COVID-19 update: Rollout of vaccines continues Hilary Dorsey Staff Writer illamook County Health Department provided a COVID-19 vaccine update during a Tillamook County Board of Commissioners meeting Wednesday, Jan. 27. Administrator Marlene Putman said Tillamook County is at 373 positive cases, as of Jan. 27. People should continue to use precautions to keep the case count down. “We have 1,250 doses allocated for Phase 1A,” Putman said. “That will hopefully be 1,350 if we receive an additional 100 today.” As of Jan. 27, 950 individuals in the county have been vaccinated, Putman added. “We are working through and expect to

finish up our Group 1, which is mainly health care providers in that group,” Putman said. “We will close that out here today we hope.” The health department hopes to finish vaccinating those in Phase 1A, Group 2, by the end of the week. Group 2 includes long-term and group living facilities, foster care, hospice, mobile crisis units and staff in correctional setting. The health department is also working on Groups 2 and 3. Educators were approved to begin receiving the vaccine Jan. 25. The health department has reached out and gathered information from public and private schools. They will see next week if there are enough vaccines to cover all educators in the county. For those 65 years

and older, there is no new date identified yet to receive the vaccine. “We will continue to develop our strategies for large events for vaccine distributions,” Putman said. “We’ll also be setting up a new scheduling software.” Commissioner Erin Skaar said it is going to take a while to get everyone in Tillamook County vaccinated. Some counties are vaccinating seniors currently, but Tillamook County is still working on health care providers and long-term care facilities. Chair Mary Faith Bell said vaccines are being distributed by population. Vaccine clinics are being set up for Phase 1A. “We’re all frustrated that we’re not getting

erving the community is something the owners and management of Roby’s Furniture and Appliance take very seriously. “For the last 11-years all six Roby’s stores on the coast close on this day to do a community service project,” Tillamook Store Manager Natalie Rieger said, while pushing a large wheelbarrow full of gravel to fill in holes on the hiking trail. “But this year has been a little different, we had to look for an outside project due to social distancing.” This year, the Roby’s teaming Tillamook shut down the store on Wednesday (Jan. 27) and all 22-employees converged on Kilchis Point Reserve to give the

popular park a sprucing up. According to Rieger, the Roby’s team along with new Pioneer Museum Director, Jakob Wood worked all day filling in holes on trails, fixing bridges and building directional signs. Kilchis Point Reserve is managed by the Pioneer Museum as part of a trust set up years ago. When Wood was approached by Rieger to offer their day of service, he was all in. “I jumped at the opportunity to team up the Roby’s team,” Wood said. “They are amazing, and we are getting a lot of much needed maintenance and repairs done today, we are very grateful for their help.” Roby’s furnishes all the materials and

labor for the day. In all, Rieger said all six stores were doing projects that day, with a total of over 90 employees, owners and management all rolling up their sleeves for a day of service working in their communities. Past projects included working with Tillamook High School, Kilchis House and many more. “This year we focused on outdoor projects,” Rieger said. “We got a break in the weather so we’re happy to be out here helping in our community.”

Tillamook County Pioneer Museum welcomes new director T

he Tillamook County Pioneer Museum (TCPM) welcomes its new director, Jaykob Wood. Wood, who originally hails from Michigan, moved to Oregon in 2018 and worked in federal and state public lands as a park ranger before coming to work for TCPM. “In my role as museum director, I hope to build and foster relationships with other

historical and ecological organizations, and to broaden the museum’s local involvement,” Wood said. “Most of all, I look forward to becoming a member of the Tillamook County community and making this area my home.” Wood, 27, graduated from the University of Michigan in 2015 with a Bachelor of Arts in anthropology, history, and museum studies. While in college, he worked as a museum docent at the University of Michigan Museum of Natural History. He started his career as a field archaeologist and later, an interpretive ranger. It was his experi-

ence working with the public that inspired Wood to pursue a career that would allow him to connect visitors to their cultural and natural history. “This job is multi-faceted, and it’s not just front-line work: The museum director is responsible for keeping everything running in the museum, so that Tillamook residents can use this platform to connect with their heritage,” Wood said. “There is an amazing collection and wonderful permanent and temporary exhibits at the TCPM. Now, I have the pleasure of making those artifacts relevant to present-day visitors.” Wood is well-versed in informal educational standards

