Tillamook School Board drafts resolution for local control; vote to be held at meeting February 14th T

illamook School District #9 School Board has drafted a resolution for local control. This resolution voices the board’s discontent of the decisions made by the Oregon Department of Education, Oregon Health Authority, Oregon State and Federal elected officials and Oregon Governor Brown. The document is not yet completed but is public record and can be viewed on the school district’s website. According to the Tillamook school board chair, Matt Petty, “The board wants control of Tilla-
mook schools to be returned to the elected school board members who serve the community.” The board’s resolution clearly declares their position on COVID-19 prevention, vaccinating and masking children and the implementation of COVID-19 guidelines. The resolution, if approved at the next meeting, will be submitted to those government officials. Tillamook isn’t the first school board in the state to vote to do away with government masking requirements. In Oregon, there has been a recent wave of school boards sending resolutions to the state asking for local control of their schools. There has already been signifi-
cant community criticism of the board’s drafted resolution. Notably, there is an open letter to the board outlining concerns that has been gaining attention online with more than 400 community signatures of support. The five community-appointed school board members voting to approve or deny this resolution are Matt Petty, Board Chair, LaDonna Coon, Vice Chair, Kris Lachenmeier, Kurt Mizee and Jesse Werner. elebrating their 73rd Valentine’s Day together, Gerald (Jerry) and Marcella May Tichenor said their mutual passion for music brought them together. “In 1948, I was walking in the halls of Northwest Christian College (NCC) and heard someone playing the piano really well,” Jerry said. Inside one of the music halls he found Marcella playing the piano for a group of young men in one of the classrooms. “I waited there in the back until all of the men left and asked her if she would consider playing for me while I sang at church. That’s how it all started,” Jerry recounted. Jerry was born in Hollywood, California and after serving in the Navy during WWII he decided to attend Northwest Christian College (NCC) in Eugene, Oregon. He wanted to study music and education. That same year, Marcella Irwin, born in Portland, set out to study music and education at NCC. As fate would have it, their relationship grew from friendship to marriage. Together they have 4 children; Mark, Cheryl, Lori and Karen. They spent their life teaching in the schools and sharing their love of music with various churches across the United States. uring a passionate electronic address to the Oregon Legislature, Gov. Kate Brown said her legislative priorities for the short February session include helping working families by expanding workforce opportunities, affordable housing and child care. Brown will leave office at the end of the year due to the state’s term limits. She has served as governor since Feb. 2015. “I stand here today at a pivotal moment for Oregon,” Brown said. “Since I took office seven years ago, the world has fundamentally changed. Oregon has undoubtedly faced some of the most challenging times in our state’s history. However, even with all we’ve lost, we can see a path forward.” During her final State of the State address on Thursday, Feb. 3, Brown said the COVID-19 pandemic has been devastating, but Oregon’s economy is strong. “In my last year as Governor, I view every day, every moment, as one more opportunity to focus on the big and bold work we still have to do for Oregon’s working families,” she said.

A public ribbon cutting ceremony to reveal the updated Barbur Law Tillamook office is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 8 at the office at 1000 N. Main, Ste. 7. Community members are invited to attend. “I want the community to know we are here in Tilla-

That switch was made possible by the qualified staff Barbur found and hired from Tillamook, including attorney Laura Laskey and receptionist Corinne Kelly, Barbur said. “We built out the original office with the intent of basically being a small satellite office of the main practice in Milwaukie, but then we realized there was a need for services like this in Tillamook. Fortunately, we were able to find Corinne and Laura quickly, which allowed
us to establish the Tillamook office as its own practice,” Barbur said. The practice specializes in estate planning and real property law, including wills, trusts, estate administration, probate, contracts and business startups, among other “transactional law,” much like the Hooley practice they first stepped in for. “We are very happy to carry on Chris’ legacy as best we can,” Barbur said. “We do

While she is encouraged by the advancements Oregon has made to address climate change, more must be done the governor said. “Climate change is a hammer hitting us in the head,” she said. “We must act now, decisively, to lower carbon
emissions, transition to clean energy sources, and ensure a just transition for our historically-underserved communities.” Brown ended her speech with a passionate plea to those that will follow. “Find the opportunity, even in times of crisis. Especially, in times of crisis,” she said. “That’s how we continue on this journey of transformational change for Oregon. That’s how we pursue justice. That’s how we heal divides and collaborate in ways that serve our state. That’s how we honor this beautiful place we call home.”

