so much more than a big city department. His first summer volunteering, the department saved 35 people that were pulled out to the ocean (times that by 25 years). They also respond to boating accidents in both Tillamook and Nehalem jetties. Through the years they have responded to wildland fires, motor vehicle accidents and ambulance calls, structure fires, searching for lost children and assisting elderly folks that have fallen.. Tom has performed CPR over 200 times. Think about that. Folks like Tom are priceless. Volunteers in our community are truly the unsung heroes, and without them, our community would be so much

It was a day adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2013 to commemorate the adoption of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wildlife Fauna and Flora (CITES) on March 3rd, 1973. This year’s theme of “Forests and Livelihoods: Sustaining People and Planet” speaks directly to us here in Tillamook County where people, fish and wildlife all depend on sustainable forests. Meetings this week: The Bay City Council meets the second Tuesday of every month at 6:00 PM at City Hall. Mark your calendar now. A joint meeting of the Bay City Planning and Parks Committees, Public Works, and the City Council is being held on March 4th to draft action on the update of Bay City’s codes and ordnances. The draft will be presented to the City Council for their consideration. A study to assist the City with the update was funded by a grant from less. Thank you Tom for giving your time to help our town be the best it can be. You are awesome! I am giving you plenty of warning on this momentous date coming up. Pat Croman Scott is turning 100 on March 17th. If you know Pat, even if you don’t, send a birthday greeting her way. What a wonderful occasion! Doug Olson ended the Chamber letter with their “ironclad guarantee that you will know more about where you live and work at 1:15 p.m. than you did at noon”; a meeting that is both informative and entertaining. Linda Bagwell, leaves us with something to ponder…. This week’s thought is; ‘What is the wrack line?’ Okay, Linda, you got me on this one. I have never heard this term before. So, me, being the sleuth I am, checked it out on my duckduckgo search engine. The answer is that it is the line of organic debris left on the beach by high tide. Sometimes this line is super cool, sometimes totally smelly and gross, i.e. those nasty little blue sailor jacks. But it is the place to look for all those glass floats! The Tillamook Cheesemakers kicked off their shortened football season with a loss to the Milwaukie Mustang by a narrow 13-14 final score, but the Mooks came out fast and hard in the first quarter and it looked like it would be a Tillamook blowout. Tillamook did not know what to expect out of the Mustangs as they are playing down from 5A this season and came to Tillamook with good numbers, but only a few wins in the last few years. Unfortunately, sloppy play, penalties and turnovers plagued the Mooks after the opening two drives where the Cheesemakers easily marched down the field and scored. Tillamook kicked off to the Mustangs to open the game. The Mook defense held the Mustangs to a 3 and out and got the ball in the offenses’s hands quickly. Tillamook’s
Muguel Niemi scored first for the Mooks and the extra point was good to give Tillamook a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter. The Mooks kicked off again to the Mustangs after the quick score and the defense came up huge again causing another three and out by the Mustang offense. Tillamook took over on their own 37 yard line after a Mustang punt. A quick pass from Mook quarterback Trent Buchler to Marshall Allen and it set up a 6 yard touchdown run by Neimi for his second score of the game. The missed extra point left the Mooks up 13-0 and it seemed the game was going Tillamook’s way. That would be the final Tillamook scoring of the afternoon as penalties and turnovers gave the Mustangs opportunity after opportunity to bring the game back. With the momentum shifting a little as the first quarter wound down the Cheesemakers lead was still 13-0. With a couple of minutes
off the clock in the second quarter, Milwaukie quarter back Kaden Harris connected on a 35 yard pass play in the end zone for the first Mustang score of the day. The Mooks defense held the Mustangs to only 105 yards of offense in the first half. The second half mistakes proved to be too much for the Mooks. The Neah-Kah-Nie Pirates and Nestucca Bobcats took to the field Friday, March 5, with 9-9 in a non-league game at Neah-Kah-Nie. The Bobcats won the game by a score of 38-6. Neah-Kah-Nie’s (NKN) first possession, after the opening kickoff, ended around mid-field. Nestucca capitalized and blocked a punt, turning it into six points. Nestucca looked like they would be dominating the game, with Jaysson Swirtz and Tyler Hagerty scoring