Tillamook County Community Health Centers reported during a Tillamook County Leadership call Friday, Jan. 29, that the county had 10 new confirmed positive cases this week. “We don’t have anyone in Tillamook County that is currently hospitalized for COVID-19,” Administrator Marlene Putman said. “We’re currently monitoring 18 individuals.” The health center continues to provide COVID-19 testing. If you have symptoms, schedule an appointment to get tested at the health center’s acute clinic at 2111 8th St. in Tillamook. Call 503-8423900 to make an appointment. The county’s risk level is Low Risk, effective Jan. 29. The county had previously been at Extreme Risk. “We can’t let our guard down,” Putman said. “We must continue to be cautious and follow the recommendations for COVID-19 guideline precautions like wearing a mask, watching your distance and washing your hands.” The health department receives information on the amount of vaccine the county will receive each week. They get the notice on Thursdays and receive the delivery the following week. They distribute doses to vaccine partners Adventist Health, Rinehart Clinic and Nehalem Bay Fire & Rescue. Currently, the health department has been working with its vaccine partners to vaccinate those in Phase 1A. Those who skipped or missed out on the vaccine and are eligible under Phase 1A are always eligible to receive the vaccine. As of Jan. 28, 1,179 doses of the Moderna vaccine have been administered in the county, according to the health department. Adventist Health has administered 621 doses, the health department has administered 375 doses with an expected additional 100 expected Jan. 29, Rinehart Clinic has administered 20, and Nehalem Bay Fire & Rescue has administered 163, as of Jan. 28. Booster shots are also beginning to occur for those who have received the first shot. Emergency Coordinator Ed Colson said Phase 1A, Group 1 should be finished soon. Vaccine partners are continuing to vaccinate anyone in that group who missed their shot. “For Groups 3-4, we’re continuing to work on addressing this group through outreach and vaccination scheduling,” Colson said. “Some categories still need to be scheduled within these groups but that is progressing.” Vaccine partners have begun scheduling vaccines for public and private schools beginning the week of Feb. 1. The state is eligible to start vaccinating those 80 years old and older beginning Feb. 8. Groups 3-5 include those between 65-75 and older and will be scheduled when available. “The state estimates that Phase 1B will be about 12-15 weeks,” Colson said. The health department is continuing to develop strategies for their vaccine pod at the Tillamook County Fairgrounds and for larger vaccine events. They are working on scheduling those events for the future. “Many of the people we have outreached to have accepted the vaccine, very few have not,” Colson said. “As more vaccines are coming online, we’re starting to see the change in people’s acceptance go towards receiving the vaccine.” The health department reports zero waste of doses of the vaccine. Putman said they are careful to monitor and have a backup list to administer doses if there are any extra. The Salmonberry Trail Project is moving forward with the Rockaway Beach Connector (Phase 1) project. The Tillamook County Board of Commissioners signed a letter of support for the project during a meeting Wednesday, Jan. 27. The project is a multi-use bicycle and pedestrian project following 86 miles of restored Tillamook Bay rail rightof-way. The proposed route follows the Port of Tillamook

Bay Railway and terminates in Banks. Sarah Absher, director of the Tillamook County Department of Community Development, said during the meeting that the trail team is looking to pursue a grant from Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT). “This is funding that is available for project development projects, capital improvement or construction improvement projects of existing infrastructure,” Absher said. The Rockaway Beach Con-

nector project will provide a critical link between residential areas, local businesses, the beach and other natural areas. The proposed trail is central to a larger system that builds off existing planning and recent ODOT investments at the Washington Street crossing in Rockaway Beach. Tillamook County has been working on the trail for 10 years, Commissioner Erin Skaar said. The Rockaway Beach Connector will be used by visitors and residents. “This is something that has

been worked on a long time,” Vice-Chair David Yamamoto said. “There are so many people working behind the scenes to bring this to fruition.” Yamamoto said the Salmonberry is a long trail that takes a lot of planning. Chair Mary Faith Bell said she is excited for the potential for families to go out and use the trail. She hopes in the next 10 years, the county will see this project come to life. Pacific City Skatepark construction breaking ground The Nestucca Valley Community Alliance (NVCA), along with Moment Surf Company and the Cape Kiwanda Longboard Classic