Christine has a variety of beautiful things for sale in her boutique; antique and vintage jewelry, hats, purses, custom furniture, light fixtures and more. She also sources handmade products from local artisans like stained glass art pieces, silverware jewelry and honey. “I’ve sold a tiara almost
everyday I’ve been open here,” said Christine. “It’s been steady and I’ve gotten a lot of positive feedback so far,” she added. We aren’t an extremely formal suit-and-tie kind of practice.” Keeping services personable for clients is key for Barbur and his staff. So much of the work they do revolves around highly personal decision-making relating to property, wealth and other assets, he said. Connecting with the community also helps Barbur tailor his services to best meet the community’s needs. He plans to expand the Tillamook practice of offer additional help with land use, commercial leases and commercial development, because several people have sought help in those areas. “I’d love to be able to have a hand in the development that goes on locally. My goal is to really help business owners do commercial leases and commercial
purchases,” he said. “Right now you pretty much have to go to Portland to get those kinds of services, so it would be nice to offer a local place for people to be able to go to.” For several months, Barbur and Laskey shared an office space in a suite at the commercial complex that includes The Fern restaurant. As they took on more clients and began to settle into the Tillamook community, it quickly became apparent that they needed more space. “And then our neighbors moved out,” Barbur said. “The whole thing was a fortuitous series of events. We were able to get a great staff hired quickly, a space opened up right as we needed it, and we were able to find a good builder through our connections with the community and the Tillamook Chamber of Commerce.” Barbur Law, a Chamber member, primarily contracted with local companies to complete the renovation. Barbur said he even purchased most of its furniture from other Chamber members — many of whom
he met while attending the Chamber’s Mornings on Main Street networking event. “We’ve been able to use a lot of local companies to really fill everything out. Madeline’s Vintage Marketplace and Roby’s Furniture had great pieces to furnish the office, and PSI Inc. made our signs, so we are finally visible from Highway 101,” Barbur said. “It’s really nice to be able to use local, small businesses. I really appreciate the Chamber for making those connections for us.” The final renovation doubles the total square footage and adds a separate office for Laskey. “It’s night and day. It looks like and actual law office now,” Barbur said. Barbur said the pieces have finally “fallen into place” to firmly establish his practice in Tillamook. “We are here. We are in the community. We have our names on the door now,” Barbur said. “We have two competent attorneys, and we have competent support staff. We are established now, and we can serve you.”

It turns out that their Cape Meares house is ideally suited for solar energy, as it has south-facing, sloped roofs not shaded by trees. Sean calculates that solar energy will provide over half of their energy needs during our shorter, grayer winter days and a full 100% of their energy needs in the summer.
There is a significant capital investment to set up such a solar power system, although federal and state tax incentives are available and ongoing costs are minimal. In fact, there likely are tax credits for donating power back to the local electrical grid, as Sean has done each year in Portland and expects to do with their home here. As for emergency preparedness, you can’t get any better than this! Pam and Sean are leading the way. Some heartwarming news to report: a new grandchild! No, not for us (we have 14, thank you), but for Cape Meares resident Kate Merz.
Lola Surani Copabianco Merz is Kate’s first grandchild. Lola was born about three months ago to Kate’s son, of Nordic ancestry, and his wife, an indigenous Brazilian. Kate shared a picture with me, and that browneyed, auburn-haired baby girl with a flawless complexion is an absolute darling! We trust we’ll see Lola many times on our beach here as she grows up. Capt. Pete and Steve Walz drifted the Wilson River for steelhead the other day. No fish bit, but it was a beautiful day on the water. Hope you, too, got out and enjoyed our sunny winter weather.

