Dr. Paul Jarrell

New TBCC president discusses past, programs, plans

T

illamook Bay Community College welcomed Dr. Paul Jarrell as its new president on February 9, following the retirement of longtime leader Dr. Ross Tomlin. Jarrell brings more than 30 years of educational experience to the role and said that he is excited for a forthcoming healthcare education building and to continue the college’s role as a strong partner for local businesses and the community. “I think simply put I just really feel at home here at TBCC and I feel very fortunate that the board of education here saw something in me and trusted me to be the next leader of this institution,” Jarrell said. “I believe this about especially community colleges in small, rural towns is that they are a very big part of the community not just from the teaching perspective but for larger parts of the community, so it just felt like a good time to get back to that kind of roots.” Jarrell was born and raised in southern Ohio and eastern Kentucky in a rural setting that he said reminded him of Tillamook in many ways. The first to attend college in his family, Jarrell went to Ohio University for his undergraduate degree, before continuing his studies at the University of Illinois. When his adviser at Illinois moved to the University of Oregon, Jarrell decided to follow, and earned a doctorate in biology and genetics in Eugene. For several years, Jarrell taught at the College of Southern Oregon, which has since become a university, before moving to southern California for more than two decades. In California, Jarrell first spent more than 20 years at Pasadena City College before a brief stint at Santa Barbara City College. Jarrell said that early in his career he found that he loved teaching and pursued a professional path in community colleges, where attention is focused on teaching rather than research, as it is at four-year institutions. Even with a more than a decade in administration under his belt, Jarrell said that he misses the reward See TBCC, Page A10

She also had previously painted murals at the Blue Heron, including one inside their candy shop. “When the opportunity came up that we need some murals, billboards, and other projects painted, she was the first person we went to,” Pastega said. “She’s a really talented artist.” Hansen hand-painted the billboards on a smaller scale and

his past summer, drivers may have noticed a change to the Blue Heron French Cheese Company’s signs. “Our billboards were showing their age,” Blue Heron’s Jason Pastega said. “We really needed to have them replaced and we were able to find an artist to paint them for us.” Julie Hansen was commissioned to paint the new bill-

then a copy was sized to fit five sign locations: one off Hwy 6 and four on the Blue Heron property in Tillamook. “They’re unique pieces of artwork,” Pastega said. “This was a great opportunity for us to display local art.” The new billboards incorporate all the different aspects that make up the atmosphere of the Blue Heron: nature, wine, cheese, bread, and the sense of a picnic at a farm. “The nice thing about her

working for the Blue Heron all those years is she really got to know the business,” Pastega said. “That was another benefit of having her do this is she knows what were all about. We gave her a few bullet points, but we liked her style and let her run with it.” Pastega said the Blue Heron is in the process of updating all remaining billboards and signs in the County. The Blue Heron French Cheese Company is located at 2001 Blue Heron Rd, Tillamook.

Tillamook County Parks Foundation seeks support, board members CHELSEA YARNELL For the Headlight Herald

Tillamook County, one of Oregon’s vacation destinations, is home to 15 day use areas, 21 boat launches, and six county campgrounds. “As the liaison Director of Tillamook County Parks for the past four months, I am on fire for parks,” Tillamook County Commissioner Mary Faith Bell said at the Board of County Commissioners Meeting on March 13. “They’re really just the gems of our County. We live in such a beautiful place that I think we take it for granted. If you haven’t been to Whalen Island lately, go and walk that trail because it’s beautiful. The Trask, Kilchis, and Barview [parks] are just beautiful. Webb County Park: people have been going there for generations. People say, ‘I was here when I was a child.