(CKLC), will begin construction of Phase 1 of the Pacific City Skatepark. Groundbreaking on this project is scheduled for Feb. 12.

World renowned Dreamland Skateparks of Lincoln City will be spearheading the project. Plans are for Phase 1 to be completed and ready for skateboards before early summer. This project is the culmination of a decade long dream and fundraising effort to provide more recreational opportunities for the area’s youth. NVCA is incredibly grateful to Moment Surf Company, Pelican Brewing, Dreamland Skateparks and everyone who has supported CKLC and the Pacific City Skatepark. Lisa Macy-Baker has recently taken the position of NVCA board president. “Thankfully, Dreamland was available and willing to begin the skatepark project with the funds we have available now. Although the skatepark is only a part of our masterplan, and we are far from fully funded, we’re so excited to start seeing some visible progress,” MacyBaker said. The community park, located near Cape Kiwanda, currently serves as a fundraising overflow parking lot, and has raised over $20,000 in 2021 from parking donations. NVCA was also recently awarded a Tillamook County Transient Lodging Facilities Grant for $74,000 which will help to provide utilities and infrastructure to the park. The Cape Kiwanda Longboard Classic and Brewfest, usually held in August and organized by Moment Surf Company and Pelican Brewing, serves as the primary fundraiser for the skatepark that will be located at the northeast end of the community park.

Health officials modify vaccine allocations, report decline in cases Zack Demars Country Media

Under the VAC’s plan, people living in multigenerational homes would follow those groups before eligibility opened to the general population. The proposal still needs to be reviewed by OHA officials and forwarded to the governor’s office for final implementation, Allen said. A panel of scientists from Oregon Health and Science University and Oregon State University also discussed the presence of COVID-19 variants in Oregon. Dr. Brian O’Roak, an OHSU researcher leading an effort to sequence the genome of the virus which causes COVID-19, first explained how virus variants come to be. As the virus reproduces, it copies its genetic code to pass on – but sometimes, mistakes in that copying process can change the genetic code. “We know now that it makes on average about one mistake copying that genome every two weeks,” O’Roak said. O’Roak and his colleagues have collected thousands of samples of the virus from across the state to analyze for variants. The analysis can also show researchers how many different forms of the virus came into the state from elsewhere. In the first three

months of the pandemic, the state saw about 20 introductions of the virus from various parts of the world, O’Roak said. A team from OSU has also been tracking the spread of variants in the state by analyzing wastewater from forty different sites, including OSU’s campuses as well as several cities along the coast. They’ve identified the presence of several global variants of the virus, including forms which some studies suggest are more transmissible and less susceptible to antibodies. The possibility they could spread is a reason for caution, said Dr. Brett Tyler, part of the OSU tracking effort. “As these strains continue to enter our communities as our findings indicate, we reinforce the importance of all Oregonians being vigilant about protecting themselves, their families, and those around them by wearing at least one correctly fitting mask when in contact with others, limiting indoor gatherings, maintaining social distancing, washing hands regularly and, above all, getting vaccinated when their time comes,” Tyler said. Still, the conference came on the heels of significant improvements in the state’s key health metrics. “In the past two weeks, we’ve seen dramatic declines in daily cases, as well

as our hospitalizations,” said Dr. Dean Sidelinger, state epidemiologist. “We are returning to daily case numbers last seen in early November, before our winter surge.” The period between Jan. 13 and 26 saw a 45% drop in average daily cases, and Oregon is ranking among the lowest in COVID-19 cases and deaths, Sidelinger said. He attributed the decreases to Oregon residents following pandemic precautions, adding that numbers

could quickly surge again if the state lets its guard down. “Back in early December we were worried, legitimately, that unabated the virus would overtake us, swarming our hospitals and medical facilities with new infected patients,” Sidelinger said. “It’s a tribute to every Oregonian that we were able to avoid that fate, and by continuing to heed the personal protective measures, we have succeeded in tamping down the virus.”