An outdoor seating area is covered (and must be heated) as there were guests seated there on a cold, wet Saturday. I enjoyed the spicier of their hamburgers and a friend had clam chowder with salad for less than $20 each, before tip. “Sometimes, it’s not about being together… it’s about being there for each other.” Dale and I will have been married 46 years on Valentines Day. And we dated for six years! I met him dragging Broadway in high school. Boy, that was a lucky meeting. Our life has been one adventure after another and a whole lot of really hard work. But, we were doing it together… Happy Anniversary Dale. Once again I would like to remind you about the Community Coffee at the NCRD Kitchen. The public is invited each Monday and Wednesday from 9:30-11:30am. All are welcome and coffee and tea are provided. Come by yourself and/or bring a friend. They are located at 36155 9th St. Nehalem. Another fun group you can join is the Meals for Seniors at St. Mary’s by the Sea in Rockaway Beach! They meet each Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 10:30. Lunch is at 11:45. KIWANIS ACTIVE IN OUR COMMUNITY
T
illamook Kiwanis Club has been very active the past three months supporting the community of Tillamook through many projects. Proceeds of $706 raised through the holiday See’s Candy sales drive will benefit the club’s community giving fund and be distributed to nonprofit applicants in 2022. The club has provided grants to community partners for over 40 years. As it is for many, the Christmas season is a special time for Kiwanians. The club held its annual wreath auction, which raised $450 including club member donations. Proceeds supported the club’s Christmas Basket Project benefitting families in need. This annual project provided Christmas gift baskets for 15 families consisting of 51 children and 20 adults. This project was very successful thanks to the generous support of local merchants including the Tillamook County Creamery Association, the Tillamook County Food Bank, and other local merchants and individuals making donations of funds and toys. During the Christmas season, the club welcomed the Tillamook High School Chamber Choir to a
noon meeting, and enjoyed their gift of song. Kiwanis donated $300 to the choir to assist with competition expenses. Kiwanis provided $500 in support to Parker Fagan who is working on a project to complete his Eagle Scout requirements. At a weekly club meeting, Parker spoke about his project to erect a lighted flagpole bearing the US flag at our YMCA. For more information about this project contact the Tillamook YMCA. This Spring Kiwanis will be busy working on its largest fundraiser, the annual KT Days Scholarship Drive, which kicks off in late February. The club has been doing this drive since 1955 and through 2021 has awarded a total of $568,000 to 477 students across all three high schools in Tillamook County, and to students at Tillamook Bay Community College through the club’s annual Lyle Specht Scholarship. Funds for this effort come from advertisements purchased from Kiwanis by local businesses and others that are read on the air at KTIL, and also through community donations. Scholarship applications have been given
to county high schools and are due March 30. Did you know that Tillamook High School has a Kiwanis Key Club for students? Key Clubs are student-led high school organizations whose members help make the world a better place through their service to the community. Involvement helps individuals grow as leaders by answering the call to lead, and summoning courage to engage in developing the heart to serve. Tillamook Kiwanis Club is proud to be a long time sponsor of the Tillamook High School Key Club. One of their activities is the Annual High School Food Drive supporting Tillamook Food Bank. Another annual event is the “Out of Darkness Walk” to bring awareness to mental health issues of high school students. Tillamook Kiwanis Club recently added four new club members. uring the Tillamook Chamber Community Awards Banquet at the end of January, I had the pleasure of introducing the Tillamook Chamber Community Foundation, a new organization that I’m extremely excited to bring to Tillamook County. Now I want to recap what I shared at the banquet for those of you who couldn’t make it — or anyone who simply wants to learn more. The purpose of the Tillamook Chamber Community Foundation is to build and coordinate leadership, fundraising and capacity for projects that enhance the vitality of communities in Tillamook. The 501(c)3 nonprofit strives to change lives by building strong communities throughout Tillamook County. At its heart, the Foundation is a community catalyst, convener and champion. Let me explain each of those ideas a little bit more directly. The Foundation acts as a catalyst for bringing to life great ideas that can enhance our community through its Community Investment Initiative. This Foundation program will provide financial and social capital investments to empower community members to make their plans a reality. The initial focus will be items such as beautification efforts and public art; community crisis response; and enhanced playgrounds, sport areas and pet amenities in public spaces. The longterm goal for this is to build an endowment to provide ongoing financial and social capital investments to empower community members to make their plans a reality. The Foundation serves as a convener by bringing together local nonprofits, governments and businesses to build synergy and capacity

in our communities. Many of our local agencies and businesses are working toward the same vision, but often they’re working independently of each other. We know are stronger when we act as a single community, so the Foundation’s Stable Table will unify all of those efforts. This program will include quarterly roundtables of community partners, equitable partnerships among organizations and assistance for program implementation. The Foundation becomes a champion for Tillamook County young adults. We want to empower future community and civic leaders by championing meaningful relationships, personal growth and community engagement. The Young Pros Tillamook network aids us in this effort by establishing a group for likeminded young professionals to connect, grow and engage together and with their community (more on that program soon). The Foundation also looks to establish coaching and mentorship programs for young leaders. You might notice that a lot of the work the Tillamook Chamber Community Foundation focuses on is similar to the existing work of the Chamber. Both organizations focus on building strong community. But there are two big differences that I think are worth highlighting. The first is that the Foundation is a community organization that covers

First of all, each of our library locations have free computer access for you to do your job searching and to fill out online applications. Gone are the days when you could use a paper application form to get a job. Many employers require an online application now. We can offer help with creating resumes and cover letters, and we also have printing, faxing, and scanning services to help you out as well. If you don’t have a professional email address for those applications, we can help you create one to stand out in the crowd. One more very valuable tool we have is a database called Learning Express. It has classes, tests, tutorials, and so much more to help those seeking their first job, as well as help for those looking to advance their career. Whether you are in high school, college, or a seasoned professional, this database has something for you. You can access it from our library website. Now, back to my paper route story. My first job was as a Saturday morning delivery boy of the familyfriendly weekly newspaper called Grit. It was a wonderful publication filled with feel-good stories and other uplifting, wholesome content. Each week, I would load the papers into a cloth sling that just barely held all 44 copies of the newspaper. Then, with the heavy bag thrown over my shoulder, I would hop onto my bike and begin pedaling my route, all around my tiny Iowa town. On snowy days, I would walk, trudging through snowdrifts along the way. This was subscriberbased so I would have to walk up to each house on the route, knock on the door, and collect my 20 cents. I would