touchdowns to go up 22-0. The Pirates refused to back down and handed the ball to Parker Hopkins for three big first down runs, culminating in a touchdown, making the score 22-6. The Bobcats answered with quarterback Skyler Wallace throwing a touchdown pass, making the score 30-6 going into the half. The Bobcats received the second half kickoff but NKN attempted to fake them out with an on-side kick. The kick was fielded by Bobcat linebacker Dylan Prock and the Bobcats started their drive. Phase 1B, Group 8 is eligible May 1 and includes frontline workers as defined by Centers for Disease Control, multigenerational household members, and adults 16-44 with underlying health conditions with increased risk. Phase 2 is eligible June 1 and includes the general population with adults 45-64 and then those 16 and older by July 1. Right now, Tillamook County is still working on Phase 1B groups 1-5, Putman said. Those who fill out an eligibility form are put on a randomized list. The county is currently vaccinating those 70 and older and will be starting on those 65 and older soon. So far, 2,160 Phase 1 primary doses and 1,648 Phase 1B doses have been administered in the county. To date, 14.4 percent of Tillamook County residents have been vaccinated. Putman said the Johnson & Johnson vaccine would be shipping out to counties in Oregon, including Tillamook County. It is likely there will be a future booster dose. For those who have received both doses of the vaccine, they may be covered but can still be a carrier and infect those around them, Putman said. Y
ou might have heard this term before and wondered what it meant. Insulin resistance can lead to diabetes, and it is associated with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and obesity. If you have any of these conditions you might have insulin resistance. So, what is Insulin Resistance? Insulin is like the key that unlocks the door so that blood sugar can move from our blood stream into our body’s cells. This keeps our blood sugar from getting too high, resulting in diabetes. But, what if we have insulin, but it doesn’t work? It’s like something has gummed up the lock and the key can’t open the door to let the blood sugar move out of our blood stream. This is insulin resistance. We have insulin but something is resisting it and stopping it from working. This is what happens in the early stages of type 2 diabetes, or prediabetes. Insulin resistance can be present for years before someone devel-
ops diabetes. When insulin isn’t working well enough, our pancreas tries to make more insulin to get the job done. But, over time, our pancreas starts to wear out and can’t make enough insulin and our blood sugar goes up and we have type 2 diabetes. Is there something we can do to help our insulin work better and prevent the pancreas from wearing out? YES! Number 1 – Physical Activity - 30 minutes a day of moderate activity can reduce insulin resistance. This can be a brisk walk or bike ride, heavy housework like washing windows, vacuuming, mopping, yardwork like mowing the lawn or raking. You don’t have to do all 30 minutes at once. It can be spread out through the day. Number 2 – Eat more Fiber and Less Fat – High fiber foods like vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans, lentils and nuts can lower insulin resistance. High fat foods make insulin resistance worse, so aim for lean meat and fish and smaller portions of meat and dairy. The Mediterranean Diet is a good place to start. Number 3 – Weight Loss
Indian Vegetable and Rice Skillet Meal Number of servings: 8 cups Time for preparation (including preparation & cooking): 40 minutes Ingredients - 2 teaspoons vegetable oil - 1 onion, chopped - 1 teaspoon ginger, fresh or 1/2 teaspoon ground - 1⁄2 teaspoon turmeric - 1⁄2 teaspoon ground cumin - 2 cups mixed vegetables, chopped (try cauliflower, peppers, carrots or peas) - 1 large baking potato, peeled and diced - 1 cup white rice, uncooked - 1⁄2 teaspoon salt (optional) - 2 1⁄2 cups water - 1 can (15.5 ounces) kidney beans, drained and rinsed Directions

1. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat (300 degrees in an electric skillet). 2. Add onion, ginger, turmeric, and cumin, and stir while cooking for 1 minute. 3. Add remaining ingredients. Bring to a boil, cover, and reduce heat. 4. Simmer 20-25 minutes. Serve hot. 5. Refrigerate leftovers within 2 hours. Notes • For a flavor boost, cook ½ cup raisins or diced apples with the vegetables. • Try using brown rice instead of white, and increase the simmering time to 45 minutes. • Cook your own dry beans.