In a press conference Jan. 29, officials from the Oregon Health Authority and state researchers discussed the state’s shifting vaccination plans, the prevalence of COVID-19 variants in the state and a significant slowing of the virus in recent weeks. On vaccines, OHA Director Patrick Allen told reporters the state was planning to change how doses of the COVID-19 vaccine would be distributed the following week. The move came after some counties across the state announced they’d finished with vaccinating individuals in the phase 1A population – health care workers and first responders – and were beginning to vaccinate older individuals. The state’s timeline doesn’t open vaccine eligibility up to seniors until Feb. 8, so Allen said the state needed to reallocate some planned doses to areas with more health care workers and others in the first category of vaccine distribution. “If you’re a county that believes you’ve vaccinated all your eligible populations, we’re not giving you additional doses to vaccinate your ineligible populations,” Allen said. In effect, the announcement means 18 counties

will receive fewer doses Feb. 1 than were originally planned, including Clatsop, Josephine, Lincoln, Marion and Tillamook. On the flip side, 13 counties will receive additional doses of the vaccine the same week to help push through phase 1A, including Columbia, Coos, Douglas, Jackson and the tri-county area around Portland. The change only applies to the Feb. 1 dose allocation in an attempt to keep the level of immunity equitable across the state, Allen said. The state will also begin receiving about 10,000 more doses a week the coming weeks. Teachers and other educational staff have begun receiving vaccinations statewide, and Allen said OHA hopes to have a “critical mass” of them vaccinated by Feb. 14, when individuals over 75 become eligible for the vaccine under the state’s plan. “In general, we’re aiming to reach approximately 70% of each eligible population before moving to the next eligible population,” Allen said. Allen also said the state’s Vaccine Advisory Committee had recommended which groups should be next in line to receive the vaccine: People 16 to 64 with certain medical conditions, “frontline” workers (which has yet to be defined), adults and youth

omeone missed the notice that our beach is closed to motorized vehicles. An older green Geo Tracker, without license plates and possibly stolen, was seen heavily bogged down in the sand on Bayocean Peninsula about 50 yards south of Tillamook’s South Jetty. From reports I received on Jan. 23, it appeared that at least one high tide had washed up around the vehicle. The Tillamook County Sheriff’s Department was notified and able to pull the car out with a tow rope, get it started and drive it off the beach. Thank goodness it didn’t break apart on the beach and spill gasoline! Please, remember

Freedom of speech does not protect lies and incitement

I read the article about Tiffany Jacob in the January 26, 2021, edition. Most of the article concerns her complaints about Facebook and censorship. The article, however, does not address the specifics of why Facebook deleted accounts related to her internet ID. I doubt very much that Facebook was worried about her organizing rallies to support law enforcement. So, what “other political content” did she post? I don’t know because I do not know Ms. Jacob, nor did I see her Facebook or Instagram pages. I do know, however, that freedom of speech does not protect lies, incitement to violence, or insurrection. I believe social media has allowed too much of this “fake speech” and it contributed to the violence at our capital on January 6, 2021. If people choose to express themselves and behave in this fashion, they should be prepared to accept the consequences. Frankly, having your Face-

book account deleted is a minor consequence compared to the destruction of our American democracy. David Audet Tillamook