You don’t have to be a member of the Tillamook Chamber to benefit from the programs offered through the Foundation (though we of course hope you’ll consider membership into the Chamber, because there are lots of other great benefits there, too). Where the Chamber builds strong community so businesses can thrive, the Foundation builds strong communities to change lives throughout the county. The second difference is that the Foundation is a 501(c)3 organization, whereas the Chamber is a 501(c)6. Both of these tax codes indicate nonprofit status, but the Foundation’s status is classified as a public charity and specifically makes donations to the Foundation tax deductible. A huge part of the Foundation’s upstart is thanks to generous donations from the Mario and Alma Pastega Family Foundation and the Tillamook County Creamery Association. Both organizations provided match money, which helped us double the first $8,000 worth of donations from the community. Their generosity and support gave the Foundation a strong financial basis from which to grow. All of the Foundation’s work boils down to one focused goal: We strive to change the lives of those we reach for the better. Are you ready to change lives with us? get to keep 7 cents profit for each paper sold. Luckily for me, many people would pay with a quarter and let me keep the nickel change as a tip. Otherwise, my profit for the whole week would have only been about three dollars! Nevertheless, it was a great first job. One of my favorite memories was dealing with old Mrs. Gearhart. On wintry days, she would always feel sorry for me and insist that I come in and warm up. She would turn up the oven to 400 degrees and make me sit on a chair in front of the open oven. The funny part is she was just my second stop on the route so I hardly had a chance to get cold yet! Another exciting stop was at an apartment above the general store. The lady who lived there was deaf and could not hear me knock, so she gave me permission to just come in without knocking and get the money out of the little cup on her kitchen table. This scared me to pieces because she would always be sitting there and no matter how loud I stomped or called out her name, she would never hear me. But as soon as I came into her field of vision, she would startle like she just sat down on a thumbtack, arms flailing, and voice shrieking! That was almost too much for a ten-year-old boy to handle. To reward myself for living through that weekly trauma, I would stop in the general store and buy some penny candy. Some of my favorite indulgences included root beer barrels, jaw breakers, and pixie sticks which were basically paper straws filled with colored sugar. I have to say, even though I did not really rake in the money, it was one of the best jobs I ever had. The library staff may not be able to find you a paper route job, but there are lots of other possibilities out there!

Yep, we did that together
The front-page story of the Headlight Herald January 25,2022 issue read “Tillamook Bay South Jetty funding request of $62M approved.” The second paragraph states: “The funding comes from the $22.81 billion in supplemental funding provided in two recently enacted laws (Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and 2022 Disaster Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act) … This is a triumphant success for Tillamook County and for the state Oregon.” The article explains the histories of the North and South Jetties, stating that in order for the jetties to provide a safe passage for boats the jetties must be lined up. The North Jetty was repaired in 2009 but the South Jetty was not and has deteriorated, which results in a deadly combination of waves and currents. These hazardous conditions have caused deaths and injuries over the years. The article interviewed a retired Coast Guard veteran who said he knows some “very tough fishermen” who will not cross the bar because it is so dangerous. The dangers affect fishermen, recreational and commercial. The article states that the risk has stopped commercial fishermen from delivering their product to the Port of Garibaldi. Creating a safe passage between the jetties will result in more jobs and positive economic impact for Garibaldi and the surrounding area. On March 31, 2021, President Joe Biden unveiled his $2.3 trillion Infrastructure and American Jobs Plan. After many negotiations, President Biden signed the bipartisan bill which provided funds for many projects and jobs, one of them being improvement of the South Jetty. I am a life-long Democrat because it is my belief that we are all Americans, and that the welfare of all of us must be our goal. I am proud of our Democratic president who got the ball rolling on this important bill that eventually passed with bipartisan votes. Yes, progress can be a reality if we work together for the welfare of all. I want to join with others to help all Americans experience a “safer passage” through life’s turbulent waters. I have been very fortunate in my life. I am not wealthy but I have enough. My vision of The American Dream is not one where we all live a life of luxury, but one where everyone has at least enough to live life with dignity. We all want to live a life with dignity, don’t we? Repair of the South Jetty will create a “safe passage” in and out of the Port of Garibaldi. In the future when you go between the jetties and are not praying for your life, or you see commercial fishing boats bring their catch into the Port, remember that it is a result of Americans working together for the good of all. Every day Americans scurry off in winter darkness to work physical construction sites and business-as-usual office settings. But where are folks scurrying off to work on social construction programs to build a better society and renew our nation’s traditional commitment to ethical living? We are bending our ingenuity to perfect drone use, green materials, and smart machinery in construction technology. We gleefully bend our ingenuity to work on hands-free driving, water jetpacks, talking hearing aids, and Mars technology. But where is the programming to develop wise leaders in society and, for example, in social media, rather than the current crop of non-stop exploiters? Where are the shops working hard to train elected officials from turning into oligarchs and monarchists, to help folks read and understand the Constitution, to promote rule of law and responsible citizenship, to promote more seriousness and less silliness in cultural entertainment, to put children, youth and mature adults in touch with history? We have backslidden so badly in historical literacy that our schools and universities never think to include the Bible as a genuine secular history text, because it has some religion in it. Response to letter printed Feb. 1, Headlight The letter printed in the 2/1/2022 issue under the heading “Two Years of Nonsense” is mislabeled. The heading should read “Twenty one column inches of drivel”. I wish you had stuck to your 300-word rule for letters, we would have at least been spared 460 words of this ranting diatribe. I’m not sure what her sources are, but it sure smells like Breitbart News or Epoch Times. Both are completely unreliable and exist to promote discord and propagate misinformation. I rely on my time-tested friends, The New York Times, Scientific American, Harper’s, and The Atlantic. Dr. Fauci does not issue commands, he issues advice. AIDS is no longer a death sentence, it is a treatable, survivable disease. Until the last paragraph (taken from Proverbs 6:6-19), I found nothing in the letter that was cogent, truthful, or relevant. I do believe that in this time of Covid, there is truth in what the book of Proverbs says, “a false witness the soweth lies and he that soweth discord among brethren” is unpleasing to the Lord and to every clearthinking individual. eter William “Bill” Dorsett was born February 2, 1930 in McDonough, Illinois to Glen and Edith (Hamm) Dorsett and passed away January 15, 2022 in Tillamook, Oregon at the age of 91. Bill grew up and attended school in Wichita, Kansas. He served in the military during the Korean Conflict. He married Paula A. Murphy on December 25, 1950 in Warrenton, Oregon while being stationed at Tongue Point in Astoria. Bill was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1952. Bill and Paula then moved back to Wichita, Kansas where he was a furrier and insurance salesman. In 1961 Bill moved his family to Salem, Oregon and became a salesman for Society Candy Company. In 1972 Bill