I sympathize with Jacob’s frustration with Facebook Reading the story of Ms. Tiffany Jacob’s conflict with Facebook (Facebook “banned” her postings), I can sympathize with her frustration. I have had my own issues with Facebook, but they are related to FB’s industrial level drilling operation in Tierra Del Mar. Nevertheless, Ms. Jacob may have failed her Civics lesson. The First Amendment applies to government censorship of “free speech.” Obviously, Facebook is not the government and, presumably, has the option to enforce protocols it so chooses on a platform which it owns (and which Ms. Jacob was using for no cost). One would think Ms. Jacob, being a MAGA enthusiast and all, would have a better under-

Irresponsible journalism Your choice of running a front-page, above-the-fold article on “Big tech censorship...” in the January 26 issue of the Headlight Herald defies every tenet of responsible and objective journalism. As an experienced editor and journalist, I am shocked and appalled at this debasing of our community newspaper. Giving credence to someone who is obviously a QAnon advocate (her sweatshirt proudly depicts a flag and an eagle emblazoned with the acronym for a QAnon slogan) without substantiating what messages provoked Facebook’s blockage of her pages is without news merit and should not have been published at all, let alone given the prominence you gave it. Jacob is right in stating that “Freedom of speech is a cherished idea.” However, don’t be deceived, this is not a First Amendment issue. Facebook is a private

While our Chamber travel trip was planned for May of this year, sadly COVID-19 has halted global travel for now. What that means for folks who have already signed up is that we will be waiting until May of 2022 to travel to Italy and Greece, after vaccines are widely distributed. his week, I am going to tell a little story about something silly I did, and hopefully I can use it to make a point about libraries. It was a beautiful, sunny April day on the Oregon Coast and my wife and I decided to take a walk on the beach at Barview. Ever since we moved here nine years ago, we have loved taking beach walks every chance we get, and we have adopted the hobby of searching for agates while we walk. As you might know, some days there are no

agates to be found, and other days they are easy to find. We have a running joke that we cannot leave the beach until we find at least one agate. As a result, we have many jars filled with agates on display in our house. So, on this particular sunny April day during our threemile beach walk, we both had our eyes trained hard on the sand, scanning left and right, left and right, left and right… trying to find the perfect agate. As we started to climb off the beach to get into our car, we noticed several excited people all looking out to the ocean. One boisterous gentleman made eye contact with

us and he said, “Did you see all the whales? There was a dozen or more whales right off the end of the jetty and they were really putting on a show! But they are all gone now.” No! I missed seeing some

of the most amazing creatures on this earth! Instead of gaining an incredible memory of seeing whale tails and spouts of spray, I just had three little agates in my sweaty hand! All we would have had to do is to look up and we could have seen a dozen whales cavorting around the jetty, but we were so focused on scanning the sand for agates that we missed the whole show. We were too focused on the other task at hand…agates. That is also how I sometimes see our libraries in Tillamook County. People often drive right by our fine facilities, their eyes focused on another task at hand…another

place to be. All they would have had to do is look up and see all the wonders the library has to offer. We have six locations around the county so rest assured, a library is never very far away from where you are in Tillamook County. Even though you cannot enter our buildings right now because of COVID restrictions, there are still plenty of ways to utilize our libraries. We have established a foolproof, contactless method of picking up all the books and videos you desire at the front door of any of our libraries. You can either place books on hold yourself, or simply ask us for help. When your

requested items are ready, we will let you know it is time to stop by to pick them up. And of course, there are now more electronic items available than ever, so you do not even need to stop at the library. From the comfort of your home, you can check out e-books, e-magazines, downloadable audiobooks, movies, TV shows, popular music… and so much more. Next time you are driving around Tillamook County, don’t forget to look up and notice the library. We promise we can provide a whale of a good time if you take a moment to stop by.