arol Linn Newman was born on August 4, 1942 to Wilbur T. Cooney and Margaret Rogan Cooney in Corvallis, Oregon. She joined her older brother Ben and was later followed by her younger brothers Don and Clark. Linn attended elementary school and high school in Corvallis and then went on to Oregon State where she received her degree in elementary education. Prior to graduating, she married Melvin Rawie, from whom she was later divorced. She began her teaching career in Corvallis where she met and married Tommy M. Epperly of Philomath. She and Tom soon moved to Guam where they taught for four years. After their second year there, they enjoyed a trip literally around the world, visiting sixteen countries. They stayed on Guam for another two years, during which time their daughter Susan Marie Epperly was born. When they returned to the mainland, Tom took a job as a principal in Gresham while Linn settled into the role of homemaker and mother. Sadly, Tom died in 1979. Linn returned to teaching, working first as a substitute in the Reynolds School District, then at Wilkes Elementary, and later at Troutdale Elementary. After having been widowed, Linn met and married Douglas Frank Newman. They lived in Gresham until their daughters Susan and

teven Casey Gould of Tillamook died on Jan. 8, 2022. He was born on July 13, 1960, he was 61. Services are Sat. Feb. 19 at 12 noon at Trask River RV.
Jamie finished public school. For years, Linn and Doug enjoyed hosting friends and family at their coastal retreat in Cape Meares for countless parties and celebrations, including Susan’s wedding. When the two retired, they relocated to Tillamook, where they enjoyed working together on their home and property. They also took pleasure in outdoor activities like clamming and walking on the beach; exercising at the Y; traveling; family gatherings; and meeting friends. Doug brought three adult daughters to the relationship. During their time in Tillamook, Doug’s daughter Jennifer and her daughter Laira spent many weekends in Tillamook with Doug and Linn, during which time Linn took much joy in her role as a Grandma. Carol Linn Newman of Tillamook died peacefully, surrounded by her immediate family, after a prolonged hospitalization at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center. She was 79. Linn is survived by her husband of more than 41 years, Doug Newman; daughter Susan Epperly and her husband Shane; step-daughters Jamie and Jennifer Newman; Jennifer’s daughter Laira; and Linn’s three brothers. Linn was delighted by babies; baked legendary frosted sugar cookies and lemon merengue pies; loved her flower garden (but loved the deer that nibbled on it even more); and always glowed in her signature color: sunny yellow. She was, indeed, sunshine incarnate. A service was held in Tillamook followed by interment at Sunset Heights Memorial Gardens. Memorial donations will be welcomed by the Tillamook County Family YMCA, where Linn enjoyed walking with her gym friends three times a week.