done all over our country. It is no wonder that Americans are more divided than ever. Unfortunately, there is a communication breakdown on a topic of importance in our community: forestry. I often hear dehumanizing language being used about foresters. I would like to humanize these mysterious people that work in the woods in order to help fix the communication breakdown so that perhaps we can begin to have valuable and balanced conversations about forestry that include all parties, including families like mine that depend on it. My husband, Jake, and I are raising our family on the Tillamook coast. He is the reforestation manager for Stimson Lumber, and I am a special education teacher in Tillamook county. We welcomed our little girl, Ruth, into the world almost a year ago. She is the light of our life, and we plan to have more children in the future. Thankfully, I have been able to work part time during our baby’s first year. This would not have been possible for us financially if it were not for Jake’s steady, family wage income. We are so grateful to be one of the more than 60,000 family wage jobs provided by the timber industry. If it weren’t for these jobs, there is no way we or our friends could raise our families in Tillamook. We love where we live and care deeply for the environment. We hike, hunt, fish, and collect mushrooms and berries from our forests.

Those of us who work and play in the woods see the outcomes of proper forest management with our own eyes: we dip our hands in cold clean forest streams, we see wildlife browsing in openings created through harvest, and we hear the birds when we hike. Our forests produce some of the best water quality in all of Oregon; we know because we drink it every day. Since we are raising our family here, we have a vested interest in preserving the environment. We want our children to be able to drink the water and play with us out in the woods. Why on earth would we want to destroy that future for them? They say a picture is worth a thousand words. We have taken a picture every year in the same spot in one of Jake’s first reforestation sites to document our care and passion for forestry, the beautiful life cycle of our forests and the growth of our family. It starts in 2015 when we planted the seedlings and continues through our engagement in 2016, wedding in 2018, pregnancy in 2019 and finally when we welcomed our little girl Ruth into the world in 2020. We plan to continue this photo series yearly until the trees are ready to be harvested, in about 2055 when we plan to retire. It will be something we look back on with pride. We are not an anomaly in the forestry industry. We are close with other families of forestry professionals in Tillamook who are

dedicated, passionate and responsible about their work in the woods. They are as connected to the environment and the community as we are, and this guides every decision they make on the job. It’s families like ours that make up the forestry industry. It truly hurts my heart when I hear the negative conversations being had

around forestry. One sided conversations that do not take into consideration families like ours only create a further divide between the people that work in the woods and everyone else. Let’s begin to bridge that divide by seeing foresters for what they are; human beings with families that responsibly manage the forest with pride and care.

Resilience: Resilience is a word that describes an individual’s capability to recover from difficult situations such as a pandemic, loss, conflict, disaster, or illness. You can think of resilience like a rubber band being stretched. When the rubber band is released, it returns to its original state. In this column I am using the rubber band as an analogy of a person experiencing a difficult time. Once the difficult time passes, the person can resume to a life that is familiar. There are many ways you can build your resilience, such as: being positive, volunteering, practicing mindfulness, learning new skills, and building meaningful connections with others. OBITUARIES Peggy Ann Jones Aug. 30, 1954 - Jan. 17, 2021

eggy Ann Jones was born on August 30, 1954 to Katherine & Rex Wheeler. She had two older brothers, Duane and Jimmy, and a little sister, Nancy. Peggy joined the Army August 6, 1973 and completed it with a degree in Occupational Therapy. She then moved to Cloverdale, Oregon, where she met

and married Terry Jones. She lived in Bay City for a couple of years, while they started their family, and finally moved to Pleasant Valley. Peggy was a lifelong and active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and even volunteered for a few years at the Kitten Kaboodle thrift store in Tillamook. On January 17, 2021, after a decades long fight with Polycystic Kidney Disease, Peggy was called back to heaven. She is survived by her husband Terry Jones, children Katherine Jones and Jesse Jones, and grandchildren Seth Jones and Kendall Jones. Funeral service will be Feb. 6, 2021 at 11 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Tillamook (4200 12th St.).