udy Ann Henderson was born on March 12, 1956 in Wheeler, Oregon to Barbara and Eugene Henderson. She passed away on January 4, 2022 at the age of 65. She was the oldest of 8 children. Judy attended Nehalem Grade School and Neah-KahNie High School graduating in 1974. Graduated from George Fox University in 1978 with a degree in History. She had a lifelong love of history and dates, especially birth dates. If she ever met
you, she knew your birth date. She was a proud Tillamook County pioneer, loved genealogy and was very proud of the fact her family settled in the Nehalem area in 1869. She loved playing board games with her nieces and nephews and kept them entertained telling them of her college days. She loved music and had an extensive collection of records. She also loved the color blue, any color was fine as long as it was blue. She was kind, loving and generous to a fault and will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Survivors include her siblings: Carol Richmond (Bill), Barbara Henderson, Gene Henderson (Joan), Gary Henderson, Linda Jones (Jeff), Don Henderson, Steve Henderson (Jennifer), many nieces, nephews, family and friends. He was very involved in St. Alban’s Church and a member of many lodges and clubs including: Tillamook Elk’s Lodge, Tillamook Masonic Lodge, Albert Pike Scottish Rite, Tillamook’s Moose Lodge, Al Kader Shrine Club, Tillamook American legion Post 47, Life Member of Disabled American Veterans and Past State Commander of the Disabled American Veterans. Jim served in the Army during Vietnam and was honorably discharged in 1970. Jim taught at ITT Tech
and IRCO in Portland for his career. He was a volunteer at OMSI, and played guitar for Benny and the Bay City Rockers. Pauline (Haluska) Griffith (AKA Grandma Beach) June 6, 1922 - Jan. 24, 2022

orn June 6, 1922 in Des Moines Iowa to Anna & Andrew Haluska. Pauline was raised in a large family with nine siblings, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Pauline grew up in a modest and humble home. Living through the depression set the stage for how she raised her family, finding joy and happiness with what she had and setting a good example for the rest of us to follow. Her family began when she met John Griffith, fell in love, and married on May 11th, 1946. Soon after getting married they left Iowa and their families behind to move to Oregon, making Oceanside her forever home. Pauline was the epitome of love, selfless to a T, always putting the needs of others before her own. She was beautiful inside and out and hung her faith in the lord. Throughout her entire life,
Pauline had the most incredible work ethic, never shying away from doing what was best for her family. During World War II, she worked in an ammunition factory. Once she and John settled in Oceanside, she ironed clothes, cleaned cabins at Hillcrest Court, worked at the old grocery store (now Roseanna’s) and even became certified to work in the old post office. Her last and most memorable job was being the owner and operator of the Anchor Inn Tavern. She truly loved being a part of the community and enjoyed meeting new people and creating lasting memories. In her spare time, Pauline loved walking on the beach and up Maxwell Mountain, working outside in the yard, playing cards and was the queen of cribbage. Later in life, she embraced the snow bird life and enjoyed spending her winters in Arizona. Pauline is survived by her three children: Jim Griffith and his wife Jane, Jerry Griffith and his wife Sylvia and Jill Griffith Anestand. In addition to her three children, Pauline was blessed with eleven grandchildren, and ten grandchildren. For those of you who were blessed to know Pauline, know what a treasure she was. She will be missed dearly and forever in our hearts.
Democratic candidate Nick Kristof visits coast, remains hopeful to be on ballot Hilary Dorsey Country Media Nicholas Kristof, Democratic candidate for governor, visited Lincoln City and surrounding areas last week, meeting with city officials and local government to get a sense of challenges and how his campaign will address them. Kristof, 62 years old, was a journalist for The New York Times for many years, moved back to Oregon and is running for governor. In an announcement earlier this month, Secretary of State Shemia Fagan announced her office was rejecting Kristof’s bid to run for governor because he does not meet the state’s three-year residency requirement. Kristof grew up on his family’s sheep and cherry farm outside Yamhill. In Yamhill schools, he discovered a love for journalism, reporting in the county for the News-Register in McMinnville and later interning at the Statesman Journal and The Oregonian. After college and graduate school, he worked at The New York Times, winning two Pulitzer Prizes. Kristof would visit Lincoln City ever since he was a kid. He raised his kids driving back to the area. It is a place that is special to his family. Kristof said he decided to run for governor because he wants to fix the problems around Oregon, including homelessness, house affordability, better education from preschool to higher education, and a lack of medical health services. He said he saw devastation in his hometown of Yamhill when good jobs left and opportunity declined. He sees this parallel
between Yamhill and the coast. He wants to make sure other kids have the opportunities he had. “I’m doing a tour of the North Coast,” Kristof said of visiting Lincoln City. “We started in Astoria, visited Warrenton, Manzanita. We’ve been stopping place after place.” After stopping by The News Guard office, Kristof was planning to meet with Mayor Susan Wahlke and State Rep. David Gomberg. Kristof said he is trying to get a sense of some of the challenges on the coast and how to address them. One of the major challenges he has seen so far is the need for more workforce housing, which can lead to homelessness. “It’s a problem along the coast,” Kristof said. Kristof said child care is another issue he would focus on, as well as affordable housing, addiction treatment and mental health services. Through his experience
writing for The New York Times, Kristof said he has experience standing up for people who have been left behind. “Too often, state government doesn’t listen,” Kristof said. “We need a governor who can offer a vision for Oregon. I think we need some fresh blood and a new perspective.” The Supreme Court has taken Kristof’s case for running for governor. He said he appreciates their acknowledgment. The final brief was due Wednesday, Jan. 26. Kristof hopes to hear a decision on whether he can run by early February. He remains confident that he will be on the ballot in May. The Bobcats (10-2 NWL, 13-6 overall) are tied with the Vernonia High Loggers (10-2 NWL, 16-3) for second place in the standings with two games remaining in the regular season. The Lady Bobcats are hoping to reach the Class 2A state playoffs for the first time since 2009. The Bobcats will have have a very good chance of accomplishing their goal if they continue playing well and then finish among the top two teams in the NWL District tournament Feb. 19 at Vernonia High School. The Bobcats, guided by Coach Tevin Gianella, will be seeking their sixth straight
NWL win when they meet the No. 1 ranked Faith Bible High Falcons (12-0 league, 22-1 overall) in their next game Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Forest Hills Lutheran High School in Hillsboro. Nestucca concludes the regular season with a 6 p.m. home game on Senior Night Feb. 11 versus Vernonia at Nestucca High School. “If we can beat Vernonia on Friday, then we’ll be the No. 2 seed in the upcoming district tournament, so that’s a real big game for us at home,” said Gianella. “We have some big games coming up and so we have to find a way to win those. We’re close to where we need to be, we’re knocking on the door and we have to beat Vernonia and I think we can do that. I feel like we have a state worthy team.” The Bobcats had won four straight games going into a nonleague matchup Feb. 2 on the road against the No.
13 ranked Riverdale High Mavericks (9-0 league, 17-6 overall) of the Class 3A Lewis & Clark League. The Bobcats, guided by Coach Tevin Gianella, were seeking a fifth straight victory and they had a chance to win, while leading in the second quarter. The Mavericks took control of a close game though by building a double-digit third quarter lead and then they maintained their momentun to pull out a 44-35 win at Riverdale High School in Portland. “They (Mavericks) are a league champion and they’re a pretty good team, but we just had a stretch in the third quarter when we couldn’t get a bucket,” said Gianella. “The girls efforts were great, but we just came up a little bit short. It was a real close game and for some reason we just couldn’t make our free throws. We work on them every day at practice, but
it’s just some kind of mental thing. A good basketball team has to make them and it’s our achilles heel for sure.” The contest was a seesaw battle early with six lead changes and four ties in the first half. In a low scoring first quarter, Nestucca took its first lead of the game when senior guard Rachel Strober (22 points) fired in a jumper from the perimeter for a 4-2 Bobcat lead. Strober’s layup lifted the Bobcats in front 6-5 at the end of the first quarter. “Sometimes I have on nights and sometimes I have off, but tonight I was feeling pretty good and we were close and we almost came back, so it was really a fun game,” said Strober. “Everyone on the team was hustling really hard. We’re hoping to win our last two regular season games. I think we can go pretty far and our goal is to go to Pendleton.” The eight-team Class 2A state tournament will be held in Pendleton Mar. 3-5. Strober, one of four Bobcat seniors, later sank a three-point field goal, giving Nestucca its largest lead of the game at 9-7 in the second quarter. Strober had a total of four three-pointers, which was more than Riverdale’s entire team had. The Mavericks made only one long range three-point field goal. “Rachel is having a great senior year and she did really well tonight and she’s averaging 15 points per game,” said Gianella. Following their 4-0 run, the Mavericks were on top 11-9. A 15-foot jumper from the side by Strober knotted the score for the final time of the game at 11-11. A 6-0 Mavericks run made it 17-11. The Bobcats fought back, outscoring the Mavericks 5-2, trimming the margin to 19-16 at halftime. The Bobcats made a valiant comeback effort in the fourth and they trimmed the deficit to 39-33 when Strober sank a three-pointer from the corner with 3:46 remaining in the game. The Mavericks regained control though as they concluded the contest and outscored the Bobcats 5-2 over the final three minutes to get their eighth consecutive win. Strober’s 22 points was just three short of her careerhigh of 25, which she had in