highlight for me last week was an invitation, on short notice, to have a first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine. I arranged and kept a vaccine appointment for Saturday afternoon at a local doctor’s office. Some days have passed, and there were only two mild side effects. I had a noticeable adrenaline rush at the time of the shot (similar to my body’s response to Novocain at the dentist) and there was some soreness in the effected arm that evening. Gordon McCraw, Tillamook’s Emergency Preparedness guru, recently published good information about the vaccine in Oregon. Info included word that “[Leaders at the State level] gave us guidance on which groups are eligible for the vaccine first...that educators will become eligible on [a specific date] with other dates for the 65+ age groups. The limiter [has been] the number of doses each county gets each week.” He reports that planning has been “a nightmare for the County.” They learn “on Friday, whether to expect a shipment on Monday, and how much will be in the box... Tillamook County, to date, has received a little over 1,200 doses. Some of those are second doses and have to be held for that purpose. Greetings Bay City! Do you know what I have missed during the pandemic shutdowns? ... the library. Not that I didn’t order Ebooks and read them on my smartphone. But I missed going inside on rainy days and spending all the time I needed or wanted selecting my weekly reads. This week I had a fun phone interview with our Bay City librarian, Angel Cavanaugh. I found out that she was raised in Tillamook and graduated from Western Oregon University in Monmouth, my home town! Angel has been our branch librarian for approximately one and a half years. She shared that she loves her job, and its been the best experience. She feels that, when you serve in the smaller community branches, you get to know your patrons personally and become part of their lives and the community at large. She would like our community to know that, because of Covid, we can’t come in, but they are there. It just looks a little different this year. Besides offering curbside pickup, they offer U-Tube songs, crafts, stories, and videos. The Teen Winter Reading Program is happening right now through March 12th. The children’s monthly craft projects have also become very popular. Materials for craft projects can be picked up at curbside. This year’s seed program will also look different. For your free veggie and flower seed packets, you will find them outside of Mana’s Kitchen. Help yourself, but if you need more, or have questions, contact the Bay City Library. n Tuesday, January 19th, 2021, Bradley James Rogers, passed away in Portland Oregon surrounded by his family. Brad passed due to a bacterial infection. Brad was born in Astoria Oregon to Larry and Mardell Rogers on February 14, 1969. As a young man, he was an active member of the Tillamook 4-H and FFA. He showed beef, sheep and swine, as well as competed in tractor driving, soils and livestock judging. He received his FFA State Farmer degree in 1987. Brad played 4 years of high school football for the Cheesemakers and was recruited by Oregon Institute of Technology (OIT) as a generally occurs at very cold temperatures, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) says that it can happen even at cool temperatures (above 40°F) if a person becomes chilled from rain, sweat, or submersion in cold water. Our rivers and the ocean are very cold well into summer months. In adults, watch for confusion, fumbling hands, uncontrollable shivering, memory loss, disorientation, exhaustion, drowsiness and/or a body temperature below 95 degrees. In infants watch for bright red, cold skin and very low energy. If you suspect hypothermia, get medical attention immediately and begin warming the person until help arrives. Wet clothing must be removed and the person should be clothed in dry clothing or wrapped in blankets or blankets heated in the dryer. Several additional ways to warm a person are suggested on the CDC’s Hypothermia page. ita Ann Hamilton was born October 1, 1957 in Salt Lake City, UT., to LeRoy and Norma McMullan and passed away January 21, 2021 in Tillamook, OR. at the age of 63. Rita attended Gem State Academy where she met her husband. They married in 1976 and moved to La Grande, OR. Later moving to Modesto, CA., Sandy, OR. and finally settling in Tillamook in 1983. Rita was a music teacher at the Tillamook Seventh Day Adventist School. She also worked in bill-

ing for Dr. Mohr as well. Rita was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2000. Rita and her husband went on a last trip. They went on so many last trips over the next 20 years that she became a travel agent. Rita was a talented musician, and music teacher. She loved to travel and enjoyed being a seamstress. Rita was also a member of the Oceanside Chapel. Rita is survived by her husband Larry Hamilton, her son Daryl Hamilton and his wife Cassy, her daughter Kellie Kraft and her husband Alex, her daughter Melinda Hamilton, her grandsons Tyson and Cole Kraft, her niece Katlyn Hergert, 2 nephews Kevin and Alex Hergert and her brother in law Richard Hergert. A memorial service will be held Friday, January 29th at 6:00 PM at the Tillamook Seventh Day Adventist Church.