The contest might’ve had a different outcome if the Bobcats shot better at the free throw line. Nestucca shot only seven percent (1-for-13) at the line, while the Mavericks shot 100 percent (7-for-7).

Benefits of exploring outdoors ‑ Yes, even in the winter I
t’s official – 6 more weeks of winter. Or at least that’s what Punxsutawney Phil, the famous groundhog, concluded when he saw his shadow on February 2nd. The good news is that we have reached the point in the year where the days are starting to get a little bit longer. In fact, between now and daylight savings on March 13th we will have gained over an hour and a half of additional daylight! And yet, we are still in the midst of winter weather – rain, wind, ice, fog, and maybe the occasional snowflake. It can be difficult to find
any excitement in stepping outside to chilly air and sprinkling raindrops, but building a little bit of movement and physical activity into each day can have profound effects on how we feel. Physical activity not only improves balance and helps strengthen bones, but it also releases chemicals in your brain that boost mood, self-esteem, and concentration. So what can you do to stay active during winter weather? We’ve collected a few tips below: 1. Gather Waterproof Gear You don’t need super-fancy items, but a waterproof jacket
can make a world of difference when the rain is coming down. It’s also important to have a few comfortable layers of clothing that can be easily added or removed as the temperature fluctuates. (It’s worth noting that cotton traps moisture once it’s wet, either with sweat or rain, and this will actually make you feel colder if you’re using it as your base layer. Check your tags for a lightweight polyester, wool, or polypropylene item to wear closest to your skin). 2. Monitor the Weather (and plan ahead!) Weather forecasts are often available a few days in ad-
vance, and a quick glance on your phone will usually give you a decent idea of which day might be warmer or when there might be a break in the rain during a drizzling afternoon. 3. Start Simple A stroll around your neighborhood or a quick walk through a park or along the beach is a great way to stretch out after a long day. You might try decompressing by listening to music, a podcast, or calling a loved one while you walk. Prep Time: 15 minutes Cook Time: 5 minutes Ingredients - ½ cup honey (see Notes) - 1 cup peanut butter - 2 cups rice cereal - 2 cups quick oats - 1 cup raisins or other dried fruit Directions 1. Wash hands with soap and water. 2. In a saucepan, bring honey to a boil. 3. Reduce heat to low and stir in peanut butter. 4. Add cereal, oats and raisins; mix well. Remove from heat 5. Lightly grease an 8x8-inch baking pan. Press mixture into pan. When cool, cut into 16 bars. 6. Store in an airtight container for up to a week. Notes • Try this recipe with 4 cups of unsweetened cereal flakes instead of the rice cereal and oats. • Honey is not recommended for children under 1 year old. • To avoid peanuts or peanut butter, try sunflower seeds or sunflower seed butter. The Water Treatment Plant Manager is responsible for managing and maintaining the district’s facilities, including two ultrafiltration membrane treatment facilities, three pump stations, five water storage reservoirs, and the associated conveyance pipelines for these systems. The water district provides service for the communities of both Oceanside and Cape Meares which together total around 850 service connections. This is a hands-on position that requires the physical ability to work in in the field installing and repairing distribution systems, as well as operating and maintaining two highly automated processing plants. It will require managing a two-person operational staff to repair water leaks and install new services connections as well as regular maintenance on both the treatment facilities and distribution system. Key responsibilities include but are not limited to: • Participates in and leads the Operations staff in both water treatment and distribution. • Supervises employees of the water treatment plant; manages staffing and operational activities, including operational changes, maintenance priorities, scheduling and compliance with regulations from federal, state, and local agencies • Ensures training for personnel and enforces safety policies and procedures. • Receives and resolves customer complaints and concerns. • Determines the means and methods to measure plant performance relative to established benchmarks. • Carries out an extensive program of chemical and biological water testing as required by current and proposed drinking water regulations; determines modifications needed to maintain compliance with the Safe Drinking Water Act. • Ensures preparation and maintenance of accurate records, reports, evaluations and proposals on current and long-range district water treatment plant needs. • Participates in planning annual water treatment plant budget, including determining capital purchases and staffing needs, and prioritizing requests and allocation of resources. • Helps identify, test, qualify and register potential new raw water sources to be used by the district in an emergency.
• Supervises the procurement of parts chemicals and services from vendors. • Works with homeowners, engineers and contractors to determine the best plan of action for service needs. • Reports directly to Oceanside Water District’s board of commissioners, including preparing and presenting monthly reports • Responds to emergency, after hours callouts as needed. Minimum qualifications: • Level 2 water Treatment Certification • Level 1 Distribution Certification • 5 years’ experience in a supervisory capacity • Must reside within 30 minutes driving distance from the two operating plants. Preferred Qualifications: • Five years’ experience operating a membrane water treatment facility (special consideration for experience with WesTech ultrafiltration systems) • Two years’ experience in distribution • Experience with Budget and Project planning • Good computer skills in basic systems such as Word and Excel, as well as familiarity with factory automation and control systems. • Strong interpersonal skills in dealing with staff, consumers, regulatory agencies and vendors. Annual Agency Report for Fiscal Year Ending June 30, 2021 The Tillamook Urban Renewal Agency (TURA) has compiled the agency’s Annual Report for the Fiscal Year ending June 30, 2021 in accordance with ORS 457.460. The Annual Report is available online at the City website at www.tillamookor.gov under the “Documents” tab and available for inspection at Tillamook City Hall, 210 Laurel Ave, Tillamook, OR 97141. Tax Revenues for the 2020-2021 for TURA were assessed by Tillamook County in the amount of $544,471.76. TURA received $522,469 in current taxes and $11,606 in prior year taxes. TURA budgeted $552,000 for fiscal year 2020-2021. The funds received were spent on various projects within the district including façade improvements and commercial renovations. The Agency has also committed funds to a number of long-term public interest projects, such as the Tillamook Library Foundation Park and drainage improvements near the Hadley Road soccer field. The information below shows the taxing district information. She plays with Ping-Pong balls, lasers and felt mice. Her previous owner had to give her up due to a move to a no-pets apartment.