anice Diane (McCallum) Rieger was born in Providence, RI on April 8, 1947 and passed away on January 27, 2021 in Tillamook, OR. She spent her younger years the daughter of a Navy family and lived many places including Corpus Christi, TX and

Key West, FL. While her father was stationed in Tillamook, she met the love of her life, Ed Rieger. They were married September 18, 1965 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Tillamook. Janice worked 20 years in the packaging department at TCCA. After retirement she enjoyed many road trips with Ed and the cruise of a lifetime which included Istanbul, Italy & Pompei. She enjoyed shopping, weekend scenic drives, and camping with the family at Suttle Lake every summer. Her greatest joys in life were being a wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She was proceeded in death by her parents Kendall

and Dorothy McCallum and her sister Luella. Janice is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, Ed, and her sister Cindy of Richland, WA. Four children and their spouses, Wendy (Jeff), Joe (Susan), Sandy (Mike), Coby (Natalie). Fifteen grandchildren: Ashley, Amanda, Emily, Audrey, Madeline, Meridith, Gwendolyn, Henry, George, Matthew, Nicholas, Brianna, Chloe, Carsen and Callan and thirteen great-grandchildren. Many people who have recovered from SARS have gone on to develop chronic fatigue syndrome, a complex disorder characterized by extreme fatigue that worsens with physical or mental activity, but doesn’t improve with rest. The same may be true for people who have had COVID-19. This disease is so much worse than the flu. Please wear a mask and look to science for the answers, not

Trump doth protest too much Dear Editor, (from a Tillamook cheese-head from way back) One of the things astute observers of the 45th president have not failed to notice is his self-promotion. In the questionable ethics of the twenty-first century, this is taken to be a good thing. It is thought to be necessary in order to beat out the competition. But we seem to have lost sight of the fact that throughout history self-promotion has not been thought of as a good thing, not even for business people and politicians. Donald Trump says he is the most popular president in history, and that he has been the best friend to black people since Abraham Lincoln. Everything he does is great, and everything the other guy does is terrible. In the vernacular language of 20th century America, this is called tooting your own horn. Nearly 500 years ago, Shakespeare gave us the rendition of this tune for his day, “The lady doth protest too much.” Long before that, the carpenter from Nazareth remarked, “If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.” “I’m innocent” doesn’t play well in court against all the evidence to the contrary. That is why the court requires witnesses to speak up. A truly good business leader or politician allows his or her reputation to be established out of someone else’s mouth. Herd immunity by infection is not an option There are two concerning articles in the 15 January, 2021 issue of Science regarding herd immunity for the Sars-CoV-2 virus: “Herd immunity by infection is not an option,” on page 230, and “Three-quarters attack rate of SARS-CoV-2 in the Brazilian Amazon during a largely unmitigated epidemic,” by Buss et al on page 288. Indication are the herd immunity threshold is over 90%, with the implication that achieving this level by infection (rather than by vaccination) would result in over 1.5 million deaths in the U.S. These should be read by every concerned about combatting the virus. February is Teen Dating Violence Awarness Month: ‘Know your worth’ Laura Swanson TCW Advisory Committee Member “Dating violence is preventable, especially if education about healthy relationships starts early,” said Valerie Bundy, executive director of Tides of Change. “This month and beyond, we want educators, youth, and community leaders to join along with middle, high school and college students, to raise awareness of the differences between healthy, unhealthy, and abusive relationships.” The good news? Talking about healthy relationships and dating abuse can help break the cycle of violence and stop abuse before it begins. Each February, Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month highlights these issues by providing resources such as this “Healthy Relationship” quiz, https://www. loveisrespect.org/wp-content/ uploads/2017/07/HR-Quizfinal.pdf and tips below for recognizing “warning signs” – opportunities for prevention of abusive relationships. COVID-19 has changed dating and relationships, and in some cases endangering people that are dependent on an abuser, quarantine restrictions provide control and
